Ein wahrlich genreprägendes Spiel, das sogar ein paar Elemente aus dem Full-Motion-Video-Bereich (FMV) verwendet. So gibt es beispielsweise zusätzlich zur wunderschön vorgerenderten Grafik an bestimmten Stellen im Spiel Aufnahmen von echten Personen, die in die Szene integriert werden.

Einzig die unglaublich grottige deutsche Synchronisation der zwei Brüder, bei der die Lippenbewegungen auch noch mehrere Sekunden verzögert sind, mindert die Bewertung meinerseits leider.

Dieses Spiel ist einfach klasse ^^ alle Teile mit Ausnahme vom Letzten, habe iich mehrfach gespielt. Man kann einfach in die Geschichte gehen und es ist mit Rätseln und Überlegungen verbunden, die man lösen muss um weiter zu kommen. Leider hält die Spielart (Point and Click) viele davon ab, es auszuprobieren. Und leider werden auch kaum noch Spiele wie dieses produziert. Aber meiner Meinung nach lohnt sich das Spiel allemal. Man kann es wieder und wieder spielen, wenn genug Zeit dazwischen liegt und man die Rätsel erneut lösen muss.

The game itself is great, but the big problem here is, that the version they sell here doen't run fine under any circumstances. I expected a version capable of running on modern hardware with modern software when buyong the Masterpiece Edition, but that's not the case. Also the only language supported is English even though the game itself was availiable in way more languages. I would recommend buying an old PC with Win95 and the game on CD instead.

Good fun but some of the clues are nigh on impossible to find given how dark some of the scenes are. I purchased this in a bundle with realMyst so I hope it's better there!
Still, forgivable given the game's age. Definitely get it on sale.

Fun and engaging. No monsters to kill, no machine guns to fire, no zombies from the dead coming to kill you.
No drama in a chat room.
Just go at your own pace and enjoy the retro graphics and soundtrack.

A classic point and click puzzle game that holds a special place in my heart from my childhood, multiple endings, wonderful worlds, and things that make you think.
There are a couple puzzles that can be rather annoying but all in all it is a great game that started a series of even more great games.

The original, the classic. Myst is legendary for many reasons, not least because of its famously obtuse puzzles. Unfortunately, the game has aged horribly in most other respects. Unless you have a particular fondness for this early 90s original, or are simply a masochist, you will be better off playing the remastered realMyst instead.

I've wanted to play this game for nearly 30 years and finally have found the time to do it. It's nostalgic, yes, but no matter your age, it's a great game for absorbing yourself into the ages of Myst and solving the puzzles.

TLDR: it’s difficult to sell Myst to new players (try realMYST), but if you suffer through the controls it’s still a pretty gratifying experience. [18/20⭐, 8h????, 3/5????]

When I was younger I was into point-and-click adventure games, but I never really enjoyed Myst. But as I’ve revisited it a couple of times, it began to grow on me, particularly the carefully designed world around the puzzles. This time around, I’m revisiting Myst: ME after having played realMYST for the first time (for which I’ve made a more thorough review).

For a game from 90s (remastered in 2000), the renders still look pretty good (particularly if you take into consideration what was the status quo back then), as does the overall narrative. While I admit the puzzles are hard, I disagree with those complaining about the lack of hints: for every puzzle there is a clue somewhere in the environment that renders the puzzle obvious ([spoiler]even if still tedious, looking at you Selenitic maze[/spoiler]). What feels more dated are of course the controls and navigation. Even though I was coming from realMYST, so it was fresh in my mind where I had to look and move to, it was still occasionally frustrating to hit the right hotspot. However, although this is arguable, I still prefer the the original pre-rendered graphics rather than the 3D of realMYST which feels rather soulless to me. Lastly, I’ve never been a fan of Myst’s soundtrack and sound effects, but that may be a personal taste (and also due to technological limitations of the time).

I’m now playing the other entries of the Myst series (which I had actually never played), so I’ll be able to write more unbiased reviews and see how the original entry holds against them.

The grand daddy of all esoteric first person puzzlers, and still worthwhile in 2021 if you're able to look past the extremely dated visual interface. It's been re-made and re-released many times over the years, and both realMyst and the recent remake are good ways to experience the classic world and puzzles, but if you're up for a deep dive back into cutting edge 1993 renders there's still nothing that quite replicates the original atmosphere and experience.

Previously this version of the game had significant compatibility issues with modern systems, but it was recently updated to use ScummVM, which means it should in theory run just fine despite what older reviews and forum posts might have to say.

beautiful game if you like point and click adventures. it took me about a day to complete off and on, but i was taking my dead time, and checked every possible thing i could do for the most part. very interesting story, i would recommend not looking anything up about the game at all, even if you get stuck really try to complete it blind, as when you do it is so rewarding.

Myst is a classic Point and Click adventure. The puzzles are difficult, but fair (for first time players), the story is well written, the acting is on point (FMVs from the 90s found it hard to pull this off), and the world building is impressive.

I'll be honest, my first time playing through this as a pre-teen was a nightmare because I wasn't very good at analytical or logical thinking. You need to take it slow with this game and really pay attention to detail. The smallest detail could prove important and if you miss it, you're stuck. I highly recommend your first playthrough be without a guide. It's so much more satisfying to figure out the puzzles on your own. Enjoy the ambiance and have fun exploring the worlds that Myst provides.

This is one of those game that's just crazy to know was the team's first try at making a game. Not all of the puzzles feel perfectly fair and there's a lot of clunky things about the game like trying to find exactly where on an object the game wants you to click and clickable areas that are not at all obvious. Regardless, the world that Myst dumps you into is very interesting and the game has a great atmosphere.
There's lots of thought put into both the visuals and the sound design to give every area a very unique, dream-like feeling. I haven't played another game that feels quite like this one before or since, and I'd recommend it just off of that alone. Being a puzzle game, give it a try if you like puzzles, but also give it a try if you just like good world building.

Which Version of Myst Should I Get?

This is the Scumm VM version of Myst, so it's effectively a museum piece.
This is the version to get if you want to play Myst as it originally was, warts and all.

If you want to play Myst with updated graphics, Steam achievements, a built-in hint guide and an extra bonus 'age' (world/level) then get realMyst: Masterpiece Edition instead.

If you aren't sure which version of Myst to get, get realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, because it's got more features and you're less likely to be disappointed.

What is Myst?

The original Myst was an innovative puzzle game from 1993.
For several years it was the best-selling PC Game, up until 2002 when that record was broken.

Myst is a first person 3D puzzle adventure game.
There are no enemies, no violence, no time limit, no death, and no gameover conditions until the very end.
You may carry only one item at a time.

There's quite a lot of freedom in the order in which you can do things and solve the puzzles.
There's very little hand-holding, and it can be quite tricky to make progress at times.
You should try your best to explore everywhere, and you would be well-advised to have a pencil and paper handy.

What Is The Objective?

The most I can tell you about the game's objective without spoiling the challenge is that the objective of the game is to collect certain objects ([spoiler]red and blue pages[/spoiler]) from certain places ([spoiler]the ages of Myst[/spoiler]) and return them to a central area ([spoiler]the library[/spoiler]).

If you're happy to have a few spoilers, here's a better description of the game's objective, but still without spoiling any plot twists...
[spoiler]You must solve various puzzles to locate special books that will take you to other worlds called ages. When you're inside an age, you must solve various puzzles in order to find the books that will take you back to Myst, and find the hidden red and blue pages in the process.[/spoiler]

What Other Myst Games Are There?

If you buy this game and enjoy it, play Riven next.
If you enjoy that, the 25th Anniversary Collection, contains all of the remaining games in the series.
Be warned that some are better than others, and people will readily argue about which ones they like and dislike.

It brings back good memories. Always was an amazing game. I attribute it with the gamer I am now. If not for Myst, I would not be the analytical person I am today. Learning to look where you least expect (or at what was in plain sight), opening your mind to more possibilities, and thinking inside as well as out side the box.

This game is extremely hard for people who aren't used to critical thinking and problem solving. I love it. I'd love a VR version as well. That would be AWESOME! I'd buy it in a second. This game is very weird and REALLY hard if you aren't used to these kinds of puzzle games. Download discretion is advised.

My dad showed me this game a while ago. He always said that this was the type of games he played when he started playing Video Games. I bought this game because of him. And at the time of writing this review, I'm already liking it. Yes, it's not from our time, but I like that there is a game that we can play that is still fun for newer gen. gamers. 10/10

Okay so this is gonna be lengthy and less of a review, but I feel like I need to write this here.

I had honestly never heard of this game at all until my uncle mentioned it one time back in 2017. He was an art teacher and an amazing artist at that, I looked up to him as I was doing art myself. So of course, I checked this game out. It looked okay. I hadn't really been so big on the visual adventure game genre back then (I am now) so I didn't end up buying it. It just sorta sat in my wishlist waiting for the day when I would buy it. I probably wouldn't have at all.

In mid 2019, my uncle committed suicide. It was heartbreaking and honestly I didn't know what to think.

It was only recently in December 2020, I checked my wishlist and sure enough, I saw Myst sitting there. I figured, why not. Maybe I could do it for my uncle. I'm glad I did. This game has some feeling to it, I'm not sure how to describe it, but the low textured graphics and the ambient sounds of the winds that have been condensed to hell and back have made me feel that sad nostalgic feeling. I never grew up with these sorta games so I have no genuine nostalgia, but it sure as hell still gives me that feeling, and I'm so happy that it does, because it honestly makes this game that much better. it only adds to this overall feeling of isolation and confusion as to what this island contains. I'm excited to continue playing through it.
This ones for you Uncle. Thanks for showing me such an amazing game, and inspiring me to do more art. Rest in peace.

Great classic puzzle game with surprisingly deep lore. It's amazing that Cyan was able to make something like this nearly 30 years ago. I remember playing this on my parents old computer as a kid and being intrigued by this mysterious world. I had no problems with setup running Windows 10.

Booting up Myst 27 years later after it's release, it's still impressive how much mystique and allure it has.
It's age immediately shows, but once you get past it's early cd-rom origins, you will find yourself in its now emblematic otherwordly, alien and mysterious island.

The static nature of its gameplay, combined with the lack of living beings on the island ( besides the presence of live action clips of the previous inhabitants and their belongings and writing) and sparse ambient soundscape creates a very unique and zen like atmosphere that's hardly replicated on other games of it's genre, something that probably helped it standout so much at the time.

The obtuse and illogical mechanisms, buttons and contraptions scattered across the world of Myst invite the player like a moth to fire, speaking to a inner part of human nature that wants to solve and make sense of things.

The brilliance of it's design is in how it has every solution and path available to you from the start, you just dont have the information and clues required to know that those solutions and paths are already in front of you. In a stroke of genius, the game even has the final solution in plain sight at the start of the game.

Some of the puzzles are duds, and some of the puzzles are a bit too obtuse to be taken seriously. The story is barebones, and only there to serve as some form of goal. There is sometimes the sense that you are playing a tech demo for the almight CD-ROM.

But Myst is still a classic, and if you never have, you should visit it's island and see for yourself the power of human curiosity and stubborness, and how that alone is enough to create a world worth falling into.

I played this during the time it was released and loved it then. I loved the play though again, many of the puzzles I had forgotten and while not a completely new experience, it was well worth the value to re-experience this game, one of the best of all time.

A really nice old point-and-click style puzzle game.
The controls are really weird for today's standards, but you can get used to it.
ScummVM fixes all the problems it had with modern hardware, the game runs flawlessly.

A classic! I started playing this game in 1993 and just recently got into gaming again - it's the only game I played a few times as a kid so when I joined steamed last month I decided to start playing Myst again! What a fun time!! I loved this game! The puzzles are short and pretty easy (some can build to be more intense) but overall the game is just fun and mildly challenging. It's the perfect game to chill after a stressful day and explore a new world! Also, I despise gore and anything remotely bloody or visually disturbing so this game was absolutely perfect in that sense.

I completed the game without a cheatsheet or any tutorials in about 14 hours or so it took awhile but was really enjoyable. I also played each age twice collecting all of the sheets because I wanted to play every end-scenario which I recommend because it's fun going through each age twice. I just purchased Riven but am nervous it will be much more challenging and I'll lose the fun/casual joy of playing an easier game like Myst! I've heard that one will be a lot more intense with the puzzles and will require a cheatsheet or some sort of tutorial walkthrough, but I'm interested to see how it compares to Myst.

Overall I highly recommend Myst, it's a classic for a reason!!

Like all Cyan games, this player would be lost without guides and walk-throughs for all the points where I was stuck. Very grateful for the help. I'm glad I played this game as it was when it came out, as a point and click game, rather than play the Real Myst Masterpiece with today's improved graphics. Maybe that's in the future. But I enjoy the lessons of these games that teach you the importance of the incredible attention to detail they demand. Come correct in that regard, or don't bother coming at all. These games definitely sharpen the mind.

I played Myst when it first come out. I decided to play it again on Steam. I loved it then and I love it now. The graphics aren't the best as they were from quite awhile ago. Still, I had forgotten the puzzles and it was fun solving the puzzles in the Ages. If it is your first time, I recommend listening to everything, reading all info, write down things you see, click on anything that looks like a door, and submerge yourself into the world of Myst. Enjoy!

This game is a great non-linear puzzle game, and I prefer the original graphics over the realMYST improved ones. I don't know why, but I find the old graphics and overall unsettling atmosphere somewhat appealing. Moving forward I am definitely considering buying and solving the rest of the games in the series.

I would overall recommend this game to anyone looking for a challenge. I beat this game in about 7 hours playtime, and only looked to a guide because of a puzzle that popped up later in the game, which I was too impatient to solve on my own (to those who have played this game through all the way, I'm talking about the rocket ship underground maze).

Anyways, this game has some great puzzles, some great challenges, and an atmosphere that I adore.

If you do buy this game, I would recommend bringing a pencil and paper.

P.S. If anyone knows any other games that are similar to this style/atmosphere, I would be more than happy to check them out.

This is the budget version of the classic Myst game. The graphics are a bit rough but the puzzle remains the same and navigation appears to be a little easier than in the RealMyst, (which i found to be a bit finicky when navigating). If you have been missing the fun of the original adventure and are trying to be frugal, go ahead and get this version. It's an enjoyable experience and you will soon forget about the less than high-def graphics. Good luck and remember to keep your speakers on - much of this game relies on sound clues.

I enjoyed playing the game thoroughly. It took somewhere between 7 - 10 hours of gameplay at the controls. It's one I've wanted to play since I first saw it in 1994 or '5 and finally got around to playing it. I had no issues with gameplay as far as control difficulties, bugs, crashes, confusion, etc. It does however take some patience and attention to certain details. Here are my equip. specs just in case that's useful:

As child I only managed to randomly click around, but now at last I finally managed to finished the whole game.
The graphics are really dated, which is especially noticeable in the other ages since the island itself looks pretty good still.
However this does make the game considerably harder than realMyst to play, especially since there are no transitions between the screens, which makes the orientation a bit hard to follow.
But still I wanted to finish the game as it was intended in it's original state for nostalgic reasons, but for new players I would definitely recommend realMyst instead of this original one!

This is the original Myst ported to Win 10. The current version (Jan 2020) is the second port.
I like that they did it. They fixed up a telescope viewer to be easier to work, and fixed a bug in the first port, that prevented a fortress rotation. Thank you so much.
On the downside, the second port can only run on full screen and is pixelated. Would be nice if the game could run in a window like the first port.

Don't let earlier reviews fool you. This version of the game was updated in 2018 to be compatible with modern systems for the 25th anniversary. I have yet to experience any issues on Windows 10, and the game runs just fine. I'll update this should anything change.

The first game of the series and a true masterpiece. It's a very good game if you can get it to run.

Myst is a point and click game from the olden days, where things were simpler. FMV was taking off, and a slew of adventure games came out, one of them including Myst. What made Myst so special, you ask? Well, it told a story from a new perspective, and had mind-boggling puzzles. It really gave you this sense of adventure. Sure, the game has aged like shit, but it's a good trip down memory lane. Get past the graphics, and you can treat yourself to an adventure classic.

*NOTE* This game has techincal issues on Steam, and I have experienced crashes, and has made the game almost unplayable. It's very glitchy and unstable in this condition. If you desparately want the game, try out GOG. The game probably runs fine with Win XP, but watch out for anything newer.
