I love this game, I loved it ever since I was a little girl. If you are into classic games, or if you are into simple and low stress level games, this is the game for you! Super bummed the pixels on the cut scenes are so lacking, It's like I'm looking through a grate or something. I haven't looked into why this is occurring on my computer or if others are seeing this issue so take that with a grain of salt.

While still an engaging game with great presentation, this game somewhat lost what made the first two games great. That feeling of mystery and suspense that defined the franchise up to that point. All-in-all, this third game is more of the same. The only main difference is the difficulty level - it's enough to make the experience frustrating, instead of fun. Nostalgia glasses required! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2569140526 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2549168496

Tomb Raider 3
Completion August 04, 2021
Main+Extras 38h 16m 56s
Notes 14 of 59 secrets (All Hallows not played)
+Level design improved over previous game
+The new crawling and running abilities adds further depth to areas and puzzle
+The use of a puzzle box style level was well done
-Non linear playing of levels hurts the game
-Levels can still go on too long
-Paints Lara as a psychopath and representation of oceania people is a very bad generalisation
Overview: Tomb raider 3 improves it’s level design over the 2nd game with some new styles of levels and introduction of crawling and running really increase the variety of the puzzle and game play and made me in terms of the gameplay preferred it over tomb raider 2. Unfornately the levels started going on too long and the non linear playing of levels hurt especially when one section removes all your guns and doesn’t return them at all. The story also paint Lara out as a psychopath who will kill anyone who gets in her way and has practically a bad and misplaced representation of the ocenanic people which really comes off as racist. It really puts a sour taste in the mouth.

In 99 I was discovering TR3 onto my brother's computer.
I immediately developed a sense of appreciation to see a woman as the protagonist of a history seasoned legend game; on top of that, the incredible look of lara put the first insecurity seed inside my brain. Each time I played, it was so short lived; within the first minute, as I was sliding down the ramp, my alter ego was getting abruptly crushed, just like lara's body in the spikes. Its title was saying 'demo' so as a less-than-a-decade old self-professed gamer, I knew that I was not going to get the whole experience. Days, weeks went by until my mind was blown when I realised there is a world past those spikes; and once I mastered spike jumping, nothing was going to stop me from playing the game for an eternity.

That eternity was until the demo reached its end, at about half of the first level. From that point onwards, I replayed the demo so many times, hoping that I would maybe find one last shortcut, one last secret, one last artefact. Sadly, I have exhausted every corner of the demo and I was thirsty for more. When finally discouraged, I broke up with TR3, it kept me asking for more for too long. I thought that I will never hear from it again.

After what seemed like forever, there I was standing face to face with TR3 one again. But we were both changed. I was a teenager, covertly frustrated by the fact that I have never developed like my pixelated idol; and TR3 has developed too, taking more space in the computer, as a full game now. We agreed unanimously that we have to spend some quality time together like the good old times, and soon. Postponing any real-life activity, I have remet lara and went together on endless adventures through so many places that never made me question their verity. It was very challenging, taking me through conflicting emotions and making me ready to throw the keyboard and exit the game. But as every worthy relationship takes work, I mentally matured in real time and refused to let go of lara before our time was up. I became so possessive towards TR3, not letting anyone else play the game without going through all stages of grief. Even so, there were times when I reached out to outside help to get through the difficulties lara was getting.

Once I finished the game, I felt so exhausted, so sad that it was ending, but also so done with all the cr4p lara put me through. I was free again to enjoy other games, but as sickly in love as I was, I rebounded into playing every TR I could find, finding them so close to TR3 but just not quite as ecstasy-inducing and challenging. Only future-released TRA gave me a memory glimpse of TR3.

Like every passionate love story, I have decided it's best to move on and find new loves to entertain my mind to the point of not hearing my mother come to tell me to go to bed at 2am. So, I moved on, I almost forgot it all. I nurtured my care for other games, I rediscover the true love other titles have given me.

…Until about 3 weeks ago when I received TR3 as a cheer-up gift. I timidly reminisced the few memories that survived the time we’ve been apart, and casually decided to give it a little try, for the old times sakes. Like a love story turned sour this time, I found it terribly difficult to navigate, the controls were…well, out of control; and the difficulty of the game. The difficulty of the game. It all made sense now. It was not that the other TR are not as easy, it was that TR3 is eye-watering hard, frustrating and inflexible. Cascading memories of the only blue lit room in the neighbourhood night, the urges to say curses yet not invented, crafting lara’s shorts with laundry pegs, mildly planning to go discover the jungles and sunken cities.

They all came back when I started TR3 once again in 2021. But once again I am different, in my late 20s, with a full list of experiences that tested my patience. Yet TR3 is as bratty and spoilt as ever. I continued to develop. I now have a forehead wrinkle. Yet lara is as perky as ever, reminding me that the time has not passed for her. The pixelated psychedelics captivated me years ago, yet today they give me the sweet taste of nostalgia. I would not accept this sort of difficult mechanics today; but the things TR3 was capable of making me feel 20 years ago was very rarely matched along the line.

TL;DR recommended, go play it.

TR3 surely out did the previous series in Story telling as well as Level design. Though the 3D model and texture art fell to an amateur level, like a patchwork mess, clearly the 3D model maker has trouble mapping the texture on the surface. The game still uses the old engine from TR1 & 2 with a lot of improvements, probably because they don't need to start from scratch giving the coders a lot of spare time to experiment other stuffs. Like flexible hair that won't go through the body, particle effects making fire. smoke and fog, even the steam coming out of Lara's mouth. Little details. The hair part is amazing... because that's not seen in other 3D games until late 2012... and this game already achieve it back in 1998...

Overall this is a great game, the only downfall is the patchwork textures that's pretty messy on the 3D models and some camera issues. Other than that, this game is almost perfect. The story telling part is one huge improve from the previous TR series, showing true TR originality in it. And with this being a great start, setting up an example pattern for future TR series.

I simultaneously love and hate this game with a passion.

When it comes to the PS1 Tomb Raider games, Tomb Raider III has a special place in my heart. I loved playing it as a kid for PS1 back in the day.

BUT

This game can be frustrating as all hell. Some levels and puzzles are just ridiculously difficult for absolutely no reason, and that's meaning something considering that in the PC version you can save as often as you want without any consequences.

With that being said, though, most of the levels are really quite fun and just occasionally have passages that are really mean or unfair.
The jungle and Nevada levels are among my favourite levels of the entire series and they are the reason I find myself coming back to Tomb Raider III every now and then, even after all these years.

Tomb Raider 3 takes the TR1 and 2 formula and improves it further with new moves, allows you to choose in which sequence you wil play each story arc and takes the difficulty to a whole new level.

You'll immediately notice the tune up in the difficulty right in the first level, where you can be impaled by lethal spikes within seconds of starting the game and that's how it will be until you finish the game. It's almost unfair how the game tries to kill you in every corner you turn, forcing you to save the game frequently to avoid being killed by a trap you haven't even seen yet because of the camera.

The level design has been improved even further than the last time and you will have to explore every dark little corner to find your way. Unfortunately the pacing will be interrupted by the cheap kind of traps I mentioned but well, that's how this game is. I just wish the locations weren't so urban focused. Lara belongs in ruins and temples, not in the middle of the city. Fortunately, that was fixed in the next game but I won't talk about TR4 in this review.

The graphics are even better than before, with new particle effects, transparency and better sounds. It's still an unoptimized game for modern systems and I still had to use a keymapper and unofficial fanmade patches to make it look and play better.

Storywise it's not as exciting as the other games but it's still entertaining enough. Better than any modern TR, I may add.

To sum it up, it's a classic TR game and as such, it deserves to be played if you're a fan of the classics. Like I stated in my other TR reviews, I grew up playing these games and I just can't have enough of it, even after all this time. Give it a try but be ready for all the unfairness it will throw your way. Beating this game gives you bragging rights, lol.

I would recommend this game to TR players that have not played this particular installment before, as it has many fantastic features that are not included in the previous two games. The new actions that Lara is capable of performing make for a more real life experience given how she can explore her immediate environment in ways that were not possible in the first two games. With new actions like sprinting, crawling and traversing across certain ceiling types, players can definitely get a more enjoyable experience when playing this game. This game also comes with new weapons that I certainly enjoyed using and still do enjoy to this day, such as the Desert Eagle, MP5 and rocket launcher. The addition of these weapons make for a unique arsenal that players can use as they see fit. Tomb Raider 3 also comes with 4 new vehicles, them being the UPV (Underwater Propulsion Vehicle), quad bike, dingy and the kayak. These definitely made for a more enjoyable experience as they provide players with new methods of exploration, which itself was more limited in the previous installment. The new gunshot sounds were also interesting, especially for the pistols, shotgun and uzis as they more closely resembles real life gunshot sounds and made for a more evolved game overall. I also liked the new costumes that were introduced in this game, especially given the fact that each one was specific to each region of the game. Another interesting aspect of this game was the ability to explore certain regions in any desired order, starting with India, then the Nevada, London and South Pacific levels coming next in any order of the players choice, and then ending with the Antarctica levels, the last of which contains levels with water of sub-zero temperatures that can kill Lara at an even quicker pace by freezing her to death. This feature in particular is interesting because it makes for a more realistic experience when playing these levels by giving us an insight into what can happen when one is immersed in such freezing water. The last thing I liked about this game was the ability to unlock a secret level known as All Hallows, which is an extra London level that can only be unlocked by finding all 59 (or 60) secrets, therefore providing players with a challenge that will be rewarded, should it be completed. The design of this level is interesting due to the church-like interior, the inclusion of chandeliers with lit candles on them and the overall layout of the level itself. This game is definitely a must buy for TR fans and is probably my favourite of the original trilogy.

So after settling with Tomb Raider 2, TR3 is even more content, more abilities for Lara and featuring big levels with multiple pathways and non linear design. This is a great one!

Despite the dizzying level design and how ancient it is, this game is still enjoyable to play. Not my favourite TR, but still worth a recommendation. It was great fun back in the old days and it was a pleasure to get back to it.

Another classic, the puzzles and secrets and a little harder and more hidden than Tomb Raider I and II. Old style gameplay without autosaves or checkpoints.
