It's certainly got it's own style but it's a walking simulator with jazz noir aesthetic and very simple puzzles, it's just a bit dull the story isn't particularly well told or signalled what is going on, really can't recommend it.

It took time to find words for why I didnt take to this game as much as hoped - Its clearly a game made with heart, with a unique style, by a dedicated team. Sure it had bugs:
- Your character sometimes gets stuck in scenery & you have to restart
- Scenes sometimes break... & you have to restart
- The character cant walk on clearly visible floor spaces
- Mouse control during puzzles or walking feels like wrestling snakes into pretzel shapes

But they didnt take long to fix. It was a collection of smaller issues:
- The game has few words but when it does have them, it gives long hyper-scientific paragraphs laced with pseudo-importance
- Miss Mass's role in the game is to look sexy, get nude, and get shot, and the devs are so proud of the scene where she gets nude this will be replayed multiple times
- The latter half gets dragged down by slow by-the-book puzzle minigames, where the plot has meandered to the point you've likely disengaged

In the briefest summary - Was the game interesting? Yeah, kinda. Was it fun? Nah.

An audiovisual masterpiece too pretentious for its own good.

Genesis Noir is a bold psychedelic journey into metaphysics and the creation of our known universe through incredible visual storytelling and, at times, metaphors too convoluted for their own sake.

You play as a detective named No Man who represents time itself. Our protagonist gets caught in a fatal love affair between T H I C C Miss Mass and Golden Boy -- one that represents some theoretical quarrels of their own.

As you may have guessed, tackling such complex subjects requires readers or gamers to be somewhat in the know of some basic concepts. Therefore, one should be very careful with conveying these concepts to the regular audience rather than acting like the biggest and most pretentious douchebag there is. While the game developers tried to implement exposition of sorts between chapters, their efforts failed flat as they did the exact opposite by smearing the scientifically written diarrhoea all over their players' faces.

Gameplay is merely a gimmick that would make you believe you are not playing a visual novel you would otherwise finish in two or three hours at best.

All of this wouldn't have been a problem if the game was true to itself and just admitted it had impeccable visuals and audio that would work with a mediocre story. Instead, keeping to its premise of visual storytelling, it dug its own grave and covered itself in the pile of rubbish it produced along the way of it wanting to be 200+ IQ.

I am aware my delivery may come as harsh, but it will hopefully shed some light on the hard fact that audio and visuals can not be the only reason for a game to be considered outstanding and bold. As per the words of our Lord and Saviour Yahtzee:

Zitat:
Have you ever tried pressing on your eyelids? If some pretty shapes and colours really can sell the experience for you, then you might save a little money in the future if you just sat on your couch pressing on your eyelids.

Well that was...different.

This is very much art, so it's bound to be divisive and I'm having a hard time rating it. Things kinda went off the rails near the end with some fourth plateau, peace and love, psychedelic weirdness that was jarringly off-theme and that I absolutely hated...I almost want to give this a thumbs down for that but the rest of it was pretty neat and I enjoyed it up to that point.

I was expecting a noir detective story that cleverly intertwined a digestible depiction of the birth, life and death of the universe. Instead I got a confusing mishmash of abstraction that mocked my inability to find meaning in it.

The audiovisual experience is indeed a treat to behold. But pretty colours can only keep one entertained for so long. Maybe try some edibles before you play.

Lets start with some negatives:
It's not much of a game. Has some terrible optimisation in the last section which grinds game-play almost to a halt. Clicked on the wrong bit of background once and got soft-locked. Had to redo some stuff and then the extremely slow game-play becomes annoying. Sometimes it's not super clear what you can click on.

Here is what I enjoyed:
I really liked the music and the visual spectacle of it all, has some really cool transitions and effects.

As a whole it's not terrible, it's just annoyingly slow paced instead of relaxing slow paced. This might not be worth your time.

This game is pure art! The visuals are stunning, the story and concept one of a kind.
In the middle of the game, there was a section where I did not find the gameplay too engaging and I had to push through it. But I am glad I did so, it was worth it.
I encountered some minor bugs. But I would say it is worth your money and time.
I would give it 8.5/10

Beautiful, interactive story-based game that takes you from the Big Bang all the way to the Big Crunch. I absolutely loved the visual art and the soundtrack. The tiny little worlds that you travel to as a part of your journey towards the Big Crunch are well-made, with many different smaller puzzles and narratives within them. You meet four different characters that add to your story (and your inventory), each with their own backstory where you help, in some way that you can. Also, choice-based endings that no one told me about!

The controls could have been better though. The larger story too, about Miss Mass and the Golden Boy, went a bit over my head. Some of the metaphorical brilliance was lost on me overall, which was disappointing.

What a lovely little experience that really committed to everything it was going for. I disagree with other reviews that say it would work better as a non-interactive movie - the interaction adds to it wonderfully. There were only a couple of times I got stuck and had to look up solutions (and one time it crashed near the beginning of the game).

A fantastic aesthetic and several lovely segments of story that combine into an overall wonder.

Is it a game? I'm not qualified to decide that. But it was deeply enjoyable, and that's what matters.

This interactive art book is interesting- sometimes. Like most indie art games it doesn't really seem like it was made to be fun, or to tell you a story. It's more interested in experience. This is totally fine, but these things always come off incredibly pretentious and in that I always get annoyed. Also, steam erased my review as I was writing it and that was annoying too so I'll probably now come off more annoyed than I originally was. Oh well.
I don't remember everything I said before. I think the main thing to know is that this is not really a video game. Sure, it barely passes for one, but there is really no true mechanics beyond clicking on things. You click on things, and something happens, then you click on a lot more times and other stuff happens. Sometimes you're not even sure what you're supposed to do. Because the game, like most indie games, doesn't really have any ideas beyond abstraction. Because apparently all indie games have to be abstract and you need to figure out what anything is.
So, there is a story, but not really. I have really turned a corner on this concept. It's garbage, and indie games should stop doing it. It's not ever good to do. Because indie game developers aren't good at doing it. Ever. I've never played any video game or interactive media that did this well.
There is a lot of simplistic art in the game. Of the cave painting variety. You see what the art is like on the games poster. It does at times have really cool looking visuals (like the aforementioned poster's) and sometimes it's not particularly great. I wouldn't say the art itself is bad. It's fine, but given that this is not really a game, and it's super pretentious, the art struggles to be the reason to play this- which I think is a shame. Because for the most part I really liked the look of the game (at least until it tries to be 2001 a Space Odyssey).
The music in this piece of interaction is really good (arguably it's the best part of the package). Sometimes the sound and music even mingles with the interaction making interactive noise, and those moments are pleasant as well. But again even with it being as good as it is you would be struggling to say that is the reason to play the game at all. It's not music you haven't heard before, or couldn't hear otherwise, and it isn't used in a way that is mind blowing. So, I do love the music and sound design, but it's not a reason to recommend interacting with this either.
Overall, I would not recommend this interactive media that I refuse to call a game because it's mostly pretentious, abstract and boring- like 95% of all indie games. I would, however, recommend it if you are sick, depressed, or bored and need noise and sights to just kind of happen in front of you with little interaction needed. It was good for that (as I write this I am recovering from COVID). On top, of that it's very short so it won't last more than a day so it's perfect if you're on a sick day and video games are too much right now.
I was disappointed in it overall. I wanted it to be more story than it really is, but if you don't mind that either go ahead and check it out. It has moments of interesting visuals, and lots of great music and sound design, but sadly overall it is less than the sum of it's parts.
I wouldn't recommend this to most.

PROS:
+Art style, the use of limited colors and even full color usage in one section is plain genius. Last time I saw this was in Sayonara wild hearts.

+Presentation and execution is top notch and very creative. The use of camera movement and paralax effect is very alluring.

+Music is also one of the highlights, it's crisp and clear. Jazz music is pretty groovy.

+Technical aspect is also good, it felt very optimised. The playable interactions mechanical aspects are good fun to interact with.

CONS:
-No checkpoints in levels, you gotta restart level if you leave it in between. They are not that big, so it's just a hindrance.

P/S:
I can say that not many people will like it who are into action and game play only. This game is like an experience. So a bit patience and laid back attitude is needed. Story continuity will feel drifting away from the point like what is even happening. And at one point you'll feel like it's overstaying it's presence. But it's a worthy experience to have, really liked the visuals it provided.

I really wanted to like this game. The art was beautiful and I really wanted to like the idea of it. But this isn't a game. So this is my first ever review.
Honestly speaking, its not a game, Its an Art. Everyone will have a different understanding and interpretation of this as a whole.
Gameplay wise if you are looking for some good intutive gameplay, this is not for you.
Narrative wise if you like some narrative where you like to untangle and find hidden narrative then yes this is your kind of game.
Visual wise its for everyone. Kudos to the artists and animators, it just beautiful.
And yes finally, don't expect anything before starting this game. This game is not what you think it is. Just go for it with a clean slate.
Embrace this with an open heart.

It begins very promisingly, a well-drawn noir detective story (in a curious way) is a story about the birth of the universe. The setting seem promising: the gunsot is a big bang that and is directed at the bar dancer who is Mass in general - physical mass. It seems that the continuation could be a metaphoric journey to the philosophical principles of life, perception and time. But very soon the game drowns in technicalities, new-agey post-humanism and beautiful pictures for the sake of beautiful pictures. The super-hyped optimism at the end is an annoying choral song, repeated over and over again. It has no any connection to current reflection of the state of things or even things-that-could-be. It is just dead and still reproduction of sci-fi constructs and quotes by the poorly understood modern thinkers.

A completely unique experience. With striking visuals and a fascinating concept. It tells the story of a noir detective trying to prevent a murder whilst also charting the creation and destruction of the universe. At points there isn't much in the way of game play, but if you sit back and let the game take you on its wild journey I promise you it's worth it.

Genesis Noir did not become one of my favorite games this year; I actually didn't enjoy playing a lot of it. I can, however, say it is the most unique game I've played in years, perhaps second only to 2020's Paradise Killer. Some might call it an exercise in frustration, and others may call it an exercise in discovery. It's different, and that gives me hope for future indie games to feel just a bit better about risking it all going weird. Without devs dreaming big and building weird, we wouldn't have masterworks like Undertale, The Stanley Parable, or Sayonara Wild Hearts.

So, first several minutes it seems to be like a real detective quest. But next it doesn't. And the difference become bigger and bigger at every stage. The end is really bad. What a duck I've just played???? Truly said, you just need to sit and press some buttons without any thinking, very stupid. It is not a detective quest, really, only beautiful picture and sound with popping a bubbles.

I really enjoy the art and the format. The puzzles are clever, and not difficult to figure out. But I'd like it a lot better if it saved after every puzzle, or even every second puzzle. I finished five, and had to get off for the night. Next day when I picked it up, it put me right back at the beginning puzzle. I have not begun again for a few days because of this.

I recommend this experience, but I wouldn't call it a game. Your actions are mostly just there to progress the game along a narrative which you have no control over until the very end. A few professional reviews I've read compare it to an arthouse installation and I have to agree. That being said, the visuals, the music the conceptual depth and complex narrative all make this well worth experiencing. It doesn't all necessarily make sense in a logical way but even when you have no idea what it all means you realize that's kind of the point. It's the grandest mystery of all, cast as a film noir and the grandest of historical epic sweeps. There's physics, biology, anthropology, Jungian archetypes and spiritual musings and of course there's jazz which makes it something you can leave on, walk away and do your dishes or grab a snack and come back to without losing atmosphere.

Genesis Noire, or, How We Fell in Love with Time

Can't reccomend this absolute gem enough. Might be a bit too abstract for some, but between the stunning sound design and soundtrack, extremely focused and consistent artistic presentation and great narrative it truly is a thoroughly unique game.
There is one section in the game that risked teetering on the edge of pretentiousness but after some consideration it was justifiable in context so try to keep an open mind when you eventually get there.

Torn on this one, it's beautifully crafted, technically and visually excellent, if you're already sold on the aesthetic alone, go for it.

It plays like warioware with a story, but sadly the story only makes as much sense as warioware anyway.

It asks a lot of you to take in what's going on and to try and extract the narrative as you play, very little makes any cohesive sense at first but after a while the absurdity kind of settles and I thought I had a loose grasp on what we were actually doing!

Then that got thrown out the window and the last 30-60 minutes of gameplay I just kind of wanted it to end, there was still a lot going on visually but I was completely ejected from the story. A real shame, so much work went into this and it's really impressive to see in motion, but it was like listening to someone trying to explain and analyse their own fever dream from the previous night, while drunk.

Having completed Genesis Noir, I'm not sure how to describe the experience. It is a unique mix of visuals, music, poetry, philosophy, and Big Bang theory. You interact in terms of clicking or moving characters. The biggest challenge is trying to figure out what is required to advance each scene.

The game is split into 12 chapters which have common themes and characters but are very different. Some are super short and others feel like they take forever. Some had obvious ties to the idea of the Big Bang, while others felt like unrelated interludes. At the end of each chapter, you circle back to a central screen with a telescope/cannon (used to select the next chapter) and a display area with collectibles. There is no inventory and the main character pockets items of interest and automatically places them when appropriate. Most of the game is done with black and white line drawings, using gold to accent. Other sections pull in bright colors and feel as if you are looking through a kaleidoscope. The sound track is a mix of jazz, vocals, occasional voice overs, and environmental sounds.

Achievements are earned at the end of each chapter and there are two alternate endings which can be experienced by selecting 'Continue' after the ending scene (only a minor amount of replay is required). A chapter menu becomes available after completion which allows you to pick up any experiences you might have skipped on your first play through. While most chapters are hard to miss, I was able to accidentally skip two chapters and moved right to the ending.

As the game stands today, there are no save points within chapters so I have some AFK time to avoid restarting a chapter after taking a break. The developers have indicated that save points will be added in the future.

If you are looking for a traditional game or one with a cohesive narrative, then Genesis Noir is probably not your cup of tea. If you enjoy participating in an artistic experience that is surreal and non-linear, then I would recommend it. It is well done and obviously took a lot of creative thought. I can't remember playing anything quite like it before and the phrase 'one of a kind' comes to mind.

Genesis Noir

Genesis Noir looks and sounds wonderful, with original and innovative ideas, but the story is confusing and the gameplay is lackluster in places.

You play as No Man, a watch peddler caught in a love triangle with a jazz singer called Miss Mass and Golden Boy. When your affair turns into a bitter confrontation, you will witness a gunshot fired by a jealous god—otherwise known as The Big Bang.

Jump into pockets of time, explore moments throughout the lifespan of the universe, and search for a way to change the course of destiny.

Zitat:
It’s difficult to put Genesis Noir into words. It feels like it is a hybrid between a bizarre space opera and a Raymond Chandler inspired detective mystery. There. I hope that explains it.

If you are interested in weird, original and flamboyant games then this certainly ticks all the boxes. The stunning visuals, art work and screenplay are enough for admission alone, but the story may leave you perplexed and the gameplay is minimal.

Story ????

To be honest, I had to look at the store page to get an idea of what the story was about.

It is obvious that the game revolves around time and space and details the big bang theory in surprising detail. It chronicles the start of time, as we know it, and shows key events through the history of man. It even touches upon our impending doom and subsequent exodus into the stars in search of other planets to ruin.

Other than that, the story revolves around a love triangle which is difficult to fathom but would probably make sense if it was explained.

It is one of those stories that seems open to interpretation but behind it you suspect there is some logic lost in the weird time and space continuum. The truth is out there.

There are fourteen chapters to enjoy and before each chapter we are presented with an interesting synopsis detailing an astronomical phenomenon. How a star is born, what a singularity is etc. It’s quite interesting stuff. The chapter revolves around the theme and the gameplay supports it.

The game takes around six hours to complete and it’s easy to gain all the achievements.

Gameplay????️

https://youtu.be/NVChYLcJgg0

It is kind of a walking simulator with light puzzle elements.

Often, there will be a short cutscene at the beginning of the chapter and then you are thrown into the mix to experiment on all the things that are on the screen. Using your left mouse button pressing everything to see what it does is often a good way of approaching things. This is how the story is driven.

Most of the time, this is all that is required but occasionally there are some puzzles thrown in for good measure. The puzzles are generally easy to figure out but there is one particularly difficult puzzle which seems out of place and will be challenging.

Overall Impressions????

Genesis Noir mirrors and tries to quantify the chaos that is the start of the Universe. The game successfully portrays this through its own mix of weird, unique and bizarre events alongside an offbeat jazz inspired soundtrack.

It screams at you and forces you to pay attention although you’re never quite sure what is happening and you’re never allowed to put your hand up and ask.

Gameplay is varied enough and never becomes boring although certain chapters are more entertaining than others. There is a nice mix of walking sim type spectacular visuals and music followed by a few light puzzle elements. It often feels like you are watching a time travelling musical extravaganza.

When the game started, I thought there were going to be some detective style elements in the game but these never materialized, which was a shame. Most of the time it felt like an interactive visual novel, using your mouse to turn objects, throw things and generally manipulating objects on offer. Instead of text however, the visuals and music told the story.

The puzzles were mostly easy and offered a quick way of progressing the story but one section was abnormally difficult and completely ran against the grain. It was an odd design choice considering everything before and after it was so accommodating.

The love story is bizarre and didn’t make much sense to me at the time. After reading the store page however, it made more sense so I would recommend having a quick peak at the synopsis which will certainly help you decipher their romance.

The rest of the story is comprehensible and also educational, even if it is presented in a completely eccentric manner.

Graphics ????

The art style is original and distinguished. It feels astronomical with it’s black and white façade but manages to retain an impressive look and keep to its noir origins.

The art direction is also notable with some really interesting shots and artwork which look astounding.

Sound ????

Genesis Noir certainly feels like you’ve stepped into a jazz club in the 1930s. Saxophone, cello and trumpet accompanies a chaotic jazz beat. There are scenes that would rival opera and most of the game feels like you are in the audience at a concert.

There is no voice acting.

Conclusion????

Zitat:
Genesis Noir is the most original game I have played so far this year. I guarantee you won’t have played many games like this before.

It is a very casual game with minimal interaction so I would suggest this will appeal to visual novel and walking sim fans mostly.

It manages to entertain for the duration, mostly through the visual and audible treats on offer and the pure absurdness of the adventure.

Definitely pick it up on sale.

Genesis Noir is quite a strange and scintillating adventure, featuring a time-traveling being trying to reverse the Big Bang. Aside from a few sporadic puzzles, everything is linear and just keeps moving. Otherwise, it's really not much of a game, as there is very little that you have to do other than follow along the preset path and click on a few items of interest as the game moves forward in its artistic and musical exhibitions.

If anything, the game is a pretty good exploration into the origins of the universe as theorized by the Big Bang and some accompanying fun ideas. For me it was a pretty fun cursory review without diving into anything deep. And it was made abstract to throw somewhat of a story into it all, to add the elements of a higher being. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience.

Positives

1. The abstract art to piece together the events at the beginning of the universe into a story is quite well done and rather fun to look at throughout the game.
2. The jazz music is full of energy and rather fun to listen to throughout the game.
3. There's enough additional information for people who are interested in a bit of basic astrophysics knowledge without diving so deep to make it too difficult to read.
4. This game is just so odd, that everything that got distorted and made abstract seems to fit well together overall.
5. Overall very enjoyable experience.

Negatives

1. I would love to see a few extra save slots and manual saving. I am of the understanding that manual saves would not be easy to implement. Planning to put in a few more checkpoints would be good. I ended up losing a lot of progress in a couple of areas when I could not continue the game.
2. There are some bugs that I encountered, and one that crashed the game and I had to restart my computer to restart. Hopefully these get discovered and fixed.
3. Some areas of rapidly changing displayed lights and colors, especially in the 2nd half of the game. It could potentially give some people motion sickness.

Gameplay

There are a few random puzzles strewn across mostly a linear story told wordlessly except for between chapters at checkpoints. You run around in some areas in a top-down 2D zone, while other times it's a linear left and right movement to progress. A lot of areas you just need to click on the few items of interest to see a few associated animated sequences and the game would just move forward.

The puzzles were overall rather easy to figure out. Everything was quite simple except for one continuous series of puzzles in the middle of the game, in what looks like a particle accelerator in an advanced physics lab. You will know when you get there. Once you figure out where the clues are for these puzzles, they become a lot easier too.

Controls

You can use a controller (left joystick + single face button), a mouse only, or a mouse and keyboard combination to play. Some sections I felt were easier with the mouse, other parts I preferred a controller. I ended up switching between the two throughout the game.

Graphics

Simplistic and abstract art mostly and relatively monotonous in color throughout until a later part of the game where there some bright color explosions led to an increase in color. The artwork is very well done for this game, definitely unique and fun to look at.

Music

The music has a heavy jazz focus and is really nice to listen to. I had a great time listening to the sounds of the game while playing.

Pricing

I think the game's content and artistic and musical values make it overall worth the $14.99 price tag. But for people who want to get the most time out of your money, please keep in mind that this game is only about 4 hours long if played beginning to end. I have some extra time for initially losing progress from quitting middle of some chapters and then later on just keeping the game on so that I wouldn't have to worry about checkpoints, even if I walked away for other things.

Beginning of Game Video

I recorded the beginning as I played for the first time, if anyone is interested:

Conclusion

Genesis Noir is an enjoyable ride through the museum of space and time, told through a unique perspective and featuring higher beings as well as the basic science behind the Big Bang. If you decide to dive in, you will be looking at the oddities and passively playing the game for a greater chunk of the game.

This game is definitely not for everyone, but the people who enjoy it will do so a great deal.

Score 8/10

Marking this as a recommend, but it's a hesitant one at that.

TL;DR - It's unique in it's style, but has enough minor issues that held me back enjoying it fully

The pros:

The game oozes style. The visuals are genuinely stunning, and they run away with themselves in a great way. The setting is very cool, and the combination of jazz, noir and astro physics is melded together surprisingly well.

The cons:

I was genuinely bored with a large segment of the gameplay, and it's not because I don't enjoy slow games. The progression feels stilted, and the puzzles, few and far between as they are, didn't exactly tax the mind. The second to last act, which has you
looking at 12 different timelines while just holding forward
, was a genuine slog. While the story says a lot, I finished thinking it had basically said nothing of genuine depth. A final minor gripe is that I got soft locked in one section
after clicking all the lotuses, the cut scene didn't start, but it wasn't clear there was meant to be one so I spent a good few minutes just clicking around to see if I'd missed something
