GESCHICHTE
„Hereinspaziert, hereinspaziert, sehr verehrtes Publikum! Heute haben wir eine Geschichte auf Lager!“

Abby ist eine Zirkusartistin, die gegen ihren Willen gefangen gehalten wird. Tagsüber unterhält sie die Zirkusbesucher und nachts wird sie in einen Käfig gesperrt, in dem sie von ihrer Freiheit träumt. Eines Tages flieht sie aus dem Zirkus und zieht los, um die zauberhafte Märchenwelt zu erkunden.

Doch Freiheit hat ihren Preis. So muss Abby sich den Gefahren stellen, die überall auf der Welt lauern. Denn die mittelalterliche Welt ist von Krieg gezeichnet, ebenso wie ihre armen, hungernden Einwohner. Einer von ihnen ist Tonda, ein erbarmungsloser Halsabschneider, der Abby über reißende Flüsse, durch Räuberlager und an Fallen vorbei hinterherjagt.

Begleitet wird die Geschichte vom Puppenspieler Jack. Mit erzählerischem Talent gibt er Abbys Geschichte wieder, während er die Fäden der Marionette fest in der Hand hält.

Wem kann Abby noch trauen? Wird sie einen Weg in die Freiheit finden? Kann Abby die Fäden des Schicksals selbst in die Hand nehmen?

Man erlebt eine Geschichte mit märchenhafter Atmosphäre, wunderschönen Farben und sehr passender Musik. Man muss im Laufe der Geschichte kleinere Rätsel lösen. Diese sind aber nicht all zuschwer und auch das Gameplay ist genau genug, auch wenn es an manchen Stellen etwas schwammig ist. Ich spielte es mit einem Gamepad. Die Spielzeit würde ich auf rund 4h schätzen.

Große Empfehlung.

Ein freies Leben, das ist was sich Abby wünscht. Komplett frei von allen Fäden und Tyrannen.
In A Juggler's Tale begleiten wir Abby, eine Zirkusartistin ????, auf ihrer Reise den Fängen des Erzählers zu entkommen und wortwörtlich alle Fäden zu lösen.
Die Welt da draußen ist Erbarmungslos und versucht alles Abby zu stoppen.
Folge dem Erzähler während du langsam anfängst deine eigene Geschichte zu schreiben und lernst ohne Fäden zu laufen!
Wundervolle Atmosphäre und eine spannende Umgebung passen immer perfekt zum Geschehen und die Spielmechanik macht wirklich Spaß.
Rundum ein sehr spannender und schöner Sidescroller.

Ein sehr schön gestaltetes Spiel mit einer schönen Geschichte und Aufmachung und ein tolles Beispiel dafür, das Videospiele auch eine Kunstform sind!

Es reißt innovationstechnisch sicher keine Bäume aus. Das muss es aber auch nicht. Der hübsche Sidescroller mit Rätseln sowie Schleicheinlagen überzeugt anders. Man bekommt tolle Bilder, schöne Musik, einen stimmigen, sehr guten Erzähler und bitterböse Wendungen.

Es ist ein Märchen durch und durch: Neben dem hervorragenden Mittelalter-Soundtrack, der mich bereits im Menü verzaubert, hat mir vor allem die Art und Weise imponiert, wie das Spiel seine Geschichte erzählt. Wie wir es vielleicht von einer Märchenaufführung kennt.

kaleidoscube ist hier ein wunderschönes Spiel gelungen, das einem den Nachmittag oder Abend versüßen kann.
Ein besonderes Highlight war die unvergleichliche wobbleness der Moorleiche, die man aus dem Wasser zieht.
Sagt Bescheid, wenn ihr einen Fotografen für diese oder ähnliche besondere Momente braucht.

Wirklich schönes und liebevolles Spiel, dass aus seinem Artstil das Maximum an Atmosphäre und Schönheit rausholt. Schön erzählt, gut vertont, mit zwei Stunden etwas kurz aber es hat sich gelohnt! :)

I loved to play A Jugglers Tale. I love the look, the story, the characters, the details ...
If you are searching for a story driven game with a super cute main character you will love it too.
Bonus points if you love to get your adventure told by a wonderful narrator.

Amazing game! The art and storytelling is wonderful. It made me feel like a kid again. The feeling of entering a storybook type of setting with a narrator narrating your every move. The story was very compelling and the game's background and scenery drew me in. Really excellent game. I feel that my time playing was well spent!!!
I also took my time to have a perfect run of this game with all the achievements and I feel that it is worth my money.

In the puzzle platformer A Juggler's Tale the player steps into the shoes of the string puppet Abby who sets out on a great escape from the circus where she has been held captive as an artiste.

Reminescent of puzzle platformers like Inside, Limbo, Little Nightmares and Monochroma but with a small new twist due to the puppets strings that can work both as an asset or a disadvantage so it often plays a central role in how how to solve puzzles.

The game is narrated by a rather whimsical puppeteer who partially comments the story with something that propably best can be characterized as nursery rhymes.

Very beautiful game with great ambience

Pretty short and a bit overpriced but overall a great experience.

short little game, but with bombastic audio, visual and gameplay. extremely fun to play, fun achievements to hunt down. I wish it wouldve been longer as I loved every bit of the game. Defo 10/10

A Juggler's Tale is a story-driven platforming game that incorporates basic puzzles to solve (the solutions to which are mostly obvious, but two required me to think/play around for maybe 15 minutes each to figure them out). Overall, the game has a nice style/atmosphere to it, and was enjoyable to play. On rare occasions the controls were a bit janky, but were far from gamebreaking. The story has a nice message to it even with its sinister tones throughout, and the pacing felt even. The game took me about 2 hours to complete plus another hour to get the remaining achievements.

In general, I enjoyed this game for what it is - pretty, simple, and quick with an engaging storyline. I personally think the price is too high given the game's length, but it is worth a playthrough if you can get it on sale.

I cannot get over how truly gorgeous this game is. The art, the music, the story, all of it!
I played the demo a while back and as so excited to play the full game. I was greatly impressed and highly recommend it to all.

It does have a few kinks, I wish the throw mechanic was a bit more consistent (played with controller on PC), and I kind of wish intractable strings would highlight slightly or something. Otherwise the game play is smooth and just the right amount of challenging without being frustrating.

Amazing job dev team, cannot wait to see what you create next!

This is a fun side-scroller reminiscent of games like Little Nightmares and Inside. It features beautiful scenery and feelsy music alongside a fun children's story.

The only downside was the incredibly short game length which only took me 90 minutes to complete. I'm all for supporting indie game devs but $18 for 90 minutes is pushing it. I'd recommend catching this one on sale.

Don't read too much into the reviews if you don't wanna get spoilers, I did it and got mad at myself lol

This is a very pretty game with a nice story. I really enjoyed the music.
The controls are super simple and the puzzles are fairly easy to solve.
Took me less than 2 hours to finish so I wish it would have been a bit longer because I did have a good time playing through it.

8/10 - Story was well written. Visuals were beautiful. Music was amazing.

This game was so wonderful to play and I had a blast playing it. Story was well done, the narration and interactions kept me smiling the whole time. There were a couple puzzle points that were a little frustrating to get through, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed this game and would recommend supporting this company and get the game at full price.

A Juggler's Tale is a very short, but innovative little gem that oozes charm right from the menu screen. From its variety of picturesque settings, impressive rhyming narration and sinister twist on childhood fairy-tales, this is a must play for Indie lovers of puzzle and adventure titles.

Story

The narrator in A Juggler's Tale only speaks in rhymes, utilising a familiar and friendly premise to capture players' attention. This purposeful resemblance to fairy-tales is obvious right from the beginning but combined with its Tim Burton styled graphics and faceless characters, it exudes the perfect concoction of uneasiness.

The protagonist is a young girl named Abby. She is a string puppet and kept locked away by the circus ringmaster, until she is needed to complete her sole task of entertaining audiences. One day, Abby manages to escape and is suddenly thwart into a grim world where everything and everyone is seemingly set on causing her failure. She is relentlessly chased by the ringmaster’s thug named Tonda and has to face numerous obstacles with the odds stacked against her. The narrative explores metaphors surrounding the strings that hold her back, can she ever be freed of them? Can she change her path? It is a whimsical but compelling story about empowerment, hope and the desire for freedom whilst showcasing how beautiful and dark reality can be.

Gameplay

A Juggler's Tale is a puzzle adventure game with light platforming elements. Players can interact with objects by pushing them, picking up and throwing items. Movement is redolent of 2D platformers, whilst the game environments have 3D elements. I did not find the puzzles themselves to be difficult nor overly simple, but logical. If I did become stuck, it did not take long to figure out what to do, as the mechanics are very straightforward. However, what I did find quite unique was the concept of puppet strings. They quite literally hold you back from moving forward, if something overhead is blocking them, you cannot pass. I found this to be quite clever as it was both physical and metaphoric.

There is a mixture of chase, puzzle and stealth scenes. All are quite forgiving as I noticed the narrator frequently giving a small hint if I took too long in a certain area. Each segment feels fresh and seamlessly flows between chapters.

Game length
The game is quite short, I played at a leisurely pace, and it took me approximately 3 hours to finish it. Those who are puzzle connoisseurs may even finish it before the 2-hour mark. Considering the games story, excellent pacing and combination of differing elements, I thought it ended on a high note, without adding tedious unnecessary scenes just to prolong game time. It only focuses on the main plot; thus, I think the short game length is adequate. I especially enjoyed the ending, it felt an excellent conclusion for each character, also utilising the string mechanics once more. I did not perceive the lack of playtime to be a con and would not wish for it to be extended. Furthermore, I failed to find any aspect of the game to be negative, hence my lack of a cons list. Perhaps the price is a bit too high for my liking, but the quality is palpable.

Graphics & Sound

Upon launching this game, I was impressed at its beautiful art style, the contrast between the gorgeous vibrant settings and the condescending, hyperbolic tone of the narrator was done brilliantly. For such a short game, there was a vast array of unique environments, from a ravaging open sea, a calm picturesque countryside to a dimly lit forest overrun with spider webs. The graphics exude a gothic aesthetic, seeming to have been inspired by the likes of Tim Burton but maintain their vibrant beauty, truly manifesting in their obscurity.

Similar to the graphics, the audio is just as impactful. The menu screen plays an overtly cheery tune, reminiscent of exaggerated circus themes and was actually quite catchy. The voiced narration was also notable with every single line in the game being rhymed which came together extremely well. I thought the narrator’s changes in tone were portrayed brilliantly and were purposefully uncomfortable in some more poignant scenes. The sound effects and music in other areas were just as memorable. These elements of the game were by far the most standout feature, giving it a unique edge over other titles.

Conclusion

A Juggler's Tale is an impressive adventure puzzler, excelling in its beautiful visuals and gothic undertones. Featuring a rhyming narrator redolent of children's storybooks, but with an eerie, mysterious twist. Highly recommended for fans of the genre but consider its short playtime before purchase.

8/10 - Fun story. Beautiful scenery. Great Narration and a wonderful atmosphere/audio.

This game was an absolute delight. Although it was short I'd recommend it at full price. The story was enjoyable, the audio was phenomenal and the narration had me smiling cheek to cheek. It was comical & adorable. Short and sweet. A 2 hour journey for £13 seems worth it to me. I would happily pay for this again if they released a different story in the same style.
