With Fire & Sword is effectively a module for Mount & Blade. The core gameplay remains largely the same, in all its janky and yet still somehow addictive glory, but it comes with a few important twists.

Calradia and the fantasy setting are out. Mid-17th century eastern Europe is in. The game takes place during the Deluge, the event that ended the Polish golden age and set the foundations for what would become the Russian empire. The player is yet again an adventurer who finds themselves at this corner of the world during turbulent times, raises a host of soldiers and becomes an active participant. This is a rarely examined but pivotal event in world history, so I found it very compelling to explore. Arguably moreso than the previously featured fantasy setting.

The tradeoff is that this game is less of an open-ended sandbox than previous games in the series. In fact it even has a few main quests that can be completed. This is a rather surprising change, considering Mount & Blade is famed for its openness. I would consider it to be a significant drawback, but there is a mitigating factor. The available quests are loosely based on real events and as such quite interesting. The Cossack Hetmanate revolt, a rather anachronistic false Dmitry rebellion and of course the aforementioned Deluge. Great incentives to learn some history too.

Another important difference, this time clearly positive, is gunpowder. The inclusion of guns changes combat and tactics considerably. In Warband, I would just get myself a nice axe and go around chopping heads, but in Fire & Sword I enjoyed using those early guns in a fight quite some. Mobility becomes even more important and I found myself using horses more. I got a new appreciation why guns came to dominate the battlefield even from this early on.

All in all, I recommend this game to all Mount & Blade fans, as well as fans of history and eastern Europe. It is a worthwhile experience, despite diluting somewhat the formula that made Mount & Blade great. Unlike previous entries, this one even has some polish. Granted it's the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but hey, Polish is polish. Right?

Fire and Sword is great and a heck of an addictive game, although it is little similar to older mount and blades but i am still enjoying it. Bring of firearms in action has increased a lot of gameplay, Rifles and muskets really makes the scenario more challenging, just one shot and you are dead. the Grenades are probably the most fun part of the game, Although i would appreciate if we could hold more than 12 of them. The storyline is neither great nor bad. Although the reason i am giving this game a 10 is because of the multiplayer. which is extremely fun to play....Its just awsome, and because of the new items in the game, the multiplayer just gets better and better

Recommend only if you'll looking for something different in Mount n Blade. If your new, stick to Warband (Or Bannerlord.) Its a much better introduction to the series. This addition is a bit hit or miss. Gameplay feels like you jumped into your history book.
------------------------
The Good
------------------------
Adds guns. Thats the main reason really to try this. It basically operates like the crossbow except you can move while reloading, and not as accurate. There are also new features, such as different ways to siege castles. Ie: you can build a ladder, try to break into the city, poison water supply, or blow up the wall. Mercenaries are kind of cool; you don't recruit in towns really. You hire mercs and get to choose which type of soldiers. You can even buy them new equipment, but I haven't felt the need to. Towns have a few new features. Like ordering weapons or investing for a 14% monthly return (I wish investing was that easy in real life.) The Cossack theme is very unique.
The custom battles are more fun in this than warband. Something about going around with a gun in a massive army.
------------------------
The Bad
------------------------
They added a 'story' but its not that great. The missions so far are, keep asking random Lords until you find out where to go. Joining a faction is weirdly glitchy. In warband, its easy to join, but in this, I still haven't been given the choice after 100 renown.
The guns are fun, but its obviously coded off of the crossbow. Its weird that you still cant shoot on your left (like how you couldn't with a bow.)
The grenades suck. You would think an explosion would kill a lot of people, but they are hard to use and not even that powerful. Also they are consumed after each time you use it, rather than replenishing after a fight.
You cant really make an OP character like warband. The guns are a bit of an equalizer. Get shot a few times and your out. Luckily I havent died all that much, because as long as you keep moving, you probably wont get shot.
The game is a bit rougher for new characters as well because of the guns.

An amazing game set in a time period both dear to me and very underrepresented in the category of historic games. The setting taking place in the Pike and Shot Era is a pleasant departure from the oversaturation of medieval and modern shooter games as this is the transition period between those two times. While a guns do pose a danger to you as one lucky shot from a marksman can snipe you off the back of your horse, proper tactics and troop placement can save you from that headache. This game is well worth the price and with give you many hours of joy as it has brought me.

More like a sidestep, an expansion of the original Mount & Blade: Warband. Lot's of nice features found in Warband are absent in With Fire & Sword, of the two, Warband is the better game.

But this one has firearms, a 17th century east europe setting. Bows and sabres against muskets and pikes. Swordsmen in heavy armor and two handed claymores, light infantry with cloth uniform, fencing swords and pistols.

5/5. To tell the truth, the game doesn't really deserve 5 stars, but after spending few hours playing it, I can't force myself give any less.

Fire & Sword shares many similar mechanics with Warband and is set in northeastern Europe. The big difference is that Fire & Sword features guns while Warband doesn't. I'd only recommend Fire & Sword if you are interested in this setting or guns since Warband feels slightly more polished and comes with workshop mods. For all the others, Warband is probably the better option.

This game is not for everyone. With that being said, it's best to keep in mind that it fills a very particular niche which is barely explored by video games (the only other I can think of right now is Cossacks 3). The 17th Century, Eastern European world depicted in Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword is incredibly detailed. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth rules most of the central map while the Cossack Hetmanate rebels in the southeast, aided by the Muscovite Tsardom. For what the game lacks in polish, graphics and gameplay it makes up for in story and atmosphere. Those who have read Henryk Sienkiewicz's trilogy (With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Fire in the Steppe) will feel right at home. In fact, some characters in the game are ripped straight from the books.

I'm sure that those interested in this time period, like myself, will delve into and explore an open world, learning more about the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the creation of an independent Cossack state, while the Polish Commonwealth is harassed by the Swedes from the north. The game truly does not focus on exciting and thrilling gameplay, but the role-playing and the story is excellent. To add to that, the outfits are great and fit the time period, complemented by an excellent soundtrack that will transport anyone to 17th Century Eastern Europe.

If you like mount and blade, get this game. It's probably not worth the money if you've never played mount and blade, but if you're a seasoned player that wants something different it'll give you something to do for a few hours. You're telling me I can dress like a knight and charge into battle on my steed, guns akimbo??? Sold!

Before you buy:
TaleWorlds has captured the absolute crap shoot that was firearms in the gunpowder age. It's great fun if you have enjoyed Warband and Bannerlords but need more mods or whatever. The biggest issue with the guns is thier inaccurate aiming and the lethality of hits. Think arrows but even less accurate and more deadly. Want to ride your horse and pew pew the enemy? Better hope a stray bullet doesn't catch your face while you somehow miss everything.

Still worth a shot, just be prepared for the reality.

I loved Warband but this expansion is absolute crap... without even letting you know its crap until later. Ill start with the small problems. Minor graphical errors at times if you push escape to often in battle to pause it, once these happen you have to exit game and restart or there will be weird lines everywhere. The AI for the campaign leaders is quite retarded... the marshall of a nation will just run around in circles never accomplishing anything other than maybe taking a fort that is way too deep in enemy land to hold for long. Anyways i just pushed through the shitty AI thinking how it will all be good once i get more powerful and can take out forts and towns on my own but that isnt true. I finally was able to siege a decent fort all by myself... the Tzar said i had to many lands and gave it to someone else (all i had was a village at the time). Soooo anyways i rebelled and then took one of their towns nearby to keep them from owning anything too close to me....
THIS HERE IS WHAT KILLED IT FOR ME!!!
-Unlike the previous version where you could start your own nation... you are just considered a rebel and you cannot recruit lords to your cause or accomplish anything after rebelling. This game just wants you to be a mindless follower to a really stupid AI, which makes it so there really isnt any point in playing this for long since there is no end game (just keep following some pointless marshall around forever until you build up enough reknown to be marshall. If you have ever played strategy games but thought to yourself how fun it would be to take out the strategy part and instead be a simple pawn unit then this is the game for you!)

WAY TO RUIN WHAT WOULD BE A GREAT GAME

Oh and why would you take off the ability to wield any two hand weapons while on horseback?

While this expansion pales in comparison with mods and even it's other expansion Napoleonic total war this one still offers historical accuracy and even designed it's game world after eastern Europe. This game also introduced firearms so let's all be glad for that. I still prefer warband and mods though but I still respect this expansion for innovating the gameplay.

Not the overall highest rated TALEWORLDS game but for my money the best.
I like the other games but this versions use of a real world setting, politics and maps made it just a bit better for me.

Like all M+B games you build character, recruit a few soldiers and venture out into the world.
You can shape your leader any which you wish old-school-RPG style putting point by point your advancements into personal characteristics, skills and weapon styles.
You can also develop your main companions in the same manner to craft them into anything your team may need and cover skills you don't posses.

The quests let you advance without too much risk, that is until you have gained a larger company and a large amount of favour with a particular nation - where the game suddenly becomes a bit tougher and way more interesting. As a potential Warlord you will be invited to assist a nation in their matters, your skill and manpower can be the key in saving a nations fate or tipping the balance in a war and sending another nation to irrelevance. Once your nation of choice has won a war against another nation you will gain popularity within that nation (and lose it in others), and importantly be offered a fife of your to rule.
Another source of income and a place to spend income as your town/castle will have many places for your to develop.
The end game; can you not only advance a nation to winning it's wars with all it's neighbours, but also increase your power becoming the warlord of that nation? Your rivals will be both internal and external you will need to practice both war and diplomacy. But how much, when, with who? That is all up to you.

A bit buggy, but still a very well made modification to the original mount and blade. The Eastern European/Polish setting is a great change from the western middle ages of the original game.

gotta love beating armies 2x your size, then in 1 battle losing because you ate an enemy lance in the opening seconds of the battle, get everything stolen so you walk butt naked to the nearest friendly town after escaping your captors just to get jumped by thugs with only your fists to defend yourself with

10/10 would torture myself again

While definetly a fun game it feels like a buggier reskin of Warbound in every way possible. The only way you would differentiate it from warbound was by the outfits, gear and wepons who are mostly reskins (guns and bombs were added though). As i mentioned previously its buggy as all hell where offten id see half of my screen spazz out during a dialouge or while in map mode, once i even got a vertical line where all of the textures were missing within the wide zig zag vertical line. A cool thing i noticed is that atleast estheticly the citys in the game make it feel more alive and well city like although this is one of the few good things i can say about the game. Some quests are also needlesy complicated while others flat out dont work. Overall if you are a die hard fan of the franchise or the historical period in wich the game takes place in id say you considor buying it on sale otherwise the same results can be emulated and to a much higher degree of success in warbound via a mod.

I give it 3/10

Its Mount and blade Warband with winged Hussars and Guns who would not love such a mixture of awesome However I would appreciate that this game had conventional troop trees like M&B Warband but none the less its a good game. I recommend anyone who has played the original to play this one as well. As a side note regardless of how crappy your operating system is the requirements to run and play this winged Hussar simulator at max settings is border lining on being a potato.

Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword Review

Release date: 3 May 2011

Pros:
Most fail to see the good side of Mount and Blade With Fire and Sword. No doubt it is an excellent game story wise. It makes you feel immersed in the Time of Troubles at the same time progressing in the storyline which is vital to this game. Without it, it might feel lackluster. For each major final mission, all are unique to their own tastes with the Tsardom, the Commonwealth, the Kingdom, the Hetmanate, the Khanate. You can possibly play this game 5 times completing each of these missions and not feel bored. Of course, all its engines are based off Warband since it was released a year after the previous installments but in it, many things have improved. The starting game doesn't feel as repetitive anymore. You don't have to spend hours on end chasing bandits and things like that. Just simply join a battle with the nation you'd like to join and earn renown over time; improve relations etc. and within say 4 hours, you can get started with the main missions.

Cons:
That being said, Mount and Blade With Fire and Sword at some times feels unpolished. To a point where parts of the map are unfinished, empty and just scattered overall. One of the main problems with going solo in the start is - Where are all the bandits?! It would take many in-game days just to find a party of 4 who'd just run away and even then, their loot aren't that great when it comes to using it against increasingly overpowered patrols of say 3 men who could decimate your trash party of 15. Yes, that with muskets and lances which tend to work well against cavalry in real life situations.

Verdict:
Regarding the over enjoyment of the game, I'd say it's definitely less enjoyable when it comes to riding around seeking nothing and harder than Warband battle-wise. But on the whole, the experience has really grown on me and possibly many others as I believe it's been overshadowed by Warband's release a year prior. And for that, I would award it:

7/10

with fire and sword.

Mount and Blade made a pretty bad first impression on me when I first played it. My friend was obsessed with it so while I was there, I played it for a bit. It just seemed janky, ugly, and overall just seemed like it didn’t have any of the precision of control on the brawling mechanics that I was used to with Japanese games (Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry). I didn’t even get on a mount lol. A couple of years later, Warband came out, and a bit after that, Fire and Sword. And with a much better PC (in that it actually had a graphics card lol) I was ready to try it again. And what an experience that was.

Firstly, the game was and still is buggy. One of my adventures immediately started with me bugging out and leaving me with no weapons and a couple of bread. I took this as a challenge, so I tried playing a bit. Well a lot. The way this start played out, it was pretty much a dice roll on you getting to the nearest village and then to the nearest city without the steppe raiders hunting you down. I conceptualized my strategy: go to the nearest village and sell all my bread and clothes except for one to not starve and get gold. Immediately hire as many recruits as they have available with that gold. Now get to the town, if you can make it, or see if you can fight some looters, or go to the next village if your way was blocked. The town was very important so you could fight in tournaments, and the tournaments are how you get money after all. But if you could manage to get an advantageous fight here or there with looters, you have to capitalize on it to make enough gold as you are so far behind the curve. And you are VERY far behind the curve without horses.

Well, I managed to get to the nearest village and to the next one, so I had about 7 dudes at my disposal at this point and I was feeling pretty good. But as I was trying to get to the town, a group of steppe raider immediately noticed our little group and started hunting me. The steppe raiders were MUCH faster than my militia infantry, so I had absolutely no chance of outrunning them. Left with no choice, we had to fight as they charged us down.

But all was not lost. I noticed that in front of us was a little river. I decided to command my little group to stand on the edge of the river so that the horseman couldn’t charge at full speed to them. The three riders galloped through the map, but slowed to a trot at the river. I immediately told my militia to charge, I went in with my bare fists. A long melee broke out and we managed to down 2 of the riders, but the last one broke through. I had lost my entire militia and I couldn’t contain him so he charged me over and over again until he finally broke me.

I was taken prisoner and dragged throughout the map. Eventually, I broke out and escaped my fate, landing in a town where I could start brawling some local drunks to make some money and eventually fight in some actual tournaments. I finally got enough money from these things to have some armor, a mediocre horse, and a respectable if not fantastic little squad. I was able to use this group to help out a lord and eventually got into his clan. Not bad for a dude that was stuck only bread and some peasant clothes some time ago.

And that was the thing about the game, there were so many layers to unpack. The combat on the ground felt like it could be done better, but this was a MELEE with a lot of fighters and that added a whole another depth. Then you had the capability to shoot arrows, ride horses, swing swords, use lances, and in the later game, shoot guns. Momentum mattered, so you had a strong reason to be riding at full speed which made for epic horse combat that was as fast paced as any action game. I still remember when I was playing MP in Fire and Sword and a lancer was coming at me at full speed and all I had was my little musket to keep him off. I had to wait until he was 5 feet from me before I could fire my shot (guns in this era are very inaccurate). And the sight of him crashing off of his horse and tumbling inches away from me is burned into my brain. And the battles. They were the biggest you could get at the time, especially at this perspective, and the mods just allowed them to be bigger and bigger. I mean, the game wasn’t really built with this in mind, it comes with a restriction of 150 v 150, but at least at the level of skirmishing... it was pretty good. There were no other game that even came close to it. Hell, even now, 10 years later, most of these battles aren’t that big (PUBG = 100, but that’s also with guns… so you don’t SEE 100 players on one screen).

And there was a lot to the game when you eventually got tired of the combat (which actually had a lot of intricacies as you explored it). Firstly, your character had his skills/attribute that you focused on, allowing him to be good at a couple of things at the expense of others. There was a lot to it, from trade, to tactics, to fighting. And you had the whole lord based diplomacy that was centered around the feudal aristocracy, and an ok trade system to exploit the economy. So overall, there was quite a lot of time you could sink into it. And the open world design with no game focused objective allowed the player a lot of freedom.

So overall, this was one of the best games to come out in the last decade and it’s fairly obvious why it had such a large following. There just weren’t any games doing what this did. Eventually Chivalry would be created in 2012 with a MP focus, and then War of the Roses, Life is Feudal, then For Honor, Kingdom Come, and later still Mordhau. Chivalry did away with the mouse movement and allowed them to be button based. War of the Roses… was crap. For Honor managed to add grappling and a deeper 1v1 system and a much more beautiful map and a much higher art budget. Kingdom Come decided to make a more personal story with a single player storyline and had more set pieces. Life is Feudal basically tried to marry this game with Dwarf Fortress and made it a MMO, which I know the M&B fanbase was clamoring for. But for some reason, no game has gone after the throne of this epic medieval battle… that is until Bannerlord.

Can it be better? Absolutely. There are thousands of things we could talk about, from the graphics, to the implementation of group combat, the 1v1 combat, to the tactics menu, to the size of battles, to all the other details of the game. The potential in this concept is incredibly high! And that's absolutely fine, because that means we have clear and obvious things to go after for it's sequels. But this STILL doesn’t change the fact that this was a game you just had to play back in the day. And, that’s what mattered.

great game so many thing to do an TAKE over become a warlord fight as solider for a king

defend villages, fight sieges,defend sieges,take castle,mange buildings,elect people

gun give it a new twist of mount an blade but still makes the game more challenging an fun all round great game defend a castle with ya rifle an sword has never felt so cool an you can pick a elite team of bad asses to protect you an the walls but it more than defending castle you got to build yourself up from nothing to a something depending on your play style an what you want the game is changeable to your needs it has hours of game play well worth a play

8/10 great game must play

Essentially a paid mod of Warband. You could even call it sub-par by today's standards, not so sure about 2011. Questionable design choices like the troop trees, and lack of modern features, but more polished and balanced than most total conversions. Buy if you are Polish or like the setting a lot.

Way too buggy to be enjoyable. It's seems to be abandoned and missing some fixes for the main quests. Can't recommend it as there are many mods for M&B which are more polished and fun... and free. It's a pity as the game setting/history period and location is rather unique. :(

It's broken and abandoned.

Some achievements don't work, and entire questlines are bugged so bad you can't complete them.
Game crashes to desktop quite often, no way to predict or stop it.

Gameplay wise, obviously it's good, because it's Mount & Blade, which is amazing. This feels like a cheap mod creation, which should be free. There are actually even better mods for Warband that outshine this. Paying for an additional game, which is essentially the old M&B but modded, and then having it be incomplete, buggy, and abandoned by the devs? That's crazy.
