Cities in Motion

Cities in Motion
CM1 is from 2011 and the predecessor of CM2 from the Cities series.
A local traffic simulation game: build, manage and manage your own traffic network. Keep in mind that as time progresses, the constantly changing requirements must be met in order to be successful. You should keep in mind that your range of transport has a direct impact on the growth of the city and the type of residents or the settlement of companies. This works quite well for the successor, but it is implemented much better.
At that time the graphics were ok, but you shouldn't expect this to still be the case. The demands on 3D graphics have increased a lot, but it is still good enough.
There are over 30 different means of transport and vehicles available, which also do what they should in the game. Good route planning is therefore necessary, but linking the lines to one another is even more important.
You play in a period from 1920 to 2020.
There are several cities to choose from different countries.
So far so good, I can recommend it because it is well done and does not get boring quickly.
In my opinion, it is a good introduction to the world of this type of game, since you can buy the game and all the extensions for little money here. So you can find out whether you like this in principle and can also use CM fully.
The game is harder than it looks and you can see here that a lot has been done to keep the fun and the requirements in balance. If you like the game and the concept, you can get CM2. Is much more developed and extensive.
So I can only say if you feel like it and like games like this, buy it, you make no mistake. I can recommend it although it is a bit old-fashioned.
Here you will find many more reviews, including CM2.

Kommt darauf an.

Also insgesamt ein super Spiel. Nein, sogar mein Lieblingsspiel. Also definitiv Daumen hoch!

Wirklich liebevoll gestaltetes Spiel!
Leider gibt's in diesem Cities in Motion keinen Nachtmodus.
Dennoch empfehlenswert!

I started off playing Cities In Motion 2 because a friend had it but, now that I've seen it on sale I decided to try it out and it's quite good if not, even better than Cities in Motion 2 when it comes to Transit building simulation. Tons of fun spending time building out and watching cities.

Recommending Cities in Motion is a bit difficult. While the game is good, there are several other games that scratch the transport management itch a bit better. The game still looks good despite its age, however the building options feel limited and the mechanics unpolished. Little functions like hotkeys to close information panels or toggle between select and build mode are oddly absent. The UI can also be a bit frustrating to work with as every action feels like it requires one too many clicks to complete.

Despite all of that, there was something really satisfying about watching my transit networks grow and intertwine. The constantly shifting economy also kept me on my toes as each line required occasional tinkering to keep it profitable. Ultimately, if you really enjoy games like Transport Tycoon or Transport Fever, then I'd recommend Cities in Motion.

+ Good music
+ Graphics have aged well
+ Shifting economies add some challenge
+ Large maps
+ Ability to play through different eras

- Missing some quality of life mechanics
- Limited maps and building options
- Difficult to see the efficiency and profitability of each line
- Traffic mechanics can be a bit frustrating
- Clunky UI

A friend had recommended this game to me, so presumably there are some people for whom it is OK. But I wish I had not bought it. I got it significantly cheaper, along with lots of expansions, but these are useless to me since twemty years of playing computer games, a PhD in mathematics and a great motivation to play precisely this game with its great setting and beautiful graphics are clearly not enough to learn who to operate it. It also takes the kind of patience that is normally required to learn to play a musical instrument.

Just as an illustration of the problems: This is probably the only game I ever played in which I was unable to finish the tutorial because it was too hard. The tutorial tells you to build a metro line, which should be doable because at that point you can already build bus lines and tram lines. It isn't. You have to do certain things in certain ways now, but of course in a game that is clearly proud of its unintuitive interface the tutorial lets you figure this out by yourself.

And each time you guess wrong, you run out of money. So you must restart the tutorial and suffer again through the explanations of scrolling and panning, building bus lines and tram lines etc. Suffer, not rush, as the poor user interface and errors in the tutorial make sure you need your full concentration and a lot of time before you get to metro building again.

I never figured it out. IIRC, after several attempts I had a metro line connecting two stations but could not add trains to it. I don't know why because the 'tutorial' obviously never bothered to mention this detail any more than the countless others I finally found somehow.

Actual games (without metro lines, of course) were no fun either. The fight against the user interface always dominated any other challenges the game may provide.

Did I mention the beautiful graphics and the extremely appealing idea of creating public transport in an existing city? Sigh.

The most addictive transportation management game since Chris Sawyer's Locomotion. The graphics are still top-notch after 10 years since its release. The game encourages you to manage your fleet of transport across a time-space continuum, managing different kinds of transport from early bus models to electric trams and rails, even the sea ferries. Cities in Motion has one of the best and most realistic economic model in real world cities terrains. The streets and buildings are modeled with the reality (although they might not be 100% accurate) as they will not grow like that in A-train. From time to time, there will be different citizens' demand of your transport company. Setting the correct level of fares while meeting all the different demands among the population stratum, pacing of the vehicles with the no. of vehicles bought and the no. of stops on the streets and bustling office condos, public stores, churches, etc., running the company most efficiently and effectively, while making all the earnings to pay for your company's survival, employees' wages, capital expansions like better comfy bus/ train stops and tracks laying, repairs and maintenance costs, advertising and promotion, etc. Throat-cutting competitors and loan-sharks can sink you down quickly if you mismanage consistently. Plus there a lot of challenging scenarios to choose from. The best transport-sim in recent years and none other lives up to the same standard so far. Highly re-playable and highly recommended. Score: 10/10.

I only recommend this game if on sale (I paid £3.74).

As others have said, you have to play by the rules set down by the developers. For instance, if you have a bus stop that is used by 2 lines then, firstly, passengers can buy a ticket on line 1 and then use line 2 for free, and secondly, there is a high probability that this bus stop then gets too many people and before you know it there are 100 people waiting for a bus!

There are also other niggling issues;
The tutorial is inadequate - it only tells you the absolute basics.
To replace a bus you have to sell the old bus and then buy a new bus - and when this spawns into the game, it then ignores anybody at that stop.
Building tram lines (that are not a looping circuit) are a PITA as you need enough space to create the circular terminus.
The capacities for the buses and trams are pathetic, for example, the Pathfinder Plus (which looks like a Routemaster Double Decker bus, capacity 64) only takes 20 passengers!
The information available in the game is mainly useless, there is no way of finding out which routes make a profit (or loss).

The scenarios are average at best, with a lot of the objectives for too easy and pointless - for instance, pause game, build bus route to remote farm, buy bus, activate line, unpause game, objective complete, pause game,
delete line (all in less than a minute!).

Visually, it looks pretty for a game from 2011, but you will need a decent amount of RAM (I recommend 8GB) otherwise you will get lag, as all the assets are loaded into RAM at the start of the game.

In fairness, the developers put a lot of love and attention to detail into this game. However, almost 50 hours in, I can't honestly say I have enjoyed the game. Although I did have fun creating the routes, until of course it all went badly wrong :(

Buy the game on sale and if you don't like it then it's not an expensive mistake. Of course, if you do like it then there is a ton of DLC you can buy.

I rate the game 6/10.

Highly recommend. Even with the serious issues this game has, it's still a little more fun than CIM 2. There are some seriously frustrating problems with making money in this game, because as you throw more buses or trams at a problem, they just clog up traffic, creating gridlock, while hundreds of potential suckers, er, customers walk away hating your guts. Conversely, you can just take out a maximum loan and run subways for an insane amount of profit.
That might sound NOT fun, but CIM sets up a cool little world for each scenario. The game world looks great, there are really satisfying sound cues for finishing a quest, and the sounds of the world are really well done. This is a game for folks who like to look around and see what's going on. Each person on the map is select-able, with stats on where they live, where they work, and where the heck they are trying to go. That includes people in their cars on the roads.
There is plenty of room here to try out new things. The game rarely tells you exactly how to achieve a goal, it just gives the basic target info, and it's up to you to solve the problem. Meanwhile, you can be building a bus line in the corner of the map that only goes 3 blocks, just to see who rides it. To me, open world means fun.

Basics: A.I. doesn't respond logically so I don't believe there are sensible solutions to moving traffic along.
If you want, you can just borrow money and win most scenarios with subways (no need to repay loans if you succeed).
The fun part is really just the goofing around and the satisfaction of finding a profitable line that doesn't stack up traffic.

A whole lot of fun potential, with or without dlc's. (have tried a few, none disappoint) I think the easiest way to sum it up is that this is an average business sim, but superior for those that just want a toy train set.

Good premise but poorly executed.
You create transportation routes using different modes of transportation (bus, tram, metro/subway, waterbus, helicopter), you designate stops/stations, you manage the vehicle type and number of vehicles on that route, and you set the wages of the employees.
One flaw is that it rewards shorter transportation routes. You collect passenger fares but the passenger only pays one time for the entire route. So if you have a long route, you could transport the passenger across the entire city and they would only pay 1 time. This is opposed to numerous shorter routes which forces the passenger to pay each time they transfer. What would make more sense is if you could manage a distance payment system.
The most annoying flaw is overcrowded bus routes which makes no logical sense. If your bus route is popular, there is more congestion on the roads. That's because people drive their cars to the bus stop. Overcrowded bus stop also cause people to obstruct traffic. This is completely stupid. You have to raise bus fare prices to reduce the number of passengers and find the right balance so the bus stops and roads aren't congested.
As another person put it, this game is really a puzzle solver masquerading as a simulator.
Verdict: Don't buy.

This game isn't perfect, but it is fun and addicting if you like sim city and/or transport games. The bad part is it has some bugs, fortunately you soon learn to work around them. It force closes. The traffic rules for cars are so draconian and absurd. On a six lane road cars will sit in the right lane for hours for the bus (or whatever) to move, yet the lanes to the left are open and free. There's some bizarre bugs with the routes for ferries (called water taxis) and helicopters that you just have to accept. I've learned to save the game before making any changes to those routes, so if the changes don't work you can go back. Also the stats provided in the game are worthless compared to those you get with other simulation games. Now for the good, which is why I love this game. This game will play with shockingly little memory. It plays just fine on my netbook, which makes it a great game for your downtime while traveling. And yet for a game that plays well on an underpowered computer, it has great graphics, and is fun, and the good outweighs the bad.

If you've ever been annoyed at public transport, here's one for you. See if you can do better.
Cities in motion is a simulator game where you can be the one to work out the public transport of a city. Sounds easy enough, just some bus lines here and there. A tram line on this road here, and everything is connected.
And then you give it a while, and there's 8 busses waiting for that one bus stop with a waiting line of 250 people. Clearly you didn't think that one through. But that's okay, where a normal job as public transport planner would have you fired for that, here you can try again or fix it somehow. So then you can add subway stations, boats, and helicopters, and before you know it you're covering the city and hours passed.

The interface and controls are easy to learn(If a little odd at times), and the game mechanics are easy enough as well. However, mastering the game mechanics and planning out the city public transport is much harder. You'll have to go through several attempts to figure out what goes wrong and how to fix it, and you may want to take a look at the actual public transport system in your city for ideas.
Edit: Also, it has some inaccuracies. Amsterdam does not look anything like that. And you can just build a subway tunnel under the Berlin wall. Replacing old vehicles is a pain too.

As for the technical details, it's surprisingly good. Every citizen appears to be modeled*(*I didn't count them. at least a large enough amount of them to make the cities feel alive), and you can follow them through their morning commute, shopping trips, and visits to others. And this is all supported by the game mechanics, you can set a citizen as interesting person, and the game will show you a portrait of him where he goes. (Warning: Long) In my latest case, I looked at a factory in Vienna, and found a red car driving from the top of a parking garage(Mentally following it through the roof as it drove down) next to it down to the ground floor and onto the streets. So I asked, why is this person not using the public transport system to work and back? Wilhelm Klein, factory supervisor - Drives by car from his home, connected to the public transport, to work, also connected to the public transport system. He then went shopping at a big department store, which too was connected by public transport.
After that, he went to a church far outside of Vienna, in a smaller village where I did not yet expand to. He then returned home.

I didn't have the money, but I figured I'd have to connect that place somehow when I did get money. So I went on to look around town, just watching people board the bus and go around. After a while, Wilhelm was moving again. Another day at work. This time, he wandered to the tram stop down the street and was quickly picked up by one of the passing trams. He then got out at a connection to the subway, but instead took the bus at that same subway station, and rode it all the way down to work.
A while after, he boarded the bus again and I watched him go back to the tram station for what I assumed to be the way home. But not this time. This time he went into the subway, so I look at his info screen and see his destination is a ministry building near the town center and then back home with a direct tram line. I connect the extra village with a busline, and I speed up time a bit.

When I check back on Wilhelm, he has a new job. He is hired as secretary in the ministry building he went to way back then. Perhaps he couldn't handle his supervisor job at the factory, or perhaps he never really wanted it in the first place.
But either way, Wilhelm is happy now, and he can go with a direct tram line from his home to his work, and from there, anywhere in Vienna he wants.

Mission succesfull, the citizens of Vienna can stay in motion
