Absolute Empfehlung.

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders

Solltest du dennoch Hilfe brauchen schaue mal hier rein.
https://www.adventurespiele.net/9891/AgathaChristieABC.pdf

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders

Detective Adventure from 2016.

The ABC Murders is an adventure and investigation game adapted from Agatha Christie's classic novel. The player embodies the famous private detective Hercule Poirot in this mysterious adventure game. (Editor)

The story remains close to the novel from 1936. Actually, the Belgian gentleman with hat and mustache wanted to retire in London.
But....
Scotland Yard needs your help hunting down a serial killer. A puzzle-filled detective game about finding a serial killer. The puzzles are made up of dialogue and mechanics puzzles. The dialogue puzzles based on conversations, investigations and securing evidence are relatively easy because you have enough specifications and if you can't figure it out you can try it out as you like. The Mechank puzzles are trickier. Although they all have a logical structure, they are sometimes quite difficult, but all can be solved by thinking or trying. Should you still need help, take a look here.
https://www.adventurespiele.net/9891/AgathaChristieABC.pdf
This is in German but in English there are also solutions on the web.
In addition, there is the search for clues and clues and of course many conversations with various people. I also used the help three times because I wanted to save myself time, because you often have to try something out even though you already know the solution. Just not exactly how.

The crime thriller is very good and of course I read it when I was a child, of course that I couldn't remember everything, so I was pleased to have another good novel in front of me. Playing these afterwards was very entertaining. Hence a clear recommendation from me.

This is an interesting point and click adaptation of the novel by Agatha Christie. Therefore, some small facts have been changed for simplicity but since Christie was a superior storyteller the story of the game is still excellent. Since some of the riddles were hard to solve you really had to use your little gray cells.

Zusammengefasst:

Einzelspieler: 7/10
Grafik: 8/10
Musik: 9/10
Steuerung: 9/10

Poor Poirot; An interesting enough take on a tried and true classic whodunnit that could be so much more.

This game is sadly clunky and sluggish. Interacting with this point n click can be a tedious chore full of unwelcome delays and unwanted reactions. The alerts/popups of your actions and successes can become comically delayed. Some of the fringe branches in the dialogue tree seem to be lacking leaves so to speak. The game gets more clunky and borderline glitchy at the worst time when your are building towards the climax. And the general loading and flow interruptions issues throughout really compound to ruin the most important moments at the end. The otherwise spectacular presentation gets eventually bogged down by the same issues that bog down your gameplay experience.

But.

It still does enough right. It is still an interesting take on a detective game with great ideas. Observations, clue gathering, and piecing things together is quite satisfying in the various ways they let you do it all. Some of the ideas in this game really felt good. Even though the game stumbles, crawls, and drags its proverbial feet on the way to each puzzle; they're good when you get there. You get a sense of accomplishment and feel like a detective. You feel like you solved something. I really am left wondering how well this would have worked if I was unfamiliar with the mystery though. Even knowing it I had fun. I still found myself genuinely curious on how each step would play out even though I knew how it should. The game presented a unique enough approach that I appreciated travelling a path I was familiar with. Like I mention, I felt like I was a detective and I felt like I had to earn the solutions. Even though I knew the ending. All the creative liberty choices they made fit perfectly too. No harm, no foul on the extra stuff to make it a video game experience.

On top of the murder mystery itself, the game has a great art direction. The visuals and voice work are great. Simple but wholly unique. It really is a shame that the user interaction was so horrendously bad. A more fluid experience combined with the positives could've made this game a classic way of telling a classic story. End of the day I recommend it, but my oh my is it rough around the edges. I enjoyed the presentation but it was frustratingly bad experience at times.

An acquired taste that is best sampled at a discount. I appreciate the ambition and even after experiencing the bad, still willingly like it. Thumb up in my book.

Am a huge series fan with David Suchet. Wish they could make the supporting characters look like their series counterparts bit more, Hastings looks ridiculous, and that pout, jaysis...So far so good. Puzzles are easy enough. Am not a huge fan of toon shader but I've just started playing so haven't gotten tired of it. If it's on sale worth buying if you're familiar with the great detective.

A must-play for people who like solving mysteries

I really enjoy mystery stories, especially those of Agatha Christie. I especially like it when I am able to work out the clues and solve the crimes before the final reveal myself.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2774400009

Someone decided to make that into a game and it really works. This work does an exceptionally good job of gamefying playing the role of Hercule Poirot in one of his most famous mysteries. I was really surprised by how well it worked for the most part and I felt exceptionally satisfied when I was able to do exactly what I love to do most in mysteries, namely recognize the clues and solve the case.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2774400184

The game isn't exceptionally long; you could probably finish it over a weekend but it delivers a very solid experience and will be far more memorable than any number of games which you will play for much longer. (It also often goes on sale with a 90% discount so if you don't want to buy it yet, wishlist it and buy it then.

There is a built-in hint system. I can't really review that because I didn't use it but it was good to know it was there if I needed it.

Graphics

It has a very nice, cell-shaded look which nailed what a Poirot game needs to get right, namely make you feel like you are in interwar England enjoying a life of restrained elegance (a nice change from my own overcrowded and somewhat chaotic residence.)

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2774399097

The one downside to the graphics is that some of the human animations are a bit stiff and I immediately recognized that the devs did NOT use motion capture for most of the movement... but that's a minor issue.

It's not a gory game so if you want that... well become a better person.

Sound

The music is just about perfect. It really set the mood for a Poirot mystery flawlessly. The voice acting is often a bit stiff for the side characters besides Poirot himself which actually matches up pretty well with the somewhat stiff movement of the characters.

As for Poirot himself, his voice acting was just about flawless except that to me he always sounded a bit Austrian as opposed to Belgian... maybe it's just me.

Final Score: 10/10

That score doesn't meant the game is perfect and beyond improvement; it means that if I were a teacher grading it, I would give it an A+

I felt both unusually happy and far more mentally active than usual playing this game (I had to get up and pace sometimes) so I can easily recommend this game as worth the money and more importantly, worth the time that you will put into it. On sale for $1.50 as it sometimes is, it's absolutely a steal.

Only if you're a fan of the french accent and Agatha Christie. Everything is too linear and narrow to really provide much of a challenge. Knowing the right things to say is the only real difficulty and that's not a good thing since it can largely be left up to intepretation. You get some floating clues on the current state of the person but that is also left up to interpretation. Decent story. buy on sale

I really hate giving this game a bad review, because I kind of enjoyed it, but if you're not a die hard Agatha Christie fan, this game might be a pain to play. The story is good (but I think it's better to just buy the book; it's also a cheaper option, too), but very short. I managed to finish it in 6 hours, and don't really want to play again, even though I love getting all achievements I'm not going to commit to multiple playthroughs.
As much as I love puzzles, the ones in this game are either too easy, or don't make any sense. The dialogs annoyed me at times; not being able to skip some of them was a pain, too. Also there's really no room for failure in this game - you can win or win. Or get an achievement for being a donkey, but that's about it.
It's not a bad game, but I'd recommend getting it on sale.

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders

A light-hearted point-and-click adventure game mixing mystery box type puzzles with witness dialogue

Ever since its inception back in 1936, he A.B.C. Murders has charmed millions of whodunit fans with its engaging premise and early display of what we currently refer to as behavioral psychology. Soon after officially retiring, the eccentric Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is challenged through a mysterious letter by a would-be-killer to solve a series of murders targeting people whose names start with successive letters in the alphabet, a challenge you will spend anywhere between 5 to 8 hours solving. The story itself has been adapted multiple times for the silver screen - Agatha Christie fans will be familiar with a certain episode from season 4 of Poirot, in addition to a BBC three-parter starring John Malkovich - and is one of Christie's more well-known works. Because of this, a large number of people will go in knowing the killer's identity and motive, as the game's plot hits most of the same beats as the source material, and in fact is somewhat compressed, slightly altering the plot to the benefit of the last murder victim. As such, let's investigate the parts that make up the game and find out if holds up.

The Story and Characters

The plot itself is solid. Indeed, the clarity and flow of a proven detective's deductive powers locked in a battle of wits with an ingenious killer who keeps taunting him, baiting both the player and the larger police hunting him with various red herrings has stood the test of time: I imagine the unraveling backstories and speculations will be quite satisfying to anyone experiencing The Abc Murders for the first time.

Some of the details that gave the novel its pizazz didn't make the cut, unfortunately. The running gag of Poirot being confused for a frenchman, for instance, the lampshade conversation with Arthur Hastings about how multiple murders make a story less boring or the numerous elements of foreshadowing present in the source material have been either toned down or forsaken altogether, which dilutes the vivid world from Christie's writings, but thankfully all of the essential subplots and characters are present in their original functions.

It has to be said, however, that the voice acting itself is lackluster, if competent, and the characters' charm and depth has mostly been lost in the rudimentary animations and forgettable interpretations. While perhaps the video game medium affords less nuance than television or film, I can't frankly say I was impressed with any of the people in the game. I didn't find them grating either, but there's something to be said about a game that includes dozens of scenes where you examine someone's demeanor for clues when the quality of their expressions is stuck in cel-shaded blockiness.

The mystery will keep you immersed through its own merits - and as far as adaptations go, this game is written in such a way that is structurally faithful to the original novel - but there's also a nice feature that could only work as a video game adaptation - the game gives you the choice of obtaining one of two endings, depending on whether your idea of justice is congruent to Poirot's original prevention of an easy death or not. It's easy to spot the decisional moment as well, so you won't be surprised by the mechanic.

The Puzzles and Gameplay

The vast majority of the game time has you exploring each crime scene, inspecting the characters and environments for clues and combining them to deduce sensible truths about how, why and when every murder was committed. Half a dozen or so witnesses and suspects appear throughout the whole investigation and advancing through the story only demands common sense and attention for the most part. There are a couple of item puzzles but neither are particularly difficult and the only possible headscratcher you will encounter are the several mystery box puzzles. In the vein of games like The Room, you will be rotating items, punching in codes, opening secret compartments and fixing cogwheels in order to access documents revealing fragments of the story. While not extremely complex, these sequences were the only part of the game where I felt I was slow, but once you get into a certain mindset, opening them simply becomes a question of focus and attention to detail.

Ever so often, the game takes you into the Little Grey Cells section, where you have to correlate the relevant clues to specific questions posed, such as: Is the killer X? And you have to decide whether the evidence you have built up rules out or incriminates a certain character. It's not the most intriguing way you can be lead through the story, but it sort of keeps our focus on the narrative and inside this framework where little details and minute observations reveal so much more than we see at first glance.

It has to be said, however, that on a standard adventure difficulty scale, what ABC has to offer is very lightweight -- thankfully, there's no pixel hunting involved here, but at the same time, most puzzles are encountered and solved within the confines of the same screen, are communicated in a very straightforward manner, and there's even a hint system, although I'd be surprised if anyone ever had to use it. Your inventory will contain maybe four items at most and their use will never be unorthodox or illogical - their function is pretty much evident in their shape or name.

The Visuals and Sound

The aesthetics of ABC are nothing to write home about: cel-shaded industry standard quality for 2016 depict a period England that is in no way inspiring or memorable: the entire game has around four or five exterior scenes and as many interiors, and none of them will make any lasting imprint on you. It's fair to say this game is a pocket-sized adaptation that retains the scale, pacing and setpieces of its source material, loses some of its charm in the streamlining inherent to the video game medium but makes decent use of the toolbox provided by this new environment: dialogue choices and character investigations lead you through the murder mystery in an organic fashion.

The animations, while affable, particularly Poirot's strutting around and gesturing in his typical pompous manner, but overall there is very little finesse in what the movement and rigging in this game communicates. The sound design is equally lackluster - there's very little emotion and a little too much detachment a mise-en-scene that is absolutely ripe with dramatic opportunities: the numerous red herrings, the Reveal and even the reconstructions of the murders could have been orchestrated in a much more cinematic or emotionally arresting manner.

Conclusion

How much did you spend on this game? Was it worth it?

I spent 1,49€ for it on Steam on a 90% off sale, without having seen any previews or in-game content beforehand. I bought it as I enjoy murder mysteries in general and the original novel in particular. It was definitely worth it - I spent a little under 6 hours finishing it and while the story has been adapted before in other mediums with more skill and charm, Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders provided a decent diversion and a good dose of softcore point-and-click.

People who will be delighted by this game: Softcore Adventure Gamers, Hardcore Agatha Christie Fans, Budget Hardware Owners (Requirements are low), Aficionados of Cel-Shaded Graphics, Persons who are limited with their time (the whole game can be completed well under 10 hours, most likely under 6 by genre-savvy gamers)

People who will be annoyed by this game: Hardcore Adventure Gamers, People for the Advancement of Replayability and Longevity (despite the two endings, the choice and consequences differences are minimal and do not affect the general narrative).

I'm a big Agatha Christie fan and I like adventure games. I couldn't play this one. It's so monotonous, no thinking, just trying to find the right damn thing to click to advance the story. Bored out of my mind with this one. There needed to be more puzzles to solve in each room rather than just gather evidence.

For fans of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, this game offers the perfect environment for you to use your little gray cells. While the controls can be a little clunky ( I played with mouse--I don't justify the use of a controller for this), the graphics made up for it. Now, this isn't state of the art graphics, but they lent to the time period and worked well for this cozy-ish game.

The voice actors were well done (Although, no one can do better than David Suchet's Poirot). Hercule's character was done justice in that you can make him preen in front of a mirror, read the newspaper, make little jabs at Hastings, sigh at his desk, etc. You can even be the worst Hercule Poirot if you want my fudging up the interrogations. I do feel bad for making one of the characters cry. Sorry.

You don't need to use up all of your gray cells to solve the puzzles in this game. However, if you are stuck, you can use points to unlock a clue. Points accrue as you play, however, the game sometimes does not tell you how to solve anything. Which of course Hercule would NEVER need help!

Overall, it's a fun little chill game with fun achievements.

Very nice point&click with interesting story and puzzles, as well as enjoyable graphics and music. I really liked the deductions mini games. Not too short, not too long and tedious either. A good adaptation of the novel. You will need 2 playthroughs to get all the achievements. Recommended!

I'm a fan of the Poirot character, so I purchased this game without much reservation. I figured I would at least give it a try. After finishing it, I would not recommend it. Some of the controls were clunky, not well designed. The logic used to string together the crime weren't fully fleshed out - if you didn't already know the story it was a bit of a reach.

A somewhat tedious 'investigative' game.

Pros:
- voice acting is decent
- story is good (easy to achieve however when the story is adapted...)

Cons:
- the game does not respect your time at all. Everything is so slow. Animations take forever, the transitions between scenes take an age, and some of the investigative minigames are utterly pointless. The most egregious example is when you have to examine letters to determine if they were written on the same typewriter: you have to do the exact same thing multiple times, with the same slow-ass animations every time.
- the gameplay is pretty formulaic, like a visual novel instead of a game. You're taken from one scene to the other, then you observe the number of clues you are told are there, complete the fairly obvious puzzles you see, and deduce the sometimes opaque clues to reach the given solutions. Repeat til end of game.
- the deductive bits of the game can be annoying at times, with an ambiguous question to answer and a range of clues that could plausibly fit. At least these were not too frequent and easily brute-forced.
- a couple of bugs, and several inconsistencies between voice-over and subtitles.

To sum up, get this if in a sale or bundle if you have nothing better to play, otherwise you're not missing much. Actually, reading the book would probably provide a better experience.

TL;DR: Play the demo first and buy it at a discount if you like it.
This game is hard to review. I initially was drawn to it because of the diversity in play- examining your surroundings, questioning people, puzzle boxes, and putting clues together. I think a lot of these aspects are quite creative. However, the game play lacks quite a bit. The biggest thing is that it is totally linear and requires almost no organic thought on the part of the player. I suppose this could be helpful for novice gamers who need a prompt of what to do next in every moment. But it didn't allow for a lot of creativity. It also has a very slow pace in the between moments, like walking from place to place and going in and out of cut scenes, which could potentially be very frustrating for players. Some of the information was not very clear and I had to make guesses to move forwards. I spent about 6.5 hours playing it without skipping hardly any of the voice over dialogues or scenes. Overall I think this was more like an interactive story, rather than a true video game. Give it a go if the demo was fun, just know it doesn't really go up from there. I wouldn't buy it for more than $5. It did make me want to read more Agatha Christie though! (But the game makers can't really take credit for her story)

This is a very good and interesting detective game available. U'll like even it if U're not familiar with Agatha Christie's novels, even more if U're of it. OK, now into my reviews.
Pros:
+ Quite rich storyline of a gentleman French detective living on 19th century of London, UK.
+ The narrative & plot twist is compelling.
+ The puzzles is mediocre, not too hard & not too easy.
+ Manual & instructions is clear.
+ No bugs encountered, well so far so good for me.
+ You can FIX YOUR MUSTACHE like a prope GENTLEMAN would do!

Cons:
- If U're an achievement hunter, be warned. There R no progress bar anywhere (either in the game or on Steam achievement progress page). The rarest achievement is really hard to get, U have to search the guides online. While the other 3 achievements which can be obtained by made wrong choices is undoubtedly need some replay. I don't complain about this, though. I want 2 C all the conversations made by them if I chose wrong option.

Anyway, that's all. This game is a must-have if U're into detective & mystery games. I just hope I can have all Agatha Christie games on Steam but apparently I was too late for it. This is the only one still available.

It is nice game. Sometimes it is more of guessing, because the observations are not as clear. But I enjoyed it. I liked puzzles a lot, because of their mechanical nature.

I found two strange bugs or if it was intended, it was really confusing then. One was order of people to observe was not random and second was order of observations was not really random so even when I was right, it did't count until I exchanged their positions.

While the story was nice, the overall game felt unfinished as character movements were awkward and the dialogue options were rather limiting. While I know that the game might be limited as it's simply a point & click game, the game itself did not require much thought and was rather simple as, aside from a puzzle or two, you could click whatever you wanted and eventually get through, without really needing to think about things that much. The only difficulties in the game came in the form of lack of direction when the game would not specify what you were supposed to be doing.

Overall, although the story was nice, I would not recommend this game unless you got it on sale, because it is not worth it's value.

Ah, well... not sure how old are the negative reviews but I am currently playing the game on an old laptop with low specs.
The game runs smooth and the gameplay is nice. There are no bugs so far. The dialogue is nice. The story is pretty good ofc.
The graphics are ok. It's not my favorte style, but it's pretty nice for what it is.
You just have to use your brain when talking to people. Even if you didn't read any of Agatha C books. Just try to think.
The puzzles aren't hard. They have logic.
Overall, the game is nice. It's on sale for 1$ so all the complaints are stupid at that point.

Another hand-holding detective game

The achievements suggest that there are ways in which you can make actual mistakes but honestly it doesn't seem like it would affect the outcome of the investigation. Player agency is at a minimum, you can't really miss on anything of importance and there are no penalties for incorrect deductions (you can just randomly select clues until you get the right answer, a technique to which i sadly had to resort to for lack of clarity in what the game wants and lack of differentiation between some clues). Puzzles are easy. I didn't like the final twist.

The most frequent bug and the only one that really mattered was that i couldn't click on some object or progress a puzzle and it required to go back to the main menu and load in again. I wouldn't say it ruined my experience in any significant way.

It is a maybe but since there is no middle option i'm going to recommend it because i recall that i paid less than 2€ for it when it was on sale and because poirot and the voice acting are cool.

I have mixed-feeling about this game. I am a Poirot and a point-and-click fan so I had to play this game.

I have only good things to say about the atmosphere and the art-direction. I like the graphic style and the stylized look of the characters despite that for some reason they are barely moving their mouth when talking. The voice work is very good, especially for the Poirot and Hastings.

The game is a certainly a product of today. You'll have a good time playing it. The story is good, there are lots of mini-games (
and most of them are fun but not too challenging. The are deductions to be made but they are too simple compared to the Sherlock Holmes games.

My biggest problem with this game like most of the games of this genre from larger studios is that it is waaaaaaaay to easy. They all take you by the hand and basically lead you from a simple puzzle to another. I am certainly missing this 'AHA' moment these games used to provide after solving a difficult puzzle. These past few years only Indies, Wadjet Eye games and Thimbleweed Park were able to provide such moments and it's something I personally miss.

If you do not mind playing something really easy you'll have a great time though.

Extremely buggy throughout, but near the end of the game upon a scene change my character simply will not move. Tried mouse and controller, rolled back saves. As far as I can tell your save and progress is in constant threat of breaking. The quality of the game is nowhere near high enough to even begin to outweigh this.

This game is weird. Its very much similar to frogwares sherlock holmes games (older ones). My least favorite ones. Such as,testament of sherlock holmes. Deducting is annoying. It requires you to connect clues in order to lay your thoughts instead of simply giving you ability to lay your thoughts like sherlock holmes crimes and punishments. I know it wouldn't quite work with this type of linear story but it was still annoying. Most clues were confusing. It was hard for me to lay down my conclusion with the clues even tho i had the right conclusion.

The point to click gameplay is also poorly done. I found myself not being able to click on certain objects because they are close to one another. Its also hard to see the whole room/level because of horribly placed fixed camera.

It also has those pointless, mindless puzzles like older sherlock holmes games. The worst part of an detective game. If you want to have puzzles sure have them but they have to make sense with the investigation. It makes no sense for an odinary record player to have puzzle connected to it. A detective game should be about solving the case NOT solving mindless puzzles.

Story is also lackluster with an unsatisfying ending. It has an clever concept but it is done quite poorly. I won't go too deep into it since i will end up spoiling the story.

Not only this is a bad point to click game but also an bad detective game. Which is why i cannot recommend it.

No doubt about it, Hastings is going bald!

Ah, I miss Poirot so much.

This game is lots of fun, especially when you pick the wrong question, lol

The animation is stiff, heck, even some of the characters' face straight up look like they haven't slept for three years. But damn, they did a good job on Poirot's moustache, kudos for that. The VA are weird, but I'll just brush it off as just British being British. Maybe it's just because of my old laptop but sometimes the controller is hard to move around. Also, growing up playing PS2 where we can save the game on different slots made me dislike a game where we can't do that.

Is this game simple? Yes, sometimes I play simple game just for fun and to level up my steam level by collecting the trade cards, and also bonus for nostalgic feeling. Do I recommend this game? Heck yeah! Especially if you like Poirot

As an adult who really enjoys mysteries and such, this game was somewhat entertaining, but also a little too simplistic as you simply click through everything that is overly obvious. I suppose this game could be targeted to a younger audience, who may enjoy learning the skills of observation and logic. There are some mechanics which don't work too well without a mouse (scrollpad only is pretty frustrating), but if you're buying games on Steam, you probably have a mouse. Overall, I'd give it a 2 out of 5 stars.

This game is excellent-- this is one of the few Poirot stories I have not read and experiencing it this way is an absolute treat. The game can be a little clunky at points, in nominal ways like an occasional unusual mouse movement required for a puzzle or gaps in dialogue, but it does not detract a bit from what this game is: an imaginative and engrossing retelling of a fantastic story. Especially while it's on sale, this is a must have, partially for its excellence as a game and also as an affordable gauge for whether one likes this genre of games. Outstanding.

Agatha Christie's ABC murders is an interesting mix of mechanisms. At its heart, it's a point-and-click adventure reenacting Christie's book featuring her well-known detective Hercule Poirot. But it also is a puzzle game and actually not far from a visual novel which both is kind of appropriate given the inspiration.

First, the point-and-click part. You control Poirot and can move him around by clicking where to go, what to look at, occasionally picking up things. You can do observations of people and the environment to gather facts before you talk with suspects or witnesses. Based on the gathered information you can choose replies during the conversation with them to find new evidence. If you found enough evidence, you have to combine the evidence to answer questions regarding the ABC serial killer case you are investigating and progress the story. There's a bit of inventory management but inventory puzzles take a backseat in this game.

There are about a dozen puzzles contained in the game that usually involve manipulating objects like chests or a cashier to open them. These puzzles are the most challenging part of the game and the only part where you might get stuck. If this happens you can call for help which will do the next step in solving the puzzle for you. A certain amount of time has to pass before you can call for help again. There was one puzzle that really stumped me and necessitated calling for help. Solving a puzzle usually leads to more evidence.

The game is linear and cannot be failed. This is what I mean by calling it a visual novel. Beside the puzzles, there's nothing really difficult. You are always told what you need to do next and the typical challenge consists of finding all evidence in one location before being able to move on. There's a secondary challenge of acting like Poirot would do, i.e. finicky, a bit arrogant but usually well-behaved. In dialogues you get points when you ask the questions he would have asked. But the game doesn't punish you if you choose other options. In the worst case, you lose an achievement.

I liked the game. The graphics are nice and the background music and sound effects are adequate. But it was a bit too sedate for my liking. Again, this is appropriate given that Agatha Christie books are exactly that judged by modern standards. But I wouldn't have minded a quicker pace and some more consequences of failing to interrogate suspects in the appropriate way.

Going into the game, I was most worried about the Poirot voice actor, however he was leaps and bounds above the rest. The other voice actors, more specifically Japp, is dreadful. I can't unhear Moss from the I.T. Crowd. I found at times that I purposefully skipped through dialogue so I can avoid the voice acting as much as possible.

The game tries for a certain art style but it has not been executed properly, I can't quite figure out why that is, perhaps lighting and shadows? The characters don't look like they belong to the environments around them.

As for the game itself, it does not reinvent the wheel of neither the detective genre or point and click games. The features are basic and dull, with little to no excitement when going through the motions of solving the mystery. In fact the simple nature of the clues and deduction are rather insulting with how monotonous they are, especially when you have to continually answer the most simple of questions.

Some of the puzzles were interesting, however I found that they were not practical or relatable to the characters within the story, with seemingly everyone having some extravagant and unnecessarily long puzzle to get the most simplest of items or belongings. They seem shoe-horned into the game to give some, if any resemblence of the detective genre that originally drew me to this game.

Would strongly advise looking for alternative games in this genre. Not even the idea of playing Poirot is enough to suggest you give this game a try.

Information / Review English

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders is an adventure game developed by Artefacts Studio / Tower Five.

Gameplay / Story

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders is based closely on the novel from 1936: The Belgian gentleman with a hat and mustache actually wanted to retire in London. But when the alleged head of a series of murders challenges him personally, Poirot naturally feels obliged to help out Scotland Yard. Again and again the unknown author announces his atrocities in the form of a letter. Poirot and his clumsy companion, Hastings, have no choice but to drive to the provincial towns in southern England, examine the bodies at the crime scenes and look for clues. One detail always remains the same: Time and again, the murderer leaves an open ABC timetable for the train as a signature on the victim. The game mechanics are primarily based on Sherlock Holmes' last adventures, but implement the interpretation of the clues and other elements in a less complex and much more beginner-friendly way. In addition, developer Artefacts Studios regularly throws in outsourced mechanical puzzles in the style of Professor Layton.

The mechanical puzzles also play an important role, which, similar to Professor Layton, are outsourced to a separate screen.

In addition, you can earn extra points if you behave in a particularly stylish manner as in the novel.

Pro

+ The novel was successfully implemented
+ logical, beginner-friendly puzzles
+ likeable characters
+ cozy atmosphere
+ branched dialog options
+ Achievements and trading cards

Contra

- Dialogue puzzles have hardly any influence on the course of the game
- short playing time
- kept way too simple

Conclusion

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders offers you a cozy, very classic crime thriller to play along for the long winter evenings.

Information / Review Deutsch

Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders ist ein Abenteuer-Spiel, welches von Artefacts Studio / Tower Five entwickelt wurde.

Gameplay / Geschichte

Having played many adventure games, this one is a really poor example. No challenge and no respect for player's intelligence with really dull puzzles. Most of the time the game makes you do meaningless, obvious actions to force you through a story. I know it's based on a book and tries to be faithful but this is too much, renders the player involvement without a meaning.

Also, I don't understand how that many programmers + testers and you still have many bugs in this game. I had to quit to main menu to get out of some situations (basically soft locked). A shame that in such a non-complicated game there are soft-locking bugs.

Graphics are on the poor side as well, there is a style that was tried to be achieved but it lacks the consistency and taste. A lot of technical problems with lighting (e.g. off-placed shadows) too.

It's a wasted potential really, I enjoyed a very little section of the game within its whole. I would expect an Agatha Christie adventure game to be something more interesting and well-crafted.

Relatively short game that you can finish in a day. Puzzles are not that difficult. So it is kind of an interactive book in that sense.

It really makes you feel like the world's greatest detective. Including the OCD. There are a lot of details faithful to his character you'll notice in the background (even in the UI), true fans made this game. The animations are a bit too stiff, especially for the faces, and so is the voice acting, but they don't take away from it being a decent adaptation of a good story. I see other people complaining about the puzzles being basic, but I'm just looking at it as a visual novel.

There is something so deliciously old fashioned about the overall jankiness and quaintness of The ABC Murders , that it should come with a complimentary kettle of tea and some biscuits. Don't expect the world and you will be pleasantly reminded of days long gone.

A pretty good game. It had a few problems for example talking to characters was occasionally difficult because you had to click a very specific place. And understandably Poirot moves slowly :) But it´s beautifully made short game.

I really wish I could give this a sideways thumb!

This game is a fairly okay (if short-lived) murder mystery set during the glory years of Hercule Poirot: a fastidious gentleman of laudable perception, well voice-acted and true to novel form.

Graphically, the game is quite dated and hardly impressive in any manner at all. In fact, the lack of detail and resolution is quite glaring in certain close-in puzzles. Clearly, the budget did not go towards this department.

Soundwise, as already mentioned, I really liked the voice acting of whomever played Poirot. Indeed, many of the characters had good voice actors but there were a few misses in there as well. Overall, the voice-acting was well above average. However, the music and ambiance is sorely lacking. Combined with the simplistic graphics and limited locales, I never felt immersed.

The story is taken from an Agatha Christie novel (surprise, surprise) but a lot has been trimmed. If not for the gameplay elements you'd finish it in about 3-4 hours.

And the gameplay is where the game really let me down. Gameplay consists of moving, observing, deducing, questioning, and a handful of puzzles. Moving Poirot is a chore and rather pointless if you ask me. While he is amusing to look at, walking around as him is hardly fun. Observing items and people is a fairly enjoyable but simplistic affair. Deductions -taking knowledge and forming conclusions using your grey matter - are largely an exercise in throwing a handful of fact bubbles into a workflow and voila. The puzzles, of which there are only a few, are quite boring and either too easy or too obtuse.

Overall, I can't recommend this game. Some of it is done with real love and some of it is an exercise in monotony. At the end of the day, there are better murder-mystery games up on Steam :(

Great point and click adventure game, especially for fans of the Poirot Series. Although there were some tedious parts with some of the clues the majority was great to play through. The animation and graphics added character to the game play also. Great fun.

I should probably say that I only bought this game because I got a discount. I don't know anything about the source material and have watched few Agatha Christie movies. However, I do like murder mysteries and point & click adventures. I've played halfway through it by now (51% according to the game itself) and I suppose it's entertaining enough to continue. It's by now means a good game though.

The controls are slow and clunky and the graphics are pretty bad for a game released in 2016. The voiceover work is fine, although I find it a bit strange that even Poirot's close friends mispronounce his name.
The puzzles, if you even want to call them that, are incredibly simple and most of the gameplay is just clicking on things to ackknowledge that you've seen them. The game is trying to do some interesting things with investigating crimescenes and logically connecting facts ... but that too is just an exercise in clicking. Close to no real thought is needed and the great detective arrives at most conclusions 20 minutes after the player.

So no, I can't recommend this game. If you get it at a discount or as a gift and if you wanna spend an evening clicking on a lot of things while enjoying a basic but not too boring detective story, I guess there's no harm in that. You also get a lot of Steam achievements by just following the storyline.

This is a story-rich adventure and mystery game with amazing voice acting and well-written, witty and lively conversations. I also liked most of the puzzles, because I thought that they were difficult enough to keep someone interested, but not so much as to discourage a player from trying to finish the game.

Many of the achievements are related to the story and cannot be missed, but the missable ones are intriguing and require different decisions at some points of the game, in order for all of them to be obtained.

‘Agatha Christie – The ABC Murders’ is a good adaptation of Christie’s 1936 novel, but I’m not sure that it’s a good game.

If you’re a fan of Christie’s stories, Hercule Poirot and (as other users have pointed out) the ITV series starring David Suchet in particular, you’ll marvel at the mise en scène. There’s real panache to the game’s quasi-cel shaded art style, which comes to the fore in wide-angled shots of environments that would not look out of place in a high-budget period drama. An impressive amount of time and effort has been spent reconstructing the art deco aesthetics of the period, most visible in Poirot’s apartment and in both the interiors and exteriors of the section in Bexhill-on-sea. The vividly drawn character models, and the crisp divisions of light and shadow that place them so firmly in the game’s world, are similarly beautiful. Complaints about the game being locked to 30 FPS seem besides the point given just how good it looks, though limited facial animations do detract from the high polish seen elsewhere.

The story is faithful to its source material, and will of course provide more surprises for players unfamiliar with that material. Knowing the book well enough, I find it difficult to judge whether the mystery itself works here – whether it reaches the same heights of anticipation, whether its twists and turns carry due weight, and especially whether its use of several cut scenes for the purpose of dramatic irony (a potentially risky device in this genre) achieve their intended effect. However, I suspect the mystery is well served here. Those cut scenes aside, the story’s structure sticks to what Poirot knows and develops as he comes to know it, murder by murder and clue by clue. This is as it should be, and with the exception of a rushed ending the strength of the plot should hit this game’s audience in just the right spot.

The first problem with ‘Agatha Christie – The ABC Murders’ is that this isn’t a book or a film. It is a game and, as a game, it needs mechanics with a degree of depth and variety. The competing pressures to meet these needs while letting Christie’s story do its thing have resulted in a gaming experience that feels at times plodding, myopic, and lacking in agency and challenge. Of course, more or less visible tram lines were always going to be present here: it is a given that the player would need to find certain clues, and make certain deductions from those clues, to progress the narrative. The problem comes in how those requirements are presented and how we, the player, feel about our role in meeting them. I suspect most players will feel during such moments that they are in fact clicking through a story rather than seriously influencing its outcome, whether by making choices or accomplishing worthwhile goals.

This is largely an indictment of the mechanics themselves, which range from an investigation mechanic (hover the cursor over or click on well-signposted clues); a conversation mechanic (limited dialogue trees with even more limited, typically singular, outcomes); a puzzle mechanic (the most challenging sections of the game, requiring the player to unlock a sequence of puzzle boxes); a ‘little grey cells’ mechanic (where the player connects clues found through the other mechanics to make deductions); and a ‘reconstruction’ mechanic (where the player narrates a cinematic replaying each murder using a choice tree). None of these mechanics quite hit the sweet spot between the demands of narrative and gameplay. The unresolved question as to why every character would own at least one intricate puzzle box hangs over the story and the time spent unlocking each box kills any sense of narrative pace. The other mechanics keep the story moving and the intrigue flowing at the cost of any real challenge or consequence for failure.

One further mechanic comes close to making up for these problems, if not quite solving them. Certain actions and dialogue choices grant the player ‘ego points’, awarded on the basis of acting ‘like Poirot’. Emphasising the role-playing potential of the game’s scenario is an ingenious way of introducing a different form of challenge, one that incentivises the player to actively contribute to a consistent and vivid story experience through their approach to gameplay. The fussy, mannered detective lends himself perfectly to this idea, and it is therefore disappointing that ego points do not feed back into the gameplay – they essentially function as the player’s running score – and are largely conferred for making correct observations, progressing in the investigation and tokenistic actions, such as Poirot examining himself in one of the game’s many mirrors. Had this system been utilised more, ‘Agatha Christie – The ABC Murders’ would have been a far more distinctive game.

That the game evidently recognises the draw of its iconic protagonist makes a number of consistent errors in his vocal performance all the more egregious. Poirot and several other characters make a dog’s dinner of pronouncing most English place names (‘lie-chester’ instead of ‘Leicester’, for example). Worse, Poirot’s playful signature phrase ‘little grey cells’ has become ‘brain cells’. This is the equivalent of Gandalf bellowing at the Balrog ‘you shall not progress’. Poirot’s voice actor does a lot of good work elsewhere – his intonation is typically well judged – and should feel let down by this baffling oversight. Less serious but equally immersion-breaking are the continuity errors, the worst being a copy of The Railway Children with a foreword by Jenny Agutter, an actress who starred in a TV adaptation of the novel more than three decades after the events of the game. The same may be said for what can only be translation errors, such as the labelling of a row of beach huts as ‘modern bungalows’ Given the amount of labour expended on giving life to the game’s period setting, such details stand out and set the teeth on edge.

‘Agatha Christie – The ABC Murders’ has its moments, supplied largely by the beats of Christie’s story, the beautiful environments, and glimpses of joy and invention. I couldn’t suppress a smile when, on two occasions, the game’s mechanics were repurposed to tell us more about who Poirot is – the investigation mechanic being turned on Hastings’s poorly-packed suitcase – or to apply his deductive reasoning skills in a different way – using the ‘little grey cells’ to interpret a dream. These moments hint to a richer gameplay experience that never quite arrives. What does arrive is a limited detective game with a sprinkling of charm, quite a few fumbles and brilliant source material. It is absolutely worth the reduced price at which I purchased the game (just over £1), but whether you are a Christie fanatic or a lover of detective games, you should manage your expectations.

This game has potential but it's a glitchy mess and it lacks some direction at times. I played through the game in its entirety just so I could see it through to the end. It was somewhat enjoyable but it was also incredibly frustrating at times. Sometimes the puzzles would glitch out and not allow me to finish. One example is the music box puzzle. The music box would open and immediately shift the camera so I couldn't access it properly. I had to exit the game and restart to get it to respond properly. Sometimes the grey cells questions had many possible answers but you were supposed to guess what they wanted you to put in because the next question was going to use some of the answers that fit the prior question.

If the developers could spend a little time updating and fixing the glitches, it would be a good game. As it stands, it's just mediocre.

The other agatha christie games are better. This game follows the story of the book but it's not really enjoyable. Poirot moves realy slow, some of the models glitch out, and details from the book that show the murderers motive are missing. The puzzles are pretty easy, most of them are just arrainging things in order, so not really a puzzle.
Because of how simple it is, i'd recommend it for younger players that haven't read the book.
If you enjoy these types of games then you should play the sherlock holmes or the other agatha christie games.

Pro’s

I never read or saw any part of this particular mystery before, so I did not know what to expect. After finishing, I watched the 1992 TV episode that closely resembles this game. I found that this game was more interesting and had me more engaged.
This game does a very good job of having you investigate the crime scene to find clues and questioning people for information. I think the best feature this game has is having you think about and work through the crime. The story it’s based on is very well done and had me hooked till the end.

Con’s

The character’s faces are stiff when they are talking. In some cases, you can’t even tell if their mouth is moving. Also there were several instances where the game would glitch so that I could no longer talk to a person. I would have to go in and out of menus or reload the game to fix. Import thing was that I did not lose progress when going through this work around. Story is also linear, so there is no reason to replay.

Overall

I would definitely recommend this game. If you like Poirot, mysteries, or point and click adventure…this is a great game for you.

Wonderful game for Poirot fans, and also those new to Agatha Christie. It holds all the charm, mystery and clever intent of a good Christie novel (nothing lost in translation here) and the characters are three dimensional enough to be engaging, without being over the top.
The game is very reminiscent of the David Suchet Poirot films, so has an atmosphere of elegance and style of 1930s England, marred only by the occasional murder! The music, background sounds, and voice acting are superb, no clumsy accents in this game!
The game play, combining traditional point and click, observations, puzzles and 'grey cells' thinking give something for everyone, and means the game play doesn't become boring.
The story is thrilling, and you truly feel like you are the one solving these murders!
Overall I am more impressed with this game than I expected to be. (I was prepared to hate the portrayal of Poirot as only Suchet has ever played him to perfection in my eyes.) I feel incredibly satisfied having finished, and will look forward to playing it again later to get some remaining achievements.

Mister pretty mustache

I'm not a fan of Poirot TV series or anything, but i liked this game. I think it's pretty underrated and too few people noticed it exists. I loved another Agatha Christie game but forgot its name, some train mystery game.

ABC Murders is an investigation point&click game. The gameplay most of the time is really fun and requires thinking. There are some challenging puzzles, gameplay doesn't feel repetitive, every chapter is something different. Besides solving puzzles and making connections to find the culprit you need to talk with witnesses to get some information about the killings or other people. You also look around the places for clues. Puzzles range from generic maze puzzles to more interesting ones. It has similar system to Sherlock Holmes games where you have the list of characters and you need to connect the dots and accuse one or another.
Chapters take place in different locations, there's a lot of characters and it could be really confusing and hard at times. But in the end you find out the truth in the best Poirot fashion.
Maybe sometimes you get stuck or must go through some annoying puzzle, but overall the game feels and plays good.

Graphically the game looks great, you can't go wrong with cell-shaded graphics. Face animations and animations in general are no the best ones but they're enough to nor break the immersion. Although in a game with lots of cutscenes this should be the priority when talking about graphics.
Areas are well detailed and it's fun explore them.
Voice acting and music are pretty good too.

If you love pretending to be a detective this game is great for you. Lots of puzzles, people to meet and looking at Poirot's mustache.

Pros
  • Good story
  • Fun gameplay
  • Nice graphics
  • Makes you feel like detective

Cons
  • Facial animations needs work
  • Some puzzles are annoying
