Inspired by chess, but adding combat that YOU control, Archon was the original Battle Chess. You must try to outmaneuver your opponent using teams of fantasy creatures or monsters in this epic struggle of Light and Dark. On the chess board, when you challenge a piece, you are teleported into a Combat Arena where you fight in REAL-TIME until only the victor emerges to claim the square on the chess board. Conquer your opponent by defeating all of their pieces on the chess board or claim all the Power Squares for a quick victory! You can play Free-For-All mode, where it's everyone for themselves, or play using teams and gang up on your opponents pieces in battle (2 vs. 1.)
Archon:Classic can be played using USB controllers (the best way) or with keyboard and mouse. First developed in 1983, Archon quickly became a hit and instant classic because of it's unique combination of action and strategic gameplay. Der Spielehit vom 64er. Mein Grund, überhaupt einen Steamclient zu installieren. Tolle Umsetzung und die neuen zusätzlichen Modi bringen Spaß

Ein Klassiker der Spielgeschichte... in diesem Game hat mein großer Bruder mich abgezogen seit ich 4 Jahre alt war ... damals allerdings noch auf dem C64 ;-)

Nice upgrade of an old game I played on the Commodore 64 and always loved.

Surprisingly faithful classic mode.

Not a totally mind-blowing modernisation, but certainly a better than expected one.

Excellent remake of a classic. This is made even better with secondary attacks for most of the pieces. This mixed with three and four player mode (with humans or AI - Team battles), all on gamepads, makes for an excellent couch co-op game on top of the robust campaign.

I still vividly remember how nice a package this was for the C64. The pack itself was an artwork... it was like a giant, black and white, square shaped envelope; and it housed the precious floppy disk for the 1541 drive.
The game was a must have back then, and is a great trip down memory lane now !!
I received this game as a gift from a very generous Steam Member.

Loving it. It is not an exact copy of the original, but honestly an upgrade. While it does take some getting used to, as a new player, it does hold some of the original quirks when doing remote play or multiplayer. I would recommend for a blast from the past.

I really wanted to like it.

I loved the old Commodore 64 version when I was a kid, but my entire combat strategy revolved around kiting, and you can't do that in this PC port. It feels like playing at high latency. If your opponent is chasing you, and you want to shoot at it, you cannot simply hit that direction key and fire. You must stop and begin running towards your opponent before you will be allowed to fire. It's only a few tenths of a second required, but by that time you're usually dead.

Authentic reproduction of the classic from the 1980s. I played it as a kid and now my son loves it too.

Awesome remake of an old (almost obscure) C64 game. Kind of like chess with mythical beasts except you get a chance to fight your opponent in an arena. I love this! thanks for the remake

The remake of this classic game is almost excellent! The graphics are modern (ok it might not be top notch like in Dota2 but still it’s a great visuals to performance ratio).
We have many new features which introduces a little bit more complexity to the original gameplay in respect to the strategic and RPG element of it.
The new features include: campaign mode (actually 2 campaigns for light and 2 for dark), different layouts (boards), secondary abilities, different kind of magic squares, different difficulty levels and finally we have piece leveling up (up to third level).

My only complaint is about the multiplayer - it should really be implemented as some sort of LAN or steam server matchmaking and not a hotseat.
Anyway it’s definitely worth the $10!

A wonderful remake of the Atari 8 bit classic Archon. Graphics and sound are fine, but it's the great gameplay that makes this game so enjoyable.
The original Archon only had one game board and no campaigns. This game has many different game boards and some interesting and challenging campaigns. I've put a lot of hours into the campaigns and more than got my moneys worth.

This game successfully updates the original 8-bit classic, updating the game with more boards and more options. It's hard as heck to beat, though. But it brought back the thrill of gaming in a way I haven't felt in a long time! A must for classic Archon fans! This is the real deal.... highly reccommended.

Dragon to E4! Archon classic is a remake of an old 80's game of the same name. The game consists of a chess like board and pieces and a turn based game built around them. When a piece is taken however, the battleground shifts to a top down 1 on 1 perspective and the pieces shoot it out in a real time battle. The pieces are a variety of fantasy monsters with unicorns, golems and a phenoix on the light side and goblins, wraiths and a dragon on the dark side and all the pieces have unique attacks to use on the battleground. The game also comes with a swathe of modes and board varients and has all the original graphics for optional use also. The classic in the game title is very apt.

- fun with friends
- awesome strategy, the variety leads to some memorable battles. Sometimes a goblin will just prove unkillable and slay monster after monster

Bad

- no controller support

This game is great, genius concept, heaps of fun.

I still can't believe no one picked this up when it came out, a faithful remake of a fantastic multiplayer game!
for those like myself who have enjoyed archon for years, online play is an amazing addition, and for everyone who missed this gem from the past : if you like the sound of turn based strategy mixed with furious action, check it out, it's cheap!
