Gray Mantis. This game is crashing upon starting a new game. I cannot even play it to give it an honest review. Fresh install crashes on starting new game on two of my PCs. I need the game to start. I am a huge fan of this genre and I want to support and encourage development of these types of games. Please fix it or I will need to get a refund. Right now I cannot recommend this game in its current state but I will change my review afterwards if it launches on fresh install. I shouldn't have to find workarounds to play your game on my system. It wastes my time. I will give this a steam recommendation for now because I don't want to contribute to the negativity here. From what I saw in the trailer it looks pretty cool and I can judge for myself later.

HUGE monumental update by the dev have made this game really shine.
Long range throwing daggers, moddable keyboard layout, audio & music sliders, visual upgrades, health bar of foes, a whole new level, new foes, etc, etc. ... the works.
Usually play offline, but went online to review after these surprising upgrades, kudos to the dev, fine job indeed.
Very impressed, now highly recommend the game.

Having nearly reached the end of dungeon 2: This is... okay. Graphics are decent for an indie, but overall the game feels awkward and simplistic.

Bug: If the map is up, you can't change items in the inventory.

Thoughts:
1: Escape should be a general exit from all menus/screens.

2: There should be sound/music volume controls.

3: I second the reviewer that noted the FOV was awkward. It does feel like moving in half steps, and if you watch the map, you are. This isn't something that necessarily needs to be changed, but it is a departure from the genre norm.

4: Combat is rather simplistic in this iteration and could use a re-think. Perhaps a rock, paper, scissors arrangement of strengths/vulnerabilities for dealing damage and a similar set of dodge/damage reduction actions for the player? Random, untelegraphed behavior should generally be avoided as it means the player cannot learn/manage.

5: Some form of ranged attack/defense would also be welcome. It is a little odd to have a gun that only works at point blank range as well as creatures that have ranged attacks but won't use them until you have been to point-blank range.

6: Walk pace should be modestly faster.

7: Would be nice to either allow the fountains to overfill the flask, or re-filling the flask only drains the fountains of the replenished charges instead of completely consuming the fountain.

8: Do the mushrooms provide any benefit in the game? (the first one killed me, so I never tried another) If not, ditch them after the first. If so, some kind of explanation should be available, preferably in-game.

9: Eye interactions should both be repeatable and the player immobility instantly terminated with any key press.

10: Have some kind of indicator on the map for visited but unpressed switches.

11: Unvisited sections of the map revealed by the map item should look different than visited sections.

12: The player should get the gun after no more than a couple packs of bullets. I was getting concerned and thought I missed something when I had all these bullets (almost max capacity) and no gun to shoot them with.

13: Player should be able to skip the intro. Escape key is the recommended way.

14: Should be able to scroll around the map. This also means a re-center command for the map should also be available (though that might be as simple as closing then reopening the map).

This is the first time I'm writing a review. The sole reason I'm sharing this is because I honestly think that the developers had good intentions and that the a lot of enthusiasm went into the game. I will list the issues in order of importance, from the most glaring ones to the least problematic ones.
EDIT: I have finished the game. Between my initial review and this edit, I have even considered switching it to a positive review, but I'll let it stay like this for now.

1) The most important thing you need to know about this game is that it is not a dungeon crawler in the sense you may think. True, you crawl through a dungeon, but that's it. There is no character creation, stats, experience, levels. The sole improvement your character gets are improved weapons and magic, but you won't be 'choosing' from the arsenal because they all work exactly the same and of course that you'll always use the best one.
2) The best way to describe this game is 'a puzzle maze with resource management and reflex based combat,' resource management being primarily your health and, to a much lesser extent, ammo and magic. Again - this is not an RPG, even though it really looks like one.
3) The game is absolutely static. The monsters do not move, so your sole strategy with them is how to avoid them hitting you as you approach them, or perhaps dodging their missiles. Because there is no character creation, and because of static placement of all treasures and monsters, you will never have the need to play this game twice.
4) Huge majority of puzzles in this game are 'find a key.' Dungeon layout is generally bland, with some very weird design choices. For example, at one point you need to move a boulder to get a key. To move the boulder, you need to find a magical object that improves your strength. You find it, remove the boulder and get the key... and that strength increasing item is never used again. It simply backtracks you for no reason. At the final level, you need to fight four beefiest monsters in the game. You defeat them, a magically sealed doors unlocks aaand... it's one more of those gargoyles.
5) The game only saves once you leave a level. You cannot save mid level. This is extremely problematic due to reasons listed under 3), because if you die, you will be forced to play the exact same level in the exact same manner until you finish it through in one session. Those sessions can last a while. EDIT: The developer said that this is in order to avoid save scumming, but if the way ADOM does it is somehow implemented (the game only saves if you quit and loads when you start a game - you can't misuse save files for scumming) it would lead to a much more pleasant experience.
6) I had a bug in the second level when my character went through a wall. He managed to leave the void and enter the regular level, but could not interact with objects. This made the level unwinnable, and, again, I had to play thought it all over again. It happened again on the 7th level, just as I was about to reach for the ladder for the 8th level. These are horrible bugs in a static game.
7) On ammo and magic - don't think for a second that these are ranged. They only serve to increase your melee damage output. As said before, some monsters do use missile weapons, but these are only triggered if you enter their melee range. The purpose is to make you waltz tad more than you would with a typical melee monster.
8) The controls are kinda wonky, but the biggest issue is putting 'page down' for menu. If you begin a game immediately like I did, you will have no idea how to attack or do pretty much anything, and you cannot bring up the controls menu if you don't happen to hit 'page up.' I have no idea why this particular key was chosen for this function, and not the traditional Esc. EDIT: The developer has included a keybinding feature.
9) It is not worth 12 euro. Price of 12 euro raises expectations. Spiritfarer, for example, is a stunning game for only 4 euro more. It could be worth 12 euro if these issues were resolved, especially 1). The Legend of Grimrock had some replay value due to different classes.
10) Intro drags on for too long without really raising the tension. Thankfully you only see it once. It is an endless ride in a boat with what I can assume was intended to be a jumpscare to which neither the protagonist nor me flinched.

These were some of the most glaring issues. Again, I am posting this comment solely as a help for developers to improve their game. I am more than willing to edit / delete / up my review if the game improves. To end on a positive note, I'll comment on some things the game did right:

1) Graphics look good. Some of the monster designs were rather creative.
2) The appearance of the dungeon is rather nice, and wanting to see how the next level looks like, with its monsters, was my primary driving force to finish the game.
3) While the music is by Kevin McLeod (aka - free), it really compliments the game well. I especially enjoyed the tune on the mummy level.

In the end, I did have fun, but that fun came with disappointment and frustration.
