Ah this game is super nostalgic. I used to play this game on Xbox 360 and I can't believe it that it is from 2007.
Honestly graphics still hold and the game looks awesome. Gameplay too holds up awesomely.
Voice acting could be better and the story is alright.
If you are looking for a fun action game with mechas and alien lifeforms, this game is definitely a good choice.

This is a great game and i feel sad to be forced to give a such low score because probably this
game deserved a lot more but game has flaws and problems and so pay the penalty for this.

First issue, the game has some serious graphic problems, it can happens that graphics glitch
and only way to fix is to quit the game and run it again, if this happens at beginning of a mission
fine, but if this happens toward the end, the glitch not allow you to see anymore so is very
annoying, luckily it happened to me just in some of first levels but the problem is there.

Second problem is that the controls for PC version (without a gamepad) are really awful, so they
will make the game even more hard than what it is and the game is pretty hard, in many bosses
fights i was praying in languages i even don't know .
Final game boss fight is one of the most annoying i've encountered in a long time.

This said, altough the plot is a bit confusing and nothing special, the fights are quite satisfying
and enjoying, in each mission you'll start with a short quantity of Thermal Energy, the Harmonizer
used by Wayne and Basil use TE to heal the user if harmed, so, considering the maximum
amount you can get is 9999 i suggest to play each mission with the main target to gather as max
energy as possible because at the end of each level there is always some boss/mini boss so
this energy will help you a lot to survive for a longer fight, i would say it's essential if you not want
to restart the whole mission from beginning.
TE is used also by some of the energy weapons like the EM Laser that is not just my favorite
weapon but also, in my opinion, the most powerful one, i was able to destroy some hard bosses
just with that and without using a VS.

So, overall a good game that would recquire a remaster and some improvements.

My Final Score is

72% /100

A solid alien/mech game that was fairly ahead of it's time with it's mechanics and ideas. I played this game when I was younger a few years after it came out on Xbox 360 and I absolutely loved it.

I decided to recently re-vist it to see if it's still good as I remember it. It is very good, but my only compliant is that each level has a boss. The bosses can vary from laughably easy to incredibly gimmicky and annoying. Giving it artificial difficulty. I don't mind hard games at all, in-fact I love a challenge, but I hate gimmicks in games.

The story is... okay? Nothing crazy good or anything but it ties itself pretty well and I can't complain about it too much.

The game supports controllers very well. As well as decent keyboard and mouse support, only problem is that the in-game hints and instructions are based off controllers.

The game is fairly short as I completed it in about 5 hours, going about it casually and not 100%ing it. I would compare this game is to a non-horror dead space with mechs.

Overall I would recommend it, probably would just say buy it on sale mainly cause it doesn't have multiplayer anymore, nor does it have achievements.

About 8 hours of concentrated [strike]аutism[/strike] quality extraterrestrial extermination action.
The story manages to be over the top laughable and endearing. It's the japanese scripts - no matter how сringеworthy are the dialogues (partly due to 'lost in translation' factor, but also because of very slow, methodical exposition), they always successfully manage to humanize all of their characters, including the villains, and that's a commendable quality, sorely lacking these days.

Gameplay-wise it's a deceptively intense third-person shooter with rather unorthodox combination of restricted speed of movement and a versatile moveset your character possesses. He moves slow and some AOE enemy attacks can stunlock into a merciless combo beating, yet he can dodge a near death explosion by a hair with a last second crouch jump or a rightly timed a grappling hook shot to ascend to a higher plane, mount a nearby mecha and return the punishment to his(your?) offenders. The time limit, fashioned into a constant thermal energy drain that you get by defeating your enemies (and sometimes by destroying your own mechas in dire situations) also adds to the thrill of survival that, especially on higher difficulties, constantly forces you to correctly prioritize your targets and a distance, from which to dispatch them, so that you'd have enough time to collect precious thermal energy source before it evaporates (which could not be more frustrating, because those energy puddles also fuel your automatic healing potion dispenser - simple, but brilliant gameplay mechanic)

Animators who've worked on this game should get a medal.
In, short - yes! Get this oldie, but goldie & play dx10 version, max out all the graphics settings and marvel at how well the game holds up on its visuals department, as well.

It's a really fun game, got it on the sale for a fix of ex troopers.

my review is positive but be aware that the game has DX9 and DX10 modes, and DX10 mode pretty much doesn't work.

Windows 7: constantly freezing and crashing, can't be played more than 20 seconds. something as small as opening the settings can make it crash.

Windows 10: won't open. missing steam.dll but adding it back doesn't fix the issue for everyone.
(btw, don't download this file from the internet, get it from your own steam folder )

DX9:
only tested on W7 for now, it works fine but has occasional stutters.

I had a more detailed review originally but steam wouldn't let me submit it. so that's that.

cap com, please, if you won't give us ex troopers at the very least fix these games.
these are the closest we have to the gin gira adventures in english.

Old but gold. Really enjoyed the story in this one. Few minor graphical glitches, but nothing game breaking. Lip sync isn't all there and the combat in the mech suits can be a bit janky. Gun play is ok but nothing too impressive. The final level is a bit over the top and feels like the game wanted to be something more then what it actually is. Overall, good story and decent graphics (in cutscenes). The tundra atmosphere is definitely pretty cool since most games seem to be jungle, desert or space when it comes to sci-fi aliens.

Giving this a thumbs-down not because the game is bad, but because I don't recommend it.

When I first played the demo of this game back in 2007, I thought this was the prettiest game I've ever played. The motion blur and animations together created this very cinematic effect. It looked like Starship Troopers in snow. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original pitch for this game. I think to this day this is one of the most cinematic-looking games I've ever seen. While models and textures look a bit dated, the special effects are still gorgeous and give the game this very unique atmosphere. The setting is very cool too.

The biggest problem of this game, I think, is that once you go beyond the visuals, it plays like a very generic TPS. You just run from spot to spot taking out enemies, and there's nothing that would make the game stand out from the sea of other generic shooters. Yes, there's a mechanic where you gotta pick up the orange goo to not freeze, but it's basically a glorified timer. Yes, there are mechs, but they play like a clunkier version of your own character and get old pretty quickly.

All enemies could be divided into two groups: humans and bugs. The humans and the smaller bug enemies get killed by just shooting at them, whereas bigger bugs have highlighted areas that you have to shoot, like in old arcade games. The shooting is good in general. but these bigger bugs quickly become a chore to kill. The game likes to throw too many of them at you, and they're all bullet sponges. Most areas where you fight bugs are all pretty open, so there's no tactics involved whatsoever.

The game shines when it throws you into these tight locations with lots of cover, various weapons and human enemies. With the ability to freely traverse these tight locations, it gives you a lot of space to maneuver and maximize your efficiency. You also have this anchor/hook that allows you to get to higher ground or sometimes jump over the wall and surprise your enemies. It sucks, however, that there are plenty of invisible walls, so the full potential of this mechanic is not realized.

There are plenty of gorgeous animations in this game. It's pleasant to observe them on enemies, but when your character is performing an animation, it pretty much incapacitates him. You can't break up your reloading animation to do a melee attack. If you get hit, you can't get up until the animation is finished. Things like that make the game feel very clunky and eventually leads to cheap deaths. The controls can sometimes also cause problems. Picking up weapons, attaching them to the mechs, removing them from the mechs and getting inside of the mech are all perfromed with the same button. And again you have to wait for every animation to get completed in the middle of a fight.

The shooting in general is good. The shotgun especially is very satisfying to use. But you only have two weapon slots, and many weapons are kinda useless. For example, the rocket launcher is way too underpowered and you only ever get like 3 ammo for it. So there's almost never a reason to pick it up. Considering how you usually have several dozens of shotgun rounds or hunderds of assault rifle rounds, which in total are more powerful than 3 rockets, not to mention you're more likely to miss the enemy with a rocket.

I think a lot of this game's problems could be fixed by making the protagonist more agile and levels a little more open. For example, give him a sprint button (there are like 4 completely useless buttons in the game) and a jetpack with limited fuel. In fact, why not use the orange goo for jetpack fuel, making the player choose when to use it wisely. Remove the limit on aiming (in the game you can only raise your crosshair by like 75 degrees high). Extend the length of an anchor and remove all those stupid invisible walls. You don't have to make levels bigger, just give the player the ability to climb onto all the surface and make those surfaces empty, so there's not much incentive for the player to go there, and yet they'd still provide good sniping spots, as well as make the world feel realer. Speaking of sniping sections, add the ability to prone.

I feel like this is a game with tons of unrealized potential. If the aforementioned features were added, it could be a 9/10 kind of game. If the story were made better, even a 10/10 kind of game. But as it is, it's more like a 6/10 kind of game.

Also, why are there rivers? At -80 degrees, shouldn't it all be ice? If you wanna add water, why not make it orange and explain it in the lore as it being populated b smaller insects? That would make for more visual variety.

I loved this game as a kid. I played a ton of the multiplayer and I would reply the story endlessly.

Aesthetically and conceptually this game is awesome. The enemy and mech designs are super cool and the idea of trying to survive on a frozen planet battling against both the severe weather and giant alien bug monsters is a marvel. But man, the execution was terrible. Right off the bat you need to know that the story is absolute garbage. The poor writing and voice acting can be chalked up to the fact that it was translated from Japanese back in the early 2000s, but the over-all plot is painfully bad. The gameplay is boring 50% of the time, and the other 50% of the time it's frustrating because you get stun-locked into oblivion and you can't see a damn thing for several seconds after an explosion. It feels very arcade-y as opposed to survival-y and by the time I finished the incredibly short 8 hour campaign I felt dissatisfied enough to write this. The game can be summed up like this: The final boss is a flying mech battle in which you must use controls and mechanics that have not been seen anywhere else in the game to defeat an RNG-heavy boss and all the while you aren't entirely sure why you're fighting this guy in the first place.

Also, there's no option to play on the multiplayer maps versus bots or anything.

If you're looking for a nostalgia trip: Go for it. But you won't feel it's worth the money.
If you're looking to play this game for the first time: Skip it. It sucks.

Now, I'm off to see if Lost Planet 2 is any better. Edit: Nope, it's worse.

I remember getting my first xbox back in like 2008 having this game and playing the multiplayer all the time. I remember it being super fun, there were mechs with different weapons, grappling hooks, vertical maps, cool looking characters, etc. Unsurprisingly, no one plays this game anymore, so I decided to play through the singleplayer campaign.

There are so many ideas jam packed into this thing and about half of them are really bad. It's cool to have a grappling hook, but it barely goes 3 feet in front of you and you barely need to use it. The player can get spam knocked back by explosions and essentially stun locked in parts of the game, which was by far the most irritating. The boss fights are inconsistent, some bosses are stupid easy while others are harder to figure out. I felt that I was constantly getting pooped on by some of them for like 3 tries and then on the 4th try I kill them without taking like any damage. It's very odd. The story is stupid and not worth paying attention to. The warmth system is weird, as long as you have warmth at least on normal difficulty you cannot die to enemies, making you virtually invincible unless you run out.

I think this is worth playing just to see the potential of what this game could have been. I really like how the mechs work, there are different kinds that do different things better than others and you can carry around mech weapons outside of them and attach what you want to them. I thought some enemies like the snow pirates were pretty cool, and the one map with a giant worm in the middle was interesting. The whole frozen planet atmosphere was cool. And like I said previously, the multiplayer was pretty cool too. Overall its an average experience that hints at being much better than it is with certain aspects. I do remember thinking the sequel was an improvement over this one, with better bossfights, so i'll have to give it a try.

Fun game, bad story, great levels.

So, first, the gameplay is fun. From on foot to the mechs(best part), the gameplay is fast and loud thirdperson shooting done very well, and only gets louder when you hope in a mech. Had enough unique enemies to be expansive without overwhelming, Guns feel powerful enough and you'll always find the right tool for the job just around the corner, but I'll get to that in level design section. Health is usually not a problem, though you're still encouraged to not lose it cause that take mission 'time' away. Also, the ability to switch out the weapons on mechs so you can keep your favorite shotgun, even if your mechs ready to blow.

The story is bad. I'm sorry, but it really is incoherent with way too many people being introduced randomly and enough twists to give you whiplash. I spent the first, I guess, 2/3-3/4 of the game asking why we're trying to stop the bad guys, who have a rather reasonable goal, and only learn later on WHY it's evil. Ontop of that, I actually was left thinking that the weather was new, because of buildings and cars never design for intense snow being in the levels. But no, turns out it was always like that. The story was definitely taking a back seat to the gameplay and level design when it came to priority.

Which brings me to my final point. The mission/levels/ are amazing. Kenji Oguro and his guys deserve a medal or a reward. Every level will feel unique, even when they use the same map, because the enemies or challenge you face will be different. Enough to keep it entertaining, without giving you something out of left field (except for the final boss.). Side passages. Hidden useful weapons/mechs. Items being placed with purpose to help you. Enemies fighting amongst each other. Beacons pointing you where you need to go without overloading your HUD. The levels never felt boring nor a repetitive series of corridors.

The game also still looks amazing even 14 years later as I right this (the day before it's anniversary funny enough). As far as bugs, I had a few issues with voice desync, things getting stuck in the garages, and the scorpions clipping through, but it shouldn't hurt your gameplay.

It's 15 bucks (3 if you're getting it on sale) and you can beat it in less than 12 hours without feeling a grind and have fun shooting bugs in big mechs. Why not?

It's good, but not without flaws

It's a crime of me that this game flew under my radar for years until recently, this game had it all that suits my niche; a one man army situation? Mechs? A planet wasteland? Giant fucking monsters? This really had it all. If I knew about this earlier, I would've consider this as one of my favorite games I've ever played. However, this game is flawed in a way, but it didn't really impact my experience so far, until the final fucking boss that is, but we'll get to that.

le good

First impressions are very important in video games and damn did they nailed it here, this game does not waste your time in telling you what's going on and gets to the point, straightforward and simple. The weapons felt satisfying to shoot and aren't completely useless in most situations. The main feature of the game, the mechs, are awesome, they're slow, clunky and actually packs a punch, and surprisingly they're all not useless too. The grappling hook is neat.

le bad

Probably because I'm not the smartest of the bunch, but goddamn the controls in this game feels odd and janky, I guess it's because this game is originally a console game so it accommodates better with a controller, but it just doesn't feel right with me on keyboard.

The final boss, oh boy, that part of the game, I fucking despise it. The climax of the game, and it was getting really good, until it shits the bed and drops everything you've known about the game, you can suddenly fly now, and you have to suddenly figure it out yourself because the game doesn't really tell you that this is something you're going to learn throughout the game, and the goddamn boss shows you how bullshit it is, he spams homing missiles, spams fucking lasers at you, takes any opportunity to keep its distance from you because the only way for you to even damage it is that you get close and do melee damage which is awfully fucking slow for something you pilot that's considered to be one of the most advanced mechs in the story so far, all while you are both in midair with shitty clunky flying controls that the game never taught you to begin with, the climax left such a horrible taste in my mouth after finishing the game that I felt very mixed about my experience with the game.

conclusion

Overall I enjoyed the game, totally ruined by a terrible fucking final boss, but I loved throughout before reaching that part, I'd recommend getting this game if you haven't heard of it, it's not bad, just expect to be frustrated with the bullshit at the end. I'm not sure if I want to replay it, seeing how there's not much to do in this game.

Honestly... Lost Planet is one of my favorite games. It came out when I was a mere lad and I would say it still holds up today with everything set on max settings. This series just gave me so much joy as I was growing up and deeply saddens me to not see it expand further from the third release in 2013.

I've played a lot of games through my life and I can say that this one has definitely shone throughout a lot of them due to it's boldness to be different in a time where FPS' were starting to dominate over TPS'. Now it's far from perfect BUT, nevertheless the game has such great moments and scenes that stick into your mind because they are so amazing!

The BOSSES! OOOOOOOOO THE BOSSES! One of the most memorable boss fights for me was the Green Eye! Built up from your first encounter with him and being known as an unstoppable Akrid just sets the tone for the rest of the game and I LOVE IT!

Fighting giant monsters with mechs is always an amazing idea, especially when you can hope in and out of different ones with a variety of different fighting/shooting styles for each of them. My only hope for the future is that Capcom sees what an amazing game this and the second one was so that they might revive this series in the future.

So thanks for reading and I hope you might like this game as much as I did!

A highly demanding, yet well executed product with inspiring visual communication. Clearly, the vital suit models had to have been my most favorable aspect, aside from the reptilian Akrid, due to their salient graphical representations and differing functions. In the end, this is one of the few CAPCOM concoctions that I find virtually deserving of one's time and money.

A series that seriously deserves a grand comeback. An idea from capcom that had the potential to be come a sci-fi equivalent to Monster Hunter if they'd done things right. Instead they ruined it by trying to make it a copy of every other popular high selling game with Lost Planet 3 which had completely killed the soul of this series. Its a legitimately fun game that deserves some love. Is it the best game ever? no. But who can say no to fighting giant aliens with mechs?

The game has some cool gameplay mechanics, especially the mechs.
If playing normal: It will be easy.
If playing hard: The game was clearly not playtested. Visual effects from explosions will completely blind you for nearly 10 seconds, you will get stunlocked to death, you will accidentally detach/equip/punch/enter/exit things you don't want to because it's all the same button, some bosses either require heavy cheese or pure RNG to beat.

Personally if you want to know what the first Lost Planet game is like just burn through it on normal and call it a day.

Worked without issues. Glad I stumbled on this classic from when I tried Xbox 360. Their failure rate made me never trust microsoft again :/
Had two of them that failed.

Oh, suck it saber interactive! mudrunner crashes with MSI afterburner but a game from 2007 has no issues with it!

In Lost Planet, you fight on the ground and in mechs against humans, mechs, monsters and bugs on an ice planet. Lost Planet comes in two versions: the Extreme condition and the Extreme Condition Colonies Edition. The latter allows you to play multiplayer, however it comes at a great cost: windows live. If you don't care about multiplayer, you may as well take the version without windows live.

pros
+ gunplay
+ many boss fights you may not have encountered in other games before
+ short. it doesn't overstay its welcome
+ decent graphics
+ one of the better mech games if you are into mechs
+ fun

cons
- controls: forced toggle aim and m2 to go back in the main menu
- while the story and the characters kept me interested, it could have been fleshed out more to make it more memorable
- ending could have been better

Verdict

Lost Planet is short, fun and a solid game for 2006. If you like mech combat and many boss fights, I'd recommend Lost Planet.

Not sure why i picked up this game. I didnt like it as a kid, still dont like it now. But oddly enough, it has this strange nostalgia to me, seeing the giant worms as you move across the barren tundra really blew me away as a kid. Now its standard stuff but the explosion effects and the sparks were really damn cool as a launch title for the 360. The game just oozes early 360 era with trying to be massive in every way, even if it suffers in the gameplay. Im not going to not recommend it, but you are warned this game isnt very good. $15 is a bit steep but considering its capcom, it will go on sale for a couple dollars very often. Atleast this lost planet runs well compared to lost planet 2 that runs or doesnt depending on the time of day.

Lost Planet 1 is an enjoyable third person shooter which serves as a look into the past. Whilst the game was not critically acclaimed, it spawned the third person shooter/mecha hybrid trilogy of the Lost Planet series, which is still loved to this day. Whilst the game is not amazing and was not amazing by even standards of the past, playing through it again fourteen years after the initial release has been an enjoyable time, and I feel it's worth checking out for those who have never played it before.

Coming back to Lost Planet 1 fourteen years after its initial launch and my initial playthrough has been quite an experience. I remember having so much difficulty when I was younger playing the game, to the point that it actually felt like I was playing a survival game more than a 3rd-person-shooter, but I've just recently gone through it on Hard with minimal issues aside from when having to learn how to deal with a new boss. I remember now why I loved the series in the first place, and it's got me hoping for a fourth installment in the series.

Now then, I'll be rating this game based off of today's standards of gaming, and will be giving the game what I view as a fitting score for such.

For this review and others like it, feel free to check out and follow my personal Steam Curator page if you'd like! https://store.steampowered.com/curator/36761101-Miphnificent

The Good:

- Difficulties feel fine-tuned. Whilst the normal difficulty of the game definitely feels as though it's a bit of an easy affair, it feels as though it's just right for a normal difficulty, with Hard feeling like an actual slog against insurmountable odds at times. There were moments where I found myself fighting through large caverns clamoring for whatever thermal energy I could find so I could push my VS just that tiny bit further onwards, only to run out and have to fight on foot with my health bar slowly dwindling, hoping to kill the enemy before it kills me. Overall very solid, and I suggest Hard for everyone starting out.

- Good enemy variety. There's enough enemy variety in the game to never feel bored, keeping you on your toes as you round the next corner never being fully aware as to whether there's a new Akrid or VS around the corner. It makes you learn what VS's or weapons are good for which, and the game doesn't relent throughout the entire game. There's also enough unique bosses to have a decent challenge, and each one has its own unique way of being properly dispatched.

- Enough weapons and VS's to NEVER be bored. There's a vast array of weapons for both on-foot and whilst aboard a VS, and the game continues to give you new shiny toys all the way until the last level, throwing a new thing at you here and there to cut through the enemy akrid or VS's with. Almost every weapon, grenade, or VS has its own place and can be utilized for different things.

- Handles exceptionally well on M+KB. I went into this with a controller as I'd expected a game from 2006 to handle horrendously on M+KB, but honestly it handles stupendously, and I don't think I could ever go back to controller if I ever decided to play the game again. Does require a little tweaking of the controls, and sadly the popups telling you what buttons do what aren't mapped for keyboard, but you can get a general understanding quite easily.

The Ok:

- The bosses. I'd like to say they were ALL good, but I actually found myself quite frustrated with a few of them. Most of the boss encounters are really interesting and enjoyable, making you learn what best to use on them, but there are a few which are just frustrating due to spammy attacks which make it incredibly agitating to deal with them.

- The music and sound design in general. Musical score isn't exactly the best, but it isn't the worst either. I quite like a lot of the music, but sometimes it's almost nonexistent within certain levels. Regarding sound design, some things sound great but others sound merely alright, to the point that they just sound like generic iterations of whatever they're meant to portray, such as the machine gun sounding like a toy. There are things such as VS's and such however which just sound overall great in most aspects.

- Grappling Hook mechanics. Whilst not terrible, I wouldn't say they're exactly great. It's awesome that it was added into the game, however it has some issues with latching onto the right part of terrain, latching onto terrain lower than you're usually aiming at. Does allow for you to latch onto enemies and such, which allows for expansive ways to dispatch foes.

- The story. It is simply an OK storyline, and definitely has that early 2000's story feel, with it being a revenge plot and blahblahblah.

- The Characters. Whilst most of them are at least somewhat likable, the interactions they have amongst themselves are awkward at times, especially during reunions which feel like the characters are almost strangers. There's very little character progression outside of one of the supporting characters which YOU MEET HALFWAY THROUGH THE GAME. They're not exactly memorable, and if any of them are it's the protagonist and the generically named supporting character.

The Bad:

- Stunlock. This game has SO MANY INSTANCES OF STUNLOCK. Bullets, Akrid attacks, tiny pebbles, anything that's destructible. There's so much in this game which can just combo you into a string of being unable to actually move whilst you await the welcome embrace of death as you're complaining about how bullshit it is to be dragged across the map by a single attack, hitstun into losing your VS or just dying in the end.

- The final boss. Whilst I did touch on saying that some of the bosses aren't exactly the greatest, the end-boss deserves his own section as he serves to be the period upon the game, signaling that the ride is over after you've defeated him. Very poorly designed with attacks that have seemingly no rhythm, pattern, or anything as he spams attacks with no lead-up. Defeating him is an easy enough task, but it's not at all satisfying as you have to cheese combo him to death.

_
Final Score: 7.5/10

Worth $14.99? There's definitely worse games you could buy at the price of $15, but there's also better, and this game goes on sale quite often. Entirely up to you realistically, as this one's a toss up for me.

Closing Thoughts: I remember getting this game fourteen years ago on the Xbox 360, and the experience of then versus now is vastly different and improved, to the point that I feel I fully appreciate the game for what it is. Whilst it's no masterpiece by any means, I've found a new love for the game, and will probably come back to experience it again and see what I can do better.

What is Lost Planet ?

Unlike the third game which was the other lost planet game I played before this one, it put me to sleep in the first 10 minutes, this one at least I could play for 20 minutes without falling asleep which I dont know if its a good or a bad thing, on one side we have a game that is so boring it makes you sleep but as someone who have insomnia putting me to sleep should be a positive thing and on the other side the game is so boring and uninsteresting but not in such an extreme way that puts you to sleep making it utterly useless, its just boring in a way that makes you uninterested and make you uninstall the game, I have no idea why I got this trilogy on steam, talk about money throwed in the trash, maybe because it was probably a cheap bundle during a sale I could buy to increase my library size but after sitting in my library for years and finally give them a chance, I do think that in terms of gameplay LP1 was a bit more fun and energetic with even better controls than 3 but either way still boring af, the lost planet franchise is very bland, boring and generic and its good its staying where it belongs, dead and being buried under the sa.... snow!!!!

Lost planet surprised me in many ways. At the start of the game you tell yourself: Oh nice it's a game about monsters and mech thats cool! Then you get further and realise that it's becoming a platformer. And then you get to the end and you're like WHAT IS HAPPENING? Still I had plenty of fun playing it. The AI is sometimes really dumb and some other times it's like a damn terminator. Trying to get in a mech after blowing up yours is one ugly ride when you are behing surrounded by enemies that keep spamming rokets and you ragdoll everywhere. The difficulty is generally ok depending on the mission or your luck with the AI but the final boss is... wierd. You get from a relatively slow paced game to a BRAAAAH FLY EVERYWHERE JUMP AROUND AIR DOGFIGHT FTW! It's unsetteling for the least. Story is ok, graphics are pretty smooth and game runs perfectly. Although I gotta add, the innability to run is perhaps the most annoying part of the game. 7/10

Decent game to play, being able to fight on foot or inside in one of the various mechs you can find during your missions was cool, the music score is not that of a wonder but it will suffice for the atmosphere it tries to create. The story is interesting enough but feels like they could have done more work with the characters themselves and their relationships between. 7/10

i think this was one of the first ps3 games i played when ps3 was new, and inwas impressed by the graphics then....but i dont recommend this game. Its extremely basic, and didn't age well at all. The game feels like a cell phone shooter, and lacks stuff to do besides trudging through the linear generic story and genaric characters development....which there really isn't much of either

Hoth: The Video Game

This is a fun third person shooter/mecha jank. The game is not broken, but it's not the most polished either. It does feels like it could use a couple more mechanics to give more depth to the gameplay, maybe climbing mechanics a la Dragon's Dogma or Shadow of the Colossus. The grappling hook feature is neat but its utility is quite limited. The mech riding was fun. The mechs designs and features are pretty interesting. The gameplay is just okay, typical PS2 era third person shooter stuff. I sorta brute forced my way in through the game, and it took only 7 hours to beat the game on Normal difficulty, so yeah. The multiplayer online battle is dead.
The story is decent, very anime, not the most memorable.

If you're a mech fan, and you're desperate for mecha related content, check this one out on the weekend.

Good

Not the greatest game i ever played but was good enough to keep me entertained for a solid 7.8 hours
If i had played the game on hardcore mode i probably would not had beaten it so soon as the game has some stupid hard moments where it feels unfair

basically there is no recovery from knockdowns so you end up being flung around a lot like a rag doll when you get bombarded by enemies

other then that the story was good and the combat was enjoyable

i really liked the monster designs and although it was kind corny the story was good
i recommend

I really enjoyed Lost Planet 2 for PS3, and when I saw LP1-3 were on sale for a few bucks I decided to pick them all up. I heard the story for 1 was great which led me to buy it alongside LP2. I really wish I hadn't. The combat is inventive, so long as you are in a VS (robot) but god help you when you are on the ground. You can get stunlocked and killed by a mech repeatedly hitting you with missiles. Any damage stuns you, and the AI is as intelligent as a raccoon with a blindfold. Mech battles are often just you and them trading blows until you both blow up and you go look for a new suit. Don't get attached to any weapon, mech, or item. They are all gone in minutes, traded in for something else.

It was decently fun, though the bosses are a load of crap. They are too easy and not fun at all save for the bosses of stage 8 and 11. Those two bosses are like fighting a 2nd grader in a make believe game. The boss of stage 8 can 1-shot your mechs, and you get 3 total. Kill that one by making pipes roll across the stage to deal more damage than you can do in 5 minutes but then the pipe goes away. All 3 pipes won't kill him. You need the rocket launchers specifically because nothing else does damage worth note. The boss of stage 11 was like fighting a 5 year old in a swordfight. He was invincible while moving, shooting, and whenever he felt like it. He is immune to just about every projectile you can send his way, sends out a couple of long lasting homing rockets+lasers every chance he gets (which you can't shoot down because the auto-aim targeting the projectile immune boss can't be disabled), and he can also kill you in a few seconds by stunlocking you with guns. It took me 48 minutes of hell to beat him by the only viable strategy I could think of or find. I ran at him and spammed (charged) left click and hoped he didn't decide not to take no damage for no reason. Without the motive for the achievement, I would have rather slammed my head into the wall for 48 minutes instead of fighting this boss. I did however beat him, not because I wanted to, but because I simply couldn't let him get away with his *strategy* and *fair tactics*.

The story can go take a hike too because it was confusing and illogical. Basically people (military) want to terraform the frozen planet so people of earth can live there. We as pirates can't let that happen because it will kill the 1000 or so remaining starving pirates on the planet. Nevermind that I've personally blown the brains out of 300 or so and that everyone of the military is going to be safe in cryosleep until the planet is done terraforming. Lets blow up the orbital station and kill all those people so they can't terraform this wasteland into a good planet and we are the good guys btw :). In the end, it turns out (in certain areas) there isn't millennia of permafrost and instead (alien) grass has already grown beneath which we can totally use. What? Also the main character lost his memory because reasons.

Combat: 6/10
Story: 4/10
Bosses / Arenas: 2/10
Final score for this game: 4/10. I wish I had just skipped it and went to Lost Planet 2 instead.

EDF: Front Mission Knockback Edition
For the love of god, don't play it on hard

+fantastic mech combat
+Good edf combat most of the time
+Very long for such a small amount of content
+fantastic monster enemies
+fighting mechs as infantry is pretty fun sometimes
+finicky grapple hook! (can't unlock it's true potential unless you cancel your swings mid flight by hitting grapple again)
+the worst weapon in the game, the machine gun, is surprisingly good

-I heard it's too easy on normal and based on the combat, I believe it. However, with most of the challenge coming from dodging heavily telegraphed attacks, aiming at weak points, and recovering from knockback, it is not improved in anyway other then higher enemy count and is not worth playing on hard for
-they won't let you go to the previous checkpoint unless you die, the most annoying part of the fucking game
-the plasma cannon is an overpowered gun that can stunlock mechs to death. I fought 2 rocket wielding mechs at once with little problem. Hell I was able to send one of the mech bosses into a comma, and I had to with his cheap bullshit attacks. If you play on hard, abuse it, it's that bad at times
-Plenty of attacks that can stun lock you for a few minutes, extremely cheap
-Heat doesn't matter except in hard mode. With enemies being more deadly, you might get in the habit of staying out of range like a rational person. However, doing so will prevent you from collecting the much needed energy from the bigger kills
-Bull shit ass hard mode has moments of fantastic challenge and more moments that stomp you in the face with unfair garbage and stunlock
-fucking worm in level 3 kills you instantly on hard unless you hug the right side. it makes you infinitely tumble, even in a fucking vehicle, unless you hug the right wall. If you manage to dodge it's bullshit while tumbling and try to activate a beacon, well fuck you, it instantly kills you with an animation.
-the way to go forward is a little hard to see sometimes (like the white stairs in the intro, the panels in level 3 that kinda look like they indicate a cliff, a mech right next to the door but there's a brick wall that blocks your view of it, a hole in the ceiling in a game where you can't look straight up, etc)
-some animal bosses sap your energy extremely hard, I had to beat half of them on foot with a minigun and one hit KO health
-final boss is an annoying piece of shit on hard, especially during the final phase and the first phase if he refuses to exit vehicle mode
-the final mech you receive is hard to control and very weak for something supposed to be slightly overpowered. wish I could run wayne's mech for that fight :(
-bad story, but who cares? you're gonna skip it/watch it 2x faster on youtube anyway

TL:DR? See Conclusion

INTRODUCTION:

Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions is the first game on Lost Planet franchise. Developed and Published by Capcom, it was originally designed to be an Xbox 360 (2006) exclusive but was later released for the PC (2007) and subsequently, the Playstation 3 (2008).

The player takes the role of Wayne Holden, a Snow Pirate surviving in a failed colonization project of an alien world known as E.D.N. III. Said planet was a prospective new home planet for humanity until it was discovered that: 1. Its covered in perpetual winter. 2. Its home to a hostile alien species known as the Akrid. Wayne, along with his father was supposed to be hunting a particularly powerful Akrid but it proved too powerful and soon things went from bad to worst as Wayne finds himself left for dead in the frozen surface of the planet. He was later recovered and revived (with amnesia) by another group of Snow Pirates who came across his frozen body. Join Wayne in his quest to recover his memories and piece together a conspiracy by a mysterious corporation known as NEVEC.

PROS:

+ Graphically and Visually stunning despite being 8 years old at the time of writing this review (2014).
+ Vital Suits (V.S.) are fun to pilot and to play
+ Healthy amount of Variety on the above mentioned VS, each having their own strengths and weaknesses
+ Good Music and Sound Effects (although the voice acting could have used a bit more work)
+ Good enemy variety
+ Epic boss battles
+ Large enough levels for exploration however...(See CON #7)
+ Great environment, level design and refreshing new setting (abandoned frozen planet)
+ Performance Test functionality (which is proper since the game HAD a heavy system requirement back in 2007 for the PC version)

CONS:

- Voice acting could have been better (or they could have used the original Japanese with english subtitles)
- Story line is a bit hard to follow if you're not paying attention
- Not very memorable characters
- The jumps between cutscenes and missions are sometimes disconnected.
- Poor A.I. (You'll see more intelligence in a Coma patient than the Human Enemy AI in this game.)
- Repetitive combat
- Unrewarding and pointless collectibles that serve no purpose in gameplay or story. (You don't get rewarded for exploration.)

CONCLUSION:

Its a NICE game that could have been done better. I can still give it my RECOMMENDATION because I particularly liked my experience with it. It can get a boring at times, but Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions does make for a good pass time since the levels are interesting and satisfying to play through.

The visuals are great which are complemented with good music and sound effects however, the voice acting is tolerable at best. The combat gets too repetitive at times and the human enemy AI is woefully underwhelming but the fun and excitement found when using the Vital Suits does make up for it.

All in all, its an AVERAGE game. RECOMMENDED to be bought on a SALE rather than full price.
