Hey, Constructors!

Welcome to our third development update for The Constructors! In the past we talked about the planning process that each building has to go through before entering the actual construction stage. Today on the other hand, we’d like to give you some more insight into the building stages themselves.

Similarly to how we approached The Tenants, with The Constructors we’re again working on a game that doesn’t exactly fit gameplay-wise with any already existing games. So, like with our previous game, we’re doing a lot of prototyping and going back and forth with some design decisions, all the time striving to make the gameplay deliver on the unique premise of the game.

Initially we were going for a more plan-and-watch approach with The Constructors’ gameplay, but over time we implemented more and more actual agency and control into the building process itself.

Our goal is to have the player make do with what they had prepared for themselves in the earlier stages, like construction companies would have to do in real life. What that means is that oftentimes you’ll have logistic issues to solve in your buildings that you can’t easily remake without wasting a lot of in-game time and resources.

So what do you actually do in the game after you’ve finished your blueprints, and before the units are ready for their new owners to move into?

First off, you’ll be managing your company’s workforce and assigning them to different constructions, which should be easier in the early stages of the game when you’re still working on a single building plot at a time. Using your transport trucks, you’ll be delivering all the required resources needed to start building your creations. You’ll be controlling both your on-ground workers as well as all the machines that you own or currently rent. Like in any RTS game, in The Constructors you can freely select whichever units you want and assign them to various tasks that are available. And the available tasks change over time, as the construction progresses.

Taking under consideration the expertise of your employees and machines, you’ll need to manage who does what and in which order. Making the best use of what you have available will be crucial to maximize your profits and minimize the building time and waste of resources.

Thank you for your time, that’d be all for this month’s devlog. If you have any questions, please feel free to hop into the comments section below this post and ask away!
