Also klare kaufempfehlung. +++

WW2 Szenario.

Opposing Fronts is another great expansion to the Company of Heroes franchise and although I still find Company of Heroes 2 the peak of the series, this is a very close second place. I would only buy this game if you have played through Company of Heroes and potentially Tales of Valor first. Even though Opposing Fronts is great as a standalone game/expansion I still think playing the series in the correct order would be extremely beneficial to anyone who is playing.

If you have played the series before then enjoy the expansion! The developers introduced climates, new units, missions, and some gameplay twists that I found to be really enjoyable and helped my team go buy in a quick and fun way.

WARNING: If you are interested in buying CoH and do not yet own it, just head to the steam page of Company of Heroes (not the legacy version) and buy the New Steam Version of the game, it comes with this standalone AND Tales of Valor.

Short review

Longer, more beautiful, stronger, this could be the motto of Opposing Fronts. The original game was already excellent, this stand-alone is even better since it takes up the basics while enriching them with new possibilities. The addition of a second campaign corrects the main complaint against Company of Heroes and extends the lifespan. In short, no need to procrastinate any longer, after this praise it is clear that we have a new benchmark for strategy games.

Long review

The developers of Relic have made the choice for this release to be a standalone and not an extension, the game seeks above all to conquer newcomers, even if it is obviously also addressed to the old men of the first episode in search of news missions. For the former, let's recall the basics of the gameplay of Company of Heroes. The battles are centered around the capture of strategic points scattered around the map, reminiscent of previous productions by the Canadian studio such as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Depending on their nature, these points yield three types of resources: ammunition, fuel and manpower. Once under the player's control, they give you these resources regularly as long as they are located in a territory connected to the Headquarters. No need for a harvest phase, therefore, or construction of expensive buildings in other such titles, for that matter. The only possible constructions are a few defensive works, such as sites for mortars, machine guns or howitzers. Partly freed from constraints linked to the economy and the development of a base, the player can therefore concentrate on the management of his troops, towards which the game is resolutely turned.

Because we will have to pamper them, these troops. Each of your units is valuable, since over the course of the battles they gain experience, which is used to acquire new abilities. Better to try to preserve your men rather than send them to die without thinking about the risk of having to replace them with newbies. To do this, you have to use the terrain as much as possible to take cover. Anything can serve as a shelter, but a low wall will offer much better protection. Likewise, soldiers can enter buildings to be less exposed. However, keep in mind that everything is destructible, so a tank will easily dislodge them. Tanks, in fact, should preferably be attacked from behind, where their armor is weaker. In short, blindly going for it is never the winning strategy, each assault requires proper planning, which is not an easy task sometimes in the urgency of a situation. All these aspects already present in Company of Heroes are of course found in Opposing Fronts. On this side, the veterans of the first opus will not be disoriented. So let's see now what are the novelties brought by this standalone.

Two new armies are emerging: the British and the German Panzer Elite armored division. Let's start by reviewing the British Army troops. First of all, their base is mobile. It consists of a truck that we can deploy wherever we want, then fold up to move it to another point on the map as needed. Practical. Also, in the vehicles, we obviously find tank models specific to this nation, such as the Tetrarch or the Cromwell. But my favorite is still the huge Churchill. The tank, not the Prime Minister my dude. It is available in several versions modified by the Royal Engineers, known historically as Hobart's Funnies. Specialists will therefore appreciate the presence of the AVRE, equipped with a powerful mortar, or the Crocodile and its flamethrower, very practical when you have to deal with infantry. At the infantry level, officers (lieutenants and captains) can be attached to your sections of riflemen to give them bonuses. Soldiers can dig trenches to establish a line of defense. Gliders are also available to quickly deploy commandos or armor on the battlefield, thus creating as many advanced spawn points. Finally, the command point system is still present and will allow the leader of the British to call for help. For example, a Canadian artillery support, such as the 'rolling barrage', terribly effective against enemy troops.

The British campaign takes place in Normandy, and you will experience many historical events such as the famous capture of hill 112, which we will then have to desperately defend during a counter-attack a few missions further away. All of this will take us until the liberation of the city of Caen. The German campaign, meanwhile, puts you at the head of the Panzer Elite Armored Division in the massive Airborne Operation Market Garden. For those who have skipped their history lessons, a little reminder: this allied operation was intended to bypass the Siegfried line via the Netherlands. It ended in failure. At the head of the Germans, your goal will therefore be to reproduce history by pushing back this offensive. For this, many new units are available. One of the most useful is undoubtedly the auto-tracks (halftrack). With this vehicle, the player has a quick and efficient portable mortar that can pound opposing positions while remaining relatively behind. Panzergrenadiers are also very practical with their heavy armament. They constitute shock infantry. In short, I'm not going to make an exhaustive list of the units brought by Opposing Fronts because there would still be a lot to detail, but they are numerous and varied enough to renew the interest of Company of Heroes and to give birth to new tactics. In any case for the first time that they are playable solo the Germans do not disappoint, the Panzer Elite is really pleasant to handle.

With these two new solo campaigns, this standalone already sets the bar very high in terms of gameplay and lifespan, but the technique is no exception. The game is beautiful, like the original, maybe even a little more thanks to new effects, especially for the weather. However, keep in mind that this game is old, it was beautiful when it released. This game is a great show, a bit like a Call of Duty but seen from above: grenades and shells explode while houses crumble under a rain of iron and fire, all supported by incredibly realistic sound effects and thunderous music. I think I can stop the list of superlatives there, you will understand that the production from Relic was once again grandiose, which after all is not surprising from the creators of Homeworld. I'm just able to find a little flaw that doesn't sound like a fanatic: zooming out isn't enough, we're still a bit too close to the action for my taste. A wider view of the field would have been appreciated. There it is. But it's not this kind of trifle that will stop Company Of Heroes: Opposing Fronts from rising to the top of the pantheon of real-time strategy.

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is an awesome expansion for the base game with lots of additions.

(The reason that I have only 0.1hrs in this DLC is because It can played in the base game and I only want to review it seperately.)

Pros:
- 2 New Factions to play with unique skills (British and German Panzer Elite)
- 2 really good campaigns for both factions (Approx. 8-10 hours to finish)
- Voice acting is quite great
- Great Cutscenes
- Challenging and really intense missions

Cons:
- Some bugs

Tip:
- You don't have to download this Expansion as a standalone game since you will be able to play it in the base game once you buy it. (With the New Steam Version)

10/10 I thoroughly enjoyed this expansion and I can totally recommend it.
