Puh, was soll ich sagen?

BLACKSAD – UNDER THE SKIN

???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????
Ist ein Point & Click Quick Time Event Adventure Spiel (so würde ich es bezeichnen)von den Entwicklerstudios Pendulo Studios und YS Interactive
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2278108147

Story

Irgendwie kommt man ans Ziel
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2274556851

Erfolge

Also rate ich jedem Erfolgsjäger eher ab.

Blacksads markanter Stimme könnte man stundenlang lauschen!

This game is a pretty to look at poorly coded wreck that was pushed out with game breaking bugs that will essentially soft lock your game and cheat you out of hours of your time and it was NEVER fixed and never will be because this developer has no integrity. Essential items that you need won't spawn and will stop your progression dead in its tracks, the facial animations are a bit clippy and awkward, the game will randomly but often skip entire dialog segments so you have absolutely no idea what was said at all and you will undoubtedly miss crucial information and clues because of it. There are also collectibles for you to find but some of them you can't even pick up because the broken unfinished game code won't give you the prompt to do so.

Literally the only good thing that can be said about this POS is that it has a good art style because that's definitely the only thing they put any effort into, The story had promise to be interesting and immersive with multiple interesting characters but sadly I don't know much about it because you move at the speed of smell, seemingly half of the over five hours I wasted on this game was spent damn slowly walking around. It should be illegal to sell broken garbage like this and I wish that the game breaking bugs weren't conveniently past the 2 hour mark because otherwise I would most definitely be demanding a refund. DO NOT BUY.

Oh, wow. This game does look very interesting, but performance is extremely choppy, which totally spoils the experience. The devs have had plenty of time to patch any performance issues, but looks like they haven't.

One of my first reviews in English. :)
Just to make everyone know - I am a fan of interactive movie games, detectives (especially Sherlock Holmes games by Frogware), where we can match the deductions and solve something by ourselves and of course story games (like The Council or similar). This game combines all of these genres!!
Let me give you the opinion right away: I am a real fan of this game and it really made me happy after I made it till the end in about 20 hours (it wrote more than 38 however I left it open for almost a whole day). Why so?
Setting.
I guess it’s the most innovative thing I ever saw in such genres!
People “made of” animals are just brilliant. The game has about 20 characters with whom you can interact. All of them have their own nature, behavior and motives. There are no empty characters without a story or a background. Everyone plays their role in this game and plays it nicely.
Gameplay.
Most of the time you will have dialogues with many characters with fast choices where you will face consequences. Similar to telltale however here we do have less qte and most of the choices affect either our story (characters) or “Our Blacksad” list. Thing is that by the end of the game we will “build” our own character. Each choice of the dialog you have made affects one of the 16 characteristics (basically 8 of them and the opposite 8). So for example I decided to hug someone - it brings some percentage to romantic let’s say now it’s 55 to 45. Then If I decided to kiss someone, let's say 3 more times it can pull it to 100% and the opposite characteristic “stale” will go to 0.
You are also search for clues moving your cat across locations and sometimes go to deduction list with ideas needing them to be matched (similar to Sherlock Jolmes games or other detectives).
Story.
It is interesting. Within the 20 hours you meet many characters, interact with them, form your own opinion etc. You can’t change the story but it’s like a long and interesting movie. You interact with the characters and play the main role in this movie. The story also includes some puzzles you need to solve before you move forward.
Graphics and sound.
It’s just wonderful! Those animals, the city and locations looks great! Everything is feeling great! The sound and the characters voice acting is also perfect.

Of course each game has their downsides:
Controls and camera - it is just uncomfortable - that is it. There is no run function thus we always need to move slowly across the locations. The camera itself sometimes behaves very strange and there is no chance to change it. So there is always one angle.
It’s not something very critical and does not spoil the game completely but it ruins your comfort while playing. I understand sometimes it’s a feature and not a bug when devs wanted us to look under the other angle to search for the cards but I do not think this is a good approach.
Unfinished storylines - some of the choices we have made have no consequences or nothing was told further even If it is expected to. It even does not affect the statistics of “our Blacksad”. It is not much of a spoiler but still as an example
- I put a bet on a boxing match twice: first on behalf of Sonia, then my reward from the Wolf. But we do not even know how this match ends.
Too many cards to collect - there are 100 cards - they are sometimes even not hidden at all and spread almost everywhere - If you want to collect them all you will need to spend too much time just for nothing.

Despite all the downsides mentioned above I love this game and highly recommend to buy it and plunge into this world for about 20 hours.

This is your classic noir detective game, with the interesting touch of the characters being anthropomorphic animals whose species reflect their personalities and roles.

While the story is great, the controls are not exactly perfect and some times may ruin the experience. Collectibles are a pain to complete, and some are kind of glitched but you can get them all after a couple playthroughs.

It is short and because of that I believe you should get it on a sale and not at full price, replayability is a bit complicated because it does not have any skip option and many of the achievements depend on multiple playthroughs, yet you can get them all in a minimum of 2 playthroughs and reloading different chapters.

To conclude, good story, meh controls, low replayability value but interesting characters and atmosphere.

Let me just say I enjoy the story overall and I think the game is intriguing and has a lot of promise.

Let me also say that, holy schnikes, this may be one of the laziest edited, buggiest games I've ever seen.

Multiple cutscenes are out of focus: something in the foreground, unimportant like a phone is in focus, but the person speaking in the background will be blurred. Dialogue is cut-off randomly; at first, I thought it was intentional, but then it became pretty clear that whoever edited the cutscenes and voiceovers got lazy. Sometimes, when I load into a scene, the voiceovers echo as well when they aren't supposed to, or random parts of dialogue don't show the character's mouth moving (implying they're thinking it) when they're actually speaking aloud. Since there is no sound difference between the MC's outer and inner voices, this can get confusing.

There have also been multiple bugs and/or uncomfortable features. Movement is frustrating, trying to zone or hone in on a specific object to view or collect is infuriating. The game has timers for certain investigative scenes or QTEs....then fails to actually let you interact during that time frame. I loaded a QTE that I failed (which is ridiculously easy to fail in this game in comparison to several other games I've played in the exact same genres), and then the game refused to give me any prompts at all, leading to my character dying, restarting the QTE, and NEVER fixing the issue. I am actually writing this review as I try to resolve this issue.

I'm obviously not finished with the game, but so far, the professionalism is lacking severely, and judging by the forums and reviews I've read, the developers really don't care about fixing these issues. I'm genuinely surprised with how buggy this game is, how positively it's reviewed on Steam. Although interesting and mostly well-written, nothing can make up for the fact it was poorly made and is STILL basically unplayable. My friends and I laughed at the game multiple times even though the story captured us BECAUSE it was so obviously awkward and impossible to play at times.

As of right now, I cannot in good conscience recommend this game.

Having read the comics a long, long time ago, I was excited at the idea of a video game. It is absolutely amazing. It has plenty of content for long-time fans but stands on its own for people who have no idea why the cat is both black and sad. I can't wait for the next one.

I missed one quick time event and accidentally killed the guy I was hired to find. 10/10 best laugh I've had in ages.

Seriously though, still playing through this, but it's got some of the best storytelling and characters I've seen in a game of this genre. I loved the Blacksad graphic novels, and this game really feels like one of them. Just with somewhat clunky movement and the occasional graphical error. The signs on the wall of the murder scene kept going through the wall texture, there's just enough clipping to disrupt immersion at crucial moments, and it's difficult to navigate the environment with such a slow walking speed. This game moves at a leisurely pace sometimes, and a run button or faster walking speed would have made the whole experience flow together better. The lip syncing seems to not line up perfectly with the audio, and some of the animations are a tad janky though they look great for the most part.

That's all the negatives I have though. It's not the most graphically impressive game, but the art style shines through and there's clearly been a lot of love put into all of the environments and character models. The voice acting is stellar, the dialogue is memorable and keeps you interested, and the world feels like a real, lived-in place. The characters feel like real people with understandable motivations, the plot kicks off immediately when you boot up the game for the first time, and the clues fit together in ways that always seem to make sense to me.

I felt like a hard boiled detective, struggling to balance my morals and my bank account, sometimes toeing the line of the law. The clues fit together in ways that I can only describe as inspired, and I was figuring things out at about the same speed that the game presented me with answers. The deduction mechanic works brilliantly to keep the plot moving forward and make all of your actions feel meaningful, and the dialogue options rarely had me guessing what Blacksad was going to say when I selected them.

I haven't played a detective game this well executed since LA Noire! I recommend it for anyone who wants a well thought out mystery with great writing, or anyone who wants to spend multiple hours looking for hidden baseball cards.

There are many bad things about this piece. OST is too short, sound design is really bad, faces of the characters don't sync, and you can sense the game was rushed to release or something and the mechanics are junkier than old LucasArts games. An incredible story tho, really movie-like, god it even opens with a Bond-esque theme. The plot is really complex and will keep you engaged over multiple playthroughs.

It got so annoying that kept me from going forward in the game.

Gameplay sequences and QTE are so bad it makes me feel wasting my life.
Few times game was stuck and I was completely out of actions (no move possible on both keyboard or controller), restart the game and hope for the best (and yes you can't unless you watch ALL of the dialogues/cutscenes prior to the moment you are stuck).

Credits aren't skippable neither (wanted to go to chapter select but couldn't)

I hated times where I needed to load last checkpoint more than I hate my life. This game needs skips so I don't listen to the same shit I know by heart again and again.

The story, plot and characters are pretty good tho.

P.S: no Steam Cloud is meh, for me as person playing from 2 PCs constantly
P.P.S: achievement hunting 0/10, the most boring I've ever seen in the game

I didn't expect to like much this game because something wasn't completely clicking for me based on the screenshots.

I'm glad I give the game a chance. Loved the story and it's the main thing I was there for. I could live with some technical issues. There are camera and movement issues. They are not as fluent and the interactions could be way more responsive. I could look past this though. It didn't ruin my playgroup.

The world and the characters are really great. I think it's because the game is based on already established comics series.

Anyway, I think I'd like to see more games in this universe. But with a more polished game play mechanics.

Still would recommend this game if you can look past some technical non-critical aspects.

Awesome game! What I loved about this game most of all was the music. It's one of the very few games which I consider buying the soundtrack to listen to in my spare time. Aside from that, the Noir-film tone of the story and the overall story arc are great. My only picks with it are that the mechanics are clunky at times (sometimes it even results in a black screen over the game when the choices are made out of the order the game wants) and some of the obvious clues are brushed over (why don't we measure the footprints in the very beginning?) and since I am a writer IRL, I need to point out that while I understand why they pointed out the racial inequalities during the time period, it is really awkward to see actual racial slurs when all the characters are anthropomorphic animals. especially since in the game, different species are treated equally. It's a topic that gets brushed over and doesn't even serve the purpose to make a point. There's also the little girl's gruesome death, which was so unnecessary; haven't we grown past using random female characters' deaths (especially a child) to stir people's feelings? Especially when the character served no other purpose to begin with. All this said, I still recommend this game, as it has enough good things working for it to outweigh the bad. I'm looking forward to the developers' future works.

Blacksad: Under the Bugs

TLDR: Great story, great characters, nice music. Bad gameplay, bugs and other things that will turn a lot of people off.

Ok, this will be a tough case to crack. I will tell the problems so people interested in this game be wary, but in the end I recommend it. Basically... this game won't be for everyone, not because of the story and themes nor because it's a bunch of antrophomorphic characters in a noir setting...

But because the gameplay is quite bad.

Since I played Zenith for the story (Aka a gameplay so bad that it feels like you're trying to steer a derailing train using a poweglove while abba plays), I can't say it's awful, but it's bad. It's like the telltale series had a child with l.a. noire, while smoking, drinking in a house covered by asbestos.
 • Blacksad moves INSANELY SLOW, and you have to navigate him as if he was a car.
 • Badly adapted to keyboard and mouse. Use a controller or suffer!
 • QTEs EVERYWHERE, literally EVERYWHERE, it's easier to count which conversations AREN'T timed. Literally a simple chat about buying a burger will have a timer.
 • The biggest cardinal sin of any storytelling game: You can't skip dialogues or cutscenes. Which is made worse by the fact that this game has several paths and choices. Speaking of which, some of your (a few, not many) choices will feel like curveballs in the sense that its results are unpredictable.
 • Loyalty to the comics to a fault: This will be a bit weird. This game can be played by people who haven't even heard of Blacksad, but the game features a TON of references, some that even grant achievements, some that won't make sense (for example, there are racial issues that use the character's fur color) without prior knowledge. Also the stylistic choice of drawing nearly all males like full animals and only half of the females as humanoid faces with some animal features will irk some folks who aren't familiar with the comics.
 • Voice acting ranges from really good to bad.
 • Shaky cam and sloppy combat scenes.
 • A LOT, lot of bugs. Thankfully not so many game-breaking for when the game launched, but still a lot of bugs. For example, once Blacksad's model locked eyes with one of the female characters and didn't let go. To the point of doing a 180° with his neck. I mean I can relate wanting to gaze upon a beautiful woman but never to the point of going full exorcist. I reloaded, only for Blacksad's tie to disappear. Other problems are desynch with voice and lips, character models going off-rails (nothing as bad as Ubisoft) and game over screens... immediately after reloading from a game-over.

Now, for the good: The story itself as smoother as Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher and is the main meat of why this is a positive review. At firt glance, this doesn't seem much, but its insanely easy to botch a detective story. Other genres such as action and horror can compensate a lacking point with better focus in others, but a detective story needs:

 • A good credible mystery. The whole point of the case escalates to credible points and the stakes are credibly high and never try to over-reach its grasp.
 • A good cast of characters: The great majority have distinct personalities, motivations and different stakes.
 • A good pacing: Parts of the mystery are given bit by bit, not too much at once, allowing the case to escalate.
 • And most importantly, and this is the hardest part to nail: The sense that you are a detective as well, the game giving you, the player, enough clues to piece things together before the characters, including Blacksad, can. This gives a nice feeling of 'I did it!' when your hunch is right. And in case you get lost or the hunch is wrong, the game's 'deduction system' helps you piece things together by chiming whenever you have enough clues.

And Blacksad nails all these points with flying colors. Sure, there are minor bumps on the way, but for me it was worth the ride.

Other important positive points are that this game is INSANELY loyal to the comics, while also offering wiggle room on how you'd play Blacksad. Lots of known characters are there, exactly how they behave in the comics. It also nailed the noir style to the bone without going over-the-top or in parody territory. If the devs fix the problems with this game, allowed dialogue and scene skips, I will definitely try to 100% it. And if they learn from their mistakes here, I'd be quite interested in a sequel.

Check a 15min gameplay to see if it's up your alley and/or buy it in a sale!

This game is quite amazing even comes with some minor flaws. The narrative is beautiful, the music is very well played out. The characters feel quite real and the case is pretty damn interesting by itself. The main ending is a bit...lacking, though? And if you want to replay the game you can't skip cutscenes ....so that's....unsatisfying if you'd like to see the six endings this game has to offer. All in all, I loved it and recommend it!

I really wanted to like Blacksad, since I'm a fan of both story-driven adventure games and the noir detective genre. For the first hour or so I was enjoying it, but a few frustrations crept in that really got in the way.

The main one was just how clunky and slow it is. Your character moves like you're trying to control a dump truck on ice - he's sluggish and getting him to focus on specific interaction points sometimes requires a lot of walking back and forth just to get the game to highlight what you're trying to do. This wouldn't be too big of an issue if it weren't for the timed sections where speed and precision are required.

Speaking of timed sections, it was also annoying that almost every single dialog choice has a timer. I don't mind timers for important decisions (Telltale handled this well in their series)... but 90% of choices in Blacksad have timers, adding an unnecessary urgency to everything.

Lastly, and this is purely subjective, the design of the cat characters was super offputting. All the animals in the game generally look like actual animals... except for the cats, which look like humans wearing cat makeup. Not a fan.

I stopped playing around halfway through. I don't imagine I'll bother finishing it.

Very poor performance (this is a freaking adventure game - and it runs poorly - HOW?).
The areas are way too big for how insanely slow your character walks. 90% of the playtime in this game is actual walking. There is no way to move faster.

Awful

Let me get this clear, this game is amazing!
It's scratch my itch that was solely missing since Telltale closed.
In my opinion, it is even better. It has
- Just the right length.
- A great plot twisting, captivating story.
- Great writing with good voice acting.
- Fun and interesting gameplay mechanics (deductions, card collection, choices, etc)
- Interesting character
- A great ''noir like'' style
- and overall really interesting design.

On the other hand, there are many graphical issue like
- Pretty poor depth of field, that most often than not put subjets out of focus. (I suggest you to turn the option off in the settings)
- Element that are hidden from view behind object somehow create some kind of blur on what's in front.
- Controls are not great. Movement is impaire way to often when close to wall and objects. It can be hard to navigate sometimes, and interacting with objects sometimes need specific placement that can be cumbersome.

In the end, the small issues I have encountered, are exceeded, BY FAR, by all of the positives in that excellent game!

What a great idea for a game! It just wasn't executed very well. I took larger issue with the flaws of the game than other reviewers. It seemed like for every positive, there were two negatives.

+ The story will keep you guessing (at least for a while)
- There is a false sense of choice in that most dialogue options don't branch down a new path. Also, there are times you will be offered choices that will end in your death - there is only one correct answer, so why bother?

+ The graphics are great
- But the animation is not. Characters arms clip and pass thru their body. The receptionist at the end of the game holds her hands up like she's typing but never moves, like she's frozen (but her eyes blink!). At one point it zooms in on a cigar being tapped into an ash tray.... except the ash tray is 10 inches away.

+ The voice acting is very well done
- But it doesn't match with the characters mouths at all. I understand it was translated but this was still distracting.

- The controls are bad. Character movement is slow and QTEs are way to fast/sudden at times.

- The camera is bad. You'll never find all of the hall of fame cards without a guide. You can't swing the camera around to see the full area you are in.

Disappointing but I have hope that if they make another, they can fix these issues.

A very nice Black-Noir-style adventure game, if you like point & click adventures or compareable :)

Even if the game is still lacking on a few bugs, the story is great and has to offer nice conversations
and different challenges. The localization in german is very nice made, nice phrases, voice acting, clichees etc.
The gfx style and the performance is working well after already a few patches had been done.

Wish you all nice Adventure-Weekend with this game! =)
Already awaiting John Blacksad´s coming adventures ^^

A good game that is tainted by TERRIBLE gameplay and unskippable cutscenes

This is one of these games that you wish you could give a mixed review to.

As far as the narrative goes the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep you intrigued and wanting to play the game. But the mechanics, the wonky controls and the unskippable cutscenes ( OFC no one would skip fresh cutscenes in an adventure/detective game, but imagine wanting to know other endings or having to reload the game and hear the same long conversation again, not even dialogues can be skipped) can be unbearable sometimes. So if you are really affected by those factors I would definitely not recommend buying it.

The graphics are pretty great and choices matter, though if you really want to play a DETECTIVE there are games out there that do that job better.

Would buy it on sales that offer 50% off or more.

Despite some glitches Blacksad has a brilliant story...

if you are fan of shows like Beastars where the animals kinda have their aspects you will enjoy it even more. So a brutal spiked with dangers and animals noir case to solve? Count me in. This game is a pleasure to play. Just forgive rather old style of controls. Decisions-Deductions and Soft Riddles are the meat and bones of this game. The juice lies within dialogues and scenes, brought piece by a piece with a proper music and voice acting. Emotions, feels and shocks during QTE. These are very well done, oh and I like how you basicly create your detective character through karma system. Like the usual greed-justice-neutral actions are a thing here as well.

Pendulo Studios brought about everything I would want to see as an adventure game fan, their production reminds me good times of what Telltale actually could've been if they created their works today. I enjoyed this one, a lot.

Note that I'm reviewing this as someone new to the Blacksad universe (didn't even know the comics existed) and not a big fan of Telltale-style adventure games.

I liked the art style and the film-noir atmosphere of the game. Reminded me of the Maltese Falcon. The voice acting is also good.

However, the writing is spotty. It's not bad, but not great. It feels like the game throws you in the middle of the story and brings up lots of character names, events and locations, which you need to keep track of, since you're a detective. It's too much at once. I quickly got overwhelmed.

Besides that, I don't get the whole racism angle that the game (rather ham-fistedly) keeps bringing up. Specifically, this is a universe where every character is an anthropomorphic animal, of different species. I guess it would make sense if characters were bigoted against other species, but instead they're bigoted against black animals. What the hell.

The game takes forever to load, off a high-speed SSD. I'm playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at the moment and this game takes almost as long to load as that. Except this isn't an open-world game with a high level of detail. Also, there are MANY scene changes and the game always stops to load.

The game makes you wait through all the title cards each time that it starts up. There are MANY title cards.

Let's talk about the gameplay. This is a narrative-focused game, so of course gameplay isn't super important. You have your standard time-limited dialogue choices and quick-time events. I don't like these and would rather watch a playthrough if I really cared about the story (which I don't.) Though I guess this is a subjective thing.

Finally, the controls. The game features tank controls like in the old Resident Evil games. Except it's worse, because you move REALLY slowly. It's also hard to select objects in the environment that you want to interact with. I'd rather just play this like a standard graphic adventure game and just click where I want to go. But of course this game is designed with console controls in mind, so it's designed for a controller, not a mouse.

What saves this game is its narrative. The controls are clunky as hell, for significant parts of the game access to the deductions menu is cut off leaving me to try and play catchup as soon as I caught a break, the detective narrates just when the action is at a crescendo, as is the music, so it both ruins the mood the devs were going for and leaves you wondering what the hell Blacksad said. And then theres Blacksads english voiceacting. One listen to the spanish voiceacting and I can already tell the original language is worlds better.

But the narrative makes up for it. Bear with the annoying design choices and the clunk and youll have a diamond in the rough on your hands.

The Good
- Decent branching story
- Decent dialogue and characters (mostly)
- Good visuals (mostly)
- Very similar to Telltale Games (if your desperate for that)

The Neutral
- Point and click style game

The Bad
- Technicals (Pretty glitchy and broken in places)
- Tank controls (similar to Telltale Games)
- Rare and not very intuitive quick time events
- The design and voice work for the main character is pretty bad in places
- Can't skip cutscenes or dialogue you've already seen
- There's quite a few death scenes you can't really predict

Very neutral for a good portion of this game, but personally I lean more towards not recommending. Especially after the ending, which I felt wasn't built up to well. Just didn't really leave me feeling satisfied at the end of the story. In the respect that everything didn't come together in the end in a way that made sense to me. I also didn't care too much for the design of the main character. A lot of the supporting characters look better designed to me. On comparing with the comic, the design also looks better there I think, more dynamic. Adding into this, although the voice actor was a good fit for the role, the delivery was pretty bad in a lot of places, not a lot of emoting. Could be a direction issue I suppose. So it left me iffy on following the lead throughout the story.

Also there was quite a bit of technical problems I found. Had to restart the game to fix a few, which was pretty painful with this game, as you can't skip dialogue or cut-scenes. In relation to this, with the random quick time events and sometimes seemingly unpreventable deaths. I ended up staring at the wall for quite some time, just waiting for scenes to complete that I'd already seen. There was a few other odd glitches, but to be fair, I've seen similar in Telltale games. A few story hiccups I expect for a branching story like this.

At the end of this game, I just felt like I'd wasted a good portion of my time really, as the noir ending didn't really seem built up to in a deserved way that made me care about it. It's not a bad game necessarily, and I can understand why people like it, but for me it felt like a bit of a waste. At the very least I might check out the comic, as that did look pretty good.

I really wish I could recommend this game. I like the comics, and the story in this video game adaption was faithful to the originals and excellent right to the end.

It's a real shame that they managed to mess up the technical side of things. The team really should have had more programmers and time – this should not be considered ready for release. The constant bugs, stuttering, slow walking pace and QTE mechanics break the immersion constantly and make this a bad game.

The most noticeable issue was in the scene at the Chinese restaurant. The screen went black and I had to pick choices blindly. I couldn't proceed, so I tried restarting the game and it happened again. Eventually I managed to get through the scene.

The Hall of Fame collectible card mechanic is especially annoying because you need to focus on collecting everything on the screen before the story progression takes you elsewhere. Sometimes you can see the pieces right after, but you can't interact with them as you were supposed to pick them up in a special camera position. I gave up on the cards after realizing that it's completely pointless.

I want to see more games about Blacksad, as I think it translates really well into a video game, but I would be very, very careful before buying sequels after seeing this travesty.

The story is great. However, this is not canon or tied to the comic books.
Aside from the story, the gameplay is boring, slow, and weird. TellTale did a better job than this.
The game is filled with glitches! I had to force shut the game 3 times, and thanks to the awful save system, it did not save my progress. So I had to replay some sections.
Some choices may end up killing you, and you have to replay the cutscence again. Which is very boring to be honest. The story also feels unfinished, but I don't want to spoil it too much.
I honestly would rather buy the comic books.

This was a really interesting noir detective game that keeps you on your toes right up until the end and with six different endings, the choices you make throughout the game matter and you can craft what kind of person you want to be: the heartless, cold detective who must solve the case whatever means necessary or the more sympathetic detective that tries to help people along the way and maintain personal and professional relationships by tactfully deciding which information to reveal to each person (if any). The soundtrack is also really good :)

Overall, I really liked this game and the only gripe I had was that the keyboard and mouse controls were really bad and if you are to play this game I cannot recommend playing with a controller enough.

TL;DR
- Play if you like noir detective games
- Play with a controller

My experience with the Blacksad graphic novels is limited to two of the books, but the amount of care and love to it’s source material is apparent from the minute you start.
Blacksad’s character and setting is captured perfectly, and askde of some few returning characters, the cast is a fresh set of questionable people getting pulled in a new story.

The best way I can describe the gameplay is as a mixture of early TellTale’s adventure games with L.A Noire. You talk to characters, try to find clues, and explore small areas to find conclusive information that can lead to deductions. The game is fairly linear, but you have a lot of wiggle to figure things for yourself and make John your own.

The game does have some immersion shattering technical issues, and the ocasional QTE that forced rewatching a cutscene to retry, both huge detriments to the game after it builds atmosphere and engaging narrative so seemlessly. The music is great, the acting is well done and the mayority of the enviorments are dripping in mood. It’s a pity these problems hurt the moment but atleast to me they were not harmful enough to detriment the entire experience.

It’s a good game, specially in the narrative and adventure game aspects, and if you can put up with these flaws it’s more than worth the time.

This is the best game I can't recommend to anyone. While the athmosphere, characters, art, plot and music are really good, the controls are so bad you'll tear your hair off fighting through first 3 or so QTEs. Bugs and pixel-hunting (should I sau hotspot-hunting?) don't help, either. I shudder to think what this game was like before patches.

Blacksad is definitely a good game if you're searching for a noir style detective game. Tho, it also has quite a few flaws. The movements can be a little bit of annoyance. Also, there is this one moment when you're supposed to guide your flashlight's light where I found quite annoying to manouver. Last problem I can point out would be the speech, how it sometimes continue to the next speech before finishing the current one. But overall, I can still say that the game is enjoyable to me.

+ The atmosphere is well done, it reminds me of LA Noire in a way (yes I know, other coast, but still).

- Without a controller the controls are clunky at best. If you're going to port a game to PC, have a mouse on the menu. Allow for key rebinding. F1 to view my clues? Allow me to press Tab.

- The character feels like a behemoth to walk around. The camera is slow to follow, the character moves slowly. WASD doesn't feel like it always works or registers.

- Sometimes the game takes all control from you, so you can't even pause the game through the Escape menu.

- Furthermore the game is very misophonia unfriendly, characters slurp, cough and make other unpleasant noises a little too often.

- Savepoints seem very random, pick the wrong option during an interview? Next scene will trigger, game will save and you'll have to rollback to get all other questions in.

- Conversations are usually timed, out of which half the time the timer goes by so fast you're barely able to read all responses let alone think about them.

- Voice-acting seems out of place for quite a few characters. Also lip-sync is nearly non-existent.

Prior to playing this game I already read all of the Blacksad comics, a gritty noir series featuring antropomorphic characters. I mostly enjoyed the game as a way to put myself within one of those stories. It's an engaging story which also explores themes like race and corruption while remaining entertaining. The games in different languages which, for me allowed me to replay it in a different language(s) that I'm currently learning. What better way to learn and have fun at the same time?!

However, the gameplay, clunky controls, bugs and glitches are a let-down. When replaying the game, cut-scenes cannot be skipped. I have replayed the game 2x and yet haven't obtained all the achievements, so if your objective is to obtain 100% of the achievements, I do not recommend it.

I hope Blacksad: Under the Skin is only the first entry in a long, successful franchise. I finished it in basically two sittings, which is quite a record for me for an adventure game these days. I could have done it in one had I not started it on a weekday late at night. Excellent story, captivating characters and perfect noir mood. I can't recommend it enough.

If you are a fan of narrative-dirven projects, the detective genre and detective videogame mechanics (searching for evidence, speaking to people, piecing together the clues, etc.), the game is definitely for you. Overall, I really enjoyed playing it, except for a couple of things. The first is how the game often makes the decision for you. I don't want to go into specific situations to avoid spoilers, but sometimes the story just proceeds without your approval, and as a player, you feel like a backseat passenger in a car driven by an unpredictable driver. The second is, of course, the bugs that are still there over a year after the release. The game often went out of focus in dialogs, the textures were flashing, and the lipsync was missing the point way too often. Nevertheless, as I have said at the beginning, if this is your genre, the bugs and issues won't stand in the way of you having a good time (like it was in my case!).

It is a good game but things that can improve:

-Rigid movement, specially inside buildings when you want that one card and you have to go in circles to get the action button to collect it.
-Skip Dialogue/lines. This is one of the annoying things of it.
-Timed dialogue, sometimes it is with good speed other times is annoying.
-Better gaming mechanics, walking and collecting thoughts isn't engaging.
-LET ME RUN/Fast Walk. MY GOD THE WALKING SPEED MAKES ME DIE OF OLD AGE.
-Glitches are less after some patches, and mouth sound sync issue at the last cutscene.
-Choosing from menu to replay specific chapters.

It is an enjoyable game with annoyance here and there. I will buy another game with same world if the devs continue. I like detective games and I can tolerate the issues of the game.

A game that has good story, music and art style. Really wanted to give it a thumbs up...

But boy is it annoying to play. So many issues with the gameplay.
Inexplicable frame drops, cutscenes going out of focus for no apparent reason, the movement is clunky and horrible, and its way slower than its supposed to be, there's weird white dots flashing at 4k.

Its a good game if you're patient enough to deal with the many MANY gameplay issues, and all these bugs should've been fixed by 2021.

I have been a fan of the Blacksad universe for some time now, and so I was very eager to get my hands on Under the Skin. I was not disappointed by any means, this is both a very good narrative game and a Blacksad adaptation to videogames as well.

Blacksad: Under the Skin is a narrative adventure heavily focused on characters and worldbuilding. Since we control Blacksad, the titular private investigator, the gameplay leans towards the investigation topic as well, with some quite appealing design decissions. When we discover the proper amount of clues, we can use the detective’s “thoughts cloud” to match all of Blacksad’s ideas and crack every loose end of the case, which makes us the catalysts that make the plot progress since we are putting all the pieces together inside the mind of the protagonist. Also, when we are directly controlling him our mission is to search the environment for those clues, so the deduction process becomes very organic as the thoughts we match derive from the clues we are obtaining in our own investigation.

But Blacksad is not just a detective, but a cat as well, so he holds some aces up his sleeve in the shape of “enhanced abilities” such as very acute senses of sight, smell and hearing. Those perks can be very useful in specific moments of the adventure to gain special insight over some characters, items or environments, helping us to solve the case. They will assist us in getting out of some nasty situations from time to time.

Also, you should expect a lot of talking since Under the Skin is a game that has a very big focus on conversations and interactions with other characters. In that regard, the writing has a huge quality and is among the very best titles you can currently find of this genre; the characters are all well defined with their own personal traits and quirks, the dialogues have a lot of juice and the 50’s period setting is perfectly depicted. Not only that, this game absolutely captures the essence of the comics it derives from, making it a real joy for the fan.

There are a lot of decissions and different outcomes to explore in almost every conversation, too. We can define the personality of Blacksad with our interactions and also expect different reactions from the world and other characters depending on how we reacted in the past. It’s a system that has a decent amount of depth and it is very much welcome to spice things up a little and give us more agency over the protagonist, making it our own (to some extent).

In terms of its atmosphere, I’d say I pretty much loved everything. The visuals of the environments put a lot of effort into transporting us to the game’s world, the anthropomorphic characters modelling is very good and reflects their personality with great detail by taking advantage of their animal features, and the audio direction hits the nail specially with the superb voice acting and the soundtrack. Audiovisually speaking, they accurately pulled off the noir detective story in classic american films.

On a less positive note, the controls are a bit clunky and limited, but we just need to walk around and interact with the scenario so it’s not really that much of an issue. It is a narrative adventure after all, so there are not a lot of dynamic actions involved.

In any case, a great experience for both adventure games lovers and Blacksad fans alike. Give it a shot.

Blacksad is a buggy, buggy mess. I can't even see if it's any good because I can't get past the tutorial. It has crashed repeatedly out of the box and has single-handedly blue screened my computer four times in one hour. No other game has done something like this, and I'm frankly tired of troubleshooting and would rather just get my money back and get something else. It's a shame, too, I've heard plenty of good things about this title and was expecting to really enjoy it. Sad that technical issues ruin it so.

This game is like a good telltale game, inheriting all the good but also the bad traits of those games.

The story is excellent if you like noir-like detective stories. Don't be put off by the anthromorphic animals, that doesn't make the story childich, it's actually pretty dark at times.

The controls for walking around feel terribly clunky for both controller and keyboard and mouse, it takes multiple seconds for the character to just get going into the direction you want him to. There is a passage where you control your character and the flashlight he's holding separately and it feels awful. You cannot rebind keyboard keys.

Just like in Telltale's games, the consequences of your choices are really small and the story is extremely linear. There a bunch of things you can change, even characters who can die, but most of the time, they wouldn't show up later anyway and are never mentioned again. It's all just for your head canon to decide who deserves to live and who deserves to die.

The English voice acting is really good and the main character has a wide emotional range, even though he sounds like a typical hard-boiled detective at first glance.

I'd say, since Blacksad doesn't have much replayability (except when you mess up and really want certain characters to survive for your head canon), it really isn't worth 40€, so buy it at a sale. It took me about 13 hours to finish, and I didn't hurry up and replayed some of the scenes to look if there are other outcomes.

While it's a little rough around the edges on both a technical and sometimes gameplay level, I still found myself invested and happily wanted to see it through to the end.

I've seen other games try to mimic the Telltale style of adventure game before, but usually it's only surface, not really understanding why the choices are there. This game, while not necessarily doing much new, still uses the illusion of choice well to keep you intrigued and make sure you pay attention. It simply fits well with this type of genre, helping keeping a flow from moment to moment.

That said, there are a few too many times that flow is broken by some odd design choices. While it accomplishes creating the atmosphere it's going for, there are a few times where either animations, oddly synced audio, glitches, or just straight up counter-intuitive choices presented to the player as valid will cause your momentum to grind to a halt. Fortunately, whenever you need to retry a section it doesn't take long to get back in. The worst I can say is that simply moving around the areas feels unresponsive, clumsy and stiff. It says a lot that operating a forklift in this game was more comfortable than actually walking around. Still, I didn't get this to have a silky smooth walking simulator. I wanted to solve an interesting mystery, and that's what I got.

Personally, I'd say it's well worth your time.

I lost money on this game but you don't have to!

I was unable to make it past the first office section due to a freezing bug, but even in that short time the game was committing cardinal design sins with alarming frequency. There are multiple QTEs and conversation options that result in an instant game over, which do not pair well with unskippable dialogue and cutscenes. My 45-minute session featured maybe 5 minutes of interactivity with the remainder of the time spent rewatching scenes after bugs prompted a reload (and eventually a restart).

Lowering the graphics settings introduced more glitches: the walls started flickering to reveal the street outside the office. There's a loading screen to enter/leave the settings, something I don't think I've encountered in a commercial game before. I even tried reinstalling and verifying the files to no avail.

AVOID

I would really like to be able to recommend this game. I cant. Im playing it, right now, but unfortunately, some puzzle choices dont make sense, theres very little to explore...and then theres the real nail in the coffin for this one. You cant run. You have to walk around, painfully slowly in all scenes. Its very frustrating. But all that aside, I still like the game. What is the real problem is how buggy it is. Sometimes, youll see a flash of something you can interact with, sometimes -- even mission critical stuff. But it disappears faster than you can react. So you have to this weird in and out thing, stopping the character and *hoping* the promt will be there for you to interact with....<---That shit, is horrible, ive had to do it almost pixel by pixel, moving blacksad inch by inch just trying to get a piece of evidence to move on. Thats what kills this game. The style choices, puzzle choices and etc....are an opinion thing. They chose what they wanted to do with that when they developed this. The bugs, makes the game almost unplayable. Its kind of sad, I really like this, but it is a frustrating mess.

The choices and characters of Wolf Among Us, with the story and setting of L.A. Noire, and the gameplay mechanics with quirky humor of Sam & Max, somehow combined beautifully well. Great story, with standard visuals, and gameplay. Mostly Highlighting and selecting clues/collectibles with free movement of your character. I would play any sequel without hesitation. I enjoyed it more than most games I have played this year, and I felt a more significant impact over my decisions in this game's progression & ending, than when I was playing Cyberpunk. That is just my 2 cents though.

I eagerly hope for more. That's when I know I played a good game.

I really enjoyed playing Blacksad. The game reminds me of the Telltale game 'The Wolf Among Us' which I am a big fan of:

Pros
 • Good visuals
 • Amazing voice actors
 • Suitable music for the period that the game plays in
 • Interesting story
 • A lot of choices that will impact the story and future choices

Cons
 • Bugs that influence the game experience (unfocused objects)
 • No manual saving option (at least I couldn't found one)
 • Animations from the characters sometimes look stiff

Overall, I can recommend the game, although I think the price without a sale is a little bit too much. If it is on sale, it is completely worth it.

I told myself I would play a couple of chapters only but ended up finishing the game in one sitting. The story's very gripping and the characters are memorable. Think Zootopia but New York crime noir style.

I did experience a couple of bugs (Blacksad's head stuck facing a certain direction or the flashlight pointing the opposite way). The flashlight glitch almost broke me
O'Leary's basement HQ as I couldn't select the right hotspot for clues if I have to reverse control a freakin torch
All in all... highly recommended for those who like the Sherlock Holmes detective games. I must say Blacksad is a lot more interesting and fun.

Excellent Detective noir game lots of atmosphere and tons of Tropes you would expect to see from a game with this kind of theme/setting. Excellent music and voice acting help the story glide along like thick cigarette smoke in a dingy old Jazz club. It's all here! great mechanics really help you get immersed into the role and you'll allways be second guessing yourself. It is a great game and highly recommended.

Blacksad is a great game with a nice art style. A detective story with a touch of humor and where every step must be thoughtful so as not to be beaten, killed, or some kind of bad end. You will need to find a particular approach to everyone in this game.

The plot does a nice job of keeping tension throughout the game. It’s important to be careful and not miss details since the observant can find clues hidden in plain sight, though sometimes they are well hidden. Blacksad captivates the player with its colorful and interesting characters, beautiful locations, and most often your moral choices,

Unfortunately this game can also put off players with its inconvenient camera positioning and viewing angles, along with some technical problems I ran into. Despite those technical shortcomings though, the game will likely cause a lot of positive emotions due to the plot and how twisted it can get, the interesting style, and its pleasant Jazz soundtrack.

Clearly trying to slip into the vacancy left by the collapse of Telltale, I had high-hopes for this translation of Blacksad. I'm a long-time fan of the comic and was so excited to see it, even paying full price for the game.

And in some ways this game is great: the graphics are solid, the mystery engaging, and the sound design really on point.

However, the controls are so janky and the game so buggy that, while I did complete the game and enjoy it (not reflected in the playtime as I finished it offline), this was a grudging enjoyment and I certainly could NOT recommend this experience...and at this price I expect a lot more effort from a dev. Honestly, spend your money on the comics instead.

The game has gripping and intriguing noire story that keeps you glued from start to finish. Unfortunately it's buggy and unpolished mess with bad lip-syncing, long loading times, out of place animations/music and annoying bugs. Feels like the game could have used more time being finished up. i still recommend playing the game for the story but it can be an effort to play sometimes.

An amazing crime drama with cliches all along the way with a few little twists in there to spice things up. Although the game has replayability in its wonderful content and different possible endings, the actual controls and the inability to skip cutscenes is tedious and downright awful.

Blacksad is a cat detective, but in actuality he is a mecha-cat that is harder to control than a forklift. He slowly saunters around as his only default movement speed, and constantly gets stuck on objects he shouldn't get stuck on. Interacting with the environment is finnicky at best.

All in all 7/10 game. Cool and interesting story keeps you entertained (more so in the second half) that is cheapened and butchered by some really uncooperative in-game controls.

Blacksad: Under the Skin

DISCLAIMER: I received this product for no cost for the purpose of reviewing. However, this does not affect my views and opinions of the game.

Short Review

BLACKSAD: Under the Skin is a dark and gritty detective style game. The game is very story driven and littered with quick-time events to keep you on your toes. The game is based on a comic-book of the same name.

--------

Graphics: 9 / 10

The graphic are one of the biggest things this title has to offer. The whole 50's New York style is very well done. The character design and world itself not only looks great; but play very well into the dark theme of the title. The animation and quick time events are also well done.

--------

Sound: 8 / 10

The background music fits the theme of the game incredibly well. The game is fully voice-acted with a great cast of voices.

--------

Mechanics: 7 / 10

There are not a lot of mechanics involved with the game as it is very story driven. You play as John Blacksad a detective. A lot of the time is spent exploring areas and gathering clues and information, which can be pieced together to progress the story.

There are of course very unforgiving quick time events that could wind up with the player dying, so there is some skill involved. That being said, there are checkpoints scattered throughout the game.

One of the unique things about the title is a mode that detective Blacksad can enter that allows him to pick up on more subtle information. Time slows down and the player is able to zero in on details about another character and even take account of their vital signs.

--------

Thanks to the developer for giving me the opportunity to review the title, as well as anyone who took this review into consideration, I hope it helped.

Everything is slow. Your character is slow, the story is slow, they give you way to long to read short sentences to the point that I was playing a second game to occupy my time during the unnecessarily long cut scenes and random atmospheric shots that were cool for 10 seconds, but not a full 2-3 minutes, but godforbid you look away for one second and miss a random screen interaction request (these requests don't happen often enough, are not difficult enough to be fun, and don't actually affect the outcome of the scene all that much). I love story-telling, puzzle, and decision games, and had hoped this would be a fun blend of those three interests, but it really wasn't enough of any of those things to be enjoyable. I'll probably pick the game up at some point once I've made it through my library of other unplayed games, but I was bored and just never picked the game back up after logging off for the first time.

Blacksad: Under the Skin is a good game, but a rather unpolished one. It plays very similarly to the Telltale style and is reminiscent of The Wolf Among Us due to its grimy New York crime setting and visuals. You can expect a choice in dialogue options, free exploration of larger areas to find clues, making deductions by linking together your findings and examining characters (like in recent Sherlock games) and some quick-time events (QTEs) scattered here and there in the action cutscenes. As far as I know, the game is an interactive adaptation of a comic book series and features a brand new story not seen in the comics.

The Good

 • The story. I really liked Blacksad's story; I was intrigued and immersed in the mystery throughout the whole game. The plot was neither obvious nor horrifically convoluted, and for the most part the game prompts you towards figuring things out so you aren't left confused. There's a good balance between dramatic sequences and more personal sections, and there were a few developments that were particularly unexpected and impressed me. The only downside is that it's a bit slow to start and requires your patience as you figure out what's going on.
 • The style and visuals. Blacksad is set in post-WWII New York, in which you work as a private detective. I thought that the team pulled this setting off very well. The visual style of the game is quite nice, and I especially like how the devs have done the character models. There is less of a comic book feel than in, for example, Telltale games, but the game suits its visuals and looks very good. The anthropomorphic characters also look far better than I expected them to; I particularly liked how Hitler was made a cat (lol). Where are their tails though?!
 • Music and Soundtrack. The music wasn't incredibly memorable, but I think it suited the setting quite well. You'd have some light jazz playing most of the time, and there would be noticeable changes to let you know when you were getting close to something important. I only wish it had been a bit more exciting on certain dramatic sections.
When O'Leary shoots Jimmy it felt really anti-climatic to me: I think having a more dramatic track playing (and more blood!) would have improved this scene a lot.
The OK/Mediocre

 • Exploration. I liked that you are allowed to roam freely to find clues at your own pace. However, some of the camera angles were... very frustrating. It was hard to get a good view of certain spaces and it seriously interfered with getting collectibles. I would also sometimes interact with an object that would basically force me to progress before I could fully explore everything I wanted to and there would be no option to go back except to load to an unclear checkpoint.
 • Movement. This has been brought up in plenty of other reviews but controlling Blacksad just feels awkward and clunky. He also moves very slowly, which can get annoying.
 • Voice-acting. The voice-acting in Blacksad was on the whole pretty good. There were only a few sections where something like grief didn't sound quite right and fell flat, but otherwise it wasn't bad. However, there were times when the audio files glitched out or something, and a line would just cut off in the middle. Now and then the subtitles would also not match with the actual speech but this was never bad enough to seriously confuse you. This wasn't game-breaking but it made the game feel kind of rough and unpolished. I do recommend turning on subtitles to make up for the cut-off lines.

The Bad

 • No skipping?? This I found straight up ridiculous. How are you going to make a story-based game and not allow the player to skip dialogue or cutscenes?? When you load to a previous checkpoint you're often forced to sit through tediously long sections of speech and it really limits replayability of the game overall. PLEASE LET US SKIP WE ARE BEGGING YOU
 • Collectibles. The game features collectibles in the form of trading cards of famous athletes. At first, I really liked this idea. The cards themselves look really nice, too. But there are 100 of them and their spawning locations are randomised, so there is no general guide to getting them. Microids have made a guide on all the possible spawn locations, but going through all 160 is really time-consuming and the whole thing just could have been done better. This only affects achievement hunters though, so don't worry about it if you aren't bothered about 100%ing.
 • Loading. As you play through the game you can load back to previous scenes to redo your choices or find things you missed. I liked that this is done in a comic book format and you end up with the whole story drawn out in the end. Unfortunately, you can't load to any specific points and if you're in the middle of a scene and made a choice you didn't like, the last checkpoint will often be way too far back and if you load you'll be stuck sitting through a scene you just watched. The menu that lets you load to your last checkpoint also never makes it clear what you had last done so you're always taking a gamble when you choose to go back.

Conclusion

Rating: 7.5/10

Don't get me wrong - Blacksad is a fantastic detective game. I loved the story, the plot was exciting and interesting and the game was well-paced. The whole time you're uncovering new things bit by bit and seeing how deep the mystery really goes. The game also features darker themes like corruption, suicide and struggling with racism. The noir New York setting works really well and the cast is full of loveable characters who all look great in the visual style. So, yes, I do recommend it.
But wait for a sale. It does not feel polished enough for its price and, while the gameplay is good, it's neither revolutionary/new (you'd see the same mechanics in a Sherlock or Telltale game) nor that smooth.
Some achievements were even glitched so badly that they were impossible to get, but I think this has thankfully been fixed in a recent patch. Here's hoping that they add a skip function.

It's a fun game with a brilliant story, but be prepared to get a little frustrated and train your patience.

This is hard cuz i love the blacksad comics.

Game isnt worth $40, and this is apparent within the first few minutes of playing. Overall gameplay is clunky compared to other games in the genre. Camera always seems to be pointing in weird directions. From what i experienced, the voice acting isnt exactly inspired and the cutscenes just felt awkward which wouldnt be a big deal if this game had a $10 price tag, and if i had gone into this game with $10 worth the expectation, i would not have refunded.

I'm sure the story probably opens up and becomes fairly interesting, maybe, and some of the mechanics that separate this from the average telltale game might pique interest, but after a short time playing i could just tell playing further in would just end up becoming a frustrating chore.

A Zootopia for adults?

Blacksad: Under the Skin is an entertaining detective game. Even though the characters are animals and therefore look kid friendly, the game is quite brutal and dark. I was surprised,
how many characters get killed on screen.
Not to mention
how graphic your own deaths and fails are.
Be aware that this is not an open world detective game. You jump from scene to scene, which sounds boring first, but it ensures a steady pace and makes it more like a movie.
And, by the way, there is no such thing as a Zootopia for adults. It’s a good film, no matter your age.

Pretty good detective game, but not really worth $40. Pretty nice, stylized graphics. Story was intriguing, but in the end, it turned out to be clichéd. Gameplay is similar to gameplay in Telltale games. Some cutscenes had awkward pauses where there was just silence for a few seconds while the characters just looked at each other. Nothing in this game stood out as amazing to me. If you want to play a great detective game, play Return of the Obra Dinn. If you just want to follow an average detective story, wait for a sale and then buy this game.

You should give it a go. I loooove detective games and I avoided this one for so long because of the whole cats and dogs and animals thing, also it seemed like from the trailer that it was more walking from cutscene to cutscene. But then steam summer sale happened and I scooped it up along with a lil hoard. And i tried this one first and was: pleasantly surprised. The detective aspect was cool, I like the deducting and putting clues together, and making up hypthesis along with it being choices matter. It makes it fun to play. And gives it potential replayability. Great characters, voiceacting, plot. There is the same control issue as in Siberia 3. Obviously they havent worked on improving that, but I hope they will in the future, because they do make amazing games. I didnt put this game down for three days, and Im usually a scattergamer. So MUST play with a controller, and be patient with the flow. It will come. And then for some reason, they put in collectible cards. I found that tedious, I hope it doesnt become a trend. You could ignore them, but...can you? In a find clues-game? Nope. You HAVE to pick up everything or your brain will shut down and the world will end. Thats just how it is. Yes, my brain does run the whole universe. I'm 42. You're welcome.

I rarely write reviews (this might be my first on steam) but I felt that this game is extremely underrated and deserves more visibility. For anyone who likes detective stories and/or adventure games this is a definite must!

Let's start with the GOOD:
- The story is compelling and well-written, resembling a classic 50s film noir or detective novel.
- The characters are interesting and complex. You get hints about their motives but there is always more below the surface.
- You feel like your decisions matter both in solving the case and in shaping the main character. Something that, in my opinion, was largely problematic with late Telltale games.

I have to also mention some BAD details (minor for me), that might be important to certain types of gamers:
- The game is very hard with mouse and keyboard. I strongly recommend using a controller.
- This is an adventure game that resembles old-school ones (e.g. Sam and Max and Monkey Island) and incorporates elements from the Telltale formula. This means that it is slow-paced at times and people who want quick action will find Blacksad's walks kind of slow and dragging. However compared to Guybrush's walks on Plunder Island, it feels like he is running.
- Close to the end it feels that the developers wanted to add more content and some interactions feel a bit forced. For me, this does not spoil the whole experience however.

This is a very mixed bag of a game, and here's why.
Pros:
- Great plot
- Interesting world
- Interesting characters that I actually cared about
- Meaningful decisions (in places)

Cons:
- Woeful character movement. It's slow and you get stuck on every surface you get anywhere near, to the point that turning around on the spot is genuinely a pain.
- Ridiculously precise location for prompts to inspect clues. You can spend 10 minutes bumping into an object waiting for the prompt to appear as you know you have to inspect that object to proceed. This happened more than once.
- Quite buggy. I didn't come across too many bugs, but the game did freeze on me a few times and I had to close it in task manager.
- General quality issues. For example, camera was out of focus in cutscenes quite a lot, and speech wasn't even sort of synced up with facial movements. The kind of stuff that QA should really have picked up on.

All in all, interesting and engaging plot for those who enjoy it, if you're prepared to slog your way through the gameplay.

Overall score: 5/10
Wait for sale.

Blacksad is a great adventure / noir detective game. I am not familiar with the source material but this game made me really interested in the Blacksad universe and I will be checking out the comics.

There are some technical issues, but nothing major a few times it wouldn't recognize my button presses and performance would drop in certain scenes.

Voice acting and writing is really great, the mystery of the case is very interesting and kept me engaged and guessing right up to the end. The deduction system to put together different pieces of information you pick up is fun and well done. The look of the game is really good and a great soundtrack.

I actually really enjoy this game. The problem is that it is super buggy. I am about 4 hours into this game and encountered a game-stopping glitch. I can not progress further in this game and my only option is to restart entirely. My fear is that this will happen again towards the end of the game. I'm going to be annoyed if I am constantly replaying the beginning of this game over and over.

Be a detective, be a cat, deal with racial issues from the late 50's early 60's. Solve the case, be super smart! Drugs are bad!

Pros:
-Great story
-Awesome music
-Great Voice work
-Feel smart
-Pointless collectibles
-Help a poor pedophile get the well deserved shotgun blast to the chest that he desperately needs
-No furry boobs or dicks

Cons:
-Some graphical bugs
-Some audio bugs
-Some bugs where you lose the ability to move and have to restart the game (only happened once)
-Really hard to reach pointless collectibles
-I only got to see that pedophile get shot to death once
-No furry boobs or dicks.

This game is good, you should play it.

Now there are two ways you can look at this game: as a game and as a story.

Storywise, I wouldn't go as far as call it a masterpiece but it can easily rival all of Telltale titles, which I personally find pretty good. So if you are a fan of good stories like The Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us and the like, you've come to the right place. You won't get disappointed. To prove my point I'd like to say that what sets a good story from a mediocre one for me is that feeling you get after finishing it, that aftertaste, that lingering sensation that makes you wanna come back to that world that the story had created and stay a part of it for a little while longer. At the moment of writing this review I'm still experiencing this sensation and it's unlikely to wear off soon. Those of you who enjoy good stories should know what I'm talking about. I won't give any spoilers, just try it, you'll get taken away instantly.

Now gameplaywise, this game's probably gonna make you ragequit on multiple occassions: the character moves really slowly and stumbles onto walls all the time, areas of interaction are highlighted only when the character is nearby and looks directly at it, some decisions are taken away from you so you'll have to make your piece with that, sometimes there's only one option in the dialogue that doesn't result in the protagonist's immediate demise so by means of trial and error you'll need to figure out which one is that, cutscenes are unskippable so after you die you have to watch them all over again - these are a few that come to mind, but I'll stop here to give a piece of advice: if these issues take the better of you, take a deep breath and come back in a while. The story is worth it. You gotta struggle through the clunky gameplay to get to the end. That's how I managed.

Something I'd like to add: while I was completely captivated by the story, do not expect it to end in a big 'Wow!' In fact, I knew all along how it was gonna end but still I wanted the plot to play out just to see whether I was right and when it turned out I was I still wasn't in the least disappointed.

The overall atmosphere adds significantly to the enjoyment: the whole noir thing is something not typical to my culture so it was an insightful experience.

Oh, and all the characters are anthropomorphic animals! Whether it's a plus or a minus I can't say. Still haven't made up my mind about it, but I think the choice of animals and voice actors for each character was thorough and thought-through.

John Blacksad made his way from comics into the video-games world. In a noir detective story not based on any of the comic books, they introduced a whole new world and some new characters. The story starts off New York City where Joe Dunn, an owner of a boxing club is found dead. You, as John Blacksad, a private investigator will be hired to investigate this incident by his daughter Soniya. Keep in mind the story is pretty dark and has lots of twist and change of events, it also has six different endings, all rely on your actions and choices.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2022054628

The gameplay is nice, you can walk around and explore, however you can't interact with everyone you see around, When Blacksad gets an objective you can only interact with the items around, the investigation relies mostly on what they've left behind, and then he gets ideas which you should match together to get another clue. You can also shape the personality of your character depends on your reactions. What matters the most is your reactions and choices which take me to the next part. The QTE 'quick time event' oh my god they are the worst, you need to quickly mash some buttons in order to complete a certain event, and if you don't, you'll fail. I honestly disliked those parts.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2022055041

What I loved the most is the character's design, they did an amazing job with the details and personalities. The areas are ok, didn't blow me off as much as the characters look. The Jazzy soundtracks are nice, fits the atmosphere and story perfectly. The voice-overs are nice, however, the main character's voice sounds pretty weak in my opinion.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2037029043

The game crashed on me a couple of times, it is pretty buggy, especially the clunky controlling, I tried both keyboard and controller, I still had the same issue. Sometimes I see the object but I can't highlight it or pick it up. It was annoying, I also didn't enjoy collecting the cards at all as if you miss one of them you will not be able to return to the previous location, there is no fast traveling map, but you can return to the previous chapters from the chapter select option.

Pros:
+Cool characters design
+Very well-done detective story.
+Good Jazz soundtracks.
+Useful journal, full of information.
+Clues matching board.
+Chapter select.
+OK voice-over (Except for the main character)
+Multiple endings.
+Steam achievements.

Cons:
-Collectibles (Very annoying to spot and collect)
-Crashed too many times (Has bugs)
-Cluncky controlling. (Tried both keyboard and controller, it is the same)
-Way too many QTE.

All in all the game is good, it has a good story, good characters, there is a replay value if you care to watch all the six endings and outcomes. What bothers me is the bugs, nothing game breaking though.

I can only barely recommend this game.

Pros:
- Interesting, surprisingly mature story
- Decent graphics
- Good voice acting (minus one character)
- Deductions seem logical and meaningful

Cons:
- The voice actor for Blacksad is awful
- Movement is slow and tedious
- Some QTE sections feel random, like a game of Simon
- Strange performance on high refresh rate monitors

Overall, I had a good time with it, but coming from playing The Wolf Among Us, this game seemed like kind of a let down. If you are waiting for The Wolf Among Us 2, this game will hold you over, but it will leave you wanting more.

It is absolutely a very well plotted visual novel. If you like LA Noire, you're gonna love this game too! Go ahead and check your moral compass!

This game is LA Noire meets... Zootopia haha with the storyline/mechanics of a tell tale game such as The Wolf Among Us. I am really enjoying it, but the controls are frustrating and buggy with lots of freezing, and needing to spend a crazy amount of time to make an option to interact with something pop up. The goals aren't always clear and you can spend a lot of time in an area trying to trigger what happens next. It deals with racism but it's kinda done in a confusing way. Takes place post ww2. Why don't they have tails? Still look better than the movie cats though. Based on a comic series. Mostly enjoyable, but would be nice if they could address the bugs. Maybe buy it on sale.

John Blacksad is a former soldier and currently a private dedective (also a cat) in 50's of America and he happens to involve in a corruption case in sports which led to death of some gym owner. The storyline involves war, politics and racisim as well as in the graphic novels. As a big time follower of the series, I definetly can say that this game offers everything the graphic novels posses. The story is sufficient enough and it fools you a lot like the stories in the graphic novels. It's also good to see the other characters in the game and their voicing just fits how they look. The noir atmosphere and the interior design is another thing that makes you tase the Blacksad universe. One drawback is the action mechanics of the game that needs to be improved. but generally this is a must play game.

Blacksad: Under The Skin is a new standalone story set in the same universe as the French graphic novel series about a 1950’s American Private Investigator John Blacksad. It looks and sounds amazing, but is its brilliance only skin deep?

Blacksad, like its protagonist is beautifully flawed and very human… even though it’s about a bunch of bad guys who often look and act like animals. It’s occasionally clunky, but I’m so glad it exists. $55 AUD might be a bit steep for a game this slow and linear, but if you love noir as much as I do – or you’ve been to the library recently to check out the graphic novels, you might want to give this game a shot.

Its a good game. I bought it for the story line and because I'm a fan of The Wolf Among Us. I enjoy that game and while they work on releasing the sequel to that I'm enjoying this game. 30 mins into the game I've discovered this..

Pros:
Choice Base System
Character Development / Design (If they were humans it may not nearly be as fun just my thoughts)
Compelling story

Con;
Clunky controls
Slow Paced
Buggy (I've had to close the game and restart because I've gotten frozen and unable to move)
Tutorial System Needs Work - Cutting out of the action

Do I recommend it. Yes. I do however, they need some patch work for all the issues wit the controls. I'll keep playing and I hope things get better along the way.

I do enjoy this game. I have put in a lot of time despite one run-through being about 11 hours. However I am disappointed this game was released unpolished, and essentially unfinished. With the current patch there is no way to get all of the achievements that I am aware of. Once the missing pieces are in place, I'll gladly give the thumbs up.

Blacksad: Under the Skin

Full of 1950s empathy, Blacksad has a great story, engaging characters, realistic voice acting and a moderate challenge.

First Impressions

????
Blacksad: Under the Skin is a detective game featuring John Blacksad, a cynical war veteran turned private eye. The idea for the game originated from the comic book series Blacksad which like the game is set in 1950’s America.

Jonn Blacksad is a hard drinking, chain smoking feline. Underprivileged and nearly a criminal himself, his service in the army taught him how to defend himself and become a marksman. Wearing a suit and trenchcoat throughout the game he has that typical detective look and vibe.

The characters are very strong in this game. The entire cast are animals portraying human traits and generally their species mimics their stereotypical personalities. For example, nearly all the policemen are canines, whilst villains are often reptiles or amphibians or strong animals like rhinos and horses. This visual reinforcement of our own stereotypes works wonderfully at making villains seem powerful and dangerous. Women are usually cats or dogs and have a gentle, human like quality to them.

Blacksad is aided in his investigation by Smirnov, a seasoned Alsatian police veteran and Weekly, a keen weasel reporter with an aversion to cleaning.

There are not too many cast members for us to get to know them all well. They all have their distinct personalities and we soon make judgments on them and connect with them emotionally.

The story is full of twists and turns and was satisfying to unfold. I liked the manner in which the game asks you to approach the investigation. In your repertoire you have the power of cat senses where you can see, hear or smell clues, reminding us that in fact Blacksad is actually an animal. He can make deductions from clues uncovered from crime scenes and try to match these up to provide new lines of enquiry or uncover new suspects.

Within every good detective’s arsenal is the power to remember details and ask the pertinent questions. Blacksad has a notebook which contains all important discoveries. He also has to remember promises he made to characters throughout the game. Decisions can have consequences later.

When questioning a suspect, you have a choice of questions to ask or a choice of answers to give. Quite often these options are timed and you don’t have too much time to decide. The time allowed is often brutal and will result in mistakes being made. This can prove quite frustrating. There is a load option if you want to go back and try again however.

On a few occasions, there will be action sequences which are quick time events and you will have to react quickly to prompts by pressing certain buttons or directions on your gamepad. If you get these wrong it usually results in your death. If you die during a QTE you just repeat the sequence until you get it right.

Blacksad moves around the screen quite awkwardly and often you’ll bump into objects and get caught on items. His turning arc seems to be quite wide and he is difficult to control accurately. This doesn’t have too much of an impact on the game. It does affect picking up collectibles however. There are roughly 100 sporting cards to collect and sometimes it is difficult to position Blacksad to pick these up. If you are an achievement hunter these are very difficult to find and there is no chapter select afterwards, so you’ll have to play the game several times. In fact, there are a number of very difficult achievements including six alternative endings.

The game looks great and sounds great, including some excellent voice overs which are full of character and emotion.

It offers a moderate amount of difficulty. As usual these games just require you to search every nook and cranny and talk to everyone you can. Often talking to someone will open up new lines of enquiry. Blacksad can even phone people off scene if there is a telephone available. There are a few minor puzzles you will need to solve but nothing too taxing.

If you like point and click adventures with a detective styled theme then this is certainly a strong contender. You don’t need to be fans of the comics or even know anything about them. I would say it is a little overpriced at 15 hours for one playthrough but there is certainly scope for more if you want to find the six alternative endings and collect the sport cards.

Story

????
An official, and all new story for Blacksad, the game tells the story of Joe Dunn, a boxing club owner who is found dead in his gym. His daughter, Sonia Dunn, hires Blacksad to investigate. Was it a suicide like the police have presumed or something more sinister?

Gameplay

????️
You move Blacksad around the screen and are able to interact with objects that highlight. Investigating objects will reveal Hotspots which you navigate through and choose, instigating a narrative response, and if important will result in taking a note of the object. It may also get added to your deductions board where you can link other findings together to reveal more clues.

Throughout the game you will need to talk to characters and make decisions. Some of them will have minor consequences and some will have a knock-on effect later in the story. Some of these decisions are timed and some are not. When a decision you make has a major influence on events, a notification pops up. Interrogations often result in cut scenes or flashbacks of past events. You can also question people via the telephone if there is one present or call Weekly or Smirnov for backup.

Keeping good relationships with Weekly and Smirnov is quite important. You have to decide whether you want to be a maverick and not inform the police about your progress or let Smirnov know about clues you have uncovered. Both characters can help you in a tricky situation so it’s often beneficial to give them what they want from time to time.

Occasionally, Blacksad will have the opportunity to use his cat senses (sight, hearing and smell) to uncover clues.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1991334467

This involves searching a scene by zooming in and moving the cursor until something highlights.

During action sequences Blacksad must react quickly by pressing the correct button or direction on the game pad. If you are too slow you will die and have to repeat the sequence. Other action parts involve finding clues within a certain amount of time or escaping from tight situations.

Sound

????
A wonderful jazz themed soundtrack plays throughout the game adding suspense and drama when required. Cut scenes are full of jazz giving that 1950’s detective film vibe. Voice acting is superb and very well acted with feeling and emotion.

Graphics

????
The graphics are quite impressive. Some characters look better than others but testament to the game is that you soon forget they are actually animals because they behave so much like humans.

Performance

????
My game crashed 16 times during my 15 hours of gameplay. The PC would just reset and restart during the game. I reported this but was told it was my PC and not the game!

Conclusion

????
I enjoyed Blacksad: Under the Skin. It was full of 1950’s nostalgia with a good story and wonderful characters to enjoy. Voice acting was superb and it provided a moderate but entertaining challenge.

This is the first game ever that I want to keep playing over and over again. Characters in this game have something that not every game has, personality. Every one of them has it's own, unique voice, thinking, talking and etc. However, it is a pretty laggy game with a lot of bugs in it, sometimes I just wanted to quit, because Blacksad would just stand still and wont move till I restart the game. Sometimes the voices will turn off for some reason, and if you don't have subtitles, you are screwed. No matter how buggy this game is, I still enjoyed it. Overall view on New-York of 60's and anthropomorphic gameplay is what made that game itself. Thanks to Juan Diaz for making this world a little bit happier by creating such a universe with it's own unique characters and world. 99 cat lives

Perfectly captures the tone of the graphic novel series it is based on.
This feels like everything the old Telltale games adventures tried (and often succeeded) in delivering. Story choice, amazing characters, and feeling as if you are actually solving a mystery, as opposed to following a story on rails. I want SO much more of this.

I wouldn't get this for anything more than $15-20. It's about 9 hours of just ok. I had higher hopes for Blacksad than were delivered. Also the 4 endings available pretty much only vary based on the last couple decisions you make.
