Klasse Oldschool Hirntot Ballerei

“Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.”
~Douglas Adams

In 2001, a small Croatian team called Croteam released Serious Sam. It wasn't much of a game. We were supposed to simply run forward and shoot things. No proper level design, no proper story, no complicated mechanics, nothing. It was just that – a basic “run and gun” fun. Nobody even tried to provide us with something bigger. In a way, Serious Sam was just a way to show off so-called Serious Engine. Croteam's engine, which was supposed to do the same thing id Software and Epic Games did in their Quake II and Unreal. In other words, they've created an engine and wanted the other companies to license it for their own products. The actual game? Like I said, it was just one big engine demo. They ripped off Duke Nukem, put him into Powerslave (AKA Exhumed, AKA Seireki 1999: Pharaoh no Fukkatsu) setting, added some basic shooting and called it a day.

Surprisingly, while Serious Engine didn't sell well (despite being a pretty nice engine, it failed to get any attention and only “value” companies like Sunstorm Interactive licensed it for their games like Bird Hunter and Deer Hunter), the game became a surprise hit. People loved a simple approach and as the result, Serious Sam ended up being installed on pretty much every computer in LAN gaming centers. Serious Sam was simple, fun, it had quite a lot of satisfying guns and, of course, multiplayer only made things more juicy. And while nobody waited for the original Serious Sam back in 2001, quite a lot of people waited for a sequel. Even though technically, we already had one in 2002, so-called Second Encounter was pretty much more of the same. Sure, Croteam tried to promote their engine even harder there by adding tons of crazy physics (which actually made the game worse), it was still... Well, like I said, it was more of the same. Now, here? Here's the real deal. A proper new game on proper new engine.

Let's start with the engine. Naturally, it comes with better visuals (more polygons per model, parallax mapping, new effects, like bloom for example, etc), but when it's about the most important new features, there are two things. First – there's an improved physics, which now allows things like ragdoll procedural animation. A lot of scary terms, huh? Long story short, it's all about those death animations. Remember when at some point enemies in video games started to act like bags of rags while dying? Which was supposed to make things look more realistic, but in reality only added a cheesy aftertaste? Well, Croteam decided that they need that too. Which was a right decision. I mean, cheesy aftertaste aside, ragdoll physics was a future and it was impossible for an engine to be considered as the real deal without it.

Now, the second big thing about Serious Engine 2 was scripts. A scripting language called Macro (Polo!) was supposed to add some order in the ocean of chaos from the original Serious Engine. See, the original Serious Sam was all about triggers. Enemies just spawned in front of you and started to run at you all at the same time. It was triggers, triggers and then even more triggers, because why the heck not? Now, with Marco (Polo! Sorry...) it became possible to organize all that. Which was obviously a good thing. There was another important thing, though. A native support for Microsoft's Xbox console. And it's actually a very important thing to talk about.

See, the original Xbox was a very interesting beast. Not only it was the most powerful console on market, it also aimed to provide its audience with the experience as close to what PC users had as possible. Its name came from “DirectX Box” and it wasn't for nothing. While its direct competitors required developers to create ports, most of which were pretty much stand-alone products, heavily different from the original PC games, Xbox allowed the real deal. For example, while Splinter Cell for PS2 and GameCube was heavily simplified in comparison with the original, Xbox offered its audience the original experience in all of its glory. It even had online-oriented environment, which made things even more impressive. Naturally, Croteam loved the system. Sure, Serious Sam was already presented on PS2 and GameCube in a form of The Next Encounter game (developed by Climax Solent, creators of Sudeki), but it was Xbox that Sam called his console home. So, it was only natural for the new engine to come with the native Xbox support (yes, this game even supports XInput gamepads).

What's funny here is that Xbox actually made an impact on Serious Sam II itself. See, when it's about Xbox, it's hard not think of HALO. BUNGiE's online-oriented FPS that, while not being perfect, revolutionized the entire online gaming on consoles. And with Xbox in mind... well... you've guessed it. Since very beginning, Croteam was all about ripping off popular projects (like I said, it was hard not to notice that Sam himself was just a Duke Nukem rip-off), and this time? This time they've decided to copy / past things from HALO. We've got similar progression, we've got similar pace (which was much slower than what we had in the original Sam), we've got some HALO-inspired weapons and, of course, we've got vehicles. And you know what? I don't think that it was a good idea.

I mean, people who ended up loving the original game, didn't love it for its complicity. Sam was supposed to be as dull as possible and as fast as possible. And even though we still have hordes of enemies (again and again, the game will force you into “survive the wave” thing), the game also became way slower than I can possibly take. Seriously, I can't even have fun here without speed hacks. Like... what the heck? And all the attempts to create proper level design failed pretty hard too. Even more so, since as usual, Croteam wanted to show off their engine. Which means quite a lot of scripted crap. I mean, there's nothing wrong with scripts per se, but you know how it is about too much scripted stuff in first-person shooters. Those things just don't belong together.

Finally, Croteam decided to add more story. Should I say that it was yet another mistake? I mean, come on. The guys never had proper writers and their attempts to be funny are painfully lame. Serious Sam II doesn't just have a bad story. It's a cringeworthy disaster similar to what we had in Postal III. It's that bad. Again and again you'll be like “Good gosh, y'all...” instead of laughing. A person who decided that it'll be a good idea to add tons of long pre-rendered cutscenes with “funny” conversations? That person should be really ashamed. Seriously, shame on you, dude!

So... yeah. That's Serious Sam II for you. I can't... say it's completely unplayable. It's just... you know. It's a crappy HALO rip-off (heck, they even ripped off Cortana... I think, I need a drink) with tons of pathetic humor. Can you have some fun with it? You sure can. Especially if you'll go for multiplayer and / or use speed hacks to make single player mode faster. Should you, though? Well, I don't think so, no. While Croteam proved that they can make pretty solid engines, they also proved that they're terrible, terrible developers. The first Sam was a nice coincidence. But without proper talent (or taste)? The guys ended up making just that. A low budget HALO wannabe with crappy jokes. Sad. But true. Dixi.

Where do you go after The Second Encounter? There’s a clear line between the first two Serious Sam games, with more guns, more monsters, bigger levels, crazier encounters, and sillier secrets. Serious Sam 2 builds on some of that, but ultimately feels like it takes more steps back than it does forward. Croteam had a brand new engine to show off here, and for the time they made a visually striking and completely over-the-top game. It’s just that it wasn’t over-the-top in the way that one would expect a Serious Sam game to be. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still plenty of kleer-smashing and cannonball bowling to be had. I doubt it’s going to be the follow-up to The Second Encounter you’re looking for, though.

Sam Stone has at last escaped the surly bonds of Earth, striking out across the galaxy for Sirius, home of the dastardly Mental. However, his trip is interrupted by a group of all-powerful watchers who have a big job for a Serious hero. Turns out that Mental can only be defeated using a medallion that saps his ill-defined powers, and that medallion has been broken into five pieces and scattered throughout the cosmos. Sam’s new fan club can send him to the planets where the pieces lie, but he’ll need to do all the heavy lifting (and shooting) to get them back. Only then can he begin the assault on Sirius itself, and put an end to this universal threat.

What this means is five distinct chapters of shootouts, spanning jungles, swamps, festivals, wastelands, and fairytale kingdoms. Each leg of your journey is chopped into half a dozen or so short stages, leading to a boss fight with its own unique gimmick. The stages are a lot of familiar Serious Sam fare, giving you a series of chambers or courtyards that fill with enemies, and expecting you to drain them of living opposition before progressing. Some stages feature alternative challenges, like scavenger hunts to find coins or bananas, airship rides between floating islands, or timed sprints through dangerous territory. This variety is hit-or-miss in terms of fun, but I can’t deny it does a decent job of breaking up the gameplay in interesting ways.

The combat is still the main attraction here, and again, it’s familiar fare but mixed in its evolutions from The Second Encounter. For one thing, you’ll simply never have fights of the same scale as the previous game, what with levels being far smaller than any prior. Some of the vistas and structures are still plenty impressive, but the actual architecture leaves plenty to be desired, with an unexpected reliance on invisible walls and hemmed-in arenas. The fights themselves offer a wide variety of new enemies in some creative mixes, including unicycling exploding clowns, mutant football linebackers, and attack helicopters. The over-reliance on some of the more annoying additions (looking at you, attack helicopters) can become grating, but the variety again helps keep things fresh.

Your arsenal has gotten a similarly colorful overhaul, but not without casualties. A chargeable energy pistol joins the starting Colts, homing plasma and beam weapons round out the exotic armaments, and there’s a suicide bomber parrot that can take out tough foes for you. The sniper rifle remains untouched from the last game, but the flamethrower is painfully absent. Everything has gotten bright, creative visual upgrades that really make the guns pop, but the sound design and impact are weaker than ever. Serious Sam games never had the most impactful weapons, but the rocket launcher in this one sounds like you’re just releasing missiles to blow away in the breeze. Most importantly, your arsenal resets on every planet (and sometimes for story beats), and you almost never get the full lineup to play with. This makes certain guns like the plasma cannon and minigun far more useful than others when your options for dealing with hordes are limited.

One of the stranger aspects of Serious Sam 2 is how much closer it feels to other FPSes of the time. The First and Second Encounters always felt like they were thumbing their noses at their contemporaries, eschewing complex encounters and architecture for big boxes or wide-open spaces filled with a million dudes to kill. In comparison, this one features much smaller levels of only a few sections each, and while some of the battles and arenas are quite large, the segmented nature of the levels makes the overall game feel smaller in scope. Odder still is the heavy reliance on vehicle and turret sequences. In more conventional shooters, these were the parts that were meant to feel LIKE a Serious Sam game, a chance to gun down 50 dudes instead of tactically engaging four or five. In a Serious Sam game, a turret sequence is just…more Serious Sam, except you can’t move.

The biggest issue by far, though, is the tone of the game. Serious Sam 2 is the series at its most cartoonish, practically a Saturday morning parody of itself. It’s more than just the bright colors and whimsical designs (which were honestly a welcome respite from the mud-brown shooters of the era), it’s the unpleasant extremes the humor is taken to. The original Sam games had tongue-in-cheek moments, goofy secrets, and even some fourth-wall-breaking in The Second Encounter, but the heart of the struggle against Mental was still played mostly straight. Here, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is a joke. Every single one of the 42 levels opens and closes with a cutscene, and not one of them is lacking for a movie parody, ancient meme, or terrible joke. This is early 2000s monkey cheese humor too, which has aged about as well as actual cheese from the early 2000s would. In particular, the parts of the game around Kingsburg are incredibly cringe-worthy, centering on Sam’s sexual exploits and shaming the outlandishly unattractive princess.

What you’re left with is a game that plays like the Serious Sam you know and love from the original releases, but only in select encounters. The rest of the time, you’re going to be mindlessly mowing down foes with vehicles, groaning at terrible, outdated jokes, or wondering where all the neat secrets went. The guns look better than ever and yet feel worse than before, and you’ll be using them to blow up cartoon characters instead of the slavering beasts you’re accustomed to. This might be the low point of the series, when weighing everything equally, and it’s only saved by the variety it offers compared to the other titles. Yes, it might be a weak Serious Sam, but it’s also a unique Serious Sam, and it maintains enough of the old gibbing magic that I wouldn’t want to write it off completely.

It's Serious Sam as a Saturday morning cartoon.
Movement is much slower than any other Sam game.
Weapons lack any punch and all feel the same.
Pretty environments, but the cartoony looking characters conflict with them really bad.
It's just really boring and slow.
This is seriously the weakest Sam game.

The least good Serious Sam game.

Croteam somehow managed to make the battle arenas extremely tedious, they just keep throwing the same enemy types at you for 5 minutes and you essentially can't move from your starting position. You feel weak, it's not fun, it drags on for way too long. This peaks in the last level, it's so boring and stretched that I can't actually imagine a worse level in the franchise. Not even the music in this level is exciting and I expected it to be just some kind of interlude to the actual ending, but nope.

This being said, SS2 definitely has some charming ideas, lots of humor and several levels that are actually really enjoyable. While the level design and the soundtrack are definitely lacklusters in many parts, it is still a Serious Sam game in its heart and fun to play coop when you finished the other games and want to go for a somewhat different experience.

I don't think I will play it again, but for 8 hours of coop action it's fine. I recommend activating the feature that allows you to dual wield all weapons, it was added in a recent patch. I wanted to go for the original experience and think the dual wielding will give you the feeling of power that was lacking in my playthrough.

If your looking for a review on this game you've come to the wrong place, but if your looking for an outstanding pie recipe you've come to the right place.

Ingredients:
1. 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
2. 1/2 cup white sugar
3. 1/2 cup brown sugar
4. 1/4 cup water
5. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
6. 1 pinch salt
7. 5 apples - peeled, cored and sliced
8. 1 pastry for double-crust pie

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
2. Combine butter, white sugar, brown sugar, water, cinnamon, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, remove from heat and set aside.
3. Roll out half the pastry to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place bottom crust in pie plate; pour in apple slices.
4. Roll out top crust into a 10-inch circle. Cut into 8 (1-inch) wide strips with a sharp paring knife or pastry wheel. Weave the pastry strips, one at a time, into a lattice pattern. Fold the ends of the lattice strips under the edge of the bottom crust and crimp to seal.
5. Pour butter-sugar mixture over top of pie, coating the lattice, and allowing any remaining sauce to drizzle through the crust.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake until the crust is golden brown, the caramel on the top crust is set, and the apple filling is bubbling, 35 to 40 more minutes. Allow to cool completely before slicing.

And oh yeah, this serious sam is my favourite out of the franchise

Like many fans of Serious Sam First and Second encounter on the PC, this extremely over the top cartoon direction didn't sit well with me. I had no interest in it and skipped it completely. I then enjoyed the HD remasters of the original tremendously and then the series was down hill from there. Serious Sam 3 and 4 struggles to find what made the series special.

After all these years I decided to try out SS2 due to the recent patch and I'm shocked how good and fun this game is. It kinda pains to admit that this is, probably, the best game in the series. Although I still prefer Serious Sam to remain more realistic in it's art direction, there is no deny how much fun and variety... to the point of redundancy.. which in this case is a very good thing. How you have unique monsters to fit the theme of a specific level and how some monsters are basically the same, but with minor differences like the Footballer and the Rhino... the Kamikaze and the Clown etc.. Redundant but also slightly different.

I'm quite surprise how much enjoyment I'm getting out of this game. Which makes me wonder how come they hit this high and then the series became so dull with lots of modern tropes wasted on it.

If you loved Serious Sam The First Encounter and Serious Sam The Second Encounter, you will love this game. More of the great humour and action you expect from the series. Croteam really knocks it out of the park.

This game offers less repetition than The Second Encounter in my opinion so big improvement there. The enemies are varied throughout the game which in my opinion keeps each section fresh and fun to play. I liked that they introduced new enemies each section, kept a couple from that section to add to next one and had a good amount of new ones the next.

This game offers a challenge even on easy, yes I played casually on easy. I can only imagine what it's like on the higher difficulties (I'd imagine you'd need friends on normal to insane with the challenge it gave me on easy). I actually had to concentrate and try hard on some sections. The levels vary in length, some I easily beat within 9 minutes, others went closer to 19-20, with the final level taking a whopping 58 minutes to beat. Be prepared to grind.

I did notice that a few of the jokes seemed to be reused in the last section, which it wasn't too too bad though it could have either been altered.

The cinematics were somewhat basic (though what do you expect from a game that came out in 2005) but in a way that made them a lot better. Fantastically written with punchlines and humour that consistently hit. Some of the humour may have aged and be lost on some due to the age of the game itself, but overall it was enjoyable.

Considering the game is 16 years old now, it hasn't aged horribly. I'd highly recommend it if you're a fan of the previous games, arcade-y shooters like doom/duke nukem, or just looking to have a fun time. Great for fans old and new.

I'd probably give this game 9.5/10 overall. only complaint i really have overall is the reused jokes near the end.

Oh no! Another reviewer making Serious jokes!

A seriously Serious installment! NOT!

Okay, so the fights get pretty serious on Serious difficulty. I really am serious about that.

Everything else is not and this game is meant purely for fun and satire. Loved it as much as the other installments though, definitely worth a Serious play-through. Prepare for jokes and humor all the way!

This game is generally easier than the other Serious Sam games.

Easily my favorite Serious Sam game. This game was treated a bit similarly to Wind Waker when it first came out, people did not like the artstyle and it was basically disregarded because of that. But frankly I find the artstyle way more appealing than any other Serious Sam game, especially the newer ones. A friend and I booted up Serious Sam 3 and couldn't make it very far, but we immediately swapped over to this one and we couldn't stop playing. We were laughing and having a great time.

Pretty controversial but I like this one the most, probably due to art style and some of the levels are just super well done. You can get it for like 2€ on a sale and it's packing a lot of replay value.

New modifiers and akimbo mode are a really good reason to replay, although the game's literally impossible on higher spawn rate, it's still a fun thing to try, even with cheats.

Great game, had a ton of fun, was really really enjoyable, I loved the first games, loved the 2nd game/2nd part of the 1st game???? Had a lot of fun with this too.

Then I got to the last levels of the game, and holy, crap, it never, ends. It just, you get to a point where you're just waiting to get to the end, and it just, never happens. NEVER. The first game setup enemies like they were you know, thought out when placed, this one felt like it just threw all 500 at you from the get go infinitely.

Top that all off, final boss on Sirius was glitchy AF for some reason, if I tried to do anything it would lock up the game and I'd have to new desktop task manager close it.

This is a great game, but for the love of god, just play it in multiplayer, it's easy to host and your homies can help. The only thing is that in multiplayer you don't get cutscenes, and I advise turning on the life system in co-op/multiplayer just to make it a bit more fair.

Again, just get it on sale if you really must have it.

yea it cranks up to 11 and drop kicks the knob off buts its easily the most diverse in terms of enemies and locations that mitigates a lot of things ppl found frustrating about TFE that BFE would go back to and then some.

First Impressions:
Pretty buggy, but not within levels. A LOT of the time, starting a new part of a map will force you to restart because it just... doesn't trigger the next part. Pretty stupid.
Fun, and not unfair like First Encounter. The enemies are placed with thought and care, and you feel like anything you do could lead to a hilariously unexpected ambush.
Physics are... meh. Not bad, but underwhelming at the fact that it isn't used more. Then again, I'd argue that a game like this doesn't really NEED physics, but they interact well enough with the player. Grabbing boxes or other objects, however, that just feels pretty bad. Outside of that, they work well enough.

First impressions of Serious Sam 2, 8/10. Not, y'know, a game changer so far, but definitely worth the price.

Serious Sam 2 continue story of a Sam Stone and his quest to defeat Mental. Mechanically it is a classic old school FPS with some vehicle sections, which add a little bit variety. My main problem with this game is its humor.Game tries very hard to be funny, but majority of jokes fall flat. Can recommend it if you like previous games.

Pros:
- Huge amount of diverse enemies;
- Impressive visuals;
- Cool weapon design;
- Decent gunplay;
- Good variety in locations;

Cons:
- Overall wackiness;
- Game take all you guns from you way too often;
- Some fights are too drag out;

Pros:
Wide range of guns that all feel impactful
The recently added dual wielding mechanic breaks the balance, in a good way
Enemy health balancing is better this time around so you dont feel like you're shooting a water gun
Game is long so you get lots of bang for your buck
Enemy numbers aren't too overwhelming (looking at you second encounter)
There are some funny moments
The difficulty builds up gradually in a nice way, instead of having bulls--t difficulty spikes

Cons:
Game is way too long
The latter half runs out of ideas and especially the last few levels feel like a repetition of the stuff you've already done (the last level especially is so boring)
Some of the humor can fall really flat
At some point enemies will be coming at you from literally all angles and it's really hard to keep up
Annoying hitscan enemies (although they arent used much)
There are a few enemies that usually you wont die to but will randomly one shot you for some reason. very annoying when it happens

This update fixes a bunch of stuff and adds a bunch of other cool stuff/mechanics such as dual wielding weapons, rocket jumping, sprinting, etc.

Good old Serious Sam 2 but now with a bunch of new and improved features.

Brilliant.

I bought the game a while back. First I though, WTF is this? Toy bulls with wind up on back, clowns on monocycles, football player orcs? WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF, bad SS game.

So i didn't play. But eventually I made (long) list of games I bought but never played or finished and i pushed myself to follow the listed games and play them.

Well i was wrong. This game was a blast. It is a fun shooter with good gunplay. Kleer's are less annoying and overall enemies were fun to fight against.
Vehicles are fun in this game. Levels and themes are great. And it has co-op which is awesome like all SS games. I also liked the music and sounds.

And the boss fights were great. Lots of love was poured into this wacky game.

This is now one of my favorite SS games.

Serious Sam 2

Serious Sam 2 is a first person shooter developed by Croteam and published by 2K Games in 2005. It is known for being the weirdest game in the franchise due to its vastly different atmosphere and overal tone.

The original Serious Sam is a retro-like first person shooter that depends on hoards of enemies, big guns and a badass protagonist. Serious Sam 2 takes a drastic change from its original 2 encounters. It sticks to the original gameplay, but mainly changes in the visual and story department. the game is made like a cartoon, and cutscenes are now more comedy orienter rather than story oriented. The gameplay is the same as the original: strong guns, tons of enemies and open levels. The music and graphics are, honestly, amazing. The music is very well made and has multiple general like tribal beats, techno beats, hard rock music, etc. Damjan Mravunec made a fantastic job with the music and even sound design, as the guns feel strong and satisfying (besides the revolvers and uzis, that have both weak damage and weak sounds). The graphics are also really nice, I personally like it more than the graphics of the last games. Everything is very colourful, vivid and you can easily see where enemies and items are. What changes up the formula is that most weapons can be used in any situation so swapping between them isnt as necesarry. A great example for this is the minigun. It was made stronger and it doesnt eat through your ammo nearly as fast as before. It can be used against bosses, large amount of enemies or even against bigger bad guys. It simply fits any situation. Another change is the grenade. Sam can now collect and use grenades whenever he wants. These are very convenient and useful and i like how well they work in the game, without making the game too easy or unbalanced. The enemies in the game also got changed up, and there are even completely new enemies. The beheaded soldiers (besides the kamikaze) are now orc soldiers and have different attacks. The bio-mechs are now replaced with a T-mech, which is just a rocket shooting T-rex with a cigar in its mouth. The laser bio mechs are now bull sodiers, either tank-like that shoot lasers, or human-like with rocket launchers (like a mini t-mech, but as a bull) and they both speak Croatian, often trying to intimidate you. The game also includes a few vehicles, which have some sort of weapon on them. Besides that, there are also turrets, but those are more uncommon.

The story of the game is what confused many people and turned them away (which also includes the tone and weird design of the games world). Sam is tasked with finding pieces of a medallion that would help him weaken Mental. Each piece is located on a different world, guarded by a boss. The first world is a tribal themed one, where Sam fights a giant gorilla named Kwongo. The second world is Magnor, which consists of a swamp, a giant tree village and finally a giant themed garden, where you face off against ZumZum, a giant bee. Next is Chi Fang, a china themed world that is ruled by Prince Chan, a big fat cannibal human. Then, we have Kleer Planet. A hell-like world with rocks, lava, and tons of Kleers. There you will fight a skeleton wizard named Kleerofski. Lastly we have Eleniere. It is a fantasy inspired world very similar to Shrek, but it has an Elvis theme. Here u have to save a princess from a dragon named Cecil to convince the King to give you the last medallion piece. But this isnt the end for Sam. He then travels to Kronor, the moon of planet Sirius where he activates a laser and frees some prisoners so they can all enter planet Sirius. After Sam defeates a giant toy robot on Kronor, he enters Sirius, but just before the opening of the shield closes. Once inside, after some exploring, he gets captured and placed in a sadistic game show where he later gets rescued by the resistance members. Sam then travels to Mentals home, defeats his robot building and attempts to kill Mental. His plan fails, because Mental escaped just as Sam arrived. And thats it. The plot acts as if it never existed then, yet opens the possibility for a sequel.

Serious Sam 2 is a big step away from the original Serious Sam games, only linked to them through gameplay and characters. But, even with all these flaws, i believe that the game is still really enjoyable and fun to play. The story and enemies may be wacky, but they are quite interesting in design and offer a wide variety of targets to shoot. The guns are also preety enjoyable to use. Some arent very satisfying, like the revolvers and plasma gun, but the weapons like the double barrel shot gun and minigun are preety fun and devastating. The story is obviously not taking itself seriously, but it is at least some kind of motivation to keep playing. Some cutscenes honestly made me chuckle a bit, like Sam getting stuck in Magnor. The music is also a big highlight, as it offers various generas and are well made. The graphics are the most colourful in the franchise, so its easy to spot enemies and just enjoy in the beauty of the levels. In the end, i recommend playing this game if you are a fan of FPS games and Serious Sam.

The first Serious Sam I played, and still my favourite.
The gameplay is awesome, I think there is only a single map that I don't like (swamp); and as in all SS games the amount of enemies that can appear in the map at the same moment is fucking amazing... and fun to kill with weapons like the cannon.
The cartoonish style was not well received, and I can partially agree in some enemies design; but it is full of fun secrets to find, the longest SS game, and the most important: the one with most variety of enemies and scenarios by far, which is the main reason it is my fav of all.

Great game, fun to play. While the tone is off compared to others in the series, I really like what came out of it. Please tell me what the developers were smoking XD

Recommended with rating maybe 8/10.

There is good and bad in SS2. Some of the levels and enemies feel inspired. However one of my favourite levels, the Giant Junkyard, gets brutal. Then there is the odd boring or annoying level here and there.

The art direction/style is superb throughout though. The first levels from a gameplay standpoint are OK but take a bit of adjustment. Then after that I found the swamp levels excellent. Mostly from there on it rocked. Then coming towards the end I found most of the last set of levels just a boring grind. It took quite a few plays to get through it, and few shut-downs from irritation.

Overall though, the majority of SS2 felt inspired. Shame for Croteam that it was not received that way. Although it is now as it has an 85% positive rating on Steam.

A highly entertaining game, even in 2020. My friends and I started playing Serious Sam 2 quite a lot and never got to finishing it so we always started over. But when we actually decided that we should finish it once and for all, we had a lot of goofs and gaffs during our playthrough. Most importantly, I really recommend playing it in co-op. We were laughing at the ridiculous low budget cutscenes and just generally the entire game including Sam, the characters, bosses and the levels. There were definitely times when it looked like enemies were going to spawn in forever but surprisingly we could make even those lame moments quite amusing.

I don't know what Croteam were smoking while making Serious Sam 2, but this game is completely batsh!t crazy. And I love it!
This is the black sheep of the franchise. But black this game is not. The graphics is much more colorful and cartoony; it's like an acid trip. Sometimes it can be a little disorienting, when you don't see the enemies clearly because all the visual diarrhea going on in the screen.
There is a story, which doesn't take itself seriously at all (ironic, huh?) with lot of wacky cutscenes. But the fundemantals are the same - you shoot hordes of enemies while awesome music is playing. The shooting is smooth, responsive, and satisfying. You can now hop into turrets and vehicles to blast your enemies into pieces, and all of them are great fun to use. You can even ride a freaking dinosaur, which spits out fireballs. How cool is that?
There is a point system, which I don't care for, but every 10 000 points you get an exta life, so if you die, it's not the end of the world, and prevents you from savescumming through the entire game. Also, no sprinting, no iron sights, no weapon reloading and no melee executions. Just pure, old-school shoot-em-up action with plenty of ammo for your guns. See BFE, THIS is how you do a proper Serious Sam game.
This game is wierd, but very underrated in my opinion - it's definitely one of the best Serious Sam games, so I recommend checking it out.

This game is the best Serious Sam game ever made; it has lengthy and very diverse campaigning, with separate sections looking and feeling quite different than previous; campaigning has multiplayer; number of enemies, their design and animation, and there are lots of interesting vehicles for larger levels (and some levels are really big). The cartoonish graphic, while not well received on release is holding up very well and it became pretty much the industry standard in recent years, so Croteam was far ahead of its time. This is a fun, quick paced game that is cheep now, and dirt cheep on sales. No reason not to try it.

Serious Sam 2 is not like the other games in the series. I can see why people are so split on it.

I personally found the first three worlds to be very hard to enjoy. I chalk this up to the crudity of the art style, humor, and animations compared to the previous games. But the later part of the game starts giving you the fun weapons and better arenas to use them in.

This game wasn't for me and I think I could have skipped this one and been perfectly happy. But if you don't mind the humor and art style, Serious Sam 2 might be worth checking out.

Serious Sam 2 is indeed my very first experience in This Franchise back when i was just a child.
This game is not as good as any other Serious Sam Games , but i don't understand why it is so underrated and not appreciated. I mean Sam 2 is a long game with lots and i mean LOTS of levels , that's why I think many people find it boring , but let me tell you something about Serious Sam 2 :
1. Sam 2 has a good graphics , a little bit cartoonish and the community somehow dislikes it , but for me is a good one , considering that the game was developed back in 2005 , which it was a good upgrade of the Serious Engine after the Xbox version of the First game and the Next Encounter from 2004.
2. The cutscenes from the Serious Sam 2 has a lot of Fun and I personally enjoy the Comedy of Sam's voice (John J. Dick) and Croteam had a big budget to create a better view of the game and they struggled to make something refreshing.
3. The Music is pretty good and I love every last one of them , that's why I respect Damjan Mravunac for making cool rock songs.
For these very reasons i recommend to play the game and even try to enjoy the game and watch the cutscenes , maybe that will change your opinion and the view of the game.
As one of the Best Serious Sam Best Campaign Players this will help you the see the other aspects of Serious Sam 2 ,

This is the most hit-or-miss game I have ever played, hands down. Simultaneously it has a level that I would absolutely hold up as a shining example of bad level design, things you should never EVER do, and has some very fun and creative levels in it. It has sections that are just a painful slog, and sections that are well designed creative fun. It has some wonderful enemy design, and some garbage that shouldn't exist. This game sits firmly on both extremes at the same time, with some overall fun gameplay and some atrocious unfunny, unfinished cut scenes between every level. It's honestly amazing how one game can be both really good and really bad as often as this one does. Ultimately, I am glad I played it, because when it was fun it was a lot of fun. But wow, it's extremely inconsistent. If you did like the first Serious Sam games, this one will provide. You just have to wade through some deep piles of crap to get to it all.

”Different Sam, Same Old Serious”

Serious Sam 2 (SS2) is the most controversial title of Croteam’s games in term of design direction and some console element. I could understand reason why someone dislikes its direction and pretend it never happens. However, it still delivers solid old school FPS and interesting element which I keep revisiting sometimes since the first release in 2005.

I used to play retailed version many times. My latest playthrough was completed on Steam version (Serious difficult).

Ultimate Adventure to Ring Mental’s Doorbell

The story takes place after SS: The Second Encounter. Sam “Serious” Stone is summoned and tasked by Sirian Great Council to search for five pieces of medallion. It is a key to make Mental, Sam’s ultimate nemesis, to be vulnerable. So, Sam can finally finish his mission and save humanity once again.

SS2 visual design and theme is brighter, shiny, and much more colorful compared to the rest of franchise. It also has a lot of notable changes such as weapon design and function, various new enemies that share similar behavior or behave like sub version of certain enemies from The First / Second Encounter. Those changes were made to fit the cartoonish and goofy theme that may not appeal to everyone, especially fans that get used to original tone / design from previous titles.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that SS2 has the most diverse and spectacular environments. Collecting five pieces of medallion is just an excuse to introduce different planets with beautiful landscape and living NPCs (can sometimes do combat assistant and provide support items). From eastern style palace in Chi-Fang planet to fairy tale floating island and medieval castles in Ellenier planet, Sam journey will finally end at Sirius, the place full of futuristic skyscrapers and advanced technologies (which explained why Mental force are powerful).

I personally think the lore and settings in SS2 are much more intriguing and have potential. I also have no problem about cliché' storytelling (go there and collect those things). Unfortunately, it suffers from weak writing by forcing humor and many silly acting to the point that becomes cringe for audience. Writing is never a strong point of this franchise in the first place, but I expect SS2 to have some improvement.

NETRICSA (or Sam’s personal computer) also comes back with better appearance and can chit-chat with Sam. NETRICSA may have interesting character and personality. I found her provide less lore / intel compared to what she had in previous titles (detailed bestiary, weapon info, location). It also cause some enemies look out of place because of lacking explanation to support their existence.

Shoot and Dodge Until It’s Done

Serious Sam is simply about moving and shooting like standard FPS. Each new entry is more of the same. You fight the horde of Mental, bigger horde, and large scale bosses at the end of each main chapter. The key is to utilize your movement, effective weapon, range, environment, and prioritize enemies in order to survive each fight. It becomes more challenged on higher difficulty where most attacks are deadly as the game constantly throws mixed up enemies in your screen. Each main bosses fight relies on its gimmick, but the visual and telegraph are clear enough to guide player

The weapon design has been modernized with some replacement. I adore their silly design and animation of new toys (eight-barreled semi-automatic shotgun, kamikaze parrot, plasma rifle, dual Uzis). Hand grenade is welcome addition and powerful enough to get player out of sticky situation. Despite of some weak sound, they still deliver decent punchy feedback and fun to hold trigger. Not many games allow you to gun down Centaur, American Football, Spider Mech, and Attack Helicopter while listening to awesome soundtrack at the same time. It’s such an enjoyable and unique experience for old school genre.

SS2 also features many turret and vehicle section from Hover Bike to flying sawblade UFO. They feel weighty, but easy to control and help fight against fast enemies (because SS2 has ton of flying enemies). I don’t think vehicle section is bit too long, but I wish for longer playtime of some vehicles (combat dino, rollerball).

SS2 has score system and power pickup pretty much like previous titles, but add score item as reward when player destroy props or discover secrets. For every 10k score, player grants one extra life. Extra life system provides benefit for console version, but it’s pointless for PC that already implements quick-save function. I only found extra life useful to reset when it got messed up right after quick save.

Stumble into Mental’s Trick

As much as I love the variety of SS2, there are some flawed designs that are hard to ignore. Hitscan enemies can be sometimes frustrating to deal when they mix up with melee enemies (ex: Zombie Stockbroker w/ Horde of Kleer), not to mention most smaller scale / tight corridor levels. Physics in Serious Engine 2 that only functions on props and environment (imagine how well if every enemy has ragdoll feedback). The problem is its janky and floaty feeling. It’s noticeable and out of control when you need to access some secret areas or mid-air interaction (I’m looking at you, railing bird ship section). I also dislike red mist of blood splatter in vanilla version.

In addition, SS2 has co-op feature (both online and LAN). Online co-op server supports up to signature 16 players for maximum mayhem. It’s bit buggy, but still functional.

Melody of Mayhem

SS2 is full of unique sound effects to identify individual enemy. Weird animal roar, baby scream, squishy sound, mumble in Japanese language, AHHHHHHHHHH! and more. Each world setting has its own ambient soundtrack that fits mood very well such as tribal theme, traditional song, metal, and beat-up electronics. Some fighting tracks kick in and give a feeling of brave lone hero or some sort of motivation.

Still, Are You Serious?

I think SS2 doesn’t deserve the hate. It has both improved element from previous titles and some bad elements, but the change doesn’t deviate from Serious Sam core gameplay. It’s worth playing just for chaotic fight on screen and I wish to see this level of variety for future Serious Sam and other old school. Lastly, I also recommend playing with “Renovation Mod” that you can find on Steam guide / Moddb (in case you want improved blood effect, redesigned weapon mesh, and some animation change).

It’s time to get serious once more!

this is my first review for every steam game i have ever purchase and play. story 10/10 breaking the 4th wall, making bad jokes. the game is soo goofy, vibrant world, pretty hard game and funny. 10/10 when i finished this game 11 years ago alone. now i rate it 20/20 after finishing it with my friends. absolute blast from the past. PS this is one of the example where game dev really pour their shit on games, which is kinda rare nowadays where every game company forgot to put the final ingredient which is fun.

A lot of people hate on this game and while it isn't a perfect game by any means and it was visibly rushed and largely designed for consoles, I think Serious Sam 2 is absolutely one of the best games in the series (probably #2, after Second Encounter)

The levels present enormous variety, are massive and truly epic in scale and combat, the enemies also have huge variety (you will rarely see the same enemy in multiple chapters) and you even get to mess around with vehicles, which are actually really cool and it's a shame Croteam ditched them after this game.

So it's great to have the game back on Steam and in a pretty good state. I highly recommend this if you enjoy FPS games - it's a must-play.

The game itself is extremely fun 9/10. The problem me and many other people have is that the steam version is broken. I have been forced to restart the game 4 times because you will constantly get an hour or so into the game and then it will say your save data is corrupt. This isnt an issue with my pc as I have never had this problem with any other game. After playing through the first 2 hours of the game multiple times I'm just done. What a shame as the game is really fun. If you want to beat this game you have to do it in one sitting. Do not expect the game to save your data and come back to it later.

Quite an underrated blast from past. Yeah, it is much more colorful and cartoonish comparing The First Encounter and The Second Encounter but in a good way. After playing those 2 games countless hours, it is refreshing to play something slightly different.

There exists an old unofficial Linux port which works fine if you're into Single Player and/or LAN multiplayer (vs/coop);

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/7a2o1d/guide_serious_sam_2_native_installation/

For Online multiplayer, Steam version is the way to go. To make the game more compatible with Proton/WINE on Linux, use OpenGL renderer and OpenAL sound API.

OpenGL:

Edit ContentSeriousSam2Sam2.ini.
Locate the line gfx_iAPI = 2;.
Replace with gfx_iAPI = 1;.

OpenAL:

Edit ContentSeriousSam2Sam2.ini.
Locate the line sfx_iAPI = 2;.

This game is very fun to play and its long as well. It's worth the price but if there is one thing i dislike about it is how hard and stupid some sections are, personally for me the swamp is the stupidest and hardest section in the game. But still most chapters are great, there are just some levels here and there that are hard to beat. You should buy this game. 7.5/10

People might not enjoy this more cartoon take on Serious Sam - but especially in the later level it's definitely the classic Serious experience everyone's come to love.

Personally not fond of some of the variations but it absolutely is a Serious Sam game at its core. Still worth a replay in 2019.

Some say this is not much like the original Serious Sam and they are somewhat correct, there are massive battles with outrageous numbers or creatures, some very cool and unique guns, some old some new.

A few other have said the starter energy weapon is too overpowered and that was a game breaker, well if that is true for you I would suggest to not use it as the rest of the game is a hoot !

Much more story and plot line, a few very minor but enjoyable puzzles that are there just not obvious as to even being there but when discovered you may find them quite creative.

If you like the Sam series of games then this should be in the collection, provided you like corny jokes and dialog in the cut scenes which I do very much.

Bought on sale but even at full price it is still a bargain for the entertainment value.
