Für den Preis von 7€ ( für das Basis Spiel ) bekommt man viel zu wenig. Außerdem sind viel zu viele Dlc's erhältlich, mit dem man z.b. Geld nur für eine Skirmish Ki ausgeben muss !

Battle of Empires: 1914-1918 spielt im 1. Weltkrieg.

It was a core feature of all MoW games that you can open all of the maps in the GEM editor. But the BoE devs locked them away for no reason. I bought the game for the editor, and im really disappointed. The devs started as modders like this game was firstly a mod for MoW and now they won't let people mod their maps? wtf?

Gute Idee - Passable Umsetzung

I for the life of me can't understand why this game has so many negative reviews, because it's quite literally Men of War Assault Squad 1/2 with the old school MoW control scheme with a WW1 setting. Sure, the level of polish isn't quite on par with MoW with various grammatical errors (you can really tell the guy who wrote the script isn't a native English speaker, which is made all the more bizarre considering it's voice acted dialogue most of the time so I don't know why the VA didn't just correct it themselves?) and some bits of bugs here and there, but there's nothing glaring that I've noticed thus far.

I got to take part in the Battle of Cambrai in a video game, which is pretty dope. I went from commanding a small squad of Mk. IV British tanks and punching through the German lines having to take small hard fought gain after small hard fought gain, to losing one of the female tanks and having another break down, to a daring tool grab from the crew of the broken down tank as the command tank flanked the German artillery and laid down suppressing fire, to regrouping with both tanks for one final push through the lines as the female tank was finally lost for good and the command tank barely makes it through the final push after finishing off the German guns and supporting the infantry push. Then we come to a halt as our tank is broken down and I have to equip my crew with scavenged battlefield German weapons and stage a raid on a German camp to get tools to fix our treads as a lone brave soldier braves MG and artillery fire to syphon fuel from a fallen Allied Mk. IV on the shell torn roads on the other side of the map.. all for it to come together with us refueling and repairing the tank, pushing through the last of the lines into a small German village where we engage in tank on tank battles with a squadron of German A7V's supported by field guns and infantry. We finally take the village and finish the campaign, many a reloaded save and hour later, feeling victorious. There was even a bit of history on the battles at the end there, you can tell the devs did their research with this game.

The scope of content with this game is pretty vast if you buy the Deluxe Edition which includes all the DLC's, which for around $45USD I feel is a decent deal considering I spent 4+ hours on a single campaign mission and there's loads of them plus a mission editor and multiplayer available as well. It's MoW Assault Squad with old school MoW controls in a well done and researched WW1 setting with only a SLIGHT bit of lacking polish, I for the life of me can't see why so many people seem to dislike it if they claim to like MoW games as a lot of popular MoW mods aren't half as polished as this game is. I'd say on a 1 out of 10 scale this game ranks a solid 8.5. If you like MoW / Call to Arms / Etc. and feel a WW1 setting sounds cool, this game is definitely not a bad buy at all.

Poor pathfinding ai leads to very frustrating experience where you are required to micromanage soldiers movement to avoid the types of barbed wire the developers added in(they will automatically avoid barbed wire that is built into the engine eg. barbed wire found in MoW games) unless you want half your soldiers dead or out bandages before they even make contact with the enemy. Trenches never worked very well in the older MoW so you can bet they still don't work well here, machine gun emplacements and mortars getting stuck in the trenches or beneath the ground. The bugs ruin the enjoyment for me.

Really enjoyed this game. The Developers really did their research on WW1 to the point that all the Weapons, Uniforms, Equipment, Nations, Tanks, Automobiles, Vehicles in General are just Perfect Recreations of their real life counter parts. It makes it immensely immersive. All the Negative Reviews are about how the DLC is too expensive but if you have the money i recommend 100% that you buy it!

This game was fun at first, as sending waves of soldiers into the meat grinder in-game is worth a few hours of entertainment, but I can't recommend this game just to save others from disappointment.

The DLC is evidence of an almost cartoonishly evil greed amongst the developers. They hacked apart the game to sell us the main components of the game as DLC. It's analogous to Ordering a Hamburger and the restaurant charges you $5 for every topping on it. This game is not worth $9, + $7, + $5 + $5 + $1 + $5 + $6 + $5 + $5. This game and its crappy Gem Engine is not worth $50.00

Otherwise, the game fails to in any way capture the brutality of the first world war. Trench Warfare was frequently brutal hand-to-hand combat, but all this seems to depict is lazy potshots at one another from across no man's land. Artillery is frequently so weak it's virtually useless, failing to do any significant damage before the enemy has a chance to bandage themselves. The addition of horses was interesting at a glance, but the soldiers can't do anything from horseback, so attempting to make cavalry charges just results in a lot of dead horses. Hardly spectacular. Gas is rarely used in the campaign, and it's always a cutscene, watching a trenchful of your men just die without any kind of reaction. Nobody puts on the gasmasks that are clearly in their inventories, nobody attempts to run or seek shelter from it. It's like gassing vegetables. Then there are the stealth missions the tedious nature of which causes you to click restart or load save at the smallest of F/U/K-ups.

All in all, a very poor depiction of World War One. 0/10 would not jump in the trenches again even if on sale.

A neat little WW1 game. Simple, Fun and has some great campaigns. The only downside is that you need to pay for the campaigns, which have some of the worst voice acting I've ever seen in a video game. But if you love WW1 I would give it a shot, as there aren't alot of WW1 games on the market currently.

Trench hopping ludological activities are few and far between these days. Doing no favours to this interest is the fact that the unpopular Olympics of 1914-1918 cemented themselves in the mind of strategy-gaming-enthusiasts as a crazy “100 meter no man’s land dash”. Sure, Battlefield 1 gave it asucessful and romanticized go in 2016 but the spark of muddy-holes-in-Flanders warfare failed to ignite the flames of game developers everywhere. In fact, while doing research for this piece I 100% blame EA and DICE for the subsequent downfall of WW1 gaming.

Read more at: Onehexaway.wordpress.com

A less than memorable game title and even less than stellar visuals and an overall lack of polish can deceive even the most open-minded wargamers in the wild to trow out Battle of Empires 1914-1918 deep into the the nearest rat-shit-filled trench. But a brief two week scuffle with COVID had me locked up, unable to work and wishing for a familiar, conforting formula in real-time-stratego. I had bought BoE a couple of years back but never gave it a fair shot. A boring first mission that has you, the commander taking control of a french detachment ambushed by germans while riding a train doesn’t do much to sell the great game that lies beyond the deep layer of first impressions.

French poilus will go on to have great (mis)adventures across the four years of World War 1. BoE excells in depicting the tecnological advances that ocurred across the conflict. It does not lose itself in details nor it tries to force it down your throat (Cough! Battlefield 1! Cough!), it’s surprisingly organic. In the early-war missions french units are sporting their iconic red trousers and blue coats. Give a couple assignments in the poilus are now dressing the horizon-blue tinted tunics and trousers. The red, white and blue cap has given way to the M15 Casque Adrien. Besides the visual candy, the campaign also introduces new weapons and equipment that range from more bolt action to semi automatic rifles, the chauchat light machine gun and even the Renault FT, the first tank to flaunt a rotating turret.

If you know a thing or two about Men of War (whose engine this game clearly borrows and takes it for a long, afternoon stroll across early 20th century Europe) then it will come as no surprise that every single units is important and there is no such thing as cannon fodder. I was intrigued to see how BoE would deal with the massive slaughter of World War 1 while trying to keep the focus on small scale units tactics in which this engine eclipses any other. If one wishes to ignore the really extremely minuscule scale of one or two single soldiers mission and focus more on 15 and plus then usually BoE hands you the command of a section of the map and tasks you with very specific tasks. All the while the massive scale of World War 1 rages around you, making you feel a part of a greater conflict. Missions usually are lenghty and multi-phased affairs, with general staff constantly updating mission objectives and always keeping the CO on their toes.

Unpredictability is not a good thing when you’re making tough decisions on how to tackle a hard objective. Sure you can rush your infantry forward getting everyone killed but the single hero that hoists the flag, capture the point and be done with it. Shit hits the fan if you’re then tasked with fighting off the undending waves of huns rushing your strongpoint and no reinforcements are expected. While I’m not a fan of pulling the rug from under the player in strategy games as a whole, the way it’s implemented here asks the player to treat their pixeltruppen with some special care, and I’m unapologetically okay with that.

Battle of Empires might not be love at first sight but it carries some endearing qualities that will keep you coming back to it after those temporary trench-hopping surges have passed. While I’ve focused on the french in this small article I can assure you that both the British and German campaign pack the same love and attention from the developers. You can buy it on Steam for its regular price of 7,39 euros or wait for a sale and get the entire compendium in a sale.

Although this game was released after MoWAS2, it's using older engine than MoWAS2. Graphics from pre-MoWAS2 era and same with accessibility. Squad selection icon in MoWAS2 is a very important QoL feature. Also MoWAS2 is the only game in MoW franchise which allows you to use additional buttons on gaming mouse.

Voice acting is as bad as in MoW games. Not even talking about English version.

Melee combat is crap. It's not very important for MoW games, since MoW games set in WWII era but BoE is a WWI game... You have shashka (No. It's not a name. It's a type of saber used by cossacks), sabers and of course throwables like knives and axes. Melee combat is same in all games since it was introduced.

Stealth is bad. I used bushes as cover and enemies spotted me. Stealth plays big role in some missions.

In short. I haven't noticed any QoL updates in this game and it has all problems from MoW games. Buy only if you love WWI era, with big discount or if the price in your region is low. I personally love rtt games these days but i'm not a masochist.

I loved this game! It's one of the earliest games I remember playing! Especially good with friends and I might get more single player modes soon. The DLC and small player base is one of my pet peeves but oh well... great game nonetheless! I feel it's seriously underrated but if you want to get it for multiplayer I recommend having a group of friends to game with.

lots of potential but not playable.

But the game breaking shit was reloading. I could find no way to resupply my men other than running each one back and forth to ammo crates. The required micro for this means i can do nothing else with 80+ men. Im sure there is a way to do this better, but it isnt mentioned in any guide, or in the tutorial, and i cant search online because the name makes it impossible to search for game guides without getting historical stuff instead.

So in the first defense of the trainyard, i wreck shit until out of ammo then my men sit and die.

Horrible

(if anyone can explain how this is done in the comments, i will reconsider the review.)

This game had a lot of potential: a full fledged World War I game in the style of Men of War! But it is terribly clunky, bad controls, graphics that at least seem to me to be worse than Men of War, and more. Not to mention that its pretty dead now.

I like the history behind it, I dislike how hard it is to make accurate looking maps.

Don't buy this game without DLCs, it has very few missions and factions you can play with, overall i managed to complete the normal version of the game in something like 84 mins (THIS SHOULD BE AS FAR AS YOU CAN GET WITHOUT DLCS).

the only reason why I would not recommend this is because the game has only one set of user made missions and there are only 4

Wanted to play the singleplayer campaigns hoping for a polished game. Sadly the game is awful in almost every aspect.
Even a simple reskin of Mowas 2 would have done it for me, but this is just worse. Especially the narration of the story segments are unbearable.

The UI Is cancer in every way.

example: You have to labouriously drag shells from a box 6 at a time then take them to an artillery gun to reload it for instance. Good luck doing this when you have 200 other men to manage at the same time.

example 2: To put down sandbags you have to open an inventory of an engineer and double click to equip it before it appears in the build menu, then once you build it disappears again. Also, there's no obvious way to rotate them.

The buttons are tiny even if you lower yourself to 1080p resolution.

If you like Men of War or are interested in WWI, you'll probably enjoy this. No automatic weapons and (almost) no tanks really change the pace from MoW.

I appreciate this running native on Linux, my OS of choice.

To play this game fully, buy the DLC. But, by doing that, you spend a lot of money you could have spent on another game. Would I buy again? No, it just doesn't give you enough.

It was fun at first, and sending waves of copy-pasted soldiers into the meat grinder in the editor is hours of entertainment, but I can't recommend this game just to save others from dissapointment.

I'll start with the elephant in the room, the devs are almost cartoonishly greedy it seems. They've cut the legs off the game to sell to us as DLC. It's analagous to selling someone a car, and then selling them a season pass that includes the rear-view mirror, the trunk door, and the two rear wheels.

Otherwise, the game fails to in any way captre the brutality of the first world war. This is do in part to the failing of the Gem engine to be able to accurately portray this, but nonetheless I expect more to that end from a project of this scale. Trench Warfare was frequently brutal hand to hand combat, but all this seems to depict is lazy potshots at one another from across no mans land. Nobody puts on the gasmasks that are clearly in their inventory, no body attemtps to run or seek shelther from it. It's like gassing mannequins.

All in all, a very poor depiction of World War One. Look elsewhere.
