This is an amazing master piece. While the graphics are a bit strange at first they quickly grow on you. You play as kind of an detective (for an insurance company) who has to investigate a ship that was lost for a long while and find out what happened with each of the 60 people who were on board. By examining the last moment (still image in 3D) of each corpse you find you will be able to deduct who is who, what happened to them and who was at fault. While the game is easy at first it becomes more and more difficult with each new option and scene that gets unlocked but after a specific point it just clicks and you can lock in every cause of death etc without a fault. A real fun experience.

Playtime: 7 hours for 100%.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a puzzle game where you play as an insurance agent, exploring a derelict ship at sea. There are no monsters to fight; there is no treasure to uncover; there is no great evil to vanquish. There is only you, the bones of the dead, and a magical watch that lets you travel back in time to the exact moment of their death.

Your goal is, on paper, simple - determine exactly how every member of the Obra Dinn's crew died. For the most part, the game won't tell you this. You have to do some thinking of your own and figure it out by context cues, clothing, equipment, time and place, and other similar clues. The feeling of immense satisfaction you get when the game verifies that your latest batch of deductions was correct is something that's difficult to put a price tag on.

The plot, needless to say, is almost impossible to discuss without spoilers, but I enjoyed it immensely, and I wasn't disappointed by the payoff. That's all I'll say about it here, because unraveling the mystery of what happened to the Obra Dinn is the main point of the game; it's a mystery worth unraveling.

I won't deny that I was biased in favor of this game before I ever started it, as I'm a massive sucker for any historical fiction set between 1700 to 2000. That being said, the game makes the setting work as hard as it possibly can; the audio design, musical direction, and general atmosphere-building are all flawlessly executed, and do incredible things when it comes to building a world through still-life shots of people dying gruesome deaths.

A string of 60 whodunit mysteries occurring on a ghost ship. You'll find a dead body, and with a magic watch, you can relive the last few moments of that person's life. You'll mark down how they died and who was present, and then find another body in the memory, and you jump to another memory to follow a string of deaths to figure out what happened to the crew. It's very addictive jumping from memory to memory finding clues. Though switching between memories could be more fluent. Now you have to walk slowly through the ship to the corpse of that specific person, when there could have been an option in the notebook to rewatch the scene. Some of the clues were also a bit obscure, so unless you know what to look for, you most likely wont figure it out. The graphics, however unique and atmospheric, make it nigh impossible to tell, which of the 4 identical chinamen left their shoelaces untied. Or that which of the characters wields an unique weapon, when they alla look the same.

60:n aavelaivalla sattuneen murhamysteerin sarja. Johtolankojen etsiminen muistosta toiseen hyppelehtiessä on koukuttavaa.

It took me two goes at this game to properly get it, but when I did, I found an experience I've not really had with any other game for a long time. Are there issues with it? One or two. Having to follow the smoke thing from body to body is a pain and sometimes it's tough to distinguish between certain characters. Pretty minor issues overall though. The biggest testament I can give to this game is that when it ended I wanted more, I'd happily play another game with these mechanics, graphics and overall style with a different story, perhaps in a different era. 8.5/10 (Also the music music/sound design is great)

So insanely good. Finally, a detective game done completely right. There's no hand-holding and your conclusions are based on, literally, hundreds of tiny observations. Obra Dinn has an interesting narrative that unfolds into something completely buckwild and the entire experience is further enhanced by the unique visual style and fantastic soundtrack. This definitely gets a 10/10 and I wish I could play it for the first time again.

Some tips for playing this game: Take detailed notes for every scene - write down everything you can see and hear. You're given lots of little clues as to who people are, which can be a little overwhelming considering there are 60 characters, but note-taking will greatly help. Also, many of your deductions will be based solely on accents/nationalities and also uniforms/clothing. Refer often to the image in your journal that contains all crewmembers - pay attention to where characters are standing and who they're standing next to.

This game. Oh my goodness.
It's phenomenal.
I'll start off and say I didn't necessarily have fun with this game. It is... intense. It's creepy and at times I found it quite a lot to deal with. But that's the whole point. While it wasn't necessarily overtly fun, it was engaging in so many ways, it really is compelling. It's the puzzle to end all puzzles.

The music is phenomenal, the art style beautiful (it's a very minimal art style but it really does have to be). The sound design is superb. The writing is incredible. It all works together to create one of the most immersive game experiences I've had. It unfolds so slowly and so elegantly.

It's not for the faint of heart (I teeter on the edge of that category, which is why this leaves my heart pounding). There is a lot going on. A lot. A couple of the fates left me feeling quite uncomfortable, and I'll be honest I woke up a few times in the middle of the night thinking about one of them in particular. So know that going in, you'll have to stick your face right into some horrible situations. The simplistic art style serves well to ensure you don't see anything too gory, but they're not shying away from details. You can't necessarily always see what's going on, but you know. The point of the game is that you know.

For the maritime history fan like myself, you won't be disappointed. It's rare to see such a faithful and loving depiction of life (and death) aboard a sailing ship. I first played it while finishing up a degree on maritime history and I could not fault it.

I genuinely do love this game. If you can handle it, go forth and be delighted. Just do be aware that it is an intense experience.

A deduction game that has you investigating the fate of the Obra Dinn's crew on behalf of the East India Trade Company. You'll spend your time navigating diorama's of key moments in the crew's fate, narrowing down not only the name and their role to visions/portraits, but also their uncertain fate.

I liked how you could narrow down candidates not only only with more obvious clues like a callout to a specific name, but who each person is found with frequently and where, their dress, and the sequence of events. There is some flexibility on the manner of death you give each person, so you don't have to be hyper specific on a number of them. There are exceptions, such as a difference between 'spiked' and 'speared'. The flexibility comes in handy when you don't see explicitly the moment they died.

Don't have too many complaints, certainly nothing big. Controls can feel a little cludgy for moments. I really enjoyed the music, but I wish it played out more when you opened the book to referencing something. Once you unlocked all scenes, revisiting can feel like a pain sometimes given how they're broken up. Especially if you're on the hunt for a very specific clue.

Anyway, if you're looking for a well themed deduction puzzle that you can enjoy on your own time it's hard to pass this one up.

Return of the Obra Dinn is still, to this day, the best detective game ever made, and it is definitely Lucas Pope's Magnum Opus, so even if he never makes any new games ever again, this will still be his great last hurrah. I do hope Lucas releases something new though, because we need more unique and amazingly written games like Obra Dinn.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a story about a ship that was lost at sea, then suddenly found. You play as the chief inspector who gotta evaluated the damages and stuff, and in the same time you will have to solve just what the hell happened on this ship. And you do this using a pocketwatch. A pocketwatch that sends you to the moment of someone's death when used on the body, or even a body part... Or even less.
This whole game is about finding the pieces that fit and trying to put them together, and you usually won't be sure if you are right or wrong because the game requires Three Correct Guesses to confirm, but when it happens... Oh, the euphoria. And not just from the process of solving, but also the brilliant music accompanying it. The whole soundtrack is PERFECTION, it needs to be heard even outside the game. However, together with the visuals, they both make the game... Incredibly stylish, even in its 1/2-bit graphical look that resembles the OLD PCs of the day, like original Macintosh computers. It's pure joy to look at, to listen to and to solve the mystery.
Unfortunately, since it's a detective game, it's... well, non-replayable, unless you forget everything about the story. But it's fine, it's like a rare delicacy that is expensive and you can only allow yourself incredibly rarely, but it's worth it, even if you're only gonna have it once in your life.

This game made me feel very dumb, but the music is super catchy (much like Papers Please) and the art style is pretty unique so I didn't mind being bad at it too much.

Lucas Pope has a knack for making mundane jobs fun, creating interesting characters, and is brilliant at world building. The way the story is told in a
reverse/non-linear way
added to the intrigue and plot development, and even though I will probably remember most characters (though i suffer from sieve-brain so maybe not), I will more than likely revisit it so that i can relieve the story once again.

I would absolutely recommend this indie game as it is full of charm despite being quite simple as far as game mechanics go, and if you're anything like me you'll end up doing a little happy dance when you do get things right after spending over an hour trying to figure out
someone's accent.
An absolute masterpiece. The story, the storytelling, the gameplay, the music—everything, really. It's brilliant. I adore this game, and it's one of my favorites of all time. I believe the less I tell you about it, besides what you can read in this page, the better. But I can tell you this:

I first fell in love with stories with books. I became a reader, a writer, a bookseller.
Then cinema. I became a filmmaker.
And this is not the first videogame I've ever loved, but... it certainly is the one that made me find that same love for storytelling that I keep chasing wherever it takes me. I'm more invested than ever in what the art of making videogames can bring to the table regarding storytelling in its many, many wonderful forms.

I would actually pay money to be able to play it again for the first time, but replaying it every year will have to make do. Meanwhile, I'll keep gifting it to my friends (all of whom have, also, loved it—like, even my mom) and I'll keep a close eye on whatever Lucas Pope decides to gift the world with in the future.

I've played a LOT of detective games and after the very saturated market of detective games FINALLY we have one game that presents a fresh concept that works. It has all the charms of a good detective game: brilliant writing and story telling, topped with great voice acting and top-notch soundtrack, and a series of puzzles that are solvable and most of all fun to solve!

Only downside of this game is the amount of downtime i get. I hate having to walk up and down to 'teleport' to an old memory and waiting for the 'cutscene' of a memory to end. Sometimes I need more time to observe a memory and the game just fades to black and forces me to jump to another memory... that part is not fun.

But all in all, Obra Dinn is a terrific game. This game goes on top of my best detective games list and will stay there for a long time. I must admit at first I pirated this game but I purchased and replayed it (2 years after my first playthrough so I forgot most of the solutions lol) because i feel bad for the dev... Also, this is my second time playing Obra Dinn and that's why I completed this game in a very short time. On my first playthrough you will get about 10 hrs of playtime so it's super worth it for the price point :)

Waited to get this for a while as I wasn’t sure the story was up my alley. But I knew it couldn’t be bad as I’ve enjoyed most of Lucas Pope’s big games as well as a good chunk of his game jam games.

Didn’t know much going into it besides 1) it’s about a boat and 2) you uncover the mystery of how people died via pointing and clicking. Was not dissappointed!

Loved the way the game was structured and how each chapter brings new surprises to the plot.

It was sometimes a little hard to parse out people’s faces with the way the graphics worked, and sometimes it was difficult to find and re-view the scenes you are looking for, but after you spend some time with the system and have the opportunity to look into the characters, it becomes easier.

The music and sounds that accompanied each important action you take were so very nice and added a lot of charm.

If you enjoy atmospheric, story-rich puzzle games, do yourself a favor and give Return of the Obra Dinn a try. This game is a bit of a slow burn -- you are an 19th century insurance investigator (sounds thrilling, right?) checking out the return of an abandoned ship, the Obra Dinn. Your job is to figure out what happened to the ship and each of the people on board. Without spoiling anything (seriously, go in as blind as you can!), you're in for a compelling and, at times, terrifying storyline that is perfectly intertwined with the puzzle elements of the game. Highly recommend!

Even though I think the music, sound design, story, setting, and visuals are great, I don't believe you have to like any of those aspects to thoroughly enjoy Return of Obra Dinn. The area where it truly excels is game design.

This is the best detective game to date, and I'm saying this having spent a considerable chunk of my life making one of those myself. I played dozens of other detective games for research over the years and can confidently say that Obra Dinn has the genre figured out like nothing else I've ever played. The way it provides you with just about everything you need to connect the dots in your head is beyond brilliant.

If you find yourself confused or wanting to quit within the first half hour, do not give up. It's a little weird and hard to get into, but once it sucks you in, you won't get enough of this game. Obra Dinn is proof that having to think for yourself is one of the most powerful ways to immerse yourself and forget about everything else for hours on end. To me, it's the best game of 2018 and, again, the best detective game to date.

(Don't let my play time fool you, I beat the game on a different account.)

Damn, that's one of the best games I've ever played and even though it's not very long, it's very much worth its money. You can get about 50 of the 60 people correct without big struggle, but the last 10 are really hard to identify, but it's possible. And the music is one of the best things I've heard in a while, I would even compare its greatness to Witcher 3.

This game took me 8,5 hours to complete. It's short and it's full of mystery. It took me awhile to figure out the mechanics, you come into game with not a lot of guidance, you need to figure out everything by yourself. There are no hints.

You have to solve the case of 60 sailors gone missing. Really need to think forward and look for anything that determines who this person is why is he there and how he could die. it also helps if you know a bit of the ship and hierarchy and how everyone looks and talks. The devil is in the details. I had to look up some hints, because at times you can get stuck with no way to progress. Overall the game got me intrigued and finally finishing it was a nice reward and the story it tells is genuine interesting and it fits perfectly with the graphic choice.

It's hard to believe this was made by such a small team of people - its scope feels grand, its characters complete, and its story as vast as the Atlantic Ocean, despite the clear limitations at play. The way Pope works around the lack of true animated cutscenes is ingenius, utilizing an endearing and captivating style of presentation in which intertitles play before awe-inspiring single-frame renderings. This not only gives it that indie flair that many look for in games now, but it keeps the player interested without having to create massive cutscenes. This also helps to make the objective of the game even more challenging - without proper cutscenes, the player is left wondering who said what and what killed who.

The goal of the game is, as assuredly others have said, very simple. The concept of searching for clues and constantly collecting new fragments of information is not a new one, but this plain point-and-click approach is revolutionized and expanded here. Getting through the full story proves just challenging enough to keep the player pushing on and never so challenging as to make the player want to outright stop playing. Everything is right at your disposal, and learning the ropes is the best part. Deciphering accents, mapping movements, studying facial features, scrutinizing every scene, every piece of clothing, every voice, every room for some hint to get your next three guesses locked in is addictive and entertaining beyond any reasonable expectation. The scenes themselves give some baseline clues, but without perusing your journal, keeping bits and pieces of the story in the back of your mind, and using some very pragmatic analytical skills, you'd get nowhere. Where other point-and-click games fail, Return of the Obra Dinn succeeds. The next step in the journey never feels dumb or unreasonable with its hints, and there's always a purpose to each line of dialogue, to each action, and to each scene.

The scenes, though static, are undoubtedly imbued with passion and life. Certain scenes are some of the most gorgeous I've seen in any game, and with the ability to walk around these frozen moments, there are countless perspectives one can make on the breathtaking art. Half-expecting it to be a gimmicky eyesore, the halftone style was surprising not only with its ability to capture these half-terrifying, half-gorgeous junctures, but also in its ability to keep me engaged. My anticipated reservations dissolved almost instantly, mouth agape at the almost immediate elements of low-fantasy and horror.

In a similar vein as the animation, the score is repetitive but never tiring. Those two notes that play each time you discover a body are almost euphoric. Each nautical violin stab gave me some oddly tangible feeling of achievement for my findings, even when directly given to me by the game itself. This also works to the games advantage as its score sticks to your brain with a few motifs being repeated consistently throughout a playthrough.

This game is best on the first playthrough (I'll never forget who Maba is after guessing countless times), particularly going in blind, so don't read too much about the story before you go into it. There's so much more to say about this lovely indie game (I didn't even mention sound design, voice acting, or the plot), but all in all, I'll just call it a perfect game and wait for the next project from Pope and his team.

I am simply in love with this game.

At first i didnt look at it well and just threw it aside not thinking much about it, but when i noticed Lucas Pope was behind it, i had to take another look, Lucas being the creator of Papers please, one of my favorite games of all time, and when i finally played Obra Dinn, Lucas had done it again, The Return of the Obra Dinn also quickly became one of my favorite games of all time, and it has a reserved spot in my heart, and it shows that even with a simple gameplay loop, a well made game with passion can do wonders.

The story kept pulling me in, more and more i wanted to fully understand what happened, even when i was not playing the game i started theorizing in my head what happened to certain crewmates and what their fates were, Obra Dinn is a game that makes you fight yourself, the games makes you think and tests your deduction skills, when you finally put the pieces toguether of an event it really makes you feel something.

To top it off the game has an amazing soudtrack, and even with the graphics only being in 1-bit the scenes just simply look gorgeous, some times i just spent minutes looking at the sea instead of doing the work i was supposed to do in the game.

This game is almost an art form, and i really recommend everyone to experience it at least once in their lives, i was pretty vague with the gameplay because i believe Obra Dinn is a game that you should go in without knowing much, its a one time experience, once you finish it you will never feel it the same way again.

Go play it, 10/10 i am completely biased and i dont care.

A great little nautical puzzle. I held off on this one for a long time due to the lo-fi aesthetic. Turns out I needn't have. The Return of the Obra Dinn is a clever deductive game that challenges you to be observant and use your noodle to discover the fate of the good ship & crew. Its tale is a neat little sea adventure(mis) that took some turns I didn't expect. The period nautical details and accents of the game are pretty much spot on. If you have a soft spot for the age of sail you'll like this game a lot. As for the game's particular visual style, it works very well with both its period and detective mechanics. I very much recommend giving Return of the Obra Dinn a try and consider it money well spent.

Interesting puzzle experience about trying to determine the identity and fate of each member of a ship's crew based on snippets of dialog and still scenes. It has very little handholding and requires a bit of meta knowledge at some points, but in turn feels really rewarding if you manage to solve things without looking anything up online.

This is a fantastic game, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. It requires a lot of patience and it takes a little while to get the hang of the mechanics. This is partly due to some of the menus being a little clunky (for example, it takes something like 3 clicks / button presses just to open the map, which I used a LOT). A few quality of life improvements would go a long way here.

That said, once you get into the swing of things, this is a brilliantly satisfying puzzle / deduction game, and I've never played anything quite like it! The unusual graphical style might put some people off, but I think it suits the game perfectly. The game is very cleverly designed so that the plot and crucial clues are revealed subtly and gradually, and cannot be easily brute-forced (although there is an element of guesswork at times).

One thing I would have liked to see is the ability to add custom notes about memories / crew members.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a 1st person mystery/detective/puzzle game in 1-bit retrostyle graphics. It will take you probably around 10 hours to complete (maybe less, if you're not as thorough or if you're smarter).

Don't let the art style fool you, this is a very good game. Don't be afraid, you'll get used to it very quickly.

The story starts very simple: You get on an empty ship (the Obra Dinn) and need to find out what happened to the crew and the ship. For this you'll get a notebook that contains a crewlist, few group photos, and some other stuff and more importantly: You'll also get a very special pocket watch that let's you travel to the moments of death of the crew.
From there you'll get to analyse a static scene of all the things that happened at that time: Who died? Who killed? Who else was there? Where are they in the photo in the notebook? What's their name? And what was their role on the ship?

You will need to think a lot, analyse the scenes, search for clues, jump between the memories and so on. Which hat does he wear? Which accent does he speak in? Is he also in the other scene that came before?

Sounds like an easy task? Well... there were 60 people on board of the Obra Dinn, that makes 60 fates to uncover and information is rare.

Can you solve everything and piece the story together?
Good luck.

This game is amazing.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first watched a youtuber (the exact one escapes me right now) play this. I watched the first murder and thought to myself: oh my, this is great, I need to play this.

I did not regret that choice. This game is an amazing detective game. I played through it *twice*. Once to try and figure it out on my own, but with lots of guess work. The second time, I was a little more informed, but I found that I could have reasoned through all of the solutions myself, had I paid enough attention at the time.

If you have not played this game (and you like low-action, narrative detective games) - you need to play this game. It's good. You will not regret it.

This is one of those mystery games wherein the entire experience hinges on discovering the story. In other words, the game is only as good as your first playthrough, and you only get one of those. That being said, it is still, in my opinion, a worthy investment of both your time and money.

I should also mention that there are multiple endings, but the save system allows you to rewind to a key point in the story instead of needing to play through the game again.

One of the few detective games where you actually have to observe, analyze, make deductions and test your skills rather than face multiple choice questions. The mechanics of the game are hard enough to keep things challenging while at the same time are forgiveful enough so you don't get frustrated. On top of that nice balance, the whole game revolves around an intriguing story that unfolds as your move forward, so you'll never get bored. The artistic style, although refreshing, may not be for everyone, but in my opinion suits the theme perfectly.

Incredibly fun and engaging. I had to finish it in one go of almost 10hrs.

Return of the Obra Dinn makes me want to deeply hate Lucas Pope for his brilliance as a creator, but the guy is such a damn good developer that all I can do is fall in love again with his work. This is, without a question, the most unique, engaging, innovative and memorable indie game I have played since the modern concept of “indie game” was invented.

In RotOD, you play as an investigator in charge of uncovering the fate of a derelict ship that went missing along with its passengers and crewmembers. To help you with your task, you’re given a magic compass that, when faced to a dead body, takes you back to a sort of life-sized diorama of the exact moment in which they died, and it is up to you to find out the cause of their death as well as their names.

This is not an easy task, as the evidence is not always clear or even at all visible, which will force you to thoroughly analyze the context and use your intuition to fill in the blanks by frequently replaying many scenes after gaining some new knowledge about certain characters or actions in a different diorama that will shed a new light to already visited events.

Also, since we as the players are the ones fully in charge of the investigation, the full picture will always unveil at our own pace, which means that the game will stretch as far as we want. Fortunately, Pope never uses cheap tricks to make the story progress artificially so we can take our time to investigate, think and replay sections for as long as necessary, and if we are still not able to solve some deaths, they will remain unsolved as we weren’t clever enough to put all the pieces together. This makes Obra Dinn the definitive detective game: there is a mystery to solve and it’s only up to us to uncover all of its secrets.

The artstyle is one of a kind and even if you are not nostalgic of the era it emulates it still feels totally mesmerizing and enigmatic while you’re playing. It manages to act both as a homage to ancient computer games and as an essential gameplay mechanic, by carefully hiding clues and information and forcing you to guess and analyze every scene over and over until you fully solve it. The audio is equally stunning, the sound design here is top notch and acts as an essential piece of puzzle solving while not giving away too much at the same time, and it is crafted in a way that really puts us into the game’s world, with very powerful yet subtle sound effects that build a believable environment for us to investigate in. The soundtrack has some outstanding pieces as well that play during our investigation and perfectly capture the “sailor’s life” theme, completing the game’s creative direction flawlessly.

All in all, Return of the Obra Dinn is a truly innovative experience that has no equal, a game that’s masterfully designed and built with an obsessive degree of love and attention to detail and a sensational audiovisual presentation. We will be talking about this game for years to come and the entire industry should pay attention to this kind of projects if we are to help videogames as a whole mature and evolve.

Ahoy!

Many indie games can only wish they were this expertly crafted. Obra Dinn is nothing like you have seen before; you are put on an abandoned ship from the 19th century, trying to figure out just what happened. You are quickly introduced to how you'll unmask the identities of its former passengers and crew: by going through their memories just before they died.

Controls are simple, the premise unique, and the mystery behind what happened will take you to a harrowing tale that should last you about 10 hours. You'll feel stuck, unable to piece who is who, until you find that clue that you just passed by an hour ago: a nickname, a tattoo, a piece of clothing, the fact this pair is always together, everything is important. You'll be taking notes, you'll be making diagrams in your head, and you'll feel like a master detective when you do figure it out. I loved it!

If you have someone to play along, I imagine it's even more fun as the both of you try to compete/work together piecing up every little tidbit of information you come across. And if you are ever lost or confused, here's a tip
I'm sure the captain was behind it somehow
.

This game is a mix between two things: applying logic based on sparing evidence to piece together a narrative, and blind guesswork. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredibly fun experience that is more than worth your money, but you should know going into it that at a certain point your deductive reasoning will give way to metagaming the mechanics.

Many scenes are intentionally devoid of evidence that would allow you to figure out the names and fates of the crew mates featured therein, the idea being that you would use context clues and intuition to fill in the blanks. That's not really how it ends up playing out, though. More than likely you'll narrow it down to a group of 3-4 different dudes and then randomly apply names and fates until something clicks. The game somewhat encourages you to do this, but it broke immersion more than I'd like.

But y'know what? I'm a big dumbass. If you're reading this and considering buying this game then there's a good chance that you're already smarter than me. Maybe you can flex your intuitive muscles and fill in the blanks without a random application of the game's mechanics. Good for you, you egghead nerd.

But let's say you can't. Let's say you're just an oafish moron like me. You should still buy the game. It's a ride that you won't get anywhere else and you really would be an idiot to pass up on the opportunity.

Just forget about all detective/solving crime games. This game is different and just amazing. You really need to think, observe and focus on each little detail (I mean really little). The game doesn't show you the way to solve the mystery. You are alone on a ship with tons of great stories. It's once in a lifetime experience.

A nautical mystery game where you play an insurance investigator sent to determine the events that transpired on the ship the Obra Dinn. I went into the game knowing very little about it, and I don't want to share too much in my review so that anyone reading it might experience it in the same way, but it's one of the most compelling games I've played in quite a while. The investigation necessitates you learning as much as you can about the crew, and by the end I found myself having a fondness for characters I you only know through glimpses but became deeply invested in anyway. It's really put together, and lived up to the hype I had heard about it before ever playing it.

Reviewing Outer Wilds recently really got me thinking about beautiful puzzle elements in games, and how games with incredible detail are often pushed beyond the barrier of great into the realm of impeccable. Return of the Obra Dinn is one of such games. In a year where I’ve played more incredible games than I can count on both of my hands, Lucas Pope’s sublime follow up to Papers, Please stands out as one of the very best.

In a despicably sad tale of greed, corruption, mythology, and grief, you, an insurance agent sent to a ship littered with corpses in 1807, have to solve the fates of all 60 members of the Obra Dinn, whether they died or disappeared. It is an incredibly unique setting already, and even though this premise becomes clear just minutes after the game begins, it’s not even the first unique thing about it. Right from the get-go, Obra Dinn has such striking visual brilliance. It is thematically appropriate, distinct, memorable, and somehow both simplistic yet detailed enough for you to do everything you need to. And when I say “detailed enough” I really cannot even begin to express just how many beautiful details are in this game.

Obra Dinn is one of the most detail-laden games I’ve ever played, and it’s all absolutely critical to gameplay. Games of this type lend to brute-forcing the puzzles when stuck, but Lucas Pope has just done a magnificent job to ensure that’s both 1) undesirable & unnecessary and 2) extremely hard. Expanding on 2, the sheer number of possibilities for every person (60 crew members, tons of fates, sometimes culprits) makes it a near impossibility, as does the manner by which you must solve 3 fates in order to be confirmed as correct or not. Expanding on 1, there are so many ways to tell who is who at any given time. Locations, relationships, accents, motivations, fates, outfits, and even more, all create set-pieces which are richer than a wedding cake with information to digest. On top of that, I know from experience that sometimes multiple fates are accepted for members of the ship where things are just a little bit too ambiguous. Wonderful.

I just want to reiterate though how incredible the set-pieces are in Obra Dinn, though. The way you get the black screen with text and audio, which then abruptly gives way to many jaw-dropping scenes is just perfection. And there is just so much to see. You could look at these scenes 5 times and find something new every single time you look. Beautiful sound design both in the voice-acting (some of the best voice acting in a game maybe ever?) and in the soundtrack departments lend to some incredibly unforgettable moments, much to the chagrin of players like myself who so desperately wish they could go back and play this game again as if they couldn’t remember a thing.

Return of the Obra Dinn has only one major flaw in my eyes, and that is that the final chapter which you are presented, which is intended to link everything in the plot together, is ultimately uneventful and unfulfilling in my eyes. I know others will not agree with me, but I can’t really see how. No matter how I parse it, based on the clues in the story I was already shown, I knew how things were going down and what the deal was. Considering just how jaw-dropping and astonishing many of the reveals in Return of the Obra Dinn can be, it was a bit of a let-down.

Along with Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn is a game I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I beat it, and listen to its soundtrack maybe once per day since. It’s incredibly memorable, so unique, and just so wonderfully executed in so many ways. It’s a game I have to recommend to anybody, and best played as blind as possible.

Obra Dinn fails where many other detective games have failed - it actually empowers you to rely on your own wits and eureka moments to slowly dismantle this gigantic mystery into specific components and unlock the mystery though clever attrition. I am craving more OBra Dinn, this is an experience that stands out amongst the games industry.

This game was a very enjoyable experience. It has bits of intrigue, drama, horror, comedy and tragedy throughout. The pocketwatch mechanic allowed me to experience the narrative in a fresh and exciting way. The timeline of how the story unfolds really had me engaged in attempting to pay as much attention as possible to every perceivable visual and aural detail. Thanks to that level of engagement, it felt rewarding to deduce events correctly, which only made it more fun to do.

I especially liked the way the game made me feel sympathetic to, or just outright dislike, some of the characters involved by seeing critical moments that they had to endure. When solving some of the fates of the crew members, it very much felt like I was adding puzzle pieces together to gradually understand the events of the ship and complete the whole mystery.

This game is definitely a good fit for those who like detective games where analysis, as well as attention to detail, is key.
Thanks to everyone involved in the making of it!

I played it soon after launch, and recently replayed it. It's just an excellent game, with great atmosphere and gameplay, that really makes you think. The story is great and immersive, and the sound design of mostly silence and creaks of the ship, on the ship stays with me despite the fact that it's, well, silence. I also hate this game because there's nothing else quite like it and I wish there was.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a masterfully crafted and fantastically fresh take on the mystery-puzzle genre. You are tasked with unraveling the mystery behind the 60 fates aboard the Obra Dinn. Your main tool is a pocket watch which gives you the ability to turn back time to investigate a person's death. While you are in the past, you are able to see a still image of the cause of death while also being able to walk around freely. The game is split up into multiple chapters which hold a certain amount of crew mates and their fates you must figure out. Overall, Return of the Obra Dinn is an extraordinary blend of charming music, beautiful and unique imagery, and unforgettable characters that combine to create a perfect 10/10 for me.

Said no one ever.

Yet it works. It doesn't just work, it's compelling, and interesting and downright fun. The graphics only add to the environment. Everything clicks in this absolute masterwork of unique gameplay. Not really replay value, but easily worth the asking price for story and mechanics alone.

---{thoughts}---
before i share my thoughts:
if the concept (early 1800s nautical detective game) is even remotely appealing to you, do yourself a favor--go in blind. don't read guides, don't watch videos. turn your lights down, pour a hot drink, light an oil lamp. play the game.

great. back to it:

i don't even really know what to say. this is one of the most impressive games i have ever played, and at the end of 9 hours it has planted itself firmly in my all-time top 10.
obra dinn is an amazing accomplishment of non-traditional storytelling, player trust, and world-building. it's a masterclass on how to use limitations to your advantage, from the limited but incredible art style to the sparse but impactful score to the very limited but eminently functional range of verbs available to the player. it accomplishes everything it sets out to do with confidence and style. hugely impressed by pope and his small team. papers, please was wonderful but this has truly blown me away. can't wait to see what comes next!

Excellent detective game with an interesting setting and beautiful unique graphics style.
Worth noting though that it is hard. Some hints are vague, some are ambiguous. For example, you have to identify three Chinese topmen. But you don't have any clues about each specific man. So you have to resort to a bit of guessing on who is who. Things like this don't happen often, but the game definitely doesn't have enough clues to be able to just deduce everything with 100% certainty. I think I had to brute-force like that three times in the whole playthrough.
Otherwise, game story structure and slow piecemeal delivery of clues are brilliant. You will really feel smart when unraveling every detail based on scarce evidence you have. I don't think I ever have seen detective game that did that kind of thing with such competency.
So if feel compelled to spend a lot of time staring on the same data you gather to establish some connections, rewatch a lot of scenes to catch every small detail, then this game will be perfect for you!

This game is just amazing. You play as an insurance inspector, investigating about the tragedy of Obra Dinn that happened 5 years prior. With a pocket watch named Memento Mortem that enables you to see a corpse's final moment before their death and a blank book to document the horrors that fell into Obra Dinn, you have to figure out who's who and what happened to them during the tragedy.

~Story~
The story unfolds itself through bits of ambiguous final moments to make a comprehensive poignant tale, this leave a big room for the player to interpret it in different ways. The scattered pieces of the story makes you wonder about what truly happened in-between those chapters in the journal. Overall the story is amazing and the mystery surrounding the ship keeps you interested for the story.

~Game Mechanics~
Although the mechanism of this game is quite simple, the mystery/puzzle of this game is tricky. The final moments that are shown are often times ambiguous so you'll have to pay attention more to the little details in it and think outside the box. Sometimes the answer is not even in these final moments but somewhere else in the book.

~Sound Track~
Not only the sound track is epic, the voice acting in this game is just perfect. The creator of the game (Lucas Pope) hired people who actually can speak in the characters' native language or have the same accent as the characters. Thus making the game a lot more enjoyable.

~Graphics~
The graphics definitely brings memories back to older games in the late 80's to early 90's. My only complain is that these kind of graphics triggers headaches for me, my friend also complained the same thing although they attributed their dizziness to motion sickness as opposed to the graphics. I don't know if anyone else have the same issue as my friend and I but I'm putting this on my review so other people can know. (solving a very hard puzzle with a headache is not fun)

Overall, I highly recommend this game, especially if you love mystery, a very hard puzzle, and perhaps Lovecraft or mythology about the sea.

In Return of the Obra Dinn, nothing should be taken for granted. Every time you turn back the clock to someone's moment of death, each and every detail in the scene should be observed and digested. Crazy as it may seem, it all comes together in a vast, enthralling web of friendships, betrayals and mysteries that Lucas Pope has you unravel, one thread at a time.
When paired with a stunning visual style, phenomenal sound design and whole lot of love, you have one of the finest detective games ever made.

A great gem of a game if you are into investigations and cluedo like puzzles. You have to figure who's who and how they died. It can be overwhelming at first but things start to click together as you carefully observe and backtrack to get more information you probably left out. I'd love to see more games like this. Even though it's a game that can only be played once, it's really satisfying to uncover the whole story of what's going on.

Return of the Ober Dinn is the newest game from Lucas Pope who’s other game was Papers Please. This game is all about discovering what happened on a ghost ship. Everyone is missing and it’s up to you to explore the flashbacks.

Return of the Ober Dinn is a solid puzzle game which uses backtracking and recontextualizing clues well. I love the ability to know pieces of people’s identity but not having their actual name. There’s clever moments in the puzzle and the story is exteremly good. Opening up a new part of a ship or solving a major character is some of the strongest moments in the game.

The problem with Return of the Ober Dinn is that while sixty percent of the crew is easy to discover, twenty percent is a solid but interesting struggle that feels rewarding, the remaining twenty percent of the crew usually involves guesswork. There are clues, but most of them are the size of a key in a level that is multiple rooms wide, and you probably won’t understand the meaning of them. They can be anything from who is standing near each other, or the type of sock someone is wearing in a hammock.

Is Return of the Ober Dinn a bad game, not at all. But it’s not a great game which is what fans of Paper Please probably expected. If I was to score it, I’d probably have to give only a 3/5. I liked it more than I hated it, but I think there’s a lot that could have been done better, and I loved Papers Please, so this is a step back for Lucas Pope.

A unique game that blends walking simulator, point and click adventure, and first person puzzler. Interesting visuals, the story is intriguing, the voice acting is superb - all in all it's highly polished, especially so for an indie production. Worth the plunge.

Memento Mortem.

first true detective game. it can seem a bit of a daunting task at first but it gets better; at least that was my experience :p
only real downside for me is that you can only really play it once, but that once was great :p

probably not for everyone but I personally loved it and would definitely recommend everyone give it a try

Really, really fun puzzle+mystery+adventure game! I have only a few minor pain points:

1. The cutscene for unlocking a new memory is a little slow and repetitive
2. The forced pausing of the investigation of a new memory to open the book each time is slightly annoying.
3. You can brute-force your way through some of the later puzzles by mix-and-matching answers until the game says you got it right. Not perfect puzzle design

That aside, this game is full of truly awesome, shocking moments that surprise you and get you engaged to the story of what happened aboard, and the game keeps you interested along the way with lots of fun little epiphanies as you piece together the story of the Obra Dinn and the fates that befell everyone aboard.

Highly recommend, this is a truly excellent game for anyone who enjoys shocks, surprises, puzzles, mysteries, that sort of thing. 9/10

This game is prime example of a puzzle with great execution and presentation.
Rather unique idea for a game and I'm glad it came out so good.
Once you're done not much replay value.
Loved every second of the game and two thumbs up.

I bought this game on a whim as I fancied a bit of puzzle mystery action and I obsessively 100% completed it within two days. I honestly cannot recommend this game enough!

Pros:
+ Incredible and unique story telling
+ Art direction fits the scene perfectly
+ Has better voice acting than most triple A games
+ Innovative anti-frustration features keep you from resorting to walkthroughs
+ Fantastic individual stories and character development within the narrative framework

Cons:
- Replay value is zero, if you complete this game once you'll never need to launch it again
- There's no real 'greater' mystery - the fate of the crew as whole becomes apparent early on.
- I can never experience this game for the first time again :'(

I really hope this is the beginning of a series or genre. I just love the game mechanic, it's challenging and provides lots of satisfying a-ha moments. The plot resolution doesn't really live up to the effort it takes to discover, but for me the enjoyment was in the journey. The aesthetic is great, albeit possibly camouflage for the developer's modest resources (understandable).

The only disappointment was knowing, after I finished it, that I would have to wait a long time before I could play it again. You can't repeat that first experience but you can get a semblance of it if you've forgotten everyone's names.

One of the best games you'll play, originally bought it for Steam, then decided to get it for the Switch and now have bought it for the Xbox, the only other game i've done that for is the Witcher 3

Return of the Obra Dinn is an exceptional narrative experience. You are an investigator who has to find out what has happened to the missing crew in the ship. Your only tools are a diary which will offer some basic information like the names and roles of the crew, a special pocket watch and your wits.

Looking around the ship can give the impression that it will not take long to solve all the misteries aboard, it's a small ship after all. The truth, however, is that it will take all your deductive and reasoning skills to the limit to find the fates of everybody aboard the Obra Dinn. Here is when the game shines the brightest, you need to create theories, establish relationships with vague clues and little details present in the different scenes you will observe. There is a jingle that plays when you have guessed correctly the fate of 3 people, it fills you with joy and the push to continue forward, such a great feeling.

I truly recommend to play with more people, you can discuss the different clues and leads of each person. You will need all the help you can get to crack this case open. Different perspectives are invaluable in a game like this.

Obra Dinn is a masterpiece, this type is narrative is so engaging that I was a little sad when the end of the game was getting near, once you get into the pace of the game you will be sucked in.

I am over 50.
I have played a lot of games.
The Return of the Obra Dinn is one of the best games I have ever played.

It is one of those rare cases (though certainly by design) where everything comes together. Story, game play, graphics, challenge level, feeling of accomplishment on advancement. Simply an outstanding piece of work that I enjoyed every moment (even when frustrated) and will remember fondly.
