I learned about this game's existence today, 6 hours later and I am convinced this might be the best piece of media ever, this game made me feel more than most people I interact with.

Everyone involved was definitely high on something when making this.

It's batspit crazy, unexpected, bizzare and lots of fun, and it has Lloyd Kaufman, among other familiar b-movie faces. I am loving it!

XBLA was a wild time for games.

LocoCycle was originally an XBLA game [Xbox Live Arcade] from the now ancient times of 2013. Made by Twisted Pixel who also made more esoteric games such as “'Splosion Man” and Ms. Splosion Man. Most of the cut-scenes are FMV. Even having some possibly nerdy cameos in it. I recognized James Gunn pretty quick. I knew him mostly for his collaboration with Suda51 in the game “Lollipop Chainsaw” and his rather boisterous personality in the media.

Ultimately, LocoCycle is a runner. In that, “I.R.I.S”, the bike you ostensibly control moves forward on a track regardless of what you do. You're then met with enemies you'll need to either shoot, fight as well as avoid obstacles along the way interspersed with mini-games and quick-time events.

Premise.

“Big Arms Academy's School of Assassination” has created sentient motorcycles for whatever dastardly purposes. I.R.I.S and S.P.I.K.E. Long story short, I.R.I.S wants to escape Big Arms and S.P.I.K.E. sets out to stop I.R.I.S from doing so. She sets out to [Scottsburg, Indiana] to find the Freedom Rally. But not before getting some maintenance done where our intrepid deuteragonist in Pablo, a mechanic, gets stuck to I.R.I.S and very literally dragged along for the journey.

Mechanics.

Pun intended! Along the way of numerous quick-time events, shooting galleries akin to Cabal for NES [kind of like the forward shooting sections of Contra] and slightly obtuse melee sequences, which make up the bulk of the game — you'll also have to take control of Pablo and repair I.R.I.S.

However, they do repeat this nearly identical specific sequence seemingly for no reason other to extend the playtime. Perhaps it was a budget restraint.

The melee sequences also leave something to be desired. They are very mash-y. I.R.I.S. can throw Pablo into enemies to stun them as well as be a heavy attack — Pablo still has his wrench after all. But the melee combat essentially breaks down into: “hit things a lot until a prompt comes up to counter”.

The game also scores you on how well you perform the quick-time events, how high you get the combo count, how accurate you shoot, etc... giving you more XP to use on upgrades. The XP is used “bank” style. As in, you can put points into stuff without unlocking it. If an upgrade you want is 10K and you only have 7K, you can put 5K into it and 2K into something else, or however you see fit. By the end of the game I had unlocked everything, so it didn't really matter, I also had more than enough XP to unlock the bonus concept art, behind the scenes footage and promotional trailers that can be bought in the main menu.

THE GIST:
I have actually wanted to play this game for a long time. But I just never got around to it. When XBLA was in its prime, I was too busy with Bastion, Mark of the Ninja, and the Trials games. Among others. And this game isn't super great, but it's pretty fun and not very long. You can probably get through it in about 4 hours if you rush. But... I'd probably wait for a sale as well. It's another one of those games where I think its history facilitates more interest than the gameplay itself. But it's still quite enjoyable.

Though it's obvious the developers had plenty of fun in creating the game and the FMVs, the fun isn't translated to gameplay. It's mostly filled with quick-time events and extremely simple buttonmashing that barely qualifies as combat. It's absolutely not a racing game like the tags suggest. One or two somewhat fun moments aren't enough to save it from being a lackluster game.

It may not be pretty, fun, or interesting in any way, but I'm glad they decided to make this game take up 15 gigs by not compressing their horrendously unfunny FMV cutscenes.

I paid $2 to warn you that this is one of the worst games I've played in recent memory. Don't let my sacrifice be in vain.

Seriously, I don't care how you feel about Twisted Pixel's other games, or if you liked Road Rash or other combat 'racers', or what. This is not good. It is not fun. Nothing was fixed from when it was the turd jewel of the Xbone's console launch until it was shoved out the door onto Steam months later to desperately try and make some money back on this abomination. The game is ugly, it is repetitive, it opens with a friggin 12 minute cutscene, and it has no respect for you, your time, or anyone involved in making it.

Do not purchase, period, easily one of the bottom ten games on Steam that isn't just a broken mess.

Funny concept, but there's just not enough actual game in this thing to justify buying it. Button mashy, extremely linear, might be worth picking up at a tenth of the cost.

It had everything to be awesome. We are on the same page as FC3's Blood Dragon. Great pitch, crazy-ass what the fuck universe, dark humor and absurdity. They shot some of it live, they pushed the cheesy button to the max. They've done it all.

Yet, it only last about half an hour before it goes into plain gaming nonsense. Beat'em all are usually pretty damn repetative, this one is no exception. To make you forget that you just mash buttons with no clear goal in life and waste your time, they give you cutscenes, some kind of story, sometimes puzzles to fiddle with, etc. In Lococycle, the story in itself is a trap and we knew that before even buying the game : the story is a (good) joke. So no story to counter the button mashing boreness. But there are cutscenes right ? Yeah, to tell what exactly ? So puzzles it is ? Nope. None. Zip.

Yet, there are the dialogs between Iris and Pablo. That's 90% of the fun you can expect to dig out of the game. But past the tenth time they shoot the same exact joke at you, you may start to feel a little bit too much bored.

In fact there's nothing else to do except mashing buttons in any order you may please. If that's your thing, just forget everything I said and make sure to buy the game. If you just like good games, I suggest you shouldn't.

To me they've messed up the most important part of their own trip.
