Über das Spiel

Long ago, the Dark Lord Dredmor was bound in the darkest dungeons beneath the earth by great and mighty heroes. Centuries later, the magical bonds that hold him in place are loosening and his power grows ever stronger. The land cries out for a new hero, a powerful warrior or a mystic wizard like those spoken of in the prophecies of yore.
What they have, unfortunately, is you...
Step into the Dungeons of Dredmor! Embrace your destiny! Face evil of the likes the world has never known - the terrifying Swarmies, the undulating Thrusties, and the adoreable nest-building Diggles. Worship Inconsequentia, the Goddess of Pointless Sidequests, or try your luck as a devotee of the nameless Lutefisk God. Cast powerful magic learned from the dark business warlocks of the school of Necronomiconomics, or summon the Viking Runes of your ancestors to blast your foes with thunder and lightning! Discover the power that can be had by wielding a bizarre armament of devastating weaponry such as the Interdimensional Axe, the Plastic Ring, and the Invisible Shield (if you can remember where you left it). Wield shoes decorated by the Dwarven Glittersmiths, all of whom have now committed suicide because of their shame, and embrace the joys of destroying giant moustache-wielding brick demons with a mace decorated with tawdry, delicious bacon.
While you?re at it, be prepared to die. A lot. In hideous, screaming pain that makes you throw your keyboard out the window.
The Dungeons of Dredmor await. Are you ready for them?

Key features:

  • Classic Roguelike gameplay with the sweet, refreshing taste of point-and-click interfaces. No longer must you press CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-x to drink a potion.
  • Randomly generated dungeons entice you with the sweet, sweet promises of treasure and ? things.
  • Old-school pixel goodness. Face lovingly hand-animated monsters and enjoy the great taste of beautiful, individually rendered items on top of a sea of gorgeous, potent tile-work.
  • Wield the awesome power of the Anvil of Krong, lest it wield you!
  • Incredibly complicated crafting system! Wield relics of the Great Elven/Dwarven conflict; grind down ingots to make powdered aluminum and shove it directly up your nostrils!
  • Hordes of monsters never-before-seen in a video game!
  • Deploy cunning traps to defeat your foes!
  • Infinite replay value: choose from a selection of mind-boggling skills to create your character. A new gameplay experience awaits every time!
  • Did we mention there?s lutefisk?

This was my first roguelike. Loved it. It feels like an old-school game with lots of more modern references, even if 'more modern' at this point is at least ten years old. Still, worth buying!

I'd recommend this as a one of the (contemporary) classic roguelike for someone to get into the subgenre. Saying this even after almost ten years and despite it being largely stagnant in terms of development (no sequel, developer news). Adding that now we're at a time when there's sooo many bigger roguelike games to choose from and roguelikes are no longer niche.

I'm reviewing it now because I surprised myself by ending picking this up and playing it again recently. Pushing several hours once more into it. I had so many other roguelikes to choose from that haven't been even tried or some that are my usual go-tos.

And of course, its quirky humour.

The bugs it has here and there that I found are bearable.

Edit: typo, add line(s)

It's a roguelike that tempers the frustration with an insane sense of humor. In the 9 Years i've had this game, i come back to it for a few days at a time and get a LOT of runs in in that time (i'm not very good at it, but i do enjoy it).

Lots of skill combinations to keep things fresh. Side quests, crafting, enchantment and curses, zoos, so many things to keep the game fresh and different with each run.

It's more like a parody of the rogue like genre but absolutely nails it. From the humor to the game's mechanics everything about it seems solid. Tons of ways to customize your character and some ridiculous outcomes. Great variety of enemies to slay and loot to collect. If you enjoy this kind of gaming you will definitely love this one!

It's a classic that still holds up for any Roguelike lover. The quirky references will make you smile, the customization and crafting will you keep you thinking (a fairly large list of skills and classes), and the combat will surprise you when you inevitably question what finally killed you and how.

That said, it's lacking a lot of features if you actually care about what's happening on your screen. I really really wished the character's appearance changed with the armor and abilities he/she gains. The enemies, plot, and powers either teeter on completely generic or jokey-reference. There's no in between. And while I know no one plays a rogue game for the plot, ... I like plot and there's none here.

My playtime hours is probably the time it took to develop this game . But honestly, I can't express how lucky I am that out of all the years mankind has lived, I live in the era of 21st century where I can play this game. I honestly believe every dead person out there who never played Dungeons of Dredmor must come back to life for some time and play this game. They can die again if they want. But every single human being should definitely try this. I genuinely think that the person behind the development of this game absolutely should be the richest person of the world.

This game has a lot of good memories for me. It was my first ever game on steam. And it was also a gift from a dear friend who introduced me to Steam. They gave it to me as a birthday present back in 2012. Almost 10 years ago now. Sure, it has it's quirks, but I love it. It's charming and so much fun. I've recently gotten back into playing, and I've added some mods to make it more interesting. I would recommend you to back up save files, as sometimes they can become corrupted. While I find that challenging, it also gives me the chance to start over and figure out a new plan of action. I had about 100 hours invested when I lost my save. Devastating for sure, but it's been a few years now, and I just can't help but come back to my first game. You never forget your first.

Dungeons of Dredmor is a classic roguelike in the same vein as the original Rogue from 1980, with modern sensibilities, a point and click interface and a dash of humour thrown in for good measure.

Seasoned veterans of the genre will appreciate the high quality of presentation and myriad of references to older titles, and newbies to this type of Roguelike will find that Dredmor is a much more manageable and user friendly challenge than many others in the trad-roguelike catalogue.

Dredmor differs from the norm in that there is no diagonal attacking in it, and as a whole the challenge tends to randomly spike much less than in games like Tales of Maj'Eyal or Dungeon Crawl. I would strongly recommend it as a title for people who bounced off stuff like ADOM or Nethack and want a way to get acquainted with the genre.

So how does it play? Your task is to descend the 10 (or 15 with the DLC) floors of the titular dungeon and dispatch the eponymous Dredmor who lies in wait on the lowest floor. You begin by selecting 7 out of a possible 52 skill trees that will define the way your character progresses, and you are unceremoniously dumped at the entrance of the dungeon after a short text box summarising your quest.

From there you explore each floor of the dungeon, leveling up, avoiding traps, and gaining new loot to equip your character. One of the strongest features Dredmor has is the skill system in the game, featuring jobs ranging from Big Game Hunter to Vampire, from Astrologist to Demonologist. There are professions in here you won't find in any other RPG, such as Paranormal Investigators who can transform Potions into different potions and discover crafting recipes by autopsying the bodies of monsters, or Magical Law, which lets you use the power of litigation to reset your cooldowns and silence monsters. If you're someone who just enjoys coming up with fun builds you will love the skill trees on offer here.

Once you get used to the fact that none of the stats are called what they should be called (Strength is Burliness, Spell Crit is Haywire Chance, Dexterity is Nimbleness) and once you get to grips with the 16(!) different damage types in the game which range from the usual Fire and Frost to Existential Damage (Existential damage: does it exist or not? We don't know, but your weapon may inflict it on somebody... if they exist.), the stat system in Dredmor is actually pretty fun and exploitable.

In most RPGs, stats like Armour and Dodge Rating suffer from diminishing returns as you stack them up to prevent players from becoming unkillable gods. Not so in Dungeons of Dredmor. For a lot of stats what you see on your character see translates one-to-one with your actual statstics, so if you see 100 Block on there, you block every hit. It's possible to get characters dual wielding mirror shields for 100% spell reflect, stacking encrusts (the enchant system in the game) to be immune to certain types of damage, or abusing cooldowns to parry every melee strike. It's a lot of fun.

The game isn't perfect by any means though, and there are a few problems with it. First of all the game has a crashing issue for some people that won't be fixed by the devs and isn't moddable. Secondly, the inventory management in the game quickly becomes a big part of it after you hit about Floor 4-5. There are vast array of random pickups in Dredmor, most of which you won't initially know what to use, which all supplements a complicated crafting system. There are far too many items in the game which only have one specific use for one specific profession, and it takes a lot of game play to recognise what's important to keep and what you can sell. In addition to this some of the aspects of the game feel a little half baked, for example the Dredmor fight. When you encounter him there is no change of music, no special throne room he inhabits, he is just randomly pathing around the dungeon doing nothing in particular. He's just chillin'.

You would like this game if:
a.) You like thinking up different character builds and trying them out
b.) You want a way in to the traditional roguelike genre that's user friendly
c.) You appreciate a sense of humour in your games
d.) You like really exploitable games
You won't like it if:
a.) You hate inventory management and crafting
b.) You are a roguelike purist who baulks at the thought of no diagonal attacking

I'd give Dungeons of Dredmor an 8/10, I've got a ton of fun out of it.

This is one of the first and best roguelikes I've ever played. I racked up hundreds of hours on my laptop when I first played it and I'm yet to come across a contender that even comes close.
There's a million different items, styles, skill trees, spells, scrolls, wands, and ways that you can play the game so it never gets stale.
It manages to pull all this off and still be simple!
It's majority point and click so no real need to remember awkward keybinds like a lot of roguelikes. It also has a subtle underlying comedy throughout the whole game without being in your face or cringy.
Every year or so I'll come back and have a new playthrough just because it crosses my mind. Dungeons of Dredmor is one of my favourite games and you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to give it a go if you're a fan of the genre.

10 years on, still one of the best roguelikes. It has charm, tactics and boots to the face.

Get the complete version, the DLCs add a lot and really flesh it out so that every game feels very different to the next. If you've never tried it and you like roguelikes it absolutely has a lot to offer.

A shame the developers no longer exist, but their single game legacy is a pretty envious one I'm sure many studios would die for.

I've had this game pretty much since it was released. I usually play until I get far as fuck and die. Then I drop it swearing it off for the rest of eternity. This is the only roguelike that's this punishing that manages to drag my ass back like a woman drags back her wandering lover. I hated it at first but it grew on me every game until I get dungeon starved and start comparing whatever I'm playing to it. It may be a few months or even years between delves, but I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it. It's one of those games that a long time after you play it you only remember the good times, and none of the traumatic wtfs.

An easy recommendation . A surprisingly deep rougelike that has a veneer of whimsy which takes some getting used to, but with the right sense of humor you will learn to embrace the silliness and fall in love with it. Certainly will be on my rotation of games I will keep playing for years to come.

A few minor things I would change about the game:
1) I wish in addition to the flavor text for all the items and monsters, that there was a more descriptive description of what the item/monster does. Instead of me guessing or going to an external wiki.
2) It would be much better if the items I wear actually appear on my character. It just all looks so samey after awhile with the look of your character. Even simplier graphical tiles of DCSS or CDDA have items show on your avatar. This can be jarring on a modern audience really.
3) I wished the UI scales better to large displays, I have an 3840x1600 monitor and the mini map and the character screen are still way too small.

My wife gifted me this because it was a game of her childhood. I thought i wouldn't like it as i pretty much never liked a single roguelike game in my life, i thought the genre was not for me.

But i gave it a go as in to please her and boy i was in for a blast. This thing screams old school. Kinda made me feel i was back in my old days of crusty-old rpg games.

What surprised me more is the ammount of skilltrees you can have, holy crap. I died 3 times already but still having fun with my Blacksmith Engineer Rogue

I was having an okay time until I got to the final boss and discovered that the character I'd lovingly taken all the way down the dungeon was specc'd wrong to beat him. I had build a vampiric character who was built on living on the edge and killing enemies to regain health. My advice? Don't play one. It's all fun and games until you realize you've wasted hours of your time trying a build that literally cannot get past the finish line.

A ridiculous rogue-like game in the earliest sense of the genre (really I could just repeat the word ridiculous 100 times and it still wouldn't be enough).

Recommended for anyone who likes turn-based games with a lot of DnD-like mechanics, very little explanations, crippling difficulty, brokenly ridiculous powers, and cheesy sound effects that will sit in the back of your memories for years to come.

This game is great, character skills are incredible. This is a roguelike that has effectively been dumbed down for people like me. There definitely still is complexity and the crafting, potion, tinkering, yada yada are all very complex and great if you dive into it. It's a 100% grind but if you have time and a microwave computer this is awesome.

Classic rogue-like game with more modern graphics. Prepare to die. A lot. Like, I died less playing Dark Souls for longer. Difference is, there are a wider variety of builds to try in this, and permadeath gives you an excuse to try more of them.

Best run so far was Crossbows, Tinkering, Dodge, Armor, Shields, Perception, and Burglary. I didn't die to anything other than Dreadmore's magic (and only because I forgot to swap my dual shields for Dark Mirror Shields).

An absolutely incredible traditional rogue-like game that many seem to have completely glanced over. If you're looking for an in-depth, highly customize-able and humorous experience, I highly recommend dusting this off of your backlog and giving it a try!

A wacky old school RPG who's charm still shines bright. With skill trees like: necro-economics, killer vegan, communist, and paranormal investigator among others, replayability is delightfully high. Fans of simple graphics and old school difficulty will definitely enjoy this hidden gem.

This roguelike (not roguelite) was probably the first that truly got me hooked into the genre. After years of not playing it I found myself missing it after playing others of the genre and felt that its pull warranted a review.

One of the most user friendly rougelikes I ever played, I really appreciate the pun based humor.

The interactions between skill trees and the crafting system takes a while to figure out and the final boss is really freaking tough, but other then that it's one of my favourite games.

Shame the company colapsed, I wish we could get a remake or a sequel.

I have played this game maybe four-five times more in offline mode than online so make of those numbers what you will.

A great rougelike with a ton of different skills and abilities that make every run unique and interesting. One run you might pick every crafting skill and simply brute-force your way through problems with your amazing equipment but lack of stats, inate combat capability or abilities. The next you pick shields, heavy armour and dual weilding, find two of the biggest shields you can and slowly waddle your way to victory in your equipment that more resembles a slightly portable bunker than actual armour. The third run you pick vampiracy, bloodmancy and viking wizardry and become the doom marine, ripping and tearing through everything.

That is another strong suite of this game, the comedic edge. While you have your bog standard skills like swords and axe that make you better with guess what? Swords and axes, you also have fun and weird choices like Communist that while not giving bonuses to not eating gives you cold resistance and buff-debuff abilities and passives themed around communism, like real-socialism that drains gold every turn. Some other interesting examples are: Emomancy where you deal but also become more vunerable to existential dammage. Archaeology that is more or less just an Indiana Jones refference with a bunch of skills to muck around with artifact items and Killer Vegan that has huge stat buffs but penalises attacking animals and eating meat. While it isn't the height of comedy, it isn't in your face all the time and there is a good game to fall back on when the skills lose their luster.

The modding community is quite good as well, I haven't taken part in it for several years now but when I left there was plenty of new stuff to mess around with so even if everything ended the day I stopped playing and modding you would have a pretty big backlog.

There are some problems with the game, some skills are definetly worse choices than others and due to the game being decently hard you will gravitate towards the better options and ignoring some of the dead-ends. The studio also is no more so if you have a technical problem don't expect it to be fixed... ever. But assuming that you don't have any problem of that nature the list of negatives becomes quite short.

This game is by-and-large really well balanced. There is enough complexity to make it fun and interesting, but not so much as to cause you to waste countless hours trying to learn the game mechanics. You will die. You cannot respawn. You create a new character and apply what you learned. It is from the perspective of the Major Naughty Haha (my eldest daughter's endearing term for a villain), so in a way you're the hero, but in that dungeon, you're a vandal and mass-murderer. Love it!!

I found in one play-through that the second level was hard so as to make it very challenging. In this one, it's going well, so far. Large pink blocks marked on your map help you remember where the merchants were. You can make the map slightly larger using the icon at the top right of the map. You will find many items during your foray into the depths. It can be hard to choose what to keep and what to get rid of.

Check everything, even the bookshelves. Do the side quests. They sound confusing and like nonsense, but they're real! The rewards are nice.

Run away to heal, if needs be. You will face decisions over and over again in this game. Choose wisely.

Pretty good roguelike. Easier than most, but I see that as a good thing.

At the start you get to choose 7 different skill paths (from 36 - 60, depending on dlcs), and this will constitute your character. This gives each playthrough some variety, since they really change how the game plays. However, the dungeons themselves, as well as the monsters, get old after a while.

The game does a good job of teaching how to play and presenting information, at least compared to most other roguelikes. There is no identify mechanic; the game outright tells you what each item does, for the most part (potions, mushrooms and skills have some effects only show up when you use them, but that is easily done). This makes it easier to pick up and play without having to do a ton of research.

The graphics are ok, and the music is good, but very repetitive.

Overall I'm glad that I bought and played this game, and can recommend it if you are looking for a roguelike that is easier to play but still has some depth.

This is just a quick review to add some thought to anyone contemplating buying this.

If you have played rogue or any of the thousand rogue-likes after it, this game is for you. It takes all the gameplay you are familiar with and makes it...silly. Yep, this game is rogue with laughs. Does it have some shortcomings? Sure, but what game doesn't. The sheer joy of opening a Monster Zoo outweighs the moment of realizing you have just accidentally attacked the store owner.

Play it. Have fun. Die well.

This is the kind of dungeon crawler where you can take your time, build something ridiculous, and die anyways because the boss is unkillable. Just kidding, learn what play-style suits you and hope you get that sweet loot. And don't forget to mod.

A great - if a tiny tad grindy - introduction to traditional roguelikes. Oh, it has its flaws, like:
  • Inventory management is a nightmare, especially if you try to play a crafter, because of how freaking many near-identical types of items there are. There are like 7 different types of cheese, 4 types of steak, 22 functionally-same types no-effect of alcohol, and about 34.35 bajillion types of crossbow bolts. Oh, and every single one of several disciplines of crafting requires at least a single inventory item to use. Oh, and you have a stash space, but there is no stash management, so have fun picking up 10+ items to get to the one at the bottom.
  • Permament corruption mechanic - where melee attacks of some monsters add random permament stat maluses to your magic items - makes playing pure melee characters impossible. Unless you are insane enough to craft every single item you own, or buy the DLC where one of the skill trees has the one and only method of removing corruption.
  • Summoning a single ally turns every single combat turn to a slog. Summoning several is even worse.
  • Abrupt music cuts when jumping back and forth between your stash space, dungeon, and shop, can really sour you on a catchy soundtrack. And the game practically drowns you on loot.

...but its good qualities are numerous, especially for new players.

Shame that the developers dissolved without a word of warning, shortly after publishing their promising second game, Clockwork Empires, in a definitely unfinished state. That means, if you'd grow to love the game, you'd be heartbroken to find out there will never be any compatiblity patches, any anniversary patches, any new DLC, any sequels, and that at least one achievement (that required you to meet the developers in person) is forever unclaimable.

This graphical roguelike is possibly the best way to experience many of the aspects the genre has to offer, but is flexible enough to accomodate more 'casual' players.

Roguelikes aren't for everyone, but this game truly is, with its colorful and funny graphics, the witty writing, the complex yet entertaining build system, the optional perma-death; this is the perfect way to experience the funny random nature so intrinsic to the genre with much less of the frustrations that are inherent to it.
The engine is a bit dated and janky, but the game is extensible and customizable which is a big plus in its favor, making an inherently replayable game even more replayable!

I bought this game on HumbleBundle so it was very cheap. On the whole, the game is very much a rogue-like game. The dungeons are randomized as are the encounters. The items can be tediously repetitious. Many of them are reskinned with a different color and the stats vary based on luck rolls. Still, in terms of replayability, the game is solid. You get to choose a set of any skills you wish from a pool and use them to run through dungeon levels. This means you can play over and over and have a different experience each time (while the skills don't combo, they will supplement each other better others). If you are looking for a challenge (I have yet to reach the end), this is definitely a great game to pick up. Perfect for a quick hop on and hop off game during your free time.
