Ein sehr tolles Spiel, mal was ganz anderes.

Almost 7 hours into the game and I still feel like I've done nothing. Insanely repetitive and slow, the entire game just feels like a chore. Not to mention the climbing and jumping from tree to tree is so janky it's just safer to walk around on the ground. Massive let down.

Really good exploration game, a game that makes you want to explore the world to see what's next, evolving and getting new skills to help you.
There is no mini map and there is no compass, which makes the uncertainty even more exciting.
Give this game a chance.

Not great at all. I played on the easiest option which promised a tutorial, which it did not deliver. After I figured out how to swing from the branches was the point a tutorial decided to pop up explaining how to swing from the branches. I just taught myself how to do this. Even knowing how to swing from the branches doesn't guarantee it will work anyway. I had a couple of apes fall right through the branches, stupidly not grabbing onto them and falling to their deaths.
I had my first 2 apes randomly lay down and die while climbing with no explanation as to why. Hunger? Thirst? Exhaustion? Ate the wrong food? No idea since the game leaves you in the dark. There's no hunger or thirst indicators so it could have been one or both of those. Or neither.
The first 20+ times I tried grooming it failed, again since there's no tutorial. I had to jump onto YouTube to find that there's supposed to be an audio cue telling you when to release the held button, but my game was apparently glitched and didn't have the cue. After a few restarts, a different cue randomly started working for it which was a green flash on screen. No idea why this new cue started working, but I assume the dodge mechanic uses similar audio cues since my ape didn't seem to be able to dodge attacks either.
This is the first game I have ever requested a refund for, but since I've played over the 2 hour limit, I may not get it. Fingers crossed.

I have mixed feelings about this game.
It is really a unique experience to play as our ancestors. I am a biologist so I can relate to.
Visual are great, mechanics are interesting, quite refreshing experience.
The game doesn't hold your hands what to do. In the beginning it's a bit confusing but hell, such is life. You really feel like a species struggling to survive.
But life finds a way, it's great when you trying to learn better to survive and have evolved better traits for survival.

Some mechanics are a little bit annoying. For example if you want to max out evolution traits, you actually want to NOT DO THINGS to speed up evolution. Very intuitive and and works against you. You basically have to literally kill your apes to get the pentalties so you don't leap too far in years, so you have more time to evolve traits.

At a later point it become very grindy and repetitive. I have to use cheat engine to speed up the game play and eventually I used a trainer. It feels to me the dev has bloated the mid to late game to increase the play hour. But it's just too much. If it could keep to the same pace when starting the game, it will be great.

In summary, it's a unique experience. Early game is great. Just until a certain point, don't try to grind. You are not rewarded for too many traits anyway. The end game and ending is a bit of a lackluster. Still recommend to try the game out.

(I got the game from a bundle)

It has been fun running around as killer monkey. But is tedious as f*ck, doing the same thing over and over again. But that's not it....no not at all. Devs say two things, we do not explain much, fine. But wait they do not explain sh*t at all,so you trying to figure out if it is a bug or that you missed something... And it's really 10/90 here. The second is , this game is best played with a controller....yes that is obvious, mouse control sometimes freaks out as f*ck. So twice lazy mtf devs...
But FF the game can be fun, yes it was certainly. But the game cheats more then mariokart.

On my first evolution, 3 tribe members where injured all the sudden and they died while watching the entrance/evolution scene. Fine I have saved it, and next time I skipped it. Called all the members...but those three where not even around the starting point. And within a minute the three women died...

Next tribe, went a bit better, came a bit further, out of the jungle into the savanna. But this tribe had other flaws, neurons, greyed out, losing their connection, without skipping a generation. Normal neurons, like switching hands...so another tribe useless.

Third try, done everything right, watched very closely on the neurons, made an assembly caveman line, for spear production, flints , meds, walls etc. I would evolve before heading into the savanna, but meteor dropped, so had to pick it up. There the mariokart horror began... about 16 buffalo's, 8 hyena's (2 packs) a black and 3 golden cats, jumped at me. It was literary 15 minutes of quick time event... Normally animals fight with each other, not this time. I lost 2 apes and 4 children during the dodge event, unable to break out of it and save them. So I headed back home with the last two kids. Hoping to replace the lost members, by moving or even skipping a generation. None...I searched the whole jungle, woodland and highlands twice before skipping, even after skipping I had only 2 apes and none appeared.

Last tribe, women do get laid but do not get pregnant, what a post second war bliss, 10 mil years too early. restart the game...indeed small bug, just wasted days getting pregnant, no biggie, I go on exploring and return to find my settlement empty, totally empty. The dots are there. Restart, nope saved, group call, none is following, maybe wrong place? (starting area) looked around none to be found...

I am bored now with this game, the effort is nice but it's shallow as the tears I cry for it, do everything 5 times at least while hoping there is not f*cking bug ruining your hours of gameplay

Panache Digital Games has created a truly immersive, lush environment that’s thrilling to explore and traverse. Utilizing our natural instincts for discovery is truly the most ingenious aspect of the game, as it rewards us for problem solving in ways that already come naturally to us. It’s such a gratifying experience to see our hominids start out with no understanding of the world, to then become fairly self-sustaining creatures thanks to education and discovery. More than anything, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey shows us what amazing creatures we truly are and how far we’ve come as a species. Understanding our past is the gateway to our future.

Looked great. Big world, felt like there was a lot to explore. However, it's a lot more shallow than it appears. Hardly anything useful to find, other than the same few materials found most anywhere.
Very interesting progression concept. But I grinded everything out, expecting to evolve even more and have much more than a bunch of basic survival upgrades. I was expecting to eventually be able to build structures and fires and such. There're stick barriers, which I never found a real use for. That's all you can build.
Crafting method is interesting, but I was disappointed to find out that there is hardly anything to craft. I had been just rolling with it for a long time expecting my capabilities to expand as I evolve. Nope. You can make sharp sticks and 3 different rock tools. that's about it.
The way the game ends is completely and utterly disappointing. The worst way to conclude anything.

Favorite part of the game was the first dozens of times I killed animals and the following celebrations, sometimes I couldn't help myself but celebrate along with them, return to monke. Those were some truly satisfying moments.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a difficult game to review. It is an audacious work of passion that stands out as something unique, but while I commend Panache Digital Games for taking such a risk and respect them for doing so, the final product is not something I can recommend in general.

Ancestors seeks to make the evolution of hominids, and how they survived (or did not), a playable experience. Rather than translating that into a more conventional game, with clear objectives, a story, and other common trappings, Panache Digital Games makes the game purposefully light on direction, to replicate the trial-and-error of learning. You are even warned as you begin that you will not be helped much, and this is not an exaggeration.

The basic gameplay loop is that you interact with the world, its flora and fauna, and the members of your clan, to learn, then apply this knowledge to your survival. For example, you do not automatically know whether that plant you grabbed will nourish or poison you, and the only way you will find out is by eating it and experiencing the results. While doing all of this, you need to survive by getting enough food and drink, sleep, and propagating your lineage. Of course, you also must avoid being eaten, falling to your death, or succumbing to poison, too.

As you explore the world you will gain upgrades via Neuronal Energy, and some of these will get passed down to the next generation if reinforced. Once you survive long enough, and have enough generations, you evolve and begin as the next step in our evolutionary history. Or, you die out and begin all over again.

The trouble is that while this starts out quite interesting, it soon gets very, very repetitive. While in the game you may need to discover something multiple times, due to dying out completely, you as a person can only discover something once. So, while discovering how what to eat and how to craft something is fun the first time, it gets less fun the more you need to do it.

The gameplay does not evolve nearly as much as you evolve, either. You will discover the bulk of what is unique within the first ten or so hours, depending on whether you thrive or die out, and after that it is more of the same. New evolutions do not bring much new gameplay.

It is challenging to categorise Ancestors. While it is a survival game, it is such a far cry from contemporaries that share the genre so as to render that label meaningless without context. It is definitely not for players who need objectives and some form of tangible progression or goals to be set and conquered.

I do hope the studio does something else, and that their next project is as ambitious as this one, but this freshman effort was just not something I enjoyed nor can recommend.

Ancestors is an incredible and unique game. I'm 10 hours in and have yet to pass a generation, but going from throwing branches around to having the entire pack sharpening spears in unison is a singular experience. I'm quite surprised by the amount of negative reviews with a single hour played. Seems like these people gave up early out of frustration, and ended up missing out on how fantastically the game opens up in its progression.

I highly recommend this, but there have been some bugs present. Be careful using mimic when grabbing resources on expeditions with the whole clan as they do tend to get stuck endlessly pathfinding, and looking upwards can sometimes present you with the insides of your ape's 3D model. The worst point was when I had already done some of the things that came up as objectives at a later point in the game, and they didn't register. I'm currently stuck looking for a recruit as they seem to now be hidden due to me hitting an arbitrary clan size limit too early.

Still, there's nothing else like Ancestors out there and it's really worth buying at full price. Love supporting experimental and great niche games like this.

This is not a game for the impatient, those who just want to get straight into the action or those who need clear goals and direction. It takes many hours to truly get a feel for and at first, it is extremely difficult - you and your tribe are a bit useless, you are a prey animal and everything will try to kill, injure or envenomate you. The last part doesn't change throughout the entire game, but as you unlock neurons and evolve, you will become far better at defence, attack, resource gathering, senses, production, social ties and more efficient with energy expenditure, so it becomes far less fraught.

I cannot stress enough that this will take time - many, many hours. If you do not like games that are slow paced with occasional (you hope) moments of life or death panic, this is not the game for you. If you do not like games that are repetitive (and I admit tediously so sometimes) and based on survival (you have to eat, sleep, drink and not over-stress yourself just like reality), do not bother. If you are looking for a game that will guide and tell you what to do, it is not worth your money. Also the save system, while I understand the idea behind it, is not very practical for real life. You can only save on a sleep spot, so if you have a time limit on your gaming you have to plan to be back at your base so you can do so.

If you *are* interested in the theme of the game and are willing to put in the time and push through the setbacks and challenges you will face, however, it's definitely worth a buy. The map is enormous, there's tonnes to explore and sometimes you just have to stop and marvel at the scenery (and hope nothing is stalking you as you do so). Personally I *love* the freedom of it all; I don't like games that try to shoehorn me down a particular path, I like being given the stage and left to do as I wish - this game is perfect for that. Once you've mastered combat and dodging you'll pretty much never die unless you run your ape into the ground or misjudge a jump, but the feeling of being alone at night and suddenly knowing there's a threat around still manages to give chills even now.

I certainly hope for a follow up or two to this game.

Not worth the price, probably worth 1/4 of the current price. Very limited amount of crafting options, lots of items do the same thing. The combat is basically just crafting a sharpened stick, holding space toward a predator and release when the screen flashes. Do this 3 or so times and the predator is dead, this goes for all the predators. The exploring and evolving is probably the only redeeming quality.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a rough game. The controls are awkward, the goals aren't clear, the story is minimal. Despite this, I found it fascinating and put almost 100 hours into it. The world is beautiful and surprising, and exploring it reminded me of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, though of course without the Nintendo polish. Without spoiling anything, you begin as a tree-dwelling ape and end up an upright, tool-using hominid, though the mechanics aren't always consistent. Swinging in the treetops was exhilarating and probably one of the better mechanics of the game, but one it explicitly pushed the player away from with the level design and the implication of becoming more human-like.

If the premise of this game is appealing to you, you should give it some time, but if you're not having fun by the time you're walking upright and fighting instead of running, you probably shouldn't play further

An incredibly unique and immersive survival game with a massive open world, mindblowing skill tree, solid dose of realism and a great sound design sadly brought down by the repetitive and fairly simplistic gameplay.

As interesting as it is to mimic a behavior our ancestors likely did themselves and to have this special window into what their daily lives looked like, at some point you're likely to lose the sense of wonder and the gameplay loop will instead start to feel like a chore. Sure, the vast world and different biomes do help a little bit in terms of diversifying the look of things, but nothing fundamentally changes.
What's not helping on the other hand is the very simple combat of either dodge or attack, which gets tiring really fast, no matter how good-looking the animations behind it are.

Yet I can't say I regret my time spent swinging in the trees, commanding the ape tribe around, exploring the huge skill tree, discovering mutations and making those tiny steps towards humanity. If that sounds interesting and there's possibly a discount, give it a try at least for the unique experience.

Tl;dr - Ancestors is like a white-washed tomb. Looks great on the surface, but inside it is hollow and filled with rot.

Ancestors is a confusing mess of great graphics, random experimentation, bad science, horrible controls, repetitive gameplay, and confusing objectives and HUD.

The game begins telling you it’s a true story, then completely fails to understand nature. After the introduction you are an adult ape, who doesn’t know how to eat, drink, sleep or procreate. You must “learn” what you can drink, and you are unable to sleep unless you make yourself a bed. How did you become an adult not already knowing these things? But wait, if you examine some water, you can learn it can be drunk. Then your neurological pathways will change your DNA so that your progeny will know they can also drink water?! My first ape almost died of exhaustion as he didn’t know how to sleep... how the #$@* did you make it to adulthood not knowing how to sleep?!

Ultimately this claim of “true story” points at the complete nonsense this game really is. At time of writing this, another review which solely states “reject humanity return to monkey” gets 946 helpful, 606 funny and 165 awards, it makes me wonder of the target audience for this game. Perhaps this whole game is meant as a joke?

There are two types of crafting/alchemy type games. Those that are objective-focused and those that are experiment-focused. The former tells you to make ice and gives you water and pressure which you must then combine. The later gives you no objective, but through random experimentation, and putting water and pressure together, congratulates you on your ingenuity of making ice. I love the former, and loathe the latter. Even with tutorial and HUD on max, I was still completely confused at what to do to “find a place to rest”. I searched everywhere and eventually succumbed to madness and fed myself to a crocodile. Looking on the internet, all I had to do was gather some leaves and put them in a pile... obviously this game is too cerebral for me. I managed a few more objectives, groomed a mate, but had no idea how to make a baby. My instinct told me we had to copulate, but, apparently, these animals don’t know how to do that.... (insert Picard facepalm here). I was then told to find a meteor. WHY?! HOW?! This was too much. I wasn’t planning on watching endless youtubes just to figure out where to go and how to solve what. That’s not exploration or discovery, its just aping what others before you have done! (pardon the pun)

I tried this game with mouse and keyboard combo, and also with gamepad. Both were unbearable. Hit X button/key, then hold this button/key, then this button/key... Meanwhile, just jump around, climb trees and cliff walls, and examine, then grab, then inspect, then use all the stuff you find. Just randomly do stuff until you unlock your next genetic trait... nonsensical, boring, repetitive.

The game looks good graphically, but the HUD is generally not explained and adds to the confusion. Ancestors is a mess of controls and ideas underneath an interesting concept and lush jungle graphics. A white-washed tomb.

This game is the perfect example of an interesting concept being executed with thought and care; resulting in an incredibly unique adventure experience.

Is this a game for everyone? No, it is not. However, if you enjoy games that involve exploration, experimentation and logical puzzle solving. You will definitely enjoy this game.

The core of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is that you are starting as our earliest ancestors and exploring, experimenting and evolving over millions of years until you eventually become the earliest relatives of HomoSapiens. The game doesn't hold your hand, you are responsible for learning the various actions and interactions with the world and the objects in it.

The game thrusts you into the same mindset of our early ancestors. You want to make a sharpened stick? Well, you are going to need to figure out the interactions required to do it. But you aren't done there, as you get more comfortable experimenting with interactions, you may find ways to refine the process and in doing so you will unlock the neuronal potential of your chimps. Essentially you are growing alongside your chimps; as you figure out more about the game and its processes your chimps evolve and adapt more and more to their environment and move ever closer to becoming early humans.

Visually the game is beautiful. Never once did I get bored exploring the massive game world presented to me. Many times I was actually awe struck by the beauty and immensity of it. I still remember when I was out exploring trying to find a better settlement for my clan and crested the top of a rock formation to be greeted with the sight of the Savannah sprawling out before me. I remember excitedly making may way down to try and explore this new biome, only to have to retreat battered, bruised, and bloody because my chimps were ill adapted to this new environment. I also remember the immense satisfaction I felt when I evolved my chimps to better handle this new challenge, then returned in force with my clan to claim our new home.

Overall, this game has become one of my most memorable gaming experiences. I loved every second of the 70 hours I put into it. Is it perfect? No, there are some bugs and there is some jankiness here and there. Sometimes trying to figure out how to trigger a particular evolutionary path can be frustrating but with the exception of one (I won't name it for spoiler reasons), they were usually intuitive and left me face-palming when I finally figured out what I needed to do.

If you want to experience an epic and immersive adventure that is tied directly to our own heritage, I HIGHLY recommend this game.

EDIT: One thing that I guess needs to be added is that if you are the type that can't stand playing a PC game with a controller, then don't bother. This game requires a controller for maximum enjoyment.

This game takes me back to the early days of my youth when I started with computer games. One didn't know what to do or expect when one started a game, but one was excited and wanted to play more. Nowadays that feeling is really rare, most games just repeat what one has done in another game, but with different layouts or graphics. But this game gives me that special feeling of exploration, not just the world, but how to handle the game itself. It could have been done in a normal and mediocre way, but the developers didn't. Instead, they did a special and interesting game that I can really recommend. And if one is into survival games, this is a must-have game! A plus is also that it takes one back before mankind existed and gives an understanding of how all animals still have to struggle to survive to the next day. This game is a gem, and I'm glad that I found it...

So, no crazy long book about this game. It's pretty great. It's addicting to have to figure out how to do things, learning the layout(there's no minimap), and learning how to progress through the game. The devs don't hold your hand through progression or even the tutorial. Its really all on you to figure out the game in general. Some of the mechanics/physics are a little buggy, but that doesn't affect the game enough to dampen how good it is. Gotta admit, this game caught me by surprise at how much I like playing it.

This game is a radically new way of telling the oldest story. My biggest gripe is that nobody told me it's intentional to not have a clue how to play. The game is designed to make you learn just like an ape from 10 million years ago. You're taught how to walk and climb, and that's about it. Everything else is banging your controller (which is nearly required) against your desk like an ape with two rocks. You're supposed to struggle and be confused and die, because damn Nature, you scary.

There are plenty of resources to help you learn how to play and what to do, but for the full experience, avoid these and learn on your own how to fix the burning bite from the wiggly hissing meat tube.

At first it was massively fun, for a couple of hours until I noticed the same game mechanics and patterns appear over and over. After that, it felt grindy and repetitive a lot.
I really loved the game's idea and how it worked. It just seems to be rushed and not finished, there's no such thing like evolving to the stone age humans, overall, the evolvement system seems to be not rewarding enough, you barely get to walk on two legs and it is kind of useless to be honest. There could be so much said more but you have to really question yourself if you'd pay around 30€ for 5h approximately of content and then you'd grind through pain until you finished it because as long as everything seems new and different, as I said, you'll notice that you'll encounter nothing new except more grind and pain.
I'd strongly recommend the game if it would be more finished because at the current state, it's barely a playable game for longer than few days.

Let me give you a quick run through of the game...

Get annoyed before you even start playing, because the game tells you that you need a controller to experience it properly and to press A to start. (They couldn't be bothered to change it for pc version i guess).
Aimlessly walk around picking everything you can up, then you can sniff, eat or inspect it to gain points towards a skill tree.
Accidentally break your leg every 5 minutes due to the crap controls and walk really slow.
Encounter the wildlife and try out the riveting combat system, then realise all you do is hold down space bar and wait for an audio queue to either dodge or attack.
Get poisoned constantly and make the screen go blurry.
Spend half of your life sharpening sticks with a rock.
Die, then repeat the above steps with a different monkey.

You might like the sound of it, but for me it was the most boring and disappointing gaming experience I've had for a good few years. I see what the devs are trying to do, putting you in the shoes of early man and making you discover things for yourself, but when the process of discovery is one big, tedious grind, then it's about as much fun as standing on an upturned plug, except i wouldn't pay £33 for that experience.

a lot of the bad reviews this game gets are from people who failed to understand the reasons behind certain design choices. You're expected to learn to survive as our first ancestors once did: trial, error, and painful death. You're also expected to learn about yourself and your abilities. You're meant to start off weak, afraid and prey for anything, and gain confidence as you understand everything better, and become more accustomed to your enviroment. There are ways to do things that are bettter than others, but sometimes you won't realize you can improve the effects of an item by preparing it differently.

If you liked climbing in BOTW as much as i did, you'll likely love this game, even if it crashes often when you intimidate predators. Anyone else?

You wanted different, you got it here in spades. My only gripe is the micromanagement of Who has What in Which hand when you want to mass produce something for the group( it's kinda funny tho when everybody goes to turn in their spears and one or two of your clan are left holding a stick because they just couldn't keep up with the class). The game does a really good job of making you feel like an ape learning how to get by in a world that doesn't care who lives or dies.

Exploration and movement feel amazing once you get the hang of it.

You can rename your apes and family relations matter when it comes to breeding, but don't get too attached to anyone. Time will eventually bring your greatest warrior ape to his knees. The survival of future generations and the species as a whole is all that matters here.

The changes as you progress are subtle.
I can see how some would say it's too repetitive. To that, all I can say is go explore new horizons. You'd be amazed how much a new home base can change your game. Try to remember that learning IS BASED ON repetition. You're not just learning new things, you're becoming the dominant species for the whole planet...

I give you one tip -okay two tips: Don't bother learning more new traits than you have kids(unless you find a meteorite) and when you go explore solo take SOMEBODY ELSE'S kid with you -you'll see.

Oook ook!

Ancestors attempts to give a player an as accurate interpretation of how our forebears became human. This game is mostly successful at this, though I would give a significant warning to anyone considering this game - be comfortable with being told almost nothing, not having anything other than your own wit and curiosity to determine what you can do and being comfortable with failure and setbacks. If these things only heighten your interest in this game then Ancestors is definitely a must play

Reject modernity, become monke.

The only complaint I have about the game is that when you switch apes, they don't automatically follow you. I've had to backtrack for hours looking for lost tribe's members carrying babies because I didn't notice that they were missing, which is incredibly frustrating in a game that prides itself on not using an ingame map. Everything is pretty cool though.

This is a very hesitant thumbs up, and even then I'm not sure it's correct. I'd only suggest picking this up if it's heavily discounted. If you're not sold on the theme, skip over it entirely.

Somewhat amusingly for a game about evolution, the biggest problem Ancestors has is that everything follows a rigid formula. I don't think the devs finished making the game. There's no story, no objective, no purpose to evolution. It's super shallow. It's also kinda fun, but this might be 'fun to watch a car crash' style fun? I'll try and break down what went wrong, and why for some reason I still enjoyed bits of the game.

The game also adamantly refuses to use terms like 'skill tree', 'experience points', etc. For the sake of the review I'll use them, but note the game uses confusing terminology throughout.

First, the controls. Oh heck the controls. The game has too many actions for a typical controller, so it ends up using a context-sensitive system. However the buttons used are not ideal. For example (using a 360 controller), holding A will sprint. Releasing A whilst moving will jump. Releasing A whilst not moving will cancel a jump. Pressing A whilst falling will grab onto something, if there's something to grab. Pressing A near an item will pick it up/interact with it. Pressing A whilst holding a consumable item will consume it. Pressing A whilst standing in a body of water - with no items in hand - will drink the water. Pressing A in combat will dodge OR attack (I'll get to this soon). It should be obvious how this system breaks down. What if I want to drink water whilst near an item? You can't, you grab the item. You equally might just jump off a cliff by mistake. This happens far too much. I was fighting against the controls the entire time.

The core mechanic of Ancestors is evolution. Take a bunch of hairy people, and progress them from sitting in poop to stabbing elephants with a pointy stick. Alright, I'm interested. It's a novel premise that hasn't really been explored before. Immediately this starts out good. New skills are unlocked rapidly early on, and they make a difference. Mobility goes from feeling clunky to (somewhat) fluid. New food options can be adapted to by sucking it up, eating them, and suffering with the ill effects. Learning to walk can be done by forcing yourself to stand up, walking a few steps, then falling over. Keep trying, you'll get it! I loved this. Skills work on a two-tier unlock system: first you have to learn the skill, then you have to pay XP to acquire it. I also enjoyed this as it both captured the spirit of evolution, and mechanically felt great.

However, evolution became less cool over time. By the end I was actively resenting it. There's two major problems here. The first: in order to evolve you have to reset the skill tree, but you get to make some skills permanent. The amount you can lock down varies by how many kids you have, and RADIATION FROM METEORITES (yes, literally). Once an upgrade is permanent it's permanent for all future generations. Everything else is lost - you still have the skills available, but you need to pay xp to get them back. This could work in theory, but in practice it's painful. Skills unlock by holding a button for 5-10 seconds, once per skill. The game makes you do this hundreds of times. This was at least an hour of real time. On top of this, there's an RNG mechanic where some babies will generate new permanent skills after evolving. This is why you're forced to reset the skill tree, because you can't unlock much without the special baby skills. This leads to a boring mechanical meta: have 6 kids, pass a generation, repeat, evolve, go back to step 1. Repeat until it feels too gamey, then go stab a rhino or something.

The second problem is the world itself. Whilst your own species evolves over time, the simulation does not. It's the same in the first minute as it is in the last. Even weirder - when you pass 'millions of years' during evolution, the simulation doesn't change. It just force-respawns all items and animals, but otherwise continues from the same second. This leads to nonsensical situations, such as my stockpile of raw meat which was still fresh after 6 million years. This also means evolution serves no purpose; it's viable to survive without unlocking a single skill, and each skill makes the game a little bit easier. Evolution doesn't grant access to new mechanics, nor new areas to explore. It's just evolution for the sake of it, and the more I evolved the more boring the game became. The first few hours were incredible (also terrifying): I didn't understand the world, and everything felt more powerful than me. By the mid-game I ran past everything because I had no reason to engage with it. There's no objective, no story, no narrative, no evolution of challenge. The later areas feel rushed and unfinished, with no reason to explore them.

On the subject of locations, oh dear. What happened here? The game starts off in a confusing jungle. It feels claustrophobic, menacing, almost an extinction level threat. But it also offers verticality, plenty of different routes to advance forward, and lots of hiding spaces for nasty snakes to jump out of. Then it becomes an open lake, when the tribe has no swimming ability. Then, as you start to learn how to swim, it changes to large grassy plains and never has swimming again. Then it's a wide open savannah, and finally a wide open desert. There's a few minor changes between these, but that's essentially the layout. The problem here: there's nothing to do in an empty plain! In the jungle you can climb trees, swing from vines, scale rocky cliffs, swim through lakes, and so on. In a wide open plain all you can do is run. This actively took away gameplay options. Whilst it was nice that the map became more open as my species learned how to be bipedal, it also became boring. There was nothing to do except sprint between points of interest for exp.

The jungle has snakes and alligators that are terrifying threats early game. The lake/grassy/woodland areas serve no purpose and should have been cut. The open plains has a full menagerie of creatures: snakes, rhinos, elephants, sabre-tooth tigers, jackals etc. Unfortunately these all have the same AI. They sit around in a pack doing nothing, then attack you if you go near. That's it.

The map design is also too formulaic. There's 6-10 'oasis' locations in each biome, and these always have 100% of your tribe's survival needs in them. There's no reason to explore or take risks when there's no reason to leave your oasis. Why become an omnivore when you have infinite edible plants in every oasis? Why migrate when you don't need anything from the savannah? Ancestors could be amazing if they fixed this aspect of it. If the plants didn't respawn you'd have a reason to become an omnivore and fight for food. The game needs some kind of extinction-level threat that forces you to adapt or die, rather than adapt 'because there's no gameplay if you don't'.

There's also combat in this game, but dang it's awful. When an enemy attacks the game goes into bullet time, then you have to hold A, and then either point the left stick at the enemy to attack or away from them to dodge. That's it. Congratulations, you now know how to beat every creature in the game without exception. You might lose if you don't have a pointy stick, but you will always win if you do. To make up for it, all sticks break after exactly one use. This system sucks. When you attack you get a cool cinematic cutscene, and these are visceral as heck. You'll stab a creature in the gut, jump on its back, then pummel it in the head with your fists until it dies. This is awesome! I just wish it was me pulling it off, and not a scripted cutscene triggered by me pressing A once.

There's a few more mechanics to the game, but this review is hitting the character limi
