Exploration is okay, pacing with regards to getting movement abilities is really bad. The worst part however are the badly balanced boss battles, some of whose designs can also only be described as sadistic. Stay away from this mess unless you hate yourself. There are plenty better Soulsvania games (Salt & Sanctuary, Blasphemous, Vigil, Unworthy to name a few).

I don't generally post reviews publicly but this game was so poor I felt like I should warn people away from it.
3000th Duel is a metroidvania with cheap-looking 3D game graphics, mediocre soundtrack, and downright poor game sound design.

The game mechanics range from unpolished to downright stupid:
- Dashing doesn't allow you to dash past enemies meaning tall game bosses effectively block the scene.
- Exiting any screen causes the game enemies to respawn.
- The above is compounded by the fact that game checkpoints are very few and the game player needs to backtrack to save the game and then fight the same enemies over and over.

Overall I'm starting to seriously mistrust Steam reviews cause I can't understand how this game has a 78% positive review rating since it's absolutely not worth it for the price.

Great indie metroidvania. Visible inspirations from Hollow knight, Bloodstained (SOTN), and Dark souls. It has focus on difficult boss battles, but toned down from what you would get in hollow knight. Although the controls are not as tight HK, which can make it not as fluid and finessed as HK boss fights.

Overall its an enjoyable game, with cool 3d models for the mobs and bosses. Great value for the hours to complete, with free end-game dlc and new game plus features as well.

2D souls-like for beginners.
That case when even indie looks better than some AAA project nowadays.
Seriously, I spent 15 hours on one walkthrough and didn't find any bugs or glitches. At all.
3000th duel resembles Salt&Sanctuary or Dark Devotion, but it's more friendly to a player. There is no violence, blood or any explicit stages also.
What do we have here? A lot of different locations and enemies, abilities and magic, bosses. There is also a good control with an xBox One gamepad.
The game has a free DLC, but I didn't find it)
Upd. Have found it.
I had a lot of fun from 3000th duel. Recommend to a buy if you like souls-games or if you want to get to know it.

Impressions so far..

Pleasantly surprised by this metroidvania. It's nicely polished and feature packed in the way of character customisable upgradability.

Spells, weapons, items, level ups, unlockable skill tree, weapon upgrades ,customisable stat upgrading. Combat is quite good with special moves, dash dodging with invisibility frames so you won't get hemmed in by bosses, also invincibility frames if you get hit.

Game character control is nice and tight, allowing for predictable platform jumping and dodging of enemy projectiles. You can also jump down ledges instead of having to jump off them to descend.

The view can also be moved up and down so you can usually tell if you want to jump down a cliff or ledge instead of blindly jumping and falling onto spikes, etc.

Plus, it has a great map feature where you can add as many markers as you want, wherever you want. Nice distance to save points.

Enemies have more health than you might be use to handling. But you could upgrade your stats to counter that. Although, some will use the extra time involved to hone their skills and patience.

If you leave an area and then return, it looks like enemies will respawn.

Ive given 18 hours of my life to this thing but I cant in good faith recommend it.

I have played and finished Dark souls 1-3, salt & sanctuary, vigil the longest night, furi, dark devotion, blasphemous, code vein, Doom on ultra violence, rogue legacy among others.
Why am i telling you this? to show you im no skrub and dont need to git gud.

The clunk in this game is unfucking real and it feels as if you have some input lag, leveling up yield pitiful returns lategame and there are a lot of hidden mechanics and obtuse save/port on the map.

But worst of all the arbitrary bullshit the game plasters you with, it has to be the sacred dash mechanic, in any other games of the genre the dash can be relied to give you some invulnerability frames and save your hide if you carefully but strategically time it to trade your diminishing stamina for blows that would kill you.
Im sorry to say the dash is fucking busted in this game, sometimes it works, often when bosses get their red eyes super ultra buff it doesnt and dashing through them gets you knocked because fuck you thats why.

For the same price you can get games like vagrant, vigil longest night, dark devotion, blaster master, hollow knight (i didnt finish that crap but people seem to like it) but this thing is super clunky and an experiment in frustration rather than risk reward, if the controls were a bit sharper and the mechanics more reliable then maybe but life is too short and my backlog too long to waste anymore in this piece of crap.

The controls feel clunky, regular enemies deal HUGE amounts of damage while even though ive leveled up quite a bit and allocate points to defense (and strength) does very little. Leveling up itself feels like a waste since youre pretty much underpowered and even regular enemies will take lots of hits to kill but can kill you in 3 or 4 hits. Also, using the health replenishment that you get early on isnt instant- your character does a small animation before your health is replenished and youre frozen in place, but enemies can move around freely and hit you which is fucking stupid. If you go to the inventory menu and select a health potion the menu will exit and then you get the health potion instead of just healing you in menu as well. The worst part is that bosses that can literally move into the walls, sit there and attack you while youre unable to do any damage at all.

GREAT little gem of a game. Not as fast paced as many other metriodvania/souls like games but still a lot of fun. Granted, some of the areas and bosses WILL PISS YOU OFF, but that comes with the territory.

Just not for me. I really tried. Here is the thing, it puts itself out there as a Souls-Like 2D platformer along the lines as Deaths Gambit, Blaphemous, or Hollow Knight. However, the controls never felt good to me. There is not a lot of character building, you get a weapon and you just go with it and none of it felt good, especially the dodging or the hit boxes. I never knew if I was going to get when sliding through an attack or not, it never seemed consistent. I would not recommend for any Souls or Souls-Like fans. Oh yeah, the story is pretty much non-existent. Rating 5/10

Eh - its OK.
I got it on special for 8$, and still - refunded it. I can't really pinpoint why exactly, because I like metroidvanias and I like combat that borrows from Soulsbornes. Graphics are OK. Upgrade tree seems OK. There seems to be crafting in the game (didn't play that long to find out).

Thing is - overall, its just lacking. Controls don't feel as smooth as I'd like, and its much, much slower/sluggier than I'm used to. It also has slightly weird jump height vs. unreachable platforms - you end up feeling like you can jump up there, but just because your feet don't reach high enough - you can't. I guess you can get used to this?
While graphics are OK, they are _just_ OK, nothing to write home about. Background music I don't even remember.

There's a probability that I'd get attached after playing longer, but I read some other reviews with higher playtimes, and they all share my sentiments.

If I didn't have better games to play (eg. Vigil The Longest Night), I'd probably give it a go, but the way things are - it just isn't good enough title for me to spend time on.

first 20 hours: fun platformer/action slasher. hilariously translation. progression, challenge all very recomendable

the last 10 hours: utterly moronic boss fight. the usual 'lets regurigitate all previous bosses before the final boss' is forgivable. the last one just isn't relevant. more attack types and phases than the last three combined - which would be a good thing if they were fun. They aren't. unless a tiny target ejaculating stupid amounts of bullet hell is fun for you.

the game contains an achievement for beating bosses without getting hit. it's not an achievement - its a requirement. At best you can take only a few hits, so if you put more than 10% of your level ups into health you are up for a lategame grindfest

My first impressions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL4YCwbfaBI

TL;DR:

Pros:

  • + Good Platforming, fun map traversal
  • + Wide variety of skills and ways to upgrade your character
  • + Souls-like aspects
  • + Huge free DLC

Cons:

  • - Combat lacks fluidity
  • - Boring Story

The game overall is actually pretty decent, the controls feel responsive and the platforming in general is fairly engaging.
Mix this up with a few puzzles here and there and a mostly competent combat system, sprinkled with some soulslike aspects and you have a good game.
The only real problem I have with it, is that the Combat lacks fluidity due to short repetive attack strings that dont flow well into one another and the rather boring narrative.
But, If you're starving for a new Metroidvania, you can definitely make worse choices than 3000th Duel and there is also a huge DLC available for free already. So you're getting quite a bit of content here for the rather reasonable price.

3000th duel is a good metroidvania game.
You can expect about 15-20 hrs if you're not speedrunning it and trying to explore as much as possible, but it's a ton of fun.

3000th Duel is an indie metroidvania with 3d-graphics, somehow reminding me of FF4 Remastered. It sports a decent progression system, although I expected more weapon variety. Combat is slow, uses stamina and rewards active evading. At times, the controls feel a bit floaty. Stat points can be placed manually so choose your prefered playstlye and build your character accordingly. A dark story, occult spells, small riddles and traps et voila - you got yourself a surprisingly entertaining game.

A kind of decent Metroidvania with some light Dark Souls -esque elements (healing item that refills itself at save points, collected currency is dropped when killed but can be recovered). It took me 15 hours to finish the game with 100% map discovery. Attacking isn't limited by stamina so you can hack away more freely, but stamina is still present and used to limit dashing. Attacking also interrupts stamina recovery, so especially in boss fights an attack rhythm that allows one to regenerate stamina often is usually a good idea.

And boy does this game have boss fights! I think there was 18 of them? That's a pretty good hours played/bosses killed ratio. None were terribly difficult and most of the attacks are telegraphed, so they can be learned through repetition. I think the most attempts I had to do on a single boss was around 10.

Some variation can be had in the character build, but it's a bit limited thanks to the way the skill tree works. There's quite a lot of skills there's just no way to avoid taking. Currency can be spent either on improving the four stats (HP, Attack, Magic, Stamina), buying things (from the one seller in the entire game) or upgrading weapons and spells.

I feel the weakest part of the game is the map. The size is fine (if a bit on the small side) and while the different areas do have a graphical style distinct from one another, the map geometry is boring. It's all right angles and flatness. There's not a single curve anywhere, not a gentle slope or an arcing path in sight. This makes the different areas feel repetitive and interchangeable - take the forest area's geometry, slap on a new coat of paint and it's indistinguishable from the dungeon area. The map also basically has no secrets to be found. Considering the inspiration the game takes from Metroidvanias and Dark Souls, both heavy with secret paths, areas and surprises, it felt odd playing an entry in the genre that's so forthcoming with its map and exploration.

The biggest surprise for me was how there's no New Game + mode, especially considering the not-really-a-surprise-twist ending, it would've fit thematically, and I wouldn't have minded extending my stay in the game's world a bit longer if I could carry my character progress and/or weapons over.

Overall though, I did like the game, but probably won't return to it again. Compared to something like Hollow Knight (a better Metroidvania) or Salt & Sanctuary (a better 2D Dark Souls) it falls short in every category, and considering either of those is just a little bit more expensive than 3000th Duel, I'd say wait for a sale.

You don't see many 2d metroidvanias with souls-like elements but 3000th duel is here to prove that the genre is capable of a lot.

There seems to be an unavoidable trade off with indie metroidvanias these days. The well made ones with engrossing combat are way too short to even entertain, and the ones with actual length have issues elsewhere.

This is definitely the latter. It's rough around the edges and lacking combat wise, but it has a nice length and Metroidvania feel. Could've been better, but for the price, I'm happy with it

Fun metroidvania exploration, weapons, accessories, levelling, and abilities (even if they're spread rather thin). I like the upgrade tree and the mortal blow system. The aesthetic style is charming and reminds me a bit of Legend of Zelda/Final Fantasy IV for the DS.

However, the fun of the game is kinda spoiled by frustrating boss encounters.

While no stranger to souls-like combat, 3000th Duel has boss enemies with ridiculous reach, that deal contact damage despite your dash iframes, that can turn around mid-attack... these are things that I dislike intently. The difficulty curve is less of a curve and more of a maelstrom.

Still, I've had a good time with the non-boss sections of the game, enough to recommend it!

If you like metroidvania or souls-like, you will love 3000th duel. It's perfect blend of metroidvania and souls-like.
Not too easy but not insanely hard. It's challenging at the right amount. You will die a lot on boss fights. Learning enemies attack patterns are key to winning these fights.

A definite recommendation for any metroidvania or souls-like fan.
