Diese Spiel ist der Wahnsinn!

Ich kenne das Spiel noch aus den Anfangstagen, ... hatte die Original PC CD-ROM kostete damals in Pappschuber mit Anleitung, Poster und einem liebevoll gestaltenen Heft zum Spiel gerade mal 39.99 DM ( nur mal so an die Spieleentwickler von heute die es nicht schaffen für 59€ ein fertiges Spiel zu liefern !!!)
Das Spiel war und ist schon immer eines meiner liebsten Spiele bis neija irgendwann die CD nicht mehr so wollte, leider auch durch eigenverschulden (Kratzer) da halfen dann auch keine Tricks mehr wie CD ins Kühlfach legen usw. ich dachte ich hätte das Spiel für immer verloren aber dann siehe da Steam machts möglich... ein dickes Danke an Steam, das dieser zeitlose klassiker weiterleben darf....

An alle die das Spiel kennen bauch ich nichts weiter zu sagen an die , die es nicht kennen kann ich nur eines sagen das hier ist Geschichte, gelebter Kult. Mir fallen nicht viele Spiele ein die so zeitlos sind.

Es gibt viele alte Spiele - gerade im Bereich der Echtzeitstrategie - die gut sind und ein Remake oder einen Nachfolger verdient hätten. Doch von diesen gibt es keines, welches so hervorragend eine frische Idee in ein Spiel umsetzt, dass es selbst nach über einem Jahrzehnt eine derart unvergleichliche Spielerfahrung bietet wie Sacrifice.

Die hervorragende Grafik und der tolle Sound setzen die vielseitige Echtzeit-Taktik stimmungsvoll in Szene. Einziger Kritikpunkt bleibt die -teilweise- Unübersichtlichkeit mancher Kämpfe. Trotzdem: Kein anderes Spiel bietet diese taktische Vielfalt, kein anderes erzeugt eine dermaßen spannende und dichte Atmopshäre, und vor allem: es gibt derzeit kein Echtzeit-Strategie-Spiel, das die einzelnen Aufträge der Kampagne mit einer derart komplexen und faszinierenden Story verknüpft.

Ich hatte es früher auch mal gehabt. Habs halt laaange wieder gesucht und jetzt wars hier im Angebot. Und ich dachte nur GEIL!!! Ich fand das Spiel damals schon klasse. Grafisch natürlich heute ein wenig überholt aber ich finde sie immernoch ganz ok. Naja .. ich mag auch die 90er pixelspiele... ^.^#
Die Steuerung ist wie damals schon gewöhnungsbedürftig, Aber nach wie vor ein schönes Evergreen das man immer wieder spielen kann. Jetzt kann man wieder Nächtelang durchsuchten oh ich freu mich so drauf. Gibts ja heute leider kaum noch Spiele die so fesseln können :( schade eigendlich

I don't know how my uncle came by this beautiful, underrated gem of a game when I was a kid but I played the hell out of it and loved it. I always come back to it every couple of years because there really is no other game like it. It really needs to be remastered.

This game is was released in 2000, it is 21 years old and is still one of the best magic based games out there. The voice acting is spectacular, the story is pretty simple to follow yet interesting enough to keep you invested and the combat is challenging yet very fun to get into.

The one issue i have is the camera, especially at high cliffs and mountains, you can barely see anything when your walking up or descending down a mountain.

9/10. Amazing game, a god send from the developers

Sacrifice itself is one of the best and most creative games ever made.

However, it doesn't even start on Windows 10 with a 30 series Nvidia card. Spent 2 hours trying out different community guides and fixes, but nothing seems to work.

Out of desperation, I decided to give the GOG version a chance and voila! It works without issues.

So yeah, looks like the Steam version of Sacrifice is broken beyond repair.

Underrated third person RTS-game with a twist... if a third person RTS-game wouldn't be a twist already!

One must appreciate this weird concept. The game is short yet elegant. There are a few mistakes in the difficulty and gameplay balance... but overall, I can only praise this jewel which must have originated from a disturbed yet brilliant team of creators.

This game is a work of high art, the greatest artstyle NA.
Gr8 strategy game too once you pay the sacrifice (hue) of installing patches and dgvoodoo2 to get running on modern machines widescreen at high resolution which really isnt much work.

Introduction

Sacrifice is set in a dimension where the gods fight one another over the power of all the realms. They are all equal in terms of power and influence and squabble with one another while making secret alliances and betrayals. You, the archon, will help tip the balance in their favor – depending on who you choose – in this real-time strategy with RPG elements.

The Narrative

The story begins with you being an archon, an odd-looking fellow that can harness the powers of magic and summon life from your fingertips. You wake up in a dimension where you see five gods squabble and toil over one another. They’re evenly matched, even with their alliances. At first, you’re testing the waters to see who they are and how they align with yourself. Are you a good archon, maybe an evil one? How about a neutral one? Maybe you’re into life or death aspects; either way, they all hold some sway in terms of how you want to represent the god you’re fighting for later on in the story.

Their personalities are rather bland at times and I couldn’t connect with any of the gods on an individual level. They were more about you finishing a set goal than conversating about why they hate each other so much. What was their reason or why? I don’t know. They would tell me to go to this realm to destroy this person’s stuff and make them that much stronger.

The Gameplay

The way this game represents an RTS is rather unique. You don’t have your typical buildings in terms of a command center, barracks to spawn units, or defense structures to help protect your base. You obtain more units is to find souls on the ground or kill your enemies’ soldiers and convert their souls to your soul pool. This soul pool, similar to that of a health or mana pool, helps you keep track of your progression. With stronger units, the more souls it requires to summon them and the fewer units you can summon. I found this idea to be unique, whereas, in typical RTS games you would spam units, here you’d have to decide which comrades you want to summon and how to engage with that platoon.

Units are all unique based on the alignment you choose to work for. You’ll have these odd creatures called manahoars that help replenish your mana, ranged minions, and ones that fly and spew out their stomach acid at their victims. Similar to the Battlecruisers in StarCraft, large units will be a defining factor during the later stages of the campaign. You also summon buildings. There are only a few, but they do help you in your endeavors. Such buildings include health, mana, and teleport shrines. I did enjoy the teleport shrine as it’s a form of fast travel on the larger maps.

In the later stages of the campaigns, only certain objectives will end the missions, but when playing custom games there is a general win/lose playstyle. It tends to be a simple objective: protect your altar. If it dies then, you lose the game; the same is applied to the enemy.

As the archon, you’ll be presented in a third-person view. One will have various spells that can heal units, harm them, do AoE damage or even apply CC. These change with whom you serve. My first playthrough was with Persephone the goddess of Life – so a lot of my spells focused healing and crowd control. Mana is an important resource because it’s the only way to summon more units, cast spells, or conjure buildings into your realm. Souls are the second important resource as they help you establish a platoon of units at your disposal.

There are some RPG elements when you play as the archon. Killing units will earn XP that will advance your levels. They will help you gain additional spells, troops, and new construction options as you play. In the campaign, you’ll progress through each mission, whereas in the custom matches, they won’t be blocked behind progression.

The Auditory

Despite being a 2000 title, this has voice-overs. In terms of atmospheric sounds and music, it does enough to get by, but it could be better. The units do say their commands like most RTS titles when moving your units. The sounds are unique too because the sounds are not based on some form of military or fantasy game, so in terms of combat, spells, etc. it does fit the setting.

The Visual Design

The game honestly didn’t age well with time. Most of the resolutions are around 600x800 and 1280x1024. You have options such as Trilinear, triple buffing, etc. No V-sync or AA. I mean, it’s an old game, so don’t expect top-notch graphics or options to make it look out of this world. There are guides out there if you want to run at higher resolutions, but just keep in mind that it may or may not work for you.

The Performance and Functionality

For how old the game is it didn’t receive a lot of tender, love, care over the years either. It’ll run on Windows XP, 7, and 10, at 30 fps. I also could not get Steam to support its HUD inside the game either. I’d assume there is a guide out there as well as some life hacks to make it work, but I wanted to keep the nostalgia of this classic game in its current state.

Being a 2000 title, the AI is rather bland, dull, and even stupid at times compared to modern AI. It’s easy to overcome your enemy with silly strategies that wouldn’t work in most modern games. An example would be making plenty of ranged units and having them fire across the ravine as the enemy looks confused and stands there. The AI will run past you even though you are attacking their units, assaulting their buildings, or trying to finish off their altar.

For a timeless entertainment, it did run fairly well on a modern-ish PC. I didn’t experience any lag, FPS drops (from what I could tell – no FPS counter), screen tearing, sound glitches, or CTDs. A well-made, solid game for how old it is.

The Verdict

A classic title from the early days of PC gaming. I remember this game came with an NVIDIA card that was purchased with it. I enjoyed it back in the day as being a unique RTS RPG that wanted to show off some of the new technology at that time. It was a blast many years ago and even though it didn’t age well to our standards for modern gaming, it’s welcome to my library and hopefully yours. If you’re willing to read some guides to run on modern settings and want to dip into some early PC gaming, I would suggest adding this timepiece to your collection.

I have played Sacrifice on repeat for a little over 15 years. I utterly adore it. There has never been another game that has even come close to this level of imagination, game play and diversity. The quality of this title, now 21 years old, holds a higher standard across the board (except for graphics) than almost all modern rushed, money gouging titles. An absolute must play to get a glimpse as to what the gaming industry used to strive to deliver.

The game does starts randomly when using Windows 10. Sometimes it starts, without sound, and most of the other times it just crashes. Steam should NOT have these games on sale for its users. A total ripoff.

The game is Unique and is as enjoyable as when I first played it 20 years ago. A true Masterpiece!
The voice acting is the best in the business. and with 9 missions per god, 45 single player missions, it has tons of replayability. The more powerful spells are a joy!

A mmo like game without the grind, all story, gameplay, new spells and new creatures between missions and pick a mission as you go type none liner story telling. While the graphics are dated, the art style and gameplay is such that you will most likely forget about it because the whole package is so enthralling. The voice acting is top notch with actual TVmovie actors that make an effort, without cheese. Highly recommend testing this game out. While resolutions are limited to 1600x1200 I didnt have any issues running the game.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#358 out of 572)... it's time for Sacrifice.

Now here's a game I'm oddly nostalgic for: Sacrifice. It's a weird experimental real-time strategy game with a third person perspective, set in a very unique fantasy setting with multiple story paths depending on which god or goddess you swear allegiance to, and the story is generally very compelling. I'm not convinced you'll get much mileage out of Sacrifice without fond memories like mine: this is one of those very early 3D games with exceptionally crude 3D models and extremely low-res textures. It looks like a muddy mess. I still love it, though.

This is one of my favourite video games of all time, up there with alpha centauri.
However I really can not recommend game on steam because this game dose not play well on modern machines and OS, really your best bet is to buy it on GOG, which I am considering doing I got the game on GOG once in the past and refunded it because it had the same at a distance texture layering issues which are a result of W buffering graphics however this game will not launch for me from steam and I am having massive issue that compatibility settings or run as administrator are not resolving in fact setting either of these are not even sticking and roll back every time I try to launch the game.

This thing is nearly 20 years old now. I played it when if first came out and loved it. Still playing it every 2-3 years since then, and have beat it every combination possible. Only takes a few hours, but is a gem of a game.

Another Hidden Gem from Interplay

It really is a mystery what happened to making games like this. What happened to Interplay? They knew talent when they invested in Shiny and even Planet Moon. But none of these studios survived. Why?
As a long time Giants: Citizen Kabuto fan, since 2008 when I first played it on the PS2, there has been some hopes that modern gaming would try to emulate the spirit of these glorious games. Never the less it has not happened, games have become mainstream, catering to the casual, and retarding the genres in a short span of time. Even though games like this are outdated, one can still appreciate the beauty and design in low poly modeling, and colorful textures. In fact this old way of 3D gaming is very aesthetic and more pleasing to the eye at times than the washed out games trying to achieve realism today.
Sacrifice is a unique RTS, if you enjoyed Giants, even though it was made by Planet Moon, there are many mechanics in here that most likely inspired Giants or was incorporated. For one, the overall gameplay is free, non-linear, there is no specific order mostly on how you want to accomplish each mission. Once you get the hang of the game's unique mechanics, it's smooth, a blast of fun, and can be very satisfying when you defeat a deity after some time. The A.I is not perfect, but it does not get in your way of completing actions.
The variety of formations you can command your beast is the best part. Skirmish, line, semi-circle, circle, phalanx, etc. You can be the most organized commander and conquer with ruthless precision. Or you can be a mad god and just bombard your enemy with large mass of monsters. The choices are not infinite but nonetheless have a lengthy range of fun combinations. Player spells range from one target attacks to large massive attacks that even effect the environment. For example, the bore attack draws a large circular path around the area you select. If you activate this spell with enemies in it, the ground falls underneath their feet and they fall to their deaths. There are funny spells like the Bovine, which your wizard summons a large cow from the earth, launches it into the sky, and like a dive boarder, the cow plunges toward your targeted enemy making it a one shot kill. The name of the game is, you and an enemy wizard fight to banish eachother from the realm. To do this, you must dominate key points (manaliths) to sustain your mana as you travel through the territory. To defeat your opponent you must go to his 'Altar' and sacrifice one of your own monsters. This is the end game.
The graphics are very good for the time of 2000, especially on a modern system in full HD. Unless your one of these graphic junkies who think everything should look real enough to the hair follicles on a guy's scrotum, the imagery is fun, pleasing, and memorable. The designs of the God's you work for are unique, especially Strato's and James, who is obviously a reference to Shiny's character Earth Worm Jim.
The story is simple, the interesting function which attributes greatly to replayability is choosing which God to fight for. There are five gods, the good: James and Persophone. The Neutral: Stratos. The Evil: Pyro and Charnel. I played Jame's campaign first because according to one walkthrough it is good for beginners. At first I didn't really grasp the mechanics and the enemy A.I. I kept getting decimated by Ambassador Buta, that A.I kept me pinned down at my altar, I just couldn't get past him. After trial and error I finally got my hands around the game's process. There is a short learning curve, but once you understand it, it is worth it. The rewards through progression are cooler spells, better monsters, and my favorite combinations are the Boulderdash, Rhinok, and Icarus. This combination is total decimation on the enemy and it is FUN.
That's not all, the soundtrack and voice acting is SUPERB. Tim Curry's voice as Stratos is just mesmerizing, Brad Garett as James is a perfect fit, and Tony Jay as Mithras. There are many more great voices too. The soundtrack, just like Giants:Citizen Kabuto is majestic, dream-like, and dark when it wants to be. It's not a large soundtrack but it is full of quality music to enjoy as you immerse in the monstrous chaos and war.
I highly recommend this game, it is good even to today. It is just another example of gameplay conquering graphics. If you are someone who is into modern games, but have a feeling that maybe your missing something. Go back to the oldies once in a while, and give this game a go!

Definitely a solid attempt at a 3rd person RTS for its time. I played this game forever while growing up and always go back when feeling nostalgic. Gives a good challenge and varying character choices depending on the dieties you choose to serve.

Totally unique and fascinating game with a lot of interesting ideas. Kind of ahead of it's time in certain respects, it's got some aspects which became crystalized into the MOBA genre later - but don't let that put you off. Fantastic and fun little strategy game with a really unique art style. Recommended to strategy fans and RPG fans for its interesting story.

Game worked for a while and then randomly stopped working all together. Tried on several different computers as well so i know its not an issue with that. Havent been able to get any feedback from this as well. Amazing classic game but not worth buying if its not guaranteed to work.

and a game that passes the test of time!

+ great map editor (including the whole single player campaign)

- combat without much depht (still lots of fun though)

this game is on my all time favorite list, and i can highly recommend it!
