The Longest Journey is a beautifully crafted point and click game, with great story, characters, puzzles (except that one rubber duck puzzle, whoever made that can go to hell), all existing within a creative world that mixes sci-fi and fantasy.

I actually played Dreamfall: The Longest Journey before playing TLJ, so I wanted to come back to see what I missed as far as story goes. It's definitely worth playing if you want to have more insight and know the backstory of the sequels. There are neat little references to characters and places in TLJ that I didn't fully appreciate before.

With this said, its a point and click adventure story from 2000. The humor and animations are pretty funny and I think you will like it if you enjoy the nostalgia of classic games. It does get a bit tedious after a while when you have to travel between locations and watch the walking animation. Sometimes you will get stuck wondering how to progress, and there is often a certain order you need to complete actions in.

Overall, I really liked the story, Crow is one of my favorite video game characters.

I was really impressed with The Longest Journey. It was a great experience. Naturally the graphics will feel dated for some players but the voice acting is really high-quality. The cast of characters is great, the puzzles are pretty medium. For me the difficulty level was perfect, it is always clear what the next objective is. The game does a good job of giving the player cues as to what is important, what needs to happen next, etc. So in this way the games design was really well made. There was a good combination of humor and drama that I also really enjoyed. The only downside is that it's quite a long and time-consuming game without that much action which can turn some players down.

All and all it's one of the greatest point & click adventure experiences out there.

Classic and excellent point and click game that will make you live quite the adventure and will make you want to play the whole trilogy.
Also includes a whole cast of well-written and well-acted characters!

I've finished the game 3 or 4 times (either as a standalone or because I wanted to replay the entire trilogy), so needless to say that I love both this game and the trilogy. It has a lot of charm and personality.

The Longest Journey is a classic linear story game, with animations that were amazing upon release, and remain beautifully artistic today. This is a game that I enjoyed when it first was released, and am enjoying once again, many years later.

The selling point is the story, with a large amount of lore. Some of the characters are generic stereotypes, but overall, the characters are enjoyable to interact with. There are some eye rolling moments and dialogue, but the main story is overall enjoyable and worth the journey.

This game has beautiful music. The relaxing music is relaxing and fits the game moods as the story progresses, even when things get suspenseful.

Game play is very simple, but also frustrating at times. You can go long periods of time looking for something that you missed, and you cannot progress until you find that random missing thing, including required retracing your steps multiple times. Check the journal, and this will help you through those moments. There are guides online now, but I did not have those back then, and the journal helped me enough to get past all of those moments.

The humor in the game is hit or miss, but for me, mostly hit. I get a kick out of the silly antics, and find them witty and laughable. One of my friends does not find them funny like myself, and gave up watching me play this one. To each their own, I suppose. Something to keep in mind if you plan on streaming the game, else, have at it and have fun.

I recommend The Longest Journey for those that enjoy story driven linear games, with simple game mechanics and a lot of reading. This is an excellent game to relax and enjoy while playing, and finding hidden things and dialogue that can be for a good laugh. I would rate this a feel good game.

Replayed this game for the first time in years, absolutely love it. It's got a fantastic story, and it's easy to lose yourself in the atmosphere of the cyperpunk world of Newport, and the fantasy world of Arcadia. Love that the character keeps a diary as well, it's easy to connect with the protagonist. A really long game as well! In a word, a classic.

What a classic - Probably my favorite point&click adventure game. Played it back when it came out and it's been amazing to revisit it with the HD version from here (don't let my time-played fool you - residualVM doesn't add steam-playtime for the HD version in the link - but this will keep you busy a while )

Anyway - the game is old, and looks it (even in the HD version) but the story is top-notch ...
Highly recommend

The best game in the whole world in all my years of playing, but honestly I'm kinda prefering the sequels tho many ppl would say the opposite;

I do have love in my heart for all 3 of them, at first I really didn't like that they changed the voice actress for Zoe from the second (dreamfall: the longest journey) to the 3rd (in which they changed her in Dreamfall chapters) but I did get used to the new voice actress in her own right,
it was a really good story, I could pick pieces apart of how I would rather see the story go and REALLY disappointed there wasn't ANY Benrime (the Inn keeper except referencing her) in the 3rd instalment, also disappointed on the April situation in the 3rd (mostly non existent) but that may be to do with Sarah Hamilton's illness and I hope things improve for her I am understanding of coarse.

So if you have never played any of these game before you could prob start with any of them tho you might get a bit confused with the 3rd and it's characters if you didn't play the previous two,

I would say IT'S FrEAKING AMAZING and EVERYONE should try it.
If you don't like slow stories prob skip the first one and play the next two games, then go back to the first one lol :D
I think falling in love with the characters and the story is what gets you hooked and the BEAUTIFUL scenery. It's just a gorgeous gorgeous game. and 20 years later you will still think of it, and prob play it all again.

I used to be so much into this kind of point and click adventure games when I was younger, and I am baffled I didn't even know this existed until recently! I played Dreamfall Chapters first and liked it a lot despite not being able to fully understand some parts of the the plot, but even then, I already knew I had to experience both the previous games for myself. Playing The Longest Journey filled me in on that part of lore I was missing, and made me enjoy it so much more. While this game is a bit on the older side, it's actually a lot of fun. Yes, the graphics are dated as expected, but the game itself is still such a little treat. It's a classic, an old style point and click with both sci-fi and fantasy settings, whose storyline has nothing to envy to more recent videogames. It's slow but well written, the many puzzles can feel challenging at times but after some thinking and walking back and forth, turns out they are never too hard or too easy, but just right. One of the best assets is certainly the characters, they are interesting, smart and humorous, and add a lot to the already existing charm of the game. I found it surprisingly stable for a game this old and never gave me issues, it always ran smoothly and never crashed. Some models are a bit glitchy and show up partially see-through, but really, that's more funny than problematic. Don't let the release date discourage you, it's a great game.

It's clunky, it's slow, it traps you in long animations and info dumps, requires lots of fiddling to make it run properly, and it is one of my most favourite games of all time.
TLJ is something you don't see anymore; an epic adventure, with two fleshed out worlds, multitudes of backgrounds and complex characters.
TLJ lets its characters be flawed, be crude, be assholes, and still be lovable and someone you care about. April as a main character is unique in herself, in her growth, in her background and her willingness to throw away her life to save the world.

Few games deserve a funded remaster to introduce it to a new audience as TLJ.

And it's the only game I'd ever play in Norwegian, the norwegian dub is amazing (I have the dvd version and can overwrite the steam version to get norwegian voices).

Even graphics that are very old now is not that hard to stomach and it gives of nostalgic feelings.I was interested in this game for quite some time and seeing promotion on steam and that it was so cheap i had no choice but to buy it. The Longest Journey seems like an interesting game but it is not performing well on my WIndows 10. The game will not close unless I shut down my computer or try many times to open task manager to close it. The interaction between the point and click sometimes works and sometimes not. I have uninstalled it and will try reinstalling to see if the corruption issues resolve. I have gone online to resolve the issues but all I can find is very technical information that is over my head.

So, I played Dreamfall Chapters about two years ago, give or take and loved it so much. Then I found out about the whole series and just had to grab this one, so I could start from the beginning. For a 90s game, it's not bad lol, despite the graphics, but what can you do?? Though, it's quite literally the Longest Journey but is a nice game to relax to. This game has a special place in my heart!

I have always wanted to play this game when i was a kid, but this game was so rare, that I kind of gave up finding it, until I was browsing in Steam with a coincidental bumping into this game! 2020, and here I am playing a classic 1998 game! Even better it came with a bundle set for a good price value, so I had to buy it. Amazing story line!

First off, I wanted to mention that if you want to use the updated graphics mod, make sure you do install it BEFORE playing the game. I made the mistake of progressing about halfway through until I decided I wanted the mod, only to have all my save files deleted so I had to play from scratch. Honestly, at first it was kind of frustrating but I really love the story and playing it all in one go was really rewarding.

Now on to the actual game review: The Longest Journey is actually the first point and click game I've played beginning to end. The story is amazing, and the main protagonist who you play as. April Ryan, is one of the best characters I think I've ever played. She's sarcastic, and funny, and offers great commentary throughout the game which is so refreshing imo. I will say that the graphics are pretty old, and sometimes it's hard to look at in certain FMVs. but I think for the time it was really good so I don't think it's fair to judge a 20 year old game based on looks - but I digress. Everyone in the game is so well thought of an fleshed out and felt really organic, like I always loved to learn more about everyone and always wanted to exhaust all the dialogue options. I will say though that the puzzles are pretty illogical, funny, but illogical so it can be pretty difficult without a guide.

All in all though, I really love this game, and I related so much to April Ryan, that I immediately want to play the sequels to continue the journey to find out the rest of the story! I definitely plan on playing the game again in the future.

Avoid: too many graphic problems and bugs on Windows 10 that need to be solved before playing.

- When exiting the game, the confirmation dialogue is blank (so you will use task manager to terminate the game)
- but no native option to run windowed
- Anti-Aliasing does not work in native fullscreen
- Game only runs at resolution at 640x480 (whether fullscreen or windowed)
- if using compatibility mode to force a windowed mode the game window cannot be moved or manipulated, and there are no fixes for this issue
- flickering objects ingame that do not get solved with compatibility mode

Though the future world depected in the game seems ironically antiquated, The Longest Journey is still brilliant. Especially, the protagonist's courageous yet cynical attitude gives great charm to the game. The graphic is old, certainly. There are some embarassing moments, of course. Some chapters are too long, yet some are too short. But the game's fine wits haven't be withered. Magical world of Arcadia is still fantastic, and all characters have their own personalities. You'll be soon absorbed in April's journey. If you are brave enough to listen seemingly endless dialogues, The Longest Journey is worth trying.

I think this game was not given enough credit. I started this series with Dreamfall The Longest Journey then came back to this one. The story and character development is very engaging and it kept me wanting to play more. Even though it is older, I think it is still enjoyable to play now. The old graphics make for some good laughs at times which I don't think is a downside. I really like this game.

I would kill for a remaster of this game to be released for PC. This is one of those adventure games that sticks with you long after the credits roll. Being a girl who enjoys single-player games, the idea of a female protagonist has always appealed to me. Many games have tried this over the years, and most end up with an overly vanilla perfect heroine, or a very unlikable protagonist who ends up just being rude to everyone. April Ryan is one of those rare female protagonists that doesn't feel intentionally flawed as a gimmick (ala Jessica Jones), but just feels...human. By far, the most relatable female protagonist I've come across in a game.

The best part of TLJ is hidden in the huge troves of optional dialogue. Every character April encounters is interesting, to the point where you'll want to exhaust your conversation choices just to hear more. So much world-building is accomplished through optional dialogue. Nothing feels like an exposition dump. The main plot is already fleshed out, and you can get even more detail if you want. April's diary is another way to learn more about the world and about April herself without her needing to say anything. Perfect. The voice acting is good to even very good. Crow and Klacks are still laugh out loud funny after multiple playthroughs.

Graphically...yikes, this game admittedly doesn't look good. It's not the developer's fault. I can count the polygons on some of the models. Oh well.

Gameplay-wise, in the late 90s adventure games were inventory-driven. It was just the style of the time. Some of the inventory combinations are absolutely hilarious. A highlight is putting a toy monkey and several other props in such a way that the shadow of the contraption looks like a cop. Classic. When I was stuck, I was guilty of just clicking random inventory objects to see if they could be used in some weird way for whatever my goal was. Towards the end of the game, some of the puzzles get a little too obtuse, but overall the gameplay is good and has held up well. I like being able to skip the animation of April running across the screen.

Speaking of screens, there are tons of screens for April to explore, and lots of interactive objects that she can comment on. She's got a lot to say, but none of it feels forced, which again just speaks to Funcom and Tornquist's attention to detail.

Overall this is one of the best adventure games of all time. Please remaster it so it looks like Dreamfall Chapters, a much prettier but not as good game.

Hard to review this one, because The Longest Journey may have been superb game back when it came out, but nowadays it stays behind in every way.

Maybe it´s because I played it for the first time now. But still, I generally like adventure games (even older ones), so my complaints are because of the game itself, not the genre. Every aspect of The Longest Journey is too clunky. It´s clunky so much that I couldn´t get used to it even after 7 hours. Eventually I got bored, because nothing kept me hooked.

Summary

An atmospheric classic point and click adventure with a sense of wonder and endearment that time has not dimmed. The story of a young woman trying to find her way in a bleak futuristic world. April Ryan soon discovers that her technology filled universe is mirrored by one of magic and intrigue just beyond the veil, and that her fate is at the heart of momentous events she could never have imagined.

What is this game?

The Longest Journey is a point and click adventure in the most classic sense, with item use, puzzle solving, and exploration utilized to tell a deeply personal character driven story in a rich cyberpunk-meets-sorcery world.

A note on the beautiful world building and memorable characters

The Longest Journey is a cherished memory for me, like many others. But even today, with the benefit of age, hindsight, and much broader gaming experience and standards, the sense of place, reality, and detail in this game's world(s) remain compelling all these years later.

From the city streets and police filled zones that feel like something straight out of 90s cyberpunk cinema (Robocop, Judge Dread, and the like,) to the bustling markets of another decidedly less techno-centric world filled with mystery and a certain beloved talking crow, April's journey takes her to memorable locales oozing with atmosphere and character. Especially for its time, this is a fantastic feat of world building in an otherwise simple point and click adventure. No wonder so many of us fell in love with it upon its release back in the day.

Who is this game for?

  • First and foremost, anyone looking for a great yarn of a story filled with memorable places and characters. If you're like me, you may remember them for years to come. They just don't make them like this anymore in my opinion.
  • Anyone who enjoys classic point and click adventures, puzzle solving, and item use experimentation when figuring out how to progress.
  • Anyone who enjoys the cyberpunk meets magic vibes of its dual worlds.
  • Anyone who finds the friendship between a young woman on a grand adventure and a sardonic but lovable talking crow endearing.

Who is this game not for?

  • Anyone who dislikes classic point and click game design.
  • Anyone who abhors slow, methodical gameplay.
  • Anyone who thinks this premise, world, or story doesn't suit their tastes.
  • Anyone who needs full 3D control and movement to enjoy a game.

PROS:

  • A true classic which, despite being a success and garnering a following, is honestly probably still underappreciated and deserves to be revisited today.
  • Despite its age, other than visually, it's still surprisingly intuitive and playable. Which I believe speaks to competent design at the time of its creation. The menus are a tad outdated and fiddly, but everything still makes sense and works, which I can't say for most games of its era today.
  • Fairly logical puzzle design. Not a lot of those annoying solutions that make zero sense that many point and click adventures suffer from. And no clicking every pixel on screen to hunt for interactivity. Everything is fairly straightforward as long as you pay attention.
  • Never annoying, but just challenging enough to be satisfying when you manage to progress events or gain access to a new area.
  • Truly memorable, beloved characters that have stayed with me for longer than most games' protagonists ever have or will.
  • Atmospheric, believable worlds, supported by gorgeous art and good sound design.

CONS:

  • Showing its age visually.
  • Occasional opaque puzzles here and there, but nothing frustrating or illogical as mentioned above. You just have to think and experiment.
  • Becoming emotionally invested in these characters, only for them to be largely supplanted by a new protagonist in the next game, and then... well .... I can't say more than that here. You'll find out if you play the next two games, which I also highly recommend. (Provided you go in knowing they are substantial departures, both mechanically and narratively. While still containing many of the strengths and, especially, the atmospheric richness, of this original beloved classic.)

Conclusion

If you're at all a fan of the point and click genre, and particularly if you want a story and memorable world you can get lost in for a while, you owe it to yourself to play The Longest Journey if you still haven't.

Such a long story but the ending makes it so worth it, and how it leads into Dreamfall, than onto Dreamfall Chapters. Great trilogy to play through.

Pros.:
- Story. It's absolutely fantastic and advanced for that time. It is almost the same level of story telling as in the Blade Runner from Westwood.
- Unlike many other things, I appreciated diversity here. The setting was encouraging it. And made more gigs for the gameplay.
- Music. Absolutely stunning. Dragon is among my favorites now.
- When you play you can FEEL the flow of time, the passion of the developers. It's magic itself. Magic of those great games created in the '90s.

Cons.:
- As usual with the adventure games closer to the end it's becoming too simple;
- Graphics are out of date and not updated in Steam. There are fan packs with texture updates and so on. But still nothing changed. Pity;
- There is a crash coming to the police station. Still not fixed;
- The font crash after quitting the game and font disappearance after alt+tab.

Minor cons. Game is 10/10.

This is my favourite point and click adventure of all time! This is my third full playthrough. The first two were in Dutch. Amazing that 20 years ago they fully translated this huge game with great voice acting and subtitles. However, this version in English is indeed better: April is amazing!! The jokes are better and it is one of the best stories ever. I can fully recommend everyone to at least play this game once.

I had played Dreamfall: The Longest Journey before this, so my expectations for this were pretty high. And honestly, I have to say I loved it. Obviously, the graphics are dated, as is the game, but the story is impactful and interesting to this day.
It's a point-and-click game, and a lot of strategy and critical thinking are required to make combinations for things that will help you on your very long journey. All in all, I'd absolutely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys fantasy stories. There is a lot of wonderful humor all along the way, which lightens some of the harder hitting aspects of the story.

One thing I hadn't expected when starting this game was the inclusivity. For a game from 2000, it beats out a lot of games newer than it for that. And what makes it so incredible is how casually it brings up these subjects. Games these days seem to beat you over the head with how inclusive they are, but this one just places the information where it can be easily seen without rubbing your nose in it.

Lastly, the ending comes with a price, and I always appreciate a game where the stakes are high and the reality of losing the people or characters you care for is very real. I really liked this game.

A plucky and creative adventure. It felt whimsical. All characters are fully voiced. Quite a convoluted mix of plot elements to make this a meaty Journey.

It's a really old game, so I had to use dgVoodoo2 to get it running at a resolution that I didn't need a microscope to play the game.
Other than that: I've been a longtime fan of the Monkey Island/Grim Fandango/Sam & Max games, and since this was on sale I figured what the heck.
Now the animations are... let's say... dated. To be kind. But the story is well written, and I had some genuine laugh out loud moments. The voice acting is well done, and the puzzles are (mostly) intuitive for a sane human being to figure out without needing to mash every inventory item you have against every object in the game world.

Honestly, this is my favorite game. And I'm barely going to write anything about it.

There's just something about the atmosphere. Every moment of playing this is a precious memory.

(Except for not figuring out how to fast-walk at the beginning ohmyLORDTHEHOURSIWASTED--).

Still hoping they'll release the very end of this saga sometime before I'm old and grey; I need more Cortez, demmit.

Okay so the graphics aren't the best in the world, but it isn't set in our world so that doesn't matter. Enjoy the millenium pixelated dragons and April's cute crop top, when you get to the second world you'll see just how long they spent on those gorgeous landscapes. What I would do to move there.
This trilogy has made it's mark in my heart. I postponed finishing the last game in the series for months because I didn't want the story to end. Buy these games, suffer with me, I cried.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#395 out of 572)... it's time for The Longest Journey.

Where does anyone begin with The Longest Journey? It is, perhaps, the quintessential point-and-click adventure game, for better and worse. In a modern context, it is perhaps best to start by pointing out that The Longest Journey is only the first part in a trilogy of swords, followed up by the remarkable Dreamfall: The Longest Journey and belatedly concluded with the recently-crowdfunded Dreamfall: Chapters. Despite the sequels, however, The Longest Journey still works well as a self-contained game, so don't let the prospect of two additional, enormous adventure games to follow intimidate you.

What makes The Longest Journey the classic that it is, predictably, is the strength of the writing and the inherent draw of its premise—which I won't spoil here. Suffice it to say that The Longest Journey is all about imagination—often in a manifestly literal sense. There are a lot of neat surprises and twists, in other words. Visually, The Longest Journey was very impressive when it launched, but a bit archaic looking by modern standards. But the aspect of the game that most clearly shows its age? Please. You know what it is even without me saying so: the puzzle design.

That's right, this is an old-school point-and-click adventure game with some of the most tedious and obtuse puzzles in the entire genre! Yeah, you're going to definitely want to keep a guide handy for frequent consultation. But if you can see past that one, glaring fault... the narrative of The Longest Journey is, simply, enthralling.

Note that Dreamfall: The Longest Journey has a number of compatibility issues on modern hardware. If possible, I'd recommend grabbing the GOG version instead.

The storyline was so in-depth, creative and enjoyable. I fell in love with multiple characters in this game, and I hope that I get to hear more of their story in the further games in the series. The dialogue was brilliant and very funny sometimes. And the world building was so beautifully done. Some of the puzzles are very engaging and you really have to think outside the box to get through some sections. Loved every second of it.

It's a shame this port is so bad on win10, because I really wanted to take the opportunity to play this game for the first time. It's a world(or better said, worlds)full of life, so you likely won't be disappointed by the plot, characters, etc(though maybe by the puzzles, according to other reviewers).
Now onto the objectively bad aspects. Simply put, you can only have a worthwhile experience if you download the HD mod(tljhd[.]github[.]io). It makes quite a big difference: looks better, the texts become readable and the game feels stable and smooth without the constant bugs.
Depending on your reasoning you may find that you can tolerate the unmodded version and its bugs while sacrificing some enjoyment, or that you'll feel justified on having spent your money since there's the HD mod. I personally couldn't feel that way, so I asked for a refund even though I'll still play it someday.
If you want to get a feel for the bugs you should expect, take a look around the reviews. YMMV slightly, but there are bugs pretty much everyone seems to be experiencing.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

this game is amazing; i will even go as far as to say it's one of the best point and click adventure games ever made. the story has stuck with me ever since i first played it years ago and i never feel it getting old every time i play it all over again. it has a great charm to it that really appeals to me and i think it really contributed to shaping me as a person.

it was one of the first games i finished in a very short time because i practically couldn't put it down and the same goes for my second time playing it. the story line and the atmosphere, in my opinion, really sucks you in with it's unique setting and enjoyable characters. what makes it even better is the parallel universe aspect to it, and they really nail the feel and contrast in the two worlds. both worlds are also very well fleshed out and i never found myself feeling bored of either of them - they both have their charm and rich setting to keep you engaged at all times.

i might be a bit biased, of course, but i really do love this game and will always put it in my top 5 games i've ever played. it's outstanding and you should at least give it a try!

An absolutely captivating story that had me hooked all the way through, I was so invested in the story that I looked up a guide when I couldn't progress, JUST to keep following the story. That's how good it is. Though one of these days I should play it again without a guide and I'm sure it would be worth it. The visuals are stunning and the atmospheres are well built overall.

One of the best point 'n click games I've played. The Longest Journey is a thoroughly detailed, immersive, clever and funny game. It has a great heroine, complex and engaging story, fantastic voice acting and challenging puzzles.

On the downside the ending may disappoint a little and some of the puzzles require plot-logic to complete.

Reccomended.
