Spielerisch ist es auf BG2 angehoben und man kann problemlos sein Charakter dahin transferieren.

Ich kann das Spiel mit gutem Gewissen empfählen. selbst im Jahr 2021. Old but Gold!
Besonders die Dialoge sind immer wieder ein Lachen wert. Sowas würde heute in der politisch korrekten clown world wohl nicht mehr zugelassen werden.

The first D&D video game I ever played (apart from the arcade) and what can I say, it planted the seed of my love for RPGs.
It's a must-have, it's challenging but satisfying, you'll want to play the second part as soon as you finish.

A classic game running on the classic D&D rules.
Definitely not for those who like character development or dialog. But for those who like to fight things strategically within the context of a story...moving up in levels and gaining in power and capability, this is really a fantastic classic. I very much enjoy the game play and feel that, even if nothing changes about the basic story line, a real hit could be developed if the characters, cut scenes, and graphics were brought up to modern standards.

But even as-is, it is a great game and an excellent framework.

Pros.:
- Bioware.
- The main quest and side quests are interesting.
- A lot from D&D.
- A lot of fun, humor, versatility of choices.
- Music, sounds - all good for the game from the '90s.
- Very close mechanics to Fallout 1 and 2.
- An opportunity to enjoy the story without too much grinding.

Cons.:
- The characters are too slow.
- It is absolutely stupid to force the player to wait for the whole company to move between the locations.
- It is also absolutely stupid to force player to go towards exact side of the map to reveal a new location.
- Higher res, faster hero movement WITH the team would have made it perfect.

So, the game is awesome. But it is outdated. Also, if you don't like company-based games, you will find it boring. The game requires a lot of reading.

I made a female character to role play as. My level 1 party managed to kill an ogre that dropped two unidentified belts. I put one on my main character and it turns out it was a cursed belt and it changed my gender to male. Now I have to find a way to remove this curse. 10/10

Edit: I'm cured!

I am new to D&D style gaming, but not new to RPG style gaming. It took me a few hours to get a grasp on the game play. Thus far this is my review. If you are willing to be patient, read (carefully). Not afraid to quick save and re-load (possibly a lot). Be willing to make decisions you might regret later and are able to let your imagination do a little work and immersion, you will definitely find yourself sucked into this game. I love how first off you are able to make your own custom character, which right off the bat makes you do a lot of thinking (if your like me and want to put a little bit of yourself and thought into your main character). I love the sort of hand drawn/painted landscapes and cut scenes, especially for when this game came out. The voice acting is not bad either and does provide a feeling of storytelling and immersion. I am only 10% complete with the achievements, and only 41 hours into actual game play and that only makes me even more excited to continue my adventures and see what other quests, tails of revenge, intense tactical battles, and certain death comes my way.

Brilliant game, better to play now in 2021, than ever before I would say! It's been perfected over the years, and runs fine on modern systems, just play this enhanced version on your PC and there will be no issues at all. This is a true classic, and it is definitely worth a replay (or 4) with all the newer content that has been added since it first came out.

I'm not much of a hardcore gamer (see my profile) and really only got into RPGs for the first time playing Divinity 2 with my husband. But I fell in love with CRPGs because of that and decided to give one of the classics a shot.... Well, I tried and failed to get into it probably 5 or 6 times. I would start up the tutorial and flounder for an hour and get frustrated and quit. Because frankly even this enhanced edition feels very foreign to someone who first played CRPGs in the context of a modern 3d game.

But I kept hearing about how great Baldur's Gate is and so I kept trying and finally after my sixth attempt and after reading some guides online I jumped into the game and I've now been playing for nearly 50 hours. I love it. The writing is so good. I feel like I'm playing through a high fantasy novel. Combat is very complicated from my perspective but I read guides about how important magic protections and buffs are and once I started using those liberally it became very tractable on a normal difficulty. I plan on playing through all of the expansions and the second game using my character. I LOVE how it all transfers and I get to go from a weak level 1 nobody to a level 20 demigod over the course of however many hundreds of hours the game will last. 10/10 Glad I was persistent.

Baldur's Gate is the godfather of isometric cRPGs. When I originally purchased it off a store shelf in 1998, I had no idea what an incredible ride I was in for. It was like I was playing pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons, but I controlled the entire party and didn't need to coordinate schedules with others in order to play. And the story, world, atmosphere, open exploration, excellent music... just blew my mind. I was quickly hooked.

I've since come back to replay Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 many, many... many times over the years. The game world almost feels like a second home. The Enhanced Edition makes the game easier to install on modern PCs, and adds a number of helpful quality of life improvements, some bug fixes, and support for modern resolutions-- so this is the way to play Baldur's Gate in the present day. The added characters are decent as well. I'm a particular fan of Dorn Il-Khan for an evil party. I'm somewhat less of a fan of Neera and Rasaad, just personal taste.

This is a great game, and I continue to enjoy it in 2021. If you can get over the dated visuals (which look much better in high resolution, zoomed out a bit), I think you'll enjoy Baldur's Gate. And it's sequel, Baldur's Gate II, only gets better.

Baldur's Gate is a re-release of a grim fairytale that features a lengthy and compelling story. This story takes place in a fantasy realm, where there is a strong emphasis on imaginary creatures living in a world inspired by folklore and magical constructs, and explores the absolute polarization between good and evil.
The narrative frivolously makes use of comedy and drama, but has a relatively serious undertow. The story lore follows the same principles that are exhibited in classical and similarly themed works of fantasy literature and classical role playing games. All of this takes place in a magical and seemingly medieval setting, fully realised by making use of renowned fantasy lore and role playing mechanisms.
The story features a protagonist who's heritage is initially obscured, and takes place in a land that surrounds the city of Baldur's Gate. This land is a grand stage, that may freely be explored, and also directs the protagonist and a chosen group of followers towards their destiny, and the plot unravels during play.
Each storyline is unique, because the story is played out by decisions that are made during play. The story ultimately leads to a climax that is preset, but the storyline that is followed and with whom, may freely be decided. Other characters also inhabit the world, and everything exists in an imaginary fantasy culture, which may be derived from classical works of fantasy literature, but is fresh nonetheless, and supported by original and creative ideas, which are enjoyable to read and immerse oneself in.

The protagonist's appearance must first be chosen and may be customized; by choosing a gender, a race, and by assigning personal proficiencies.
A party of friendly companion characters may accompany the protagonist, and may be recruited during the adventure. Their skills and abilities are developed during play as well, and every character has their own inventory. Companion characters may also use artificial intelligence to further customize and direct their potential. These characters are capable navigators, who may switch between equipment at any given time. They may also engage in conversation, trade with other characters, and the group of adventurers may have a certain reputation in the world based on their actions or who they recruit. A total of six companion characters may travel together at the same time, but there are many more that the protagonist may come across.
The viewpoint on the world is displayed from a bird's eye perspective, showing a landscape from a certain altitude. The distance from which this landscape is seen, may be drawn nearer and further away by zooming in and out. This viewpoint displays a landmass on which the protagonist or the companion characters may freely travel, if directed to do so.
Controlling the action is made possible through an on-screen and enabling interface, which is used to direct companion characters by pointing and sending them to a location in the world. A world which they occasionally may interact with. The action may, (and should,) be paused at any time, in order to issue commands to each individual character. This enables to swiftly micromanage affairs. How companion characters are positioned and under what circumstances, is of tactical importance. This encourages deliberation and weighing off one's chances.
Companion characters are meant to adventure across the land together. These characters all have three hundred sixty degrees sight around them, and reveal the limited radius in which their vision may be observed. Unexplored areas on the map are blackened out before they are explored. Once explored, these areas remain visible, and may be freely revisited. What exactly takes place at a given location may only be directly observed by positioning a companion character near a location, otherwise whatever takes place at those areas is unseen and obscured. These maps are predetermined environments where non-predetermined events may take place. Adversaries and side-characters may randomly appear, and there is a sense of unpredictability to these encounters. The outcome of these engagements has a degree of randomness to them, and may be tactically and strategically managed through the use of various items, that may be gathered or stored in containers. Additionally, there are day and night cycles and weather conditions, such as rain and thunder taking place in outdoor environments, which may affect what is taking place there at different time zones of a day.

The environments are artistically crafted, and contain a wide variety of realistically drawn (two-dimensional) art assets and details. Texts are well written, and characters are voiced with enthusiasm.
Companion characters play a large role towards enjoying the play, they have abilities that may complement each other. Competently using their abilities plays an important role, and their miraculous effects each have their own distinctive designs, synergies, graphics, and sounds.
There is a wide variety of locales. These places have a specific purpose in the world in relation to the storyline. They encourage exploration and are accessible from a larger map. This map enables the party to immediately travel to those locales.
Companion characters may also have banter, which may play a relevant role during the story, or they may spontaneously comment on certain situations. These companion characters are all prominent archetypes, who may have conflicting agendas, and with enough encouragement, may show romantic advances, or may prefer to leave the group. Their needs should not be ignored.
A relatively large amount of classical and orchestral sounding music and other sound effects breathe further life into the world. Some musical notes are reoccurring, and therefore the music is thematic. Many environments have their own musical scores, and may play more dramatic melodies when there is action taking place. Environmental sound effects, such as birds singing or water splashing, may sometimes be heard when observing certain areas on a map, which makes most maps immersive to navigate through and travel across.
Lastly, the story is expanded after a decade of real-time passing, which is a unique happening. This downloadable content closely follows the original work, and progresses the story, which may be saved in-between titles, and may also carry over to the next instalment.

This moldy image shows an example of a map that is beautiful, and encourages exploration because of such artful extravagance:

This game is amazing, coming from someone who doesn't like the RPG genre very much.

The game is well designed. Every other battle is a tough battle that requires you to polish your tactics. The aesthetics of the game is also phenomenal. Everything about this game is amazing. I have very few criticisms of this wonderful title.

Instant classic in my opinion. 10/10

I played this game 20 years ago, and enjoyed it then even though I never got that far in the story. Now I'm enjoying revisiting it with the Enhanced edition, and in multiplayer too (which I never did with this game before). Note that we've experienced a couple of crashes of the game here and there, and the only way we had any success with getting multiplayer to work was via a direct VPN connection. But the game is still worth the effort, I think. I've missed AD&D a lot.

I'm only a few hours in and my nostalgia high is real. The controls are clunky and I miss some of the more modern quality of life improvements, but otherwise it is tons of fun. Even the character pictures bring me back to old DnD computer games. I'm thinking of playing all of these through before picking up Baldur's Gate III. We will see how far I get.

Baldur’s Gate I Enhanced Edition Review

You know people love remakes, a remake holds a piece of nostalgia, a piece of someone’s childhood within it. But when the remake’s a complete success its importance is automatically elevated to another level such is the case with the Baldur’s gate remakes. A classic, RPG game brought to life, with better shaders and control panel, is nothing but a hit among the old fans, hitting them with their gaming nostalgia making them reminiscence the good old days. One of the greatest console western RPGs, to ever come out back in the 2000s Baldurs gate has made a pretty big name for itself, which is something not to be overlooked. With the third game still in early access and in development stated to be released sometime next year let’s take a deep dive into its highly successful predecessors.

About Baldur’s Gate I

Spawned from the popular DnD ( short form for Dungeons and Dragons Franchise ) Baldur's Gate is a series of role-playing games set in the Forgotten realms Dungeons and Dragon campaign setting. The game has spawned two series, known as the Bhaalspawn Saga and the Dark Alliance, both taking place mostly within the western Heaterlands, but the Bhaalspawn Saga extends to Amn and Tethyr. The Dark Alliance series was released for consoles and was critically and commercially successful. The Bhaalspawn Saga was critically acclaimed for using pausable real-time gameplay, which is credited with revitalizing the computer role-playing game (CRPG) genre. Originally launched for the Playstation 2, in 2012 it was announced by Atari that Beamdog and Overhaul Games would be making remakes of the original games. The series was revived thanks to this, bringing in new and old fans alike to the franchise, which also subsequently lead to the ongoing Baldurs Gate III, which is currently still in beta and is handled by larian studios who are renowned for their divinity series of games.

Baldurs Gate I features a classic role-playing game mechanism, you start up the game, and then you are faced with an intro screen that lets you either select the tutorial ( which is informative ) or you can just select the expansion and just dive straight into it. The character creation and customization is a big bonus, you could look like 2pac ( yes they got a character model like him lol ) and yet be an elf who is a paladin at the same time. So many various classes, skill temperament, weapon proficiency to choose from, it is admirable. Moving on the character movement from casting spells to attacking, to checking in your inventory is handled through just a mouse and a keyboard, which to be honest is convenient in a way though I am preferably a controller player. The controls are stylish and are situated in the left-right ends of the screen to not hinder your gaming experience. The game feels aged yet somehow nostalgic, back then I used to shelve out so many hours into this, feels like a distant memory. The Text is perfectly customizable, so people with eye conditions can comfortably adjust themselves to the text size they like. Basic attacks are easy to execute so are spells and special attacks, mob control is the key to victory here, which is fairly easy to master which requires you to time your attacks correct and pausing and discussing your every move at decisive intervals. The game features a wide vast overworld, and the fact that you can party with most people out there is really good. Partying with a lot of members is key to victory. The game isn’t a grindfest like most modern games are, you can progress easily through the main campaigns at respectable levels. The story is intriguing, considering the era, it hailed from it’s nothing short of deserving praise, for the grotesque victorian-knightly era dark fantasy writing. If you are coming in just for the story that’s even better since there is a model that won’t let your characters die which is great since you can enjoy the plot unhindered.

Pros

  • Classic CRPG experience can also say this gave birth to games like Divinity Orginal Sin and Path of Exile and can be partially considered a path for their success
  • The Controls in the remake are greatly positioned and make playing the game easier
  • Text size is customizable
  • Graphical improvements over its predecessor
  • Open-ended Quests, implying tonnes of various possibilities
  • Really good pricing and at sales it’s even better.
  • A nice tutorial helps newcomers get to understand the basics well.

Cons

  • The game feels dated and may wore out for most new individuals getting into it

Final Thoughts

Baldurs Gate is a classic and a masterpiece, and the same can be said about its sequel. Bringing in thousand and hours of immemorable gameplay and the RPG experience. Baldurs gate reigns from an era of art. Back when Video games were a form of expression by the developer and not a giddy way to screw with people’s hard-earned money. It is a complete package of good writing and really fun gameplay all packed into one delivering the best to all forms of audience. In my opinion, everyone should give Baldurs Gate a try, somewhere down the line this franchise will be written down in the book of memoirs for being diligent the godfather of modern RPG games.

as old as it is, this is still a solid game that i still come back to. there are many ways to play the game as well, from character creation and party dynamics, form casual play to hardcore speed running. the story is fantastic with lots of side quests and background information to fully immerse into the world. game play is pretty easy with complex strategies(in my opinion those are the best sorts of games). this game gets a 2 thumbs up from me and a very high recommendation to those that love RPGs'.

Played it when it came out, all those many years ago... played it again in 2021, and it is definitely worth your time. If you have never played it, play it. Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder, the Divinity series, these are all good games, but they wouldn't be here without the grand daddy of them all.

The Enhanced Edition adds a lot of great content, spruces up the content that was there, and for this version, it really shines through. Playing through, then having started BG2:EE, I notice that it seems that they really put the polish on the original, more so than the sequel. Gameplay feels smoother (still going to have character collisions from your party, its just unavoidable... but that was a problem in the original version of the game too) and while the background artwork isn't perfect, it is definitely serviceable.

Will definitely playthrough again.

The first game in the epic RPG serie. Since 2001, I have completed this game dozens of times.
+ You have a main mission in this game, but before this mission, you can do what you want.
+ Excellent balance between combat quests and other types of quests.
+ Perfectly created game world, especially cities like Baldur's Gate and Beregost.
+ In the Enchanced Edition, the Tales of Sword Cost add-on is available in the game.
+- Great number of different locations. It's too much. IMHO of course. (In BG2 this problem is fixed)
+- 29 possible companions (25 from the base game and 4 new from the Enchanced Edition). It's too much. IMHO of course. (In BG2 this problem is fixed)
- Strange system of dual clases.

Played most of BGEE on my iPad, so not many hours here. It's still one of the best RPGs out there, along with the other classic DnD series (IWD, PST, NWN) and the more modern Divinity Original Sins series. (Haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet so can't say). Despite the rougher edges compared to later DnD games (it still uses THAC0) and the Divinity series, BGEE has its own charms. It combines a massive non-unidirectional world that truly invites the adventurer in you, with the multidimensional role playing elements both diachronically for a character and synchronically across the party. Thus BG(EE) is true to the adventure RPG genre (of which DnD is a part). Although, BGEE isn't a digital board game, so it isn't a digitalised DnD experience (for that, there is Roll20).

For new players to the genre: play it for a true role playing experience, rather than trying to maximise stats or to have everything. By design you won't be able to have everything. As is with life, we must make decisions, the flip side of which is to let go. That is the essence of role playing. Of course, you can experience everything by starting multiple games with distinct characters one after another, if you wish to. The battles are going to be tough for those who are more used to ARPGs (which I don't consider 'RPGs' since there isn't actual role-playing. ARPGs are more about pumping up your adrenaline with loots.) Your team WILL die at some point, and if you play true to the DnD rules, you won't be able to revive them. Of course, you can save and load, giving you that choice. You can even play in 'story mode', which would allow you to experience the lore in a more worry-free manner (though not completely, since a lot of things still have timers). As for the story, it's genuinely epic in scale, intertwined with the rich DnD world presented in other games you might see under the DnD label. On that note, although BGEE isn't chronologically the earliest in the series (IWD is, I believe), I would recommend it as the first game for new players to the genre, as IWD has a much steeper learning curve. I think in the old days when they made the games, they just assumed that players who are purchasing later games have already played the earlier ones. If you're unused to party real-time with pause combat systems where each party member has unique mechanics, then start with BGEE by all means. Another great feature that is true to role-playing: You can export your character from BG and import it to start BG2, since BG2 is the continuation of BG1. A little downside to BG1&2 is that it's a bit of a strange experience in multiplayer, since the story is set in such as way that there is one protagonist (another deviation from tabletop DnD). IWD is much better in this regard. So consider whether you're going to play solo or with friends before purchasing.

I love the Infinity Engine games so much, and Baldur's Gate and its sequel remains the greatest in the genre. These games paved the way for so many classics that came after it, and it feels great to be able to experience them on modern systems without the need for additional hacks or patches.

Looking forward to Larian Studios's attempt at a Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate. A game which revolutionized RPG genre 22 years ago. A game which stole my heart and a lot of hours of my life. It was amazing then and you know what, it still is! Beamdog's Enhanced Edition has everything original Baldur's Gate had + a lot of improvements. I could talk about support for higher resolutions or widescreen but those are given, and of course a great improvement to the old classic. I could talk about 2D, painted backgrounds but those are great and did not aged at all. I cannot tell the same about characters' sprites but those only look bad when you zoom in (a new addition in EE version). The music is great and the voice acting too.

The most important part for me though is the world, story of my character and his/her companions and RPG elements. If you are familiar with D&D and Faerûn, you will instantly fall in love with the computer version of it. You will spend hours on character creation screen to make sure you get those dreamed dice rolls and you know what? You will love every second of it! You will start your adventure and if RPGs (not some modern action RPGs like Witcher 3) are your thing, you will sink into the game wanting to know more and more of the story. The world of Sword Coast will be open to you and your companions (and with Beamdog's 4 new characters you will be able to choose 5 out of 29!). You will not get any question marks or exclamation marks on the map. But do not be scared, you will never get lost. You are free to roam and discover the world and by exploring you will find a lot of great, interesting places. You may or may not find quests by talking to NPCs. You will know where to go by reading your journal or quests description.

I mentioned earlier that you can compose your party of 6 by acquiring 5 additional companions out of 29. It does not mean that any party will do. Some companions do not go well along with others. They will express their feelings, attitude and will comment on your achievements (or lack of those). They may fight with each other when their alignment is in opposition. They may ask you for a favor before permanently joining your company. I finished the games a few times and I did not check all of them, and I am not sure if I ever will, there is so many possibilities. I tested 3 out of 4 newly added characters (Baeloth, Dorn and Neera) and they meet high Baldur's Gate's standards. Baeloth is my favourite and will suite the evil party nicely (not recommended for a first play-through in my honest opinion).

It is also worth mentioning that the EE includes the expansion pack Tales of the Sword Coast. It adds the best dungeon in the game, the Durlag's Tower. It is not only huge but also greatly designed and it scratches the itch to dungeon crawl. It presents a challenge but also adds great rewards. Worth visiting by any adventurer and 'must see' place for every Dwarf!

I could write more about combat, spells, enemies but there was so much already written about this game that I will just say that: Metacritic User Score: 89, Metascore 91. I know that EE has lower scores and I will never understand why as it is good old Baldur's Gate with some quality of life changes plus some great additions.

Must play RPG! If only to see how it influenced the genre and allowed it to flourish for years to come!

Update: EE Version is trash, all kinds of weird changes like ruining townspeople AI, boosting HP on miners to ridiculously levels (like 100+hps, a number not even attainable by warriors in the first game) and all sorts of stupid bullshit awful changes.

most definitely and most certainly one of the better if not the best RPGs created, to date.

The enhanced edition does it justice with an uplifted UI, improved journal, the addition of kits and other excellent parts from BG2, as well as new characters, dialogues and quests.

There are still quite a few bugs to be addressed though, and some weird changes.. for instance civilian NPCs not going hostile when one is attacked in cities.

The singleplayer campaign still stays true to the magic of the original release, however Siege of Dragonspear is a major letdown story and design-wise and multiplayer is impossible to run without recurring crashes on current version. Hopefully, that would be fixed, otherwise do not recommend as just it is not worth as an Enhanced Edition.

General description: strategic Diablo style game set in one of the D&D worlds. At first I didn't really like the game, mainly the first hour or so but with a proper guide to start you out you can get into it. It's based off the original D&D rules, it's got a good story and a good cast of characters and companions. The side quests aren’t tedious to do and it's really nice to see a good collection of classic D&D monsters. The game's been around a long time and the enhanced version is great for newcomers.

Baldur’s Gate is an isometric turn based old school RPG based on the table top game Dungeons & Dragons. It tells the story of a medieval adventurer who is chased by a hulking armored figure that killed his step father and is somehow trying to provoke a war that will drag all the Sword Cost.

A Few Words

First I have to say that I played Dungeons & Dragons with my school friends when I was a kid, so playing Baldur’s Gate now felt like an emotional rollercoaster to me. Playing this game gave me moments of nostalgia, where I remembered the D&D campaigns I played with my friends, but also provoked me legit anger, because of some weird game play decisions like enemy placement (basilisks) and the final boss fight.

About the Story

The game legit made me feel like a medieval hero (villain in my case) but I wish the story of the legacy of Bhaal was told along the many chapters and not just compressed into the final chapter. For the whole game you keep wandering around the Sword Coast being chased by hired killers, you get to meet famous characters like Elminster, Drizzt and you keep thinking: “what’s going on?”. And then, in the final chapter, boom! You have an immense amount of text and explanation telling you all about the game’s story. Feels rushed. That info and clues about your char and his half brother should have been explained earlier. That’s my main concern about this game.

Weird Difficulty Curve

The other would be some over the top boss fights, like the basilisks in chap 6 or the final boss fight, which are so over the top difficult that I had to use some clever exploits to win, like abusing the skull trap spell. I wonder if it was the devs intention to make those encounters THAT difficult??

I Rate it 4.8/5.0

BG1 speaks to me on a core level. I never had the pleasure of playing it in my youth and I really think it would have warped who I was if I did. Beating it once and restarting it a couple times I find it easy to approach compared to 2. If you want to find out if you like CRPGs and if you can tolerate the old ones, this is a pretty good starting line.

There's not much to add about Baldur's Gate legacy. It's a living legend. Fantastic cast of characters, excellent music and design. Very good combat system imo, because it doesn't waste your time like Divinity or Baldurs Gate 3. Incredible introduction to the Bhaal Saga. New characters which were added in Enchanced Edition are fine, boosts the replay value for returning players.
Siege of Dragonspear is a solid however not groundbreaking add-on which goes definitely over the top. With everything, the amount and quality of magical items, characters with archetypes straight from Disney movies, amount of NPC on screen and so on.
The Black Pits were also very enjoyable arena fights run by a drow, I've spent some fun time on them.

I've been playing this game (or a version of it) off and on since 1998. It and its sequal BG2 are such good games mechanically, with such a responsive engine, that it's still my favorite implementation of the D&D rules (2nd edition/Advanced in this case) in any PC game. On top of that, the story across these two games are incredible. Yes, the character interactions are a bit weak in this, the first of the Bioware games, but a lot of the ground work that appears later is started here. And better, of all the Infinity Engine games I've played, this one most encapsulates that feeling of wonder and terror that is low-level, old school D&D.

Highly recommend this game.

baldur's gate is a classics dnd experience that never gets old. maybe the level planning is a little bit broken... you encounter enemies that you'll never be able to defeat at your level and such. plus, forgetting the fact that it seems ridiculously hard to level. I have all of my characters at level 1 after the neshkel mines thingy. I have no idea what to do or where to go, and the thing that I hate the most is that I only got a measly 1000 experience for the entire party. wheras each one needs like 2000 experience individually. it's weird.

Posting this after completing the full story arc through Throne of Bhaal (include Siege of Dragonspear) with the same character. This is not the first time I've played the game (I owned the originals when they were first released) but it has been over a decade since I last played.

Regarding the basic game (ignoring the Enhanced parts): This is THE rpg game for me. I've played others, but in the end Baldur's gate saga is the standard to judge by. That said, if you had to get just one then go with BGII. But, if you are willing to get both then include BG as well since then you can experience the full character arc, from lowly waif that needs to be careful of what you engage until you become an epic character from legends. There are lots of choices you can make, companions to meet, and things to do. So many so that you can replay and get a completely different experience just by changing what you want to focus on.

Regarding the enhancements: bottom line is that they are worth it. In particular, adjusting to modern screen sized, changes to inventory management, quick loot, etc.

Regarding the Siege of Dragonspear: This was the weakest part of the saga, in part since it's pretty much linear. That said, it's nice to close the gap between the end of BG and the start of BGII. I certainly won't be skipping it on future playthroughs.

Last: I've yet to play with The Black Pits content (since they aren't tied to the story arc) so I've nothing to say except: good to have even more content to play with. I imagine this will be fun when I want to try out new character builds.

Perfect for any D&D nerd and great as an introduction to the universe (and all of its spells).
Was distracted by all the various side quests.
Durlag's Tower(which is a side quest) , in my opinion, was the highlight of the game, in terms of combat, puzzles, and story.

This game is simply a pioneer gem in the RPG category.

I played this game when it first came out over 20 years ago. Not only is this a walk down memory lane, but now I'm playing it at max video settings at 5k. I love it! Its like seeing an old friend who is doing way better now than they were doing way back when.
This is a difficult game, even on Easy mode. If you like being challenged to the point on dying and reloading often, this is the game for you. However, having said that, there are mods out there for this game that can help make things easier (such as fully charging your wands) without cheating too much. The save editor alone makes this game worth playing, because it IS a good RPG with a good story that is very D&D. Play it how you want, use the internet to help with quests, and spend hours playing this game. Honestly. Now that I have the resources at my disposal to help make this game more enjoyable, I can't stop playing it! I've spent a good 18 hours on Durlag's Tower alone, lol!
Bottom line, age has made this old-school game even better! It may be VERY outdated graphics-wise, but its a game with good story and lore. Check it out!

I grew up watching my dad play this as a kid and I had always wanted to sit down and play through it myself, but usually never got very far before I lost interest (Maybe 15 to 30 minutes in usually). I finally sat myself down and told myself I was going to give it a dedicated try and honestly now I am kicking myself for waiting this long to play through it. I have been unable to put this game down and it has destroyed my interest in playing anything else. 148 hours later and I'm not even near the end of this game and I am enjoying every second of it.

I highly recommend this game to others and recommend that those who try it really give it a fair shot. It starts off a little slow but once it gets rolling it is a ride that just doesn't seem to stop. The gameplay is fun, the storytelling is great and you aren't shoehorned into a particular style of play or approach to handling things.

Playing for the first time in 2020 so I don't have the nostalgia that others might have with playing it but as someone who is new to games, I found it very enjoyable. The most challenging part was getting used to the highly strategic style of play that the fight scenes are (particularly against the 'boss' figures), it requires a lot of patience and a reasonable amount of familiarity with your character's/team's abilities but it's something I was able to build up over time (as the game progressed) and become very rewarding when I was able to beat the final boss without my partner's help! As a newb to the gaming world, it was enjoyable and easy to become engrossed in.

This is classic Baldur's Gate! What is not to love!!?? With BG3 out now, it was (and is) fun to get back in touch with the original cast of characters. Fun to play while waiting for more chapters of BG3 and get your Baldur's itch scratched. Get the bundle for sure, You will fall in love with all the characters and villains all over again. There is absolutely no reason not to have this bundle in your inventory as a go to. Go for the eyes BOO!!

Baldur's Gate is a good game with entertaining and interesting writing buried behind an absolute slog of an early game. Much of the game is played at level 1-3 of D&D, which in this particular version is extremely brutal as every spellcasting class becomes useless for the first half of the game, and even then you get to save and reload constantly due to dice rolls not going your way. Given enough patience, there is some good gameplay to be found, and the original story of Baldur's Gate and its inhabitants is quite interesting, but the entire game is completely outclassed by its successor, Baldur's Gate 2, simply by starting at level 7 or so and allowing more leeway with spell casting, skills, and not having everybody explode the first time you stumble across an ogre.

There is very much a good game in here, and the writing is solid throughout, but the amount of reloading required for most options simply isn't worth it.

This is one of the greatest Forgotten Realms games ever made. It has all the elements that make for an amazing RPG. Deep character development and intricate mechanics. The Seige of Dragonspear, which its biggest problem was just bad writing, is not really worth the money, but the base game stands as a testament to how age doesn't matter too much on a game. The character creation process is super fun and it never gets old. The story is amazing too.

It's a dream come true

I find myself weeping and shaking, I am afraid I am beyond salvation nor therapy. Thanks to Baldoors I have finally become the ultimate and most powerful chaotic good bisexual genderfluid bamf to ever set a foot into the Forgotten Realms, and I'm addicted to it.

what am i supposed to do with that tho? Am I supposed to put on my curriculum vitae ''I'm a lvl 8 lathander cleric able to cast Bolt of Glory''???

At this point there are two chromatic dragons inside me, one is way too immersed into my quest of gaying around and exploring every corner of this wonderful world and story, the other one is tempted to press uninstall, trying to get a grasp on the little sanity I have left and recover the reigns of my life as for the 15th time at 5am I've fallen instakilled by a basilisk gaze directed to my party leader. HeLp.

This is still one of the all-time greats.

The EE has some key quality of life enhancements, and the addition of prestige classes as well as sorcerer and shaman and perhaps some other stuff I'm forgetting definitely makes BG1 more enjoyable.

Siege of Dragonspear is OK - The main storyline is a bit silly, but there are some solid quests, and lots of dungeon crawl type zones to enjoy. Overall, I think I'm happy to have one more episode in the venerable Infinity Engine.

Well, this is a take from someone who doesn't shy away from old games, even though I was still a little brat when this game came out. After investing 100 hours into the game, I can finally say that I'm ready to highlight some pros and cons. Pros:
  • Wide range of available companions and party combinations;
  • Narratively strong game by the late 90s standards (today - not so much);
  • Siege of Dragonspear DLC is genuinely good and feels hand-crafted and more focused than the main campaign.
Cons:
  • Silly, uninspired writing;
  • By today's standards the storyline is very clichéd and weak;
  • Many boring fetch quests (go kill 'insert_enemy', bring back my 'item_name');
  • No companion banter (fixable by mods);
  • Slow running speed (fixable by mods);
  • Horrendous inventory management (you can improve item stacking by mods, but that's it);
  • 2nd edition D&D rules suck for low-level adventures (mages are prone to be one-shotted in every encounter);
  • Empty maps with lots of wasted space;
  • Durlag's Tower is an exercise in patience and constant reloading;
  • Severely dated engine with annoying pathfinding and collision problems;
  • Multiplayer is often broken.
Overall, this game is a relic of the past even in its Enhanced rendition. I've played a fair share of the late 80s and early 90s games (Wizardry, M&M, Gold Box, and SSI games) so putting up with bad UI and other problems doesn't bother me too much, I can still enjoy the old-school experience, and that's why I won't leave a negative review. Would I ever consider recommending this game to my peers or friends? Definitely not. Honestly speaking, you can skip this one and go straight to Baldur's Gate II. That one is better in pretty much every aspect, albeit is more restrictive when it comes to world exploration. But that's for the best.

While playing it became very easy to see the direct lineage lines that eventually formed the more modern CRPGs like Divinity Original Sin 2. The 2nd edition dungeons and dragons rules are on full display here which can be a pro or a con depending on how patient and old you are. I found the game to be a nice trip back to my youth, but could see how first timers or 5th edition D&D fans may find it archaic, tedious, and sometimes too hard. A lot of the folks i know find it difficult to sink their teeth into games which have bad graphics or an older visual style and I would caution those types to steer well clear as this game has aged terribly in the visual department. The story is mediocre by today's standards and the voice acting, while passable due to a few standouts, dances around the good and bad sides of mediocre. In the game's defense i would have easily given this a review score of 9 or 10 in the late 90s, but today I think the best i could muster is a 7 / 10. I will freely admit my bias towards The Forgotten Realms of the 2nd edition era and this game in general as both were very dear to me in their infancy. I'm a few hours into Baldur's Gate 2 as of the time of this writing and am happy to report it has aged with much more grace. If nothing else it might be worth powering through just to get to the sequel.

The enhanced edition finally allowed me to complete this venerable game, including the Siege of Dragonspear expansion (which was very good too). Kudos to Beamdog for sticking it out all those years being doubted and mauled by the fan base :) In terms of what this edition offers over the old / vanilla version from GOG.com (which I also have), it's mostly quality-of-life improvements such as native support for modern resolutions, zoom in / zoom out functions, font scaling, etc - though there is also some added content in terms of companions and side quests. The game itself is as amazing as ever, with an epic story, deep character customisation, a large world to explore, ans challenging combat all in top-down 2D isometric view. The combat rules follow Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D) rules, so some background reading is advised (though there are several guides on the web to help understand the obscure rules). All in all, glad that I finally got to play and finish one of the all-time classics properly.

This game is fantastic! I adore it, and the second game. The DLC expansions are also very good.

Baldurs Gate is an excellent Dungeons n Dragons type game with a neat and interesting plot and characters , hilarious writing and tons of other cool things like hidden treasure across the world.

There's tons of different classes and kits and multiclassing you can do to make just about any kind of character you want

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good RPG.

Baldur's Gate is hard to give a balanced opinion on. This is probably the most defining game in my life: I played when it was virtually new, I know it inside out to the most tedious detail, but this also makes it impossible to see the game objectively. It's probably very different playing this in 2020 than in 1998. It isn't even the same game really, Enhanced Edition is Baldur's Gate rendered in Baldur's Gate II's engine, with tons of added content from Beamdog. But do I still recommend it? Absolutely.

First off, I don't like a lot of the changes Beamdog made. Getting rid of the original cut-scenes and replacing them with cheap looking knock-offs never sat right with me. I miss the old UI and don't understand why they couldn't incorporate its Medieval stone aesthetics into the setup they have now. And though I've gotten used to the new NPCs by now, I'd personally just as well do without them. I actually liked Beamdog's Siege of Dragonspear expansion, as that was totally new content with nothing to compare to, but I wish they had retained much more of the original experience in the base game.

On the other hand I have to give them credit for keeping a 20-something year old game relevant in today's gaming landscape. The thing is on the Nintendo Switch for Bhaal's sake, not to mention the much anticipated Baldur's Gate III. Would Larian have bought the Baldur's Gate licence without Beamdog keeping the name alive these past years? Back in the early days of the Enhanced Edition the Beamdog forums coalesced a huge number of like-minded people together, it was awesome and a revelation to me that people still remembered these games so fondly. There's just something about Baldur's Gate which brings people together, and while I have no idea whether it continues to attract converts today, it remains perhaps my favourite game of all time.

Finally, I would add that I have heard a few people say that while Baldur's Gate II is good, the original isn't worth playing nowadays. I wouldn't agree with that and actually prefer the original, it has a huge map which can be intimidating, but it's 1998's version of an open world experience. Approach it in this way, explore at your own pace, and you might enjoy it. Anyway that's just my very subjective opinion.

You know you have an excellent game if it's an rpg made in 1998 and still tops most modern rpgs in scale and story. If your someone who needs to play something in the latest graphics, or is picky with what dnd version they play (it's 2nd edition) then it's probably not for you. But if your're like me and like a challenging, unique, and exciting game with a deep, well-thought out story line, then go for it.

Some things never get too old.

Baldur's Gate is the one that started it all. The first of the Infinity Engine era cRPGs. As such, its impact and significance on the genre can't be overstated. The Enhanced Edition provides for an opportunity to revisit this great classic. It includes the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion plus several new additions and four new companions. It is properly compatible with modern PCs and offers an improved and scalable interface. It has several quality-of-life additions, such as a quick-loot mechanic, that do a lot to mitigate various old irritations. Some bugs do still persist and while a good amount of customization options are present, the game does need to be sped up via ini editing. But minor hiccups aside, it is a worthwhile package.

So what about new players? Admittedly, the game has aged considerably. Starting with mechanics. The D&D ruleset it's based on, AD&D, is quite obtuse and lacks the clarity or refinement of later revisions such as v3.5. Even with the Enhanced Edition's improved interface there are a lot of things here that are unclear or hidden behind numerous tabs. There are also many terms that a new player is better off looking up on some wiki or other, if they hope to understand. That those rules are rather haphazardly applied only serves to make the wiki-dive doubly necessary. Yet, with enough patience, this obstacle is not insurmountable. It is also a trait shared with all of Baldur's Gate sibling classics. Therefore a necessary rite of passage for people who want to experience those games.

Still, this game has aged in more ways than its sibling games. Being the first, it predates several important improvements in level and quest design. Dungeons from the base game are generally unimpressive and dull. An aspect vastly improved as early as in Tales of the Sword Coast. See for instance Ulcaster's Dungeon and compare with Durlag's Tower from that expansion. The difference is night and day. The latter is a proper dungeon, despite a few obtuse riddles, the former is just some corridors with a few enemies. The eponymous city of Baldur's Gate is another example with its numerous pointless, copy-pasted, generic shops and houses. Contrast with Athkatla from Baldur's Gate 2 and see how much more memorable a hub that was. As for quests, a fair number of them are basically find X or talk to Y. Plus, several side-quests are completed in the blink of an eye and feel like filler.

So far I spoke of archaic mechanics and obtuse rules, peppered with a few bugs. So what does a new player get out of playing this game? A classic tale, that doubles as the first part of the famous Bhaalspawn saga. Set in the Forgotten Realms, one of the best and most iconic fantasy settings ever. An ultimately enjoyable rendition of AD&D, with lots of fun battles, customization, exploration and tactics. If the player can tolerate and become accustomed to its rather aged mechanics and a few early installment antics, then this game will comfortably fulfill its purpose and keep the player engaged and entertained throughout. It may be inferior to its celebrated sequel but it is still a quality game. I recommend it to all fans of classic cRPGs.

Just finished this gem, and I have to say I'm quite impressed. It is another of a series of infinity engine cRPG games I never got around to playing as a kid, though I started up a campaign in my early teens. After playing through Pathfinder Kingmaker I have to say, this game is much easier. Though you can chalk that up to it being shorter overall.
What can be said about Baldur's Gate that can't be said about every D&D campaign you've ever had with your buddies and a tough (but fun) DM? Wicked Big Bad with a terrible plan for wanton slaughter? Check. Campaign hook that starts with the death of the main roleplayer's (you) father figure? Check. Monty Python-esque humor and writing that is as epic as it is self aware and fun? Check.
This game is a timeless D&D experience on infinity engine goodness, waith all the cRPG quirks you'd expect. From stuck characters to crazy difficulty ramps, it plays hard and asks for investment. Don't be discouraged if you die, it happens to everyone. It's a game that asks for patience and strategy but rewards it with excellent sensation of triumphing against the odds and earning some sweet loot to boot.
As for the story itself, it's a mythology by this point. Bloodlines of dark gods intermingling within the shadows of conspiracy, and a dark prophecy tying it all together. Not exactly a twist you wouldn't see coming today, but like listening to an old bedtime story or hearing a campfire tale about a legendary hero vanquishing the forces of evil (or embracing its seductive power) you can't really fault it for being what it has always been.
A classic. 9.5/10

For the newcomers to this game: expect one giant exploration based rpg. There is an entire coast of areas to discover, including the city of Baldur's Gate, with lots of random stuff and quests. In addition, while the gameplay system might seem daunting if you are not familiar with tabletop rpg's, expect to spend hours figuring out what works for a character and what doesn't, which spells are effective when, how to approach certain enemies etc. At least half of the fun of the game is in exploring the system as much as the story and areas.

For the experienced: Do yourself a favour, and replay this with the EE, together with the mods BG1 NPC project and Holic's 3.5 remaster of this game, with basic AI enhancements from SCS recommended. This will breathe new life into the game, and boosts a lot of classes and combinations that used to be weak in the original version.

Especially I welcome the 3.5 mod's balanced approach to classes, items and feats. It is a hell of a lot of fun to explore the new feat system, the new abilities and the new spells as well as the new NPC classes. In addition, I feel with its revamped attack-per-round system and the changed stacking of dex bonus with armour the game is much more enjoyable, and a lot of classes that used to be very weak (without a dual class splash of fighter) are now much more effective, notably clerics and thieves. I must warn that the first two levels before you get to lvl 3 are also much more deadly! Liberal application of Sleep is recommended, and luckily druids also get that spell now!

It's one of the greatest AD&D game modules every created. It set many standards in gaming and also the AD&D tabletop community. It's worth playing through if you're a DM and want to get some ideas.

Expect what you would expect from a tabletop D&D campaign with friends; albeit with much better writing, visuals, and sounds. If you haven't played either before, expect a narrative focused, deliberately paced, turn-based, western RPG. There is a large amount of text, talking to NPC's, and wandering about from destination to destination as opposed to the predominantly combat heavy, action-oriented RPGs popular today. If anything it is the definition of the CRPG genre and for those that enjoy the turn based RPG's of the 90's and prior, I would suggest giving it a shot if this one passed you by. It somewhat captures the feel of a tabletop experience but is also a very well made game in its own right. The music, dialogue, and artwork in particular are well done. The pre-rendered backgrounds still look great and still worth checking out if you're in the latter camp. If not, do some digging to make sure this would be right for you. If contemporary Final Fantasy, The Witcher, and modern Elder Scrolls are your bread and butter for RPG gaming, you may find this is to be too tedious or slow.

Do not buy. Playability is poor. Game toggles back and forth from one screen size to another, Game characters become non responsive at different times for no apparent reason. Still trying to work out issues with game. If things improve I'll post to that effect. Want game to work. Really do. Right now that ain't happening.

The original game actually saved my life when I was sixteen. I would and do recommend this game to everyone. Don't buy the new DLC though, it sucks and ruins everything,

Game is D&D and uses real D&D rule sets - it's not a marketing pitch.
It's a sandboxed RPG

One of the all time rpg classics! Of course graphics are outdated, movement is clunky and the interface is a pain in the ass. However, the game still has a lot of charme. Great NPC and character interaction, tons of lore and good sideqeusts make the game still worth playing even after two decades. Your actions and decisions have some impact on the NPC around you since you may play as one of the goody good guys or as an evel freak and this is what makes rpgs interesting.
D&D fans will like how the ruleset was implemented in the game, making character progression and leveling very complex. Character progression is rather slow and especially at the beginning your characters will have only a limited amount of abilities. Nevertheless, you'll have plenty of options later on leveling up your characters. If you are not familiar with the D&D ruleset you'll have to do some research on what is possible and what might suit your playstyle.
Moreover, it is great to see that a game can tell an exiting story without aiming at saving the world, the galaxy or the universe. It is a simple story but it should still make you curious and you will want to know what is going on at the Sword Coast and you'll want to discover the dark secrets of your main character.

If you want to have a modern, fast paced game you will hate Baldur's Gate. If you are looking for a rather slow game experience extremely rich in details, with a solid or even good story then this game might be interesting for you. Make sure that you do not forget to use your savegame and thus the characters when playing Baldur's Gate 2 which is a really awesome colossus of a game!
