Farm crops, fish, raise small animals, harvest and refine resources to rise in dominance in the world. Defend your base from Hunter attacks, and raid their bases to steal their loot.

Spielspaß ist was anderes.

The Forest.

It is a very fun game but it does have a lot of grinding to get the materials but if you need a game that does not involve much hard thinking and just need to zone out but still have a good challange then this is the game for you. I love playing Subsistence when i need to just slow my mind down after a long day. Very well done art work and graphics and the longer you play and the more you get the more of the map you can explore easily.

I'm not sure why I purchased this, then never really played it before. I bought it over a year ago (not sure exact date), and then for whatever reason decided I either didn't like it or didn't enjoy it.

Recently decided to download it again and try it out, and man do I LOVE this game! More realistic than most survival games when it comes to food perishing, weather changes, supply gathering (in that it takes time to achieve things), etc. I do wish there were more natural enemies (I know there are several, but they get easy to spot and predict). I'd love to see some owls or hawks that can potentially steal food from you or your base. Would also love something like snakes or spiders that cause health issues. That's just me though haha

I would definitely recommend this for anyone who loves large, open-world games based on difficult survival. Keep it up guys!

This game has potential, however it is not a true survival game, it's a LOOT BOX GAME!
Yeah 85 percent of the items you need are in loot boxes that randomly spawn in daily..........so you really just chop wood and look for loot boxes.......not very fun imo, with just a few tweaks and no loot boxes it could be amazing though! :)

A very unrated game by far. For one developer to create this is amazing. I love the survival aspect on here from changing seasons, to wildlife, and the hunters. A true sandbox in my opinion. To set up base and gather resources in need of survival is addicting itself, but Subsistence mixes this recipe well. You never have enough of something but not impossible to acquire it if needed. If you looking for a different survive and thrive game that is visually stunning alongside it's game-play then look no further. I don't want to spoil anything on here which is why I stay vague but 10/10 from me.

Very immersive environment, I can play for hours and not feel like a cartoon character. Build is flexible for the genre, games primary focus appears to be destroy the human like NPCs or other players. However you can play with out them and then its just you against the various wildlife. If you are not into a life or death chase with the wildlife most of it is programmed to wonder around in a small radius with plenty of notification if you get to close. I find the concept of the recovering trees to be the most inventive. Most of the subsistence life styles I have observed find the collection of fire wood not only a necessity but a tedious chore. Especially if you live in a local that does not allow the removal of healthy trees for any reason. This concept is the closest I have seen of providing the need without actually removing the tree. The drop boxes add a bit of fun as well, trying to grab them before the local grizzle catches you. I highly recommend whether you are a hunter, explorer, builder or want to find a virtual arena to chase your friends around in. What ever floats your boat, pretty sure this developer has it for you.

NOT WORTH ANY MONEY---I have spent MANY years playing open world sandbox survival games, the reason for me not recommending this game is for several reasons!
1) The animals are WAYYY to over powered, it shouldnt be hard to kill a wolf as that is the easiest animal after chickens and rabbits. I understand the difficulty for the bears but still WAY to hard unless you have a shotgun and your some distance away so you have time to run!
2) the hunters are stupid over powered, dead shot accuracy every time and shoot you a mile away with a friken 9mm get outta here. plus I turned on retaliate only and still they came after me and killed me like 10 times for no reason, I wasn't even that close to them...
3) after building the command block, having to wait for power and mass to build something is STUPID! If I have the materials to build it I should be able to....
4) Why does your hunger, protein and veggies fall so FAST, it's like the only battle I really face, I shouldnt have to eat several times in one games day time....
5) why do the animals have a level up system yet we dont?
6)What's the point to this game other then trying to kill the hunters n stay alive....you made the game way to hard for such a basic concept.
7) the beacons are almost IMPOSSIBLE to see, they are a faint white color and they are TINY....and how come after I die it takes 100 seconds for the beacon to even show? thats just dumb...
8) I don't see the difference between easy, normal, and hard...it's all the same....you die you lose everything! that should be an option aswell like you have literally made a game that is damn near impossible, you have to die a million times and hope to god you kept everything from all your journeys of making it back with all your stuff place in a container and go out and die again, repeat untill you have over 200 of every thing you need to collect. then maybe you can start the game fr. but its pointless to eat all your food to just go and die, save your food, save everything you get dont even finish building you base just place a crate somewhere and go looting till you have EVERYTHING n like i said maybe then you can try to play the game....
PLEASE FIX YOUR GAME AND i WILL CHANGE MY REVIEW I really would love to try and play the game but im already bored with dying a million times just to try and build a base....NOT WORTH IT!!

I take back my original review. New review below.

if you accept the game for what it is, it's great fun. Simple, basic and not a AAA title, but it does have it own unique charm and mechanics. Go for it, buy it, you will get your moneys worth at the full price.

PS: Could use a bit more tweaking on the AI to makes things a bit more obvious. Looking forward to seeing what the DEV adds next. :)

Wood Chopping Simulator with survival elements. You can relax and enjoy base building and crafting by removing hunters and making animals less common, or enjoy constant harassment of hunters and animals alike. It's pretty entertaining either way because you will be sexually ravaged by an animal at some point. The death animations are great.

I believe this is a solo project, but there are very good content updates (just sometimes far between) that add more elements of survival, or depth to the crafting. I've enjoyed playing this very much so far.

still a ways to go. AI is as bad as its ever been, wich makes this game broken until fixed as all the game play revolves around the AI.

This game might be challenging, but the Survival Genre needs truly Difficult games. Which is a great thing! As once you get your cozy shelter established, it feels enriching! Especially once it starts raining outside the windows, you are nice and cozy on the inside. The only downside of the game is that it doesn't have Marshmallows.

Typically, I stay away from early-access titles, especially recommending them, as they generally become stagnant or dead by developers who have no incentive to finish their product because they've already gotten our money. However, I am willing to make an exception for this game. Before I get into my reasoning for this, let me tell you my likes, dislikes, concerns, and recommendations for this game.

Likes:
Environment- There is currently only one map to play on at the moment, but it is large enough that I don't feel caged in (even though you literally are). The changing seasons is something unique that a lot of games don't bother to add and it’s not just a passive scenery change. The seasons and weather are an actual factor against your survival. Hot summer days fatigue and dehydrate you, where taking a dip in the lake to cool off is a must. Brutal winter blizzards that produce white-out conditions and drop the temperature to deathly lows. Even altitude plays a factor, where the higher you travel up the mountain, the colder it gets. Another factor that I like (though some may not) is that the environment is indestructible, so trees, rocks, the ground, etc. are all permanent. This prevents the map being deforested or obnoxious mining pits and other “holes” in the map that inevitably take place on other crafting games. This keeps the amazing views and scenery fresh and untouched for all to enjoy.

Base Construction- Keeping in mind that the environment is indestructible, it is impossible to smooth out a patch of terrain to start laying down a foundation. This is not a problem, as the game allows you to clip all building pieces into the surrounding barriers, so that you can truly build anywhere, even to a fault. You can build floating bases over water, or even in the sky (although ColdGames is currently working on structural integrity to eliminate the unrealistic building potential). Once you have the main foundation pieces down, they become the parent pieces, which everything else snaps to. On the inside of your base, adding storage chests, work benches, and any other utilities can be freely moved around without snaps, and even clipped through other items in some circumstances. There are enough pieces present to make some truly varying and unique builds, if you have the dedication to grinding for the materials.

Survival- Surviving in this game truly feels like an accomplishment. You can even passively compare your “survival” stats with anyone else on the server who is online. Things like how many times you have died, how many animals you have killed, all the way down to how many logs you have harvest, are all stats that you and other players can see about each other. With all of the things the environment throws at you, along with how scarce everything is, you really do feel rewarded for surviving several in-game weeks or months (or even years if you’re good) without dying. If you choose the male avatar, he even starts growing a beard the longer you live.

Dislikes:
AI- The AI in this game definitely leaves something to be desired, specifically the hunters, rogues, and miners (all human AI). The animals are acceptable, but not great. Depending on the difficulty, the human AI are either painfully inept, or frustratingly god-like, and sometimes both at the same time. They have infinite ammo with near perfect accuracy, while you are forced to suffer through maintaining just enough ammo to hunt for a day or two. Worse, when you kill them, they MAYBE drop a bullet or two, but generally nothing useful to make them worth killing other than defending yourself.

Gunplay- I’m going to be brutally honest, the gunplay in this game is bad. There is no way around it. The game is built with a hitbox system that is terrible in its’ current state, bullets that travel like airsoft BBs, and damage stats that are more on the level of counter-strike, requiring multiple headshots to kill hunters and animals alike, depending on the weapon you’re using. This game would really be a step up with a more tactical-hardcore approach to the gunplay.

Looting/Crafting essentials- As many others have stated, regardless of how many hours you invest in building a fortress and getting all of the “advanced” goodies for your base, the grind is still the same at any stage of the game. You will always be starving for cartridge cases, unless you just stick with the bow. If you just stick with the bow, you will always be starving for nails. There are ways to make these things for yourself, instead of looting them, but the material cost vs output is a total rip-off, which will leave you starving for other resources.

Concerns:
One of my biggest concerns is the lack of theme or cohesion with all of the in-game assets. Because there is only one person working on this game, I can understand and appreciate the use of the Unreal asset store, but at least pick assets that fit the same theme. The main rifle in the game is an SVT-40, a pretty rare WWII Russian battle rifle. The main handgun is an M9 Beretta, a fairly common “modern” 9mm pistol. The base tech is just plain weird, with antique stoves and refrigerators, but futuristic/sci-fi power and mass storage and drills and refineries. The distillery looks like some kind of steampunk concoction of 1800’s tech mixed with 2077 tech.

Not all vegetation yields seeds, or lets you extract seeds, making at least 50% or more of the plants in the game artificially scarce. The math doesn’t add up with certain craftables, requiring too much input for too little output. The cost to repair things is almost not worth it with the majority of base pieces and weapons, barely being better than just making new parts. Upgrades to base items is worth it, but very grindy. Weapons upgrades force you to use more and more valuable and scarce materials to keep it repaired. The decay rate of tools and weapons seems too high, especially on upgraded weapons.

Recommendations:
This game could benefit from some what I think are very minor fixes/tweaks. Firstly, the gunplay needs to be more realistic and hardcore. The survival in this game is hardcore, so the use of firearms should match that difficulty. Add multiple recipes for the same item, so that you aren’t bottlenecked by the ultra-rare materials. Let the player make stone-tipped arrows instead of wasting nails, when in the early game, nails are the biggest bottleneck. Make the material requirements for all items more plausible and realistic. I don’t know why I need pearls for circuit boards. I don’t know why I need sinew to craft high-tech base items. I don’t know why I need cloth to build a gun. Make the foundation legs terminate against any surface they clip with, so that they don’t float in space on the level below them. Pick a coherent theme and replace all of the assets with something that fits the theme.

I know this is a long review, but this is a game I am truly passionate about. As I stated at the beginning, I don’t usually partake in early-access titles, because they usually die with an incomplete product and a dev walking away with their pockets full. However, I truly believe that this dev cares about his game. His updates are infrequent, but meaningful. His efforts to make this a truly stand-out survival game are apparent. The game is solid enough to be played and acceptable as is. Notice I’m saying “his” a lot? Yea, there is literally only one guy responsible for all of this. For that, I commend his efforts and his responsiveness to the community and truly believe that what he is making is a great game. For that, I recommend this title to anyone who is willing to grind through the learning curve and who enjoys survival/crafting games.

The Game Has So Much Potential. It got me hooked for awhile, enjoyed the seasonal changes. But as so many people mentioned before. It does not seem to get easier. Yes, it's rewarding when you finally achieve what it is you've been grinding for. But you'd assume, that over-time you'll have an easier way to get resources( wood etc.) But you don't, you will forever be stuck with hitting those trees the same amount as from the start.

It would be nice to implement more advanced tools such as chainsaw etc.
It's clear that the developer cares about building element in the game. And it is absolutely beautiful as to what can be achieved with building. BUT DUE TO SLOW/DRAGGY PROGRESSION AND RESOURCE GATHERING...it gets very frustrating.

For quick progression, be sure to have a friend! THAT'S A MUST

Okay, tried to like this game. Great system of weather and the crafting is fun but tooooo grindy. Even on easy everything is really hard to survive. Disease is insane to cure. Take too many resources to build the basic walls and chests etc. Fishing is good, but again too grindy to get fibers and worm to get 1 small or maybe if you are lucky bigger fish. Base management is a bit much...energy to craft everything? Ya haven't even gotten to winter yet...can't grow enough cotton to get started...not having fun because it's just too hard for me. I choose easy to explore and enjoy not to be killed by every wolf and bear that attacks me. I can kill them but then get 1 meat 2 if lucky...almost never the needed liver and that food goes bad quick while you wonder. It's just too hard sorry...Yes I'm not hardcore...I like to explore and discover and improve my character. Can't even get clothes made much less get any strength or skills probably because there is no leveling in this game another big mistake. Need character development too...oh well I'll keep looking for another game one day find something fun like Remants (which is unfortunately not finished enough yet but very fun)

After 400 odd hours this game is ruined.
Don't bother renting a server just use co op, the whole point of having a server just got nerfed for no reason.
Wan't life to continue when you're offline - tough luck... No energy gains, no plant growth? What's the point?

Just hook up a local co op session you're £'s better off.

The whole mechanic of AI hunters slowly moving into the area and setting up their bases that can eventually turn into massive compounds if left unchecked is an AMAZING mechanic for a single-player base building game and by far the best part of this game.

My main issue with this game is progression. It's either blindingly slow, or nonexistent in some cases. For instance, gathering wood never gets easier. There isn't a better tool or a perk or anything that helps make the more tedious tasks easier the further you progress, so a massive majority of the game is spent hitting trees.

Loot gathering is wondering around looking for boxes and getting 1 - 2 items per box. This also never gets easier or better (Other than making lockpicks and unlocking big boxes which are extremely difficult to find)

The game is repetitive with no real feel of progression for a survival game. The entire game is:

1) wonder around gathering boxes
2) Kill wolf or bear for fat
3) hit trees endlessly
4) you have now waited long enough for power/mass for your next base upgrade
5) repeat

Would be much better if I crafted all of the junk I get from boxes myself by harvesting raw resources with tools I can later upgrade for more/better resources.

Was A LONG DARK addict for years, over 1500 hours in that. Then I tried this game. I haven't played TLD since. I almost quit this game 100 times, it is tough. You will die, repeatedly. Then slowly you start dying less, then you realize 6 months have passed, and your still alive. This game is a grind, but man, it feels good when you finally get it! This is not a gimmie game. It takes time, but as you can see by my hours, I have gladly given it time, lol! Give it a try, if you are a true survivor fan, you will like it, or love hating it, lol!

Big fan of survival games, and like all survival games this one comes with it's setbacks, but it seems to have more setbacks than good. Because of my love for the survival genre, I had quite a few people suggest this game to me. I skipped reading the reviews simply because it seems folks don't normally grasp what a survival game is supposed to be and will complain about things that don't truly matter. After reading a lot of the reviews though, I can see where most of them were coming from. It is disappointing to see that the dev left his full time job to work on this in 2018 and it is still where it is. A game that came out long after 7 Days To Die, yet lacks a lot of the basic fundamentals that a survival game should have. You have things such as a refinery and stoves, even air conditioning.... But you can't craft a throwing spear, or basic arrows just out of some cordage, sharpened sticks, and feathers. Coming across resources are difficult. Much of what you need can't be crafted, and when you do come across it you won't get or find much. The crafting recipes for much of the items are also wayyyyyyyy out of whack. I have played Subnautica, 7DTD, Green Hell, etc., and there was reward to the grinding. It is as though the balance between realism and a video game are constantly tossed around with some things being overly realistic, and somethings being so far fetched it makes no sense. Like having the stuff to build an air conditioner yet needing nails to make an arrow?? The crafting needs major refinement. The animal spawning is absurd. So many predators yet they wonder around and co-exist. Hunters come to attack your base and the Grisly bear out front just ignores them. The quest for nails is never ending it seems, when before there were metal nails, it was common to use wooden pegs to keep things together. Why can't we have that and then evolve to something sturdier built with the nails?

I understand that this game is Early Access, and it is admirable that it looks a lot better than 7DTD when they have a whole group of folks working on that game and it looks like dog shit still. Not to mention the mess with Tell Tale. But expecting folks to be tolerable with one Dev after so long with the amount of people who have bought the game you question what the money went towards if it didn't go towards hiring help to craft this game into the diamond it should be by now.

As for right now, I can't honestly suggest this game to anyone. There were quite a few times my buddies and I even thought about quitting and not coming back until we saw something major in an update. The endless grind to still be questing for nails, or ammo, or cotton seeds, it gets to be too much. Then when you finally get the items you need you go to craft what you wanted all along to find you need something that is even more rare. All the while the hunters have randomly everything you can't get. I also don't understand how you can loot the hunters and they have a bunch of random things, most of the time not useful, but you can't take weapons or clothing? What is the point of having them? At this point you just avoid them as there is no purpose for them. They don't help you, they make you waste resources repairing the damage they cause to your base. But there is no reward for engaging them.

The power and mass system is also a mess. You work hard to have the power and mass to craft these items so you have them at your base, just to find you need to grind even more for more mass and power to craft things within those items.

If you love grinding with little to no reward, then this game is for you. Be warned though, this game still has a very long way to go before it will reach the level of being a true survival game. The only thing at the moment that makes it a survival game is you are lucky if you even survive an hour playing it without wanting to un-install and get a refund. I really hope we see great things come from this title. Strangely enough I knew nothing about it until a week ago someone mentioned it. A month ago while playing Green Hell my friend and I were talking about a game like this and how it would completely turn the market for Survival games upside down if done right. This game just doesn't hit that mark quite yet. We can only hope that changes in time.

There are many bugs that need fixed. I hope it happens soon!

alright so ive played the game only a few hours but ive gathered what i need to.
As far as survival goes, theres none to be had, finding things in hard if not borderline impossible, theres never a free moment from dangerous animals, building takes way to many resources, some of which are entirely luck based, from bags which are randomly around the map which again is entirely luck based, not to mention extremely wierd that bags randomly spawn around the map with building supplies. it just had a wierd ration of demands for a survival game. i dont know if later game gets better, but with how small the maps are i cant imagine it matters.

I love the concept of the game but I think that for someone who likes to build around and still enjoys some parts of the survival, it has become unnecessarily difficult with the updates where when you shoot a chicken, you cant harvest anything from it. I understand you want to make it realistic, but maybe it should not be part of EASY mode.

you get to set how long a year is and what month you start in but remember you are in the northwest Canadian wilderness and no way can you survive with out a sealed cabin of some sort and a stock pile of fire wood.... gonna need to store veggies and meat some how it is harder than rust or the forest because you have to keep one eye for animals one eye for hunters one eye for drops boxes or bags and one eye on the weather.... let me know where you found the extra eyes cuz i need some

Not fun, it's very bare bones and the game hides this fact by introducing artificial difficulty like extreme amounts of predators and extreme scarcity of materials like plant fibers, buildings require nails which can only be found through crates or crafted late game which seems very unrealistic seeing as survival in the wilds wouldn't normally require supply crates. Overall boring/exasperating experience recommend to any survival fans, don't listen to those youtube reviews (like me) they are lies.

The animals are bullet sponges with levels like in a rpg, that doesn't suit a survival game pretty well imo.
On top the map is overrun by these bullet sponges.
The crates dispersed around the map force you to move, because you need the materials in those crates to make your base, but at the same time the content of the crates make the game pretty rng based, it can take a while to get what you need.
Would be cool to have points of interest like in rust and 7 days to die instead of the crates dispersed everywhere, that would at least make more sense and make the map less empty.
To finish, a simple rain can kill you, yes, just a little bit of rain, lol.
I kinda want to like the game, I didn't play much but the game legit doesn't do much to keep my interest longer than 2 minutes.
There is a difference between a difficult game and an artificially difficult game.

Subsistence is overly simple with horrible game balance. The number of predators around is enough to suggest that the bears and wolves have teamed up to slaughter you and you alone. The garbage AI makes it feel like the chickens and rabbits have done the same. Finding even barebones materials is up to RNG a lot of the time. And getting rained on early in a game can mean freezing to death three times in a row due to weather you don't have a console to change. (Fires can't be built without a roof in these conditions, and roofs need nails which are only found by chance in boxes.)

Combine this with the fact that you can shoot a rabbit in the face with a 9mm handgun, and it will run off like you hissed in its direction. It takes like 7 or 8 shots to take down a wolf as well. There are no body part modifiers. And animals frequently glitch or spawn in strange places. It's just not very fun at all especially where hunting/combat is concerned.

I think the survival box mechanic is ultimately flawed. It's just not fun to have to run for two hours up and down a beach, just to find enough nails to build a deck. Sure, you can forge them later on, but not at any respectable rate. The grind in this game is way too high given the simplicity of its mechanics. There are only so many times that I'm going to want to strain my eyes for fiber, or unlock a box hoping for nails.

Still, if you have a stretch of good days in-game, it can be somewhat enjoyable. The base-building is relatively strong and has a neat aesthetic to it. The hunters provide a nice bit of challenge and for what the game is there are a decent amount of weapon options. But given the number of other survival sandbox games out there, that far exceed this one in terms of quality, I'd say save your money.

This is not an easy game, espessially not for beginners. There are times you hate it and the developer who made this game (not really offcourse) But this game makes you try all over again and again and again, because you want too. And that in my opinion is the definition of a good game. No matter how many times you die, you just want to play this game to progress. All my respects to the developer.
I am doing singleplayer by the way.

No and yes ... it has major potential but the DEVs don't listen to their player base I see GREAT suggestions that would help this game a lot, but they go unheard or the devs just don't care. cause nothing has change in that department. They say they are trying to make a game that hardcore survival but all it does is make you frustrated beyond belief because it really has potential. There are some things are just ridiculous like having to buy spawn points on your bed with 350 power the bed should be free as it take a lot to even make it in the first place. There are not enough box spawns to really make any head way and you starve to death over and over. The guns are way under powered and chickens, rabbits, wolves, cougars and bears are best friends. So I tried to go to the easy mode route, to give this game a chance, well that doesn't exist even though it is in the game there is no difference between easy and normal there is no safe place to be to try and kill animals as they can go straight up the face of a huge bolder or cliff not even in your base cause 3 hits and your base is gone along with all you stuff. You find yourself saying this is so Stupid during game play and want to rage quit A lot. Tell me were is the fun in that. they need to lighten up a little or at least make a real easy mode so people can also enjoy this game. It really could be a winner if they would just listen.

For a title that has been out for 5 years, 5 years of Alpha and early access....personally I am so tired of devs using this tag as an excuse for empty content, lack of development and progression of a title. With this many copies sold there is zero excuse.

The game leaves you feeling extremely empty, and while understanding the premise that this is billed more as a hardcore survival, searching for 15 minutes for simple fibers....just no.... Getting wood from trees but they do not fall or despawn....no. I liked that at least it is not the typical zombie end of world that the market is over filled wit, but doesnt make up for the fact there are so many more titles that are actually progressing leaving titles like this on the floor of the garage to be forgotten.

It is actually the grind that is awful. Go out and find bags??? Weirdest thing on a survival game I've ever seen. Cant recommend unless you have 8 hours a day to make any kind of progress in this one, just another grind, die, rinse, and repeat. I will continue to chip away at it, but not sure if Ill be in it for the long haul. I don't mind a grind but the whole, we are going to spawn deadly animals all around your base and not give you any ability to harvest resources to defend yourself...

Absolutely fantastic job for a sole developer, well done!

This game is one of the hardest ones to survive [based on my personal experience], so the reasons of people hating [or just not liking] it are quite clear.
- Every resource is scarce, every bullet is valuable, and punishing for each mistake is very painful.
- Getting resources (plus energy and base mass) for a device, upgrade, or sometimes even for a base bit, and finally installing it makes you feeling like a true hero.
- Killing a single predator is not that easy, and hunters are absolute kicka...s!
- Not to mention that hunting for particular resources, like sinew, is the whole quest itself...

BUT this is exactly what makes it different from all other survival games [based on my personal experience].
Here you have to learn how to survive step by step, each time paying a high price for your next piece of experience:
- How to move slowly and carefully, only allowing yourself to sprint rather short distances.
How to kill wolves and deers using just arrows, avoiding temptation to make it quick and lose a couple of bullets.
- How to use structures to hunt bears.
- How to keep your food indicators at not maximum, but rather sufficient, level.
- How to focus only on what's needed avoiding the rest...
- Well, eventually, how not to rush

Yes, slow, and yes, grinding, but all your efforts are rewarding at the end of the day.
Just learn how to play it instead of rushing, and you'll have a lot of fun!

A bit about other beautiful aspects:
- Lovely graphics
- Seasons changing, with not just the temperature and weather, but the overall landscape changes! I like that the developer is paying attention to small details
- Beautiful sky effects
- Winter fishing
...to cut it short, if you like the game, you will continue the list by yourself :)

(just for reference and fair judgement of the above, I played 7D2D, ARK, Empyrion, The Forest, Conan Exiles, Green Hell, Valheim)

Definitely a hard game to play at first. Once you get used to the game mechanics and the animal aggro distances, you'll be just fine. It is a grind-heavy game but, the environment and atmospheric sounds make harvesting less menial. Great game overall.

i Really Really want to like this game. I love survival games, and this seemed to have all the things i love. It is very bare bones. Basically it's the survivor vs Hunger/Weather/Bears & Dogs/NPC OP Hunters.

Pro's
*I love the chests that dont give too much loot and hard to find
*Food you have to fill not just one bar, but protein, fruit & Vegtable along with water
*Building is aesome, though not a lot to choose from, it clicks into place and just enough to be unique with wood stoves and stuff (WARNING: the moment you make the box you have 3 days before Hunters wreck your world)
*Large map, you really have to know landmarks and keep track of directions
*Weather is just beautiful, storms, seasons, even thunder to warn you of coming storms
*Bears and dogs give warning growls when nearby. If you lucky and dont stumble onto them you can back away (hopefully not into another one)

Cons
*Bare bones there is nothing but random loot drops and pieces of metal. occasionally find a carrot or strawberry but very basic
*Hunters - WTH is with 92876423 hunters that have unlimited resources, metal bases, unlimited ammo and guns right off the bat and claymores....yes bombs. While you still barely getting a basic wooden house and counting your bullets. Not only that but they will build their base right next to you and hold you hostage inside of it and they respawn in such a short time if you have to run back to your body you will loose it all. Also no wildlife attacks hunters, so you can't even use the predators around you to advantage running them through. Apparently Hunters are just OP. They killed the game for me.
*Body decay timer of 5 minutes- between dodging bears, dogs and hunters on a large map, pick the body you want to loot because you will time out.
*Bears, dogs and more bears and dogs. There are so many you can't go more than one screen away without running into 1 and sometimes 3-4 of them. Sometimes it's impossible to go forward without skirting miles out of your way threading between groups of them. Seriously what do they eat?! You.

Bottom line...I can't recommend it. It's the only game i've given a bad review on. I do not usually leave negative reviews, but the sheer frustration of trying to get to my body and getting killed by bears, dogs, hunters and then respawned again hunters i just killed way outweighs the pleasure of playing it. There is Zero balance in the game especially in the beginning, not with farming, building, or the npc pvp.

The Game is VERY hard at the easiest setting. I originally played SINGLE PLAYER no hunters. I died countless times. (then turned Auto Save OFF) Saved before engaging Enemy (wolfs/bears/hunters) Then reload game if I died. (I know that's cheating)
Walk before you can run (Or will run out of stamina fast)
Look out first before you open.(Don;t get attacked opening creates)
be aware of surroundings
learn to know distances to Prey.
looting is much the same. (if no spawns,Reset game and continue).
Likes :- I've played over 900 hrs (very addictive)
Balanced Game at the start
Easy to get started (after you died 100 times)But that is Survival.
(learning by your mistakes)
Dislikes :- Not many
I don't like the Poke Thru of terrain.(Needs to be Addressed)
Also construction COSTS needs to be HALVED.
What I would like to see:-
A use for Distiller for Solo Game ( make Bio fuel- 1 bottle of Alcohol + 2 Fish Oil = 32 Bio Fuel eg.)Iv'e wasted alot of resources to find out that the Distiller only makes Alcohol for Molitovs. (not happy :-( ).
With the storms I would Like to create a Lightning Rod to power some MASS. (cost Expensive for late game)
Also how do you UPGRADE to Lvl 4 on Solo game (No hunters).

Great Game
THANK YOU COLD GAMES (CG)

This is a game for people who like grindy games. What makes the grind really satisfying is that you can progress at a good pace without things getting too overpowered. I hope to see more improvements to building since that is the part I like best. Perhaps wooden shutters for windows as a step before glass, or just to have a different option visually.

I came here to vent my frustrations. My background: Loved Green Hell, enjoyed the survival aspect of The Forest but not the horror aspect, so this game looked ideal for me. However... I am really bored. There is no tutorial, no storyline and it seems like there is very little to do, I am wandering around with an axe chopping logs off trees and running away from wolves and bears, that's about it. In the aforementioned games you are surrounded by things to pick up and interact with and there is also a feeling of tension in the air that you need to quickly find food and water, in this game I have found water that I can't drink and chickens that I can't catch. I want to like it, but it is making it very difficult.

Spawn, chop a tree, run from a bear...die. Spawn chop a tree, HEY FOUND SOME FIBERS made some cordage run from bear and wolf ran out of stamina blamina...die. Got a friend on this game for co-op but so far we have not been able to cooperatively do a single thing together because we can't find each other on the map or see each other on the map and when we do...run from bear...die. Spawn completely apart on the opposite sides of the map. So let's make a base and maybe a spawn point right, well you better find a @!@#$$ TON of nails and chop trees till your fingers bleed just to get one foundation. Not for me or my friend on to the next survival game.

It's not so much that the game isn't fun, because it is. It is challenging, but also totally unbalanced. For example, you gather resources, build your base, and defend it from NPC's while simultaneously hunting/gathering/crafting...which is all enjoyable and challenging. But the lack of balance sucks...you cant damage the NPC base, but they can destroy yours. You can't pick up any of their weapons and have to craft your own weapons and ammo, yet they have infinite options and ammunition. The NPC enemies always know where your base is, but you have to either travel to their's at night when their campfires are lit up and appear on your map, or stumble on them...etc.

A little overaggressive with the survival aspects in the beginning. Why does making a campfire require biofuel when it's entirely possible with sticks and leaves? Why did I spawn with only a sports bra on a freezing mountain anyway? You can't really boil this into 'because it's hardcore survival' when I also spawn with a glowstick which is something I will hardly ever have in my possession at any moment, ever. It's kind of a shame because the building looks great.

I want to like this game, but currently, it's barely playable. The base building looks great, with a very neat and clean look. It takes way too many nails to build imo, but I can deal with that. The environment looks great with vibrant colors, and great graphics, but the animals and player model could use some work, which I can also get past. However, what I cannot handle, is the fact that there are entirely too many predators. Like every 30 meters there is a predator. There are more bears in this game, then there have ever been bears on Earth. Not only that, but they attack every...single...time. Bears are pretty shy and tend to avoid people, and rarely attack, but not on here. It is nonstop. Killed by a bear, spawn, try to find your body to get your stuff back, run from bears, wolves chase you, run more, die by a bear. It's ridiculous. I think if they tweak a few things, this could be quite fun to play, but right now, its a run from bear simulator.

i would avoid this game. Extremely unbalanced in its current state. Your playthrough revolves around finding boxes that spawn very few and far between. This leaves you unable to craft the basic items required to live past day one. Then when you finally do find a box it is most certainly guarded by a deadly animal that will kill you in one shot. I would wait a year or more before considering purchase. EXTREMELY frustrating to play at this stage. They ingredients for cordage are almost non-existence. Ran around for hours only finding four or five. That means no campfire and dead on day one as you freeze to death. Wait for updates is all i can say at this point, unless you like games that dont even give you the items to have a chance. Not sure why this game was even release at this point.

This is a review of the Singleplayer aspect of the game* -

Subsistence is pretty good, consistent large updates from the developer, cool fishing system, finding crates and obtaining loot is pretty enjoyable, aka the farming aspect of this game stands out and is fun. Upgrading your gear and creating a larger and stronger arsenal, while on the other hand trying to craft or find enough ammo to feed your newly made equipment.

There are hunters which are AI that will eventually (if you have the setting on) move into your world and start setting up camps and bases on the map after a few days when you start, they fish, hunt, and can expand their own base. They will even come and raid you, or come and attack you and try and get revenge if you try to assault them.

Keeping hydrated, hunting and eating to keep your veggies and protein meters full, to get the highest health benefits and making sure that you don't die from two shots from a hunter. When killing a large animal like a wolf, or bear, you can butcher them for various drops like meat or leather. After butchering, your hands have blood on them, which need to be cleaned before you get an infection.

I haven't quite gotten to exploring caves, raiding, or fully exploring the snowy areas. I only really care for the singleplayer and I don't intend on playing multiplayer anytime soon.

This game has got lots of potential. However, this is the part of the review where i sh*t on the game. The gunplay is terrible, judging where a shot is going to land or trying to hit a moving target is retardedly hard. Even sitting still trying to hit a non-moving target, I guess the bullets just don't exist at that point. Hunters can hit some crazy ass trick shots outta nowhere and you're dead. Hunting wolves and pretty much anything above that is a pain because the animals just want to do zig zags and become hard to hit for no reason, then you end up dying to some dumbshit.

Getting an infecton from accidentally drinking dirty water or from forgetting to wash your hands after cutting an animal up / not getting to a water source in time, is very frustrating when you get a negative effect that puts you at half health and stamina.......even after you die you still have these negative effects, like wtf is this shit. the only way to cure it is to either get lucky and loot a hunter's body, and maybe find some fish oil. Or go fishing with the practically non-existent worms that you need for bait. I would be fine with this if, #1 you didn't respawn with the negative effects, and #2 it wasn't such a pain in the ass to recover from.

All n' all i'm practically just cherry picking things that I haven't enjoyed about the game. It's a fun game with a lot of things to do, just minor picks that can become annoying. Base building is fun and you feel accomplished after gathering all your materials to build your base and expand for defense or extra room for machinery.

One of the best detailed survival games out there

I reviewed this game on Alpha update 55. I will not be criticising the game too harshly as it is still in the alpha stages where features of the game are not finalised and feedback will hopefully be appreciated.

Code Details listed may contain item or mechanic spoilers, there is no story aspect to the game.

The Good
  • The graphics are pretty and well optimised, I can play in 1440p with max settings with good FPS (GTX 970)
  • The crafting and item complexity is well thought-out
  • The difficulty is fair. Its a survival game and it feels like it
  • It's both fun solo or with friends
  • Base building is fun and you can be creative (hopefully more options in the future)
  • The game details and mechanics add extra immersion, such as running reducing protein levels quicker and males growing a beard over time
  • How the world changes with the seasons. From water freezing to trees changing as the year progresses, its very well done

What can be changed, improved, added or removed

Tools & Items
  • Some recipes are very expensive to make and I feel could do with balancing (a good comparison example is the 9mm pistol and a single ammo casing). Currently its a VERY grindy game
  • Weapons should do more damage to enemies. A level 1 wolf takes 4-5 shots to kill with an 9mm pistol (when I feel like it should take less)
  • The axe should be able to damage or finish off enemies but its basically useless against them. More melee weapons added to the game would be nice
  • Some items such as sinew are extremely rare to find when it is a very common requirement for crafting late-game

The Player & Environment
  • The character models look much more dated and ugly compared to the rest of the game
  • Your hunger level decreases a little too fast. I think the water level should be needed more than food, as that is the case in real-life
  • Fall damage is quite extreme, by this I mean you can drop 4th and break your legs or start bleeding
  • The world size feels quite small, it'd be nice to have more areas of exploration, such as more mountains, lakes, plains and rivers
  • When you exit water from swimming it can take a while to step on dry land, its as if the water is preventing you from leaving

The AI
  • The enemy AI is very jagged, they attack in either a straight line or zigzag movement (no smooth turning)
  • Wildlife hitboxes aren't quite right as impossible to head shot a wolf

While I may list more improvements to the game than the good, I still recommend this game for yourself or with friends as the points I make can be tweaked in a future patch. It is a very fun game with many layers of mechanics and details at a fair price and I hope the updates remain consistent every 3 months or-so as I look forward to playing the final 1.0 version of Subsistance.

1. Chopping mechanics good. 2 Inventory system good. Build mechanics good. Cons not enough food to survive unless you spend a half an hour gathering KELP to survive the night. Don't waste your 9 mm bullets on chickens. The 9 mm can barley kill a wolf. Not enough fiber plants in world . Then there's cotton were are they at? If you truly love hard core survival games then buy it. Fifteen hours and 10 restarts later I'm done. Need more cotton plants in the world. Senery is good.

Subsistence is a great game and I love it. There are some negative reviews mostly from people that don't understand the game, so let me explain a little. Subsistence is a survival game with a progression.

When you start the game you are getting low grade food and cooking it on a campfire. As you progress through the game, you advance your cooking up to an electric stove, you also begin to get higher grade domesticated meat. By mid game you are throwing extra food into the mass recycler because you have more than you can store in your fridge. Like real life you burn more calories the more you run around, so if your new, walk early game don't run, this will help.

When you start the game you are told to avoid the animals, by mid game bears and wolves are no longer a threat and you can kill them quickly. You start the game by crafting a simple bow and arrows, by mid-game you have rifles, shot guns, pistols etc. These can be upgraded multiple times to hit harder and carry more rounds before reload. You will also craft heavier clothes, ballistic vests, helmets, etc to increase your armor and take less damage.

The hunters (AI Humans) are in the game to make survival harder. Subsistence is NOT a first person shooter, so the game is not designed for hunting humans for profit. If you're new to the game turn off the hunters, you can turn them back on at anytime, or if they are getting overwhelming turn them off and they disappear from the map. You can turn them on at anytime and they will start over. You can also adjust their behavior, for example, set them to revenge attack only, they will attack your base only when you attack them first.

Overall the game is built very well and is designed for you to struggle, but as you progress through the game it is less grindy and there is more to do. By mid game it is less survival and more base building. You will reach a point where you raise all of your food with grow beds and animal houses. You will have autominers getting you minerals and water. You will be manufacturing your ammo and not looting it. etc..

I can grind with the best of em', but this is the grindiest grind I've ever had to grind. On the positive side, it's a very nice looking game. Ok, let's move on to the negative. Except for running around finding random crates and getting mauled by wildlife, there really isn't much more to do. The crafting is subpar at best and the gameplay is in need of some serious balance.

You kill a bear(if he doesn't kill you first) and get two lousy steaks and a liver. Really? All that from a 2-3 hundred pound animal. How generous. Now with the tapeworm your character obviously comes preinstalled with, that will give you enough food for a half a day if your lucky and don't exert yourself too much.

While your freezing your ass off, the NPC hunters are running around like their on vacation in Bermuda. I guess I must be cold due to being on the brink of starvation constantly. And that's one of the reasons this game is over the top grindy. It seems all you do morning, noon and night is try to keep yourself hydrated and fed.

Other games of this type give you a creative mode or console commands in the case you just want to craft and mess around. Not this game. It's the Dev's way or the highway. I just feel a game that's been out for over four years should be a little farther along and more balanced.

If the gameplay improves, I'll definitely swing back and update this review. But for now, I'd have to recommend passing on this grindfest.

You know that favorite low-budget 'B' movie, the one that you've watched dozens of times and could easily watch for dozens more? And it never gets old? And you have all the scenes ingrained in your head, and all the actor's lines memorized, yet somehow you're able to experience everything like it's your first time watching it? There is a video game like this.....Subsistence.

I come from 1K+ hrs in TLD and this game without a doubt has got to be the most underrated survival game on Steam. You can customize the AI or have no AI at all just you vs the environment. Just to name a few, crafting, base building, seasonal environments, mining, customizable AI hunters or none at all, farming, hunting, fishing, food cooking, multiplayer if you want, ect.. the day/night cycle is impressive. You have to achieve sustainability in a wilderness environment with elements of survival and a progression system. Yes there's tons of grinding involved but I don't mind it, it might look daunting at first but after a while it isn't. I have a 200 day/year cycle with the AI set to revenge only and it suits me fine, I don't bother them they don't bother me. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I've decided to review Subsistence after playing it this evening, for the first time in many months. The game was recently updated, and the update thankfully helped out a bunch of issues with general performance, multiplayer lag, and AI behavior. Combat is mostly enjoyable now. But the game is far from perfect.

Things I Really Like:
+ The base building - The boys and I constructed some cool bases. And also copied the larger of the AI bases, with some slight modifications.
+ Early game survival - Those first few days running around without any gear, just trying to avoid being eaten by a mountain line or ganked by some AI hunters.
+ The crafting - You can build a lot of different stuff in this game. It's great to be able to have options, especially when constructing your base.
+ Fishing - It's more enjoyable than hunting, on account of not having to deal with the hit boxes. It operates like a mini game.

Things I Really Hate:
The game play lives up to its title. You don't really flourish in this game. You barely subsist. This philosophy is baked into the game.

- You can expend a bunch of ammunition, equipment, bandages, time, and even several lives, to take out an enemy AI hunter base. You may even have gone all out to use a BCU cracker to completely destroy their base -- which takes a bunch of resources to build. And your reward is you don't get attacked from AI from that direction for some time, and you get like six pistol rounds, three feathers, some ashes from their fires, and maybe some zinc ore. The return on investment from combat sucks.
- It's frustrating that you can kill a hunter decked out with equipment, bulletproof vest, a helmet, and a rifle... but the only loot you get off the body (or rather, from their backpack) is a shotgun shell, two feathers, and a piece of cordage. You lose money engaging in combat.
- You consume a ridiculous amount of food. You can eat like 3-4 steaks a day, a bunch of protein bars, and several canteens worth of water. Then you look at your health and you're starving. So you shoot a bear, and you get 2 steaks and a liver out of it. So the liver is used for a basic antidote, to cure the poison status that you have from the last time you died. And the steaks carry you like 10 minutes into future. So again, you put in a lot of effort to fight or hunt, and acquire more material. But you barely pay for your investment.
- The player models still need some work. The guy still looks like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The girl still looks derpy. Also, there are only two player models. So if you play with more than one friend, it can be confusing who you're looking at. It can be frustrating in the heat of the moment.

Summary:
The game is fun. But it becomes a chore very quickly. I'd like to have more reward for my efforts, be it hunting, harvesting, or combat. Until then, I just can't play it much. There are just so many other games that I enjoy more. Because they don't make me grind. Or when I do, I'm actually rewarded, I'm at a net gain for my efforts.

D+

Not a fun game, unrewarding and honestly now worth the money even on sale. I hope at some point the Devs realize that no one want to spend 8 hours searching for things to just die to over powered NPC and animals!

Ugh i so badly want to love this game, building is fun but so damn grindy, honestly too much grind its off putting especially when nearly everything is so expensive to make and then you have wildlife at every corner trying to kill you. Games being difficult is fun, but not when its too much grind and too difficult, Not a good combo imo. I really hope this game makes some changes and evolves. Visually appealing for an early access game, the AI needs allot of work visually though. they look for weird and clunky like im playing a shooter game from the 90's its weird.
Cant say anything about multiplayer because im a pussy and dont feel like having to look out for players, animals and the hunters lol

Im going to keep my eye on this for updates though. promising for sure

Incredibly difficult at some points but the ambiance is amazing. From the peaceful mornings chopping wood while a stream gurgles in the background to the intense run when you accidentally aggro a bear and you can hear its footsteps getting closer, the game does an amazing job at immersing you and investing you into your character. The hunters are pretty cool too. They make you feel like you aren't playing alone and that there is always a threat no matter how powerful you become.

So what is subsistence? Well, it is described as a sandbox open-world survival game.
It is published and developed by ColdGames and is available on steam early access, as a first-person shooter and can be played either solo or co-op.
Your character spawns in a large contained area which includes lakes, streams and mountains and appears to be based in Canada.
There is no storyline as to why you are there or quests to complete or even really an end game. It is all about survival.
On top of the aggressive wildlife of bears, cougars and wolves with moose adding further threat during the rutting season, there are AI hunters that you have to compete against once your base has the BCU (Base Control Unit) installed.

When setting up a game there are various options which include turning the hunters off (highly recommended for new players) or toning down the hunter’s aggression along with settings for the time of year to begin the game and how many in-game days make an in-game month.
All of these settings are straightforward so it is very easy to set up a single-player game.
On the downside, the Co-op feature is not easy at all and does need work and technical knowhow to get a reliable game where all can join started.
This quite often involves having to use third party programs such as Hamachi or Team View.
As this game is early access the Devs should fix this in time.
Another issue is with the game timing.
The default is two days equal a month so 24 days is a full year, this can be increased significantly, however, this creates more problems.
In the default setting 24 days being all four seasons does not give the player a chance to get a base built, food stored, warmth and clothing sorted before the cold lean months set in.
If you extend the number of days per month your character still runs out of food at the default rate, not a slower rate so you are constantly hungry, hunting or foraging.
Again this should be balanced by the Devs in the future. So when finally starting a game the first thing you notice is the graphics.
This game only requires DX 9 and plays on cards manufactured 10 years ago.
The graphics are stunning, water and foliage textures are fantastic surpassing a lot of current games that need higher spec machines.
Frame rates are high even on low-end PC’s.
The next thing is that the wildlife in the game hates you. Rabbits, chickens and deer will leave you alone and often run away whilst bears, wolves and cougars give you a one vocal warning and if you don’t leave fast enough they’ll have you for dinner.

Subsistence also splits dietary needs into protein, hydration and fruits+vegetables.
Until you can begin farming and crafting weapons you pretty much live off tree grubs and water weeds with the added problem of all water need to be boiled.
Hunger is a big issue and can take new attempts at games before you find an area which allows fairly easy harvesting leaving enough time to build.
Other than chickens and rabbits all other animals take multiple hits with bow or gun to kill and ammunition is scarce at the beginning so fishing is the most reliable way of keeping protein up. Of course, fishing takes time and you can`t build your base whilst fishing.
Nighttime can cause problems with temperature especially outside of the summer months so the need for fire building and fire-starting materials become essential early on.
So far this would appear to be a very negative review on the contrary the problems encountered make the game more challenging and more rewarding when you succeed.
Balancing does need to be done but again this is early access.

Now for the really good points. Firstly you do not deforest the neighbourhood to get wood.
Depending on the type of tree you get a certain amount of wood per tree which respawns over time so there is never a shortage.
There are random spawns of crates and bags that supply crafting materials, food, ammunition etc which can keep you going.
Also, some crates are locked these contain much more advanced materials or even weapons and can be accessed once you build lock picks.
The crafting menu is straight forward with the beauty of the player setting up a list of tasks to do, make planks or walls whilst the character can still run around hunting and gathering more resources and the tasks complete in the background. This does save time.
If you can find a good location and survive the first few days it does become easier however, in this game never expect an abundance of resources.

Sustenance is currently available on Steam as early access with the potential shown already in the current builds it is well worth the current price and will most likely cost a lot more when complete.
So if you like hardcore survival games where everything is a struggle then this game is for you.

The first couple of hours were filled with rage quitting and anger. THIS GAME IS HARD ON THE EASIEST SETTINGS. But my most recent play through I decided to play it smart and take my time with it and figure out the best ways to play. This game slowly has become a new favourite and I loose track of time quickly with it. 8/10

So, I game to have fun. If I'm not enjoying the experience, it's not fun. I did not enjoy this experience. I love survival games, have thousands of hours in other survival games. However, even on the easiest settings, which I always start with so I can get familiar with the world, the controls, and how it plays, it just was not fun. So, for me, and I'm not saying that everyone may find this game a bit over the top, but, my experience was not positive in any way at all. The world was lovely, the storms, especially, were nice. Looting, the build menu, the plethora of aggro creatures and, most especially, the respawn after death where you end up gods-know-where and your stuff is going to despawn in 15 min... Seriously... NOTHING about that was fun. It's bought now, though, so, maybe with future updates? Who knows. If it changes and I do manage to enjoy it, I'll change my opinion. I'm female and it's my genetic right to change my mind at any time for any reason. So.. there.

7/10.

Excellent game, though I would change a few things. The timer to get to your body once you respawn needs to either be longer or removed all together. The animal that kills you, when you have higher tier gear, has now leveled up and is still camping the corpse. Meaning if I couldn't kill it WITH my gear, not having any gear and rushing from the other side of the world to get my stuff is impossible. This is a massive setback to the games potential, and is quite rage inducing when you lose so much you have worked for because you die 12 times to the same mob.

That is the only problem I have with the game, but it is a big enough problem it's worth a 3 point deduction. I strongly recommend the dev's change this, and quickly. This will deter a lot of people from continuing to play passed their first couple of deaths.

My recommendation would be to simply remove the corpse despawn timer all together, or make sure that the animal A.I. patrols far enough away from the body that it is actually possible to gather your stuff (and even then, increase the length of the timer drastically, as the random respawns more often than not spawn you too far to actually get there in time).

Great game, but I can't rightfully recommend this to people until this is changed.

I'm not really sure which direction to take this review but I feel that after 33 hours played in a just two weeks, I can put together my thoughts on this game.
It could be a great game for sure but I feel is missing something and doesn't implement things as well as they could be.
Let's start with what I see as positives.
- Good basic survival game that doesn't follow the zombie trends.
- Some of the best base building I've seen in a game
- Lot's of things to craft
- A good focus on survival

Now some negatives
- Very grindy
- Food is a bit silly. I can eat 2 rabbits in the morning and by evening time I'm dying of hunger
- Gun mechanics are awful and ammo is way too hard to get hold of
- Pistol is about as useful as a BB gun.
- Enemy AI is silly
- Some items take so long to obtain or craft due to slow electricity and mass usage
- Very little long term playability which I will explain below

The first few days are great! There's a real element to survival! Getting some food and getting a camp fire down is so exciting. Discovering the map and slowly crafting a base and stockpiling items is fun. Then once you have a base you can craft more items and upgrade the base or expand.
But after about a week, I have a cool base, I have crafted everything but I just can't see a point of carrying on. Every day I hop on to gather resources but I don't know what for. Nothing much is going to change. I have raided enemies based to get only very slim supplies. I have survived a winter. I have explored the entire map. I don't really care to go down to the caves because the grind to get the materials to do so doesn't seem worth the payout to go down to some caves where there are crystals to gather (not much point in them) and difficult enemies who only drop very poor loot.
I have absolutely plastered my base with wind turbines and solar panels which took HOURS of grinding, to see barely any reward as the electricity it produces is next to nothing.
There are so many things in this game which such a poor pay off that it doesn't seem worth it.
I enjoyed my time but I feel like it's slightly wasted due to no real thought being put into what is going to keep players once they have a basic base down.
I very much appreciate ColdGames effort in making this though.

I've played and sunk many many good hours into this game and i can tell you that its a good buy. You will enjoy it if you like survival games period.

I will have to add though that there are many balance issues that make it feel broken, and tiring after awhile. I'm sorry if this constitutes as SPOILERS so dont read if youre not interested.

1.) You basically have no chance against animals unless youre cheesing of mechanics. e,g Youre on a cliff shooting arrows and the bear/wolf that repeatedly jerks itself around the bottom soaks up your arrows. The animals kill you in two hits. The lowest level wolf needs 3 arrows. Usually by the time you take out your 2nd arrow the wolf is right in front of you so you go back to your cliff method anyway. That or cheese the HomeBase mechanics, making them run away whenever you reach back.

2.) Hunger. Someone mentioned that eating a piece of chicken barely filled the bar. I will have to agree. Food here is tough to get (completely reasonable), (but) your character simply burns through whatever you put into it way way wayyyy too fast. Whatever bonuses you get from eating food that are supposedly permanent are neligible and they disappear anyway the moment you die(which you will, plenty)

3.) Illness. I loved the aspect of the game where you got sick from not washing your hands(HUH I WONDER WHERE ELSE IVE HEARD THIS 2020). That being said illness in Subsistence is purely annoyance. The materials required to get said recovery takes a long time to gather. Now im not saying that this isnt fair, cos it is. Whats annoying is spending 1 to 2 hrs gathering said materials only to get infected again through cold/blood/accidentallydrinkingmyunheatedcanteen 2 seconds later. You cannot recover through death nor through a healthy diet or over time. Youre stuck requiring the mats.

4.) Hunters. Not much to say about this part as im sure its been mentioned plenty. You dont truly start the game till you get the hunters running. And the moment they do, they spawn with Shotguns and Rifles and Pistols that have near unlimited ammunition. Good luck with your wooden bow btw. Did i mention that they dont drop any of their weapons intact?

5.) Chests. To be honest i found this aspect debatable. I enjoyed the feeling of finding chests around the map as it provided a feeling of a jackpot whenever you found one. That being said, having one of your most important starting materials (N_ils) only show up in chests is once again, an annoyance. Not unfair, not unrealistic(as unrealistic as random spawning boxes may be), simply frustrating and annoying.

All in all i really enjoyed this game but there are parts in there that should really be improved. Till then ill stick to Medieval Fantasy where its slightly more balanced. Heres to hoping Early Access provides enough changes to make me return.

I wrote a long review with, what I thought, was good feedback on what would make the game better. But it seemed to auto-delete.

Take two.

Short Version: Buggy AI. Firearms are pointless. Resource nodes are scattered at random. AI spawns will spawn kill you. Play with a friend.

Would give thumbs up if the map were larger and the AI/resource spawning was fixed. Took 30 minutes to get a pistol and ammo, but would be better off still using an axe to kill predators.

Bears and wolves roaming the world like buffalo roamed the plains in the 1800s

I have to be honest here- this game is not for ragers. Playing in Subsistence takes a ton of patience AND practice. I'm still super new at this but I've got the gist of how everything works, and it is so much fun! There is so much to do and not enough daylight time to do it, kinda like real life. If you're into Minecraft meets ARK, this game is for you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Happy gaming!

Before I say anything, this game is good. It's fun, challenging, and it's even better with friends. I know it's an early access but there are a lot of things this game needs to work on.
Pros:
-Great Graphics
-Great optimization
-Smooth-ish controls
-Seemingly no connection problems
-Challenging but not too overkill
-Strictly Co-op/Solo (no annoying jackasses!)...(unless your friends are jackasses)
-Fairly easy to connect to a friend's server
-Fairly easy download (don't need to install 45 launchers)
Cons
-No tutorial (I had to use steam guides to figure out what I'm doing)
-Horrible hitboxes
-Axe doesn't do jack against anything
-Pistol doesn't do jack against anything
-Can't craft nails because for the love of god there are never any nails
-Did I mention horrible hitboxes? I'll hit a wolf with an axe and there'll be blood particles but no damage done.
-Hunters have every gun known to man
-The poison bug was not fixed (or I just get poisoned randomly and didn't know it?)

Overall
This game is good and in a stable position, but needs some fine tuning and polish to make it really good.
Subsistence has a lot of potential and could really take off if fixed correctly.

I want to like this game, I really do..........but.
The insane wildlife in this game ruins the experience. don't get me wrong but to say it is unbalanced is putting it lightly.
I like a challenge but i have yet to see a wolf or moose out swim at least a competent swimmer nor have I seen a chicken survive a 9mm round and sprint off like nothing happened. I have a very calm personality and rarely get overly angry but this game makes me want to toss a box of kittens into a chipper shredder..... and i love animals!!!
I gave it a shot, but i think it is destined to become a grayed out mistake that will populate my steam library.

This game has a lot of potential, just not really thought out well in some aspects.

The game has massive potential, but it also has some broken mechanics. The most obvious issue from day one is the amount of food that may be obtained from animals and the amount of resources needed to kill that animal.

The non-aggressive animals are pretty spot on. One (1) meat plus some extra items like feathers or cloth (not leather or hide?) Yup, the rabbits are made of cloth and the chickens have one (1) breast, not two (2). These small animals may be run down and caught or normally one arrow with kill or stun them.

Side note: I play game where the horses would give you chicken meat, but you got more off it! This concept of larger animal = more meat will become the topic here.

Moving up to wolves or deer, these take more arrows (resources) and time and they fight back!

But ya know what ya get? One (1) meat, maybe two (2). But wait! It is better meat! (It isn't that much better). And if you act now you can get a second one for free with shipping and handling.

So... Small animal - 1 arrow = 1 low grade meat (1). Ratio is 1 to 1.
But, Large animal - 5 arrows = 1 better meat (2) for sake of argument I will say its twice as good. Ratio is 5 to 2 .

I expended more resources (and risked my life or took damage even) for less return. If they ever balance (improve) the food system, I will be back. But until then, as much as I hate to do it, I must shelve it for now.

PostScript: I asked about this in the game Discord. According to them. It's Perfect. This is the way it should be. Hunt More.

This game is enjoyable and has promise - however, the absolutely ridiculous wildlife in this game mar the experience far too much. These problems are several fold. First - large game does not drop near enough meat. A bear or a boar drop a single item of meat, which cannot even feed you enough for a day. Either of these should be enough to feed someone enough for at least a week, let alone a day. I imagine this is to balance against the fact that there is an absolutely insane amount of wildlife in the game, which is the second problem.

It is impossible to go 50 feet without running into a bear or a wolf. They aren't too hard to avoid, but there is a stupid amount of them and they are exceedingly annoying to have to deal with when hunting other things. Most of the time, if you're hunting a deer, it will run into a wolf or a bear and then be killed by it, to despawn instantly (I imagine to simulate the predator having eaten the thing). In addition, there are far more predators then there are prey animals, which is completely ridiculous - the predators would starve to death within a month with this disparity.

Lastly, a lot of the wildlife is far too tanky. The bears are about right, but wolves, deer and boar don't have much less health than them, and all take upwards of 4-5 shots to kill. A single well placed shot should be capable of felling any of these things. This makes hunting almost a waste of resources - it is simpler to just make a bunch of fishing traps and put grubs in them so you aren't constantly losing nails, wood and other things.

While this game is fun in concept, I cannot possibly recommend anyone play it until A. The amount of meat from killing large game goes drastically up. B. The spawn rates for animals are drastically lowered and balanced towards more prey and less predators. And C. The less bulky animals are given more appropriate levels of health, and possibly a damage model introduced so chest/head shots deal significantly more damage than they currently do.

Game looks fine. However, you can feel that it was made only by a single person. After a while you realize that gameplay is monotonous and predictable. You can build your base or fight with a small number of animals. The fight is not thrilling and is rather boring after two or three encounters. Compared to other titles that are marked similar by Steam, this one has still a long way to go in order to become interesting.
If I could I would give it a neutral score but for now I don't recommend it.

I don't think I will request a refund but very basic foundation of a game. The balancing is absolutely terrible. Progression resources are scarce and animals are cheesy and overwhelming. Haven't gotten far enough to see how the hunters are. You start with a pistol with a 7 round clip. Look around and there are hardly any resources so you start to scavenge. You spot a wolf from the high ground and decide you need to eat. Getting off your first head shot it starts coming after you, you unload the 7 rounds on its head but its still half health and lunging at you. It hits you twice and you crumble. Now you spawn with no bullets. Good luck.

Have nearly 200 game based days and the grind is unreal. Trying to find cotton and gears will drive you insane. You can get cotton from npc's but then you need the gears to make door breachers to get into the bases to find the cotton. Maybe I'm doing wrong but I have killed so many hunters and stockpiled too much of everything else that it is now become boring and mundane, same process over and over again. You look at the vids with the game sponsers promoting the game with all the resources after 70 days and think WTF. Play the game RL and then make your call. Granted I have not tried all options (still to try grenades), but will give them a try tomorrow and see how they work on metal doors. Even if they work I dont have much faith in finding what I would like. Hoping it is not another Long Dark marathon, fingers crossed.

If these you enjoy survival crafting type games, this is well the the coin. I'm keen to see where the dev' takes this game in the future as I see a lot of potential just in my 40hrs. Here's hoping that it gains more Popularity.

I bought this game because it had very positive reviews. After playing for a little over an hour, I had to ask for a refund. The games difficulty scaling is through the roof, and it struggles to deliver anything in the way of fun.
Pros:
-the game looks nice
-the game runs smooth

Cons:
-lacks basic quality of life functions
-crafting system is annoying
-basic survival mechanics are needlessly difficult
-map is saturated with animals that will kill you, and sit on your corpse

I could probably add a few more things to the cons section, but I think they tie in with the things listed in a way. I understand this is an early access, but I can not for the life of me understand the positive reviews.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
While this game shows a lot of potential, it's just bad overall. the building requirements for items are too high compared to the amount of resources you can find, you do very little damage to everything meanwhile they do A LOT of damage to you, there are WAY too many hostile animals that it's near impossible to deal with them or try to walk around them. It's just bad, don't waste your time or money.

Great looking game graphics looks amazing and game play is smooth .
If you go on this game expecting it to be easy even on easy then your going to be so wrong this survival game is really hardcore survival game and is great fun to play on your own too it does have co op mode and multiplayer so plenty for everyone ...
You gotta collect plenty of wood and herbs keep your eyes out not everything is easy to see...
for the price the game is well worth it i'm so pleased i got it.

If you are a seasoned survival game player and looking for a fun challenge - this is your game. It is challenging and addictive. Maybe too difficult for the first time survivalist gamer. Try 7 days to die or The Forest as an entry point. if you can survive those games well, then you are ready for this challenge. Prepare to get your ass handed to you ... and love every second of it.

3 years later, predators still run (not swim) through the water to attack you.
Still waiting ...

Although the premise is good and the game is definitely improving there are to many things that make no sense. Shooting a moose with a rifle in the head 4 times and it still walks up to you to casually murder you is one of those points. Yes, I know it's a dangerous animal but it should not survive 4 bullets to its head, I'm not throwing paper bolts for godsake
Hunters that spot you and instantly one-shot you... Let me see what that guy is doing near that campfire I never saw before. I'm still pretty far away, there is really no chance *BOOM!*
The only thing missing is them running over, doing the Fortnite loser dance and teabag you. (I'm sure they are doing it at their stupid campfire though)

Collecting materials is a fun thing to do for the first couple of days. But because all the items you can craft require so much materials you are forced to spend every goddamn ingame day svavenging every nook and cranny of the area to try and find as much loot as possible. Every day, also on sunday.
Random placement of the various lootables makes it slightly different each day but it becomes a chore quickly.

Glad you finally crafted that bow so you can hunt and made 2 arrows? Well good luck, you won't hit a damn thing the first while until you learn how the bow with no aiming point works. And then either your arrow breaks because you hit a rock or it breaks because you hit a chicken. There is also a third option, you miss the shot and never find your arrow again beacuse you can't see it.
One chicken is not nearly enough to fill your protein bar so you better hope that you can kill more animals with the 2 arrows crafted from the single feather you get from a whole fracking chicken!
Don't shoot rabbits, fucking useless critters without feathers, waste of arrows.

The good thing about the game is that you can play it solo, so no random human douchebag will run by destroying all you made for fun like in other survival games or as I like to call them, asshole-simulators.
But have no fear, we have AI hunters and rogues with godlike aim who attack you during the night!
And just when you think that they aren't doing that much damage so you can just sit tight in your base and wait it out, since walking outside is a sure way to die, they toss a fucking bomb through your window! That window you build because of the awesome sun risings and other environmental shit will become your doom!
You can turn off the hunters though and just run around alone, with all the murderous animals, collecting loot forever and building your house forever so you can reach...nothing. There is no end game and no final goal.

The game starts of fun but the longer I play, the more the limitations show and strange design choices get on my nerves. Every major update I install the game again and play for a couple of hours. Stuff is added, things are polished and overall it's a much better game than it was when I bought it.
But at the same time it's still a chore.

This is an Amazing game!

I love survival games!
I moved from the Forest to this game (thanks Farket!) because that game is dead atm.
Def harder than the Forest but at the end of the day much more rewarding.

There is much more complex survival mechanics in this game and makes surviving so worth it.
Please note, you can enable attacks form the hunters, Revenge attack and no attacks.
If you are failing hard in the beginning, try no attacks. You will quickly get the hang of the game.

A great buy!

Really addictive game, but needs a creative mode where animals don't attack and collecting resources isn't such a grind.

There are a lot of good things about this game and there are a lot of bad.

The good: looks nice, good models, good animations, AI hunters, replenishing wood instead of chopping down trees, cheap price, amazing that one developer made it, gridless building

The bad: bear or wolf every 5 feet, bear or wolf can swim up and down underwater and never drown, millions of birds in the sky sharing the same animation. impossible to find cotton, no torches so you can see and stay warm, too few resources

I don't know what it is about this game, I absolutely love it. If someone were to ask me what's fun about it I wouldn't be able to tell you, it just is. This game is for very specific survival game lovers, I've bought this game for several people who also enjoy survival games and they've said they don't like it. I think I'm mostly impressed that this is made by one person, I've played survival games that are made by several people and it's no where as good as this. I will warn you though, there is a lot of looting/ farming to get anything, ammo is scarce early on and the hunter's aim is ridiculous. I don't play too much online, but from what I could see, the community is a whole lot more friendly/ helpful and far less toxic than rust's player base. Seriously though, just give the game a try if you like survival games, it's pretty cheap. ColdGames is a good Dev and their bigger updates always surprise me and I'm always excited to see what comes next. If you're reading this ColdGames, keep it up :D

Just way too bare and undeveloped right now. The wolves and bears are too common, they don't require contact with you to damage you so there's no dodging or outrunning them. The food doesn't provide enough sustenance, wolves provide as much food as a rabbit, you die from seemingly every tiny little thing. Fiber is unbelievably rare but a vital and much needed resource. You craft rifles and an actual M9 from wood and plant cord. It just goes on and on. It needs way more development to be enjoyable, and because it's one dev in his spare time, I don't see it getting there any time soon.

Amazing survival game with chill yet haunting atmosphere. You seriously feel alone and stranded and have to fight for your survival. Slow progress, so don't expect fast base building and grinding.
