Über das Spiel

9 Years of Shadows is a side-scrolling Metroidvania by Halberd Studios. Travel alongside Europa, a brave warrior determined to enter the mechanical giant Talos and stop the corruption within before it swallows the world in darkness. Battle through tainted creatures, meet charismatic musicians and uncover the truth behind the curse that robbed the land of all color.

Many have tried to venture inside the twisted depths of Talos, a dormant fortress where several civilizations have settle over centuries. And, after losing everything she held dear, Europa has nothing holding her back from attempting what others could not achieve. As a noble fighter who refuses to be bound by the curse, she must enter the castle, find the source of corruption, and return the color once and for all.

This adventure is not for Europa to face alone. Inside the giant, she befriends Apino, a cute floating bear who seems to possess magical abilities that can restore color and replenish the health of his allies. He is also able to shield his companions from the multiple dangers that roam Talos’ hallways.

While exploring the castle, Apino can cleanse the corruption around Talos and shoot a variety of projectiles that can destroy dark crystals and inflict damage:
  • A fist that punches upwards when conjured.
  • A blast that travels along a surface until colission
  • A cyclone that returns to Apino like a boomerang.

Use the elements to your advantage to travel the map dynamically. Acquire the elemental armors that were once treasures to ancient civilizations and change on the fly and unlock special abilities to traverse your way: from swimming against waterfalls to traveling underground tunnels or gliding through warm air currents.

Harness the power of lightning, water, earth, and fire. Surprise bosses while you switch armors, perform strong halberd combos, and exploit your foes’ weaknesses to pave your way through the heart of the shadows.

Music is all but the soul of the game. Revitalize the world while you listen to a moving soundtrack composed by Miguel Hasson, as well as soothing pieces scored in 432hz by celebrated composers Michiru Yamane (Castlevania series) and Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid series). Meet these guest composers as in-game NPCs who aid in Europa’s quest throughout the game.

Music is the binding thread that combines gameplay and storytelling: collect musical notes and perform a healing lullaby to restore your health.

9 years of shadow is somewhat decent, but ultimaltely not a very good metroidvania. I do not regret playing it once, but not going to replay it in future.
Your heroine explores different parts of a big castle, battling monsters and collecting stuff along the way. Each area has its own theme (fire,water,poison,etc…) and the corresponding power-up that allows you to solve the puzzles in that area and continue your journey. End of the area is usually a boss fight. Also each wing has a few optional bosses.

PROS:

+ very good visual style and general aesthetics. Sprites, portraits, locations, background illustrations and so on are all vibrant and top-notch;
+ layout of the castle is decent, the locations do not feel samey;
+ couple of interesting boss fights (mb 2-3 for the entire game);

CONS:

- enemy variety is not great, a lot of reskinned monsters;
- difficulty is insultingly low, you will steamroll like 90% of the game. Srsly, most boss fight (with a few exceptions) you will win with 1-2 tries, regular enemies are literal trash; No option to change difficulty either (even after you complete the game);
- traversal is…annoying. The castle is big and you got basically only one way to fast travel – the big central elevator with a few stops. Everything else is you running by foot, with gets really old very fast;
- upgrades are meh. Just small numerical increases, nothing fancy. The plot-related powers are also kinda uninspired, ive used only the basic hit attack all game;
- the game is rather short for a metroidvania. I did a 100% items run in like 7h

TL;DR

A game you might want to play if you are starving for a new metroidvania, but nothing really fancy besides the looks. Gameplay gets boring pretty fast.

Target Audience: Players who want a contained yet strong experience

Summary:

Look, I get it. Games for many are hard to drop a bunch of money on for some players out there if you don't get a lot of hours out of it. It's a valid criteria, but I always have to point out that quality of those hours are important. We've seen games that have stretched out their content so far that the slightest of pressure will cause it to snap. Well, 9 Years of Shadow is the opposite of that, and quite frankly, was fantastic for the time that I've played so far.

Obviously, you're probably here for the visuals and presentation, which are absolutely gorgeous. The game shows a variety of environmental designs along with fun characters that let's you appreciate the small details on each of them, without getting lost in the big picture of functional gameplay. I love the weaving of elements into each character and how you can tell who they are just by looking at them. In addition, the game emphasizes key moments well with beautifully constructed screens: like those that you get when getting a new armor. The music may be a slight step down compared to the overall visuals, but that's like saying the great fries are a step down from the big juicy burger next to it: it does more to complement the visuals more then anything.

The gameplay is up my alley to: a focus on basic positioning and simple attack/defense strategies in metroidvanias. The element system does enough to change encounter, and the movement options that are introduced (especially the water siren form) really feel fantastic and just wants to make you move around. There's ok enemy variety but great boss encounters, and the game hits the level of pushing you into situations that will get you tense, but not to the point of frustration. Exploration is easy yet can get you confused at times, but you'll want to keep exploring this world as much as possible.

Look, the biggest knock against this game right now is the length based on other reviews, but the impression it leaves from a gameplay perspective does a lot to justify it's cost. If that's important to you, then keep an eye out for it in the future at least, but for others, this is a great example of a polished indie game that you'll be thinking for days to come, and just want to see what the world has to unveil next.

Lists:
Positives:
  • Some of the strongest art direction and visual flair that I've seen to date: very powerful yet functional in designs from all aspects (character, level, hell even UI).
  • Seriously, the UI in particular is a prime example of how to make it functional WITHOUT making it boring.
  • Environmental and level design has good variety and emphasizes combat and movement options in good ways.
  • Hug Mechanic feels just right in rewarding smart gameplay decisions, but still leaving room to get into trouble.
  • Boss battles are great skill checks that have tension yet still make you feel like any attempt could easily be the one.

Negatives:
  • If length is important to you, this will be a negative in terms of overall hours to completition.
  • Honestly, a lot of what I could bring up are super, super nitpicks. The game's too solid all around.
  • Would love to see some options in accessibility/other areas (I do wonder how colorblind players would deal with the element system).

It seems like the game has a memory leak problem. Many people are reporting crashes, I watched in task manager and the game easily goes into using 2GB+ of memory and then still growing further.

The game suddenly closes without any known reason, which happens frequently, and the game does not have an auto-save feature and there is no ability to skip boss cutscenes. This means that you have to watch the boss cutscenes every time you have to re-fight them.
Wait until dev fixed the issue.

I can just say that this game is amazing! The gameplay is outstanding, the controls are simple and give the player a sensation of power and versatility, it’s clearly an example of “less is (much) more.

The cutscenes are beautiful and remind me of beloved childhood characters, yet they are fresh and innovative. I’m not a big fan of metroidvanias, but 9 years of shadows, doesn’t seem to keep you backtracking and it keeps driving the story forward.

I’d recommend this game anytime!

dropping this review early to counteract the myriad storm of haters. this game, like many other indie games, is being devalued by snobs. same thing happened with souldiers. i would go out on a limb and say this game falls between 8.3-9.3 on a 1-10 review scale. we'll see if i still feel the same by the end. but u can tell some of these steam reviewers just run through the games as quickly as possible, being grateful for none of the experience, and then desparately pump out an overly negative review. this game is cheaper and better than moonscars and tarnishing easily. F the haters.

The game is good, but extremely easy, and possibly short. And loading times are an issue too. I returned it and will wait for a more mature and polished patched version.
