Roboter führen bis zu 40 unterschiedliche Aktionen aus, sind bewaffnet mit Gewehren, Maschinengewehren und schweren Raketenwerfern gegen Panzer.
Zwanzig herausfordernde Level sind über fünf Planeten verteilt, die je unterschiedliches Terrain anbieten, das von der arktischen Einöde bis zu Ländern aus Feuer und Lava reicht.
Im Spiel kann zu jeder Zeit eine Übersichtskarte und ein Radar angezeigt werden.
Es gibt eine Menge Gerätschaften, die von dir und deinen Soldaten kontrollierten werden können: Sie reichen von drei Arten von Panzern, Jeeps, Reparatur-Fahrzeugen und gepanzerten Personen-Transportern bis hin zu Feldgeschützen und Raketenwerfern.
Roboter-Anführer halten dich in Form gesprochener Alarmrufe während des Spiels informiert.
Nimm Gebäude in Beschlag und kontrolliere sie, darunter beispielsweise Roboter- oder Fahrzeug-Fabriken, Radarstationen und Fahrzeugreparatur-Einrichtungen.
Du entscheidest welche Art Roboter oder Fahrzeug deine Fabriken bauen.
Z bietet ein bebildertes Spielerhandbuch.

You like strategy and retro games ,are you here on the perfect place.
Simple explained ,your units are robots , with different class/weapons ,and vehicule jeep and tanks or rocket launcher and fixed guns .
The campagne has 20 Maps and as planets : Valley , volcano , winter , jungle and city map creation.
No ressources collect, just command your units and got other zones ,more zones faster rebuild the units in the infantry and vehicules !
Always fun to play .

Ich liebe Z. Das Original habe ich mehrmals durchgespielt, auch heute noch mit der DOS Box. Leider ist das hier nur ein schlampiger, schnell für Windows zusammengeschusterter Müll. Sorry für die harten Worte, aber der Text ist nicht teilweise nicht auf deutsch übersetzt (z.B. in der Hilfe), es fehlt die Option die letzte gewählte Einheit per Leertaste erneut an-/ abzuwählen, es fehlt eine Option um die Scrollgeschwindigkeit anzupassen, es fehlt eine Option, um Rechtsklick für Befehle zu wählen, die Musik ist ein undynamischer Track, der runterdudelt in mieser Qualität und sich nicht mehr dem Geschehen anpasst... Was soll das?! Achja, btw: Multiplayer ist rausgeflogen. Netzwerkspiele sind zwar nicht mehr in Mode, aber... hätte man nicht eine IP- zu IP- Funktion einbauen können...?!
Nun 'was Positives: die KI funktoniert so, wie man es sich erhofft, Grafik ist 1 zu 1 übernommen worden (wobei ich mich über eine Zoom-Funktion wie bei AOE Definitive Edition gefreut hätte) , die Cutsceens sind vorhanden (auch wenn sie am Ende oftmals abgeschnitten sind...)
Man sieht, selbst wenn etwas Positives findet, so stinkt es doch teilweise zum Original von 1996 ab. Traurig und so gerne ich eine Empfehlung ausgesprochen hätte, aber so nicht. Holt euch lieber die Zod- Engine. Habt ihr mehr davon.

Ich fands auch witzig, dass Z für Steam aufgelegt wurde. Als es dass mal zufällig günstiger mit Z-Steel Soldiers gab, habe ich auch gleich mal zugeschlagen. Tja, aber ich bin mir immer noch nicht sicher, ob ich das Spiel empfehlen kann, oder nicht. Es stimmt, was die meisten sagen, es kommt Z-Feeling auf, ich hab das Spiel damals auch sehr gemocht, auch wenn mir die Originalversion bis heute zu schwer ist. Ich habs nie geschafft, den Stadt-Planeten durchzuspielen. Daher finde ich es auf jeden Fall gut, dass es heute eine Schwierigkeitsoption gibt.

Was mir immer wieder aufgefallen sind, sind die unmengen von Fehler im Spiel. Ich weiß, dass ich damals sehr gerne Kämpfer in Verbindung mit BMTs verwendet habe. In der Steam-Version ist es sehr selten möglich, eine Gruppe in einen BMT zu bringen. Ich kann den anklicken, die Robots laufen hin, aber sie werden oft nicht vom leeren BMT aufgenommen. Die Schützen sind auch selten dazu zu bewegen, auf das zu schießen, was sie sehen, bevor sie vom Gegner, zum Beispiel einem Geschütz, selbst erkannt und abgeschossen werden. Ich glaube, das ging damals auch viel besser. Neulich ist mir das Spiel sogar abgestürzt, als mir ein gegnerischer Panzer eine Fabrik zerschossen hatte.

Ein weiteres Manko ist die Steuerung. Es ist nicht möglich, oder ich habe noch nicht rausgefunden wie, eine Einheit abzuwählen ohne ihr einen Auftrag zu geben. Sehr nervig, wenn man den frisch erstellten Kämpfern sagt, die eigene Fabrik anzugreifen, während man doch eigentlich neue Robots in selbiger auswählen wollte. Ich glaube, früher konnte ich mit der Leertaste angewählte Einheiten abwählen.

Auch kann ich mich nicht erinnern, dass in vielen Zwischensequenzen diese nervige Dudelmusik kam. Hatten die nicht durchgehend ordentliche Rockmusik in allen Sequenzen?

Alles in allem, Pros: Schwierigkeitsgrade und höhere Grafikauflösungen, Contra: total buggy und nicht vollständig.

Z war damals so das frischeste im Bereich Strategie was es gab, regelrecht süchtig bin ich danach gewesen.

Die aktuelle Steamversion ist leider absolut noch im Alpha Stadium:

- Steuerung ist eine Katastrophe, keine Tastaursteuerung, Maus ist viel zu hakelig.
- Grafik ist nicht editierbar, eine Anpassung der Auflösung muss dringenst kommen.
- Musik ist nicht von der Lautstärke her regelbar.
- Keine Pausefunktion.
- Die Übersicht fehlt

Aktuell kann ich das Spiel nicht weiter empfehlen, nicht solange einige grobe Patzer behoben worden sind.

Another great crunchy RTS from long ago. Has a neat campaign mode that pretty much walks you through the achievements and plenty of sweet units. It feels a bit clunky but otherwise plenty of fun.

This is one of the best games ever made. Considering the age of the game, it was SO far ahead of it's time it isn't even funny. I can't count how many times I have played this game - the fast paced combat, resource management and sheer sense of panic all add up to a thrilling experience even to this day.

If only all games had this level of attention to detail, and replay-ability! Also it's funny as hell.

Buy it, you will not regret it!

Rather enjoyed the original back in the day. This version seems hardly playable. Graphic resolution seems off, and if you group units, they stay grouped forever, making it very cumbersome to control them.

Game that I always wanted to play as a child but for some reason never could have make it work. Now I finally tried the Steam version and Im happy to report that it's just as fun as I imagined back in the days :) Great comedy humor, nice cartoonish graphics and very catchy gameplay that keeps you playing until its done.
Now I can see why this is became a classic. If only there was more...

The original Z was an extremely engaging early-90's RTS that could have been as big as Command and Conquer if the release calendar had worked differently. It was well-balanced with a terrific and comedic plot and varied units with different strengths and weaknesses in a Rock-Paper-Scissors system. It had a campaign of satisfying length and just the right amount of strategic depth. I can't say enough good about it.

But then there's this port of the game, which isn't just bad, but irredeemably awful and shouldn't even be sold on Steam. A few years ago, some devs made a mobile port of this title for Android devices which was...well, nostalgic I suppose but without the fine controls of the original that you can only get with a mouse and keyboard. The pathfinding was also terrible and there was no way to perform otherwise simple actions like splitting units, which is important when fully leveraging a strategy. It was a rough port intended solely as a cash grab and would not have satisfied anyone who knew what they were trying to do in the game.

The worst part of the story I learned today - these devs have taken the terribly ported Android title, and ported it 'back' into Windows, and with nearly no changes from the mobile title at all. This game features NO hotkeys at all for unit selection or grouping or anything, everything is point-and-click (and it's chancy even then). The pathfinding for both enemy and friendly units is abysmal and fast vehicles will not capture flags right next to them if another robot in the same group is tasked to it, even if walking from the next zone over. The map has one size and the minimap takes up a lot of screen real estate. I could go on, but the true felony is the lack of hotkeys which makes the whole game a clicker of massive size and scope.

This is not how I wanted to see the Z franchise turn out. It was a terrific game and could have built upon the original title rather than becoming a old IP used only for jobbers to make crummy ports for nostalgia cash grabs and LOL's.

Not the original but still a ton of fun. brings back some fond memories.
if you are having issues getting this working properly IE the screen is jacked cause you have dual monitors etc:
Right click on Z
go to properties and set launch options.
type in: -sw
now go to local files and find Z.exe and launch from here.
this will open it in a window so you can go through and adjust settings to proper levels.

First of all, what is Z? Well, let's just say that when I was a kid, we didn't have Company of Heroes. We had Z. Aside from the fact that Z takes a humorous approach and cutscenes here are some sort of mix between Ninja Turtles, ALF and Starcrash, heavily focused on robots, Z is pretty much it – an early game in Company of Heroes genre. You capture the flags, you produce units and you destroy enemy stronghold (tower) to win the level. Pretty basic, but addicting stuff. And like Company of Heroes, Z always looked good. Even though it was released only one year after legendary Command & Conquer, it looked way, way superior. Vehicles used to leave traces on the ground, your troops used to shoot some fauna for fun (a lot of funny effects included), there were funny animated portraits and heck, there were even destructible landscape elements! In other words, like I said, this game is pretty much Company of Heroes from 90s. In a comedy-oriented settings. And I sure have a lot of good memories about it. I mean, let's just admit it – it was one of those games that every RTS fan had on his or her computer back in the days. So, what the heck with a thumb down review? Let me explain.

First of all, it's not the real Z from 90s. What we have here is a modern “remake”. Nothing's wrong with it and Command & Conquer pretty much proved that modern RTS remakes can be cool, but the thing is, Z didn't get proper treatment. What we have here is one of those quick and crappy ports from mobiles. You know, with crappy touchscreen-oriented UI and stuff like that. In other words, the good ol' DOS game was ported to mobiles and then mobile version was quickly ported back to PCs. Because money. I won't lie, it's not like this version is especially bad. Unlike many other ports of this kind, Z feels quite OK. There are no “easy win” features, no cutscenes were removed and even the new UI doesn't really feel that bad. And yet, this version doesn't feel authentic, you don't get the original DOS version as a bonus (like in System Shock case, or in the case of Earth 2140 on GOG) and there's close to no options to make this version feel either more old school or more comfortable for new players.

Another bad thing is that this version doesn't have the expansion kit missions. And yes, I know that most of you, guys, didn't even hear about the expansion kit. I mean, it was only released in Germany and there weren't that many copies made, which makes the expansion somewhat rare, but let's just admit it – modern remake was a perfect chance to finally make the expansion missions available for everybody. Sure, it was only 11 new levels. And all of them were pretty much reworked versions of the first 11 levels from the original game (just on the bigger maps and with all units available right away), but come on! You've made the remake and didn't include the expansion? Screw this. Just... screw this. Command & Conquer did it all right. Heck, it even included exclusive missions from console versions of the game! It was just that – an ultimate version of the good ol' game. Z? It blew it. It's, like, the same old thing. Only worse.

And it's not like the game aged that well either. I mean, sure, it still have small but dedicated community, but all in all, while being a pretty basic “capture the flag” RTS experience without having anything really special about it (cutscenes repeat themselves most of the time, AI is painfully dumb, pathfinding is hell, the maps don't have enough variety, etc), it's not like it's a “must play” title for today's kids. I mean, it's not like it was a good idea to make AI smarter or something like that (the game was balanced for the dumb AI and changing it will also change the entire experience), but it's just that – nowadays, Z is not an essential experience. When it's about games like Command & Conquer and WarCraft? Those still worth your time nowadays. No matter how old you are. Z? It's pretty much a nostalgia trip for old geezers like yours truly. And they totally blew it by ruining the authentic feeling. On mobiles? Sure, this version is worth it. Just because it's a game from your childhood in your pocket. But here, in Steam? It doesn't really feel good. Heck, there's that Russian guy who did way better job with patching Windows version of the game (the one that came with the expansion) for Windows XP. Unfortunately, his version won't work properly on Windows 10, but that's not the point. The point is – I just can't recommend the Steam version. It should have either kept more authentic feeling or go the opposite way and add more modern features like Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection did. Dixi.

Basically a simplified RTS. Really fun, until you realize the AI is almost as dumb as Big Rigs. You point where to go, and the robots can't figure out where to go.... So you end up having to pathfind for them.

When you aren't fighting the AI, it's great.

Z needs to be Remastered. Just like they did to Command and Conquer. Plus we need more levels/maps. They also need to remaster M1 Tank Platoon 2.

This classic tactics games remains one of my favorites to come back to. I played this as a kid, and now have a version on my phone and on my PC. This is a remake of the original with a worse AI and different user interface, but it remains a fun tactical romp of territorial control

A sad and broken mobile port of a great game. You're better off getting the original.
Broken pathfinding, broken AI, missing audio samples, buggy controls, the list goes on.
It's also abandoned so don't get your hopes up for any improvement.
I loved Z, and I still do, but this mobile port is just a disgrace.

This game is soooo retro! It reminds me so much of Command and Conquer, except it has more elements of Company of Heroes in it which is a great feel whilst your playing. One thing I would say is that the scroll speed is very slow! Really fun gameplay and controlling territories!
