Über das Spiel

Info section:
Nuclear War Simulator is a detailed realistic simulation and visualization of large-scale nuclear conflicts with a focus on humanitarian consequences. There are currently over 13000 nuclear weapons on this planet of which over 9000 are in military stockpiles. This software should help you answer the question: what will happen if Russia and the United States or India and Pakistan use their arsenals? You can design warheads, missiles and carries, place them on the map and execute attack plans to tell a credible story about how nuclear conflicts play out and what are the consequences. Using a high-resolution population density map and realistic weapons effects like blast, heat and radiation you can make an estimate of how many people will die in a conflict.

Nuclear conflict scenarios
You can design realistic large-scale scenarios between major powers with thousands of warheads. Scenarios can be created manually where you can assign each warhead individually or with the assistance of an AI for faster targeting. It is also possible to simulate whole conflicts with a few clicks on the map interactively. You can download scenarios created by other people and upload your scenarios to the mods.io server.

Realistic effects of nuclear weapons
The simulation includes a high-resolution population density grid. The effects of blast, heat, fires and radiation are calculated and visualized for each population cell to estimate fatalities (similar to Alex Wellerstein’s NUKEMAP). The destruction of military targets is simulated using a model considering the CEP of the weapon, target hardness and cratering. You can place yourself, your family and friends into the simulation to estimate the expected injuries and survival probability. The amount of burnt fuel and produced soot are also calculated to estimate the effects of nuclear winter using a simplified model.

Design and placement of objects
Using an intuitive UI you can design warheads, place them on missiles and into silos, on aircraft, TELs and submarines. You can then place the forces onto the map simply clicking on it or importing real-world locations from KMZ files.
If you know how much uranium and plutonium is needed for one warhead, you can estimate how many can be build from today’s stockpiles if a country wants to.

Modding and interfaces
The simulation supports some basic modding of unit textures, loading screens and background music. It is also possible to share unit blueprints and scenarios with others. If you have simulated a conflict in another tool you can import the list of detonations as a simple CSV file to calculate the humanitarian effects. On the other hand, you can also export the list of detonations together with the burnt soot into other tools like detailed climate simulations.

Features:
  • Detailed effects of nuclear weapons, accurate reports on affects/results (including but not limited to radiation zones, casualties and fires)
  • Realistic delivery systems, up-to-date full known arsenal of main world powers.
  • Sandbox to design weapon systems and build conflict scenarios.
  • Individual civilians moving on the map and taking shelter.
  • 22+ predefined editable scenarios.
  • In-game mod upload and download. (instant synchronisation)
  • Adjustable AI.
  • Integrated early warning and Missile Defence systems.

To preface: I am NOT a professional and this review is solely my own opinion.

(Please read all the way through.)

I really anticipated this simulator's release, it seemed extremely promising and interesting to try out. Upon booting it up(after having various problems while starting it up, mainly with the UI), my first discovery was that some features were so unoptimized that they're almost unusable. To add onto that, the UI is very difficult to navigate and generally an eyesore(which imo, a good UI and navigability is key to a good simulator). I was also extremely disappointed at the quality of the map and think a simulator like this could benefit heavily from a quality, detailed map with a higher resolution, and not what feels like a big screenshot of Google Earth. Those are only the surface level problems that come to mind, and specifying the other UI issues that exist in the sim is unnecessary and would take a lot of time. Also, this title is far too overpriced for what it currently offers. From the UI to functionality, it just isn't worth 30 dollars. This is certainly not very user-friendly(though, some good sims aren't).

However! This title is a very rare breed right now, and there aren't a lot of simulators like it. If you're looking for a nuclear simulation that is far more complex than Alex Wellerstein's NUKEMAP(a predecessor of nuke sims), this is your best alternative. Looking past the UI issues, it still does almost all of what it says it can do, and in better detail than any other simulator like it(that I know of). This is a huge step in the genre of nuclear simulations and I believe it has a ton of potential to grow and improve. In no way do I intend this review to be inflammatory, it's genuinely my own account based on the experience that I had when trying out the simulator, and I truly look forward to see how it improves overtime.

With how pricey it is for what it offers, I'd recommend buying it when it goes on sale or if you'd like it as a gift from someone. If you have 30 dollars you don't mind spending, then I'd recommend checking this simulator out.

[b]Tl;dr: It's jank, overpriced and a bit underwhelming but functionally works great and is one of a kind right now. Would recommend.

Most of the negative reviews are from people who were confused as to what this is, this is an extremely accurate and detailed simulation of nuclear weapons, not a game. However, it is somewhat overpriced, and while I am eager to see where it goes, I very much think that at least at it's current state it's not exactly worth 30 dollars. I still recommend it for those who really, really find this stuff interesting and want to try it for themselves, it's basically nukemap but far, far more capable.

Price is more than twice than what would be nice.

I wanted to like this. I really did. But this is not ready for prime time. In its current state it is definitely not worth the asking price. Perhaps later, when it is more fully flushed out I'll give it another go. But I just requested and received a refund from Steam for the first time ever. There's a good foundation here to build something remarkable. But in it's current state, $30 is way too much to be asking.

First of is this a simulation and learning toll, not a game. Understanding that, it is quite well developed. The visualizations are very good, but the number crunching of effects are top-notch. Scenario editing is very helpful. The ability to export the results makes it extremely useful for me.

Also Ivan is great to work with. When I purchased this I found a serious bug with the calculation tool of which I was most interested. It turned out to be related to my GPU. Ivan had a fix within a week and I suggest all who purchase this to get the open beta just released.

Regarding the price. If you are looking for a war game, it may be pricey. For a simulation tool to generate good quality data with almost unlimited simulation possibilities, the price is actually very attractive.

If you like Stunning visuals with copious metrics this is the app for you.
