The game could actually be nice, but I was kinda shocked when I realized its from 2015. Was it not possible to fix all those little annoying parts in 7 years? It is a game in which you play at least 30% on the ocean and still driving a boat, getting on a boat ,swimming, all those mechanics are so frustrating. If this weren't the case I could look past the other annoying things (eg. sometimes you can switch items when your inventory is full, sometimes not), but in combination this game frustrates me too much

So listen to me. This game is really nice, but it didnt make the cut because of a few main resons (for me)

So lets start with the most annoying. In these roughly 70 mins that I played, I had to download it 3 times, because always was something corrupted or some shit. (Not to mention the countless download errors and shit)

Also, my anti virus went off a few times because it mistook(?) some data as malicious or harmful. Because of that, I couldnt start it anymore.

But, I just want to say something. For the 70 mins, I loved the game. I just had to refund it, because it didnt start or some other weird stuff hapening. I had an amazing time dying, eating coconuts, and throwing up because I accidentally ate raw crab meat.

I may or may not buy this game in a few months again, to see if anything has changed, but for now I will just stick to watching some videos of this game.

The concept is interesting, but the game itself fells really buggy; at least if you aim to play with a buddy.

Grab it for a 5er or wait IF the devs manage to get their code together.

They released about 6 years ago; so it looks like they just dont have the will to finish this game. Since the studio sold almost 35.000 copys they absolutley had the time and the ressources to get this thing going!

But it looks like the devs decided that a half-finished game with massive sold copys is enough for their vision.

Weiter so :-))

Nettes Spiel, macht durchaus Spass. Top. Macht echt Spass.

Es fehlt dem Spiel an langzeitmotivierenden Inhalt. Vieles ist total Buggy.

Aber... die Technik ist der allergrösste Schrott. In Windows wechseln?

I love the sunsets/sunrises on this game. Visually it's gorgeous. The thunderstorms are wow. I have a fear of fish and deep water that I can't see the bottom of, and this game certainly makes my hair stand on end because it features those two things the most.

The ONLY thing I dislike, the trees do not regrow. No matter how long you wait, they will not come back. I find this to be a huge dislike to me, because I'd like to be able to visit an island across the map, use what I need, leave and come back say a few hours later real time and it be somewhat regrown. But this just isn't so. Once a tree is cut, you'll never get that back. You can't even replant them. It's a shame.

That aside, I think the game is worth getting, and I personally am having fun just fishing from my little makeshift house with bed, and waiting out thunderstorms while my garden grows. It's peaceful, usually. I like that.

I love being able to explore and build! To be honest, as much as I love survival games and I did my fair share in this game to search for and hunt for my own food, craft a water still, etc. I had to accept that it was stressing me out, lol. So, I play in Creative Mode and make the wildlife passive. I'm trying to survive in the real world, so having to try to survive in a video game is just too much. In creative mode, I can build and run around and explore in peace. It's extremely relaxing to be able swim alongside a goblin shark (as weird looking as they are) and know it won't eat me! So yeah, that's my review. Love this game!

This game is super fun and pretty straight forward when it comes to your objective. The scenery is beautiful and the game play is smooth. The tutorial helps get you started and from there, it's easy to get going on the story line. The only issue I have had with the game play is jumping. Jumping onto rafts, boats, etc when in the water is extremely frustrating and can take a while if you do not position yourself right. Otherwise, if you enjoy Rust or similar games, I would recommend this one as well. Using the Cartographer map helps tell you your location and is a good way to keep track of where you have been.

If you are here for the co-op, good luck.

When attempting to play this game co-op there are constant issues that plague the game to the point it is near unplayable.

Spending over an hour receiving constant 'world synch' freezes with none of the online solutions working was a fantastic way to ruin the hype we had about this game. Even after searching for solutions (which this error has been an issue for people for a while), trying vpns, trying to reinstall and clearing caches as recommended we still remained stranded and unable to play.

Finally after about two hours of even trying to get the game to play I was able to host the game for my friend and we got to play for an hour before we were randomly disconnected. Today we tried to host a game and had several 'world synch' freezes before random disconnect after an hour.

if you are here to play with your friends, get ready for some headaches. Perhaps this error doesn't happen for everyone but be aware of it before putting your money down.

Multiplayer doesn't work, and deleted all of my single player progress.

Put in 9-ish hours on single player and had a great time. Went to host a co-op room to play with a friend and opted for making a new world so that we could start fresh. Why this would interfere with my single player world is beyond comprehension. Not only did it completely wipe my world, but about thirty minutes into playing my friend got disconnected. He wasn't able to rejoin so we both restarted our games and proceeded to load back in to the same intro sequence with the plane crash. More progress, just completely wiped. Such a shame this game wasted 9 hours of my life just to take it all away including the ability to get a refund.

I've been waiting for 6 years for this game to be completed. Every year I look it up to see if any changes were made, and this year i said f it and bought it due to the co-up being delivered. What can i say, this game is very unpolished, how can this be the case 6 YEARS after alpha was announced? Furthermore, the console has a finished game, yet the PC peeps that funded the actual the alpha are stuck with this trash? Very unacceptable. Items in the tool belt you craft STILL take up a spot in your backpack at the same time... jesus f christ f these devs.

I'll give it a thumbs up because its fun (especially with friends), but it definitely is not a finished product. It's filled with bugs, and the only aspect of survival feels like eating and drinking rather than sharks and other animals you can easily avoid. Sea urchins are more common than getting attacked by a shark

This game needs a lot of polish

I bought this game when I first started gaming on the PC, and I was incredibly sad when my friend and I found out it wasn't multiplayer. Fast forward to a year later, and it is a two-player game!! I love the game, but it is buggy as hell. 1. You can't type in the code to join a private game because it will work for three letters then stop. 2. You get disconnected a million times AND LOSE ALL YOU STUFF IN YOUR INVENTORY. 3. Building is a problem. It works for a bit and then tells you it's red for everything and everywhere but works for your friend. And 4. Some items or objects aren't visible to you but shows up for your friend. Like I said, I love this game and would like some bug fixes/updates to continue having a blast with my best friend.

I'm writing this after only 5 hours playing but still.

The game is nice : graphics are okay, storms are cool, sharks are frightening, and exploring sunken boats is nice.
I kinda likethe fact that you can carry a container full of stuff, making exploration easier ; you find lots of stuff and your inventory is quite rapidly full, BUT you can carry a lot thanks to that.
The islands are not too far from one another, and they're small. It motivates you to go explore with your little raft and I like that.

I'm a little saddened by the fact that rain doesn't provide any water for farm plots nor water stills.
The fire spit only allow you to cook one item at a time (plus one directly on fire )
You must drop your fishing spear to get your fish, and you must drop it to skin it and get to eat... meh.

Sooo here's my pros and cons list:
+ easy to understand game mechanics
+ vitals not depleting too quickly
+ sun exposition to check (very noice idea)
+ plenty of ways to find food and water
+ sunken boat exploration
+ beautiful shallow waters (I like corals sorry)
+ clear crafting menus

- having to throw your coconuts and fish and stuff on the floor to skin (open for coconuts) them
- inventory (cooked food is stacked with uncooked food, and I'm not a big fan of inventory wheels)
- useless rain

Well, that's it. I'll edit this review someday after more hours of gameplay.
Thanks for reading, and sorry for my bad English

This game doesn't technically have a multiplayer function unless your friend is sitting next to you playing on the same computer. The Remote Play doesn't even count as multiplayer or coop, so why advertise that this game has the ability? Don't get it until they have their shit figured out. But according to other reviews, that's not likely to happen any time soon. If you like singleplayer games, great. If you want to play with your friend on two separate PC's? Play The Forest or Raft, or something.

I think I speak for most of us that have been here for a while and say we are a little disappointed to be left behind. The game has so much potential, and is close to being finished. It just needs a little TLC to get there. As it currently is, I wouldn't recommend purchasing it until you have a solid promise of a end-game completion.

Wow...I want to love this game. I really do. But, there is no excuse for how clunky it is. The sound effects are pretty cheesy and cheaply produced. The bats sound like a really cheap ringtone app. The mechanics are not intuitive at all. It makes you feel like you just started gaming an hour ago. It's the kind of game that tells you to press space to climb a tree but when you do you keep jumping like you're being punked. I bought this game when it first came out and I had to give it some time because I figured the developers needed some time to make the game...better. Well, it's been a few years and it's still clunky and mentally annoying. If there's someone you secretly don't like, get them to buy this game. Passive aggressive warfare is pretty much all this game is good for. Sorry guys.

Crafting system leaves much to be desired when building a raft. No clear indication or way to expand the raft. Creates wasted time and materials in a survival game. Need to rethink how things would actually go together. If you are going to have crafting in a survival game, apply some engineering . If I craft a second base for a raft, I should be able to lash it to an existing one instead of having to break it down. dumb

This game really immerses you on a stranded island and does a great job making you feel like you truly need to manage your character's health while not being too demanding to where you feel you can't do anything else except watch your health, hydration, and hunger bars (like an Amazon based survival game I can think of...). There are still lots of glitches, such as sharks simply swimming into land and disappearing, and the crafting/inventory systems forcing you drop something you just crafted before you can pick it up, but they're minimal and really don't affect game play. I do wish there was a little bit more to do other than explore, as after two islands you've already discovered all animals, loot, and sunken ships (besides the bosses). I still highly recommend this game to any survival genre enthusiasts.

The game play is good on single player. However I brought this game to play multiplayer with my mate. It only works if you one of you plays with a controller while the other uses the keyboard. But even then it is SPLIT SCREEN (on both INDIVIDUAL computers). Who thought that would be a good idea? If you have brought this game for multiplayer ask for your money back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. My advice to the developers, add a DECENT multiplayer function that so many other game offer. Such as raft, the forest and 7 days to die. As it stands your best bet for a good survival game with a multiplayer function is to not Buy Stranded Deep, but Instead buy Raft. least then you won't feel conned.

Stranded Deep has been in Early Access for just over six years at the time of writing. I'll be 58 years old on May 2, 2021. I'll be dead before there is a full, final release. But I'm ok with that, because this has just become a joke of irrelevant busywork compared to the original beautiful island survival game I bought oh so many years ago. When I was a much younger man.

True story! My granddaughter just turned six years old. She wasn't even born when this game entered Early Access.

Still early access after 5 years, and basic features like saving when you sleep are not in the game. Sure, you can go back into the shelter/bed menu and hit save after you wake up - if the morning actually loads. Buggy physics, dragging the raft easily flings you into the air and can also somehow crush you. I would love to like this game but the rate of development and the state after years should say enough.

Do not recommend, maybe it'll be worth it after it's finally out of early access.

I'm only writing this review cos I read some of the negative ones and think that either they're unfair or the devs have addressed a lot of the problems since they were written.
tldr: If you're looking for a 'stranded on an island' style survival game, buy this. Its worth the ~£10 and fulfils this fantasy nicely. 7/10.
Like all survival games there is a bit of a learning curve, but its not too steep at all. Most aspects to the game (food, water, crafting) are pretty intuitive. With the basics it teaches you in the (short) tutorial you can work out most things by your self. I had to google the odd thing but so far the wiki has quickly answered all my questions. I think discovering, exploring and crafting new things without googling first is a big positive for the game and probably the most fun and interesting part of the game.
Once you've got some tools and figured out a reliable food and water source you can pretty much do what you like: build a house, search a shipwreck, go hunting... those islands on the horizon? Take a raft and go explore them (which you will need to do, most of the resources on an island don't respawn - but there are so many islands I don't think running out of resources is an issue).
I haven't run into any bugs yet but I am only 8 or 9 hours in. The raft mechanics are my main criticism. Having a crate in your raft will upset the weight distribution by so much it will become pretty much impossible to manoeuvre. I like the idea in theory, but in practise it feels over the top and generally un-fun.
Oh and I advise saving at least once per day so you can reload easily if something goes wrong.
I've found a way to escape (think this was recently added) but honestly, I'm having so much fun I'm in no hurry to do so.
Overall, not perfect but still a fun game and definitely worth the asking price.

After 41 hours of gameplay i decided to write a short review. I love survival games and Stranded Deep is definetly one of my favs. It got his own vibe, its not one of those survival that you are constantly fighting to stay alive so its a more relaxed gameplay than what we are accustomed to in this genre. You can stay 10 days on your island or settle foot on 10 islands in 10 days, you play at your own pace. On the other hand, gathering massive amounts of ressources and getting your skills up to max level is not easy and takes a hell of a time so its a game that demands some patience before getting really comfortable.

The game is solid as it is right now but i hope it will get more content in the future like more crafting items and more mobs maybe more missions also it would be really amazing.

My body physically will not let me recommend this game. The fact that you cannot survive a poisoning because there's no way to cure it until you've invested a couple of hours into the game is repulsive, but I can save scum (force reload) at the least. Completely focus shattering.

This game offers multiplayer yes, but not online. Just... I hate to sound like a jerk, but that's trash.

Every time I have collision with a boat ruins, my player gets stuck in its hull somehow. Not even joking. Literally every time.

I've had this game on my wishlist for over 5 years, and now that I have it... I can say that it's single handedly the greatest let down I've ever had the misfortune of owning.

Stranded Deep is one of those really addicting survival games once you restart a few times (in my case, 3). What I mean by that, is there are many things the game doesn't teach you about--this is good--and benefits you once you know. Of course, you don't have to restart but with this game, those first few days are crucial. There is no source of water until you build a Water Still, something that will take a little while, and although Coconuts provide a little amount of emergency food and water, if you eat more than two or three per day, you'll get diarea (spelling) which drains your thirst further. However, once you know the basics, and have stored up a good amount of crab and fish meat, and have a water still built, the game eases up. You can explore different islands using your raft, too. This is crucial, as while the starting island is big enough, if you're a new player like me, you'll most likely have to travel in order to make things like the Water Still. When on any island other than the beginning island, you can encounter wild animals such as boars, giant crabs and the like. These will attack you and make it real hard to gather new resources. Another crucial part of the game, like a lot of survival games, is building. You can create things like rafts and houses, build into premade structures on certain islands. This is another reason why, despite its slow speed, using the raft is fun, as teh amount of resources needed to build pushes players to further explore the world. Veterans will say this isn't how the game was designed, but for new players, I recommend you set enemies to passive on your first run. if you ever do a second playthrough and know the game, you can play with enemies on aggressive. Overall, this game is a time-eater, and will keep you playing and having fun. I'd recommend this game to classic survival game fans, and newcomers to the genre. 9/10.

Bought this game to play a survival game with my girlfriend BUT..... the multiplayer is non-functioning. You MUST have one person use a controller... and use Steam Play to play together... resulting in graphic degradation because one person is streaming the game from the other person's computer. Furthermore this creates significant input lag for the person who's streaming in. On top of that... alt+tabbing out crashes the game and requires my computer to restart.

Fix the multiplayer and remove the split screen and I will HAPPILY repurchase. It has great potential... but it's not there yet. Refund requested.

This game has been early access for five years, this feels like scam for us who have paid for this :( ... I tried to play it again for few hours. Well, it does not suck, badly. But for some reason I felt it like lite raft? Graphics are good, idea is good, but for some reason ... I just don't like it a lot. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad game, not at all. But it lacks something, it should be better after 5 years of early access.

Game was free for 24h from Epic Store on 28-Dec-2020. I guess that there is lot of players now, but does this help to get game out from Early access? We shall see.

I bought this more for the relaxing and comfy Tropical setting than for the survival elements.
I can build a shelter on a nice deserted island for some much needed escapism.

If you're like me and love Tropical/Snowy settings then I suggest you also buy The Long Dark.

I really like where this game is headed. Been playing for a couple of years and seen many great changes. I am an ancient gamer (age 62) so things like story, physics and realism are pretty important. I played FPS for years and am just more interested in crafting and strategy now. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves tp observe underwater life. The content is extraordinarily beautiful.

Over 5 years in early access on PC, then you release 1.0 on console. Still no news for the PC community, not a word anywhere. 5 years and we just get the middle finger. Don't fall for this POS like i did.

Survival games are the Marmite genre in the gaming industry.
Ironically, if you happen to be in the love camp, you’ll no doubt end up loathing the game as its brutal ways end your life and game prematurely.
It’s an extremely challenging genre which will make you scream with frustration, while still compelling you to keep playing.
Have you ever wondered what it was like for Tom Hanks in Castaway?
Living each day as it comes, learning survival skills as you go along, and scrabbling around for items to make a shelter, and food to survive? Well, wonder no more.

Stranded Deep where you explore an open world, trying to fight the elements while staying alive.
There was always the promise of a storyline, and more in depth gameplay.
This has allowed me to sit here and review it for you.

The action starts with a rather calm setting.
You sit in a private jet on a flight to some unknown destination, for some unspecified reason.
This peace is very quickly disturbed when the shrill alarms sound from the cockpit.
A sudden shudder, and you are free falling through the air.
Sections of the body are ripped from the fuselage, followed by the inevitable crash landing into the sea.
You somehow exit the wreck and must make it to a life raft, from here your adventure begins.

As the cutscene ends, you are given full control.
You are now introduced to basic gameplay mechanics in the form of a short tutorial, this explains how to gather and craft, how to use your watch to observe your stats, and the importance of building a shelter so that you can save your data.
Once the tutorial is complete you are on your own.
Afforded the freedom to explore your first little island, and the world around you.
There really is a lot to see and do; you must hunt animals, farm or scavenge off the land for food and water supplies.
Use your raft, or build a new vessel to cross the open waters.
Find new islands to call home, explore shipwrecks in the depths of the ocean, and clamber across the decks of marooned tankers to search for vital clues to help find a way home.

Whatever task you decide to undertake, you must plan and consider the benefits against the negatives.
Nearly every action is fraught with danger, you must stay alert in order to ensure you can live another day.
Snakes, sharks, poisonous coral, heat, UV, starvation, dehydration, and many more pitfalls will welcome you on your journey. For every negative, there is an action you can complete to overcome it.
You can craft weapons to fight, Antivenom to overcome poisons, a shelter can be made to hide from the sun, and water collectors and cooking areas will keep you topped up on your vital statistics.
These things are all good while you are at home, but when you go exploring you must be prepared.
Do not run before you can walk.

The wondrous thing about Stranded Deep is the freedom to choose whether you live in this dangerous open world for as long as your heart desires, while luck is on your side, or you attempt to complete the story mode.
If you do try to escape your new life, don’t expect to be given clues as to how to achieve this, you must discover the solution for yourself.
This lack of direction will not be to everyone’s liking.
The true hardcore fan will love the challenge of pitting their wits against a harsh and ever changing environment, which has considerably more hazards than it does safe areas.
The learning curve is almost unforgiving, so expect to die an awful lot when first starting out.
Once you understand the basic fundamentals, you should still expect to perish just as much.
You’ll soon learn that the save facility is your best friend. There is nothing more frustrating than being poisoned halfway through a run through, with no Antivenom.
You either panic and search like a crazy person for the much needed medication, or you resign yourself to the fact that this is another save that didn’t get you to the end game.

Character progression is achieved by completing any given task. Hack down a load of palm trees, and your harvesting skill increases.
Smash a crab with a rock, you’ll be a better hunter, and so on and so forth, you get the point. A
ction equals reward. Better stats ultimately make the game easier, by reducing the time it takes to finish a job.
However, this isn’t the only way to make your experience much simpler.
You start out with rudimentary tools, these are made from sticks and stones.
As your skill improves, you can craft better items as long as you have the correct resources.
Searching shipwrecks and Islands will occasionally unearth chests.
Inside these will potentially be rare resources or advanced equipment.
You discover that everything has a limited durability.
Everything breaks eventually, and if your luck is like mine, it usually happens when you are attacking a predator, this leaves you powerless to overcome any attack.

Stranded Deep utilises both a day and night cycle, and varying weather fronts.
As the light changes, the shadows work perfectly in creating a sense of realism.
The night darkness really keeps you on edge. Why not make a torch?
I hear you say! If only it was that easy to come across cloth in the early game!
Your only choices are; walk by the light of the moon, or cower by your campfire.
The howling wind and driving rain looks prefect, the trees sway and the rain hammers down on the water and sand.
Only the brave and stupid venture into the waters in a storm.
I won’t ruin the surprise for you, but needless to say, rafts and waves is not an experience I’m willing to go through again in a hurry.
For the most part the game looks fantastic, the variety of hot and cold colours transport you to the tropical lands, the sea looks cool and refreshing, and the animal animations are smooth.
Snakes are renowned for being experts at camouflage, they are practically invisible.

As you come to expect with a game in this genre, there really is a lot to do.
Once you are familiar with the control system the action plays out very nicely.
The response rate is very good, and a number of shortcuts have been implemented to help with in game tasks, including being able to pin crafting recipes to the screen to help with gathering resources.

One of a few title’s that I have reviewed, where I’m barely scratching the surface of what can be done, and how much I can explore.
This title is vast, with plenty to make you want to return.
If you feel that the designed world gets tedious, then you can create a whole new procedurally generated one to explore.
You have the ability to alter the difficulty, and remove the main predators all together.
There is a leaderboard to compete with friends, and a plethora of easy and difficult achievements to aim for.
As already mentioned, you can spend your whole time surviving and building yourself a home, or you can push to try and escape.
All these options make the replay factor of this game incredible.
I honestly feel the only thing that will prevent you from wanting to keep playing, is the brutal difficulty level.
I found it quite disheartening, until I decided I wanted back in again.

The way the action plays out, and the graphical presentation makes this an extremely immersive title.
I opened by saying that the survival genre is like Marmite.
You either love it, or hate it.
I think that Stranded Deep will emphasise this fact.
This is one unbelievably in depth game that will push its fan base to its limits.
With the options to live out your Tom Hanks, and Bear Grylls dreams indefinitely, this is one that will ensure that you spend many hours trying to ensure that you survive your isolation.
Great value for money, and something that I’d certainly recommend.
Grab yourself a volleyball, paint a hand on it, and keep it with you.
Your “Wilson” may be the only friend that will help to keep you sane is this lonely existence.

First of all, this is a fun game; but it becomes boring. I just wish there was... something else to do besides gather resources, build a base and island hop. It's missing something.

Not overly terrifying except for when a shark is stalking you. If this had maybe other human NPCs that were after you on land or something like that I would really enjoy it.

Yesterday I was out swimming, looking for clay to help build by beach hut when I was brutally attacked by a goblin shark. What? Why would a goblin shark be this close to shore, why attack me and drag me out to sea? In any case, I was pissed. Now, it was personal. I swam to shore to apply a bandage to stop the bleeding, loaded up with some stone age tools and went hunting. Finally the beast was dead, time for the nasty business of cleaning the shark, and harvesting it's skin to make more spears. I loaded up the smoker with some fresh shark meat and decided I had had enough swimming for the day.

I watered my farm plot and crouched at the end of my dock waiting for dinner to be ready. What a pretty sunset. It's good to be alive, but I need a beer.

I have played this game for a while now. Crafting bases over and over with each new patch. The game has changed a lot in the past few years and I am glad they are still polishing it.

There are still a lot of bugs but there is no denying that this is a gorgeous game and there is something cathartic about sailing to new islands to gather wood and other resources. Heck, drop and anchor and do some fishing while I am out. There is an end game now, but that is not why I play this. It is all about making a nice hut on a beach somewhere, sailing around trying to find your base, because you forgot your compass and you accidentally picked up the stick you left that was pointing the way home.

This is a worthy experience if you want a casual survival game with some occasional moments of sheer terror as something nabs you while you are out spearfishing.

Implement multiplier (players can host the multiplier worlds) and adjust the procedural generation parameters to create islands with different biomes along with sizes to make the experience more unique that can add some more value to the exploration. Then add abandoned man made structures and throw that into the procedural generation to spice things up. The maps should also not be deadlocked with barriers as it makes the game less immersive because unconsciously players know they are in trapped in a box. Overall this game is clearly built on exploration so implementing just these simple things will give the player something to look forward too every time they start a new save. I'd say its a decent game right now but the narrative needs some work, and if I were on this dev team I would certainly suggest implementing multiplayer first for the reason that people will have another reason to buy this game which in turn makes the studio or company more money.

I jumped into this game with no expectations and had a blast for the first couple of hours. The whole time I played solo, I was thinking to myself, this would be a lot of fun with a coop partner! I remember seeing a coop option from the main menu screen so I became quite excited to share the experience with a friend.

Unfortunately, what I discovered was that the coop only works in split screen local coop with controllers in the same room. In other words, you can't play coop with your friends online, they have to be in the same room in your house. That pretty turned what seemed like a very promising experience into a huge disappointment. I'm so frustrated by that rubbish I'm ready to uninstall this game.

What a waste of potential...

My biggest issue with the game is that there is no level 2. The game has a well developed crafting, building and some really nice atmospheric effects but I found it a little boring and repetitive after exploring the first few islands. Limited variations in island type and location, a very short day/night cycle and predictable animal spawns make the game feel repetitive. Hostile animals like sharks and boars are easy to kill once you figure them out.

I initially started playing without a compass and it made things a little more interesting until I figured out how the islands were configured, then it felt like there was no reason not to use the compass.

I'm hopping a bigger studio does a better version of this castaway survival game. I'd love to see larger islands, with more diverse fauna and flora, occasional signs of indigenous habitation or abandoned WWII bases/bunkers, bosses integrated into the story and landscape... all of which would make for a more interesting game.

Definitely not in a state where you would expect a 5+ years early access game to be. Lot of QA and simple UI improvements still to be made. Even the end of the game is missing, although apparently already available for consoles for some reason...

This is a relaxing game for me. You can go afk for 20 mins and it's probably not going to matter, but find some shade first because the sun can cook you depending on what time of the year it is. You can build almost any building you can think of. Even build boats with different layouts. I'll build a single raft with an outboard for zipping around the islands, and a big boat with storage for gathering supplies. It's really up to you.

Nice scenery and relaxing ambient sounds, and it's not hard to stay alive once you get the basics down. Having said that, it's for this reason the game is broken. By day 2, you can have a sustainable water supply going, and eat the local crab and fish. Game finished. It's just a matter of not getting eaten by a shark, or dying of poison. Because beyond that, the gameplay is just for fun, and to see what's possible. Build a helicopter. or build a giant fort by the water with docking for your numerous boats. Explore every island and pillage all the supplies. You can go and Hunt the 3 bosses too, but only for a trophy. In the newer console release, you can escape the islands by killing the 3 bosses, but not on PC.

The gameplay is fine. Getting onto boats from the water is a little janky. You tap spacebar, and it works but the animation transition can be jarring. Certain things on the island that you build have no clip, some do... That's a little weird.

Crafting is better these days with the newer release. You can clip the recipe to your screen now, instead of having to go back in to check what you need. Controls are ... Ok. You'll get used to crafting most things. Certain things remain tricky at best. For example, boats. Boats are tricky because they need to be in the water. You have to get everything ready before you attempt it otherwise it might float away never to be seen again. Pro tip; once you have your basic starting raft, next add the anchor. Then from there it's much easier to add a sail or motor or more rafts, because anchor.

I recommend. It's fun. Open world with freedom to do whatever the mechanics will allow. My kind of game

what a shitty way to try and end this game... and in the credits they thank youtubers that stopped playing this game but didn't give thanks to youtubers that have advertised your game and played it consistently...

I could never play this for longer than 30mins, it gets very boring. It was never imersive enough for myself to get invested in it; partially due to poor/ lack of animations.

Awesome game but main branch isn't finished yet and the game cannot be completed.

I have been playing this game, on and off, since it was first released on EA. I install it, play it a bit, and then uninstall it but it is now in a very-nearly-finished state and definitely the most playable it has ever been. Stranded Deep is a very unforgiving game at the outset but loses it's frustration-factor quite quickly as you start to get the basics put in place.

Essentially, the game revolves around sailing from island to island exploring and gathering resources to improve your lot and, ultimately escape from the area (which you can't, yet). There are plenty of islands to explore and each of them has a number of wrecks of varying size, loot richness, and submersion. Most of the items that you will need to survive can be gathered from the islands themselves (rocks, sticks, cloth, etc.) but there are a number of items that only exist as loot in the wrecks and have to be gathered by way of exploring them. This is process is constantly hampered by the prospect of shark attack (although there does tend to only be one shark in the area at a time, so if you can dispatch it, you should be able to loot the area unhampered for a while and provide yourself with a hearty meal and plenty of rawhide). On land, things are generally easier. Almost all of the islands have a couple of giant crabs and most of them also have a giant hog which will attack you on sight but all can be dealt with without too much difficulty and can be looted for food. They are definitely braver than they are wise: personally, if the first thing I ever knew about a person was that they were emerging from the water towing a tiger shark and carrying a label-maker then I think I'd probably leave them alone, but that's just me. A brace of giant crabs and a giant hog will provide you with enough meat to keep you going for days.

The resource availability is set about right. Things that you are going to need a huge amount of tend to re-grow, rocks excepted, or are available in plentiful supply by sailing around stripping nearby islands. I tried to avoid going locust-swarm on the place so that I never completely wiped out any island and didn't leave myself completely devoid of resources in an emergency. Other items, such as crop-plants, are one-offs per island and need to be regenerated by farming, which is a fairly tricky prospect as farm plots need lots of water and an occasional visit to prevent the crop from spoiling. Easier said than done in practice given the size of the map.

I would definitely recommend making a map as you go along. There are a lot of islands and you can generally only see one island on each compass point so getting lost is a real possibility. Personally, I found that mapping out each island was a large part of the enjoyment and I can't really imagine how you could play this game without doing so. Ironically, there is a Cartographer mode that allows you to set the map up as you want and, I guess, actually means you don't have to do any cartography. I haven't used this mode for fear of ruining the experience.

All-in-all, I would highly recommend this game, it is challenging and relaxing in equal measure and does, often, give a real feeling of being lost on a tropical island chain. There are lots of nice little touches like the transition from beach to water where sometimes it almost feels like you are genuinely sploshing into warm Pacific waters. Just remember that, at the time of writing, the game can only be completed in experimental branch. I have just mapped out all the islands, defeated the boss-monsters, and got all the items only to find that the last part of the game has not been finished. I'm not sure if I can be bothered to go through it all again. It was fun but kind of gruelling too.

I've had this game for a long time. I've played this game for a long time. I've pretty much beaten the game as it stands right now and I feel conflicted. This game was beautiful and a load of potential. Sadly, it seems that the developers for some reason updated this game backward from whence it started, most likely due to formatting to console release. I remember when this game had a beautiful life under the water where you could find sunken ships anywhere even in the deepest parts of the water. I also remember when worlds used to be infinite and very fun to explore. Now the oceans lay barren and empty and the world a limited with an out of place yellow floating ball border with nothing but empty ocean after it. I know that the world is limited for reasons of bosses and island creations, but I still can't help but feel that something great was taken away from me. Something that could have grown into something beautiful.
I bought this game near the moment of this release, and I was really excited, I would even go on to play this game for hours on end. I remember when the community for this game was booming and everyone was excited to see what would come next. And for the most part, we were not disappointed. But there was one thing everyone was begging the developers to implement every sing update they posted. Multiplayer, the thing everyone wanted because no one wanted to survive alone. But as the days, months, and even years grew on, they never added it, but they added plenty of things that people never asked for. Eventually, the community started begging and pleading, but as time went on, so did people. The hype died down and the most abandoned hope. What went from people giving great ideas and sharing love with the game soon became people giving small comments of pity as they clung to what little hope they had left for the game. And while the developers watched their fan-base shrink, they decided to take action, but not to give the people what they want, but to instead bring out a console release. At which point I knew they had given up and decided to run for a cash grab before it was too late.
The game itself at first is very fun and exciting with plenty of things to look forward to. But after playing long enough you start to realize the grind and just how annoying it is to find the one thing that you need to start doing things that could be actually fun. Like building fun creations. But the building has changed for the worst as they implemented the leveling system that stopped you from building things if you were not high enough level. This leveling system has to be the worst feature I've ever seen in their evolution going backward. The sharks are fun to fight, but they don't even seem to tip over your raft while you sail to another island. Which in my opinion made the game before very challenging in scary. Now sailing to another island is just boring and feels like a waste of time. They also seemed to make the game more complicated as to get the fuel you need to get potatoes, farms, fuel machines, and Jerry Cans. Whereas before you just needed to find a Jerry can with limited fuel already in it. The progression in this game feels more like it's holding you back from experiencing the fun parts until you've experienced the rough buggy hard parts. It took days just to level up enough just so that I could create something that I've wanted through the entire game which I could also acquire in the previous updates just through perseverance and luck.
Overall this game is dying if not already dead, and though it may seem harsh to say and I may just sound like an old bitter man saying it, I feel that I have been betrayed too many times to have any hope for this game. Though it was fun and I enjoyed myself, I don't think that this game is worth it, it felt like a cash grab in the beginning, and it stayed a cash grab until what looks like the end. This game has betrayed and left it's fans alone for so long to play a game that can only provide so much fun. Is it really too much to ask for one thing? The one thing that everyone wants? I've said it more than once, everyone's said it, but I'll ask one more time...

Beamteam, won't you please add online multiplayer so that I can just
have fun with my friends and we can all know that you listen.

I looooove this game! I play this after a long day at work, it's like my home away from home. Adding a harder difficulty got me reinvested! After playing for awhile, the game became a little mundane because you're pretty much set with a smoker, a few water stills, a spear gun, and a boat. But with this harder difficulty it's got me acting more strategic and paying more attention to my surroundings and it totally makes for a more realistic survival situation. I recommend this to anyone looking for a simple yet beautiful open world survival game! The updates just keep getting better and better (:

I’m not sure why, but for some reason, I keep accidentally waiting to buy games until juuuuuust after large content patches hit. I don’t keep tabs on these games, I don’t follow the developers, and I don’t track the news about the games. I just happen to purchase them, find a lot of content in them, and I end up really enjoying these games, even though early adopters may not have. It could be my superpower. Or I’m just frugal. Is frugality a superpower?

For example, I love No Man’s Sky! I’m not ashamed to admit it. But I also didn’t play it when it first came out. I played it after several large updates came out, and I found so much to do in it. My wife and I spent so much time in that game, and we couldn’t understand why people said there was nothing to do. We eventually researched which pieces of content came with each patch, and we were blown away by how much was added after release, and how those are the parts of the game we loved.

Now don’t get me wrong, after enough time, any game will run out of things to do. But until that happens, I had a lot of fun with No Man’s Sky, and I’m finding myself in the same boat (har har) with Stranded Deep.

I had Stranded Deep on my wishlist for a long time, but the lack of development updates and the lack of content was always a turnoff for me. I decided to finally try it, and I’m so glad I did! Luckily, they just released several big patches of content, and it’s been an absolute blast. I’m playing with no wiki, and I’m not googling anything. I just jumped in and tried not to die. I played it my way. I found this to be a more enjoyable way to play, as when I research too much for games, they turn into to-do lists of chores rather than sandbox experiences. Clay? What’s clay? Where do I find that? How do I get that? Who knows?? Maybe that shark knows!

I also find that I run out of things to do too quickly when I use a wiki, so this may be why I didn’t run out of content. I set my own goals and used my imagination to keep me playing. The addition of achievements is also great, as when I run out of stuff to do, those give me some neat ideas to try. To top it all off, it looks like the devs are still updating the game at the time of this review, so there should be even more to do!

Gameplay-wise, the game is great! It should feel familiar to any fan of survival games. It looks great, the sounds effects are immersive, and the controls work well. I played with a controller, so I could only imagine it’d be even better with a mouse and keyboard. I really like the feel/rate of survival bars in this game—hunger, thirst, etc. In some survival games, those bars drain WAY too quickly, and they take WAY too much time/resources to fill up. When this happens in games, they become so tedious, and I find myself babysitting bars on a screen instead of playing the game. This game is about exploring and sailing, so I was happy to see they didn’t drain the bars just to artificially pad the length/difficulty of their game.

Setting sail for the first few times also felt exciting and new. Scraping up enough supplies and hoping to make it there and back alive was pretty rewarding. Again, some games get so lost in the management of bars, you don’t get to truly appreciate the world you’re playing in. Stranded Deep did not do that, and I’m so glad!

To sum it all up, I would highly recommend this game. Will you get 100’s of hours out of it? Probably not. But will you get enough enjoyable hours out of it to justify a purchase? Absolutely. I would encourage you to not use a wiki and see how it goes, as it added to my enjoyment. Thanks to the devs for a great game, and for adding new content to it!

So, it's difficult to make this review. I LOVE the game, it's perfect for my mood currently. However for some reason my saved game ran into a bug that didnt allow me to open the Crafting menu. I thought it was isolated to that game. So i restarted the game (which sucked because I lost everything) but the issue persists on the new game! I've tried reinstalling, wiping out the data folder, verify caches, everything people suggested and nothing worked. So essentially I have a broken game in my library at this point until they fix it.

As other reviews have said, the multiplayer is not really multiplayer. The coop is two people controlling the same person, so it's super awkward and makes no sense. The game itself has potential, and does make you feel like a survivor with the storms and other weather effects.

I wish I could refund it, but I tried playing it longer than two hours. RIP.

gets boring quick, would be better is stuff could regrow. i cant believe that new console players got the ending before pc who have supported this game for years.
the update with the giant crab and hog didn't even use original models.

its buggy. land sharks are funny as hell. poison flower thingys spawn under rocky terrain making you unable to see them and you get poisoned. but holy hell do i have a good time playing this game. i really enjoy it and the buggs are able to be dealt with, dont walk on rocks, and get on a hill when daddy tiger shark decides that no land will stop him on his quest to your ass. i enjoy the crafting side of the game quite a bit and resource collection is pretty fun. but i think my favorite part is the exploration. finding an island with everything you need is the best. and not having enough space to bring everything back makes it thought provocing too. long story short, its a buggy mess of a game that needs sooooo much polish yet is a blast to play.

I bought this based on Steam's recommendation, because I played a lot of Subnautica and The Forest (both of which are amazing games).

Stranded Deep is ok, but not quite as good as the two previously mentioned survival games. There's just some stuff in the game that doesn't seem very well thought out.

The reward structure for exploration is just not refined enough. The basics of survival are easy to take care of, after a day or two in game you should have food and water completely situated. After that the real progress comes from sailing to other islands and diving in shipwrecks.

Sailing to other islands is mostly fine, but your limited inventory space makes it really start to wear on you as you slowly move resources 10-20 at a time back and forth to your main island. This can be slightly helped by carrying a few storage containers on your raft, but the storage containers aren't very large and they also have a habit of sliding off or flying into the middle of the ocean. The game would be GREATLY improved if you could build or connect storage directly to the raft.

The other exploration is diving, which was a frightful experience at the start because there are a LOT of sharks in the ocean. Once I got over the fear of the sharks though, I realized that they are actually kind of derpy. They don't do a terribly good job at killing you, and tend to just harmlessly swim straight through you or completely miss you unless you stand perfectly still. But it's all kind of a wasted effort because 90% of the shipwrecks are just full of worthless flashlights. I wish the sharks were less common and more impactful, because they're mostly just an annoying way to spend throwing spears at the moment.

There are some end game bosses that I can't manage to find in my currently game, but I did watch some videos of other people killing them and they seem to suffer from a health pool problem. With the limited inventory space, you can only carry so many spears at once, and it looks like the bosses have WAY too much health for the amount that you can carry. The videos I watched had people diving into the ocean just to try and pull their thrown spears out of the boss to reuse them because they ran out.

The building elements could also use a lot of polishing up. I built some shelves in game only to find that they didn't actually work, they were just kind of one solid collision block, so I can leave a handful of items hovering a foot above the shelf, but I can't put items on an individual shelf. It would be nice to have a few cosmetic items thrown into the sunken ships just to make those more interesting.

And the final gripe I have with the game is that there are finite resources. I found myself, for the first time in any survival game, starved of rocks. The only resource that seems to grow back are the leaves that you can use for fires and to make rope. There seems to be enough resources in the game to get you through, but it's just kind of unnecessary to make me sail 6 miles just to find a stick.

All in all, it's a competent game, with a few rough edges that will hopefully get smoothed out in the future. I can recommend it because it's a decent way to spend 10-20 hours, but it's not as good as The Forest or Subnautica, so definitely play those games first.

Bought this during early access as it looked like a fun game. And it was! They've added a load of extra context/features since, but the actual functionality of it all is pretty trash compared to where it used to be, which is crazy to me. Physics seem to go wrong significantly more often than they used to and a lot of the small changes over time have made it less fun to play, not more. Wouldn't recommend spending money on this one.

For those not sure - for the money its worth it. Graphics are nice, interaction with the world works well if a bit clunky at times. A bit aimless but you're there to survive.....the raft building is fun and you can experiment a fair bit with materials and shape

Haven't played the 'End game' part as its just been released, but I feel I've had my moneys worth to date. With just under 40 hours played for a tenner. Where else can you get entertainment for an hour for 40p? :)

Five years this game has been in early access. The devs just decided to release a console version. The PC version is nowhere near completion. There's been nothing but hotfixes. No new content. No end game. Etc. Don't buy this game unless it's out of early access or you somehow get it for free.

One of the most relaxing and calming games I've ever played. Until you're on a raft on the ocean at night. Then it's absolutely terrifying.

From the 100+ hours I have played of this game I can tell you that this is a good game. It is quite fun in the beginning and when you fight the bosses, but in mid game and end game it gets quite repetitive and just a constant grind of fibrous leaves and killing sharks. The only complaints I have about this game is that they could add in some more bosses and add a craftable airplane because whenever you kill a boss you get a airplane part and is just a tease knowing you have airplane parts but can't use them. Overall this is a good game but if you do want more action and less grinding I would recommend other games.

Beautiful and relaxing.

Don't normally write reviews this early but there appears to be a spate of negative reviews so just wanted to add my two cents.

There is no storyline to the game but that was never really an issue for me, a good chunk of survival games just throw you into a giant sandbox and just let you create your own story. Sometimes you don't want a story, sometimes you don't want a challenge to overcome nature. Sometimes you just want to scuttle about on beautiful beaches and dive in lush waters and build fires/shelters/homes.

I haven't played long but its been gorgeous relaxing and I'm not expecting any more from the game.

The price has increased and I think is a little steep, I think this is a £7ish game really, though it does go very cheap on sale, I believe I grabbed it for around £2 and you can't really say fairer than that.

Five-plus years of Early Access and the game still isn't finished. Still no endgame, still no story goal, still no chance to get rescued.

The concept behind the game is fantastic, but unless you're looking for the cycle of 'Manage resources -> build shelter -> explore for better resources -> build a bigger shelter -> realise there's nothing you're actually working towards' then this game isn't the one you want to buy.

Has potential to be a good game. Still in the heavy development stage at the moment, adding new content and ideas whilst ironing out bugs and glitches. As yet there is no real gameplay element other than survival and craft (which is unfinished but still fun for a while). Looking forward to a complete game with the addition of a storyline, tasks, missions, goals, puzzles, progress, ending etc.

The game engine is impressive and already pretty solid with fairy decent visuals, effects and immersive sounds, water effects, atmosphere, physics, weather system and lighting. The models and textures look good. Animations are a bit unnatural - especially the main player character when he moves/runs around in 3rd-person view - having said that, it doesn't break the immersive feeling of the game in 1st-person view. There are a few annoying graphical glitches and bugs which could easily be fixed but the basic structure of the game is there and solid.

This game does manage to produce a fear-effect quite well, especially when entering the open waters with sharks. The scale of the game map is pretty small and the details are repetitive and fairly sparse. It looks good visually but it doesn't really feel alive yet. The storms look/feel really good but the timescale is too quick, day and night and weather cycles rapidly and survival feels hurried and pressured - a raging storm turns back to a sunny day again in a matter of minutes and the character gets thirsty and hungry way too quickly - it's easy to starve to death and overheat before you've have had chance to explore immediate surroundings or make a basic stone tool to cut down your first tree.

When you arrive on an island, quickly build a shelter and collect resources for making/crafting weapons and items. Wander around aimlessly, kill and eat a few animals, venture into the water to see the fish and sharks and find a few sunken wrecks. Awe in amazement at the water and weather effects, then eventually move on to the next island and repeat the process until you starve or get bored to death. Frustrating that the game forces you to hunt and eat animals for health - trying to eat plants and coconuts is rewarded with poisoned sickness - which is not in keeping with real-life survival and prep scenarios. It would be better to allow carnivorous or herbivorous choices and maybe have temples/caves/underground/underwater areas to explore - just something to lift the monotony by making it a truly sandbox survival experience, rather than predisposed.

Good scope for the game in the future - development seems pretty slow/stale but the existing experience is quite good for dipping in every so often. See this more as a playable demo of what's possible in future releases as it gets more and more refined. No long-term playability as yet. After the initial awe and excitement of playing a few times, the novelty quickly wears off due to lack of gameplay/progression but it's definitely still worth a purchase to support and motivate the developer and experience the game so far - hopefully this will become a gem of a game. Looking forward to future releases!
