I am loving it. Can confirm HP Reverb (WMR) works great thanks to community controller bindings. Just wonderful to be able to revisit this in VR after all these years. Fortunately, I forgot all the solutions. So I am more struggling than rushing. Thanks Cyan!

“...perhaps, the ending has not yet been written.”
~Atrus

It was Fall of 1993 when my life changed once and for all. It was then when Miller brothers and their Cyan Worlds released MYST. The game, which up to this day, I consider as the very best game ever made. You may say that I'm overreacting and it was all because of how groundbreaking CD-ROM technology felt back in the days and sure, there'll be some truth in that. For modern kids it'll be a bit hard to understand, but back in the days, when games were distributed on physical media, that exact media meant a lot of limitations for developers. At the beginning of 90s, games already started to take ridiculous amount of floppy disks and even that was not enough. Which led to some crazy results. Take Star Trek: Judgment Rites for example. The main game took 11 (!) floppies, and yet, they ended up releasing cutscenes and voice overs as stand-alone expansion. Which took another 5 floppies. Crazy stuff. Now, here comes CD-ROM and... it changed everything.

Trilobyte, for example, were already working on their 7th Guest. A game that combined pre-rendered 3D graphics, FMV elements and high quality music / SFX. An absolutely groundbreaking and mind-blowing stuff. Now, here come Robyn and Rand K. Miller and... You know, the most interesting thing about MYST is that it was a pure art. While Trilobyte knew exactly what they were doing, Miller brothers weren't even gamers. They started their VG career by making games for kids, which were born from the idea of making an interactive children's book. But after experimenting with CD-ROM format in their Cosmic Osmo (according to brothers, in the remake of their very first game, Manhole, CD was just a fancy way to store a lot of floppies), the guys decided that they can do more. A daring project for adults. They tried to approach Activision, but those weren't interested in a game for adults. Sunsoft was, but ironically, Sunsoft wasn't interested in PC gaming.

Surprisingly, it was the need to think about console limitations that led to the concept of Ages. The self-sufficient worlds, which we can visit through so-called linking books. The ones that quickly became MYST's signature feature. And that was the story of MYST developing. There was no proper concept. It was one creative idea leading to another. The brothers were meeting new people, learning new things (for example, the game was originally planned to be hand-drawn, until the guys discovered StrataVision 3D), exploring their creativity and so on. Like I said, Millers weren't gamers. Heck, they didn't even know who their game was supposed to aim for. They just had blank canvas and tried to fill it with something beautiful. That was the biggest difference between MYST and The 7th Guest, the game Sunsoft specifically wanted to compete. The 7th Guest was a game. A game, in which player was supposed to solve the series of puzzles. While MYST? MYST was more like an experience.

More than anything, Millers wanted to destroy “the video game” feeling. They didn't want any UI to stand between you and their world. And they didn't want puzzles to feel like... you know, a game. They wanted you to dive into their world. To explore it. And they wanted things to feel as natural as possible. That's exactly why it was more than just CD-ROM magic. Sure, Sunsoft's console demands ended up being forgotten and Cyan created a state of the art product with the astonishing visuals, FMV elements and unforgettable music / SFX, but MYST was more than that. Much more. Playing MYST felt like diving into somebody else's mind. Exploring the unique worlds full of strange objects and machinery, trying to figure out how things work there... It felt magical. That's exactly why I love MYST so much. It's an incredibly creative game with the incredibly creative puzzles. The main island that serves as a hub? Perfect design is perfect. And of course, the way Cyan made us feel like we're playing not as just some fictional character, but as ourselves? It only made things better. More personal, if you know what I mean.

Naturally, the game became a huge hit. And like any huge hit, it got quite a lot of re-releases. It got updated version with better visuals, it got fully 3D remake and it got tons of ports. Interesting ones, like the one for Nintendo DS, included. But today? Today we're talking about the VR version. Which, I must say, is very special to me. Like I said, Miller brothers' biggest dream was to erase the border between player and video game. And back in the days? They totally did that. But nowadays? Nowadays it was possible to do more. To let us actually visit Myst island for real. And that's, ladies and gentlemen, what this version is all about. Experiencing MYST like never before.

Sure, you can say that yet another MYST remake is an obvious money grab. But guess what? It isn't. This game? It's as sincere as it gets. And the attention to details is a nice proof of that. This game is not just realMYST with VR support. In this version we'll be able to pick up and examine items for more atmosphere and better understanding of what's going on, there are advanced motion controls (we'll manually open drawers, climb ladders and so on), there's a juicy haptics feature and so on. Remember when Ubisoft tried to make things to feel more realistic, more personal in MYST IV by letting us knock on surfaces and hear how they sound? That's exactly what Cyan tried to achieve here. They tried their very best to let us live and breath their masterpiece.

Did they succeed? Yes! Dear Lord, yes! The new version of MYST feels fantastic! Even though I know this game by heart, I felt like I was playing it for the first time (especially since this version also comes with an option to randomize the puzzles for those who still remember all the solutions). VR factor was that certain something that MYST needed to revive its old magic. And I'm so-o-o envy for those who'll play this awesome game for the first time. It's a bit tricky matter, though. I mean, MYST? It's one of those games that you should play without guides. Even though it'll probably look a bit confusing at the beginning, it actually isn't and you'll have all the necessary hints. Like Millers once said, a good puzzle is the one that doesn't make you want to blame the developers after solving it. And that's what this game is all about. You explore, you try to figure things out and you enjoy the unique worlds that feel real like never before.

Cyan also payed a lot of attention to people with disabilities. For example, some puzzles in this game revolve around sound. Which used to make them impossible to solve for people with hearing loss in the original game. Here? There's a special feature that lets you enable subtitles for every important sound. Awesome stuff. Sure, I have some complains too. HTC Vive controls are not as good as they were supposed to (this game was developed for Oculus), there's a weird sound bug, which disables the sound in your headset when game's window isn't active, one of the achievements is broken and most importantly, there's no Rime Age from realMYST. You know, the one that served as a direct bridge to RIVEN (a sequel to MYST). Sure, it was a tiny little Age and it makes sense not to include it as long as they have no plans to give RIVEN the same treatment, but you know what? They totally should. Because honestly, MYST series is amazing. And seeing it getting such a careful and beautiful treatment? It feels amazing. Dixi.

I'm a huge fan of the original Myst, having played and beaten it all the way back in 1994 when my cousin received it for free along with his purchase of a PC with a shiny new CD-ROM drive (ooohhhhh). Later, once I could afford my own machine, I bought the game so I could play through it again. Later, I bought RealMYST and was blown away by the care and attention to detail they put into the game. It was clear that the developers loved their product and made sure to present it in as polished and memorable way possible.

Over the years, I've continued to buy every single game in the series, sometimes multiple times. So of course I leapt at the chance to snatch this game the moment I heard of its existence.

I only wish I could recommend it.

The graphics look nice, and I already know the world-building and gameplay are solid. The addition of a random solutions mode is nice, particularly for those of us who already know how to beat the game in under 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, the primary reason I bought it was to play in VR, and I am appalled at how badly broken the game is, at least on my Vive Pro. The controls are confusing and don't function the way they're described in the help section. The menus are busted and don't properly display a cursor or accept interaction most of the time. In game, I couldn't even figure out how to use teleport movement, regardless of which way I tried to manipulate the buttons, and the control mapping is just atrocious and impossible to use. The interactions don't feel normal or natural with the wand controllers, and numerous display glitches occur when doing relatively basic things like opening the menu or interacting with objects in the game. After about 15 minutes of pure frustration, I exited the game and requested a refund.

Cyan, you guys are way better than this. Please fix this garbage so that I can finally experience Myst the way it was meant to be seen. Unfortunately, I see the last patch was over 3 months ago, so you guys have probably already taken the cash and run, but here's hoping you're just taking a hiatus or spending the necessary time to overhaul the bad experience.

Myst is such a huge and important title in not just the adventure game genre history, but the history of videogames overall. It’s legacy remains strong, affecting games and creating new genres to this day. And I have never finished it until now. In fact, I’ve tried playing the original game, it’s re-releases/remakes and sequels over many years and they’ve never clicked with me. And the majority of its influence on adventure game design was, frankly, terrible. With many titles abandoning any attempts at good design, opting to push cool visuals and obscure “puzzles” instead.

But I really wanted to get what Myst is about. And in this new 2021 remake of the game, I think I finally got it and was able to enjoy the game.

While far from being the first title of this kind, original Myst was a first person adventure game that focused on puzzles. Unlike the original game, and similar to the realMyst re-release, the new version allows you to traverse the locations in real time, like one would in a modern first person title, instead of relying on static frames and transitions between them. As you explore the locations, you would be constantly stumbling upon some interactive objects that you can try to do something with. However, and that’s what was really different about Myst and its later clones, the puzzles were often built not around finding and using items. But rather on understanding what these interactive objects do and how they are connected to other elements on the location. In other words – you wouldn’t just pull the first lever you find in this game, expecting this to be a solution to something, you had to first figure out what that lever does and then decide if you want to pull it and when to do it.

If this sounds like very obscure and intentionally cryptic puzzle design, it’s because it is. And it’s the reason why I didn’t really like the games in the first place. You are often required to run around the location to see if there are any hints around and remember how everything looks. Then you would try interacting with some levers. And then you would run around again to see if anything changed. It’s not the case for the entire game, of course, and some of the sections are far more straightforward, but nonetheless the puzzles are usually about understanding the connections, rather than anything else.

And that’s where the additions and changes to the 2021 version make the whole process so much more convenient. Just being able to mouse look, walk or sprint around changes everything. Yes, it can still get tiresome, especially if the puzzle has strange artificial limitations (why is one puzzle timed, for example, I will never understand). But the gameplay is so much more fun. The ability to take “photos” in-game and view the hints, instead of writing it all down physically with a pen, is also a nice touch. And in general, the game just feels better to play than any of the previous iterations. Hence why I didn’t drop the playthrough this time.

Which is why I was able to see the merit in Myst design too. I guess the experience with later entries tainted my memories of the original game. And the screen by screen movement was making the constant guesswork more tedious. But now, with free roaming, I was able to enjoy the mysteries and hidden connections for most of the game. It was fun to investigate the strange devices, entertaining to learn more about the story (that was likely inspired by The Chronicles of Amber), exciting to visit strange worlds.

Not that it was all flawless, of course. There are a couple of puzzles that still, even now that I’ve solved them, make little sense to me and seem obscure just for the sake of being obscure. The addition of the photo mode, while nice, is not as useful as it could be, since you cannot see the photos and the gameplay at the same time (so taking a picture with your phone is still more useful). And the absence of the realMyst additional world is strange – although I’ve seen mentions of its possible inclusion in a future update.

That said, I enjoyed playing Myst in this newest iteration. And I finally get why people loved it so much and why it has inspired so many clones that, sadly, lacked most of the positives Myst has while keeping all of the negatives. If you’ve never played Myst before and this kind of an adventure game sounds interesting to you, definitely give this version a go. If you liked Myst originally, well, I don’t know if you will like this one better or not, but I’m sure it will have things that you will like to experience again in a new way. And if you are like me, who didn’t like Myst after trying it or its sequels before, maybe give this one a try anyway. There’s a chance you will enjoy it like I did.

Had a lot of fun completing this game. The last time I tried, I was probably 10 years old and had no idea what I was doing. This game has quite a few good puzzles and I loved the overall look and aesthetic of the world and the different ages. There were only two places that I needed a hint, and of those two, one was just me being dense, but the other did feel unfair (the inside of the clock tower). But you can figure out all the other puzzles if you think them through. I'm hoping they make a Riven in Unreal Engine as well.

I picked this up as a first time player and am having a blast so far. I was worried it would be the kind of game that relies on nostalgia to be good, this definitely does not. I've been playing in VR and it's gorgeous but I'm sure it's also great in 2d. I will say the VR controls could use some touchups, I did not like that I had to hold down the grip button in order to read an entire book. I'm up to the library on the first island and started to experience some hand fatigue by like book 3 and had to stop playing.
Overall the takeaway from my review should be: If you've never played Myst, don't be scared of it, it's great. And the VR is a great addition but not necessary and has some drawbacks.

...I mean... it's Myst, one of the greatest and most unique. It created a genre of its own, and this is just an updated version for today without losing any of it's original greatness. This edition only seems to enhance it toward fulfillment of its original vision with technological possibilities that were unavailable back when it all started.

I purchased the game to play in VR with my family, however due to how difficult it is to press exactly up on the control stick, and lack of movement rebinding options it is unplayable for me.
I am using the Valve knuckle controllers.

They do not have an option to rebind teleport. This would solve my issue with the game. I purchased this game to enjoy with my family in VR who can only use the teleport movement.

I have not been able to play the game because of this. So this review is only about the lack of rebinding, and movement issues.

Played with VR headset (HP reverb G2)
Time to finish: 7h

Rating: 7/10

= Graphics are ok, but not special
+ movement is smooth

The puzzles are old school: apparently the very same from 25 years ago, when you had to use your brain, make notes with pen and pencil and had no auto-mapping at hand. As much as I appreciate to play Myst in VR, the old school puzzles have their drawback. Example: (mild spoiler ahead!) In the underground railmaze, with no automapping, I would normally draw the labyrinth on paper. Wearing a VR head set with two controlles in my hands, this is not possible (or rather: complicated).

My recommendation: Myst is for old school players that do not hesitate to look up the correct path for the Maze on the www.

About 10 hours ago, I watched a breakdown by one of the original devs explaining how they both took advantage of, and were limited by the CD rom when designing the original. Seeing some of the gameplay, I decided to pick it up. About an hour later I was playing, and another 5 or 6 hours and I finished the game in one sitting. Really, really phenomenal game, I was a bit worried going in that I would not be able to form an attachment as I was not even born when the original released, but I really had nothing to worry about because this game pulls you right in from the start. With the exception of the mines, I managed most of the puzzles without resorting to walkthroughs, they sit in the perfect spot between intuitive and confusing, intelligent and simple.

All around the game is a lot of fun. Just do yourself a favour and be observant, or you will miss things. The game does not hold your hand, and it's better for it.

I've tried every other remake of Myst, and this is the first one that actually ran on my computer, so it has that going for it. Unfortunately, after waiting for so long to play this legendary classic I find that it kind of sucks, actually. The whole game basically only has eight puzzles (one to get into each of the secondary ages and one to get out of it), and a good fraction of them have extra baked-in tedium in their execution in what I can only understand as some kind of archaic means of warding off brute-force tactics.

Another problem I had with the puzzles is that many of them require you to write down a complicated password and use it in a different area. Usually, I have no problem with this, and in fact I'm rather proud of the crazy notebooks I've kept for some games. But in those games I didn't have a headset strapped to my face. Seriously, I have no idea how Cyan could expect anyone to play this in VR. Even if you were willing to take the headset off all the time to write stuff down, there's just no practical way to refer back to it while still being able to input your solutions. VR integration is fundamentally at odds with the puzzle design. Hopefully they realize this before Firmament releases.

I do love Myst's design philosophy in theory - tactile machinery and puzzles that span entire areas - and I love the modern games that carry it forward (like Quern, The Room, and Cyan's own Obduction). I even recommend playing this if you have the Xbox Game Pass. But there just isn't enough good here to justify a modern asking price any more, if there ever was.

What a wonderful time I had revisiting the magical world of Myst. I don't recall much of the original, this served quite well at bringing back all the memories from my childhood. The reimagined graphics look stunning in the unreal engine. There's a few bugs that I'd rather not exist, but then so were there in the original. All of the sounds are taken from the original, and there is the optional video setting that uses the old full-motion video recordings and it's honestly a great addition -- just how I remembered it.

As for the actual gameplay, well, there's not much to say other than how much of a classic it is. It's definitely not a surprise it was one of the best selling games at the time!

This is a tricky one for me. I was first introduced to Myst at a really young age. I used to watch my parents solve the puzzles together with the images projected onto our living room wall using my dad's data projectors from work. The world blew my mind as a kid. And this remake was able to showcase the same atmosphere with quite a bit of nostalgia. The various worlds look fantastic with this new re-texture, mostly... Sadly, there are a couple visual issues though.

WARNING, mild spoilers ahead!

Firstly, there are some strange lighting flickers at times. Notably on the gear island and in the cave with Atrus. I tried turning RTX on and off but it made no difference. It was like the lighting in the scene would be flashing and the surfaces that had this light projected on it would go from bright to dark rapidly, almost like a strobe effect.

Secondly, the characters... oh god, these are bad! It's incredibly upsetting that the devs decided to ditch the original footage for this. After doing some research I read on Reddit that Cyan decided not to use live actors like they did in the original due to issues on VR, since VR was a big focus of this game they went with 3D renders instead. Personally, I think this is unacceptable. I remember seeing a video on YouTube which explained how Cyan used brilliant software engineering to overcome the limitations while making the original for the Macintosh (back in 1993). And yet in the remake they went with a half assed ugly garbage 3D render instead of sticking to one of the best aspects of the original game. Seeing a live action actor in the original game was one of the most incredible things I'd ever seen. It was really immersive and made you feel like your actions mattered, like this was real life almost. What they presented here in the remaster looks like shit, especially when you see the characters up close. It really kinda ruined the ending for me cause I couldn't stop thinking about how bad it looked. Personally I think they should've used the original live action footage with some upscalling to modernize it then just change the end scenes so you can't walk around, that way you don't have to worry about multiple camera angles distorting the image.

As far as the puzzles go, they are fantastic. I beat the entire game in less than 6 hours though, which is kinda short for a 30 dollar game. The pacing is quick for a modern puzzle game but in '93 it was probably a hard game. Plus in the original you had to click to walk a few feet at a time and each scene took a few seconds to load whereas now you can just sprint across each island in like 30 seconds. All the puzzles are the same as the original which also had to adhere to hardware limitations. So I won't fault the game for the amount of content since it stuck to the original set of puzzles (thankfully).

The camera feature kinda sucks too, you can't cancel the camera action. If you pull it out, you have to take a picture and then go delete it, pretty annoying. You also can't check images while working on a puzzle, you have to back up and then pull up your images. Also, you can't go from one image to the next like a sort of slide show, you have to hit back and then navigate to the next image. These are simple things that should've been ironed out, just feels like a half baked implementation.

I didn't have any glitches other than the light flickering, so that's really good. Movement and object interaction was perfect.

The music and sound effects are amazing! This game sounds so cool and mysterious, I love it.

Can I recommend this game? Well, yeah, sort of. This is another example of why Steam should add a neutral review option. I won't tell anybody to pay 30 bucks for it, that's a lot if you ask me. All the content is exactly the same. If they put more effort into the characters and used live action actors like the original, then maybe I could justify the base price tag. I wish I paid 20 bucks for it, at most. Which makes me sad cause I really wanted this to be amazing. Personally I think Obduction is worth more than this game because of the amount of content and how polished it was. Which is sad cause Myst is legendary and is a better game overall.

Also, if you aren't playing in VR, you should play on a big 4K TV with a controller. Looks and feels pretty great.

TLDR:
Great game. Alright remaster. Buy on sale.

A very enjoyable and beautiful recreation/re-imagining of the PC puzzle classic. It's an absolute joy to revisit the settings and puzzles I enjoyed so much (though I only played Myst for the first time about 5 years ago) in VR; it's a wonderful experience. Something negative about the visual style though is the 3D models of the characters in place of the FMV. FMV is of course very dated and would look somewhat out of place in a modern recreation of the 90s game, but the models feel much more fake than anything else in the game, and take me out of it immediately. I feel like for the upgraded PC version it makes sense for them to do more graphically intensive visual upgrades, but it's almost worth launching with Quest graphics just to have the less jarring video segments. Overall, it's very solid.

Finally in VR. As, to me, it always seemed the right way to be played.
I felt immersed even when played over and over again on Sega Saturn back in the day. Now the immersion is full.
And with the new random feature, it gets even more replayability.
The shores of Myst Island awaits.

I miss the day cycle though.

I played the original Myst back in the summer of 1994 with a good friend of mine. We had no Myst Players Guide, so had to figure out all of the puzzles on our own. It was such a satisfying/enjoyable game. This remake of the original is beautiful and I appreciate the developers working hard to meet the fans expectations/requests. Great game that my wife and I love to come back to again and again.

A fantastic update to the original Myst, and worth it even if you've played previous remasters of the game (realMyst, realMyst Masterpiece Edition, etc).

The best version of Myst. I love most of the changes made(not the 3D character models). Of anything else I would have changed the time of day of the Channelwood Age to be closer to night or maybe dawn. The way the other ages look is amazing from the rolling fog and light shafts of the Mechanical Age to the shooting stars of the Selenitic Age and the waves of the Stoneship Age in VR especially. Making the final marker switch potentially randomized is also a welcome addition. I don't know what else to say other than this is an all-time classic. Myst was the first full PC game I ever had and I will always love coming back to it.

Myst Fan Forever
Been loving this game since the 1990s. Every so often I go onine to see if there is a version of the game for the system I am on. Whether computer, or psn or xbox every time. So when I got the Q2 for my birthday did the same. at the time it wasn't available, but I still did a search every now and then. And then there it was and I couldn't believe it. Got it right away. Love this game, love it even more in VR. Haven't had time to get into it too much but so far it's everything I hoped for and more. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Myst IS NOT for everyone. Need to really like solving puzzles and thinking outside the box. If the VR version gets overwhelming play it on desktop first so you have a pen and paper handy to take notes (or search online for help), then play it again in VR.

I was hoping for a much better experience in VR. I've seen better graphics and optimization in VRchat.
Running it in VR I was getting about the same performance as the original 1993 version on my i486 and Matrox Millennium with Matrox Impression add-on. I still have hope that the fan made version of Riven, if it ever comes out, will be better than Myst VR.

Ah, the nostalgia. Christmas 1994, a 486 PC running Windows 3.1 under DOS and a 12 inch CRT monitor.

Fast forward 27 years and this present day 3D remake retains all the magic and mystery of the original.

I've played Myst ever since I was a little kid, and have been a big fan my whole life, so I may be a bit biased, but I'll try to be objective here.

TL;DR: This is the best version of Myst, but it's not the most polished and could use a lot of improvements in the sound department.

Positives:
Myst's core elements, across all releases of the game, are great, and I've always recommended people try it out. The story, puzzles, and places are all enjoyable to dig into. As a kid I just played Myst to explore its surreal worlds, but as I've gotten older I've also learned to appreciate the puzzles and the story and the way it's told. It has some rough edges and a bad puzzle or two, but it's absolutely worth playing, and this release smooths some of the issues of older releases out, with a handful of tweaks and accessibility improvements, making it even more enjoyable for newcomers.

This is by far the best looking version of Myst! A massive improvement over realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, which felt lacking in art direction. Each age has its own color palette, textures are nice, and effects like volumetric fog and sunbeams make the worlds feel more atmospheric than ever before. There's a great attention to detail as well. Things like seeing oil in the water below the Mechanical Age fortress, a damaged bridge in Selentic, or water dripping from the stairs in the Stoneship lighthouse help breathe a little bit of extra life into the game.

VR support is something I've wanted in Myst for a long time, and it's great here! There are some aspects of the VR experience that I hope are improved later (Which I'll discuss below), but even in the game's current state VR is absolutely the best way to play Myst. Being able to look around as if I'm standing in these places is incredible, and there are a few beautiful locations made breathtaking in VR. Playing on a standard display is also good. I don't think free-roam is quite as good to control as the classic point-and-click style, but I feel the control scheme used here is better than the one found in previous free-roam Cyan games, which often have you awkwardly switching between controlling the cursor or the camera. This game simplifies interactions so that that doesn't happen as often.

Complaints:
The sound design in this game leaves a lot to be desired, *especially* in VR. The credits don't have anyone listed as a sound designer, and it shows. While most of the sounds themselves are fine (Although there's a handful I don't think are good, like the loud electric buzzing from the power cables on Myst Island or the strangely out-of-place water ambient loop in Channelwood), it's mainly the way they are played in-game that needs worked on. For one, I didn't notice any audio spatialization, so while you can tell a sound played to your left is coming from the left, it doesn't actually *sound* like it's there next to you. Sounds often pass through walls, so, for example, when you first link into Selenetic, you can hear the wind and the ocean as if you were sanding outside, even though you're inside a closed space. Ambient loops awkwardly fade in and out as you move from area to area. There's also many instances of sounds not being present when they should be, such as the ocean ambience quieting down when you go behind the clock-tower, or a lack of ocean noises when standing outside in Mechanical. There are also a handful if issues with audio quality. Pops when some sounds loop, audible compression artifacts, or sounds from the original Myst being used which clash with the new sounds. These are a just a few issues I noticed while playing.

Lastly, I just don't feel that a lot of the sounds in this version are as interesting as in the original. The sounds lack the very mechanical, detailed qualities that the original had. For example, compare the tower rotation elevator in this game with the original. In the original when you press the button, you hear a loud thunk, then the elevator starts moving up, and alongside the motor sound you hear squeaks and groans. When the elevator reaches the top you hear a small clang, followed by the buzz of the elevator light turning on. In this version, a lot of that detail is gone. I know this last thing is subjective, but I feel like most of the sounds for the mechanical things in this version of Myst sound too clean, too simple, and as a result just aren't as memorable or interesting to listen to.

The reason I complain about the audio so much is that sound is *half* of what makes VR immersive. One of my favorite VR experiences is Aperture Hand Lab because the spatialized audio in that game makes me *feel* like I'm really there. There's a lot of VR games where I wouldn't care much about whether the audio was spatial or not, but games like Myst, where one of the main goals is to be as immersive as possible, need immersive audio. As it stands, while I enjoy looking around Myst, I don't really enjoy listening to it, and the audio often breaks any immersion I have, rather than enhancing it. Cyan, if you don't have a dedicated sound designer at the moment, I hope you'll consider hiring one. Your worlds deserve the best audio possible.

So that's my big complaint about the game. Another major element I wish was better though was the VR interactions. Many of these are quite good but there's a few that just aren't satisfying, mainly anything involving levers. The marker switches feel very flimsy for example. They don't feel like they click into place like you'd expect. You just move it up or down and it somehow stays in position when you let go of it. The problem is nothing has any resistance. Compare this to the interactions in Red Matter, which create the illusion of things clicking into place or being hard to move by making it so they don't always respond to your movements 1:1. This added detail makes the interactions in that game at lot more satisfying.

Lastly, I feel the game is lacking polish in a handful of places. Things like the intro Myst book animation looping after looking at it for too long, the screen fading to black when lights turn on or off, the lack of credits music, objects instantly snapping back into place when you let go of them, still images being used when looking through the tower window, no page turning sounds for the journals in VR, etc. None of these things on their own are that bad, but they add up, and I think improving lots of these little things would improve the game quite a bit without too much effort.

In regards to the CG characters, I certainly think they could be improved, but I'm glad Cyan is attempting to use them in favor of the FMV cutscenes. Don't get me wrong I love the old FMVs, but there are a few moments in this game, especially in VR, that make the switch to 3D models absolutely worth it. I do hope they are improved in the future, mainly in how they're animated, but I don't have an issue with them.

In summary, this is the best version of Myst. It looks beautiful, and the improvements made to the game design make it a bit more sensical and much more accessible. The VR support is something many Myst fans have been wanting to be brought to the series for a long time, and is easily the best way to experience the game for newcomers and old fans alike. The audio design overall is disappointing, I think many of the VR interactions could be improved quite a bit, and I'd like to see more polish put into the game, but those things don't make this a bad experience, far from it. The good here far outweighs the bad. It's just not the best it could possibly be, but I hope someday it is, and that's why I bring these things up. I'm trying to be constructive and I hope Cyan uses everyone's feedback to make this or, at the very least, their future projects near perfect.

Now somebody please convince Tim Larkin to return to Cyan. :P

Played in VR on Valve Index with RTX 2080ti, Ryzen 9 3900x

Regarding the graphics, don't listen to the negative reviews. This game looks sharp in VR, textures are very detailed. If someone doesn't know how to use ingame graphic settings (or SteamVR settings like Super Sampling) that's not the developers fault. Adjust 3D resolution scale, set AA to low, disable DLSS and voila, sharp.

If you want it to look even sharper, just go to:

USERAppDateLocalMystSavedConfigWindowsNoEditorEngine.ini

add

[ConsoleVariables]
r.DefaultFeature.AntiAliasing=0
r.Tonemapper.Sharpen=1
r.TonemapperQuality=1
r.TonemapperFilm=0
vr.PixelDensity=1.2

----
r.DefaultFeature.AntiAliasing=0 not necessarily needed, just try with and without it.

This game looks great and plays abolutely fine in VR.

Literally always buy any version of Myst or Riven released because they're the greatest games of all time. Myst III was alright too, wish they'd release a PC version. The rest were meh.

Anyway this one is good. It has Ray Tracing so it looks beautiful if you have a sufficient card. The only things I'm not loving:
1.) There are sometimes massive frame rate drops, solved by minimizing and maximizing the game. Must be a bug. It's release day so they will probably fix it eventually. Minor inconvenience.
2.) They replaced all the live action faces with cartoon-like digital animation faces. No bueno. Removes a lot of the atmosphere and is out of place with a lot of the rest of the mood/setting

I haven't utilized it yet but the randomization feature for the puzzles will increase replay value substantially. I would use it in a remake of Riven because I remember a lot of the solutions, but it's been decades since I've played Myst so I stuck with the classic solutions.

By the way, Cyan, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING do a remake of Riven just like this, but please don't use cartoons, do it the old fashioned way with the live action characters, even if it looks weird by today's standards, we don't care!
