Amnesia: The Bunker Review - A Claustrophobic Horror Gem
Horror games often take you on sprawling journeys filled with dark secrets and terrifying foes. But sometimes, a compact, focused experience can pack just as much punch, if not more. Enter "Amnesia: The Bunker," a refreshing addition to the classic Amnesia series that serves up a grim and intense bottle episode of horror. In this installment, you step into the shoes of Henri, a soldier who narrowly escapes death during World War I only to find himself trapped in an eerie underground bunker. As the player, you grapple with the horrors lurking in the shadows while piecing together a spine-chilling narrative. What sets "The Bunker" apart is its intimate, claustrophobic setting. You'll spend 4-6 gripping hours navigating the maze-like tunnels of the bunker, clutching a dim torch, and uncovering unhinged diary entries left behind by doomed French soldiers. The atmosphere is palpable, and the tension is relentless. Unlike previous Amnesia games, here you're not just a helpless victim. You start with a pistol and later acquire a shotgun, albeit with limited ammo. Additionally, you can scavenge flares, grenades, med packs, and crucially, petrol to power a central generator that serves as your mission hub. The game unfolds in a semi-Metroidvania style, with access to deeper areas of the bunker opening up gradually. What's particularly clever is how "The Bunker" balances safety and danger. You might master parts of the bunker, but failure to monitor your resources and the ever-precious light can lead to sudden, heart-pounding encounters with the unkillable creature stalking you through the tunnels. The unpredictability keeps you on edge, and the sound design adds to the unease, making you question every creak and rustle. This Amnesia installment embraces immersive sim elements, shedding traditional HUD elements and map accessibility. You must learn the bunker's layout to solve puzzles and progress, and even photographs hold clues if you scrutinize them closely. Interactivity with the environment is enhanced, allowing you to manipulate objects to your advantage. The game encourages creative problem-solving, such as using cinderblocks to force doors open. Of course, reckless actions attract the monster's attention. You possess a noisy wind-up torch, which is vital for visibility but also serves as a dinner bell for your relentless pursuer. Crafting traps or hurling grenades become tactical choices, but they require a methodical, slow approach. The tension mounts the farther you venture from your safe room, especially when you encounter giant, flesh-eating rats with reflective eyes in your flashlight's beam. The focused design of "The Bunker" makes for a rewarding and tight-knit horror experience. It explores themes of war and humanity effectively, even if some elements might feel slightly overused. For newcomers to the Amnesia series, this could serve as an excellent introduction, offering an intense, dark horror experience that can be savored in a single afternoon. As a returning Frictional Games fan, "The Bunker" felt like a breath of fresh air. It reinvigorates a series that occasionally felt ponderous, delivering an imaginative and exciting addition. If this is a sign of what's to come from Frictional, we're eager to see more of their slightly more contained projects. Whether it's Amnesia or something entirely new, they've proven they can master the art of compact, terrifying horror.

The Experiment.
Experiment – is not just a call to action, but also a characteristic of the new Amnesia game. And this experiment proved to be a success. Impressions are relevant for the “Hard” level of difficulty. Amnesia: The Bunker is a brilliant survival-horror that takes place in the same unchanging location that is the title’s namesake. The main objective is to escape the bunker by removing different obstructions that are blocking the escape routes. Needless to say that the players can expect to run into a plethora of additional hurdles along the way before the salvation from this residence of evil is granted. There are multiple ways to solve the tasks that you receive, however the game doesn’t openly inform you about them, and instead encourages the experimentation by periodically reminding you of that. That’s where The Bunker’s main difference from the predecessors lies. This game as a part of the series has drastically changed its focus.Gameplay
It takes the spotlight here. Simply put, The Bunker is a series of sorties from the relatively safe hub area, which welcomes the player after the opening tutorial/prologue. It’s also the only place where you’re able to save your progress, as there are no auto saves in the game. You can also refuel the generator here, which powers the larger part of the bunker and temporarily lights the whole place up. It is essential to use the fuel efficiently in order to pull it off. Besides, at some points you’d be required to have some fuel on you to progress the story.Resource Management and Crafting
Efficient management of the findable resources (that include generator fuel) and also pathfinding are the fundamental skills and vital conditions for the proper perception of the game’s general concept. The thing is that the resources are rather scarce and the map browsing is only available in the hub area, which means that you would have rely entirely on your memory and the directional signs. Crafting is a simplistic system that allows you to combine items (or resources) into a new item, and also rarely combine the crafted items further. Nothing groundbreaking to be fair. It is important to note that this has never been characteristic of the series. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2986951316Narrative
Amnesia hasn’t lost its ground in the story and its presentation departments, it simply prioritized the gameplay, from where I stand. The traditional story of the series, that connects each part by the overarching ideas and plots, is still alive and kicking. The game has a scripted exposition, plot development, climax and finale. Soldiers’ notes expand on and further explain the occurring events, which is also quite typical for the series. The narrative component was allotted the least attention in this part of Amnesia.Suspense and Immersion
Thanks to the relative freedom of traversal, item crafting system, classic “tactile” physics, introduction of the mandatory meticulousness in the item interaction (such as reloading the revolver by inserting each bullet into the chambers of the cylinder one by one) and constant threat, personified by the monster, the immersion coupled with suspense have been elevated to never-before-seen heights. Such a cumulation has breathed new life into the transmission of suspense and intensity. Now the sense of anxiety is experienced not only upon hearing someone or something around the corner, but also in case you yank the flashlight too hard in attempts to turn it on when the generator runs out of fuel and the light goes out. As a result, each individual playthrough offers a slightly different experience, as all these anxiety-inducing moments stem from different sets of circumstances. This is why this entry is the scariest for me personally.Threat
The monster, that stalks the player, successfully creates the constant sense of tension, however its behavioral pattern becomes quite easily readable within a few hours. But it doesn’t make it any less of a pain in the ass, it just makes it more predictable rather. Though, since all the intense moments depend on the various circumstances, the monster by itself is not always the sole fear factor. For instance, being considerably far away from the safe room and having plenty of resources on hand are reason enough to feel anxiety, since there’s no option to save your progress and therefore any sort of mistake might waste a lot of time, resources and probably nerves. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2986951308Cons
Now it’s about time we listed theoretical problems that the players may face:- The aforementioned situation is literally what has happened to me a couple of times in my playthrough. Though, I was to blame in those situations I guess: sometimes I got too greedy, other times I was overly bold. In any case, a few dozens of minutes of progress can be lost, and I assume that this might not be up to everyone’s liking. Keep this in mind when choosing the level of difficulty.
- Even though the game reminds you to experiment with items and the usage thereof, some problems with logic may surface up in the process. For example, why can’t you blow up a gas tank by shooting it between the bars of a metal fence? There are no obstacles on the bullet’s trajectory. Yet, it doesn’t work, unfortunately.
- I wouldn’t say it’s a problem, however it would’ve been more comfortable and satisfying if you had been able to pick up those items that certainly can be combined with something the players already have in their possession, if the inventory is full.

Conclusion
Yes, this is a different Amnesia. More engaging, less story-oriented compared to the predecessors . For my personal taste – it’s fantastic. P.S. I want to clarify my stance on the retarded labels such as “this is a good horror game, but it’s an awful part of the Amnesia series”. Such a discourse simply should not exist, in my opinion. This conclusion is downright immature. The lack of sensible arguments and the reasoning, that was pulled out of the ass, completely devaluate such discussions. They don’t make any sense. This nonsense needs to fuсking stop. If you found this useful and enjoyed reading this, please leave a like and subscribe to my channels. Thank you. [list]
