PS.:
Eins der erlebnisreichsten, atemberaubensten Spiele die ich jeh spielen konnte. Nun leider jetzt wohl nicht mehr.
(Note 1: I played Guild Wars 2 for almost 3 years before getting this game. A lot of my views are informed by that baseline. Also this game was 13-years old by the time I started it, and the active playerbase is super low.)
(Note 2: I used Idle Master to be able to leave a review, because the app itself doesn't have its own store page. See my profile for my real playtime.)
A quite good and unique party-based online instanced* RPG. Recommended, if you don't mind playing it basically as a single-player game. (Also it adds to the enjoyment if you're familiar with GW2.)

* The outposts and towns are areas shared with other players, but outside of these, the combat zones are instanced only for your party.

The good:

+ You can build your own team of hero NPCs, and run around with a small army.
+ You can mix two professions and change the secondary one whenever you're not in an instance.
+ The different campaigns have very different themes and environments. My favourite is Factions, which has an East Asian theme.
+ The soundtrack is superb, although it gets a bit monotonous if you stay on one map too long. I hadn't realised how much of it they lifted over to GW2 unchanged. (Edit: Sadly it was composed by sexual abuser Jeremy Soule, yuck.)
+ Build templates! You can save profession/attribute/skill choices into txt files, and manage them via the game UI. You can also share the builds via template codes, and load other people's builds onto your team this way.
+ The game offers either mouse or WASD movement. You can also select a player/NPC/object and automatically run to it.
+ The UI and hotkeys are very customisable.
+ I actually like that I can play this as a single-player game. I tend to prefer solo play in GW2 too.
+ This version of the game includes GOTY bonus items, one of which is a very helpful summonable ally. Some bonus weapons are decent too.
+ Last, but not least, as a GW2 player it's really awesome to experience all the places and stories I only heard of as historical events.

Mixed:

~ Very diverse skill and build options. It gives you great freedom, but it can also be quite overwhelming for a new player. You pretty much need to look up build guides because the game is complex and doesn't shy away from throwing difficult challenges at the player. (Here's a very good guide for beginners.)
~ I haven't finished any of the campaigns yet, but the writing quality seems all over the place. The plotlines and dialogues are mostly serviceable, but there are some very cringy moments and the characterisations are quite weak. 200+ hours into the game I haven't witnessed any character development from either the player character or the NPC heroes.
(I mean, there was an out-of-nowhere romantic triangle scene among my NPC heroes, but it was so badly paced, I'd rather forget about it.)
I know a lot of fans love the story, but I didn't find it super-engaging.
(My lack of engagement might be partly because I extensively played this game's ~250 years future, so I osmosed a lot of its major plot points as world history.)
That said, the side quest descriptions and dialogues are often quite funny.
~ The graphics are nice for their age, but they are 14-years old, which shows, especially in the character models and animations.

The bad:

Most of the negatives are due to the game's age.
- The movement is clunky and sluggish, characters are prone to some rubberbanding and getting hit by melee attacks while already half a screen away. Positioning is said to be an important aspect of combat, but it's a pain in the arse to execute. I also miss GW2's jumping: it's kinda annoying to have to do long detours due to small obstacles that I could just jump over in the sequel.
- No auction house. Getting maxed-out weapons is a pain in the arse, as the only way is to sit in a specific city on the American servers, keep shouting on trade chat, and hope that another player who has that item happens to be on the same map at the time. Due to the low player population even this method is not particularly reliable. The experience is so miserable, that I pretty much gave up on getting fully optimised weapons.
- The game is much more difficult compared to GW2. I often feel I'm struggling with particular quests, while in GW2 this pretty much never happens, even though in that game I only control a single character, not an 8-member squad like here.
- The voice acting is very wooden.
- Might be a stretch to miss this from a 2005 game, but there's no wardrobe system. Want a different look for your maxed-out weapon? Too bad, you can't just change the skin, you need to get a whole new weapon from scratch.
- There are some annoying automated announcements that can't be muted without using an illegal 3rd-party tool, and some of them not even with that. (People winning at a specific game mode, people on your map gaining new skill points or leveling up.)
- The price tags on smaller DLC content on the game's website are ridiculously high, even the devs admitted it. Also you can't convert ingame money to a currency that you could use to buy the premium content, like in GW2.
- I heard others complain about the copious amount of botting, but I'm quite a new player and don't play PvP, so I only see the same 2 goldseller spambots in the trading city, but those are constantly present.

Finishing notes:

This game is much more enjoyable if you're already familiar with GW2. The awesome lore immersion helps to balance out all the aged, non-player-friendly aspects of the game. Still, it's a solid party-based RPG. If you enjoy complex and challenging games of this genre, this game might be right up your alley.

GW1 has a small but extremely committed playerbase still playing after 14 years. GW2's Hall of Monument feature also brings in a small, but steady trickle of new players to the game, especially now that they started doing sales again. [strike]I wish more than 2 devs still worked on this game, it could really do with some modern polish, or at least someone who bans the spambots. (Btw the game still gets updates a couple of times a year.)[/strike] Edit: The main dev who still worked on the game left since I wrote the review, and as far as I can see there's no one working on it any more.

PS. If you do pick up the game, the official wiki is an invaluable resource. (Link)

The graphics are a delight to look at ( especially considered the first game was made in 2005 ! ) , great gameplay, interesting and fun character creation and skill system. I am really falling in love with this game!
I also play D&D online, and I love that game too. The big differense between these two is definately to GW`s advantage: GW has a way better story(ies), it is much easier to play single ( which I prefer, and many with me),
- And : You buy the game once, and then it is fully paid ! With D&D online and most other MMORPGs , you have to pay a fee continually .
Think I`m gonna play this for years! :)))

Added to my review :
I had some trouble when I needed to contact GW support, - which seemed impossible for a while, and I stopped playing . This might be one reason a lot of people left GW1, even if they loved it .
It does not say so anywhere - but to contact support, you have to contact the GW2 support ! It`s really strange that the devs never added an easy way to do that , - there is no way to find out in game options !
Even worse ; I was able to purchase in-game items, like armour appearance, - but these items never showed up in my inventory !
How come , when the support and devs left this game - what they obviously did ! Why could`t they simply add a click to reach them , - and Really !!! Remove the option to purchase stuff that`s not available any more !!!??!

For those of you who might need it : GW 2 support :

support@guildwars2.com

This should maybe be a reason for me giving GW1 my thumb down - but I still choose not to, because it is so much fun to play !

One of the best MMO's on the market, I love the engaging story the most which is followed by good combat solo or a group of great players that fills the world of guild wars. A must play for any mmo fan.
