They Are Billions is a strategy game in a distant future about building and managing human colonies after a zombie apocalypse destroyed almost all of human kind. Now there are only a few thousand humans left alive that must struggle to survive under the threat of the infection. Billions of infected roam around the world in massive swarms seeking the last living human colonies.

Survival Mode - Available Now!

In this mode, a random world is generated with its own events, weather, geography, and infected population. You must build a successful colony that must survive for a specific period of time against the swarms of infected. It is a fast and ultra addictive game mode. We plan to release a challenge of the week where all players must play the same random map. The best scores will be published in a leaderboard.

Real Time with Pause

This is a real-time strategy game, but don?t get too nervous. You can pause the action to take the best strategic and tactical decisions.
In Pause Mode, you can place structures to build, give orders to your army, or consult all of the game?s information.
This game is all about strategy, not player performance or the player?s skill to memorize and quickly execute dozens of key commands. Pause the game and take all the time you need!

Build your Colony

Build dwellings and acquire food for the colonists. They will come to live and work for the colony.
Collect resources from the environment using various building structures. Upgrade buildings to make them more efficient.
Expand the energy distribution of the colony by placing Tesla Towers and build mills and power plants to feed the energy to your buildings.
Build walls, gates, towers, and structures to watch the surroundings. Don?t let the infected take over the colony!

Build an Army

What kind of people would want to combat the infected?
Only the maddest ones. Train and contract mercenaries to protect the colony. They demand their money and food, and you will have to listen to their awful comments, but these tormented heroes will be your best weapon to destroy the infected.
Every unit is unique and has their own skills and personality ? discover them!

Thousands of Units on Screen

Yes! They are billions! The world is full of infected creatures? they roam, smell, and listen. Every one of them has their own AI. Make noise and they will come ? kill some of them to access an oil deposit and hundred of them will come to investigate.
We have created our custom engine to handle hordes of thousands of the infected, up to 20,000 units in real time.
Do you think your colony is safe? Wait for the swarms of thousands of infected that are roaming the world. Sometimes your colony is in their path!

Prevent the Infection

If just one of the infected breaks into a building, all the colonies and workers inside will become infected. The infected workers will then run rabid to infect more buildings. Infections must be eradicated from the beginning, otherwise, it will grow exponentially becoming impossible to contain.

Beautiful 4K Graphics!

Prepare to enjoy these ultra high definition graphics. Our artists have created tons of art pieces: Beautiful buildings with their own animations, thousands of frames of animation to get the smoothest movements and everything with a crazy Steampunk and Victorian style!

Future Game Mode - Campaign

In the campaign mode, you have to help the surviving humans to reconquer their country. There are dozens of missions with different goals: building colonies, tactical missions, rescue missions... You can decide the path of progress and mission - research new technologies, advances and upgrades to improve your colonies and army. We are working right now on the campaign and we expect it will be available for Winter 2018. The campaign will be included for free to all the buyers of the Steam Early Access version.">

Positiv:

Klare Kaufempfehlung-
Preis/Leistung top!!

The Dark Souls of strategy games. Hard, unforgiving and punishing, but also motivating as hell. You will die. Often. And you will rage quit. Even more. You will love and hate this game. Buy it! You will regret it. :D

Kurz und knapp

Positiv:

+wirklich große Massen an Zombies
+gutes Survival-Feeling
+hartes und gnadenloses Spielsystem
+Pausenfunktion für Taktiker
+ gute Zoomstufen der Kamera
+Wochenmissionen
+verschiedene Schwierigkeitsstufen
+Mod und Map Workshop
+Steampunk Szenario
+hübscher Cel Shading Look

Contra:
-Kampagne langweilige Missionen und triste Story (künstlich in die länge gezogen)
-Einheiten- und Gegnervielfalt könnte höher sein
-kein Multiplayer
-Wegfindung zickt oft bei vielen Einheiten
-kein ordentliches Tutorial
-wenige Verteidigungsgebäude
-Forschung auch öde

Trotz der vielen Kontra's empfehle ich They are Billions trotzdem, da es nicht viele gute Survival-RTS gibt und es dank seiner Atmosphäre und gut verzahnten Spielmechanik echt launig ist.

Daumen hoch!

For 50 days I prepared my walls and troops. Layers of fortifications and turrets. Constant troop rotations to ensure veterancy of all units.
The predicted hoard arrived, a literal wave. The layers of traps, I spent weeks preparing, lasted moments against the pressure of rotting flesh. My wall lasted a few more moments before the hoard exploded into my first line, like water into a submarine. An orderly retreat behind my second line saved the majority of my force.

It was not enough...

Successive retreats and mounting losses. At the final line of defense the last of my troops held. The tidal wave of flesh showed no end. I used the last of my taxed resources to hastily construct one final wall around the command center. Sacrificing half of my remaining army as a rear guard, I sent the elite core into this final layer of fortification.

It was just enough...

The rear guard held nobly. Each taking dozens of the fallen with them, before they succumbed and fell themselves. They had bought all of the time possible. The last elites, backs touching the command center, held the line. As sections of wall fell, so did they begin to fall. Twenty-five became fifteen and at last the wave came to an end.

This game is excellent. I have never had such close victories in an RTS as I have in this one. I sincerely hope that Numantian Games capitalizes on this success.

The random generated maps on single scenario missions are excellent. I can finally rate and recommend the game with the single player campaign, adding lore and world building. This game can definitely be nerve racking, tense racing against time to build up defenses. A definite recommend especially with really lacking choices for rts games.

Great concept but lacking in features and play-ability. Lack of proper save management makes this game a slog trying to actually enjoy the mid to late game. Campaign is terribly balanced and the Hero missions are a slog as well.

Maybe with time modders can fix this but that seems unlikely as the devs seem to be very anti-mods

A very tedious game that causes a lot of restarts. The only problem with that is that the early game is insanely boring. Like its exactly the same every time. Its not even difficult the only difficulty is actually getting through playing it. Kinda like biting into something crunchy in a soft food extremely unpleasant but not difficult.

Game is fun, but the anti piracy check is wonky and keeps triggering for me. Zombies randomly appear in the middle of my base despite this being a legitimate copy purchased on Steam and me having never pirated the game to begin with. The dev or community manager or whatever simply copy/pastes the same fix in the bug forums and locks the post. Game should be fun but is completely unplayable if you are unlucky for some reason and there is no help.

Listen - obviously, I like this game. Obviously, I've played it a lot. I've beaten the campaign on all the various difficulties multiple times, I've played all the heroes, I've worked my way up all the various parts of the tech tree. This game is a blast.

So why am I not recommending it?

Simply put, the game is guilty of the cardinal sin of punishing the player for experimenting. And it's not a good type of punishment, like a Souls game. It's a bad type of punishment - making you re-play hours upon hours of gameplay if your experimentation doesn't pan out.

If you want to explore all the heroes and techs, the game will punish you for it. If you want to try a new strategy, the game will punish you for it. If you have the GALL to take one step outside of the meta and try something new, the game will punish you severely for it.

Did a certain tech on the tree look interesting? Well, too bad, turns out you actually literally can't beat this specific mission if you choose that tech over another tech, so you have to restart a campaign you've already put 20-30 hours into in order to choose the other tech.

Did you want to play a certain hero? Well, too bad, turns out this hero is actually incapable of beating certain hero missions on harder difficulty settings, so you have to restart a campaign you've already put 20-30 hours into using a different hero.

This game is as enjoyable as it is frustrating. It is as unique as it is obnoxious. It has as many terribly-designed elements as it does brilliantly-design elements. I hate it as much as I love it.

This game can swallow weeks of your life, it can be very rewarding and very enjoyable... but honestly, in hindsight, after the hundreds of hours I've put into this game, the most potent feelings I remember are annoyance and frustration, caused by having to re-do entire missions dozens of times just because I dared to try something non-meta.

I play games for fun, not to become an RTS master. I play for fun FIRST. I cannot have fun if a random mistake causes me to lose 1 to 3 hours of a game. The developers have a one-save rule: You cannot make backup saves of an in-progress mission; if you randomly lose because a SINGLE ZOMBIE gets through, you lose 2 hours of your LIFE. This could EASILY be fixed if I could make intermittent saves of a game, but the developers refuse to do so.

I want to like this game. I really do. It's a great concept that is executed well enough. However, I cannot properly learn the game because of the one-save rule. I play to have FUN FIRST, and becoming an RTS master is later, if ever. I don't care about leaderboards, I care about having fun. I want to have fun, but I can't do that if I lose 2 hours of my life because the game does not let me make intermittent saves. Compare this to Frostpunk, which has RTS elements: you can make intermittent saves, and there's a difficulty option that enforces the one-save rule. Note that for Frostpunk, the one-save rule is OPTIONAL. Here the one-save rule is REQUIRED, and that kills the fun for me.

It's alright. Fun base building but it's one of those games like Frostpunk where you have to meta tryhard 100% of the time. Any mistake at any point in the game insta-erases hours of progress which pretty much kills any motivation to play more than a few times, especially because you only get one save slot and iron man isn't even an option but mandatory. Get it on sale.

The game play in this game is pretty fun. I like the art and most elements of the gameplay, though some of the UI prompts and tooltips could be better.

Ultimately, I can't recommend it because the game has no manual save function. It's forced Iron Man mode, so you can play a map for 90 mins, make a single mistake, or just get unlucky, and next thing you know you're totally overrun by snowballing zombie infections in your base. Your only choice is to start the map over from scratch. Even on low difficulties, it's really easy to be caught by surprise and lose an afternoon worth of progress.

Also the way the tech-tree forces you to make choices between missions that you can't take back once you complete a level with them means if you waste your finite research points on options that don't scale for the later game, you have to start the whole campaign over to correct your mistake.

Why have a difficulty setting option, but no option to play with Iron Man mode off? I have no patience for games that waste my time.

Explore, Exterminate, Expand, and Exploit (^_~) the map as fast as possible because THEY ARE COMING!! All while running a city-builder that balances food, energy, workers, and economy. Want soldiers? Well, you'd better be optimal enough to have surplus food and cash for them.

The contagion nature of zombies spices up the tower-defense RTS gameplay by making a glass-wall style of defense extremely failure-prone. If one zombie gets in and hits something fragile... well now you have 4 zombies hitting fragile stuff and so on until that soft exposed base-belly is completely overrun with rot.

You'd better master building a compartmentalized base with multiple fall-back positions. And wow are you gonna need them because this game does a great job of making it feel like THEY ARE BILLIONS.

(Can you tell I freaking love this game?)

Pretty unforgiving because there is no save&load when you make an error.
Means you'll be playing a match for 30,60,90 minutes and then a tiny mistake and you'll lose 1! building and your base will be overrun because you can't stop it.
Half my playtime is 're-playing' the same mission. Especially annoying in the campaign where you get 10% less reward for every time you fail.
The game looks and sounds good.
But it's super stressful and this starting over again all the time is ruining the fun for me.
Good game, just not for me.

I love this game, but the campaign is crippled by the forced iron man mode for single missions. One small mistake - no going back, restart the whole mission. I want to play the campaign, but I don't have time to restart it over and over again. Wish this game was accessible for all types of players. Sadly - no.

I'd love to like this game, but there's just too many issues that make me not want to play it ever again. As some of the other negative reviews of this game mention, the save system is really bad: if you make an early mistake on a campiagn level like building towards the wrong direction (where the final wave will be coming from), you can basically be stuck in a nigh unwinnable position. You're simply done, but the feedback of your mistake only comes after investing a frankly crazy amount of time.

The campaign in general is just.. disappointing? If you expect good progression with fun missions, this is not the place. The maps do not feel that unique, and having played some of the standard mode before the campaign came out, you can again almost softlock yourself by not getting the right buildings or upgrades unlocked. For a first time player, you don't know what is good or bad. Or, of course, you turn down the difficulty after realising your mistake an hour or two in.

Again, I'd really like to love this game. The concept is great, art style is nice, but it's just not accommodating for anyone except the people who have 8+ hours in a day to spend perfecting a level. For someone like me, that's just not worth the investment.

Im going to keep playing but what the hell.... I love playing for two hours just to lose to the final wave and OH TIME TO PLAY THE WHOLE FREAKING MISSION AGAIN... I seriously am sick of wasting so much time on this I love the concept but the inability to save or load the last save state is so stupid when the missions take so long... Seriously two hours to die to the last wave and guess what time to play the same exact map for two more hours!!!!!!

Zombies show no mercy. You mess up once and it's GG. This is the way it should be. I do see that the progression is a bit too slow in the story. I thought I would have more than 2 combat units to pick from by now.

Be extra careful not to accidentally highlight all structures and delete them, that's ruined a handful of my games. There is a warning, but I quickly go and hit confirm without thinking for some reason.

Good :
- The thrill of making sure not one zombie getting leaked inside the base
- Building layered defense that decimate thousands of zombie feels very satisfying
- Game is very challenging, but the pause feature allow you to play the game slowly while thinking what to do next
- The ultimate micro-manager game

Bad :
- Adventure mode where you control a single hero in campaign sucks

Not very well thought out. Devs think it's fun to throw unexpected events at you that wipe you. That in itself isn't so bad. My problem with it is that you then are expected to start over from hours ago with nothing to say for it other than you know it's coming. This is stupid game design. Not bad, stupid.

Does a good job scratching my base building, zombie survival itch. I just wish the easier difficulties were a bit more forgiving. Especially given that certain technologies seem to be essential to winning, so if you pick incorrectly, you basically have to start over since you also can't respec what you research.

The game is extremely difficult, which isn't a bad thing on its own, but it makes the campaign an absolute chore to play. You will spend three hours on a mission, make no mistakes, then you slip up and a single zombie will come and sneak through your defenses. Oh well, you just reload a save right? No, this game intentionally prevents you from reverting to past saves. The lack of an in mission save system really makes the campaign feel extremely, extremely tedious. I've replayed the same missions as many as 10 or more times. And the missions are exactly the same each time, so you just replicate exactly what you did the first time for three hours, and then change what caused the mistake the first time. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've spent 20+ hours a piece on multiple different missions that each would normally take only 2 or so hours to beat. But there is no room for error, if one zombie sneaks through it can snowball and your whole colony is dead. And then you are left with no choice but to restart, and likely spend hours doing exactly the same thing you did the last time, just with a difference at the end to try to avoid your mistake. I did really enjoy the gameplay of the game itself, and as a game it has a lot of good qualities, but the difficulty, mixed with the inability to save, mixed with how a single tiny mistake in this game makes you lose, makes it purely an exercise in frustration and a game you should ABSOLUTELY avoid. This really just makes it worse, because it has the potential of being an enjoyable game, but it just completely and utterly misses the mark due to having to replay the same content over and over with no room for error. I don't really write reviews for games, but this one was so anger inducing, and the game had such potential that went wasted because of a single dumb decision by the developers, that I chose to submit a review. Just avoid this game unless you are a masochist who enjoys replaying the same 2+ hour scenario over and over and over again. Honestly it breaks my heart, because this game had a lot of potential to be awesome, but this honestly single-handedly kills everything good about it. Please don't make the mistake I did, avoid this game. It just leads to frustration.

Perfect frustrations and tensions vs AI. Unforgiving gameplay with playercontrolled difficulty settings makes up the foundation of this RTS Hordemode towerdefense basebuilder game. With a steampunk theme in a dystopian future, its your task to save and protect humanity from the evergrowing attacking hordes that will overrun your settlement unless you set up the proper defenses. Plan accordingly. Harvest resources, build your base and attack with your army to clear out new areas of the map to be able to expand your population and production - like most other RTS. Only here: a single stray enemy will wreck your entire hometown. No saves allowed, its ironman as default

Holy eff.. that sounds like a commercial text. - But really. Casual and hardcore lovers of RTS will be able to find a challenge. How challenging is up to you. But you will reach frustration levels of ragequits due to the unforgiving nature of this game. And you will love it for hitting that feeling

This game is punishing, and the fun for the difficulty is not present. I want to like this game, but I find I spend an hour building up a base only to lose because my units path-finding is so awful it disables half of them. When I do win it feels hollow because my losses are stupid and so a win feels trivial.

Game is pretty fun and addictive considering it is one of the few tower-defense type games available but after you put in 5 or 10 hours its boring and repetitive. The game itself has a learning curve and unforgiving gameplay where you cannot load a specific save or even reset, but instead 3 hours of effort can be erased by one zombie wave. As well on easiest mode you can have the perfect setup and still fail because of the games aggressive Ai.

2 years after release and only 10% off with 0 updates should be enough to warn you of a company who just wants money without added work with improvements.

Its maybe a 15$ game full price

I love this game. I absolutely adore it.

It reminds me so much of classic RTS games like StarCraft or Age of Empires with it's art style, tech tree, building and resource mechanics. I have been looking for a good RTS in this classic style for so long, and here I finally found it. This style of game play is so rare these days that it is frankly a major selling point for me. The only difference with this game is that it's all about the base building rather than defeating another player. So, if you are like me and loved turtling in these kinds of games, then this one is for you.

The learning curve is not steep at all, practically non-existent, yet the game still presents a challenge. Your job in most missions is to build a base and slowly expand it as you clear the map of zombies. As you grow your base into a town, you can research more buildings and units to use. As you are doing this, there are occasional waves of zombies that come from one or more directions and you must make sure you have enough defenses set up so that they can't break in and infect your buildings. Walls are an absolute must, and balancing your resources between defenses and building a town/army is key. And a hint to those who have trouble with keeping all the holes in their defenses plugged -- use natural chokepoints to your advantage. Don't build massive walls over large areas of free space that could be better used for houses or food, and clean up after yourself when you do. Don't expand heavily in an area until you've cleared it out to it's chokepoints.

I've seen some reviews where people really dislike how difficult this game is. To them I say get good. Yes, the game is in perpetual Iron Man mode. Yes, it would be a lot better with checkpoints or manual saves. However, it is not THAT hard. The recommended (default) difficulty presented me with quite a challenge at first, but as I learned the mechanics and came up with good techniques for keeping the zombies at bay, it felt like just the right amount of difficulty. Most missions I never failed, some I failed once or twice.

I will, however, complain about the missions where you run around with your hero. In my opinion, they were a slog. Very slow moving, unforgiving, and at times frustrating. The only reason I did them is because I wanted the tech points so I could get more useful stuff in the main missions. Otherwise I would have avoided them entirely. To be fair though, these missions also take inspiration from classic games like StarCraft.

All in all, I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves classic RTS games and loves turtling/base building. I can't wait until another game in this style comes out. Good job devs, be proud of what you've made here.

The tactical missions are frustrating to find everything. A lot of my time seems to be playing where's waldo with the items. I had a gamebreaking bug where my research keep resetting then going to zero permantly after the third mission. Seems to happen a lot based on Google. You have to redownload and start a new campaign.

I wish there was a neutral review button cause the RTS concept is great.

This game some very-very good potential, but issues with bad pathfinding, bugs, not having an ability to increase game speed, not having an ability to reset level. Awful, no, AWFUL save system. Fix all this stuff and the game would be a gem. Also, very, very seldom updates from the devs. Why do you abandon your game, while it still has so many things to fix??? All these bad things makes the game feel like a BS and a waste of money. Also, the game is EXTREMELY overpriced for all the issues it has. DON'T BUY, don't support such developers.

Devs, you think the game needs to be difficult, therefore no saves? BS, give us a right to choose! Not everyone likes to play Ironman. People play games to have fun, not frustration. And fix all the bugs you game has.

I love this game, the difficulty is punishing and it enjoys smashing your face into the dirt. A single oversight can wipe out a 2 hour game in an instant. It's savage and I love it. The art is also fantastic, the controls are tight and everything is streamlined. It's repetitive but that's kind of the point, it's an advanced turtle/tech rush RTS game.

If you don't enjoy getting wrecked, then this game is not for you.

I've played this game for so long, now, over 50 hours I believe, and I will have to simply say, I do not recommend buying this game. There is a huge number of issues with the game design and a number of balancing as well as unit issues but I'll get into those after.

The Reason I Bought The Game:
I bought the game because I loved the idea of a RTS game where you build up a base and defend against swarms of zombies but all I can say is that as exciting as the concept is, this game just simply doesn't deliver what I was expecting. It goes from exciting to a boring grind and, for others I'm sure, a rage-inducing experience instead.

The Reason Why I'm Dropping It:
I'll go into the specific problems after this but I just wanted to say why I've decided to drop this game, now. I've nearly completed the entire main campaign but I just cannot bring myself to continue. As much as I want the feeling of, finally, beating this game, it just isn't worth the patience I'll have to sacrifice to get there. Everything is so repetitive, boring and punishes you so severely, regardless of the difficulty setting you select. Wish I could get a refund but I doubt it's possible, at this point, so I'll simply warn others before I forget about this game.

The Main Problems I've Encountered:
- Let's start light. The videos and story are bare bones. It's not anything outstanding and after you complete something like 10 maps, you'll get one 15 second clip of the emperor, basically, giving you a thumbs up and a pat on the head. It doesn't feel that rewarding and the end of each mission is just a quick pop up screen, so there really isn't any build up or hype between, at the start and the end of missions. I mean, the developers have clearly hired voice actors for some of the characters, so how hard would it have been to have made a story around the units you start with at the beginning of each map with them speaking or saying something at the start and end of each mission? Age Of Empires did that all the time and not necessarily with just hero characters but giving voices to regular units to make scenes feel alive.

- The grind is horrible. The games are so long and time-consuming, hence my 50 hours of game-play. There are three game types and only one of them I didn't think was a bad idea, which was the defend your outpost game type. Once you saved up enough imperial points or whatever, you could really enjoy yourself with those missions. The second game type is where your hero unit, which only appears in these missions for some dumb reason since they would be cooler in the main missions too, explores a map alone and collects items that reward you with points that can be used in the tech tree. Not sure who thought it would be a great idea if the items were absurdly tiny, difficult to find and an, overall, frustrating experience. Who thinks 'let me spend an hour looking for a tiny bottle in this map I cleared ages ago' is a fun game mechanic? The last game type is the main one, which is the most grindy. Whereas the outpost is fun since you just get to deal with a cool swarm and the hero missions suck, the main missions are the worst culprits. They have so many issues, I'll split them up below.

- The first issue with the main missions is the inability to save and load. I don't care what kind of professionals the developers believe they are but it's a stupid idea. No main-stream or decent RTS takes this basic mechanic out. The reason being the grind, you absolute fools. The developers clearly thought that if people couldn't load save games prior to a single zombie entering a player's base, people would think their game is 'hardcore' and only for 'alpha top-tier super gamers'. No, it's for idiots that think they're superior for enduring and perfecting the skills necessary to not die once in missions they've done before. Saving and loading allows players not to have to repeat the boring stuff they've done before. The games are super slow and if one mistake loses me the game, the game decides I have to repeat every single action up to that point again. Why? I understand it's to 'punish' the player but it's a pitiful way of doing so because why would anyone want to do all that boring stuff again, just to get to that one exciting swarm at the end? It was a idiotic idea from the developers and, should they ever make another game like this, I hope they don't try something like this because they want to be the Dark Souls wannabies of RTS games.

- This goes further on the previous point but the difficulty is literally a complete mess in this game. The clips and the like that you see advertised is a falsehood. The game doesn't advertise itself as super difficult but it makes it that way with its sloppy mechanics, regardless which of the 8, for some heckin reason, difficulties you choose from. Even on the easiest settings, you're going to have a tough time if you're the least bit careless. You constantly have to have your guard up and combined with the stupid lack of a loading and saving option, makes it a big deterrent that anyone that simply wants to play this game casually. If you are a casual player that wanted to play a simple zombie killing base-building game, do not play this. It disguises itself as something made for everyone but doesn't showcase how the developers want to make it super difficult, regardless of the type of player you are, and defend their sloppily made game with a dedicated fanbase of people that defend their comment deleting and the difficulty of their game since they clearly like playing the same mission a billion times over.

- There is a 'you died haha'/death counter displayed at the end of each mission you lose. It doesn't affect your tech tree point accumulation or any other aspects of the game but it's a snide way the developers try to make you restart the campaign from scratch, just so you can earn more 'victory points' for them to give you a pat on the head and a steam achievement based on how many you get by the end of the game. Getting near to the final wave and having a single zombie trigger the destruction of your entire base, losing you the mission that took you over two hours to complete and being told you have to restart everything and do everything the exact same way except for having a soldier in the place to defeat that one zombie is insane. What makes it worse, however, is the smug 'death counter' that greets you over the fact that a single zombie, even on easiest difficulty, can ruin an entire two hour game and force you to restart. If you hid it away, I wouldn't mind but the 'victory points' is how they lure gullible hardcore fans into using it as a way to boast of their imaginary superiority over each other and to aid them in defending the game's absurd difficulty and balancing.

(By this point, I'm just so sick of the nonsense in this game. I'm going to streamline the other problems and be on my merry old way to something more promising. Maybe check out 'Endzone' or something better than this.)

- You don't have a clue what zombies or how many zombies are coming in swarms, which means you have to stress over them unnecessarily or underestimate them.
- You're locked between playing like a turtle or expanding rapidly and praying you don't let a single zombie slip you up.
- Games are timed and allow you to pause the game but refuse to let you speed them up.
- Tech tree choices are irreversible, so you're either a good tactician, lucky or get screwed over by a selection of bad choices since you didn't read some obnoxious game guide for a game that shouldn't require one!
- Every game is the same with a very slightly different objective.
- Finally, having to reach a set population amount is stupid and it is clearly only put into place to force people to spam the same building over a map they've already finished, just to meet the criteria to actually win.

Overall, just don't buy this game.

First of all, this game is ridiculously hard, and has almost no reward when you get where you want to go, most people play endless, but even that is just frustrating.

Secondly, the story is abysmal, it contains so many boring, impossible levels that just aren't worth your time.

Lastly the devs are snobs.

Would be a good game if it allowed you to save when you want. Easy solution would be to have ironman mode and normal mode where you can save when you want. The devs and moderators get bad attitudes when this issue is brought up in the forums. As such, I can't recommend this game.

Pick up only if you are looking for a hardcore experience. I want to like the game but I've found the lack of basic save functionality too frustrating to recommend. The very nature of the game means you could waste a ton of time before you find out you are actually losing or set yourself up to lose several missions ago. You don't have the APM of Korean Starcraft god to beat the game though and you can also pause to think.

Players can not save or load games as they are bound to an Ironman mode with no option to play your own way. There are difficulty settings if you are struggling but you will probably only find this out at the very end of a mission when the swarm hits and you didn't quite prepare well enough leading to a restart anyways. Plus there is an added penalty that increases each time you have to redo a mission as opposed to rogue-lites that tend to offer improvements. You also need to be very careful with what techs you choose in campaign as a few wrong choices in between missions could be fatal for the next mission. These points would have been great as a diminishing reward for redoing missions instead of the current penalties.

I've also had issues with the game crashing frequently in campaign mode which does not mix well with the above as the game does not autosave frequently enough. I guess it can be seen as a plus if you want to cheese it by force-crashing the game when you find yourself in a losing situation. Or they could add the functionality to save/load so players can decide themselves how they want to play.

The anti-piracy feature will ruin your games by making the game unwinnable.

Has happened to players who never pirated.

Would have loved to give this a thumbs up but with a terrible Warning/Alert system that doesnt tell you about the 1 zombie running loose that ends your 1 hour game and with no saves you just waste your time 75% of the time.

The other 25% youll find a fun game of the genre but the issues above will just leave you thinking i could have been doing something else.

Pretty great game overall, but for me personally failed to go to distance.

It was great exploring the mechanics of the game but every mission starts to feel reeeaaaal samey. Clear some zombies, put some walls up, expand, resist a wave, - repeat. Northguard suffers the same repetition for different reasons.
The lack of save options is a huge detriment to the game and replay value of the title, you make 1 mistake somewhere and you'll lose the entire settlement, which is fun. I like that, what I don't like is starting the mission over and repeating the same tedious settlement expansion for a mission. Not fun, ever.
The game doesn't benefit enough from random maps and needs more focus. Overall, I had fun with this game. But when I was done. I was done. Don't think I'll be coming back until the next game.

I have played strategies since the 90's and I've become very picky after 20 years. This one is pretty freaking sweet, though. I've played since alpha so don't bother with the hours.
It's a blend of some of my favourite aspects of strategy games: Base building, town management, army production and control and tower defence. It's easy to get into, hard to master and most importantly: fun to play.
The steampunk post-apocalypse theme is original and fresh. The graphics are crispy and the sound is fine, I guess, I'm bad at judging it.
If you have any inclinations towards these types of games you'll sink in hours the moment you start the first game.

No saVE FUNCTION! I was playing on easiest level. Some scenarios can go an hour plus. Guess what, you cannot save the game anywhere, so if you play a scenario an hour and 20min and lose ,you have to start all over from the beginning,. Can you say tedious? I can. I uninstalled the game after 15 hours of play. This game was a waste of money. If you how low to medium patience do not buy this. I raged quit the game. If i see the developer who didnt put the save option in , I will pounce on him. No save feature has to be the dumbest decision even made in a game. I do not care about those ranking boards , the save feature should alWAYS BE in a game and let the user decide if they want to use it. Jeezus H crist what a ripoff this game is without it.

All the negative reviews are people whining about how they lost. This is a hard, unforgiving game, but that is what makes it so much fun. Here are a few beginner tips

1) You can pause the game to think about tricky situations. have some infected about to reach your houses? PAUSE THE GAME, locate all available soldiers, and start building a wall or spike traps in between the horde and your houses. (Note that if the infected are too close to something you can't build there)

2) You can press middle mouse button to make trees and mountains flat so they don't obstruct your view when you are building or looking if there is a gap in them. I saw a 200 hour review complaining about being unable to see gaps in trees. Ignore that.

3) For survival the number of infected and time until the final wave is customisable. start with the fewest infected and longest time to build up when learning the game. For the campaign, you can change the difficulty.

4) You will lose. Don't worry about it. when you lose a game you are a few hours into, don't rage, it happens to everyone. Think about what went wrong, and how you can do better next time.

Unless you're a hard core RTS player and just love the genre, I'd avoid this. Right off the bat, unit pathing is IS bad, I couldn't believe it. You have to micro manage every 10 feet of walking, because the units will just walk into each other, or corners forever, and never get to where you need them to go. I'm not a huge RTS guy, I've played them, and enjoyed them. This one is just rough. The concept and IP are interesting though. I just can't recommend it to everyone.

The fun parts are very fun, but after the 10th time the game asks you to redo 2 hours of playing, it stops being fun fast.
I read the other reviews about the 'no save' approach, I thought it wouldn't bother me, I was wrong.

Please, respect the player's time.

Decided to review this game after seeing that it had a number of negative reviews talking about the same problem. I personally don't think the lack of a mid-game save mechanic is an issue, nor do I think that one should be implemented at all. This game's campaign is incredibly entertaining, and part of the game's appeal for me is its difficulty. The addition of the ability to save mid-game would, in my opinion, pretty much trivialise the campaign. I could understand such a mechanic being present in the quick games/skirmishes that you can do outside of the campaign (though I personally would not use it - part of the charm is getting to see how your colony gets horrifically destroyed!), but in the campaign you could just use it to blaze through the levels, in essence just making it more trial and error. This is just my opinion though!

Anyway, this game is amazing. I'm a sucker for ridiculously large hordes of zombies, and this game so far still hasn't been beaten when it comes to quantity. Getting the loud notification with music to tell you a horde is coming often makes me jump (since the game is otherwise relatively ambient), and then seeing like literally thousands running at your walls is awesome. The game can be very difficult, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're likely to get frustrated at having to repeat levels sometimes, but if you like a challenge then this is a lot of fun. Has a ton of replayability :)

This game is really a mixed bag. At first I liked the idea of clearing the surroundings of the undead and building a colony stronghold. This kind of tower defense/builder RTS is really rare.

It was really hard to decide between positive and negative review. The concept and the core gameplay are really solid and I will definitely come back to play it again. But there are major caveats that really keep this game from being really good.

The first thing you will notice, as many reviews already stated is that you can't save the current mission. This didn't concern me so much until much later, since there are maps in which you have to build a big settlement and defend it against one giant end game wave. This means you basically build for about an hour at least before you get destroyed because you don't posses the ability of clearvoyance. I don't know how many other players are furtune tellers, but I am definitely not.

This brings us directly to the second problem. In the course of the campaign you have to unlock buildings you can build while inside missions via a skill tree. Again you will need visions of the future to guide you, because you can be locked out of critical skills which you only discover while progressing in the game.

This is just misguided game design and turns the game into a really depressing endeavor later on, since the only way to adapt your strategy is to restart the whole game. The sad thing is that this is totally unnecessary since only very slight changes in the game design would have turned this whole thing around. Just allow dynamic customization of the skill tree or let people grind it out via harder difficulties of the earlier stages like a rogue-like.

All in all the flaws really combine into a super flaw which really make you wonder why you just wasted your time with this. Didn't the developers study game psychology at least a bit? Don't make games for masochists. It's a limited target audience. Even Dark Souls started to implement redistribution of attribute points.

Chances are that I will return to this game some day and figure out the skill tree, which like some players pointed out makes the game much more easy. Frustration might turn into reward and I will change this review into positive. But at the moment I just feel treated badly. Developers should respect the time of their players since lifetime is limited and foreseeing the future is not a skill that should be tested by a well thought out game design.

There's a lot to recommend about this game, it plays brilliant, looks good and scales well on high resolution displays, and apart from the odd pathfinding issue it is basically bug free.

But it's lacking one very important feature for someone with limited time to play games; mid-level saves. Without these the game turns from enjoyable to keyboard-thumping frustration as you lose hours of gameplay to a single weakness in your base.

If I had know about this before buying the game I wouldn't have purchased it, by the time I noticed it was too late for a refund. Don't make my mistake.

This game is HARD. I mean, like, really hard. Totally fun though. There is a way to 'save' the game mid-way through a run if you need to - just google it. If not for that, I think i'd put it away (nothing worse than spending 2hours on a game and the last zombie rush surprises you from some wack direction and you lose and have to start over).

Its a basic base building RTS, defend against zombie wave attacks with walls and towers.

This would be a decent game if it was fleshed out more, but as it stands there are only a few unit types on each side.
A big problem is the way the isometric view is setup, its hard to select something behind something else, or even see it. This means you cant delete a wall if a building is in front of it. It also means there could be a little gap in the trees that the zombies can walk through and you can never see it.

A critical element they screwed up is that you cant save and load games as you please, they force you to save and exit, and auto save over your game... this is frustrating for this type of unforgiving game and you end up losing hours of progress because 1 zombie wandered through an invisible gap in the defence.

The tech tree system is decent and so is the artwork.

Lack of a normal save system makes this a lot less enjoyable to play then it could of been. A small mistake can easily snowball until youve lost hours of progress and cant regress to a logical point.

On top of that some of the game modes like the lone hero mode are incredibly bland and dull.

The core game is pretty enjoyable. The campaign is some of the worst game-crafting I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, once you figure out how everything on the (sparse) tech tree works, the game becomes pretty trivial.

This game would work if there were multiple tech trees available that needed to be figured out more or less on the fly to capitalize on the randomly generated resources near your town hall. Adding a bit of a puzzle element to the game.

As it is it's just too simple to hold attention long-term.

I only played the Campaign, and never got around to the skirmish mode

The world the game takes place in is beautiful, and I love the steampunk aesthetic. The games progression system is interesting too, encouraging extremely structured builds, and good macro from even the very beginning. The mechanic to make your buildings become infected hives is also a very nice touch, encouraging you to layer your base, or keep rigid security on your borders. That being said, that's all the good I can say about it. The units are essentially just straight upgrades of eachother, with the best unit being the sniper. Once you unlock the next tier unit and have the resources to make it, there is NO reason to use the previous tier unit. The archers you begin out with are essentially useless by the midgame and soldiers are just tanky snipers. Units are also fairly expensive, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the fact that it takes so damned long to even make the building that allows you to create units. It is nice that units get stronger as they grow in combat experience, but the growth is slow, and by the time they become a 'Veteran', unless they're a sniper, they're useless. Because zombies are able to convert your buildings, you have to keep some units to patrol your base, but you can't get more units until your base has expanded. Expanding your base means clearing out zombie hordes, which will create noise that attracts more zombies. Your base is never in a good position to expand, and will always be under attack from all sides, meaning you're making small excursions outside of your base, while you attempt to defend it as well. A single hut becoming infected essentially ends a run, unless you delete all the other huts immediately. Something the game attempts to stop you from doing, by removing your ability to interact with things near zombies. While it is 'possible' to recover from your base being zombified, chances are it happened during a 'horde', and now you're stuck trying to play catch up with the zombies. You have to rebuild your economy, while the AI continues to pelt you with zombies you don't have the units to deal with. All of this could be solved with simply allowing low tier units to be bought from the command center at the beginning of the game, allowing for more early game aggression, but sadly that isn't an option. Unit pathing is also really bad, so don't be surprised if your guys manage to get themselves killed fighting only a dozen or so zombies. While making no attempt to all get in the proper line of sights.

Incredibly tedious. The premise has promise, but the level design, low building health, unit sight distance. and resource management ruin any fun. You'll have to fail every map at least once so that you'll know which direction has to be fortified first; you won't have resources to fortify everything. Then you'll have to kill the same 100 zombies almost one by one because your units can't see further than 30 feet away. If you miss one, you'll lose and have to restart again.

I enjoy difficulty that requires deep strategy and planning, but this just requires severe attention to detail. And I've never wanted to be an auditor.

I have attached some gameplay video if you are on the fence, going through the start of the game
An apocalyptic steampunk city builder with zombies! Yes I said that right, but overall a great game, which I have wasted hours and hours on (and will waste more)!

The game is hard, even on the easy settling, and there is no real save system. The zombies are great at finding the smallest hole in your defenses (see my video for that) and then your game is over (or you barely survive!)

Pros
If you want a challenge this game is for you
The art style and music are great
Good city building, its really fun to see your city build up and really fun when you have to clear the next area for expanding your base

Cons
Opps one little zombie found your way into your base, game over! This could screw up 3-4 hours of gameplay which you can't go back because of the save feature
The solo missions are meh

First of all, I'm not the one to rage against games - in fact, I rarely say anything about a game I don't like. However, when I first started playing They Are Billions, I was thrilled. Finally a good city builder AND a good tower defender! Sadly, I was baited. Soon enough the solo missions came. They are some of the worst game design I ever saw. It's like the game suddenly believed it was Diablo 3 - and to say that these missions are 1% as fun as Diablo 3 would be an insult. And it's not like you can ignore them and go on your merry way through the campaign - you need them for the TD part of the game that blocks you from continuing your campaign. So, the fact that the game started off really well only made it harder for me, because I literally got homework to do that I didn't like one bit more than filling out an excel table or washing the dishes. It's just a chore (a difficult and poorly performing one) you need to do in order to continue the campaign. You need to move your cursor across every single millimeter of the map to find tiny hidden resources and kill a billion zombies in the least imaginative ways. When I say I was baited, I mean that for the first 10 or 20 hours I believed that this was a certain kind of game I really loved and then it was revealed to be very different - which made it impossible to refund once I learnt this. So, to the developers: listen to your community. We obviously HATE the solo missions and really enjoy the rest of the game. If you absolutely have to keep them, at least keep them optional. Otherwise, I just have to call this product a waste of money and time.

Nice base defense and colony sim, but the challenge comes from the lack of usability and feeling like a crippled commander clicking on everything instead of using your hotkeys, artificially slowing down gameplay elements that make RTS games fun.

If you are coming from an RTS background like SC BW, AoE or C&C this game will be a simplified mess with so many missing features, that it's absurd that a game was released in 2019 without features that 20 year old games had. The UI is very basic with very limited options to customise your experience, and it's funny that the devs thought about using hotkeys for the buildings and unit actions panel, for those little command cards, but when you select a group, for example colony, you actually have to click on the tent, instead of using hotkeys twice, click and there you go, your building is now queued up for building.

What a great way to get carpal tunnel when devs don't think about ergonomics and customisation, maybe there should be a regulation put in place when a game is literally a health risk.

-no camera hotkeys
-no command card hotkeys
-no option to change scroll speeds
-no drag scroll
-units are fine at best, but they feel really off, especially if you compare the micro management to SC2, just don't feel like being in control of the units.
-community instead of pushing the devs they accept the laughable workarounds and carry on.

The game feels like it was made for casuals instead of hardcore RTS players, but the game is actually challenging, so there is a huge contradiction. The real challenge is as you can read above is that there are no proper tools given to deal with the challenge unless you are willing to put your health at risk.

It's like a half-finished RTS that the fanbase accepted for some reason and the devs no longer care about implementing features that ancient RTS titles had, what a joke... Also don't come at me that this is an indie game and they can't implement ancient RTS features, this is pure laziness and lack of understanding how an RTS game is meant to be played.

Better option if you just look for a colony survivor mod/ campaign on SC2's library.

This is easily my favourite RTS of the last decade. The replayability is fantastic with survival mode constantly providing new challenges via randomly generated maps. The campaign is a good starting point for new players as its easy going to begin with but ramps up slowly - the only downside to it is the actual story is a bit lacklustre, verging on non-existent. But that's only a minor complaint as you play 'Billions' for the gameplay. The steam workshop is fantastic too as so many people have created their own custom maps and custom campaigns which just adds to the longevity of the game and constantly provides new challenges. The game is challenging though and you'll curse yourself early on for letting just one sneaky little zombie through which will cause a chain reaction of death. But like all good games based on skills, with every defeat you learn a lesson and improve your game play.

There are things I like and things I dislike about this game.

Pros:
Unique take on a tower defense/rts game
Graphics are nice in an indie kind of way
Fluid unit movement and unit control, same goes for enemies. They never get caught up in each other despite there being hundreds in the same group at once.

Cons:
The campaign is godawful. Like, seriously worst RTS campaign I've ever played. This deserves a few cons against it:
You can literally buy the wrong research tech and end up screwing yourself over for future missions, forcing you to restart from the very beginning. For example, not buying farming/food upgrades won't give you enough food to complete population missions. Not buying military unlocks may make certain missions impossible to progress through.
The developers decided they want you to play Where's Waldo with trying to find important bonus research in tedious hero missions. Essentially you have to click on non-highlighted items against a background of other nonhighlighted items to find these bonus points. A barrel in the background among 10 other barrels may contain research and you'll just have to luckily or tediously move your mouse over it and click on it to pick it up.
So many missions, especially in the beginning require you to reach x amount of population to beat the level. This is not fun, not challenging, and can extend a mission's normal play time of 30-45 minutes to 2 hours. You're literally just waiting to collect enough resources to spam down farms, tesla coils, and tents without even having any zombies on the map after you've cleared them all out.
Then sometimes you finish the main objective and you're just waiting for the zombie swarm to attack without anything else to do. You might be days away from the attack. No way to send it early. You may as well alt-tab and do something else while you wait.
Those are it for my campaign cons. Here's some others.
It's been said before in just about every other criticism, but the forced ironman gameplay for a game that you can lose instantly when a single zombie sneaks into your base (very easy to miss) is very upsetting. Spending 2 hours on a base and then losing it because a zombie just isn't very visible and you didn't see it in time sucks. I would understand making this forced on higher difficulties and a toggle on lower difficulties.
Lack of gameplay options. I can't bind hotkeys to my mouse buttons. Ctrl + 1 makes a control group, but you can't use shift + 1 to add units to that control group, you can only remake it.
Placement of buildings requires them to be non-overlapping in resource collection with other buildings. Instead of the game showing me valid locations I can place my buildings to ensure adequate/efficient spacing, I have to basically visualize the invisible resource collections in my head to try to make my placement efficient. A small QoL fix to this would go a long way.

Overall, it's a fun game, and I'm sure I'll come back to it from time to time, but I have too many issues with this game to recommend it to people, and I don't expect the devs to listen to the players and fix them now if they haven't already after all the other negative reviews.

Chores: The Game.
Build A so you can build B so you can build C so you can build 1000 houses so you can build 10000 units so you can kill 1000000000 zombies. It's kinda fun initially, but gets old really quick. They've dumbed down RTS mechanics way too hard. there's not much of a strategy here.

The developers have mistaken artificial difficulty for challenge, which seems to be their entire development philosophy. This is quite a shame, as there is a fun core game here. However, one can only take so much enforced and needless frustration.

That is all.

No manual save in campaigns is a insane decision to be made. Further it sucks. There is fun in the freestyle mode but overall the developers had something here and they just didn't listen to the community enough top polish it while they had the chance.

I purchased this game during early access and recently installed the full version. I was frustrated to find that there is no in-game save feature.
I've read all the reasons for this decision: the devs insisting that the game is played to their vision etc, but frankly that's just elitist gatekeeping and the fun police defining how to have fun.
As a single player experience, who cares if I save my game? I'm sure a legion of rabid fans will sneer, tell me to 'lern 2 play', and call me a filthy casual. But that kind of behaviour is no different to the toxic gym culture that shames anyone less than perfect.
Yup, I'm a casual gamer. I play to have fun. This game is not fun.

I love the plethora of options available in this game. You can play it using the basic survival maps, or in the Campaign, which are both difficult, and satisfying when you get a win. But you can also play the 1000's of custom maps, which have been created by players. Some of these are extremely creative, and very challenging.
This is game that for me, never gets old, because every game is different, and no matter what mode you are playing, can be very satisfying. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a challenge.

Usually don't post reviews, but having grown up with RTSes this feels like my wheelhouse.

On the face of it, 'They Are Billions' is not a bad game. It's just very, very, very basic. Complexity doesn't really start coming on until a few missions in, which wouldn't be bad if each mission didn't eat up an hour or more of your time with little engagement to keep you hooked. Comparisons to Warcraft 3 aren't without warrant, because that set a very good bar, and in comparison to Warcraft 3 it just falls very, *very* short.

The 'standard' campaign mission involves base building - you have to reach a certain population often, as well as hitting some milestones like gold income, or killing all infected units. The game forces you to expand aggressively to grow at all, and fails to give you a way to produce soldier units at the start - the stone needed isn't even within the range of the starting location, which is just tedious as hell. You also have a pitiful amount of storage to work with at the start, and once you *do* get that stone there's little to spend it on after the Barracks is built. This quickly leads to resource overflow, making it so that when you -want- to use a resource you're highly constrained because you simply cannot stockpile a lot of resources at all. You might think this is strategic, but no, it's just tedious as hell as you wait impatiently for resources to crawl back in so you can finally finish the fricken' wall.

Furthermore, units lack tactical abilities to use. It's very much just a matter of making packs and packs of units and throwing them at the enemy, or putting them on towers along your walls. There's not a whole lot of thinking on your feet involved, it's entirely about laying down walls and towers and then moving the rest of the unit swarm around. Play more of the game, and the flaws with the units become more and more apparent. For example, each unit has it's own speed it moves at, but whereas a game like WC3 would force a selected group of units to all move at the speed of it's slowest unit, They Are Billions does *not*. This means that unit formations are difficult as hell to maintain. Units do not take automatic formations, and move at their speed regardless. This is hell, because it means unless you micromanage your group, your formation will crumble.

This means tactics become tedious to try. For example, early on you will have Rangers and Soldiers. Your Soldiers are very chonky boys, but your Rangers - who are faster - are not. Rangers have a longer range than Soldiers do, and since you'll have Rangers left around from early scouting you'll want to use these units as support units to your Soldiers. Unfortunately, you -cannot- make the faster Rangers slow down and stay behind the Soldiers automatically. If you order the group of Soldiers and Rangers to make an attack move, the Rangers will run ahead of the tankier Soldiers, not only making them highly likely to die but getting in the way of the Soldiers who have shorter attack ranges! This becomes even worse when you get later game units, which are -even slower-, meaning you will constantly be having to micro-manage movement of units so that they stay in formation.

This is frankly unacceptable in an RTS-style game released in 2019... For comparison, in 2004, as their third game Haemimont released Nemesis of the Roman Empire. It too had a focus on huge amounts of units being on the screen, and to manage those huge armies you would take hero units, and attach generic units to them to make squads. These squads would move at the speed of the slowest unit, and remain in a formation which was strategically advantageous, and could be ordered to take up several different formations to take advantage of different unit types. Each unit also had a special quality, role in battle, and each faction had one caster unit with support abilities. These quality of life and innovative features are totally absent in They Are Billions.

Speaking of Hero Units, the Hero unit you select at the beginning of the game *only* appears in a select few exploration missions, and neither of them have any real abilities either outside of being able to find grenades and medkits to use on the maps they appear in. In WC3, maps where you had a small number of units and hero units going through a gauntlet relied on clever and timely usage of heroic abilities, unit positioning, and intelligent use of resources.

In They Are Billions, the hero unit begins *alone* on the map, and only on a few do they pick up any extra units to command along the way. With no special abilities to use, these missions are nothing but an absolutely -miserable- and tedious game of kiting and attrition, with very, very few opportunities to get creative. Early Exploration missions have explosive barrels laying around, but later maps they just... Sort of forget to add them. A few places have environmental hazards to lure zombies through, but the game doesn't have them as *options* to pick from as much as just -requires- you to use them to progress. Some of these maps also just have no sense of restraint, throwing insufferably powerful and deadly obstacles at you which you just have to kite down over like half an hour.

These missions also charge you with finding small collectibles hidden throughout the level to gain Research Points and Prestige - things you definitely -need- in the campaign, which are -not- highlighted or pointed out at all and can be insufferably tiny. You will almost always finish the level without finding them all, making you have to carefully pick over the level, wagging your cursor over every tiny scrap on the map, looking for a sprite that's maybe a tenth of the size of the Hero unit that you can right click on. These are the very worst parts of the game, and I hate them. Use a WeMod trainer to activate god mode, and leave combat on auto-pilot while you do something in the background.

The third type of mission is Swarm missions. There's so little to say here, and they should have just been removed. You start in the middle of the map, you set up defenses and units, and when you're done you start, infected stream in, and if you set up your defenses right they get mulched and the map is over. Again, set up defenses and alt-tab, it's pointless to watch.

All of this is compounded by the rogue-lite element; the lack of deeper gameplay and tactics means that each and every mission is simply an exercise in patience and attrition, and if you lose you have no save state to fall back on. This means that losses don't really encourage you to rethink things to much and the daunting task of slogging back through it all again makes you not want to jump back in. The solution is hardly ever anything to do with tactics, it's everything to do with just build more walls or churn out more units. In Campaign mode this is even worse, because you're very limited building and units wise to begin with, and have to unlock move via out of mission research so you can use them during a mission. Even very -rudimentary- buildings and units like farms, towers, and soldiers must be unlocked this way. Again, use a Trainer and just give yourself infinite Research points from the start - it's more tolerable that way.

Aesthetics wise, there's not a lot going on. An inability to rotate buildings for visual appeal dampens the colony building aspect and there's no real decorative elements. The voice acting is very poor and trite - there's no charm to what the units say and the intonation is all over the place. The maps sets are limited and dull, with few doodads to spice them up. The 'story', as much as there is one, is confused and insipid.

Unless you just -love- Steampunk, there is nothing to recommend here. The -bones- of a good game are there, but there's no flesh to rise it above abject tedium. Use a Trainer, it's really the only way to have fun here.

Could be a great game. But needs an optional save feature, especially in the campaign mode. Some people just want to play for fun without losing hours of precious free time each time a single zombie gets through.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

Is this game a masterpiece? YES, of course. How could you even ask? Its a fantastic mixture of colony building, RTS, tower defense and action RPG in steampunk aesthetic.

A pandemic turned most of Earth's inhabitants into mindless zombies. A few humans survived in a city well-hidden by nature (and high walls) and you lead (another) expedition to the outside to reclaim Earth back from the infected. Build outposts and push back the infection by killing all zombies in the area.

Building outposts works like in most RTS games. Starting from your HQ (Command Post) you build additional buildings to gather ressources and build defenses, while a train brings new settlers for your town and your troops fight the infected in RTS style. Your colony needs food, wood, stones, gold, energy... and an army (or high walls). Some levels are played in action RPG style, you play a single hero (or small party) exploring abandoned buildings/bunkers, searching for knowledge and ressources. Between the levels you are able to unlock upgrades from a large research tree (no unselecting), like improving buildings or allowing new units/structures to be built during the next levels. You can also level up your heroes. In some levels your colony is attacked by large hordes of infected, these levels play a bit like a tower defense game.

Single zombies can be killed by your soldiers rather easy, but they sneak to your colony from different sides and once they infect a building, the infection will spread like a bushfire and the zombies will overrun your whole outpost faster than you can shoot them. I really underestimated what it means when a zombie succeeds to infect one of your living quarters in a tightly populated area. Even strong military units will be overrun quite fast by large zombie hordes.

The clock ticks while you play, but you can pause the game at any time and still issue orders. It is possible to zoom the camera very close into your colony, or you can zoom out very far.

Conclusion:
Unforgiving RTS game (no save during a mission!) with borrowings from colony management, tower defense and action RPG. Defend your cities against billions of zombies.

As a fan of glory days of Command and Conquer, Age Of Empires, and the likes, I want to recommend this game, I really do, but there are glaring problems within the campaign that just sucks the fun out of it. The technology tree unlocks are weighted by the difficulty settings, there are no restarts or reloading previous saves, and you are knocked for failing, thus making the whole game more difficult from your mistakes. You must Iron Man through maps with no hope, repeating the same thing over and over again. Where's the fun? It's here but quickly fades due to some really dumb decisions by the developer. Also, the developers telling their customers to simply get better instead of listening to the vast complains just goes to show how out of touch they are. Maybe, and I mean maybe, purchase this game when it's on a steep sale.

It's an RTS game that removes the worst element of RTS games: micromanaging, and that places an emphasis on the best aspect of RTS games: turtling. It's the best. You can PAUSE! You can tell your units to just explore the map and kill enemies on their own while you do the fun stuff. You are incentivized to explore the tech tree instead of rushing your enemy. Can't recommend highly enough.

great concept but there are some things lacking.

No quick save option. no normal save option. You get only 1 linear save file and if you mess up you cannot return to the point before.

if you get beaten in a map you get a score penalty in the next game. It is pretty unfair.

In the campaign lots of maps have a time limit. this means this game cannot be played casual because you are under constant pressure to finish it in the time frame provided.

The zombie waves also provide some kind of time pressure but this i do not mind, you get times to focus on defends and on expansion. the maps are a bit small for the objective. you really need to use every square centimeter.

If an extra save option was provided and if the time limits where abolished this would be one of my favorite games but now it infuriates me

Fun little game! Been enjoying it so far! Super cool little RTS survival game.
Used to mess around with the survival sandbox kind of mode they had during early access.
Where the objective is to last a certain amount of days.

You build a little town in the middle of the map. Which is crawling with zombies and other types of monsters. Acid spitting zombies, giant zombies. all kinds of ghouls. Construct hovels for the population to live in. Those of which can be upgraded later along with most of the other buildings in game.
The more population you get gives you more income. However, you also have to manage income of resources. Such as, Food, lumber, stone, iron, oil. All of which are used to construct higher tier buildings. Also, to train troops which you will need more of as your town expands.

During the survival part of the game before you start you can adjust settings. That will impact the difficulty making it easier or much harder. If playing harder settings. There will be more zombies as well as the special enemies. The hordes that attack every few days also have more zombies in them with more of the special enemies mixed in.

The maps are also randomly generated. Which adds it's own set of challenges. Some cases you might get a horrible map that can be hard to set up a defence for the late game or it can be easier with plentiful resources and choke points to defend.

There is a campaign mode as well. Although i have not touched that part of the game yet.

Graphics are nice. They have those old fashioned 2D sprites and they are nice and colourful easy to look at.
the various maps all have a post apocalyptic look to them and that makes total sense. looks great overall.

Not too much for music from what i hear. However, what's there is good. when the hordes attack and it's pretty good.
kind of sounds like starcraft to me. Just with less tracks.

I say pick it up. whether on sale or not.

Jesus Christ. What is that interface? Starcraft Broodwar, in 1998, had better interface. Hotkeys that actually worked. Constructing walls... CONSTRUCTING WALLS. Age of Empires doesn't ask you to build a tile at a time, and it is 20 years old. What the hell?

For some reason, the border of the map isn't supposed to be used. It seems a very lazy design flaw by 2020's.

The concept is interesting, but here is the thing: if one zombie touches your tent, they instantly multiply in numbers and you autolose.
Otherwise, the game uses the same basic strategy for every map: build, expand a little, fortify your expansion, expand a little, fortify your expansion, until you ran out of map to expand.

5/10, tops.

Fabulous fun totally spoilt by an Iron Man only mode. I cant be the only person who gets tired, makes a tiny error or gets totally overrun by a sudden charge of half a dozen witches in the only part of the defences that are vulnerable. To be fair I don't mind getting overrun. I do however mind the fact that an otherwise great game is ruined by a momentary lapse or a rather odd random zombie generator overdoing it a bit. Adding a normal save mode would instantly switch my thumbs down to thumbs up. Too many great plays have been ruined for me this way. Sadly I've made the decision to uninstall as I don't wish to play the way this game was designed.

Intro:
A very enjoyable RTS hampered by a piss-poor campaign. Most of your fun will come from the skirmish mode, which is the core gameplay with no restrictions on the tech tree.

Visual:
A very cool steampunk art style with well-designed character models. Animations are limited but well-crafted and never grow old. The environment is also well defined and pleasant to look at. The colour pallet suits each different biome. The colour choice and contrasting in general really impresses me. The visuals sell the setting amazingly.

Audio:
The audio is very functional. Each sound is clear and it is easy to understand what is going on at any point. Selection sounds are also distinct and none are jarring. Unit voices can grow a touch annoying, but they are easy to zone out. The music also suits the background very well. No tracks will stand out, but I feel this is a good thing since it functions very well as background ambience. Unlike most games, I haven’t felt the need to replace the soundtrack with my own library.

Gameplay:
The core gameplay is a mix of base building, clearing ambient enemies and wave defence. You have to claim the map back from ambient zombies while creating bulkheads against periodic waves. This strikes a good balance between planning static defences and managing troop production and micro. You are constantly struggling to find the balance between constant expansion and defence. At no point will you have enough resources – the generator of each resource consumes other resources, resulting in a constant shortage. Given the growing threat of each wave, you must expand or die, leading to you having to think ahead and implement solutions before the problems themselves arise.

Essentially, this game has a really enjoyable gameplay loop.

There is nice variety among the zombies, even if they mostly fall into tiered basics (walkers, runners, tanky runners) and some specials (tank, spitter, etc). This variety is enough to keep you on your toes while still being able to anticipate what challenges await. There are also Villages of Doom (buildings that spawn zombies) and Giants (larger boss-like zombies). These provide hotspots on the map with particular challenges that require particular approaches. These can and will influence the pattern of your reclamation and expansion.

A rather unique mechanic in the game is also sound. Every attack generates sound, with multiple units in close proximity generating a greater degree of sound. This provides opportunities to micro units to manage aggro, allowing skilled players to expand far sooner due to sound management.

Skirmish mode is the heart of this game. You select from a variety of modifiers that dictate the difficulty of the game (from 33% to 800%) and then load. This mode is incredibly replayable since every spawn contains different resources, landscape and zombie spawn patterns. Defeat will often happen due to a random zombie sneaking past your defences, overzealous expansion or inadequate preparation for waves. Even losing in this game is an enjoyable experience

Loss will often occur as a snowball – one small breach leads to an ever-expanding horde. Sometimes you have panic and salvage the situation. Other times it’s gg. There is something really satisfying about repairing a breach – the darkened husks of structures devoid of life rekindle their lights and civilians begin repopulating the area. This only amplifies the sense of resilience that the game offers.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the campaign I have little positive to say. The format is a series of skirmish style missions with some holdout and ARPG style missions to provide variety. The campaign features a tech tree that lets you pick and choose how you want play. Be careful: your choices are final.

Missions feature a difficulty rating, though this is rarely accurate. Some missions will face you with final waves that are impossible to manage with your current tech choices. Since you cannot re-tech, you are forced to complete other missions and come back. But by then, you have still suffered a score penalty from having failed the mission initially. If there was a better description of what to expect, then you can at least approach each mission when you are confident that you have the appropriate tech. If each mission featured a difficulty breakdown similar to skirmishes, then the player may feel less ambushed by these situations.

The ARPG-style missions are exercises of tedium. You control a single hero unit and explore infested facilities while looking for resources for the main campaign. These are slow, clumsy and grinding. The holdout missions have you prepare defences using what currency you have acquired in the campaign. These are a cool idea with a poor execution. The earlier missions simply require spamming soldiers then going afk for ten minutes. Later missions of these type likewise feel like speedbumps rather than enjoyable gameplay.

Story:
In a word: abysmal. The setting is a cool idea with humanity forging out from their last bastion to reclaim the surrounding lands. This is spoiled by a plot with no substance and uninteresting lore. There is no interaction between characters, there is no development of the world based on your events. Simply put, the story has no actual substance. This only serves to further sour the experience of the campaign.

Controls:
The game handles quite well and features rebindable hotkeys. A pause mechanic is present which is a huge quality of life feature that greatly benefits players of a lower skill. Even so, experienced players will often find themselves pausing regularly.

Achievements/Completion:
Achievements are acquired through standard gameplay. As you improve you will unlock more of the achievements. I quite like this approach to achievement design – the player’s completion is tied to their growing competence at the game.

Final Thoughts:
Perhaps the most competent title in this branch of RTS. A great atmosphere is combined with engaging and challenging gameplay. Unfortunately, the experience is marred by an unsatisfactory campaign. It is worth buying (even at full price) for the skirmish mode and core gameplay.

This game is completly reincarnation of oldschool game Stronghold/Stronghold Crusader, you build base and gather resourses, build economics trying to survive and killing enemies. Main resourse types that is represented is like in Stronghold, Gold, Wood, Stone, Iron and Oil. However there is ofcourse modern features like game engine.
It would be cool if game had somekind multyplayer, somewhat like in oldschoolgames like in Perimeter: Geometry Of War, where you not just fight NPC-intelict but also have abuility to terraform some of land scape and capture unpowered teslatowers networks with buildings from enemies (other players or bots) and fight against other units.

How this game got even half of the positive reviews that it has is beyond me. Great concept, poor execution and an extremely short-lived fuse with ANY of the things that were done right.

Wait until a free weekend so you can burn out. Otherwise, this is like a free flash title from addicting games / armor games from back in the day that should at most be charging $5. Bet it would market better that way too.

Honestly, I didn't want to write a negative review as you can see, I got an insane amount of playtime on this game and I do enjoy it. However... One of the devs got offended by my criticism and deleted my comment in the discussions forum.

So I decided he must really want to see that comment in the form of a negative review instead. This way everyone can see it. Especially potential buyers of the game. If you wanna debate me in a private thread or in private messages, fine, but I take extreme offence to the deletion of my comments.

Basically it's been my experience that the devs don't respond to customer opinion. They have their vision of the game, and nothing can tarnish it.

They have two game modes in campaign (Hero missions, and Swarm Defense) that are UNIVERSALLY despised by their playerbase as tedious, grindy, and just plain not fun. These two game modes have multiple threads criticizing them on the discussion forum where the most hardcore fanboys of TAB live. NO ONE defends those game modes. They are lazy and poorly implemented untested pieces of trash.

The devs have had this feedback for months and have made no effort to comment or fix the problems with those game modes. I think it's fair to say they don't plan to fix them.

[Here's the deleted comment]

You are free to debate me like you have. Keep in mind that harsh comments are nicer than reviews.

You've had 4 pages and how many months to comment on hero missions and haven't.

I get it, they took a lot of work to make and you guys wanna move onto the next game. They're built so deeply into the campaign it would require a massive overhaul to fix. And adding an option in the game to let people skip them would basically be admitting your fault.

Assuming we ever get TAB-2, I'd be willing to bet that Hero Missions will get a significant overhaul then.

The reason I'm harsh is because I don't believe you have any intention of changing this and minor comments will either be ignored or used in a sequel. At least now you are talking about it.

And ultimately, you gave us these things, probably knowing they were trash. So I think you deserve a good tongue lashing over it.

[End of original comment that got deleted]

Fun game, but the campaign left a shit taste in my mouth, so I'm not recommending it until it gets some work done. Don't penalize players for not winning on the first try, especially when you can just save scum anyway and negate that penalty. Missions where you control one unit and kill hundreds of zombies for half an hour are not fun. Fix performance issues that many players still have, I don't want to have to play this game on full screen to avoid getting 20 fps.

Sadly can't recommend this game. I mean it's fun to play but it crashes all the time and takes my save game with it -- meaning if I'm playing the campaign, I have to start over at the beginning.

Maybe with more polish and bug fixing it will be stable enough to enjoy.
