Crysis Warhead is a bless, a frenetic and intense Crysis standalone expansion.

Straight foward, Crysis Warhead pushes the powerfull Cry Engine even more, the level of polishness and refinement of the graphics reaches the peak, also this is come with a better overall performance.
The new lunatic protagonist Physcho was born to this expansion, the gameplay and the Campaign level design was really worked at the finest, also the AI was improved. Superb sound effects and a exclusive new original soundtrack made just for this Crysis expansion.

Very few Standalone expansion reach this level of quality and uniqueness.

Crysis Warhead (Warhead) is a first-person sci-fi shooter developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts in September 2008. This review will cover the campaign and gameplay and technology. I will separately note I am playing through the Crysis series in light of the Crysis 4 announcement. If you are interested, see my reviews of the other games:

Crysis: Remastered
Crysis 2

Campaign

Warhead follows ‘Psycho’ in a five-hour campaign, who is ordered to complete a separate mission and extract valuable intelligence behind enemy lines. This story happens in tandem with Nomad’s mission in the main game, where you may recall Psycho was re-tasked. The campaign is a very fun and engaging experience, which is much better paced and logically tighter than the original.

Warhead expertly expands the Crysis timeline by filling in story elements from the original (not plot holes) such as [spoiler]how the USS Constitution had captured a Ceph machine[/spoiler]. Additionally, Crysis expands the Crysis world through the involvement of Sean O’Neill, who supports Psycho in Warhead, and provides an interesting background on the nano suits program. I will note here that I found the personalities to be fun and compared to the base game, a bit more natural sounding.

Lastly, I found the missions to be exciting and tense, and the mission design resulting in some very fun and diverse objectives. However, I was not a fan of the save system, as I found it a frustrating experience to restart checkpoints due to their length. Additionally, I experienced some glitches with friendly AI becoming randomly and invisibly stuck.

Gameplay and Technology

Warhead changes some of the gameplay mechanics from the original game. It features a nice simplified ammo pick-up system as well as a weapon customisation dial. Further, it adds a new dial to change the mana of your nano suit and I think this complicated the base games’ simpleness of changing your nano suit.

Additionally, I really liked the improved AI. They were smarter in their tactics and they wanted to attack you and they wanted to avoid getting attacked – it was much better than the original game, where at times, the AI stared blankly at you. Otherwise, I found Warhead to be silky smooth, albeit granted I played the 2008 version, and I experienced some minor sound cut-out issues, but not nearly the same amount as the original.

Conclusion on Crysis Warhead

Crysis Warhead was a very fun and enjoyable experience. It included a tight and well-paced campaign that logically expanded the Crysis world and introduced a number of new characters and their backstories. Whilst Warhead is not materially different in gameplay to the original, I highlight the strong improvement to the smartness of the AI. Noting the minor issues, the length, and that it was not re-mastered, I felt this was a good expansion that I recommend on sale.

Game does not start with an error message: activation limit. The DRM literally apparently should be like 2 installs and I doubt that is legal in the EU. I've asked for steam intervention and Steam didn't step in. I strongly recommend to not buy any EA games since this type of problems is extremely common. Since this happen and since Steam did not act, I stop buying games on Steam. Steam lost a client and will continue to lose business with this kind of support. Recommend no to buy EA, recommend no to buy on Steam.

(NOT) RUNNING CRYSIS 20/01/2022

The year is 2022 and I can proudly announce without needless fanfare that the video game known for humiliating the PC scene by nuking down and reducing rigs once thought powerful to ash, has finally been undone by the passage of time and technological advancement.

Yes, we can run you Crysis, but at what cost?

It seems like it was only yesterday when I too, stood humbled, speechlessly gawking at the digits on my screen dwindling below the low 20s. In spite of my indignation, it made perfect sense when the glittering image before me featured jungles of the densest foliage yet, replete with destructible trees and shimmering bodies of water refracting the sky box with a complexity that was until that point, thought impossible.
As if that weren't enough, golden shafts of light fashioned by the Egyptian gods themselves bounced from corner to corner, jumping out at me blinding and terrible.
Steamrolling its way into the PC scene, Crysis would proudly herald the dawn of a new age of fervent, graphics-obsessed disciples and under this new regime, the rules were harsh but undeniably just;
It would bless those with superior e-peens with bountiful eye candy while dealing death and destruction to those lowly rigs who choked beneath the weight of its demanding physics and particle effects. There was no middle ground and no room for penitence.

Indeed, it was a hint at the notion that the preceding decades had short changed us and fed us lies about what it meant to meet the system requirements for a modern-day title.
There is no denying it came as an eye-opener, marking the moment when we realized the full visual breadth of a title borne from the mid '00s was capable of handily surpassing our wildest expectations and perhaps along with them, our technology. It's fun to look back in awe of how new IPs were, at least by modern standards, far more brazen than we imagined, especially when an unproven shooter would be responsible for almost single-handedly driving up hardware sales for that year, fueled by the demands of indignant PCers looking to beef up their battle stations.

Through hazy spectacles, my recollection falters but 2007 would go on to be a memorable year for more seasoned keyboard-bashing mouse-clickers, as titles like the visually impressive Assassin's Creed (which's release interestingly coincided with Crysis), Bioshock, and a certain orange-tinged box were among a few of the highlights unleashed upon the computer realm.

Admittedly, I wouldn't experience Crysis until much later as it released at a moment when I was not versed in computer-dom and yet it was also a time when, after a year-long toil, I managed to scrape together enough to acquire my very first scrappy PC and while the mere concept of running anything remotely modern was a distant thought to my mind, that wasn't enough to quell my excitement at the prospect of having a PC that would serve as a half-decent emulation station, if nothing else.

My hopes were dashed when that starter PC was practically dead on arrival, was quickly sold off for peanuts and it would be another year or so before I would take a second stab at PC assembly, but this time I was a somewhat wiser part picker and made sure to secure the AGP-slotted Geforce 9400 GT which was to be paired with the (at the time) excellent Phenom x3 processor, a setup that I remember fondly for offering a certain air-headed lad countless hours of fun.

Back then I was fairly content in playing catch up with classics from years prior and had not yet fully realized the potential fun to be had within the shooter-scape, quickly shrugging off the FPS as a lesser genre, tainted by its ultra-violent roots that ran counter to my moral obligations as a kid brought up in a preening Christian home.
Simply put, 'Thou shalt not kill' meant violence, even in its mildest recreational, low-polygon form was met with swift reprehension by the clergy.
It was going to take something absolutely unprecedented to help me see past such prejudice and sell me on the concept of the warring elite soldier concealed behind a screen, suffering from some form of spinal paralysis, arms splayed far apart while clutching a firearm for dear life as if trying to escape the constant pursuit of an unseen virtual abyss and ruthlessly gunning down every moving pixel in his path.

One fateful day, I decided to come by the local 'camel district', an open market where every thieving dealer and wares peddler could find solace and consorted to sell forfeited goods and other oddities at dubious-at-best pricing to those with a penchant for low-cost spending, i.e. the broke youth I'd never admit to being.

Somewhere in the midst of all the buzz and hub-bub, was a stand that thrived on the sale of physical copies of everything you could want and maybe more, (a vast variety of ripped DVDs
from raunchy porno to hapless cams of cinema debuts) the highlight of which was a shelf wholly dedicated to PC and console rips that were always sure to captivate the gaze of prospecting kids like myself. And it was on one of those unsuspecting shopping trips that my eyes landed on Crysis Warhead, an FPS unlike anything I'd seen before according to the dealer, a kid not much older than myself.

I searched my shallow pockets and pulled out a tenner, reluctantly waving it up like a hard-won prize I was about to part with.
I arrived home loot in hand and the savvy delinquent I was, something like copy-pasting a crack into the right directory was child's play. In retrospect, it's not something I'm particularly proud of, but some say the simplicity of piracy was somehow befitting of those simpler times.

Lock and loaded, Crysis sat there on my drive, only a few clicks away, awaiting coded instructions.
The mouse took the bait, finally clicking it with furious speed. A drop of sweat trickled down my face as the icon expanded into full view, leading me to a configuration hud chock full of settings and sliders, each more ambiguous than the last. I was indifferent to what they stood for and simply went with whichever jived with the mood. I remember thinking to myself, 'ah, ENTHUSIAST, I really am feeling quite enthused, that's just the setting for me.'
New game and presto!

What followed was a slice of PC history that marked me for life, igniting within me the burning resolve to never leave a graphical setting unchecked, no FOV slider untended to and no resolution 'unmaximized'. It would be maximum game from that point onward, an extremist stance perhaps, but a righteous one.

Could I run Crysis? The road to answering such question was a long, arduous and at times painful path to tread. I'll spare you the banality of such a task, but suffice it to say that on every subsequent computer build I put together, Crysis would be the first measure of its potential and prowess. It wasn't until last year that I finally got around to playing the original with the added flair of SweetFX filter injectors and even then, it was no slouch, keeping my PC on its toes the whole way through. My play-through was even colored with a few marginal 30 fps dips as a nod to those golden days.
Having played it to completion, I can finally say Crysis is still as taxing as I remember, and though not without its faults, it was altogether a fun run and gun romp.

In the end, for all of its rigor, Warhead will always hold a special place for being the one to bridge the performance gap, allowing lesser PCs a crack at the impending fidelity-centric future of gaming while also being my first venture into the FPS scene and offering me numberless days of testing and tweaking settings and perhaps more than that, it works to remind me of the beauty of having a baseless bias reveal itself as an untenable obsession.

Maybe it's high time we retired the tired question of whether Crysis CAN be run to opt instead for a more pressing question:

Can you dig it?

Same as the original game, neat concepts but the dumb AI prevents a proper execution. Here they've tried to spice things up a bit, the campaign moves at a faster pace, with different set pieces. Some work, some don't. But the cutscenes just made the whole thing miserable. They're the unholy child of Shenmue's dialogue and Halo 5's Masterchief vs. Fireteam Osiris combat: clunky, slow, underwhelming. Makes me want to never experience it again.

Warhead is the official expansion for the original Crysis. You get to play as Psycho in a new campaign lasting around 6 hours. The graphics and gameplay still hold up which is impressive since the game was released in 2008.

Game has a bug where it locks weird fps in fullscreen mode with v-sync. In my case 24 fps. Read that a lot of people have this problem. Tried the solution with ALT+ENTER to switch between window and fullscreen. But in my case it doesn´t fix the fps even if hit several times. Sad that this problem seems to be out there since years. Now as I happily have a powerful PC with a RTX 2070 SUPER and other nice specs, I still can´t play this game smooth as the developers don´t fix this issue. Sad about it. With v-sync off, I get screen tearing. In window mode with v-sync it runs so smooth but that´s not how I would like to play it. Monitor is a DELL S2716DG.

Feels low budget, but still a pretty good game.

+ Superpowers really make the combat more varied and tactical.

- Ocasional crashes.
- There is this annoying glitch that you may instantly die by touching a barrel or a pile of debris.
- I wish it was set during the whole Crysis 1 runtime, not only in between of a few missions.
- The suit is seriously underpowered, the power runs out so fast, you can only run like 10-20 meters on super speed, you can only jump like 1 meter up and only 3-4 times before power runs. Maximum damage barelly increases weapon damage, invisibility runs for way too short. Everything about the suit are just extremely underpowered.

There's really not much to tell about this game, it was pretty fun, but that's about it.

A expansion of the original game. Crysis Warhead is the side story of Psycho from raptor squad. Taking place parallel to the events of Crysis. With a new Mustache twirling bad guy Colonel lee. An example of how cleche the story gets in this 4 hour campaign.
However Warhead does make up for it in quality of life improvements to the game play. Instead of having to Press F to pick up ammo. You walk over ammo and pick it up automatically. A few new guns have been added and the AI for the enemy had been Hammered out. Making them challenging not just cheap. Vehicle sections are kinda fun for the most part. Get in a jeep though and wait for that game over screen. Gunplay is still snappy and responsive. A game you want to play on the hardest difficulties and highest graphic settings. Crysis is still a good looking game by today's standards.
Not the best of the Crysis series but still worth a playthroug. If your interested I suggest picking it up on sale.

Do NOT buy this Steam version of the game. I have confirmation from Steam that EA disabled all Steam keys for a number of their games. Also it requires Gamespy installation which is a defunct company. I bought this game in 2009 now can't play it.
Buy from GOG and it's DRM-Free so you can avoid future problems. Same goes for Crysis.

Its 2021 and I played it trough, since there was a re-release of the original Crysis one.
Because I actually could not remember if I had played it trough ..

Everything you have heard about it crashing on a modern PC once every 15 seconds it true.
THEY SHOULD FIX IT. So maybe you should not buy it.
And because of the bugs I cant honestly recommend it.

And it is a DLC. Its short and its not even very challenging.

Other than that I think Crytek has pulled one of the best games out of their hat and they produce solid quality.

Hands down best Crysis game out from what have played. Even if it's more of an expansion to the first game, it's run time does compete with several games in the end with 4 hours of tight action. It's more linear when compared to Crysis, but did like all of the sections and levels it had. Along with few added QoL improvements added like no need to pick up guns for ammo anymore, few new nice guns, much interesting main character Psycho who is in Nomad's team and already familiar, but open up more in his own title.

Story fits well with original Crysis and shows what Psycho did meanwhile Nomad was dealing with his own issues and shows feats what Psycho had to do based on certain encounter towards the end of original game. Psycho is more built character with emotion and his face is shown unlike Nomad's, so it gives more care towards the character. Along with all improvements put in expansion while not repeating all the time same side quest and like wise like original does.

There's clearer bad fellow and motivation through Psycho's storyline and objective to follow. Levels are more varied and interesting and fit well with what happens during originals timeline.

Warhead was a blast to play even though 1 and 2 were lacking in their respective campaign. It's always better to have full time awesomeness than half dodoo and half good.

Crysis Warhead is an action-egoshooter which is a standalone-expansion off crysis, in which you take control of another agent while the incident is happening. There are a few more weapens and vehicles in Warhead. I like it very much but unlike Crysis it is a lot faster than Crysis which makes it shorter and more difficult.

You know when you play a game and there's this one NPC that's way more interesting than the blank-slate protagonist you're actually playing as, and every time they show up they seem to be having way more fun than you, and you wonder why you can't just play as that character instead?

Crysis had an NPC like that.

Crysis Warhead lets you play that NPC, and it's way more fun.

Mais um acerto da franquia

Finalizei o primeiro Crysis ontem e hoje o Crysis Warhead.

this game might as well be dlc for crysis, if you want to play the games cronilogically they both happen at the same time but warhead ends before crysis in the timeline so i guess play warhead first. kinda a 5/10 the end was too hard and repetitive.

Remember when these games killed computers?

Crysis Warhead is the expansion pack for Crysis, or standalone expansion? I don’t know what to call it.
You play as Psycho, the Jason Statham-American who was in your squad during Crysis 1 and follows his adventures during that time. So now with Nomad busy being important, its up to you to fight a North Korean general guy that isn’t really important to the overall plot all that much.

I like his glasses, though.

Crysis Warhead is a shorter, more exciting game compared to its original counterpart. Clocking in at only 3-6 hours long depending on if you know what you’re doing or not, because of it this, Warhead just kind of turns everything up to 11.

From the get go, you’re fighting big boy battles against North Korean forces across the island, teaming up with Marines and other Nanosuit wearing buddies to shoot at NK soldiers and aliens. Its not a spoiler, you see one 10 minutes into the first game.

Although sold as a kind of graphical power house, Crysis: Warhead actually has some neat stuff going on with gameplay, nothing to write home to your neglectful parents about, but its still fun. The nanosuit gives you ways to approach conflict or just avoid it entirely, meaning you can play the game as a balls-to-the-walls action game or a clunky stealth game if you really wanted to.

The NKA or KPA or whatever they’re called have a kind of uniformity to them, I wasn’t even aware that they had classes until someone told me, and you can tell what they’re going to do just by looking at them. Each one of them has a job from entrenching to attacking to flanking to telling everyone what to do.
All of them get shot by me, so its kind of a wasted effort.

Going into the Crysis Wiki, because that exists, there’s actually a lot going on under the hood. I’d be impressed if I didn’t just shoot all of them on sight. Or throw bricks at them.

Warhead does a lot right compared to the original. You have more weapons to play with, more ammo for your main battle rifle so you don’t have to switch it out for the AK early on. Weapon customization returns as well.
I don’t know what else to say about weapon customization.

Warhead also did the right thing by focusing more on the KPA than the aliens, though they’re still there, they’re still unpleasant to fight. Not because they’re hard, they’re just not fun to shoot at, breaking the one rule of video games that is “Shooting aliens=fun”

There was multiplayer at one point. It was called Crysis Wars and I remember playing it, it was fun. You could get enough points by playing the objective and killing enemy players to get a tank that fires nukes. I never got it, but I’ve been hit by it.

EA shut down servers for Crysis Wars back in 2014. At the time of writing this review there are 7 people playing Team Fortress classic. Just thought that was interesting.

Warhead was alright, but nothing to write home about. You’re basically getting a gimped game now that multiplayer is dead. Now, I’m not going to endorse [anything] but there’s still a way to sort of play Crysis Wars. Its kind of a big deal in some circles, its not really the same game.
You probably wouldn’t be interested. Unless you’re a Living Legend.

Buy it for 5 dollars if you really need to play it, but just remember you’re basically getting half a game.

Crysis: I’m English you Muppet gets 6 out of 10.

A hybrid between a cow and a bison is called a Beefalo.

Maximum idiot.

Note: I ran it from a different launcher and Steam didn't recognize it. That's why I only have 0.3 hrs into it.

Unless you're crazy for Crysis series, you won't lose much if you pass this one. There's basically one long mission and that's it. Game's short (3-5 hours) and definitely not worth 20 bucks. Not recommending this one to people who had never played Crysis, because it feels more like a poorly made DLC for its predecessor. It's boring, sometimes buggy, poorly optimized and cutscenes look awkward. Feels like Crytek tried their hardest to hide that cheapness with a bit of an eye candy (it doesn't even look so great either).

Long story short - You like Crysis? Get it on sale. Will you be disappointed? Probably, but for 5 bucks it's kinda worth it. You've never played Crysis series? Don't even bother getting this one.

CRYSIS WARHEAD expands on CRYSIS' story by giving us more variety in battles with the North Koreans and the aliens. There's a battle against an Alien exoskeleton, battles against heavily armored North Korean nanosuit soldiers and a train-level that continues so long it might be 1/4th of the overall game.

Graphics, as expected are slightly more streamlined than the original. CRYSIS was designed to run on the Core2Duo. That is: 2 cores running fast with less emphasis on the GPU. Modern desktops have multicore CPU, in excess of 4, but Crysis can't take advantage of all that excess horsepower. Warhead was designed to do just a little better, but it still isn't designed to really get the most out of my 8 core/16 thread CPU. We have to wait till CRYSIS REMASTERED to see what Crysis can do on our Core i7 and i9 beasts.

If you enjoyed Crysis, Warhead is a logical purchase and definitely a better playthrough than Crysis 2.

This game improves on everything from the original. It plays and runs better. The alien sections are more fun and the human sections are more of the same great gameplay from Crysis. The story is more engaging largely because there's some real characters that are a bit more interesting than Nomad. I highly recommend this expansion.

While Warhead doesn't have the impact of the prior Crysis game, its does have a quicker path into deeper combat, runs fine on Windows 8.1 X64, with a AMD 970 chip-set and a GTX 970 SC GPU with high frame rates.
The game depending upon skill game level played, can still present a challenging and positive experience to play, plus the character Pycho adds a bit more of a colorful flavor in his role, than Nomad in Crysis.
Bought as a package deal with Crysis, and when he two are bought on sale it offers even a better gaming value, have experienced zero issues in game play and highly recommend !

This is not a good Crysis game. It is lacking in every aspect.
-A sub par campaign Beaten in only 3 hours.
-Terrible cutscene' with little to no eye tracking, terrible body movements, and a script so bad it makes Tommy Wiseau's The Room look good in comparison.
- The hardest enemy in the game is the physics engine (Cant tell you how many times i died because i hit a piece of geometry the wrong way, and then proceeded to glitch.)
- Better enemy AI that now has Aimbot™ and smarter enemies that now dodge bullets before you even pull the trigger.
-all in all this experience was sub-par and extremely disappointing given the quality of Crysis 1. I would not recommend buying this game, but if you do. play this first then Crysis 1. They screwed up the plot anyways so it doesn't matter (You are given information that is not discovered until the end of the first game, but this game takes place during the original campaign. How do you screw that up?)

If you wanted more Crysis after playing through Crysis 1, well Warhead is here for ya. Just do beware that there are reasons this game isn't as well known as the original or even the properly enumerated sequals (beyond the memes). That's not to say it's bad. It's definitly worth checking out. It's just a bit different.

Crysis Warhead is like Crysis but with many more annoyances. Your suit super powers last only a couple of seconds; combat is often against superior weaponry like heavy machine guns or armored cars; enemies can see you through bushes and the game is not thin on rail or other forced sections. The pacing is thus all over the place and the so called 'free roaming' of the original is pretty much absent.

I still had some fun with it but hard to recommend except for fps fans like myself.

Do not be mislead, it works just fine on Windows 10. As far as I know, the 50-machine install limit doesn't apply to the steam version, it hasn't crashed at all, and it's actually a really cool game. I've had no troubles whatsoever running it on a low-end 64-bit system, so most of the people with issues with the game must have very inferior rigs. All in all, 10/10

Time was not kind to Crysis. Even with all the bells and whistles turned on, it's an obvious representant of the PS3 era.

The game runs and is playable right now, without any tinkering, but it's got some rendering problems. In my case - the shadows in the buildings are completely broken and there are problems with the objects' transparency, making it quite hard to read, especially where the lighting's poor. The optimisation is painfully bad (though that may be the engine's incompatibility with the Windows 10) and it drops frames like crazy. On the highest settings I was getting slightly over 100 fps on RTX2070,but there were moments where the FPS count dropped below 30,which was not necessarily justified by what was happening on the screen.
No DRM problems and 64-bit support works fine (contrary to the base game, which is completely broken on Steam).

Besides the technical problems, the game's really short, but intense. Still can't get over the unnecessity of the aliens' existance in Crytek's games. It feels much more linear that the base game. To be honest, I am not the greatest fan of the story in the expansion, but it's still an enjoyable shooter.

It is the source English version that plays as well as the Crysis game. There was a flat-out amazing Hungarian version that turned the game into a sort of movie because of awesome voice acting by great actors and perfectly translated / localised text with bold flexibility when it was necessary.

I play games in English all the time because localisations tend to be awful. But not in the case of Crysis Warhead. For me the Hungarian version outshined the original English version with its movie-grade voice work.

It's ok if you want extra content for crysis, and covers psycho story so it's a plus, but the game in this one felt...too slow in a bad way, level design on some areas was bad like the destroyed ship, and sometiems difficulty has a stupid spike, like at once 2 tanks spawned and a f uck load of enemies as well in an area, and the rocket launchers were hidden inside, so I had to brute force my way inside somehow using a vehicle.
and the cutscenes are too long, in a bad way.
non the less the game is ok, if you want extra crysis content you can get it.

If you liked the first Crysis and want more of the action packed gameplay, this stand-alone expansion is what you are looking for

NOTE: people have issues launching the game because of some licence server not responding. You can solve this problem by starting the game via the crysis64.exe in the bin64 file in your game files. Steam won't register your play time though.

Just gonna go ahead an leave a negative review for all the hoops i had to jump through to get it running properly.

-First off the authentication servers aren't even working, you know classic EA stuff... so you'll have to mess around with downloading files off the internet just to get it to run with the steam overlay. Unacceptable and deserves a negative review for that simple fact alone.

-Secondly its CRYSIS... you'd think because its supposedly primarily a PC game it wouldn't have trouble launching under the correct resolution and refresh rates, except nope! This one kept launching at 50hz instead of my monitor's default 144hz so i wasted a whole lotta time trying to get that working optimally. I also remember original crysis shitting the bed with 24hz and having to wrestle with that.

-ok finally, now I can actually launch this stupidly incompetent mess optimally and just enjoy it, right? Well of course not! because if you cant stand toggle to aim you're in luck because Crytek made sure to not provide an option for it and force you to use aim toggle. For that you'll have to mess around with an xml file and create an autoconfig just to hold to aim down sights.

Obviously they wouldn't even provide you with a way to turn off SSAO in the settings either, I mean come on... why wouldnt they force an ugly effect which eats up lots of frames, its not like they're trying to be reasonable here or anything?

Other than that the game runs and plays pretty good, I can recommend it if you dont mind wasting your time wrestling with incompetence.
