Negativ: Grafik.

The Expeditions series started off relatively small but the game shows the potential of the series. The combat is almost there, the writing is decent and has some surprises. The colonization element is handled well and there are plenty of choices to make. The random encounters are badly balanced but the camp mechanics is very fun, especially once you upgrade some followers. Remember to make as many cannonballs as possible. Also try to find all the map markers.

very good and relaxing game.

i prefer this one other expeditions:viking.
in viking you have too much micro-managment with you companions like who do i need to lvl up for a cook etc., long loadtimes and resources-picking is annoying. not here. this one shows hows done right. its fun to explore the map and pick up the resources, fights are tactical and fun. and the music and atmosphere are very satisfying.

its a game where you can dive deep in, relax and forget the time.

Very fun little gem. Colonialism isn't a popular topic for games in the modern age, but this game does a good job of making an RPG out of it. Assemble an expedition by choosing characters with different jobs and personality types to take to the new world. As an RPG it allows you a decent amount of freedom in solving quests either by being a true merciless colonizer or an open-minded diplomat. Your expedition members will react to your choices according to their own little personalities. Ultimately the game revolves around tactical battles which are simple but intuitive. It is easy to grasp the game's mechanics relatively quickly and figure out how to build out and level up your expedition in an effective (if not optimal) fashion without any need to restart or look up guides. Writing is good, but minimal. It's not like X-Com where you can face hundreds of hours of random or semi-random battle content. All the battles seem to be hand crafted to fit into the narrative, so the game will play more like an RPG where you play your way through and commit to a replay if you want to try different decisions or party setups. Good value for anyone who likes tactics games, indie RPGs, or is just a fan of Spanish colonialism.

A bit dated at this point but still worth it on a sale or if you like this period of history. Hopefully they will do a updated version in the future. Would also love to see a Expeditions Africa set in the late 19th, early 20th century.

I had owned this game for a while but rage-quit the first time I played it because I realized early on that I hadn't optimized my character and early-game decisions for the type of game I wanted to play. I didn't come back to this game again until after I played the developer's next entry in this series, Expeiditions: Viking. Because of the significant overlap in the basic game design between the two games, I was able to appreciate this game a lot more the second time around.

If you've never played one of these games before, there may be a bit of a learning curve before you get the hang of how to assign tasks to your crew members most efficiently, and which dialogue options you should should choose to affect the morale of various members of your crew, based on the personality traits of each respective member. If you choose a crew with mostly consonant traits, and play mostly according to what fits the personalities of your crew, it is easy to maximize the morale of almost all of your crew members.

The game is surprisingly well balanced and optimized. The combat is quite fun and addictive. I hope the developer keeps making historical games like this, it's a solid game design concept with plenty of room for further entries into the series.

I want to like the game. From what I've played I enjoyed the combat, setting, and random event stories. But I have severe frame drops in combat on every characters move, even on the absolute lowest settings and forcing V-Sync through my graphics card/setting my resolution to 60hz. This results in very laggy fights which are atrocious to wade through. I've tried many different solutions and looked up different fixes but I simply cannot find a fix that actually works. This seems like one of those games where if your computer isn't particularly old then you're going to have problems. This is a shame since I really enjoyed this game's sequel (which I recommend) and I wanted to play through both games before Expeditions: Rome comes out next year, but sadly I cannot stomach the horrendous frame drops during the combat, and I don't see this old title getting any stability updates in the near-future or ever really. Maybe I will figure out the problem and fix the frame issues someday, and I will play through it and update this review accordingly. But until then, may this story serve as a warning.

I will allow comments on this review in hopes that a dev responds to this review with potential fixes in mind for the terrible in-combat frame drops. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.

It has been awhile since I played Conquistador, but thought I'd leave a review with Rome coming next month because I just love the whole series.

The combat is solid, I have some objections to the relative effectiveness of bows compared to arquebuses, but as a whole the combat is tactically interesting and rewards good planning. The writing is excellent and it brings to life a period of history that is seldom written about. The companions are good with well handled backstories that react to your actions and to those of the other companions.

As a gamer with a history degree myself I find the Expeditions series hits that sweet spot of historically flavored gaming impeccably.

I really, really wanted to like this game. The atmosphere, the tactics, the concept, all of it has so much to like in my opinion. However, I cannot get myself to enjoy the party personality part of the game. I know some love it. But I have never been one of those that is into supervising a bunch of kindergarten kids or dealing with high school drama. And that is exactly what the party personality part of the game feels like. It seems to me that no one on the developer team has ever experienced the dynamics of a warrior team. If so, this part of the game would be so much better. It would have been dealing with other types of problems. Not the spoiled emotional temper tantrums that seem to be the norm. I am left with the question of are there no professionals, no mature adults anywhere in this world that I could recruit for my team?

Now I say this having never gotten very far in the game because I would always become too annoyed at this part of the game that I would quit. So, maybe it gets better as the game progresses. Maybe the team bonds more and quits acting like spoiled brats that are still in kindergarten or high school. If so, I do not know.

If micromanaging spoiled brats is something you enjoy, you might like this game. If it is something that annoys you, I would not recommend it. Based only on this aspect of the game I cannot recommend it.

Expeditions: Conquistador starts on the island of Hispaniola exploring a map of jungle trails and mountains, often going off-trail to points of interest. Travelling takes time, and overnight camping provides a time for your party to hunt, research, patrol, guard against overnight thieves and treat wounded soldiers. Troop loyalty is affected by rations and other factors such as bloodthirst, racism and diplomacy. Heavy interactions with NPCs provides a lot of backstory - if you enjoy reading you'll get plenty.

The tactical battles can be affected by traps and barricades you can deploy, and ranged weapon accuracy is affected by cover. The tactical battles remind me heavily of Age of Wonders 3 - similar mechanisms of distance traveled can affect the ability to attack, and attacks of opportunity when moving next to an enemy.

Overall the game-play is satisfying and provides some insight into the historic brutality of the invading Spaniards into South America, while giving some allowance for showing mercy. Select your troops wisely to accommodate how brutal you want to be treating the natives.

So far what I have enjoyed the most is open island exploration while still trying to hunt every night to prevent running out of rations, and the tension of maintaining adequate supplies while trying to keep morale (loyalty) up. Research to make the road a little easier is also a nice side-game. I'm glad I stumbled across this game and caught it while it was on sale.

This is a really great working mixture of tactical combat, moving on the world map like in Heroes of Might & Magic 3, with RPG elements, solving the main story and side quests, with random encounters on world map, and exploring locations that you discover on the map. You can choose the members of your party at the beginning of the game, and during the game you can also add new members that you meet roaming the world.

You play as a leader on Spanish conquistadors party in search for glory, discovering the new world of America. You will encounter a number of Aztec villages, and it is your choice whether you help them or kill them. Whatever you decide to do, you will have to face consequences. I actually aided every Aztec village on the way, and managed to overthrow current Aztec leadership, and establish another Aztec person to become the leader of all Aztec tribes. But that is only one of many possibilities that you can do during the game.

The fighting is very well made, except for the ranged weapons that are pretty under-powered, and not very useful, so I concentrated mostly on melee weapons, and didn't have too much trouble to win every fight on hard difficulty. You can also craft a few items, traps and some fire bombs that you can use during the battles. Those come pretty handy sometimes, and help you win the fight.

So you are a Spaniard representing interests of the Spanish king, but on the other hand you must balance your relationship with Aztec tribes, because they will also help you along the way. This game was very exciting for me, and I enjoyed it completely. I would highly recommend it.

The Conquistadors had it rough when they came to the New World many centuries ago. This game lets you live the life of a leader of a company of Spanish soldiers and I'll tell you that it is no walk in the park. You have to carefully dole out rations to your troops, deal with near mutinies, guard your camp to keep the savages from stealing you blind...or, worse. The details will impress anyone familiar with the history of the Conquistadors and their efforts to subdue the native Central Americans during the 1500's, if only for one reason: No, not to spread the word of God, but to find the unfathomable riches waiting to be taken from the savages...their cities full of gold! Riches await the patient tactician, who builds up his army quietly. Fail and you'll be ritually sacrificed atop a jungle pyramid. That's right...flayed alive and your flesh eaten in a sauce of tomato and chili peppers within sight of your surviving troops. I really had the feeling that I could be swallowed up by the jungle...never to be heard from, again. The only con would be the maddeningly inaccurate firearms utilized by your troops. 8.5/10

I've played many an RPG but I can easily say that Expeditions: Conquistador is one I fondly remember. Despite having a fairly simple framework, there is a lot to appreciate with the design of this game and its gameplay; skills in this game were simple and straightforward, combat was well done and quite enjoyable, and the story bits of the game were fun to read.

Oddly enough, with Logic Artists release of Expeditions: Vikings, I can also say that I can further commend what they did in this game - unfortunately due to a lot of things that were possible done wrong in the other title.

I highly recommend this experience, set forth to conquer the New World!

If you're interested in turn-based tactics this is probably the hidden gem on Steam. It features one of the most interesting and underexplored settings in gaming, and in general.

At the start of the game you select 10 companions from 31 possible options. Each character has their own backstory, personality, role, equipment and side quests. This means there's a good amount of replay value, and allows for different playstyles.

Combat is often challenging but you'll always have options. Through diplomacy, tactical placement of units and barricades, and various skills, you can bring the odds in your favour.

One small gripe I have is the kickstarter backer-only character. There's no way to buy or unlock him now unfortunately.

It isn't a terrible Turn based game. I mean there are spots online where its $3 and the game is 7+ years old.. time to drop it to $10 set it permanently and call it a day so that people can come in and enjoy it then buy the rest of your catalog because they liked the old game you made.

There are some really fun mechanics and decisions in the game. for example you can make an entire party racists and just take every negative action you can take against the indigenous peoples... cause that's an option... etc et al.

If you are a turn based nut.. just pick it up even if its $20 bucks.. whatever youll get a kick out of it.

I like this game, but they did not finish it. The first Island is great you can play a psycho conquistador or open yourself to the secrets of the new world. The turn based fight are interesting. Then you arrive in the continent, you play there until a game breaking bug force you to restart. Also some timed mission are impossible to complete (really, you don't have the time to run from start to finish with the quickest unit, not including the fight). Good idea but poor execution.

Generally I don't enjoy turn based strategy games, I'd played XCOM 2 for a while and never really got the appeal. However, I brought this game on a whim, with it being on sale and generally having an interest in the time period.

I'm glad I did.

Things I liked
Firstly and perhaps most surprisingly for me, I enjoyed the combat. Each encounter is on a hex-based grid system, with each individual character having a set number of actions per turn. This varies dependant on the characters class and level, for example scouts can move further than a soldier. Weaved within this are class abilities with obvious skills like a doctor being able to heal, to more strategically useful skills such as a soldier stunning an enemy for one turn.

However, the game does more with these encounters than I thought it would. Witchdoctors curse your soldiers while natives with dart guns fire from behind and champion native soldiers make a beeline for your doctor under fire from your hunters. Each battle was a challenge but never felt impossible and, perhaps because I find the era fascinating, I enjoyed the feeling of leading the team I had chosen to overcome overwhelming odds for the glory of Spain and untold wealth.

Speaking of your handpicked group, I grew attached to each one and their foibles. Wether it be the racist doctor with a complete inability to shoot a rifle (until it literally all rested on him during one tense battle), the open minded scout who seemed appalled at every one of my less than noble decisions (and made me feel terrible) or the unbelievably aggressive and greedy soldier who I had a love hate relationship with (hated me, I loved that he was absolute tank on the field).

Each decision you make during a story or character moment impacted how the team felt about me and trying to balance morale in camp led to careful decisions about rations, equipment and levelling. The decisions I made felt like they genuinely had consequences and made me feel responsible as I set my superior firepower on shaking native civilians.

Things I didn’t like
You have a limited amount of movement around the map, each step of the horse dwindling down the overall number until you hit zero and camp. In theory I like the idea and enjoyed this while I felt I had to manage resource carefully. However, later in the game food and medicine became plentiful removing the careful balance required to keep the party fed, healthy and on your side. Instead journeys began to feel like it took a long time (there is no fast travel) as I clicked on the location, made sure I moved off the road (higher chance of your camp being attacked otherwise) ran out of movement points, camped with no need for me to assign roles anymore, clicked on location, made sure I moved off the road, ran out of movement points, camped…… you get the picture.

While I did come to love my little team of racists, greedy killers, an awful nun and some admittedly out of place kind scouts, I couldn’t help but feel I wanted more. Your interactions with them are limited to character moments at camp on the odd occasion and their interjections at story moments. This usually can be summed up as the aggressive racist wanting you to kill everyone, while the less racist and generally open minded individual wants you to let them go. It would have been amazing to have more time with your team and see them interact with each other, perhaps through group conversations.

I hate that I am putting this and although this didn’t bother me, I feel it will some people. The graphics are dull, very dull, look here is a book on radiators dull. The colours are muted and they look aged, but it is serviceable. It’s fair to say that they reminded me of a mobile game at time.

Final thoughts
I really enjoyed the experience and, despite understanding there are some clear issues, would recommend whole heartedly.

It’s XCOM, meets the first Baldur's Gate level of companion interaction

I Personally really enjoy these types of games however i did not enjoy this title.
Theme and Music are excellent, however roaming around the map with limited movement is a huge PAIN (King's Bounty map movement would of been so much more satisfying!!!). The combat also seems to be off and i was annoyed each time an unexpected battle would appear. However the follow up game called Expeditions: Viking addresses most of these issues and i highly recommend playing that over this. Also check out King's Bounty/Blackguards if you like this style of game.

Loving this game so far! A great blend of RPG, turn based combat, exploration and micro management even. The music is amazing too. Give it a blast, you won't be disappointed!

Before writing this positive review, i looked through the negative reviews. I feel like the negative reviews have to be from years ago beta versions or something.

Combat difficulty -
I started out on the second highest difficulty and found it pleasantly challenging but nothing crazy at all. 6 out of 10 difficulty. I feel like the people who say its too hard have to be serious mouth breathers.

story -
what? there is lots of story, and the story fits the theme of the game. There enough writing, 5 out of 10. The writing isnt too bad either although some things dont make sense. I'd say its on par with most rpg writing, maybe slightly better.

micro management -
yeah there is a grip of it. Hope you like that.

Anyhow, to get to my own review, Id agree this isn't a triple A game, but in many ways its better. Its an interesting mix of genres, that i think pulls it off really well. Most important of all, I LOVE that choices matter and the game isnt binary. The first time i lost a battle, and realized there was consequences but they werent terrible i was so happy. Its a game where its okay to fail, you dont have to min max power game win everything perfectly. You're free to play messy, and sometimes bad choices are more entertaining than perfect plan.
I can see people buying it with false expectations, because it has a pretty unique mix of stuff. RPG, exploration, turn based tactical game, micromanagement sim.

I think its a super cost effective game. I probably wouldnt pay 50 dollars for it, but for the price its outstanding.

I think the developers should be really proud of this.
