Die meisten wollen hoch hinaus, hier geht es aber weit hinab. Dabei buddelt man mit Metroidvania-Elementen in einer Steampunk-Western-Welt.
Wie so oft gilt auch hier - blöde Ideen zahlen sich aus.

Spoiler-freie Review zum Buddelgame

Ein schönes, kurzweiliges Game, in dem man Mineralien ausbuddelt, sie wieder verkauft und mit dem Geld seine Werkzeuge verbessert. Das Spiel ist mit ungefähr 8 Stunden genau so lang, wie ich Spaß an dem Spiel hatte, es hatte also die perfekte Länge.

Die Story ist in 1-2 Sätzen kurz erklärt: Der Vater der Hauptfigur hat uns eine Mine vermacht und wir versuchen herauszufinden, was so besonders an dieser Mine war und bringen Leben zurück in das alte Dorf über dem Schacht.

Die Fallen im Untergrund sind teilweise sehr mies, aber immer fair gestaltet. Die Upgrades fühlen sich super gut an. Wenn man zurück an die Oberfläche geht, um alles zu verkaufen, freut man sich richtig, mit dem neuen Upgrade wieder unter Tage zu gehen. Mit jeder Stunde, die man länger lootet und levelt fühlt man sich immer mächtiger, als würde man die ganze Mine in einem Zug leerräumen.

Dieses Spiel hat mir die gesamten 8 Stunden lang sehr viel Spaß gemacht und ist meines Erwachtens die 10€ wert. Im Angebot für 3-4€ ist es das aber definitiv.

Ich freue mich sehr, in ein paar Monaten den Nachfolger zu spielen - fürs erste habe ich nämlich genug gebuddelt.

There is an ????achievement that says: finish the game in less than 2 hours 30 minutes - makes this ????game-quest a managable projekt ???? ...everything about the game gets more dimension... ...just a vr-funktion is not a proof of an etablished spectrum - the again-flair is not often used our days but essentially and should not be missing

Fun and addictive game. Each time you come to the surface to level up and get more upgrades it's extremely satisfying and gives a good sense of progression and the game ends before it gets tedious and boring.

I'm very tempted to say, skip this game and play the sequel, since SteamWorld Dig 2 is so vastly superior. The problems I found with the first game are a lot of little things, like the absence of a big map you could consult (only a tiny minimap in the corner that can't be examined); the lack of reliable teleports for significant chunks of the game; deaths being massively penalising (losing half your money); and a couple of janky Achievements that ask quite a lot of you. All of these issues were fixed, and then some, by the second game.

I wouldn't say it's bad enough for me to give it the thumbs-down, but it's sailing close to the wind for me. I think playing the sequel first really made me cognisant of this first game's shortcomings. So either go for the superior sequel or commit to playing both in order, I guess.

It's much shorter and more basic than the sequel, which I played through first, but it's still fairly enjoyable. The final fight was much too easy with all upgrades though. I wish the games had a bit more in terms of cinematics, especially with the endings, which are a bit lacking. It gets a thumbs up from me, but if you want to skip this one and go for the sequel, you're not missing out on much.

Pros:

Nice cartoonish art style.
Great western-like soundtrack.
Western & Steampunk themes platformer with Metroidvanian influences.
Mining and digging feel really good.

Cons:

The plot is simple.
Becomes repetitive very quickly. You just dig deeper and deeper, occasionally return to the surface to sell the minerals and upgrade your equipments. This simple loop repeats until the end. Luckily the game is quite short (only several hours long) so it does not feel too dragging.
Surprisingly easy to die. Enemies hurt on touch and kill you quickly, falling rocks kill you immediately, etc. The penalty of death is the loss of the minerals in your bag and half of your money. This makes the game very stressful, despite the fact that this is supposed to be an exploration game.
Most skills require water, which is not easy to find especially in late game.

In short, I do not really recommend this game.

Edited: Having played its successor SteamWorld Dig 2 now, I would say players interested in SteamWorld Dig should forget it and play SteamWorld Dig 2 instead. All annoying aspects of SteamWorld Dig have been taken care of in SteamWorld Dig 2 (see my review of SteamWorld Dig 2 here https://steamcommunity.com/id/lijunkang/recommended/571310/). And plot-wise it is not important to play SteamWorld Dig before SteamWorld Dig 2.

While this is still a positive review, it honestly is just barely one.

The game has a nice and original art style, the setting is fun and interesting and the gameplay is decent, but honestly these are pretty much all the positives I can list for this game.

I guess it is time to list the negatives:
The controls are quite slow and a bit unresponsive at times, constant item switching as well makes playing the game a bit frustrating.
The combat is very boring and annoying, all enemies have very basic attack patterns (usually just moving from left to right and some of them throw an item here and there).
Despite this fighting enmies is still a hassle, mainly because of the annoying controls mentioned earlier and to top it off the player has ridiculously short range (at least until pretty much the end of the game)

Speaking of the end of the game, it happens quite suddenly and very soon, the main game only took me about 2-2.5 hours to complete and to find all of the secrets (and some achievements) took me 1.5-2+ hours.
The secrets are an absolute pain in the butt, the game gives you (almost) no hints for their locations and as I mentioned above it took me almost the entire duration of the main game just to find the last few secrets I missed, the main reason for this was the fact that I had to go across the entire game's route and caves multiple times to find them.
Worst part is that there is almost no payoff for it as well, besides an achievement, speaking of achievements. They are quite cruel, a lot of them cannot be obtained if you are unlucky or made a minor mistake, and a large amount of the other ones are a complete pain to get.

All in all, the game could be a lot better, it is only barely a positive review for me, it honestly is a 6/10 if not a bit lower.

It's elegant simplicity, unique atmosphere, excellent charmful graphic and sound design and light difficulty make this game a joy to play.

Content is meager, but the game mechanics are well done and exploring the levels when speedrunning makes it a really fun sensation.

As much as I prefer the second game in the Dig series, this one is still worth playing today.

A lovely and charming little game. Moves at just about the right pace when it comes to frequency of upgrades, new levels and the like. Great music, great art direction, and fun gameplay. Relatively short, but also worth an occasional replay.

A quite neat game with a cute art style. You really need to play for at least half an hour to be enjoyable. That's when you start not having to go back every 5 minutes or so.

Overall, huge thumbs up from me!
As long as I don't have to listen to the mumbling anymore.

I've beat this game on my Wii U, 3DS, Switch, and on PC before and soon again!
This is one one my favorite game series and it's really fun!
Decent story, good characters, fun gameplay, etc. 100% would recommend!

It's good for around 5 hours. The story - particularly the ending, could be fleshed out, but it's something decent to quiet your mind with for a while. Would probably wait for a sale, as I think I'd be disappointed if I paid 10 bucks for this.

I recommend this game to nearly anyone, as it is a unique well done digging metroidvania with a charming robot steampunk theme. I rarely play dig/mining games, but I love them and this is no exception. I was introduced to the Steamworld franchise through Steamworld Heist a year or two ago which I loved, as it is much like the turn based Worms games. It bring a level of strategy that is not in any other Metroidvania: How do I create a path downward that I can climb back up? It might be my favorite metroidvania and the best <100 MB size game I've played on PC in years or the past decade.

Here is what you need to know:
-The game was only 6-7 hours long for me, but it explored the game mechanics and story a good amount so it doesn't feel like it drags on for too long or was cut short. No inherent replay value beyond one play through.
+The story is serviceable, but many enemies have personality and they built a cool underground world that also has charming town characters.
+A good variety of upgrades and purchasable tools like dynamite, ladder, light post, teleporters (costs precious orbs though that are limited in supply).
?There is no way to attack while in midair or while wall riding. Forces the player to be strategic about the path you make, otherwise getting certain gems/metals in hard to reach places will be harder or impossible to mine.
+Good variety of new abilities as you explore the underground after discovering doors to mini dungeons & exploring those, and they are almost all needed to progress in the game. Mini dungeons are split with some providing new abilities and some only providing orbs and/or more valuable gems/metals.
-When above ground, the red indicator for where to go next may not be best, as it ignores wherever the teleporter goes. Teleporter goes to whichever last underground teleporter you came from, whether it is one that was built into the level or whether it was one that you placed & used yourself. Using a different teleporter resets where the above ground teleporter goes!
-There is only one real boss in the game, but I found them to be challenging, as I needed to ensure that I had purchased all but a few upgrades.
?When you die, you lose half of your gold and all gems/metals are dropped where you died unless you are in a mini-dungeon of sorts. In a mini dungeon, you will restart the dungeon the same way & things when you entered.
-Screen mode and resolution require editing a config file (see pcgamingwiki.com), except for turning on/off vsync. It's all 2D visuals though, so don't expect it to look any better if you crank up the resolution.

I can't believe I haven't written a review on this. This is one of the very few games I've ever completed on multiple platforms (completed on Steam & Wii U, and I also have it on XBOX1). A wonderful platformer/metroidvania-lite. The sequel expands and improves on everything exponentially, but the first one still has a simple charm that I almost enjoy more than the 2nd. If you have to choose one though, I think I would call the 2nd game superior. Both are must-plays though IMO.

(Steamworld Heist is also a must-play- I haven't played the SW Quest game yet, but I'm sure it's great)

This game is a very good execution of a mining adventure platformer. The goal is to reach the very bottom of the mine. And so on your journey you will be going through 3 different environments, collecting more and more valuable ore and selling it for upgrades. It is important to think about your pathing as you go down as you need a way to get back up, this makes it so you’re always thinking and not just doing mindless digging. Upgrades come in the form of better gear, items and your character capabilities. You will also be encountering different rooms/caves that are more so focused on platforming, which is a nice addition as it provides for some variety in gameplay.

It is all exactly what you would want and expect from a mining game. Simple controls, upgrades and lots of platforming. It is also fairly short at about 5 hours of content, so only a sale price would be justified in my opinion.

It is kinda good but after a while you get bored of the same music and just being mining without founding anything cool else than habilities that u barely use. Idk if the second game is better but i don´t recommend this one at all, if ur gonna play thisone to know the story previous to the second game I´d tell you to just skip straight to that one.

Have you ever played a gold miner back in flash games era? Have you ever wanted something more than that? This is everything and more you wanted so much. Not everyone will understand it, but few will absolutely love it. Story is rather simply, yet addictive. You explore mines deeper and deeper, hoping to find cool upgrades. Your only concern is to avoid unnecessary fights and dig more. The only downside is that, the game is pretty short, you can beat it in 3-4 hours.

This was a really fun game. It had the same feel of Motherload from the flashgame era in the early 2000's. It was a very fun game that didn't run to long or run too short. There is ~5 hours in this game that I found very enjoyable.

At the first glance, this might seem boring.
The game doesn't look special, that's true.
But when you actually play it, It's perfect.
You can milk at least seven hours in there.
It's totally worth a buy during a discount.
The story isn't great, but it was enjoyable.
What I enjoyed the most is the gameplay.
This whole game was simply 'fun' to play.
It was a pretty decent experience overall.
The controls were smooth and satisfying.
And the visual style is quite beautiful too.
I really enjoyed it and I do recommend it.

Very addicting. I loved the graphics, the music and gameplay. What I didn't like is how short the game felt once you reached the end. In fact, I didn't realize I had finished the game because it felt so anti-climatic and not at all challenging. Still recommend because it's super fun to play and if you *like* quick games, this is a great one.

Cowboy,, good. 2d minecraft fun. Hated that one falling block puzzle cave tho,, took me like 30 minutes to figure it out :(
also a turtle got stuck in the soup and I couldn't get him out.
rest of the game's pretty fun though

As close to all the other negative reviews are describing, the gameplay is plain and boring.
I agree.

Additionally, I encountered a pretty nasty bug in my playthrough:
I received the drill, was killed by a boulder later and never saw it again...
I tried EVERYTHING, switching my tools my weapons redoing the challengeroom (in which you have to open all three doors again, when leaving once)
I honestly cant believe they didnt fix it until now, there even were people reporting the bug in 2014!
So basically its a plain and boring, much too short, buggy mess of a game!
No, thank you! (maybe would work in form of a browser game)

I can't really complain, because I got the game for $2.49, but this wasn't much deeper than those free mining webgames that were everywhere 10 years ago. I didn't dislike the game—if there was a 'thumb-to-the-side' I'd be rating it that—but it's short and shallow.

The steampunk western aesthetic was cool, but didn't really get a chance to shine. Might take a look at other SteamWorld games (when they're on deep sale) and see if they execute it better at some point.

If you are looking for mining game like Motherload this is not a game for you:

- there is no thrill of getting as much loot as possible and getting back before you run out of fuel, because your backpack is always too small (so you're going out anyway)
- there are just few types of resources to mine and when extracted you will get random item of that category, so there is no excitement of seeing some rare gem and trying to obtain it
- small field of vision and rather narrow map, again, take away excitement of finding something rare and exploring
- most enemies are not challenging, just annoying - you stand and have to hit them (too many times)

If you are looking for simple platformer with (simple) puzzle elements this may suit you - it's ok. I would recommend SteamWorld Dig 2 though as it's better in nearly every way in that regard.

Fun game although very short. Still, definitely worth a purchase and I am looking forward to playing SteamWorld Dig 2. Some platforming, but not a ton of combat. Definitely a fun game to play and relax with.

SteamWorld Dig is a mining themed platformer.

PROS:
+ Gfx: As in all SteamWorld games, characters have their charm, Steampunk style is cute, palette and everything is easy on the eye.
+ Sfx&Music: Again as in all games in the serie, western based music is awesome. Sfx does its job, and yet once again i found the 'wobbly wobbly' robot voiceovers annoying.
+ Controls: I started playing with keyboard than switched to Steam Controller, eveything was perfect. Controls are really tight.
+ Gameplay: Gameplay is based on this; you dig deeper and deeper, do some puzzle platforming too, gain money, upgrade equipment, gain new tricks and powers, continue to delve deeper, beat the final boss. In my playthrough, i didnt encounter any bugs or annoyances. It's about 4 hours long, never bores, never too hard (always casual even), and i think it deserves full price.

Cons:
- Story: Even the characters are cute, story is well... not standing out in any way.

FINAL:

7/10

Game is fun. Easy to pick up and play, and finish even. I cant say its great, i cant say its mediocre. Lets say its good and above the average. I will definitely play the 2nd game and check on future SteamWorld titles, developer is into something here.

This game is a very fun and relaxing platformer with a Steampunk theme.
One of the few games I have on another platform, (3DS,) that I have been extremely happy to purchase again.

Hello fellow gamers!! I am going to tell you a little bit about Steam World Dig. So let's get started!!

First, one of the things is that the game last about 6 hours. The theme is western steampunk and animation will catch your eye I love how it's made!! And the main thing you do is DIG!! Trust me if you love digging, you will love this game, but if you don't you still will!! The deeper you dig, the better the gems are. Yes, there are a lot of gems in the game! You will find them and sell them to the towns folk and they give you money so you can buy upgrades for your robot. When you start the game you will have a pick axe. Later, you will get a drill that will use water you can find water underground in pockets of earth. You can find secret passages if you look good and hard!! And watch out for enemies!! When you die you drop all the gems you found so watch out and be really careful!! If you do die you have to dig all the way back to where you were underground. But later in the game, you can buy a teleporter and use it wherever you go. However, you can only place it once, so be really picky where you put it. At the end of the game watch out for a big boss!! I loved the full 6 hours it lasted and playing it a second time will be just as fun!! The full 10 dollars I paid was 100% worth all the money I spent!! So go ahead and try it out. Trust me, you will love it!!

Steamworld Dig is a platform mining adventure with an addicting gameplay loop. Even if you don't like platformers, you may like this game. Unlike hardcore platformer games like Crash Bandicoot or Super Meat Boy, Steamworld Dig is all about digging and gathering resources. It may sound like a grind but believe me, it isn't. Every resource you collect helps you unlock upgrades for your character. You can also unlock some cool new gadgets by exploring caves which are the main objectives of the game. This is a perfect little game to pass the time in quarantine.

Thanks to Brad from Giant Bomb I gave the game a chance, and like he said is SO good, the progression through levels is really smooth, the new mechanics and gadgets feel really useful. The game feels great, the controls are good and are really responsive. It's a great experience, really condensed in a few hours. If you were thinking about buying it, do it, its worth every penny or peso, or whatever your currency is.

I would highly recommend this game. I like the feeling of mining, gathering minerals getting deeper and deeper, meanwhile upgrading your tools and gadgets. It's one of those games that 1 hour feels like 15 minute spent. It just sucks you in. I've played for 18 hours since I took my time and tried to get every mineral possible.

I've ALWAYS loved this game ever since I originally bought on my old 3DS. It is so much fun to just challenge yourself once you know how to to do everything and beat the game. Possibly do speedruns, go for difficult achievements, etc. 10/10 From me

The bad things: it's easy (specially the puzzles) and, above all, it is too short (about 3 hours).

In any case, it's a pretty good choice if you like this kind of game.

Steamworld Dig is a really relaxing and fun game - it has the pushing for upgrades element from metroidvanias, but it doesn't have a huge complicated map or intricate bosses. It's about digging deeper, finding more money, buying upgrades, finding upgrades, and that's it. And it works great!

The game reminded me of Terraria and Spelunky.
It has the the zen-feeling of Terraria when you know where you need to go to find an item, and you're just digging while idle-mindedly dodging hazards, fighting enemies, listening to the thumps of the pickaxe.
And at the same time it has the Spelunky-ish feel of route-planning as upwards movement is limited for most of the game, same goes for reaching, or mining gems - and you can make some fancy kills by using the environment well, or master dynamite-throwing.

Graphics are neat and equally good throughout the game, it's easy to read everything on the screen. There was a constant feel of progress, exploration and adventure, the music supported it well.
The upgrades were nicely paced as well, you can unlock everything by the end of the game, and the final health and water tank upgrades aren't necessary to begin with. It's still worth to get the most possible gems, but not mandatory, and the game lets you backtrack at a very reasonable way.
I can't name any issue with the game or anything negative about it. (Missed a few achievements when internet connection dropped, but that's not on the game)

It's a really nice little game that you can complete on a lazy Saturday, or two weekday nights. And for that, I totally recommend it :)

This is a lovely plateformer with nice controls. I have enjoyed playing it a lot. I also found the story nice and with some of its challanges it has replayability.
