This is excellent and original RTS. It is not micro-management hell like other frantic RTS games. Here you focus on slowly expanding your battle line, building forts in key locations and settling new towns. At the same time, you can still enjoy good and strategic battles. You command whole squads of units and the squads can be composed as you wish, swordsman in the first line, archer and a mage as a support and a hero or a captain. It has a bit of Warcraft, Heroes and Civilization all in very good and functional mixture.

You can use different terrain or formations to gain upper hand in the battle which is great. I really like the campaign, I frist played the Kohan: Ahriman's gift and I was surprised that this campaign is actually fun. Every map the task is a bit different and although there are not that many mechanics in the game I found it engaging and fun.

Some levels can be challenging but you can overcome them with the right combination of units or finding key locations to capture.

Offering an unique collection of strategy mechanics the Kohan formula is fascinating heirloom of RTS history. That age is also comes out in the lack of QoL of modern games and slow pacing.

This was my favorite game when i was younger, hands down. Coming back to it so much later, I find that it holds up in so many ways. Part of that is probably nostalgia, but in general, this is just an unbelievably strong title, full of depth, engagement, and creativity.

Without getting too into the details, here's what's great about this game - it's a unique take on real time strategy from the peak of the genre's success, and a lot of the ideas pioneered and explored here are just as fresh today as they were when the game first released. The way you build your cities, your economy, and your armies in this game reveals a whole different school of thought on RTS game design, and anyone the least bit interested in the genre, or even just in clever design choices in game history, would benefit from seeing how this game operates. Similarly, the mechanics for combat were revolutionary for the time, and remain unparalleled even now.

When Kohan first came out, it was met with critical and commercial success, and if the RTS genre had continued, I think we would have seen a lot of its ideas in other games. However, due to bad timing and technological advances, big developers stopped making RTS games right around the same time that Kohn was revolutionizing them, and so when, years later, strategy started to make a comeback, Kohan's new ideas were more or less forgotten.

The game isn't perfect. Because of how old it is, there are adaptation issues, but a thread in the community hub contains some easy downloads that should fix the problem. There are other issues to do with age; the AIs, while advanced for their time, do leave a lot to be desired to a modern player. The graphics, to me at least, are charming the way they are, but certainly aren't impressive, and the voice acting annoyed me even when I was younger. Also, because it was the style of games back then, it can be a bit slow paced, both in terms of an individual game, some of which take hours, or in terms of the campaign, which takes a while to really get started.

But perfect or not, old or not, this game is GOOD. SO VERY GOOD. It's fun to play, engaging to think about, and offers a lot of depth in terms of strategy, tactics, micromanagement, troop synergy and improvisation. You should try it, just to see what it looks like. Video game history like this should not be forgotten. There is so much to learn from forgotten gems like Kohan.

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is the first game

The gameplay is unique even for how dated the title is. Instead of massing units and micromanaging them with high APM (Actions Per Minute), you can easily move, watch your units fight, and drink a cup of coffee without worrying about getting arthritis. Instead of making the same units till you hit cap, you get to make a company of units. There will be a certain requirements to make units. This could be making a barracks and a temple to make a Paladin or for Elite Guards it would be Barracks, Blacksmith, Temple, and a Library. This works in similar fashion with archers, magic users, and anything else. Instead of unit caps you’ll hit a company cap. So at the start of the game you’ll be at 1 company until you upgrade your city. You can Name your company personally or allow the game to do so for you. You can mix and match your company. For example, you could have Front Line with Footmen with two supports of a Paladin, or Ranger, or Cleric. You can have an entire company of all Footmen. The support classes will need to be accompanied by a Front line unit, but Front line units can play both roles. They can be accompanied by a captain or a hero that you’ll have during campaign or skirmish.

You’ll have formations that can make a company of troop move faster but is less effective during combat or shines during combat, but is moves at a slower pace. You have to remind yourself to change this back prior of combat because if you’re in the march formation you might find yourself in trouble. Also, you’ll have waypoints so the company can move about the map without you always clicking all over the place.

The economy works in an interesting aspect as well. Instead of mining, chopping wood, or gathering resources in general, it’s produced via your city. Each resource also has an option where you can get more resources, an added effect for your units or civilization in general, or take away some of those resources to convert into gold. You can upgrade your cities after your city as hit the maximum slot – also depends on the faction you play too. For example if you build a lumberyard and a blacksmith, you then can upgrade your city into the next tier. This also increases your Company population by one as well. The more cities you have the higher your company population and the more resources you get. The units will also deplete your resources. If you start to go negative with iron or lumber it will start dipping into your gold as a way of upkeep. You need gold to make companies so keep that mind as well.

On the map you’ll see nodes of Iron, gold, crystals and other variations. This will help increase your gold output, lumber, etc. You’ll also see Independent factions or creatures throughout the map too. You can attack and kill their villages and ruins to obtain gold too. This makes exploring fun and rewarding, especially if you’re low on funds.

The UI is clunky and dated at times but a lot of it is good even for how old it is. For example, you can click the heroes tab and attached or detach from a company without even clicking on the company and/or hero itself. You also have a diplomacy tab to wage war, make peace or make alliances. You have a company tab to help you find all your companies on the map. You have a message log tab to see who died, what was built, who attacked who, etc. You also have a tab for all your forts and cities and you can filter between them too. You have a Quest and Technology tabs. These tell you about what you discovered while playing along and during the campaign the Quest tab is your objectives.

You have zones which help you repopulate your companies if they get hurt, the supplies zones help you when you build a structure on a resource node so you can obtain the extra resources. You’ll also see control zones which allow building from maximum distance from your other villages. You cannot have multiple cities within the same zones. You can build forts wherever you feel like which is also upgradable.

You get four factions all with their own style, heroes, units, buildings, and upgrades. They all have their pros and cons against other factions and you’ll learn this throughout playing the game. The other neat feature is when you defeat a city that belongs to another faction; you get to make companies out of their own units against them and/or other opponents. The campaign is voiced and talks about the lore of Kohan with the heroes you interact with, the world you explore, and the villains you get to kill. The campaign was enjoyable and you had a sense of progression throughout the missions and quests.

I recommend the game if you’re into older RTS titles without the APM atmosphere.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#433 out of 576)... it's time for Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns.

...Yet one more older game that simply does not work on modern hardware, regardless of compatibility settings. Steam really ought to refrain from selling such broken games, or at least to something to incentivize publishers to keep their catalogs compatible.

My childhood <3

Yes the graphics are a bit, dated, however the core gameplay is still great and this is surprisingly one of the best RTS games I've played. This gem of a game is still one of my favorites and it is worth the money to buy if you love a good and at times difficult RTS.

I played this around 2002, and was immediately hooked, and was delighted to find it.. This is perhaps the best RTS game, ever. Its use of zones of control alone make it unique, the progression is interesting, enhancements to a city (blacksmith, sawmill, etc.) are simply clicked to build instead of making sure you have enough workers. Resupplying depleted armies is accomplished by moving the army within the supply zone. The game is challenging enough in Easy mode, so masochists will immediately be just as entranced.

It plays beautifully with Steam Play for Linux, also.

VERY highly recommended.

A patch is desperately needed to play this game. It is so choppy that it is unplayable on current OS. I loved this game and want to play it badly but can't until it is fixed.

TLDR; This game is a hidden classic.

As my first RTS game, it helped ease me into the RTS genre. It's easy to pick up and fun and challenging once you get further into it. While im 95% sure that the online portion of this game is dead, you can still make your own maps and scenarios. The story is great and immersive as well. Just give it a shot if you are an RTS fan, and if you are not one this might make you one.

EDIT:
Almost all of the negative reviews are about poor performance or freezes, assuming these people were all on Windows 8 or 10, there IS A PATCH FOR THIS. You need this patch to properly run the game or else your performance will suffer! As of this updated review (4/20/19) there is only one guide for this game and it has a link to the patch you need. Download it and use it to be able to fully enjoy the game! There is also another program you can use to make the game windowed, but you are limited on the resolutions you are able to use. Don't let the fact that it is an older game set you off! With minimal effort you can get it working and experience this hidden gem.

From my youth playing RTS games, Kohan always stood out as being one of the more unique and awesome RTS games. The mechanics are very solid and are worth anyones time if they have a love for RTS games and have not tried it before. I love the economic system, I love the fighting mechanics, I love the army building mechanics, I love the terriroty expansion mechanics, I love the campaign and the presistant progression mechanics. I love the incentive to explore the whole map and find all the treasure since it goes with you to the next map mechanic. Truly a great RTS.

This game is worth giving a try.

Kohan games have existed for some time now and are each of them one of those 'golden oldies hidden gems', imo.
I wouldn't even go so far as to name a particular one that is nicer than another, although graphic-wise I'd recommend to try Kohan 2 if interested anyway.

This game is an RTS, with simple base/building management, aimed at larger groups of units clashing with nice graphics involving the 'magic' used by the units.
Micromanagement is very much canceled out, as to be able to keep focus on the units that walk around the map.
The gameplay is simple and has a very natural learning curve. Compared to just starting the game, the tutorial is rather storybuilding, useful at best.

Unit management is easy and clumsy at the same time. Little, though effective options for movement, sight range, attack, defend and retreat are amongst the choices. As soon as units are engaged in combat, only an option to flee or to rout the unit will cause them to break the fight. This can be annoying, but when you get around a bit with the game, is no issue at all and 'flee' can be used for ease of deploying troups somewhere else. Groups upto 6 units can be selected at once, and you can asign group settings as for movement. It doesn't work perfect at times, for some formations end up in a long line instead of a focused stance, but with a little moving them manually, it'll do.

The game itself has quite some missions. Enough to be rewarding. The storyline is nice, if you feel for such thing, though the narrative can be quite boring to 'have to' listen to. I liked it.
You in general start with a town, in which you can build a maximum of 4-7 components. The components are chosen out of 8, each having a choice of 2-3 upgrades afterwards with a variety of effects, so a very simple variety per town and it's abilities/purpose exists.
In the end the thing is: make enough money and get enough resources to build and support the units, upgrade the town, upgrade the components, do battle.

The units, of 5-7 members, are created from options that are reliant on the buildings in the settlement, You pick a frontline unit (4), support units (2) and a captain. By picking from various options of available units, you can slightly manage how you want to play your battles.
Instead of the Captain, you can also pick from the Kohan available to you, which is a stronger (storyline) character, that becomes stronger by staying alive and defeating opponents.

Hidden in the large maps, are items, more Kohan charaters and some treasure. There are most of the time enough critters, independents and enemies to keep you busy while expanding, exploring and conquering with your units.
The maps graphically could've been better, though back in the days was fair. The game to me is more about the battle graphics and large scale unit clashes.

Don't expect an RTS, like the traditional RTS games given birth by westwood studio's. This is just a different style, laying the focus a bit more on fighting, expanding, planning and moving than actual basebuilding and resource gathering. Micromanagement is as said possible, but simplified. The AI could've been better, but what to expect from an oldie like this. It still manages to give you quite a busy time when playing hard mode.

Want to try something different?
Kohan is worth it, in my opinion. Buy it in a sale if you don't want to spend on sight, either you like it, or you dislike it I guess, nothing much in between.

I used to play this game relentlessly in the early-mid 2000s. I had this game installed on my machine when it came out on steam and I picked it up and logged a few hours in (I had recently played probably around 50 hours or so not on steam).

Pros in General: Great graphics for the time (the magic effects are particularly satisfying). Fantastic gameplay. Hillarious voice acting.

Pros for Oldies: If you remember this game, get it. It's just as good as you remember it honestly. The gameplay is fantastically deep and rewarding still. The ability to mix and match front line units with support units remains as engaging as ever. You will be barrelled over laughing at the quality of the voice acting. It's so horrible that I can't consider a Con, it's just SO bad it's good! Seriously you'll love it. If you remember this game get it. And if you like games from this time period for their difficulty but sense of reward, get it.

Pros for Newbies: If you're a fan of strategy games and you're looking for something TOTALLY different to what you've played before then get this. It's very difficult to truly describe the game but here's a shot. You have the ability to form a line of main troops (spearmen, archers, swordsmen, etc) and then give them a captain and two support units (cleric, mage, sorccerer, more spearmen, etc) and it's this combination that makes this game interesting. Finding the right faction and combination of units for you is a real treat as you will find new and exciting combinations and playstyles constantly for different situations. Each of the different factions plays very differently even though some seem to differ superficially with some skin changes and a few number differences with a unit change or two they are actually significant. If you're unfamiliar with games from this time period they're a lot more unforgiving than they are nowadays but not in a cruel way. More in a way that makes you realise you made a tactical error and the enemy beat you fair and square.

Cons in General: It's a difficult game at first. Since some of the factions are essentially reskins with a few stat and unit changes, the battles can look pretty boring at times.

tl;dr: Get it if you remember it or not. Great graphics, fun voice acting, a bit difficult, but will have you feeling rewarded and like a hero of the land in no time.

Kohan is a unique strategy game which blends the rts and turn based strategy genre together. It borrows many concepts from other games and add some features of its own which creates a very enjoyable experience. All things considered, Kohan is a hidden gem that has long been forgotten but has aged quite well. It has lenghty campaigns, great multiplayer and offers quite a challenge.

The game plays like a realtime Heroes of Might and Magic combined with rts combat that requires more strategy and planning instead of fast reaction like most rts games do. It's all about training well balanced companies that can overcome the enemy and taking the terrain to your advantage. You need to conquer cities, outposts and ressources in order defeat your opponents.

The ressource system is also fairly unique and allows for some strategizing, instead of gathering ressources you can erect different buildings which give you ressources which are used by other buildings or units. If you lack any ressources, this will be compensated by a heavy gold cost. This allows for some variation and is pretty flexible.

Overall it's highly recommended for players who are longing for an unique and great rts.

The only downside that I can think of is that the graphics are dated and that you can't change the resolution. Nevertheless the sprites and animations are really good for such an old game.

This is an early RTS that got a lot of things right, well before other games in the genre. In particular, the way troops are organized into squads that gradually replenish themselves while in home territory really takes a lot of clicking out of the equation. The clickfest thing has always pushed me away from RTSes, so it's no wonder I found this appealing.

I owned a retail copy of this game more than 10 years ago, and when I found it on Steam I wound up getting it so I could finally finish playing through the campaign. I tend to hop from game to game a lot and not finish things, but this was one I wanted to play to the end. I finally beat it (it's not particularly difficult on Normal, except for the last level; I haven't tried Hard yet), and am looking forward to trying the other two Kohan titles that exist.

From a modern eye, there are one or two things to put up with when playing this dated title. The low resolution is a given, as is the resulting small viewable area. When you order your troops around, or even click to select them, their vocal acknowledgements are annoying and repetitive. Various other small bits of interface clunkiness, but overall I think you'll be surprised how many things they did get right.

The Kohan series never made it big, and it's certainly not a well-known IP. Kind of a shame; perhaps someday someone will acquire the rights and take another stab at it. Then again, the story is not really the selling point for me.

It's a good game, no doubts there. It must have been awesome when it came out though. It's a fun mix of RPG and strategy, you get lots of heroes to level and cities to build and expand.
The problem is that there are so many other games to play that are newer and better (no i'm not talking just about the graphics) then this one. I would really like to see it being done nowadays, with much more in-depth citybuilding and troopchoices and troop-xp and generally a better UI.
If you're looking for an old retro game that has a huge world to explore through several heroes and lore there's no doubt this ones for you.
It allso has several expansion packs available so it's also a huge game overall.
