Über das Spiel

Across the Grooves is an interactive graphic novel, set in a magical-realism universe. Your decisions affect the destiny of Alice, drastically changing her reality and allowing her to explore alternative destinies by modifying her past.

Alice lives an uneventful life. She’s in a long term relationship, has a stable office job and a nice apartment in the center of Bordeaux. One day, Ulysse, her ex-lover, comes back into her life through an old vinyl record she receives in the mail. When she puts it for a spin on turntable, she is thrown back into her own past, forced to relive old events. When she comes back to the present, her reality has changed.

Determined to bring her life back on track, Alice packs up and embarks on a hunt across Europe, following the tracks of Ulysse while trying to uncover the origins of the record. However, her journey gradually turns into a quest of self-discovery as she explores new parallel realities each time she puts the needle in the groove.
 • A hand-crafted adventure — With each playthrough, discover a novel-sized adventure and a slice of the hundreds of hand-drawn images created for the game.
 • Every choice matters — Each decision you make slightly alters the personality of the main character, Alice.
 • An invitation to travel — Feel the pulse of European cities, meet colourful characters and solve the mystery, all depicted in gorgeous European comic book art style.
 • Immersive and finely crafted soundtrack — The music adapts and shifts according to your choices and the mood of each scene.
 • High replayability — Choose Alice’s fate and discover the outcome of your decisions through multiple story paths and endings.

What I love:
Art style. At the very least it's something different. Beautifully drawn.
Sound. Background sounds are some of the best I've ever heard.
Feelings. Although I can't explain a lot of what's going on in the game it always made me feel something. It might have even help me make an important life decision of my own.

What I don't like.
It's not voiced. As someone who like's visual novels partly because of a difficulty focusing, fully voiced visuals are superior.
Plot. The plot goes in all kinds of directions and I couldn't explain it to you if I wanted to. On one hand I would like to replay to understand it better but at the same time I don't want to ruin the experience I've had, often these things are best left the way they are.

Middle ground
Choices. It certainly feels like the story could have gone in many different directions depending on my choices. I cannot confirm nor deny this however since I've only played once.

It's a VN that took me less than 3 hours for one playthrough. It has nice artwork and the music is okay. I'm not sure the choices really matter and what I mean by that is that I was never faced with a question with a true moral dilemma. The choices are more like should I go left or should I go right. So you make a choice and live with the pre-determined outcome.

It's nicely written story, but it is lacking depth. The characters are one-dimensional for the most part. The story is weird, but it doesn't really have any serious questions about the topic matter of time travel and changing the past. Stuff just seems to happen. Again, it's not a bad supernatural VN, it's just not great. I'm not sure it's worth it at the normal price.

This is a very tepid recommendation if you enjoy VNs. There are much worse VNs on Steam and this is very similar to Along the Edge if you liked that one from this same developer. I think the story in Along the Edge was more gripping, but the artwork / music is better in this one.

Not my favorite game by Nova-box. I thought the premise sounded interesting, and at first it was, but it quickly grew obvious that Alice has her own motivations regardless of your choices for her. For example, from the moment the game started, I wanted to help her get her life back: cushy job, handsome fiance', but there is no ending in the game for that. I played and played, getting several endings, until I realized that there is no way to have Alice end up returning to her previous life. Never does she indicate she was unhappy--she just seems to forget about the man she was engaged to in her quest to find her elusive ex. It just seems like a huge oversight to leave this path out.

For a game about music, I didn't think the songs were very good. I wanted to like the music better, especially since it changes depending on how Alice looks. However, it felt like the tune and the vocals were not in-sync--like they were playing two different songs. As a result the songs aren't very catchy at best, and annoying at worst. Because of the accents of the singers, I wondered if the songs wouldn't have been better in their native language, so we could hear them as originally intended, but I couldn't find an option to do that.

I'd recommend any of their other games, but not this one.

That's quite the improvement over Along The Edge,
Still not very long but with more replayability,
The art direction is stellar.
Finishing it left me in an state of profund melancholy, even more so than their last two games.

The addition of the sung moments is a great idea, but the lyrics are so... dull ?
I just can't get my head around it, they're just so bland and random.
Feels like a real missed opportunity to me.

But this is otherwise a very good visual novel, almost clean of its predecessor's defaults.

“Across the Grooves” is a very loveable visual novel about time-travel, music, relationships, alternate realities and fashion. I liked the story about the mystical record that literally changes their listener’s lives and the way my choices influenced the game’ s look and soundtrack. If you are into mystical stories and music like Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Led Zep, folk music and obscure psychedelic bands from the 60’s and 70’s you should easily love this game. I only wished that the soundtrack had actually included songs from those bands I mentioned before, but I guess that would have overstretches the budget.

So far I played the game 4 times and every time I discovered new scenes and dialogue which gives the game a high replay value. A clever visual novel like “Across the Grooves” makes you realise that this genre offers incredibly creative ways of story-telling. Thank you, Nova-box!

A beautifully made Visual Novel game. The first thing that caught my attention is the artwork, but after playing the game I found many other interesting aspects. The story is about Alice, a young woman who works in a bank and has a loving boyfriend. One day she received a mysterious package from her ex-boyfriend Ulysse who she hadn't heard about ever since their separation three years ago. Inside that package, there is an old vinyl record that changed her life upside down. Will she accept the changes in her life or she'll try to bring her old life back? This is all up to you. The game has eight endings and all choices have consequences.

The music is unique, the lyrics change depending on your choices, the track is really nice. The story has six chapters and it took me around 8 hours to finish them all. Alice's personality can change depends on your choices and her look in the alternative universe is depending on your choices.

There is a log section that keeps a history of all the choices you took and the conversations you had throughout your journey. I wished there is a section where we can access the beautiful artwork, characters profiles, and pretty landscapes. The game is not voiced. I liked the in-game achievements showcase, it looks so pretty.

Pros:
+Interesting story.
+Choices and consequences.
+Beautiful soundtracks.
+Beautiful character design.
+Nice character development.
+Good game length.
+Multiple endings and routes. (Total of 8 endings)
+Steam achievements.

Cons:
- There is no in-game section to the artwork.

The beginning of the game was very interesting but then it took a different route which I don't mind, but I didn't expect the story to be like this. All in all, this is a very enjoyable game with pretty artwork and beautiful music, I highly recommend it.

An ambitious work that stretches the envelope on VN games. The fact that the Record's music changes according to your choices really put me into the moment when my character was playing it. The art is still that sketch-book style that I loved in Along the Edge, the story hits some of the same beats, you can choose the MCs main character traits through her answers which eventually influences her destiny and even her appearance.

If you liked Along the Edge, definitely give it a shot, though I can't promise you'll love it. The story is broader in scope. Along the Edge focused on one small town and a set of a few characters, this game spans several major European cities and quite a larger cast. Where Along the Edge stayed with its story, this game occasionally lets secondary and tertiary characters go into flashbacks which are necessary to set the tone - this is all about changing your past and seeing how it effects you in the present - but not always necessary to the plot. In Along the Edge, you had tight control over the MC and her direction, and she took a lot of agency in her own story. Alice, the MC in this game, is one player among many in a much larger story than her own. It's a different style, a different approach, and I find them both valid and interesting, but it might turn some players off.

Personally I think I like Along the Edge just a bit more, because its tight focus left me feeling deeply in control and connected to the MC, I could feel HER, her choices and her pain, and her victory at her own hands and resulting from her character and choices (well, my choices, but you know what I mean) was memorable. Alice is a good character, but the very nature of the game means that her self shifts several times during the story, and... I don't know, with Alice, we go further but we see a bit less, we connect a bit less. Still, her story is interesting, and I love the concept. In fact, I would love to see this a TV series based on this, where we could better explore who Alice is, who she becomes each time she listens to the record, what changed exactly, what did not change (how much of our self is truly US and how much is due to the events, large and small, in our life...?), and I would LOVE to also have flashbacks and episodes exploring other characters such as those we find in Prague, for eg. Well, as you can see, this story had me thinking about it and speculating and wishing I could know more about the characters, and that's always a good sign for a VN. Thumbs up.

Buy Along the Edge instead

I loved Along the Edge. Across the Grooves is somewhat of a remake of that game and has great visuals, characters and sometimes dialogues. However I disliked some new aspects that featured majorly in this game:
1, A more overt supernatural, an organised cult focusing on the supernatural
2, Time travel, meaning you meet different versions of people from different timelines
3, The history of 20th-century music

If these aspects are something you're actively seeking you might be right to consider this game more highly. If not, I would suggest playing Along the Edge instead and buying this if you want more of something similar.

As a person who’ve played all Nova-box games, I must say Across the Grooves is the most polished of their creations. It applies to the storytelling aspect, as well as to art and music quality. I think, Across the Grooves tends to be more like an Along the Edge’s spiritual successor, and the developers have managed to achieve it. No, not even that – they even surpassed Along the Edge.
Across the Grooves’ page description indicates it’s magical realism, however, in my opinion, the story has more of urban fantasy vibe – a scriptwriter tries to explain how mysterious record works, instead of just leaving it completely unexplained how it’s usually done in magical realism genre.
As an Along the Edge successor, Across the Grooves has mysteries, cults, choices that affects your character’s outfit and way of life and, of course, a strong female lead. This time we’re playing as Alice – an old friend of
Frank and Daphne from Along the Edge
who receives a mysterious record from her ex-boyfriend which allows her travel back in time and make small changes here and there, shaping a different present. Overwhelmed by sudden and drastic changes in her surroundings after listening the record for the first time, Alice decides to find the ex and figure out why he send her the record, as well as what dangerous and incredible powers it possesses.

Pros
+ truly interesting story full of mysteries, well-written characters, few unexpected twists and memorable moments.
+ lots and lots of illustrations. The game doesn’t have sprites but tons and tons of beautiful CGs.
+ your choices do matters. They shape Alice, her appearance and way of life. The game does have big variety of different clothes for the main heroine, depending on your choices. And yeah, it’s not always obvious, unless you made different choices during your second/third playthrough and remember how Alice was dressed during your previous game session.
+ nice variety of love interests.
+ epic songs which change its genre and rhythm based on your choices and Alice personality.
+
Along the Edge easter eggs. Huge and fat easter eggs.
Cons
- even though Alice storyline feels complete, the cult’s one doesn’t. Even though it’s supposed to be a threat, the organization doesn’t do much during the course of the story. More like menacingly existing from the distant.
- the game’s story structure doesn’t shaped in the way that every new ending reveals additional important information. Once you’ve played 1-2 times, everything becomes more or less clear, and it turns into simple achievement hunting.
- Alice is in complete control of the script and your dialogue choices, meaning you can’t fully shape her as a different personality. She won’t act very differently in various playthroughs and won’t suddenly do different things or disobey you. So, you’re mostly shaping her music taste, fashion style and some little bits of biography. It’s more of a limited roleplaying than full-fledged personality simulator.

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy set in European setting and also like games about music and with limited but meaningful choices and consequences, I encourage you to play it.

If you're a fan of Nova-box, then you should already be on top of this. If not, this is a wonderfully wistful visual novel with amazing art and fantastic music that is well worth every replay.
I got a smug, hipster-esc sense of superiority every time I caught a music reference, and learned something when I didn't, and I've only played the game through twice.
If you like visual novels, play this game.
If you don't like the idea of a 'bad ending', play this game.
If you're a vintage music fan, play this game.
If you'd like a game with a gouache art style and a choose-your-own soundtrack, play this game.
You won't regret it.

I definitely recommend for anyone that loved along the edge to buy this game immediately. There's even a character form that game in this one. In this game to your identity changes depending on what choices you made.
In this game your ex sends you a vinyl that takes you back in the past, and it changes Alice's future. Hoping to either bringing her old reality back or finding her ex, it sends Alice through France, England, and Scotland to find out what happened to her ex and the powers of the record. At the same time Alice must hide the record from people that want it because it's a magical record, of course people are going to want to change their past!

A visual novel which lets you make choices that change the story. An interesting concept of going back in time to change the past through music. It had some grammatical errors here and there. Definitely enjoyed the journey, would recommend.
