Ich liebe dieses Spiel.
Wunderschöne Landschaften, knifflige Rätsel - Ohne Papier, Stift und eine menge Kopfzerbrechen, hat man hier keine Chance, durchzukommen. - und eine interessante Geschichte. Was will man mehr?

RIVEN is so hard to sell in 2022, which is simply a tragedy because this game is one of the most complex, subtle, thematic, and intelligent adventure games I've ever played. And I mean that not only in the mechanical sense, but also in regards to the story, which deserves a tremendous amount of praise for its mature ideas about what can happen when paternalistic society, feminism, religion, and father + son relationships cross in the worst way possible. RIVEN is a subtle but dramatic powerhouse, and its title should be your first (though by no means last) clue to that.

So, why is RIVEN hard to recommend? Let's start with the simple and obvious: the game's presentation, which was once one of its greater selling points, now makes the game look like a 100-year-old black & white photo album. That is to say, quaintly curious at best, and mind-numbing at worst. Add to this, the subtler problem of the game's pacing: Riven's puzzles are relentlessly logical and diegetic, meaning they are all firmly grounded in the story and mystery of the game. Unfortunately, this also means that they are often hard to uncover, and, once solved, it is not really clear how they tie in to the rest of the puzzles across the island. Finally, there are usually many different goals and avenues that can be pursued throughout the game, which makes it hard to tell when you are making real progress and when you are just beating sand. When in these situations, your only real reprieve is to dive into large swaths of backstory that the game imparts on you at a few key parts of the game. This essentially means that it is up to you to drip-feed yourself story content and motivation to make it through the more challenging portions of the game.

These problems feature heavily in my overall view of RIVEN today. Make no mistake: this game holds the profound distinction of being one of the very few video game stories I have ever played whose themes have left a deep and abiding impression on my adult self, while also being a game that has aged incredibly poorly, and which I struggle to place in a landscape filled with games that are far more successful at blending their (admittedly more limited) stories with action potential.

It breaks my heart that I haven't found a way to sell anyone on this game in my entire life. But I do have hope for the future: the Starry Expanse project, which has been plugging away for years to remake this game in Unreal Engine 5, has not only made tremendous headway towards renewing the game for modern audiences, but has even received official blessings from Cyan (the original developer). Evidently I'm not the only one who appreciates this game and believes that its dated mechanics and presentation have done it very little justice in the modern age. RIVEN deserves to be enjoyed and admired by anyone who takes video game writing even remotely seriously. Try it!

(No spoilers here) Finally, after over 24 years, I decided to play (again) this fantastic adventure game. I remembered back in 97, 98, I began playing but lost interest after getting frustrated with the lack of progress. I hate spoilers, they take away from the sense of accomplishment and leaves you with a sense of emptiness and regret; I could have simply bought a clue book and solve the puzzles, but I preferred to put it away until I felt ready to play again. This time, with a clear state of mind, I decided to take on the challenge again. I had little to no recollection of the puzzles, places, or objects that I saw back in the year of the game's original release. Now, instead of clicking and moving fast, I decided to take my time, read everything, and observe closely, essentially live the game.

Riven is a solitary game; it is about you figuring out the environment and history by exploration and interaction. I have played and completed Myst (I), Exile (III) and Revelations (IV) and I can certainly say that I find Riven to be the more challenging, although still very fair in the design and logic of the puzzles. Riven does not require you to be familiarized with Myst, however, exposure to Myst will give you a sort of atmospheric idea of what you could probably encounter in Riven. Riven has everything you need to solve the puzzles within the game, there's no need to look elsewhere, but be advised that you probably won't be able to solve the puzzles without getting immersed in the story.

I'm very pleased to have finally completed this adventure on my own. Looking back, I'm a bit impressed at how I was able to figure out some of the puzzles; I admit I over-analyzed some of them and I wasted ridiculous amounts of time searching for what later I found were red-herrings, that's why some note taking will go a long way towards connecting all the dots to complete the game a bit quicker.

If you are an impatient person that needs constant rewarding, then this game may not be for you. If you love to observe, analyze, and patiently put together clues to solve a mystery, then this adventure may be more to your liking.

one of the most incredible gaming/puzzle experiences ive had. truly a gem of its time. it does not have multiplayer so what me and my friend did was screenshare together in discord and only play at the same time, we'd go off and work on seperate puzzles while helping eachother. HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING A NOTEBOOK. all in all it took us about 10 hours. very very fun and if you enjoy puzzle games undoubtedly a must have.

Bar none the greatest strength of the Myst series was always its ability to convey the human mind's fascination with deciphering the unknown and making sense out of the alien and illogical. Myst's cold, empty and artifical island filled with misplaced familiarity beckoning you to interact with its clunky buttons and mechanical contraptions was all about finding meaning in its dreamlike language, which while a fruitful and inspiring endeavor as the series first step, was something that its sequel Riven managed to slightly iterate and expand upon to deliver something much more profoundly alluring.

Masterfully intertwining its worldbuilding with its puzzles, Riven presents a cohesive and tangible world filled with enigmas within enigmas, where understanding the solution means understanding the people, culture, rules and symbols that govern its world, and preceeding titles like The Witness or Fez, it offers a singular idea to the player that progresssively and beautifully flourishes into revelation with each new discovery of its meaning, exposing its crucial purpose and importance to every facet of Riven's existence.

A meticulously designed gameworld that perfectly parallels the antagonist's obssessive imperialistic dreams of divinity and supremacy over the world of Riven, and whose vision is ultimately and inevitably undone by the same reverence he bestows upon the devices and symbols he created in his tyranny. And just as his unsustainable dream crumbles apart, so too does the player's, as figuring out Riven means the destruction of its mystique, and while the awe of enlightenment is something that I will never be able to experience ever again in Riven, the joyful smile I get while looking at my notebook filled with scribbles and doodles of its world is proof that I was truly there.

Refrain from resorting to a guide, click anything and everything, close and open every door, observe closely, and take a sip each time you have to endure a grueling slow animation, and I promise it will be worthwhile.

Fun game. I had played this on a mac so many years ago, I actually forgot a whole lot about it. The graphics were not all that bad some 20+ years later, but they are dated for those who want ultra-realism in their games. Just keep that in mind. This is more about the story and adventure (and puzzle thinking), than ooo aaa graphics. Oddly though back in the day, it WAS also all about the ooo aaa graphics given the hardware we used to run! HAHA.

Anyways, great game. Nice story continuation, and everything.

Superb! Still holds up after all these years. It's difficult, REALLY difficult but fair and if I dare say simple at the same time. It's a game that rewards the player who observes and listens to the world arounds him. Personally, I find Riven a step above the original Myst. At the same time, it's a game that like Myst could never be created today where players require constant gratification and immediate reward. It requires patience.

It's a shame that there's no masterpiece edition with high definition visuals.

This game can be extremely frustrating and I almost gave this game a negative review, but my opinion got turned around enough, that I can cautiosly recommend this game.
Lets start with the negatives:
First off their is a problem with navigating the in-game world. Its absolutely gigantic and has hundreds of screens to visit, often even with multiple angles. But only a small amount actually contain puzzles and interactables, which themselves are often cryptic. This makes moving between them a hassle as many of the screens are just filler from one location to the next and also often leaves you aimless as your unsure what is actually relevant.
Worse yet, the devil is in the details. Many progress-critical things or nooks are often well-hidden or easily missable. But 95% of the time you try to be thorough, while searching a screen, you will find nothing relevant because its serves as filler. This makes the search for actual important details frustrating and will often cause you to become stuck.
Let me actually give some examples:
1.While leaving an area, there is a double door, that can be closed, to reveal hidden passage ways
2.Vehicles turn around before moving, turning the door with them;
usually you arent given the option to leave this door, even if you see a walkway,
but in one case it allowy you to leave the other side
3.A lever raising a staircase, but the lever just looks like the end of a railing
4.At one point you have to slowly move through multiple screens to sneak up to some animals;
Your reward? You cant interact with them, but get to hear the sound they make, which in fact is supposed to
be an important clue
The result of all this is, that a lot of the time youll be aimlessly wandering around thinking you have to solve a puzzle, when in reality you just missed a banal detail on a some screen of a hundred.
And this is all beside the very difficult major puzzles the game gives you.
So my initial experience was very negative and looking up walkthroughs didnt help my opinion, as they initially only gave solutions without context and explanations.
However what turned around my view, was well written walkthrough which gave lots of context for in-world and instead of writing out solutions, they first gave hints on how to solve the puzzle yourself before revealing the solutions.
I seriously think you need a walkthrough to enjoy this game, as its otherwise to frustrating when you get stuck. The walkthrough I used was from https://www.angelfire.com/ri/Riven5/it.html
Now for some positives:
While the major puzzles are seriously obfuscated, actually solving them can be quite satisfying as it involves learning and understanding much of the worlds rules.
For example: I found a tool, which allowed me to figure out the worlds math system and how our numbers correlate to theirs.
The game itself is also very beautiful with its pre-rendered backgrounds.

I can recommend this game with the assistance of a well-written walkthrough.

TLDR: Vastly superior to the original Myst, Riven still holds pretty well as a puzzle adventure game if you’re up for a challenge. [19/20]

Although it grew on me over the years, I was never really a fan of Myst, which explains why I never got around to play any of its sequels. I realize now that that was a misjudgement, because even though Myst was seminal in this style of puzzle adventure games, Riven is vastly superior.

Although the gameplay is similar to Myst - point-and-click navigation through pre-rendered scenarios, with live action cutscenes - the visuals are hugely improved. In fact, it has aged better than most 3D graphics games from 1997 (not that I don’t find low-poly models charming, mind you). The soundtrack and effects are also much more polished.

Although the mechanics of the puzzles themselves is similar to that of Myst, they are much harder in Riven. This is because, although Myst was non-linear in general, puzzles were mostly self-contained within a certain Age/island. That’s not the case in Riven, as puzzles from different island are interdependent, meaning that clues to a puzzle may be spread throughout the game world. Which, personally, makes for a more interesting, and challenging, experience (if you’re familiar with more recent puzzle adventures, you may have faced this level of puzzle solving in The Witness or Fez). What I actually find more annoying is the pixel hunting for buttons and levers (
or those doors cruelly hidden behind opened doors
), which provide me little puzzle solving satisfaction.

As for the plot, it builds on the one of Myst, providing more details on the characters and the mechanics behind “the Art” (although I’m not sure universes such as this one benefit from very detailed explanations, it’s difficult to maintain the internal consistency both for the authors of the game and the authors of the Ages).

I picked up this game after having it recommended to me by a certain Irish reviewer. The game seemed intriguing, so I thought I'd give it a go.

For the first few hours, I enjoyed exploring the islands, learning the number system, and slowly increasing my understanding of some of the lore and culture of Riven. Around three or so hours in, I hit a brick wall, and couldn't find anything else to do. After another two hours of searching, I gave up and looked at a walk-through for this one step.

I was annoyed by how easy to miss the path forward was, and equally annoyed at myself for caving in. Perhaps this was the early warning sign that I should have dipped right there. But I kept playing, and kept hitting brick walls. I would search for an hour or so, then give up again. Towards the end, I just left the walk-through open so I could tab to it whenever I got stuck.

Admittedly, by using a walk-through I did ruin the game for myself. I reckon that I could have beaten the game without a walk-through - though I also think it would have taken me an age; each brick wall that I got stuck at had a solution that had me questioning if the developers were pulling some kind of practical joke.

I continued to slog through, still enjoying those occasional moments when the solutions were difficult (but not obtuse) to figure out. The death blow to my play-through came after the animal carving room, when I finally entered the correct password, and was given two books to read.

The first one took me 45 minutes to read thanks to the near illegible cursive writing and just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I read the second one. It put me into a cut-scene, then cut to the (unskippable) credits, and booted me back to the main menu, with not so much as an auto-save. I hadn't been saving often, as Riven didn't have any 'lose-able' situations (ie. combat) before this.

Though it probably would not have taken me too long to get back, this was the straw that broke the camels back. The highly interesting setting and the enjoyment derived from the furthering of my understanding of the Riven culture was not enough to offset the frustration induced by the often obtuse puzzle design and the specificity required for many of the clues. These two negative factors additionally resulted in my use of a walk-through, which severely reduced my enjoyment - after I broke that first barrier and cheated once, there was little moral incentive to stop me from doing it again.

Maybe at some point I'll come back to Riven again and my thoughts will change and mature, but I can promise that it's not going to he happening anytime soon.

To briefly surmise if you don't feel like reading my own Riven-length novella - I wanted to love the game, but was unable due to the frustrating puzzle design.

Just finished this for the first time after playing the new Myst remake. This is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The word that first comes to mind is 'elegant'. Every single element of this game has something to do with the story or gameplay puzzles, every minute detail; nothing is wasted. The more thought you expend on it the more rewarding it becomes. The logical consistency of the world-building, puzzles and everything else is airtight; I can only imagine how hard this game was to design just on a conceptual level. I'm so happy that I discovered an old classic, but depressed at the same time because games this smart don't get made anymore (or ever?). Buy this game. Just don't... lose your marbles. heh

The original Myst is always going to have a special place in my heart, but speaking objectively Riven takes everything to a whole other level in terms of worldbuilding, puzzle design, art direction, and storytelling. It's definitely a challenge but the journey and destination are both well worth the effort.

This version of the game runs using ScummVM which means it should run just fine on modern systems, albeit with some letterboxing.

The best job of world-building I've seen before or since. Unlike MYST, where some of the puzzles were arbitrary -- you just had to put together two disconnected pieces of information -- in Riven, most of the puzzles make physical sense. From examining the environment, you can build a coherent mental model of how everything is working. The D'ni numbering system is pure genius. I still don't quite know how we figured it out, but ... I have rarely felt such a strong sense of achievement. Haven't quite finished the game as I type this. Almost don't want to keep playing because I don't want the experience to be over.

Dive deep into the world of Riven if you want to experience a challenging adventure game with an engaging story and phenomenal graphics and OST. In my opinion, it's way better than Myst, it's both darker/more ominous and more beautiful. I've been playing this game since it came out back in the 90s and I keep coming back to it, even just to spend some time wandering around the various islands.

I don't know what it is about this game, but it is truly my own private hell! What started out as a very intriguing and appealing puzzle game has turned into a lifelong quest. This game has eluded me for over 23 years and I am still stuck in the same place I was back in 1999. I have spent so much time on this game that I am now in too deep to give in to a guide or a hint or anything that will finally solve this riddle, except my own discovery. I have notebooks of notes I have written to myself.

I originally got the game on the five CDS back in 1997 and then upgraded to the DVD in 1998 and then have purchased it again on PS1. Got so frustrated that I threw the discs away and then repurchased them in a cycle that has repeated at least five times. Buy, play, become consumed, go mad, swear the game off, destroy the discs, wait a couple of years, try again, repeat. I have gotten married, raised four kids, earned three college degrees, spent over 20 years in education. Started a philosophy program at my school and earned the nickname the 'Human Google'. Can't solve Riven.

Ah, the fates are cruel! I guess I am dumb as dirt after all. But I will die before I look at a hint at this point. I am far too committed at this point to my stubborn refusal to accept help. It probably is the tiniest thing that I somehow keep overlooking or I have permanently blinded myself due to my emotional investment over the decades! So here I am again, eight hours in for my latest iteration and I am EXACTLY where I was back in 1999.

So yeah, I would recommend it. What else you going to do with your life?

A refinement of Myst's excellence, and overall a fitting sequel to the best point-and-click of all time (and damn hard without resorting to pixel hunts or lucasarts logic, too; though many of the puzzles can be brute forced if you really feel like it). While Riven hasn't gotten all the bells and whistles that accompany modern iterations of Myst, at the very least the game runs well enough to be playable. This version runs in ScummVM and is very stable, though artifacting in many of the FMV segments isn't the prettiest thing. This IS a game released in 1997 and it looks the part - 15fps cutscenes and probably around 240p - but it doesn't detract from the experience too much.

This game is the absolute furthest possible example of what it wants to be and is trying to be. If you want a seriously difficult puzzle game set in an alien world that requires independent thought on a level no other games are even trying to reach, play Riven. My only reccomendations are to use pen and paper to note down everything you can, including maps, and to close doors after yourself.

Great game, highly recommend it. I played this when it first came out, and it baffled me then - I had to use a guide to complete it. This time I forced myself to figure it out (with some old memories helping too) and made it through to the end without looking anything up - much more satisfying. I urge people to play it like this and it doing so it becomes even more of an immersive experience. I seem to remember the graphics being better than this; I'm playing on a Mac and I think the emulator is fixed at something like 640x480. Having said that it doesn't really detract from the game, but it would be nice to know if the emulator (scummvs or something like that) could be pushed to render at a higher resolution. This is the only quibble - for its time, Riven like its predecessor Myst was totally groundbreaking and gorgeously designed. The puzzles in this game are at the hard end of the scale for sure, but that what makes the game so engaging.

Oh, Myst and Riven, two great 90's dreamlike graphic adventures, two great gems. I played both as a teenager, and although I loved them I must confess that I did not finish either. What puzzling and twisted puzzles !!! Still, it was a pleasure to play. I bought this out of nostalgia. Let's see if now with 25 years more than I have, I can finish it, although I will have to resort to a guide ... but only when my brain is satured!!!!
It was a great game then, and it still is today.

An incredible puzzle game with just a couple rough spots that could be easy to miss and end up frustrating the player. Played this for the first time recently and I was surprised at how well the game holds up after 23 years. Probably one of my favorite puzzle games I've played. (Also, it ran fine with no complications)

Sequel to Myst. I never finished it when it first came out. I recall something like 5 CDs and swapping them out every time I went to another area was painful. Nice to finally be able to play it seamlessly. Good, solid adventure.

Sequel to the classic point and click game Myst. I don't think it's as good as the first game but it's still a fine adventure game, alien setting is still on point and puzzles are harder because they are not small contained stuff all the time. If you liked Myst you'll like this one.

I had not played Riven since it was originally released. As part of the Myst anniversary Kickstarter, I received keys for all the Myst games and am now circling through them. I'd forgotten how beautiful, complex, and challenging this game was. It is so much bigger and harder than Myst!

There is a vast and diverse world to explore and more of the Myst story is revealed. There is no 'right order' to accomplish things and no penalties for making mistakes (except perhaps at the very end). Kudos to Cyan for the explicit Save feature which really came in handy for a quick return to prior areas where I had missed information.

What a journey! One I would highly recommend to anyone who's never experienced it or to an adventurer who has not made a recent visit to Riven. The technology is a bit dated but the game is absolutely brilliant. And, yes, I admit, I did finally peek at a walk-through on several occasions when the mechanics got the better of me!

OK, so this is coming from a player who loved Myst and Obduction. This game is not worth the effort. It is glitchy and the puzzles are not logical and it is almost impossible to play without outside help. I tried to get through this game years ago and could not get passed the impossible puzzles and the feeling of not knowing what to do next. I decided to give it another shot and realized again very shortly that this game is just not as good. If this is the type of game you like, save your time and money and just get Obduction or Myst. They are made by the same people but game play is much easier.

I was so thrilled to find this game here. I played it over 20 years ago, and have never found another game since that gave me that level of immersion. I remembered basic concepts, so the puzzles were a bit easier to solve this time around. If you are new to this game though, get ready to be challenged! Observe everything, take notes, keep looking around and press on everything.
The graphical quality is not the best, and the gameplay is literally going through pictures. But turn down the lights of the room you are in, make sure you have a decent speaker set connected, and get sucked into this world.

By far my favorite video game. It is just perfect. All the details in the narrative as well as in the environment are just amazing.

Atmospheric, complex and engaging. If you like stylistic puzzle games, I don't think you can go wrong here. A modern day equivalent would be The Room, an app that I think owes a lot to Myst and Riven. You may want to try Myst first to get a taste. The old school style may drive some of you young'uns crazy; but I'm old, so I like it because it reminds me of my youth.

Pros.:
- Masterfully created world and the script.
- The characters and the attention to details.
- Music and sound design.
- Endings.

Cons.:
- Some puzzles seem too hard.

In general, it's just the perfect game of its time!

A classic, and still very challenging. I had zero trouble running it on my windows 10 PC so the reviews saying there are compatibility issues must be older. In my opinion if you are a fan of the franchise this game is definitely worth it.

Riven is a much better game than Myst. With environments much more real and creative, The puzzles are much more thought-provoking and creative. They are not difficult but challenging (until you get to end game *cough* *cough* fire marble *cough* *cough*)
My big problem with this game is the ridiculous ways to progress. I will not spoil anything, but there was a big door and there were two pathways behind the open door. Another being an overhead pipe that you can go through, and a locked door that you can go under. Then again, that was to my annoyance because it wasn't a clever puzzle, but bad game design. However, besides this inconvenience Riven is a good game, even though the graphics are a bit out of date, it is still a creative work.

This might be my favorite game in the Myst series. Riven has a more in depth story than the original Myst, and a bigger world to explore. As with all Myst games, there will be some light reading to fully enjoy the story of the game. The sound design of Riven, BLOWS MY MIND. Make sure you play with noise cancelling headphones if possible, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

It's something to explore and get lost in initially. Many guides would suggest you treat yourself as though you were there. Pay attention to the sounds and what different things do when you interact with stuff there. Read everything. It isn't a game to try and speed through, unless you've the ability to put things together quickly. Overall, I like it for the atmosphere and the world in general.

A true classic. I played it on and off when it was fairly new, ages ago at the incredible year of seven. It was not until now, many years later that I finally managed to finish it.

Want to buy the series one at a time and enjoy them. i tried the online, just kept getting error after downloading. I recommend this. Do pay attention to the numbers and symbols, keep a tablet and pencil close. You have to solve it, you don't just auto collect! This is one of the best pc games. You wont regret buying it, then you will want to buy more!

Runs fantastically now it's in the ScummVM ecosystem.

If you have a deep need for a Powerpoint presentation which is more beautiful, engaging and challenging than any game released in the last 20 years, this is for you.

As far back as my memory goes, I think Riven was the very first game I picked up. My parents had finished Myst at their friends house the previous year and bought Riven for themselves. I later found out that they used to plan dinners with another group of family friends, eat dinner, and then slide in the Riven CD-ROM to play till 11 at night. It’s how I personally experienced the game when I revisited it 10 or so years later.
Riven I think holds up as one of my top 5 games of all time, primarily for nostalgia, but also because its large-scale puzzle is fantastic. It’s the primary reason I think I enjoy a good puzzle game, such as Obra Dinn, or The Witness. Riven I feel like could be compared to the Dark Knight, you can play it without knowing about Myst or the sequels that came after it, and still enjoy it. Popular belief would most likely say that it’s required to play Myst first, which I agree with and disagree with.
If you’re into large scale puzzles this is a good game. If you like puzzles that really force you to look around, listen, and think hard, this is a good game to play. If you really like Golden Beatles, and lots of stucco, and lots of ocean horizons, then this game is the game for you.

I would like to mention that, yes, the resolution is way lower than your typical game. But I think when playing, you have to keep in my mind that this was produced for computers with smaller resolutions. Look at this game from an innovative perspective for it’s time. This game is no Doom, but it did come from a studio that did make Myst, which was in a way a sort of Doom. Cyan Studios I guess has always tried to push the boundaries in video game emersion through sound, realism, and world building. If you view the game through that lenses, then you’ll enjoy it more. The resolution or any other “old game” gimmicks will fall into their respectful places. It’s the same approach I take when examining old Medieval art.
I’ll even take it a step further. Riven is a good case study to examine how people back then used to approach games. They bought games because they knew they were smart and could solve hard problems. Majora’s Mask, another top five of mine, is the same thing. Both games are full of puzzles and game play that force you to think.
If the game isn’t working on your computer, look up ways to fix the problem! Maybe in a way that’s the first puzzle for you to solve, because believe me, the puzzles of Riven will stretch your brain. You think people are joking when they recommend getting some pencil and paper?

The great sequel to a legendary game, Riven follows up on Myst's cliffhanger ending to finally reveal what need Atrus has for you. A grand rescue mission of sorts with high stakes: No less than sealing away a madman and rescuing an entire people and Atrus's wife! The puzzles are as crafty as always, and the acting pretty good. Nice to see more actors here, the world of Riven feels much more alive and full than Myst did.

IMPORTANT: If Riven is crashing for you, make sure to do the following:

1. Start the game
2. Alt+tab out and open up the Task Manager
3. Under the 'Processes' tab, find Riven and right click it
4. Select 'Go to details' on the right click menu
5. Right click Riven again
6. Select 'Set affinity'
7. Set it to run on only one core by unchecking all of the boxes except for one

This should solve the problem of it crashing after a few minutes of play, but you will have to do this every time you start up the game.

Besides that, there's not much else to say. Riven is a great game, there's a reason it's considered a classic.
