Ein gutes JRPG mit einigen Ups and Down

It's a fun enough game to sink your teeth into. If you're on a JRPG kick then this is a decent choice if you grab it on sale.

I had my fun, but the game over stayed it's welcome despite being on the shorter side when it comes to JRPGs. (30-40 hours) This is a game that does not respect your time and has you backtracking and running across empty fields right until the very end. Fast travel is purposely annoying to use and movement is limited to further bloat your playtime. Exploration is very rarely rewarded with anything the player actually wants and is largely a waste of time.

The story feels unfinished. The main party saves it from being a complete waste of time though.

Gameplay is fun, but random battles are pretty spammy so by the end you're running away to avoid them all.

The music and graphics are both quite good but keep in mind this is basically a PS3 game so environments in the open world are pretty sparse. This game also has an arbitrary 30 fps lock on PC, if you care about that, dig up the 60 fps fan patch somewhere online.

Leaving a recommendation because it's worth what I paid for it ($7.49 US). However, if you're deciding between this and any other Tales game, go with the other one. I haven't played them all yet but the community is unanimous that this is the worst out of the ones on Steam.

6/10, very mid, but not bad.

Probably the weakest 'Tales' game I've played. It's really bland, the characters are completely forgettable, the plot is uninteresting and the battle system is somewhat 'button mashy' even on difficulties above normal.

It's not a disaster, but it's definitely not a particularly good game.

This game is hard to write a review about. No, it doesn't live up to the hype of a Tales game. It is a bit bland,
But a bland Tales game is still better than a lot of the RPG garbage out there..

But like so many other things, you get what you put into it.

I'll make a Mass Effect comparison here;
There is so much back story and dialog to Mass Effect that if you just did a speed-run of the game, didn't interact with your crew and focused on only combat and missions, you could finish the game and not understand the hype or what was so great about Mass Effect.

Tales games have squad based combat and they really try to get you to connect with your squad mates. Learn about them and their story or you just straight up don't care and have a worse experience for it.

That being said, for ANYONE who finished this game please for the love of god watch the anime. The game kind of cliff hangers the end, (no spoilies!) but the anime does a great job wrapping it up.

If you enjoy RPGs and have run out of games to play, give this game a try! You might not be as disappointed as others who have reviewed it. 7/10

(keep in mind I completed the Ps3 version years ago) Alright so I only recommend this game for long time Tales fans who are up for a bit of bullshit. The main issues with the game come from its over complicated gearing system and its story.
The story falls short starting the second half (so bad that they completely redid the second half in the anime)
If you plan to play Berseria please play this game first as Berseria refs a lot from Zestiria and I feel as if you'll come to appreciate Zestiria more if you play in release order.
Zestiria's combat can be fun but it's horribly explained through Monoliths spread throughout the game.
After beating the first act of the game I recommend checking the battle book and reading up on how Weakness combos work and also to find out why Enemies will not take damage for a short amount of time after you drop a combo.
I love the Tales series with all my heart and I totally think this game works if you're willing to go into it with an open mind (and a patient one lol)
P.S
Some more things to mention are the 30fps cap which is fixed by a 60fps patch put out by the community, (may have issues on some systems: such as stuttering and npc's lagging it far below even 30fps)
and some weird crashes while loading a save for the first time after a PC reboot.

I found this to be a pleasant experience. I can't say it was great, but it certainly wasn't bad - and totally worth the time I invested. Be warned...the story takes a LONG time to really get you into it. Due to that, I would only really recommend playing this if you've played Berseria or plan on it. Otherwise, I feel it may leave you a little unsatisfied. All in all, enjoyable!

1/2 of a solid JRPG

1/2 sunk cost by the time you've blown 40+ hours on the game

100% a game chopped, screwed, and repurposed from the assets and plots of multiple rough drafts into the roughest draft of all:

TALES OF ZESTIRIA:

A great adventure story with plenty to do.

The storyline is surprisingly mature by the end, with deep implications for the characters. The music score is wonderful, with some perfect background tracks that really give a sweeping, grand scale to the game.

With challenges and multiple difficulty levels, cooking, collecting, and rare mobs to hunt down, there's something for everyone.

I really really tried to give this game a chance but after 12 hrs i just have to say i cant play much more of it, Im trying to do a hard run like i do in all tales games and i just cant do it. The enemies are about 25 lvls highers somehow and i can barely grind to get levels with the trash gear I have due to the normin stuff and the combining aspect of the game. Not to mention most of the chars are super bland. If you want something in the same universe just go play berseria.

Tales of Zestiria
-----------------------------
I have not reviewed this game yet, so its time we review this one, i'm a huge fan of the tales series.
------------------------------
Tales of Zestiria is one of the weaker entries of the Tales of series.
The story is its weakest point.
Characters can be fun, the world is a great one to explore and the soundtrack is also on point.
World exploration is great and the combat is the meat of the game.
Its fun doing crazy combo's to enemies.

This is still a solid Jrpg and a funb tales of game.
But does not live up to the expectations this franchise has.

Have fun playing Tales of Zestiria !

Oookay, I'm quite the sucker for jrpg and have been a Fan of the Tales of series ever since Tales of Symphonia was released for the Gamecube back in 2003, so I know what I'm talking about, That said, I just finished my second playthrough on chaos and now I'd like to say a few things:

1. The story feels raw and very much unfinished, though the characters are very much likeable, well, most of them
2. Combat system is quite fast-paced, just like Graces f and Berseria, but the companion AI is dumber than bread. To make this point clear; they are unable to dodge attacks properly, run straight into attacks, do not flee from incoming spells, use hidden artes to stop enemy spellcasters and lastly never defend. Also enemies never target you and keep running away from you.
3, I'm not sure what the whole deal with this equipment fusion thingy is, but I don't like it. I was very much into the Synthesis from Vesperia, I even did the Blacksmith thingy in Symphonia and usually I never turn down an opportunity to farm a few materials. but this,,, this is just a pain
4. On higher difficulties this Tales of title should always be played with a friend and never alone or you'll just get frustrated of the stupid AI constantly defusing and then dying, wasting all their BG and wrecking your Grade Score.
5. Using Roses and Dezels/Zaveids Lure Talent plus a dark bottle makes for more challenging battles than some Bosses. Also if you stun a boss while fused and do the whole Banish Blast + Mystic Arte Combo they die in seconds, Seconds! That is not how Boss Battles should go! I remember some Bosses in Tales of the Abyss on unknown where the party struggled to even do damage... especially Natalia with her very cool but very weak bows.

All in all it is very much a Clichée, but the Combat can be fun, though if you wanna be good at it you'll have to waste hours on fusing the right gear. Only buy it if you're really into the Tales of Series and if it's on sale.

One of the weaker entries in the Tales series, don’t get me wrong, despite its flaws Zesty is still a perfectly enjoyable game but it just can’t stand its ground when compared to the others.

The good stuff:

-Story is pretty cliché but it’s still enjoyable

-A lot of people mistake Sorey as this Jesus 2.0 type of guy who can do no evil but his character actually goes way deeper than that

-Zesty has more of an open world feeling than its predecessors

-The cast is VERY memorable and their interactions with each other are PHENOMENAL, I just can’t get enough of those goofballs!!!

-Opening song is a blast

-Skit faces are hilarious

-The soundtrack is amazing

The problems:

-Game is too damn complex for no good reason (don’t even get me started on the fusion system)

-The combat on this one is really unbalanced, for example, enemy mages can kill your whole party in seconds no matter how big the level gap between you and them is, problems like this get even worse on the higher difficulties

-Combat also relies too much on the armatization mechanic

-Rose ????

-Game has a lot of performance issues

-Zesty as a whole is way too grindy

Overall Zesty is still a solid experience so feel free to try it out if you want to get into Tales or if you like the franchise, just don’t go expecting another Symphonia or Vesperia.

This game was exactly what one would expect from a JRPG - for better and worse.

Within the first hour, the game tells you exactly what is going on and then never deviates from that once. A legendary warrior arises to strike down evil with almost no real complications or twists.

The only thing worse than a bad game is an unmemorable game. Sadly, I have forgotten every character except for Edna. Edna is great and I want every game to have an Edna.

There are many great things I'm enjoying about this game and I will certainly complete it: the music is great, some of the humour is wonderful, and I love the smooth cut scene to game play transitions.

However, this game has the worst battle system in any JRPG I have ever played and it ruins the whole game. It's clunky and confusing, and exacerbated by the endless battles. The plot is mediocre and certainly not for everyone, but is somewhat salvaged by the good(ish) characters.
Also, the keyboard & mouse controls are awful.

So... Tales of Zestiria is a complex game to review. On one hand, I really enjoyed the art, music, and most of the storyline too. I also liked most of the characters and their development, and I felt I was able to get through the game at a pretty good pace. Overall, a solid RPG experience that I enjoyed more than I disliked.

The reason why I'm not recommending this game, however, is because in order to enjoy the game I had to purchase the $20 adventurer pack that includes double XP and several other things that allowed me to go from level 21 at the beginning third of the game to about level 61 just by using items alone. It also essentially tripled my max HP with more DLC items, and gave me a ton of stat-boosting items that I used intermittently to fully heal my party at key points in the game.

I don't like the idea of a game only being enjoyable with a DLC pack. I tried to do without it when I first got Zestiria on the PS4, and I got stonewalled from the mind-numbing boredom of random encounters. This, with a baffling equipment enhancement system that eventually becomes more important than the levels you gain means that for anyone who didn't splurge on the DLC pack, you're probably going to have a bad time.

Complex review, I guess. Hope it makes sense. Overall, if you can afford the Adventurer's Pack DLC, I recommend doing so because it makes the game palatable. Otherwise, I would probably avoid this game due to frustration.

Tales of average

I've only played two Tales games so far. This one and Berseria. I loved the latter one and its dark story but I can't say many good things about this one. It's not a bad game, worth playing for jrpg fans when you already played all the better ones. This one is probably just average.

I found main character extremely generic and boring. Story too is nothing to be excited about. Cannot be compared to Berseria or other jrpg's like Final Fantasy. There are some good moments, some really good dialogues and there are times you'll laugh but mostly it's just generic stuff, generic characters, generic combat, generic story. Although mostly doesn't mean it's all generic. Some characters are more likable than other and I bet you'll find one or two character pretty fun.

The world you can explore is massive but it's pretty empty. Vast areas filled with monsters and nothing more, you just go to where you need to go killing monsters on the way. You see same repeating textures and assets all the time. It looks pretty at times and it looks completely dull most of the time.

There are cities but again neither their design or architecture stands out, again they look generic, standard buildings with generic npc's and some ai walking around. They feel empty and unimaginitive. I'd say it looks ok'ish, there are certainly worse offenders when it comes to dull environments *cough*Neptunia*cough*.

You'll be talking with people, learning new stuff related to the lore and story and while the lore is quite interesting and story has its good moments, it's nothing special, just ok.
Character interaction and story telling is done in three ways. Mostly in either 3D real time cut-scenes or in 2D style resembling visual novels. I really love the latter more. And best ones are obviously anime style cut-scenes, these are really beautiful and appear at important parts of the story.

The combat is something I don't like at all. But it's a matter of taste. I prefer turn based combat but I also hate it at the same time. Turn based combat is great for tougher enemies since it gives time to think and execute your strategy well by making well thought tactical choices. But it's annoying when fighting all those regular monster where you wait your turn just to click the same attack button and be done with it. That's why I really love FFXIII combat, it was a good middle-ground between active and turn based combat model.
Tales of Zestiria is more on an action side, there are still something resembling turns but the battles are active where you can run around and attack when you want. Enemies execute attacks every few seconds or so. But you need to react and make decisions quite fast and I don't like that. Besides this takes away the ability of tactical combat and leaves most of the combat for button mashing.
There are special moves of course and skills. Different party members have different fighting styles and the combat from visual perspective looks really cool.
You have plenty of weapons in your disposal and you can upgrade them.

The graphics are pretty from visual and technical standpoint, characters, their moves and everything else looks nice but as I mentioned there's too much repeating patterns and lack of creativity. Although 2D cut-scenes are beautifully drawn and it's a real pleasure to watch those. Same applies to anime cut-scenes, very nicely drawn and it captures your attention, probably the best part of the game.

Music is quite forgettable, it's ok and voice acting is pretty standard what you hear in jrpg's. Not bad not great either.

Overall an average jrpg. I'd say jrpg fans should play this after they've finished the better ones. And if you buy this do it on sale. Good thing is that Berseria is a much better game so I have some hope for the upcoming Tales game.

Pros
 • Pretty cut-scenes
 • Combat looks cool
 • It has some good moments

Cons
 • Average story
 • Confusing, fast, button mashing combat
 • Surroundings look dull

Play this game after Berseria was definitively one of the best decisions I made. because now I have: Empathy for the Universe (besides calling seraphs as malakin all the time), empathy for Edna and Zaveid, so I don't worry about some lacks the screenplay may have (and I started this game expecting the worst-confusing-stupid screenplay, but actualy I found it pretty great and playable), and finally because linear stories rules.

Zestiria is not bad, but is insanely long for no reason, I got to a point in the story where I was bored af. MC is such a bland character.

I wish I could give it a neutral score.

Go for Berseria instead.

Not a big fan of the fighting mechanic, but I came here after enjoying Berseria.
Main character is bit flat but characters around him is interesting.
If you just want to enjoy the Story of this arc you should get it.
And apparently this takes place 200 years after the event in Berseria.

Easily my least favourite Tales game, the story was weird, the characters were weird. I was so excited about it, tried to like it, and just did not enjoy anything about it. Not a single thing. This isn't a helpful review, this is just me griping about a series I used to love and haven't touched since the disappointment this game caused me.

Honestly? I tried to stick with this game but I found it just got really... dull. I couldn't bring myself to actually get interested in the plot as it was just so generic and deflated.

It starts out okay but after 13 hours it just doesn't seem to get going.

A fun JRPG with an expansive world and great soundtrack. It takes multiple hours before game play gets interesting as the game drip feeds you abilities that you only unlock after going out of your way to perform specific tasks that unlock them. These feel like they should have been there from the start but once you have them, combat becomes enjoyable and providing thought when encountering certain enemies.
The game's cast, though not as good as a fellow Tales of game, Berseria, is still a pretty good cast. Though like with abilities, it takes a bit long to develop any of these characters. This game does however retroactively makes Berseria a better game due to amount of connections to two games share. Because of this though I would wholeheartedly suggest playing Berseria before this one as playing the other way around would not do either game nearly as much justice.

Post game content is a tough challenge yet still an enjoyable time. Requires much more thought and item management than any other part of the game and a satisfying ending which could very well lead you to attempt a new game +.

Honestly it's a mix bag it's not terrible like everyone says it is but it's not good either
-Character interactions are good but that's nothing new for this series
-Ideas and concepts are good but executed poorly
-Story is lackluster and unfocused at times which makes it lose steam really fast
ı don't see any harm purchasing at half price or lower BUT If you want to try something similar ideas and concepts with better plot and execution go play Tales of Berseria

Let me begin by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the Tales series.

That being said, this entry to the series is a disappointment. I found the characters to be lackluster. No one was really all that interesting and what interesting facets that we did see were not really explored to their full potential. Also some of the reactions to situations are baffling and make no sense.

The battle mechanics are not as good as other entries in the series. The merging mechanics, while interesting, leaves you with fewer players on the field which then limits what you have at your disposal.

To top it all off, there are some major plot holes. Things that just don't add up. The timelines in the series are all over the place and constantly contradicting themselves. This might not be that big a deal if they weren't constantly trying to give you the idea that long lost powers are coming back... when it's barely been 20 years. If you play Tales of Bersaria, which came out after Zestiria, and is technically a prequel to this game, then there are things that make even less sense in this one. One could argue that is the fault of Bersaria, but as Bersaria is a great game all around with a pretty cohesive and well thought out story I will lay the blame on Zestiria which already has enough flaws.

The game isnt so terrible that it's not worth playing, but it's not worth paying more then maybe $15-$20 for.

After a very long time of thinking, due to the negative reviews I was afraid of buying Zestiria. I didn't like Xillia-2 and by the looks I could not decide if purchasing Zestiria would be worth it. But now, I finally did it.

And I was so stupid for relying so much on reviews!
I do not have a single issue within this game, and it is very enjoyable!
Definitely get it if you are a Fan of the Tales Of-Series, but even so it's a good buy!
The music is great, the story as far as I can tell, interesting. I like this game a lot.

The best Tales of game I've played. Much better than Symphonia and Vesperia. But compare to other JRPG's, I cannot say this game is a masterpiece. As a matter of fact, it doesn't have to be a masterpiece.

I've enjoyed my time while playing this game. Yes it has it's downsides but upsides can negate downsides easily and this game have lots of upsides.

Recommended to JRPG lovers. Just do not set your expectations too high and you can highly likely enjoy this game.

I personally found this game very buggy, and there were many inconveniences that made me find this game intolerable. Being punished for wanting to move around in any direction other that forward is quite the bother to me. Oftentimes the menu glitched, causing me to switch between one keyboard scheme, and another. (spoilers for a section of the game)
The fetch quest that occurred around 2/3rds of the way through the game was really annoying, and it felt like a big waste of time.
Even though i got the game on sale, i don't think even that was worth it.

Equipment and fusion is very confusing. Memorising all the martial arts paths for every character is a pain and takes time to get used to it.

The game is fun overall. The music is nice.

The story itself is however very confusing. As I am nearing the end/climax in my first playthrough, I can't get any more confused by the what is happening. The delivery on most of the cutscenes is probably the worst of any of the Tales series, some(?) subplots are such a convoluted mess. The dead silence between each line in the cutscenes ruins it all.

Would I recommend?
I don't know. I just want it to end and move on to the next game. Probably I won't play the post-game.

I read negative reviews about this game and decided to purchase it anyway. I think it's an AMAZING game!! I'm not sure why everyone was so down on it. Funny cast, great art and cut scenes. The battle system is a little primitive compared to Berseria but hey, Berseria came AFTER Zesteria (It's amazing how many people aren't aware of this). I love the battle changes they made in Berseria and hope that future games continue to improve on it.

Tales of Zestiria was my first entry to the Tales of franchise, and since then I have played other tales games, but i particularly love this one the best.

- I really enjoyed the look of the game , everything looks vibrant and alive.
- Character designs are great, and the personalities of the characters are just a blast, they will keep you entertained guaranteed. Seriously the character interactions in this tales game are sooo good.
- The soundtrack is fantastic, specially the trial themes.
- The story that they present you with is that of a young man that becomes the sheperd to qualm the malevolence that has spread through the continent by the lord of calamity. While the story is very cliche, the way they present it to you, and how the main character Sorey, deals with the plot along with the rest of the party makes it very enjoyable and memorable at the end.
- The combat can be enjoyable... but you are going to be fighting the camera 50% of the time. Its very simplistic, each direction gives a basic combo, and the artes you can use get unlocked by leveling up, The fun part of this game comes in the form of the skill system. Basically every peace of equipment you get has 4 slots in which a skill will be found. Each skill gives you different bonuses and you can fuse them to achieve new skills that may o may not be totally broken.. but its cool... if you have the patience and time to actually grind them... like i did... i swear its fun..
- The is a bunch of side content that you can do aside from the main story, including boss fights which are pretty chalenging, side stories that help world building, and a post game dungeon with cameo battles in it. But sadly there is no mini games like in other entries of the franchise, there is no colisseum (though i guess there are crucibles that kind of make up for it?? ), ... it felt like they just didnt have enough time to finish it... what could have been..

Its a great experience all in all, though in comparison to other games in the franchise falls a bit short, its worth your time, i found the whole game a very fun experience, yes, even the battle system.. Definitely if you like the Tales of games, and you like your character study types of games, give it a chance!

I've been trying to get into the Tales series and I've enjoyed them for the most part but I did not enjoy Zestiria too much. It's a visually pleasing game and I think the world itself is nice to explore but the overall story is not very different from most other RPGs. A human is chosen as its shepherd to bring harmony to both humanity and seraphim alike by defeating the Lord of Calamity. A traditional tale of light versus darkness. The gameplay was fine but pretty complicated to work with. There are so many tutorials around the weapon combinations, spirit chain, and armatization. It becomes a lot to remember and that just made the battle system overly complicated. On top of that, the enemies felt pretty tanky and tough to take down. The characters were likeable and I enjoyed the interactions between them during the skits. I feel like this game would have benefited more if all the characters were explored in more depth then just Sorey's struggle to become the shepherd. It was a good game but the least favourite Tales game I've played.

I usually play JRPGs for the story, it's the main drawing point for me.
The story of Zestiria here is just really bland. There might have been a chance to save it fun characters, but that went wrong as well. Specially the main character is awful.

The fighting is solid, but overly complicated. Sure, after 8 hours I don't really grasp the concept, but I think I got the basics down. Let's say the tutorial is really awful by bashing you with walls of text (sometimes with the same over & over again).
The real depth comes from preparing and combining equipment, so it's a lot of time spent in menues. Then upgrading and unlocking via gaining exp. It's a form of grinding that I don't like. Grind for gear with random extras and grind for so long until you get that part that you want. No, thank you.

What I found lovely and soothing was running around, having some random encounters, enjoying the wonderful music. It can be very relaxing. Then there were a few boss fights that were sorta fun (I'm sure there would be more to come. But I don't play 10 hours filler for 2 decent fights).

As far as I've read, the story seems to be agreed on as rather bland. There are lots of people that enjoyed the characters. Music is great, battles are complicated for no reason (except for those who like to stumble around in preparation). There are good bits to be found, but I wouldn't recommend this game.

One last thing. The 3D characters are great and well made. I don't understand why they went with drawn anime sequences. The game while in 3D usually features soothing, orchestrated music, but switches to J-Rock for anime stuff. Those two parts didn't fit together imo. I would have preferred if the stuck with the 3D models.

I love JRPGs, and although this is very pretty with a great anime style and fun characters, the gameplay leaves much to be desired. Maybe consider buying this game if you've run out of other JRPGs play. It's not all bad, I enjoyed my play through but have enjoyed similar games much more:

-Pros-
* Feels like you're playing an anime
* Gorgeous style
* Likeable characters
* Nice voice acting with good, often funny dialogue
* Open world

-Cons-
* Unnecessarily complex battle/skills system with walls of text to absorb from the start, the system is not introduced gradually
* Fight mechanics feel very slow and clunky, moves are not easy to pull off and doesn't feel smooth
* Weak and often confusing story line
* No character development/backgrounds for some of the main chars
* Travelling around can be a nightmare at times as teleporters are disabled much of the time - this seems to depend on where you are with the main story line and happens throughout the entire game
*Map is not useful at all - there's no way to tell how to get from one place to another easily, and there are so many different names of dungeons/fields/cities it's difficult to remember what routes to take even if you've already done it once
* Some of the achievements require you to play through the game 5 times which is ridiculous
* No quest tracking system, instead you have to rely on another character in your party to give you info - they give you hints about what you should be doing, but these hints can be really unhelpful - i had to look up guides on the internet a few times to start making progress

I love the Tales series, but Zestiria is honestly one of the worst entries. A poorly built world and incoherent plot, a frustrating at times battle system, and some confusing systems choices leave it as an overall unsatisfying experience.

Story and Pacing:

- Spotty storytelling and seeming switch in the direction of the game's tone and plot after Rose joins. Almost like the game had two different drafts and was changed mid-development.

- Plenty of irrelevant political plots in the background that the game fails to make relevant to the player or engaging on their own right. Your journey is totally separate to the actual interesting stuff occurring in the game.

- Huge mid-game lull in any story developments during the trials arc.

Characters

- Likeable enough, but the game does little to really develop a lot of them or make them truly 3D characters. Characters remain mostly static and inoffensive throughout the game.

- Development takes too long for the main characters. The core central theme is the idea of finding your 'answer', which is essentially your resolve or your conviction to do what you believe. For Rose it's the idea of never letting somebody shoulder the burden alone, for Sorey it's to save everybody no matter the cost etc. It's a nice idea but most of the game is spent 'discovering' the answer, and then they're only really tested in the last 5% of the game.

Systems and why they suck

- Random RNG equipment is system fails to unlock combat in a meaningful way.

- Needing to grind to get good skills on your characters as opposed to a natural progression as in Vesperia.

- Overworld skills are done okay but nothing special.

Combat

- Poor camera if you enter battle in a small condensed hallway.

- Over reliance on the game's main mechanic - Armatization. Characters when not armatized have really shallow movesets that makes them feel obviously incomplete and lacking in depth.

- Boss mechanics are far too punishing if you are not armatized - frequent one shots and AI frequently getting one shot from bad positioning.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Zestiria definitely ranks among one of the worst Tales games in the series. It is not necessarily a bad game, but it is thoroughly mediocre in almost every aspect. It does several things to an average standard, and then several more things to a poor standard. I think it is worth playing because it's not an awful game, but it is definitely not a game for everybody and I would not recommend it unless you are a hardcore fan of the series. For everybody else, just watch the anime.

This is by far not the one of the best Tales of games but its still enjoyable! The battle system is not the best of the series and the story has a TON of holes BUT its still not a bad game. I enjoyed completing this, learning more about the world and its characters. The Zestiria universe is also pretty big. Tales of Berseria is a prequel, theres an anime and a manga series that fills some of the plot holes. Honestly I wouldn't hate to see more from this universe but seeing how Zestiria was panned by the Tales of community, I don't think we'll see anything else come from this.

Play it if you want, I enjoyed it. Or you can skip it and just watch tales of Zestiria the X to get the story and connection to Berseria.

Maybe you would call me a Tales sucker just because it is a Tales game, kind of like some do will C.O.D or our beloved adventures in the world of Tamriel.
Anyway I just love this game and story at first on my first PS3 playthrough it got me a bit annoyed as I was new to this totally new way of playing Tales but I soon got used to that and loved every moment of the game that i bought it again for PC!! and I love it just as much here too. Only gripes I have are the updating armour and weapons much like with Berseria. Much Preferred the games before this in regards too items, kind of like Vesperia but I guess it stopped you selling those most important items!. If you want to fall in love with Tales before playing I suggest Tales Of Vesperia non-definitive if you are in the west.

A very enjoyable jrpg.
Deep and entertaining combat system, great characters, interesting story and lore.
The only flaws, are the 30 fps lock and, in general, the graphic engine. Some environments are very obsolete looking, like an early 2000's game.

A must play if you have played Tales of Berseria. The lore and world are fleshed out, the protaganist is an interesting subject of conflicting wills. I played Berseria first, and am glad I did... this shows me some other aspects to that world - though, I will admit, some things now don't make sense. I won't go into spoilers, but it seems like roles are somewhat reversed between the 2 games. The mechanics are hit and miss, it can be tough to follow side quests unless you pay careful attention and speak to your companion - the overall quest can be a little obscure if you don't follow hints... but still a very intriguing game for me at least.

I honestly dislike this game a lot at this point, not enough to hate it, but dislike it a lot. Far too many glaring personality problems in each character, really drags down my expectations in this game over and over again.

Especially Rose. I just wish I can switch her out for something else but god, I cannot.

It wasn't a bad game. I did love my journey through it, but it's no Berseria; that's for sure.

People in the Tales community will tell you to play Zestiria first and then, Berseria. I wouldn't beg to differ, but the references from Berseria in Zestiria kind of kept me going through the game; if not for that, I probably wouldn't care much about the world of Zestiria.

Besides that, this game's characters are pretty okay, nothing too overdone or fancy. However, it kind of feels like there's something missing throughout Sorey's journey. Maybe it's because I'm too attached to Berseria, but Berseria delivered the 'journey' vibe pretty well by adding in the ship segments.

The gameplay mechanics sure could do better; the combat system isn't really all that pretty but I can see the improvement they made in Berseria.

My only complaint would be that this game crashes a lot - although not during important fights or scenes ( that would probably make me hit the 'No' button for this review.

Anyway, give this game a try; HOWEVER, PLEASE PLAY BERSERIA MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE !

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this game as a fan of the Tales series. It's very clearly trying to be Xenoblade Chronicles with its overworld (one section looks a LOT like Gaur Plains...) and battle style, but it only manages to overcomplicate things and make large barren maps that are simply AWFUL to walk through. Apparently, this game is a prequel to Beseria, so speed through it if you want some context. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

I recommend playing this game only after playing Vesperia. Please don't spoil your gameplay with Berseria beforehand. Vesperia-Zestiria-Berseria.

This game improve a lot on the previous title being Vesperia.
The fighting mechanics became faster paced. More epic, more effects and the skills are really useful.
I haven't found missable sidequests. And those are quite easy to find so this is a huge plus compared to the previous title which made it frustrating.
The animations, sound of the game really push it a notch above and doesn't feel old.
It runs without crashes, but the frame rate is locked at 30fps which I find it odd.

So lets go onto the gameplay of this game.
They love mazes and small riddles like the previous title being Vesperia. And some maps feels really long for nothing, endless confusion as each areas are copy paste without distinct features.
The game use the typical tropes but do develop them further then just being Tales of Tropes.
The skits are a huge upgrade from Vesperia, the animations movies are really good and enjoyable. You even have the side character appearing next to you when you trigger an event instead of having just text to portray them.
Having someone next to you to track the quests makes the world less empty even when they don't do anything except when there is a combat or an event. As customization make it relevant to be shown not only during combat but outside of combat.

This is the only game out of the vesperia and berseria to feature a side story DLC. Which adds depth to the characters of the game. Although this DLC is mostly going through a maze it is nothing more but welcome.

Overall a nice upgrade of Vesperia with a good story like Vesperia.

More like Tales of How to Port a Game with the Least Amount of Effort Possible.
After spending way too much time trying to use community fixes, which shouldn't even be necessary, to at least make this game perform halfway decently on a machine that runs far more resource intensive games without problems, the game still crashes randomly and without any rhyme or reason. I'm all for giving a developer money to show there is a feasible PC market for them, but Bamco has consistently shown they simply don't care, as every one of their games brought out on PC have been substandard at best and downright unplayable at worst. If I ever get around to playing this game again, it'll be with a PS3/4 emulator cuz at least that will have better odds of making this game run the way it should on PC.

Shame on you, Bamco, for forcing your fans to clean up your mess. I won't be supporting you guys any further, that's for certain.

I think I enjoyed this game a little too much since I spent 100+ hours to beat it >_< I haven’t played a Tales game in a decade (Tales of Symphonia), so I really wanted to see what this game was all about. I love that there is so much to do in this game. The cooking system, the character skits, the optional dungeons, and optional bosses. And the armatization system is really cool. I love it all <3.

I still haven't even touched upon New Game + and the Land Lord buffs. So much equipment customization...

Tales of Zestiria ended up being fun to play, with characters that you will enjoy traveling & fighting with.
For a 2015 title, it isn't worth paying full price, rather wait for at least a 50% or higher price reduction.

Compared to previous Tales Of games that I played (Vesperia - Abyss - Graces f- Xillia 1 and Symphonia), I wouldn't call it childish in the least (Graces f fits abit into that mold).

The game is easier to play compared to Symphonia, which is sometimes unforgiving.

Storywise, it is inferior compared to the excellent Abyss & Vesperia storylines, but still an enjoyable tale.

Music is where it shines the most though, on par with 4 Tales Of games that I played(excluding Graces f, was not as memorable).

The Story DLC 'Additional Chapter: Alisha's Story' is only worth buying on special, not worth the full price due to a frustrating final dungeon design and a minor cliffhanger. Story though, excluding the minor cliffhanger, is good - since it takes place after the main game has ended. It is interesting to see how things panned out.

i havent played much yet but as a tales fan i can assure you this game has the same quality you find in other tales games ,the battle system can use some fixes and it is a little wanky to say the least ,
the game has many similarities to berseria except that berseria is superior in every way specially the battle system ,
the story is top notch and the quests seem engaging and fun

I can't for the life of me understand why people like this game. One of the worst in the TALES series. Sorey is a one dimensional unlikable main character, and the game does not seem to understand it's tone at all. Is it a comedy? Is it serious? It flip flops between the two with no grace at all.

Play Berseria of Symphonia, don't waste your time.
