Aven Colony
Colony Sim from 2017.

Background:
Discover Aven Prime, a planet of deserts, tundras and jungles, light years from Earth. In Aven Colony you are responsible for the first extrasolar settlement of mankind. Build colonies, expand them into vast cities and face the challenges of colonizing a new world.

Gameplay:
Single player campaign, this one is to learn. Very extensive and without any guidelines on how to achieve the goals. Achieve certain Development stages that are suggested to you, so to speak. You build settlements in a number of different areas, which preferably also survive for a while. That's exactly what I have a problem with. For me, the settlement always dies, although everything is actually there that is needed. I think that even after 7 hours and a lot of trying I keep making the same mistake. Unfortunately, I don't know where it is.
However, the campaign is well done and gives you a deep dive into the secrets of this planet.

Sandbox:
This is the actual game I guess. Here you have plenty of options to set everything in advance. You have a lot of fun here.

Conclusion:
Very difficult campaign with good gameplay. Very modern and realistic implementation of the settlement concept. Diverse environment and long-lasting interesting thanks to the free play mode. Recommended.
Oh yes, there is a DLC for the game that you should buy with.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2232235324

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2232234619

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2232249414

This game is currently unplayable on modern PCs. The game crashes within 30 seconds of launching. The devs are aware but do nothing. I haven't had a chance to play it but be warned the game is unplayable at the moment. Like many others I have reached out to the dev team and they seem to acknowledge an issue with the game connecting to the internet causing the crash but have made no statement.

Avoid this until there is a major patch release.

So after playing this for a few hours I get the Mostly Positive reviews. The setting is cool and the upgrades and balancing is fine, but with no meaningful combat nothing really happens. So after you've played for a few hours you've seen everything the game offers besides some balancing acts and rationing supplies.

I'm gonna be honest: Aven Colony reminds me of nothing so much as the more recent installments of Tropico -- individual ploppable buildings, a smallish amount of lawmaking, and a medium-length campaign. Is it a perfect space colonization-city builder? ... Well. It's really good. I wish it had more buildings, more laws to make, more hazards to fight... but it's also half the price of a triple-A game (and often on sale for even less). It shares some negative qualities with Banished, namely the fact that once you solve the few issues the game presents, it's fairly straightforward, and unlike denser city builders, your creative freedom is limited to some extent by resource scarcity (and building variety).

But I'm having lots of fun, and genuinely hoping for an expansion or two soon to fill in some of those details. If you enjoy micromanagement city builders and sci-fi atmosphere, I wouldn't hesitate to pay full price for this.

I have only had this a couple weeks, but I'm having a lot of fun. I read some of the negative reviews here, and I would suggest to those people they look on google to figure out what they have done wrong. I had to when, for example, some citizens got infected for the first time and I didn't know how to fix it. It was an easy fix, just involved a couple buildings I hadn't used yet and so forgot about. As for the one person who lost power, which caused all of his colony to shut down, well, meteor strikes can damage buildings if you don't have enough turrets. If you have a research center you can set up a proclamation to have your construction drones auto repair anything damaged. (I had a meteor strike shatter a tunnel to my power generating stuff, but luckily it happened as I watched and I knew what to fix fast). I like the voice acting, the levels are different enough to be a challenge for me, the graphics are good. One of my favorite games in a long time.

It's a competent colony sim game, but... that's about it.

It started off good, but both the campaign and the gameplay just sort of trail off without adding anything new. There's not much in the way of replay value, the later campaign levels were starting to feel repetitive even playing them for the first time, because there's just not much there for interesting builds or interesting challenges. You're basically just building the same buildings in a slightly different arrangement every time. Even playing fairly casually, it barely took 40 hours to complete the campaign and 100% the achievements, and I wouldn't hold your breath for it getting updated any time soon.

If you buy it on sale, it might be a decent value, but it's not a very deep game by any metric.

Yeah...I would recommend this to other players. The only advice I would give is learn the game well through the tutorials before you approach a campaign game play. Follow specified steps from the tutorial, and you should be okay. I don't like the fact that you can't see more of the characters interacting because structures are covered, unlike other building games I play. Zooming in you just literally see them just passing by. Also be prepared for the long haul with building a booming metropolis.

The first impressions of Aven Colony are great, as you build your first colony, finding your way on this alien world. It doesn’t take too long before you start to see the limitations, whether by design or by mistake, leaving this as a city builder that’s easy to pick up and play, but one that could do with a little more depth.

Though the campaign is unimaginative and some areas are not fleshed out as well as they could have been, the game is still addictive stuff. But, once you’ve run through the campaign you’re only left with the sandbox mode, which grinds to a halt as soon as you start to do well.

Verdict 7/10

A simple casual city builder. While not sophisticated in depth, detail, and research. The game is unique in its sci-fi style and casual nature. If you want a casual city builder with simple tasks and a basic story, get this on sale.

I have played the game in the past on another system so I have much more than 7hrs playtime.
The game has nice graphics, atmosphere and alien worlds. Industry chain is simple although it can be demanding at times and you have to turn on/off some production every now and then especially water you get loads of it and you storage gets full.
But game fails badly when population increases. No matter how good you set your food production population is like time bomb. You have to keep building farms no end. Then winter comes and even if you have loads of food, large population eats it all and then they start dying fast, industry and services stop working because of missing workers and it's game over!
You have no option to fix it but start a new game, You manage better next time but eventually you fail again. Wasting so many hours for what? And not even cheats! I have played countless strategy games this one fails badly.
Too bad because otherwise it's a nice game.

I'm just doing 100% of what the game tells me to do. No real risk in anything I'm doing. Low Housing? You'll be informed how to build a House. Food? Build a farm. Need literally anything else? Build a 'literally anything else generator'. There aren't any consequences of my actions, or more specifically, there isn't anything driving me to make any real decisions. Having built every structure, explored on the overworld map and have several thousand nanites at the ready made me feel I completed the game.

Great graphics. Smooth game play. Go big or go home.

Not a lot to do. Boring after a few hours on the same map.

Repairing is tedious. You must select each building individually then see if it needs repair or not. With a large colony you spend a lot of your time repairing, or you wait for things to break and then click on the notice of them breaking and spend all your time repairing.

8x speed sounds great. Till the spam hits. Who cares if housing is full? Do I need 8 notices all in a row telling me?

Never build tunnels, instead build atriums, they are found in the decorations tab. They cost 6 nano(3x tunnel price) to build and function like tunnels only they give happiness. Use these instead of tunnels to have colored 'roads' and have your people always happy.

All in all a decent game. Like most things in life, buy it on sale.

I really like futuristic city builders. I just dig them. Aven Colony is a cool, laid-back futuristic city builder, with some cool theme-specific mechanics (alien wildlife infecting your buildings, meteor showers, creating off-site solar farms, sending expeditions to explore the surrounding areas) that is just enjoy a lot. The campaign presents you with different maps that require different approaches to keep things interesting. It's one the easy side, but it's A-OK for me, I play city builders to unwind. Recommended.

I like most of the game and story lines. Sometime the objective is harder because of lack of material. And I still haven't figured out how much food and water needed for each person and how much variation is needed. I'm not a hardcore computer player. 68 years old and grew up with pong but I still like trying.

Give me all your poor, oxygen deprived and alien spores infected sick and I shall build you a gulag of happiness on a far away hostile world. A utopia powered by work performance enhancing drugs and strict caloric intake restrictions based on the subject's height and occupation plus mental acuity for good measure. EVERYONE would be equal, but some would be more equal than others, as usual of course. But no all jokes aside this ones pretty fun, challenging fantastic looking city builder. I definitely prefer it to Cities Skylines because the gameplay is more goal oriented. One moment you're doing great and everything is in the green then the next if you're not too careful everything can quite easily spiral out of control and all your political prisoners suddenly die. Anyways enough chit chat, it is time to go worship the Supreme Leader now.

Gameplay 7/10
Story 4/10
Controls 8/10
Graphics 8/10
Difficulty 5/10

Positive Aspects

  • Runs stable. No crashes, bugs, or other major errors.
  • Is exactly what it's advertised as, no more, no less.
  • Looks really good.
  • Lots of diverse buildings to play around with.
  • The soundtrack is truly amazing.
  • No stress. No PvP. Surviving against the world rather than enemies(even though there are enemies they aren't really a threat).

Negative Aspects

  • The storyline is a bit dull.
  • The difficulty. Even though a scenario takes quite some time to finish, it isn't really challenging.
  • Optimization. After a while, the game starts to lag a bit. My system should be able to handle 4 simultaneous running instances of this game.
  • Each new level in the campaign requires you to research every technology/fruit/goods again which is a bit dumb.
  • All research/buildings are available on the first mission, as long as you research it.

Summary

Didn't have high expectations for Aven Colony and I was surprised at how much I liked it. Is it worth the full price? No. On sale? Get it!

A very average game

This is a fully released game with beta or early acces feeling . GUI is so bad, story is so boring and gameplay is so unbalanced. The game is not a challenge. You just need to build some specific buildings at the beginning of the map and then its gg.
I don't recommend it, Surviving Mars is much better.

Very bog-standard city builder on an alient planet. It's not bad, but it has no meaningful mechanic that have not already been seen a thousand times in the genre. It also has basically no story or replayability, and prtty much everything is unlocked from the start.

Decent game, but there's not enough meat to it ... there are too many resources, IMO, and keeping track of them, what they can be converted into, and making sure you don't have enough room left for the useful stuff (by MANUALLY deleting excess materials, not simply having settable caps that workers will build to and then stop). While each mission has a different map and different objectives, there's no real progression of what you can or cannot build ... and for a city survival builder game, there's not a whole lot of different KINDS of buildings to build. It pales in comparison to, say, Surviving Mars.

I like city/colony management games. I have a zillion hours off steam in the Anno and Tropico series. But this game just garbage.
- The story basically an audiobook. You don't have any part in it.
- The learning curve is a joke. Start with the absolute basic like how to move the camera, then you get every building and upgrade to find out yourself.
- Because of that you almost never use the half of the building.
- There are a zillion type of food, but only 1 type of everything else. And you don't have to use the zillion type of food at all.
- The 2 real resources of the game is nanites to build thing and people to work. So every map is the same. build up nanite production as soon as possible and build at least 2-3 people factory and wait the numbers grow. That's the whole game on every map.
- My favourite campaign map was where you need to pump up the happiness, because you need to use almost everything to do so. Every other map happiness doesn't matter till you can keep it over 50%. Just shame.

This game needs more complexity. More stuff to do. More stuff to maintain. Just more everything.

Highly recommended for fans of city builders, simulation, space colonization, and strategy. I consider it easily one of the best city builders I have played.

+Visuals and environments
+Music/sound and atmosphere
+Excellent UI
+Voice acting
+Story campaign and sandbox
+Great variety of buildings/infrastructure
+Upgrades
+Camera/zoom/speed controls
+Perfect for beginners and veterans alike

-Can get repetitive especially early on each mission
-Colonists don't really feel unique
-Could benefit from some different factions
-Some missions have excessive morale requirements

Simple yet complex, a rather non-combat city management game that focuses on resource, space/geography and time management. The environments lend themselves well to challenges and there are a few small perks. The visuals are stunning (when run on an appropriate system) but at its core, nearly anyone could pick this up for 40-50 hours.

I've played similar colony management, base-building sims in the past like Planetbase but this game is the most satisfying so far perhaps it might be because you get to listen to your colonists converse from time to time, its really funny to listen to their conversations sometimes and this gives it a more personal touch~ Plus its graphics are really beautiful, its simple yet fun to grind away at and see your colony turn into a sci-fi metropolis! :D

I'll admit tho, there are a few issues especially at the end game that can be improved like the storage and map space issues but well, minor issues imo, ultimately I think this game is more similar to a fixed-space colony management sim rather than the infinitely expanding kind but well perhaps this might change in the future when they roll more updates? or perhaps not since this game is rather old, released on 2017 hahaha still enjoy my little alien planet metropolis tho :3

this is not a game for a starter in the world of city builders if you do however play this for the first timer. google will be your friend

This had a bit of a learning curve for me but once I got my bearings, I really enjoyed it. It was challenging without being impossible. I liked that it had a few decorative touches like parks. I'd like to see more and to see more resident tower skins. The infrastructure AI was really good. When I set things up properly, I didn't have delays or issues. I might have missed it but I would like a display of how much of an item the colony is consuming. I think I overbuilt a lot of the time because I wasn't sure how much I actually needed. It doesn't have much replay value, at least to me, other than to try to build uniquely shaped colonies. I'd love an expansion. Overall, good colony sim.

Well it was nice for a bit.
But it lacks some major things.
The layover is horrible you really need to hover over all blocks to see what is happening.
Would be nice if you just could say produce this item till that level and then quit now it is just a gamble and your stores will fill up quickly with stuff you don't need.
And worse the building limit in sandbox mode. I was trying to build as big as possible and then all suddenly you reacht the buildings limit. even tearing down other buildings didn't provide me a way to continue.

Well and then all suddenly you just i had it with this.

this game is beatifull.
1. you know how city building games have layers? so you can check crime, housing, other coverage etc?
this game layout are horrible. grey or colored blocks instead of the pretty buildings.
they didn't even bother with that.

2. I guess most people who reviewed the game only did the first mission once. make sense.
I made another go at it, because... it was extremely bugged. the story didn't start, the game wouldn't open the growing options. such a big bug. really.

3. this entire game feels like the design was locked by the devs for no reason. why are things locked?!

sadly, a big no from me. pretty to look at for a while. pointless afterwards. stay away.

Oh, it feels like the game was abandoned by the devs. I'm not sure, but so many design point feel half backed. for a game from 2 years. it shouldn't be like this.

I had seen this a while ago and added it to my wishlist. Just recently it went on sale for $6.95 so I picked it up. Started playing the campaign on normal difficulty and once I started playing I got sucked in!!

The game play was easy to pick up and straight forward. I like how it teaches you as you go but it's not like many tutorials that drag out and bore you. You learn the basics in a non mission setting, then learn the rest as you go. You can however choose to go your own way once you get the hang of it and play at your own pace or style. If you get to a point where it would have given you a a goal that you have already completed, you automatically get the reward.

Many games like this get bogged down with too many different metrics to watch to keep your people happy, but I felt this had a great balance and it was never overwhelming.

The board are beautiful and the scenery of the planet is well designed. The various environmental dangers are fun and varied and you see more as the game goes on. The story line, while not super in depth, was interesting and kept me wanting to play and know more. I sank over 40 hours into this in one week and finished the campaign mode. While I wish there were more to it, I feel that for the $7 I paid I definitely got my monies worth.

I really wish there was a workshop where I could get more buildings as the limited number of things to build does get boring after a while.

Overall, great game especially for the price on sale!

Nice game once you get used to what the basic needs of the colony are and keep an eye on it. Liked that one has different missions to move on so you are not stuck in one world. Also, one can choose various difficulties to play. Would recommend.

A pretty game but 'Frustratingly Shallow' would be the overriding sentiment from my time playing Aven. Here is why I feel it lacks depth.

Every mission scenario starts alike. Small starter colony, same resources. Never mixed up where you start with a bigger colony with more problems.
Events like a shard storm get minimal to any acknowledgement. You'd think if you a role playing the governer of a colony that lives in pressurised buildings and tunnels an event like that would warrant a lot of emergency response and drama. Ditto toxic gas getting into your intakes, but nope all of these events barely cause a ripple in your play.
Building morale boosting structures or police, again happen with very little increase to the immersion or care factor.
Building your habitats and skyscrapers in awful mine filled neighbourhoods or stunning pictaresque vistas with parks again seems not to matter. your colonists don't bat an eyelid so it disincentivises you to try to get the ambience of the residential areas up.
The thing I found most annoying was how low-key the Juggernaut discoveries are on the Overworld map. No matter what they discover/ rescue, it was impossibly meaningless and irrelevant.
All the alien fauna you see on a temperate map looks cool but you can't interact with it to harvest and process it. If you could that'd be so much more interesting.
Research options and policy decisions all seem shallow and meaningless.

Imagine caring what your Juggernauts had discovered or even having to make a meaningful decision on what to do with each discovery..... Imagine having to give a crap when a shard storm hit....

If the developers could take a strong leaf out of Frostpunk's book this game could be a lot more engaging.

I really quite liked this game. The mechanics are deep enough to make each campaign mission feel like a progression on the previous level, but still simple enough that it doesn't become frustrating. The game slowly develops from fertile valleys where you have few threats, to levels with scattered farmable land and more enemies. The final level, in which you can only grow alien crops (which need to be processed before being edible) was a satisfying nudge out of the player's comfort zone.

To be clear, this isn't a game that will keep you occupied for dozens of hours - my 22 hours of playtime represents acquiring all of the achievements, and I don't have any interest in playing more of it. It was fun while it lasted, but any more time would be outstaying its welcome. Maybe I enjoyed it more than I would have considering how frustrated I was with Surviving Mars, but Aven Colony was exactly the sort of experience that I was looking for.

The game certainly has problems, though none that stopped me from enjoying it. For example, there's not much reason to ever build windmills as opposed to literally any other power source; and while the game says spores target intake fans, I never really figured out what that meant, since they seem to attack any structure regardless. The mechanical quirks are hardly worth mentioning, though the writing was frequently eye-rolling. I usually get way too involve in analyzing/critiquing game stories in my reviews, though I don't think my critique would be very interesting or fun to read in this case; The only thing I want to bring attention to is that it is very, very difficult to write a character to be an annoying character, without making the game itself be annoying. There is one character in particular who makes the dialogue nearly unbearable every time they're involved. That being said, I'm glad the story is there - it's effective at contextualizing the scenarios and setting the tone, and the game would certainly be far worse without it.

I wish I could praise the game much more, but I struggle to elaborate on the things the game does well. It doesn't really have any specific feature that it does superbly well; it's a lot of simple and frankly generic mechanics, just combined in an extremely effective way. It certainly won't satisfy anyone looking for a really complex citybuilder, and I have to agree with reviews arguing that $30 is a high pricepoint for the content on offer, but it's not *that* high either - if you want a smaller citybuilder experience that won't ask you for too much investment in time and a steep learning curve, this is a very good pick.

A splendid city builder that has that nice balance of easy to learn; hard to master. Gorgeous colours and graphical design, and while the story and voice acting may be a hair on the cheesy or cliche side, it's still charming and harmless enough to enjoy with a little suspension of disbelief. Thoroughly recommend as it is a colony sim that forgoes the concept of money entirely- showing that it is not needed for the future.

This game is Sim City in Spaaaaaaace! Or Tropico. Take your pick. You will face constant, various challenges from ever greater threats on all sides of your colony, both inside and out, but also varied and easily obtainable solutions to those problems, including auto-alerts and civics to help you micro-manage your colony even further.

Various colonies on this alien world require your help, and you will have to take a few small survival modules and build them into a vast and sprawling independent colony that anyone's cousin could take the reins of and still be successful by the end.

You will even explore zones outside of your colony, and while these are not as in depth or detailed as your primary colony, they do provide important resources and side missions for you to utilize and help you grow.

My only complaints would be there is a limited amount of storage space for all you collect, and while there are even late game solutions to this problem, even that falls flat by the very end, but it's not a huge issue. Also, there is a set number of buildings you are allowed to build in your colony, and while this can be offset somewhat by satellite outposts, it is somewhat of a disappointment.

Overall, this game gets an 8/10. There isn't a vast or diverse sound track, and even that falls flat at times, and each mission is roughly the same except the environment, but the graphics are amazing and you have full and easy 3-D movement. This is a very calm, relaxing, and fun city build sim. A very good buy.

It is not as complex as I have hoped. It gets boring extremely quickly. Sure you can do the challange modes, but still - you get into the endgame with all tech within an hour, and from there its just a question of making your colony bigger. Sad. I hoped for more.

So what do we have here? I think, it's best described as a mix between Surviving Mars and Anno 2205.
Overall, the experience is relaxing and not that difficult, just like in Anno 2205. The quality of the game pretends to be like in Anno, but it really is a mediocre or may be a bit higher.

If you liked Anno 2205 and ready to lower your quality threshold, then this game will surely give you a nice time.

This game is pretty, easy to control, in depth with tutorials, and very satisfying. Aven Colony is very much fun and interesting. Balance is constantly evolving and resources run out, causing the poor planner much stress. There are interesting encounters with alien species that affect your colony in different ways. It offers both a campaign and sandbox modes to provide some variety.

I grabbed this game during a Team 17 game sale for 3 USD. I didn't expect much of it but I saw that it had favorable reviews and decided to give it a whirl. Turns out that Aven Colony is actually a pretty good game! I won't lie and say it's one of the best games I've ever played or one of my favorites, but I enjoyed playing through the campaign.

The story is mostly non-existent, but what is there is pretty meh. The final cutscene is pretty laughable to be honest. Probably the most annoying part of the game were the voice-over story parts during the campaign missions that you cannot skip and have to sit through in order to finish the mission. Gameplay is quite fun for a non-combat RTS though. Managing an expanding colony can be quite challenging on many of the maps, and I was punished for my overconfidence many times. It also looks really cool so that definitely helps make the gameplay interesting.

Overall, I would recommend this game but only if it's on sale. I don't think it's worth full-price but for 10 USD I think it's a fair amount of content and fun.

I've never played a colony sim before and I felt that this game was a good entry point which is why i recommend it for those who are like me and wanted to try this genre out; That said, I totally understand the negative reviews and mostly agree with them. The story isn't very memorable but the voice acting isn't too bad; had a good couple of chuckles. I feel like this game really could have been more if the developer just added a couple more systems (Ex. Like the rovers rolling around your base at the start of a mission; that would have been cool to use and/or perhaps the use of Fog to hide your surrounding area so you can have a little wonder). The game's current content at the sale price of $8 i bought it for should really be the actual price of the game if you ask me.

Graphically the game is stunning and well made. Mechanically, it's just building the same structures over and over again in the same sequence until you win. There's very little depth to any of the mechanics, research is as simple as building the structure and then toggling it to research everything.

So the game was 5/10. I like the concept of the game but it seems like is a dumb down version of other colony survival games. It needs more and the game is very easy to play and there isnt much to do in the game. Got the game for $5.99 and that seems how much the game is worth. Glad i didnt pay full price on it. I say get it but only if its on sale. Its a thumbs down for me because im going off of full price on the game.

#80 Aven Colony

Its a satisfying colony sim, that not so grind heavy you regret playing. It provide enough challenges that you have to think about the direction you want to go. The only real problem i had with it: once you figure out the challenge it gets simple and easy. In other words, the challenge doesn't stick through the entire scenario. The UI is simple to navigate, often times giving you multiple ways to get the info you want. I haven't done any of the challenges and i currently have a sandbox game that i am 24 days into, but the overall game is well made and fun to play.

The citizens get whiney, often complaining that that crime is to high, when it shows no crime, or they don't have enough tunnels to get where they want to go, when you have tunnels surrounding everything. One aspect i found to be annoying was the referendum votes. They're awful. One reason, you have to have a colonist satisfaction rating of 50% or higher. I never dropped below 65%, and that's even with the level where everything is falling apart. At that point, why even put the vote in there.

Graphics are sharp, but the some of the animations are a but stiff, and the sound was bit annoying. Some of the VO's i had to turn my volume way up to hear them, then the sound came back on super strong when they were done talking. Not earth shattering though, or game breaking.

Overall: 7/10
Its not Banished hard on normal difficulty, but it is a sold entry in the genre.

Aven Colony is not a bad game, it just lacks some meat on the bones. Once you have done a full run of the gameplay loop, upgrading buildings and figuring out how everything ties together it quickly becomes apparent that the game has little left to offer you.

The negative events the game throws at you are easily ignored, even on your first run they are little more than an annoyance, and winter where food stocks are supposed to be low are easily negated by just building more.

Citizens are just window dressing and have an odd sense of what relates to distance traveled, but at least this adds some difficulty to an otherwise run of the mill colony builder that has little challenge to offer the player.

Beautiful visuals and lovely music with some decent voice acting, unfortunately these do not come together to add value to a game that just needed something more, you will find yourself clicking through available upgrades without worrying about what you are spending and not seeing a noticeable difference in trying to spoil your colonists with exotic goods.

It just did not come together as a whole and felt like everything other than the building aspect was designed in parallel and never quite manages to close the gap.

Really neat sandbox strategy game, great game play and lots of options to build the settlement further. The graphics are wonderful and the missions are straight forward. I also like the expeditions, and sandbox world. My only suggestion would be a better organised buildings tab, sorted by buildings that produce and ones that don't. Like the chemical lab and the mill in one tab as they both produce products. It's just a hassle to have to scroll through 8 air filters, and 6 of this to find the one you're looking for.

For years I have been a fan of Surviving Mars even though its domes design never made any sense to me. Aven module design of the colony is much more practical and interesting to me. Resource management UI is well simplified and eliminates most of micromanagement chores.
Still the game relatively lacks complexity as a city building genre. Building choices are limited and modding doesn't seem to be possible.
I believe the most interesting and addictive aspect of Surviving Mars is the management of logistics - moving resources for construction, consumption, and trade. While Aven has many interesting features, I believe it needs much more improvement to match the competitors.

Contrary to some major review sites, this was a perfectly serviceable space-themed city builder that had a fun campaign, decent story, and quality balance - it's not the easiest city builder nor is it the hardest even on Insane difficulty, but some of the achievements are a legitimate challenge. For example, the speedrun to beat Vanaar in 5 sols I had to restart 4 times, the 5th time I finished in sol 4, fall 20 with 1 season to spare (barely). As for price, I believe I waited for a 50% sale and bought outright, no bundle and it was definitely worth that.

I had a good time with it. I almost finished the campaign before I got bored. I should probably finish it. It requires a little more depth to be a great game. I hope the developer can add to it or the next iteration.

I really enjoyed this game -- the pacing is good, and I found it easy as heck to drop hours into it at a time. It's not too hard, but there's a little bit of a learning curve, nor too easy. The tutorial/initial missions do a good job of introducing a person to the mechanics of the game too. It can get a bit repetitive on the formula, but the challenge ramps up enough to keep the later missions from getting dull imo.

I played it all the way through but still cannot recommend it. The graphics are nice and the game play is smooth. The music is pretty generic stuff. It doesn't move you or even get your attention ever. It's just boring background noise. I played it all the way through in about 15 hours which doesn't scream value to me either.

All that aside my biggest complaint about the game is you cannot set limits on things you manufacture. No, instead I have 20 storage facilities full of rice and watermelons... I run out of flour constantly because I can't set how many pies and how much pasta to make. It's just churn it out until you run out. This game desperately needs production limits... Did I mention this game needs production limits? I'm pretty sure I haven't mentioned production limits...

The game itself becomes pretty redundant as well. The same things happening constantly. There's an election pop up that drives me nuts as well. No matter what you're doing, no matter what menu you're in everything shuts down because you have to know about the upcoming election 15 times before it happens.

The story was ok. It was why I finished the game at all. It wasn't that I found running out of iron, the most abundant resource in the universe, enthralling...

Alright. There are lots of mixed reviews for this title. I played the entire campaign and completed all challenges and spent over 150 hours on this game. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Game was fairly well thought-out. Challenges took some time to achieve and not only were they not impossible, but they did not make me hate playing the game or feel like it was a relentless grind. This is a solid casual building game with good variety and surprisingly good graphics. Could there be more content/complexity or could it have been done better? Sure. No game is perfect. For the price I would give this a solid 5/6 stars. A few more challenges or campaign maps would be awesome. If you enjoy city building and survival games like banished then this is perfect and should provide quite a few hours of fun. I would write more, but I want to try a faster speed run of the full campaign on insane mode now.....

First, a caveat that I don't have a lot of hours in the game so far but, sufficiently impressed that I felt the need to post a review (which I don't normally do); I've been playing my first session for 8 hours now, and its almost 2am ...lol.
I bought this on a whim during a sale at a price I couldn't refuse and was more than pleasantly surprised. The tutorial campaigns give you the basics so its easy to get into the game and then the missions during the game lead you along to expand your knowledge and experience. I'm sure I've just scratched the surface of Aven Colony but, my impression so far is that it strikes a nice balance; not overly complex but, challenging at the same time. I'm looking forward to discovering what else the game offers.
If you like city building and resource management games, this is definitely worth a buy if you can get it on sale.

If you are looking at reviews to decide if you wanna play this game or not its really not that hard. Buy this game now if its on 50%+ sale. 30€ is waaayy to much for this game. If there comes more story missions (The story mode missions are worth the game in it self). it would maybe be worth. I have played this game 15 hours. That is all the story missions on normal mode. The game is great fun and i found myself opening the game again and again. When you play the game you will forget what you did for 10 seconds ago if someone were to ask because you will always be on your toes. Saying that, its not a super stressful game. There is some heated moments but they are more fun that stressful.

10/10 would play again

I fully believe that the most important feature of building games is to be accessible, which puts them in an entirely different paradigm of design from other kinds of games. Platformers and shooters and third-person action games can all succeed and even excel in being aggressively onerous to players, but I honestly can’t see a brutal, hardcore building sim ever taking off. It might be why I’ve grown so fond of Aven Colony lately, because it offers a fair bit of variety with little more than a brief learning hump. What it might lack in depth, it makes up for with charm, polish, and colorful environs to sprawl your colony across.

In the far-flung future, humanity has set its eyes on colonizing the stars in proper utopian, Star Trek fashion. Their newest endeavor is Aven Prime, a vibrant alien world of vast plains, craggy valleys, and some very unfriendly life forms. Despite the dangers, you have been tasked with founding and overseeing several colonies on the surface, each tasked providing resources or living accommodations for the expatriated humans. As you progress through your missions, though, you’ll come across strange relics of a bygone civilization, and begin to unravel a mystery eons in the making. If the creep spores and ice storms don’t do your colony in, the secrets uncovered in your journey just might.

Aven Colony is broken into three modes, including a Campaign of nine missions, a set of four Challenge maps, and a customizable Sandbox using any of the maps in the game. Regardless of the mode you choose, the heart of the game is founding and fostering a functioning colony by making use of the map’s resources and laying out your settlement accordingly. Your people need homes, food, water, clean air, and power, and as the colony grows new needs for security, entertainment, and more will certainly arise. There are facilities to provide for everything a growing community needs but they need enough people to operate them, so the main balancing act of the game is building out the necessary services for the population you have. Spread them too thin or neglect key needs, and you might find yourself out of a job come the next referendum.

There are a few unique features afforded by the game’s sci-fi trappings, but as I mentioned these are easy enough to come to grips with. The atmosphere of Aven Prime is not suitable for humans so your colony is sealed up tight, meaning air quality must be managed and glass corridors take the place of roads. Your buildings naturally fit together like puzzle pieces but your fussy colonists greatly prefer to commute via corridor, so you’ll still need to place workplaces near residences and leave clear avenues between them. Each of the planet’s long days ends with a deep freeze, similar to a mini-winter in Banished, and this greatly curtails food and power production and must be planned for. Getting a feel for just how much food and water larger populations need is something I’m still working on, so you can expect to be caught with empty stores a few times.

Unlike Banished, though, over-expanding or starving your people won’t end with a mass extinction of simulated humans. Colonists in Aven Colony will just get mad and maybe leave. There are seven difficulty levels so I’m sure you can make the margins as tight as you want, but on Normal the game is blessedly forgiving while still requiring a little competence in colony management. Maps also offer unique challenges that give your building some much-needed variety, like ore deposits being poor and requiring you to spread further than you might, or arid deserts leaving you only scattered patches of ground to farm on. The assortment of buildings you have to construct are pretty constant, and most if not all of your colonies will end up featuring the same structures. It’s the scenery, the deadly fauna, and in the Campaign the varied objectives that keep this one from stagnating.

Most of all, it’s fun. Aven Colony is easy to get into, easy to understand, and easy to build gorgeous sci-fi cities in. The basics will carry you for hours, but once you get your bearings there’s a little more depth to discover in places like manufactured enhancers and world map expeditions. Between the art style and the solid sound design, which includes some shockingly good voice work, there’s enough to please the senses that just growing a new settlement much like others before it is engaging. As long as you’re not expecting huge depth or variety here, Aven Colony will serve you quite well as a colorful, relaxing city builder to putter around in.

Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!
