Zivilisten retten soll

Story: As Captain Martin Walker, you’ll discover dark and disturbing things about Dubai and the people stuck within it. In your mission to save civilians and make contact with a former commander, you’ll make tough decisions that aren’t like other video game choices. Each ethical dilemma Walker confronts are subtle story beats dealt with by in-game action rather than a separate yes/no mechanism. You project their meaning and importance onto your character without seeing substantial in-game consequences. Deciding which of the bickering, increasingly angry teammates to side with, or who lives and dies, doesn’t affect the outcome of your rescue mission. Game really makes you think about the horrors of war.
Gameplay: Game is a cover-based shooter. Gameplay does a great job of facilitating that narrative between intense encounters. In fact, the game accomplishes something most shooters don’t bother with: It makes violence meaningful.
Graphics: Hight amount of bloom and yellow gamma is not really my taste.
Sound/Music/Voice: Voice over is pretty good.

Optimization: Good, runs well on low-end PC.
Bugs: No bugs.

Singleplayer: Yes.
Multiplayer: Not worth it (very unpopular).
Pay to Win: No (no DLC, no lootboxes, no microtransactions).

Spec Ops: The Line has an interesting narrative, an interesting lesson, and an interesting campaign. Several months before Hotline Miami had the world questioning what was real and what wasn't and who was actually capable for the bloody mess across PC screens everywhere, Spec Ops: The Line was doing the same in a much more culpable manner. Spec Ops shows gamers everywhere that war is little more than mindless death and destruction... that the enemies that we happily mow down in videogames are in fact an analogue for *human-beings*. The scenes that you see in the game truly bring you to pause, to reflect on your revelry in what in real life would be an unspeakable tragedy. That crappy part is that this lesson is buried in a boring, thoughtless, unoriginal modern military shooter from the beige era of gaming. The graphics are extremely dated and were not awesome even by 2012 standards. The music and sound mixing are unmemorable at best and downright crappy at worst. I believe that all people who enjoy modern FPS titles who have any degree of empathy inside of them would benefit from a playthrough of the game, but only if you can stomach the terrible gameplay and poorly-aged graphics.

Spec Ops: The Line sets the tone for the entire game the moment you get to the main menu with the ghastly sounding rendition of The Star Spangled Banner (performed by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock 1969). That feeling stays with you as you play through the story and only gets progressively more intense as as you are face with choices that will leave you questioning yourself. I truly can't recommend this game enough.

This game shows the realty of war and why choices we make could impact millions around the world and nowadays we are bombarded with games that give us guns to mow down thousands of people and not dealing with the consequences of actions and the atrocity's that what we had done and get caught up in the fantasy so we try to feel like a hero and as the more you play the more unjustifiable choices that you make and not to think about what we have done this game takes away the comfort and pleasure and that what we are used to instead in this game makes you think what you have done and replaces with what will happen when you cross the line and keep on walking.

And i hope there will be more games like this in the future and the continuation of the series to share more of this story and concept.

Probaly one of the of the best narratives I have seen in a video game yet, I came into this thinking it was just going to be another one of those military shooters and a bit of fun, but 7 hours later I felt pretty stupid for assuming wrong, and depressed, very depressed but in a good way. One of the best experiences you can get, worth the full price 100% , worth buying.

A nice subversion on the military shooter and focuses on the psychological horrors of war. That still doesn't quite pull enough weight to prevent the standard 3rd-person cover shooter mechanics from getting stale however. The story is really the strong suit here, and it packs lots of punches and more than a few surprises. The campaign isn't especially long (6-7 hours), but if you're looking for an impactful experience disguised as yet another mindless shooter, this might be for you.

An Incredible experience. This game's story is an absolute masterpiece and unlike anything I've ever played. Certain scenes gave me chills and the whole thing was very David Lynch-esque, which is a good thing. Gameplay is run of the mill cover shooting, but with some basic squad commands and environmental attacks to keep thing interesting. Turret sections galore and a few chopper sequences. But what really makes the gameplay stand out is the grittiness, and how the characters become more desperate as time goes on. There are subtle changes in how Walker and his comrades communicate with each other as the game goes on. Gun SFX are great, enemies scream in pain, make call outs, and bullet feedback is nice. There are also executions, which become more violent as the game progresses. HOWEVER, there are faults. Team mate AI can be atrocious at times (even game breaking every now and then) movement is a bit clunky, and some keys being used for multiple actions can cause problems at times. Graphically, the game is gorgeous and has aged extremely well. Character models look a bit dated, but the environments are downright stunning at time. Textures still look great and the lighting is fantastic. The game has an art style that borders between cartoonish and realistic, and somehow pulls it off convincingly. Multiplayer I have not played, so no comment. But overall, it's an 8/10.

Final Notes: Clunky controls, spotty AI and some bugs here and there, but one cannot deny the incredible story and thrilling tension the game maintains throughout. Quite honestly a masterpiece, with a few faults holding it back.

Almost a decade old game, still has the potential to awe, at least when it comes to the storytelling. Well-written dialogues along with solid delivery throughout the story. Also, the sound-score of this game is under-appreciated IMO. This game is relatively short, with one playthrough to last about 7-9 hours.

Choices and their impact -
The choices do not affect the story in any way (except in the last chapter) and are rather used to put the player in the shoes of Martin Walker, the protagonist(?). It's up to you to explore the options since the choices are not always apparent. Also, they subtly impact Walker's relation with his teammates as the story progresses.

Combat -
Probably the weakest element of the game. You have the same input button for taking cover and sprinting, which may cause you to accidentally take cover when you want to sprint past a cover. Same problem with the vault/melee since there's one button for it.
The cover mechanics are clunky. The character's hit-box sometimes is not fully covered when you take a cover and can still take damage if you're on the edge of some covers. This is extremely irritating when you're playing on FUBAR difficulty where it takes just three standard bullets for Walker to die...more than what it takes for the enemy to die. Also, ammo availability is not abundant, so keep that in mind. Advisable to train yourself to take quick aim for the headshots when playing on lower difficulties, because it's the most efficient way if you're gonna go for that FUBAR difficulty achievement.

Get it on a good sale maybe and you'll like the game experience.

A fascinating journey into the horrors of war, this game may be short but it something special, especially for a third person shooter released all the way back in 2012. Exploring themes from movies like The Thin Red Line, We Were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now and paying homage and drawing many elements from author Joseph Conrad's chilling novella Heart of Darkness, Spec Ops shows you how little or how far you are willing to go to follow orders or refuse them. Excellent game.

I WALKED THE LINE

A good third person military shooter with a great story. there are a couple negative things about the game,
1- keep killing soldiers in most of the missions made the gameplay a little bit boring.
2- people of dubai are basically arabs so their language is arabic not persian(FARSI).

It is an underrated game - that's for sure! I had no desire to play a third-person-shooter game, but finally, after almost a decade, I decided to play this game ... and yes, it's a great game! The gameplay is plain/mediocre, but the story is the main attraction here - it's just amazing, well structured and very engaging. Words cannot really explain the story, you have to play it yourself to understand and feel it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2542756705

Great story, brutal twists and one of the reasons I consider games an artistic medium. Its not perfect, KI is really annoying from time to time, the cover system bugged out here and there and the running mechanics got me killed many times on the highest difficulty. But the great PTSD-inducing storyline, the amazing voice acting and the impact of your decisions on the campaign makes Spec Ops a must play for all military shooter fans.

Required playing.

This game flew well under my radar when it came out as all other Spec Ops games were just cookie-cutter mil sim shooters that never really appealed to me.

The only thing this game shares with its predecessors is the name.

Spec Ops: The Line is a mind-bending experience with a compelling story. Top tier writing, pacing, character development - it's all there.

Yes, you're going to need to look past its admittedly dated controls but trust me, it's worth it.

If you enjoyed movies like Apocalypse Now and games like Far Cry 3, please do yourself a favor and play through this game. Take your time, don't rush through it, and really pay attention to the details in game. I got through it in about 7.5 hours, and loved every minute.

There are two incredibly smart aspects to this game. The first is how liberally it uses from the contemporary shooter campaign, everything from the language to the general aesthetic. Despite the game's age, its relevance as a piece of meta-narrative on the industry's fascination with shooting nameless people remains strong, as is its highlighting of the atrocities of war/conflict. The second aspect is that the writing and delivery is top notch. Loading screen tips becoming a lot more directed and your squad's lines getting more unhinged, aggressive and desperate as you progress sell you on the immersion of this beautifully ruined environment. Browns are almost boundless thanks to the desert setting, but the moments of bold colours emphasise what this area used to be like before the reality of war made itself home.

All of this is talking around what the game actually is, which is a rather perfunctory third person cover shooter. That is sort of the point, though. The hyper-linear levels can feel frustratingly restrictive at times, but it does help drive home the narrative. A suite of weapons let you mow down wave after wave of enemies covering all the staples. It is, however, what the game doesn't present to you that makes the mechanism of play so thoughtfully developed. Prompts will guide you when to do what action, but actually listening to your squad and taking a second to appreciate the scenario can open up other options for you to take, options completely unmentioned. The game gives you every tool to kill, but you do not need to take every single one.

I found a defining part of absorbing what the game has to say in how you can react to dying enemies and a good example of finding the third option. As they struggle desperately to move despite bleeding out, or begin gurgling thanks to drowning in their own blood, you're invited to perform executions. These are your typical canned animations showing brutal finishers on helpless targets. Executions aren't required though as downed enemies won't get back up to fight you, so you only really serve to put yourself at risk performing them. Instead you can simply let them wrestle with their last few seconds of living before an unceremonious death. Hearing their death cries becomes rather unsettling quite quickly though, especially as panicked enemy chatter cries out. So instead of executing them or letting them succumb, I found shooting them once more finishes them off. To me that's a far more charitable act, but regardless of what you choose the game doesn't punish nor reward you for whatever action you take. It's war, you have to kill or be killed.

The game isn't without its flaws and whilst it'd be easy to dismiss them as being part of the whole narrative, I think that can only go so far. Getting in and out of cover can be deadly frustrating and combat arenas are clearly discernible based on how much chest-high cover there is. Similarly, difficulty spikes come too frequently in the back half and can bring the pacing to a crawl, mitigated if you happen to have a good set of weapons for the type of combat being asked of you. By this point though I never found these to be a serious road-block to wanting to see the story out.

These minor concerns aside, what Spec Ops: The Line offers is a taut, thoughtful narrative supported by solid gameplay mechanisms that encourage you to think a little for yourself whilst playing and to think critically of the genre as a whole when you're not. For that reason, it's hard to see this game stop being relevant.

For years, I'd heard this game had a really compelling story, but it was just too hard for me who doesn't often play shooters. I would barely make it past the first few levels without quitting in a huff. This time, I pushed through... many times, I died 10-15 times before completing a level, but I was invested in the drama and I loved watching the characters evolve as the story unfolded. There were some real horrific realizations in this one that are pretty affecting, especially if you go in blind. Performances by the voice actors were top notch, I could feel the soldiers getting rattled as time went on (just how I felt after dying so often!) Probably everyone who usually plays this type of game has already played it, but I would urge all fellow story-driven game fans to give this one a try!

Short, vicious third-person FPS with something of a horror element, for lack of a better description. Not quite Lovecraftian as there are no monsters other than the men, but your characters grow increasingly shaken during their journey, and maybe you will too. You do get some choices in-game, and they matter for the fate of your character, if not for the fate of others.

Don't worry, you will still do a lot of shooting. It is an FPS after all. Ammo is limited though, so probably lay off on the suppressing fire. The cover system is OK, maybe it was good for the time, but it's a little awkward here, although it mostly works. You can order your squad mates to do things, and the game is a little easier if you do because their ammo is unlimited. Lugo comes with a sniper rifle, and Adams has a shotgun/SAW combo that is nicer at closer ranges.

There is a multiplayer that I have not bothered to try. I imagine if you want that, you are already playing some variant of Call of Duty, or PUBG.

If you like a high kill count with some disturbing imagery and a side of thoughtfulness, here's your huckleberry.

It's basically Apocalypse Now in Dubai. It's a decent and highly linear cover shooter with a very rudimentary squad control system that is suprisingly fun to use. Story exists though I can't say it was memorable. There are some scripted sequences involving using the sand thats everywhere to kill groups of enemies and things like that that you can tell were already kind of dated back when it first released but still they look pretty good even today. The atmosphere is pretty solid despite it being a bit of a corny military shooter.

One of the best things about this game is that even it's got plenty of story and lore for those that want it, IT LETS YOU SKIP CUTSCENES. What a concept. So many games that ought to be replayable have been ruined by forcing the player to sit through jarring cutscenes mid-gameplay like Max Payne 3, so this is a breath of fresh air.

Finally, I don't believe it natively supports ultrawide but I was able to get it working with flawless widescreen and it looks great.

Spec Ops: The Line has terrible controls, graphics that is outdated in 2021 and a unique, amazing story.

No other medium can make you experience the story in a truly complete and terrible way. The story is meant to be told and experienced as a computer game. Not as a movie, not as a book, but as an interactive video game. It is a masterpiece, the absolute nightmare of war and the less you know before playing, the better.

The graphics in 2021 are absolutely outdated, but as for their time nicely done and well contribute to the story.

The controls are truly annoying with the terrible free look and aim system that moves along some kind of invisible grid that makes precise and smooth shooting impossible.

Play once and experience the story, but be warned that you will experience a nightmare.

As far as the game itself goes, if you are lucky enough to not know much about it, then play it, ideally from beginning to end.

As far as the Linux port goes, despite being 32-bit OpenGL eON port, I had no performance issues nor crashes on my RX 580 and managed to complete the game 100%. There's a minor issue where the game doesn't detect my resolution properly until I disable my second screen, but I have the same with Red Orchestra 2 on Proton (another UE3 game), so it seems to be Unreal Engine 3's issue. The game for some reason shows a crash when I exit, at least with mangohud, but it's harmless and otherwise work fine. I didn't test the gamepad or multiplayer/coop, but I believe they work just fine.

Pros : this game is Third Person Shooter with well written story plus great voice actors and high satisfaction game play (The story itself could turn to be a movie)

Con : only thing that annoyed me is an AI partner, because sometimes they could do something stupid such as run out from cover to flank enemy without cautious and that led to fetal

This is an amazing game. Yes, it can be extremely annoying at times. But through the uninspired gameplay shines a story that you won't find in any other FPS. And as you get lost in that story, you'll find yourself forgetting about the mechanics. Even if you don't like narrative shooters, I can almost guarantee you'll like this one.

Play this game. Play it for the story. That's what Spec Ops is all about.

That said, the gameplay has some issues. Enemy AI is extremely predictable in every way EXCEPT the amount of damage they deal, which ranges from a light scratch to sudden death. Hiding behind objects doesn't guarantee safety, as for some reason the player character doesn't seem to grasp the concept of ducking his head. It's very hard to tell teammates and AI apart, and your teammates will often do stupid things that will leave you scrambling to rescue them. Vault and melee buttons are combined, and it's far from intuitive what you can and can't vault over, so you may find yourself about to make a brilliant leap, and frantically punching the air. The graphics are ... acceptable. Mine were pretty much constantly blurry, for reasons I never discovered. There's no way to manually save, so if you die ... well, let's just say that's why I have 9.1 hours invested in a very short game.

Again, I can almost promise you'll forget about all of that fifteen minutes in. But it's worth knowing beforehand so you can adjust your play style to suit the story. I would suggest playing on an easier mode than you usually would, so that you can experience the story's strongest points without suffering from irritating mechanical problems.

crazy that i have not review this game yet. lets fix that before the game reaches the 10th year its been released. Truly one of the most mind bending games i've ever played. coming out during the hype of the cod console shooter craze that every studio was hopping on board back then. This game was ( and still is) a breath of fresh air all thanks to some great writing. its a third person shooter that plays how you think it does. its basic and standard. and the game knows it. The longer you play this game, the more you start to slowly see that parts of this game's design starts to manifest into some serial territory. Ill leave it at that and highly recommend. this game is worth your time if you love games with great stories.

I have played Spec Ops The Line every year since its release. I'm starting my 20th play-through this year. One could argue that SOTL is the most underrated game of all time. Great unforgettable narrative, fascinating direction, astonishing atmosphere, perfect soundtrack, decent game-play and beautiful visuals are what you can expect from it. Even though this game was released more than 8 years ago, it still has acceptable visuals. If you want an experience that you'll carry with you for the rest of your life, I highly recommend you play this game. After all everyone's welcomed to Dubai, don't you want to feel like a hero yet?

My review on this game is very mixed. This game has such a great story but it is plagued with bad programming and bad controls. The mechanics just wants to make you push chopsticks up your nostrils. Its like the game programmer has never played a game before in his life, who fucking thought that binding so many fucking actions into a key is a great idea? These problems even seem to be bigger on the harder difficulties. If you really want to enjoy this game and stay sane, play this game on normal difficulty. It can be a really enjoyable game with an excellent story, just not on higher difficulties. With that said, i still like this game and can recommend everyone to play it.

Non-spoiler short review.

A must-play. Shows the ugliness of war and contains some twists that made my stomach churn.

Narrative wise, it's not like a lot of games out there. Stands out from most games over the years. However the ending left me confused but that's probably because I'm a dum dum

Gameplay wise, sadly it feels like a generic third person cover shooter that copies Gears of War.

Doesn't mean it's a bad game tho. It just hasn't aged that well IMO. It also has that signature Unreal Engine 3 look without anti-aliasing and I have many other nitpicks but I still highly recommend it solely for the dark narrative.

I honestly feel this is in a way an important game historically. Everyone plays different games for different reasons. The Line didn't help me relax but instead broke me a little.

I must say this is one of the best games of 2012 and it have one of the best stories of all time, hard to forget the ending...
It's different form other shooters who glorify war and praise war hero's. Spec Ops the Line makes you question your morals and principles.
The gameplay is common, generic, but the voice acting is professional, the characters sound is great!
Buy this game for the story, not gameplay.

I'd recommend playing this game in a single 6 hour sitting for the most impactful experience

if you see this game and believe it to be just a generic shooter (that maybe has some shocking elements, and that's why it's getting praised)

you're sorely mistaken, this is genuinely one of the most profound games I've ever played, no hyperbole

it's an unmissable video-game, in fact, better yet, an unmissable piece of ART

10/10, well worth the price of admission

(fyi multiplayer sucks tho lol, play it for the story)

Spec Ops the line is a pure mindfuck but my god is the story good.

I had heard good things about Spec Ops The Line but never actually played it until now but I can say that everything I heard about this game's story is true and that this game doesn't give a fuck about how you feel about things. Wanna feel like a hero? Well you sure as shit ain't one in this game and this game will literally make you feel terrible for all the right and wrong reasons which we will get to. When I say it makes you feel terrible for all the right reasons I am of course referring to the actions and things you do in the game but what I mean with wrong in the wrong way is that this game isn't exactly all that great to play. People who praise this game praise it for the story and it is a journey through hell you are about to go through when you play Spec Ops the line. Be prepared to enter a hell of your own making and trust me when I say this game doesn't give a shit about how you feel so be prepared for that. 10/10 a great story but holy shit is this game a mindfuck as well. This game is something let me tell you and honestly it's best played if you know very little about it and the conclusion to this game will make you go WTF is going on?. Also yes, this is a military shooter unlike any other you will play and like I said, it really hates you. This game hates you and you best learn to accept that :) The game is an experience I highly recommend as it's a refreshing take on an otherwise pretty basic formular and it actually contains a lot of psychological horror more than you would expect from the looks of this game. Walker the main character you play as is also a great character and without spoiling too much I really like his character as he feels believable. Walker is the wrong man in the wrong place at exactly the wrong time and I feel that's the best way to describe the events in the game. Walker is a good man with good intentions but these intentions are what causes bad things to happen to him and the world around him. The place you are in is in total chaos and therefore does not reflect the traditional moral compass and I guess that's what makes Spec Ops interesting in a way, It's a test of your morality and there are also certain fourth wall breaking moments in the game and that's something I also feel to mention as I think it's very refreshing to see a game like this focus on the psyche of the main character so much. Try it out for yourself but gameplay wise it can be a little clunky so keep that in mind.

I bought this game on sale, expecting it to be an ordinary, run off the mill, Modern Military shooter that was a mixture of Rainbow Six Vegas, and Modern Warfare.
And I was left with a traumatizing, life-ruining experience.
And if you ask me, money absolutely well spent.

Mechanics wise, this is a standard shoot-and-cover third-person shooter. If you're looking for exciting shooter gameplay, this might not be the game for you. Throughout the campaign, the shooting can become a bit repetitive and you're often forced to conserve ammo because it tends to run out very quickly. Bullets don't often find their mark and you have to aim carefully. Default controls are kind of confusing at first and sometimes doesn't respond well. Not to mention that the multiplayer doesn't have a lot of active players, considering that this game was first launched in 2012.
However, the story compensates for everything that is lacking in gameplay. The 5-6 hour plot alone is worth your time and effort. One certain quote made by Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight can pretty much summarize the entire story. Throughout the campaign, you're left questioning everything that is happening around you, and eventually, yourself. Sometimes, decisions are unknowingly made, and consequences of these decisions often hit hard. The revelation at the very end came as an intense shock. All in all, the dark and ambiguous tone of the plot is unique and not often experienced in other games of the same genre (arguably other genres as well).
Overall, given the mediocre gameplay mechanics and its dated release, the price of the game may be a bit too much, so I suggest getting it whenever a sale comes around. Still, the incredible story makes it worth playing.

SPEC OPS : THE LINE

THE GAME THAT SHOULD BE REMASTERED

Spec Ops: The Line, the last game of the series that started with Zombie Studio in 1998, is a group-based action game in the third-person shooter genre.
The city of Dubai, decorated with gigantic skyscrapers, endless beaches, and 7-star hotels, has been completely captured by a brutal sandstorm.

It seems that the sandstorm has an unnatural cause, but this subject will be explained in the following chapters.

Spec Ops: The Line begins with the dispatch of a 3-person expedition under the leadership of a Captain Walker to learn the status of a military unit that could not be reached despite all calls.

In this challenging mission, we have to fight not only with the sandstorm but also with the rebels as there is a civil war on the pontoon.

Really compelling story, not the usual goodguy-USA-circlejerk that most military shooters are, with some choices that lead to serious moral consequences. Unfortunately this is held back by unbearably bad controls that make the game almost unplayable. The game was clearly made for a controller (although I didn't try it with a controller) with all of the button prompts in game showing controller icons despite using a keyboard, many different actions bound to only one key, and aiming being very difficult with a mouse sometimes. However the narrative is so good that I'd still recommend playing this, or to at least watch a long play of it on YouTube or something.

we all played games and in games, there is a good guy and a bad guy, or the villain.
and in the end the villain always dies to the hands of good guys.
now what happened to the villain? what made them be like that? what made them end up that way?
what made them go mad!?
this game makes you experience that.

you are the bad guy, you are the villain. you go mad, hollow, and start killing everything, while you lose everything. you never understand you're wrong yet you march on and cause chaos where ever you go.
It takes a strong man to deny what is right in front of him.
you either do bad things for a good cause, or you simply do them for carnage.
you go mad 'cause you can't accept what you've done.
there is no humanity in the eyes of insane, predatory is what it is.

10/10 Story
8/10 Gameplay
0/10 Multiplayer (because it's dead)
50/50 achievements in one day :D

I definitely recommend this game, but more or less only for the story. Gameplay is decent at best and frustrating at worst. I have died way too many times due to the cover/sprint system in the game. Maybe that's just because I played on mouse and keyboard rather than controller, but the story and visuals 100% make up for that. Fantastic voice acting, attention to detail, even the loading screen messages add to the atmosphere the developers want you to feel about the chaos and moral ambiguity of war.

Although this game has 5 hours of gameplay, but it has very beautiful content that a person may not like from the beginning of the game, but to continue the game will be a really interesting and exciting game for him. This game has beautiful / sad / ending scenes that give you 2 choices. I definitely recommend playing this game, if you have not played it, you will not regret it! The multiplayer part of this game is dead, and if you have an installment purchase, its offline part will entertain you for 5 hours, but with beautiful content.

Remembered trying to play this and dropped 2 hours in, decided to finish things up years later and boy is the second half of the game much more interesting than what I played earlier.
If you're like me and didn't finish this up, then I'd have to recommend you to finish it because the story turns really interesting and dark really fast after chapter 6.

For a shooter, I can't really remember any other game that makes you think about the actions you've done but damn does the game doesn't hold back from making you feel bad at what you've done. You definitely aren't finishing this game feeling like a hero though.

Really wish there are more narratives like this game, too bad the game didn't sell good enough.

I will say this - Spec Ops: The Line has not aged well.

I mean, truth be told, released in 2012, it may have never been good even in it's own time. Definitely playing this 8 years later, the gameplay is simply awful.

That being said, the narrative of this game is why it is beloved. It's intriguing, thought-provoking, and quite literally shocking. I'm actually genuinely amazed this game was released, given what occurs and what is depicted. It's more than worth the playthrough, just to experience the incredible story of Captain Walker. Thankfully, it's a brief game as well, taking roughly 6-10 hours depending on your skill and tolerance. Just take it in with a grain of salt.

I can readily say that Spec Ops: The Line is one of the best TPS games I've ever played thus far. Let alone the gameplay's flexibility, the storytelling's another world of mystery that leaves you baffled and thrilled. While engaging the foes, you definitely get to feel the atmospheric conflict without getting into boredom or some such. Weapon diversity and usefulness are other pros worth mentioning.

As it turns out, we are dealing with an interesting story. Fortunately, the story is well told. There is the good characterization in the game. The dialogues and monologues heard during the game confirm this statement. The conversations of the main character of the game and his companions are interesting in their way. The relationship of the team members is also expressed in the form of these dialogues and the interaction between them makes the game process more attractive. Another feature of this section is the existence of humorous dialogues along with shocking scenes. In other words, the game has the capacity to both laugh and regret. The bottom line is that the game can bring these two opposing modes together. Combining such a story with a good characterization makes the game brilliant and more interesting. The only drawback to the game's dialogues is the poor translation of a series of words early in the game.

The gameplay fluctuates but is generally satisfactory. On the other hand, battles are of medium quality. The battles may be appealing at first, but after a while, the game takes on a repetitive trend and almost a constant formula is repeated over and over again; So much of the game is about engaging with multiple enemy Waves that surround you every few minutes. On the other hand, with capabilities such as Stun Commands, conflicts become relatively diverse. With the Heal Commands feature, you can also order one of your healthy teammates to get your injured teammate back to normal. According to similar games, they cannot revive you.

Covering is one of the features of the game and plays an essential role in the quality of the fights. It can be said that the game has been able to take advantage of all the necessary standards and create a flawless system. If you are close to a trench while running, you will slip a few meters into the trench and take refuge sooner. On the other hand, the good artificial intelligence of the main character causes him to change his position when he changes height. For example, if the trench is a car, it sits in front of the car and follows the path of the cabin.

Graphics may be one of the most important sections of the gaming community. One of the parts of the game that is hard to say anything about it for sure is the game's graphics. The game is very eye-catching at first glance. the first thing that catches your eye is the good lighting and the quality of the game's shadows. Graphic effects such as blasting, bullet hitting obstacles, improve this quality. The game is also at a good level in terms of artistic graphics, and the environments are designed to be creative in some cases. But the problems of this section can be seen when you pay more attention to details. These problems are more noticeable when some graphic effects such as sweating are tied to these details. It is ridiculous to imagine a face with low detail and sweat. View Distance is not very high and the developers have tried to cover it using graphic techniques. The game's loading pages are also creatively designed and are a combination of still images and dynamic images. Each stage has its dedicated page. sands also play an effective role in the game's atmosphere. On the other hand, merging the sandstorm with some of the events that take place during the game puts the game's atmosphere in excellent condition. The game also has good cinematic scenes.

Vulnerability is also present in some components of the work environment, and a certain number of them are destroyable to a limited extent. The animations intended for the main character and his team are of good quality, but the enemies do not have interesting animations. For example, when shooting them they don't show an interesting reaction. Weapons also have a good variety. Every weapon has a realistic reloading animation.

One of the major problems with the game is that it doesn't pay enough attention to artificial intelligence. Although your allies have relatively good artificial intelligence, the developers seem to have paid little attention to the enemies. Enemies, for example, sometimes fire without a purpose. Or, for example, they show strange reactions when they see a grenade. However, the main character's reaction to some events, such as an explosion, a shooting, and some events during the game, is interesting.

I played and finished Spec Ops: The Line in one sitting back when it launched on PS3, as the credits rolled I remember sitting there with my jaw on the floor and watched the entire credits roll.

Spec Ops: The Line is still, even after all these years still one of the most powerful, gritty, visceral and well written games ever made. Developer Yager, were given total creative freedom to reboot the Spec Ops franchise, and while at the time a commercial failure, the game these devs created was nothing short of a masterpiece that simply didn't gain traction in a world at the time dominated by Call of Duty and bro shooters.

Speaking of 'bro shooters' that is intentionally what Yager set out to make the game seem/feel like in it's opening acts, and then, like a bullet to the head the story begins unfolding and holy moly, until you play it you ain't seen nothing like it, even by today's standards of dark AAA games. Think Apocalypse Now set in destroyed Dubai.

Spec Ops: The Line is a game driven by choices, and some of the choices you need to make are utterly gut wrenching, and we see a sight of war and soldiers questioning the moral of it all in spades, what begins as a delibrate typical shooter ends up being a powerfully written descent into chaos and madness with minds spiralling out of control as unspeakable actions are required in order to survive, I won't spoil anything as this really is a game you need to go in blind with, it will blow you mind.

This a haunting and thought provoking experience that is well worth the time to invest in. 10/10

Gentlemen, welcome to Dubai!!

If you love narrative driven experiences, then please do yourself a favor and get this masterpiece already! Before I begin quick Disclaimer: This is a very serious game and depicts the evils of war and bloodshed. Developer Yager successfully managed to create something that actually understands the dark side of war. It deals with real life struggles and serious topics like PTSD without turning these topics into jokes. Not recommended if you’re faint-hearted. I will only review the single player aspect but I won’t be going into characters and plot details to avoid any spoilers.

The Good

-Spec Ops: The Line is a shooter like no other. The story kept me engaged even after the credits rolled up. Despite all seriousness the main cast have a personality. Interaction with your team is very lively and believable. You’ll witness many npcs and you get to see how deep it gets over the course of the action.

-A big shout-out to the developers for adding realistic hard choices that had an impact to the story, the team put in a lot of morally ambiguous split-second choices all in real-time. This helped in building up some tension. They nailed it given the state of the subject matter by blurring the lines between the “good” and “evil”.

-Your squad is very helpful during difficult situations. You can also use the environment to your advantage to bring down heaps on sand over your enemies by shooting over windows and surfaces.

-Collectibles actually matter to the plot in Spec Ops. There are about 22 voice recordings that share important plot details. You can check your progress by simply pressing Escape key so try not to miss any of them.

Minimalistic design and HUD. No stupid mini-maps, navigational arrows or tech guy that yells directions and ruin the immersion.

The Bad & Ugly

-The gameplay is arguably the worst part of the game. I felt the combat was generic and lacked polish compared to other cover-based shooters like Gears of War and Mass Effect trilogy. At times I often found it very boring and repetitive. The cover system and enemy A.I isn’t good at all which is a shame considering this was marketed and sold as cover-based third person shooter. PC controls aren’t well optimized for keyboard and mouse.

-Enemies have a fixed spawning checkpoint area and every combat encounter is scripted. It’s predictable becomes a cake walk when replaying on higher difficulty mode. One can easily exploit this trick after dying because you’re mentally prepared and know exactly where the next enemy spawn point is going to be.

-Extremely linear level design with frequent invisible walls on every level. You’re not expected to explore any areas unless there are hidden collectibles on the way and this might ruin immersion to some players.

-Graphics did not age very well in Spec Ops: The Line. Some textures and character models do look good and benefit from having high polygon count a major portion of in-game assets has very low-quality detail and resolution. This results in overall inferior visual quality. I’ve also noticed a weird glowing effect on flat surfaces and characters that makes the game’s aesthetic look washed out like early smart phone camera. This bloom-like effect seemed to be a quite common problem.

-I’ve experienced a few sound bugs where the audio would remain silent during few cutscenes. Restarting the game fixed these issues.

The Bottom Line

At the end I believe that this game will always have a very special place to the fans. When it was released in 2012 it turned out to be a commercial failure for 2K Games but went on to win several awards and nominations for its storytelling and writing, now considered a “cult classic”.

The developers got me to feel the guilt, misery and regret. Emotions like these seem a bit rare these days in shooters. One of the fine examples of video games as an art if you ask me. The developers break the fourth wall at one point and question your thoughts about treating war in a game as an entertainment.

It takes a while before you could get attached to the story. The ending left me completely speechless! I did not expect how the plot would unfold. By the end you’ll truly feel sorry for the main character. The writers also don't spoon-feed you with every little detail. You might have to play through the whole game twice to fully understand the plot. It was very memorable experience and it’s going to take a few days to get over it lol. Maybe give it a try if you like good stories. Thank you for your time.

My Rating: 8/10 – Emotional and Soul Crushing Rollercoaster Ride!

This game broke me.

I first saw this game on a shelf in Migros one time and thought it to be another Call of Duty clone.

It is not.

It is the best narrative I have ever consumed in any kind of media.

Real Bad Combat gameplay feels very generic, but the story itself is great.

Spec Ops: The Line, a compelling and gripping story on the horrors of war. A truly thought-provoking experience that subverts the expectations of the usual generic military shooter. Unfortunately, the gameplay didn't subvert my expectations in a similar fashion.

Pros:

+Amazing story
An incredibly refreshing experience; the enemies you mercilessly gun down aren't faceless and emotionless terrorists, but soldiers of the US Army. Makes you think twice before blasting everything and everyone.

+Graphics
Quite solid on max settings, holds up pretty well even to today's standards.

+Supporting Cast
Your squadmates SSgt Ludo and Lt. Adams express their opinions about your actions, criticize your mistakes, and make you question your sanity as you progress through the campaign, They're not just set pieces that help you kill.

+The Radioman
Gotta love 'em.

Cons:

-Controls
God awful. That's all there is to say. I felt like I was controlling a tank the entire game. Many inputs have more than one function. There's no option to rebind multiple input buttons onto separate keys. Button context actions (ie. hit [x] to rappel) were displayed as if I were using a controller despite playing without one. I couldn't find a way to change this in the settings. Also, the mouse sensitivity was ridiculously high for some reason, and I had to manually turn down the DPI on my mouse.

-Cover System
Abysmal. You can never move into or out of cover smoothly. Want to sprint? Character awkwardly charges forward and never stops. Want to take cover? Character stands there with a vacant look on his face as bullets whiz past. Want to vault your cover? Character stands up, punches wall several times, and is subsequently gunned down. Repeat. (See multiple inputs for same button above).

-Gameplay
The general gameplay is just a slog, move from point A to point B and murder everything in your path (though sometimes with moral consequences). Mechanically, Spec Ops: The Line doesn't bring anything new to the 3rd Person Shooter genre.

-Game Length
5 hours??? That's it? I watched all the cutscenes, played on the hardest difficulty I could, and I made an effort to find a few collectibles along the way. Replayability-wise, I don't think there's enough there to make me want to go back and do it again.

-Heavies
I just wanted to add a little rant section about these absolute bastards. F*ck them. They're the worst part of this game. If you don't have grenades or explosives, enjoy dumping hundreds of rounds into their dumb faces. I played entirely on suicide mission so I'm not sure if they are any easier on lower difficulties.

TLDR:

Plain and simple, Spec Ops: The Line is only worth playing for the story. From a mechanical standpoint this game brings nothing new or interesting to the table. The core gameplay is clunky and often frustrating. I can't complain too much though, I got this game for $1 on Humble Bundle. For that price I'd say give it a go if you're bored, but for anything more than $5 I'd say give it a pass. Honestly, you're better off looking up the story cutscenes on Youtube and watching the game like a movie.

We need more stories like this. I am always attracted by rich single player campaigns and this is the ideal example. Even the game is from 2012 with old graphics but you guys must play it for the amazing story.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#463 out of 576)... it's time for Spec Ops: The Line.

If you've heard at all about Spec Ops: The Line, it's probably because of the critical acclaim it received at launch specifically for being a modern military shooter that ultimately subverted the jingoistic tropes that then-defined the genre (and to my knowledge, the genre hasn't changed much since). The reason why Spec Ops landed with such a big place among the critical community at the time, I think, has less to do with The Line's own intrinsic quality as a game than it did with critics expecting another generic, bog-standard shooter... and finding something considerably more interesting, complex and nuanced instead.

But the thing is... what makes The Line so special is really all in its (very unique) setting and the big narrative twist in the final act of the game. To get there, you have to suffer through a great deal of a game that is, still, a bog-standard modern military cover-based shooter. You run from room to room, and while the set-pieces are very cool, you're doing the same thing in each room: fighting an absurdly large number of hostiles while jumping from cover to cover. For much of the game, the most interesting thing going on is the subversion of the usual modern military tropes of gunning down neverending hordes of faceless brown people by pitting you instead against a much more threatening foe: the United States military itself. Yup: this is a modern military shooter where you spend much of your time attacking the US Army itself—never thought I'd see the day.

You can probably tell from my tone here that I'm not coming into this game as a fan of the subgenre, ready to have my mind blown; nor am I a professional critic, being paid to suffer through a game I have little interest in. Clever set-pieces and a unique narrative framing can only get so far when the gameplay I need to wade through to appreciate everything else is so mind-numbingly tedious. So, ultimately, I view Spec Ops as a game that's very interesting to read about, but has very little core appeal to actually play.

Which isn't to say I don't recommend the game, necessarily, -- the shooting mechanics are all very competently executed, if utterly conventional, and the setting (a post-apocalyptic Dubai in the wake of a devastating sandstorm) is much visually interesting than the usual Forever War fare. But at the end of the day, we're still talking about a game that relies on a fairly bland execution modern military shooter mechanics. If you're not already attracted, in at least a minor capacity, to this genre at its most generic (this is me tossing shade at Call of Duty) then Spec Ops: The Line will likely be better enjoyed in the form of analytical blog posts and video essays.

Spec Ops: The Line (2012) | Mar. 17, 2020 | [★★★★]

A solid third-person shooter that delivers intense action and a compelling setting, but relies too much on established mechanics, rather than delivering something new. The story however really stands out - a grim and challenging reflection on violence is something you won't find in any typical shooter.

This is a cover based shooter with a realistic military setting. But still very much an action game and not simulation. I would describe the story as a psychological thriller and as such you will get most out of it the less you know about it before you start. If you know you will like this game I would urge you to play it before reading my review for the best experience. If you are not sure, please continue.

What I liked
- Apocalypse Now setting: The story and setting of this game are definitely the strongest points about this game. If you know the movie Apocalypse Now you will have a general idea of the type of setting they are going for. War is insanity. None of the glorification of it but all of “the horror”. Dubai also makes a fresh setting for this with all its luxury being demolished in acts of senseless violence.

- Character Arc: There is a real story being told with character growth. Things happening in the story have effect on the characters. The main protagonist at the start is not the same person as at the end of the game. They have different voice lines and look different. I like how apparent this was.

- Sand everywhere: Since the story unfolds before/after and during a massive sand storm the use of sand as a set piece is also creative in parts. It can be used as a trap in multiple instances where shooting a glass wall or ceiling unleashes a tidal wave of sand over enemies or it is used to create tension where a sandstorm swipes in during a gun fight. It also looks quite epic to see skyscrapers jutting out massive dunes of sand in the distance.

- Minigame-like sections: Most of the game is the well known cover based shooting that people know from Gears of War, Mass Effect or Uncharted. But I like how the game subtly tries to mix it up with these minigame like sections where you are for example mini gunning the side of a building to help your allies progress or shooting with a grenade launcher from the side of a truck. It really keeps the game fresh.

What I didn’t like
- Iffy Controls: I had some trouble with the controls during parts of the game where it just takes too long to get out of a running animation or when you are melee attacking instead of vaulting over cover or vice versa. At the end of the game I also switched over to playing the game with controller which I regret not doing sooner. I would advice trying out keyboard and controller at the start of the game and going with what you prefer.

- Cinematic trail and error: This is a very linear game and that is fine. There are some very cinematic scenes where you do some basic actions to while chaos surrounds you. At best these are like the minigames I spoke off but some of these where a bit annoying. There was this scene where you have to run through a hallway while a chopper is shooting at you from the side. It took me multiple times to try and make it to the end but I got shot every time just before I reached cover. Then I tried it by vaulting over some cover that I previously walked around and made it. There was no noticeable difference in time. It even seemed slower then just walking around it. That took me out of the moment of an otherwise awesome scene.

- I don’t want to do this: I see why it is kind of needed to drive the story home but there is a moment where as a player I was like “No, I don’t want to do this” but the only other option was to close the game. The characters even say “There is always a choice” at that point. I would have hoped to have a second option that was maybe harder to find. If there is then please ignore this point. I might have missed it. I intent to replay it with different choices when the game is less fresh in my mind.

- Technical difficulties: The game mostly ran fine but I had one instance at the end of the game where I had to restart because my game became a slide show just after you are getting shot by a mortar.

Why others should try it
Overall I liked the game. It wasn't perfect but it was a unique experience at the least. I would recommend it for its thriller like story that is more impactful because you are in control. The gameplay is fine but sometimes just feels off and less polished then other cover based shooters. Its also a serious game and if you are not ready for a violent game that takes itself serious I would skip out on this one. The game has some controversial scenes that will probably make you uncomfortable.

PTSD: The Game

TL;DR: The Line played on FUBAR difficulty in one continuous playthrough is the best recreation of combat you'll find in any medium. It took me roughly 14 hours to get through, dying often and trying the same section repeatedly.

Full review (warning possible spoilers):

The effect of playing The Line on FUBAR in one sitting was revelatory. The Line does what video games do at their best: give us the experience of being somewhere and doing something without actually being there. In my playthrough controlling Captain Walker I spent many long, agonising, frustrating, exhausting hours getting him through one combat situation to the next.

I screamed, pounded my desk, and lost my sh**. The designers even sync the points in the game where both the player and Walker start losing it simultaneously. The controls are janky and even after multiple playthroughs I still found myself accidentally shifting Walker out of cover and killing him. Other times I'd be prompting Walker to swap his weapon instead of reloading in the middle of an intense firefight.

The effect is that the gameplay elements compliment the meta theme underlying The Line's writing. The player becomes alienated from Walker as he apparently no longer responds to our input. The slip ups caused by the control scheme seem intentional; they mimic the way the human body starts failing to react the way we want it to after prolonged exposure to stress.

Moreover, the player's growing frustration with the sqaud mechanics mirrors Walker's own frustration with his men. You begin to berate them just as Walker does for perceived failings. Nolan North, Christopher Reid, and Omid Abtahi who voice Cpt. Martin Walker, Lt. Alphonso Adams, and Sgt. John Lugo respectively, do an impressive job of capturing the disintegration of Delta Force.

Each man ends up resenting one another - military discipline deteriorates and the squad is barely a unit in the latter stages of the game. The further you go in the game the further morale stretches and then fails. Neither the player or Walker is enjoying themselves, both are just looking forward to the next respite or the end around the corner.

As for the enemy in the Line, whether refugees or 33rd, their novelty wears off real fast. Soon you take glee in having Walker kill them, even execute them when they're incapacitated and no longer a threat.

On a continuous playthrough you sympathise with Walker to a much greater degree. Neither you nor he has had a break, and consequently both your decisions stop making much sense. I died a lot through my single playthrough, and after a while you start making mistakes with increasing frequency. I even started accidentally shooting my own squad members because they look so much like the 33rd. Fog of war indeed.

The end result is that you're worn by the last chapter. Your nerves are shot. At the end you - like Walker - are apathetic. He even throws down his weapon in the closing showdown with the 33rd, much to the incredulity and fury of Adams.

Beautiful game, but I will never play it again.

Strange to say, isn't it?

But you will understand when you try it, its campaign is so controversial and it has touched me so deeply that it makes me impossible to replay it, I think one time is enough.

When you play it I advise you to take continuous breaks, because it will give you many questions and doubts about your principles and it is right to take some time to think about it. As for the difficult decisions that you will have to make within the game, make them without thinking, you will get a better impression of what you would have done in that situation, which is precisely the center of the experience of this game.

Get ready to enjoy (perhaps) one of the most emotional and questionable campaigns I've ever tried.
