it has the vibe of mortal shell or ds1 very dark and mysterious, but it also has a sense of being other worldly with the character designs which are very solid, a bit clunky like ds1 or demon souls but it is overall very well executed and i feel pretty underrated.

first of all, the game changed a lot from the devlogs and trailers, and a lot of content was cut, which is a shame, but still, is impressive how only 3 people managed to actually finish this game, it is kinda clunky and can feel weird at times, but I honestly don't mind as I know this is an indie game, and as far as I know, there seems to still be work being done on the game. I find it sad that it couldn't be what it was meant to be, but I REALLY hope there can be some sort of update or reimagination of this game that can bring the cut content back, but I'm still glad I was able to experience this game, it has such an unique artstyle and a great atmosphere, it's waaay too ambiguous but I personally like that, and with the world of the game, I find it fitting, I like how you can really get lost, makes exploration way too interesting in my opinion, and for the world...I'm 100% impressed on how MASSIVE it is, it's a shame the climbing mechanic was scrapped as it would've benefited the game immensely, but even with that, it was such a joy exploring the omnistructure, once again, I find it sad seeing the cut content and how much more the game could've made, but I can see the passion of the developers, and I REALLY hope they now are able to make bleak faith the game it was meant to be, whether is a sequel, big update or reimagination. Even with all it's downsides, this was such an amazing and interesting experience, one of my favorite games and I'd 100% recommend it.

Its highly underdeveloped game...ALL the comments talks about the atmosphere and the music. Nearly all the souls-like can do that. But the gameplay has many ideas which are good but the execution of the game lacks nearly in aspect. I can understand that the devs had a dream but they didn't have the coding skills to make it right. From me its a Hard pass

9/10

Bleak dystopian future with Brutalist Concrete 80s architecture.
looks awesome, setting is awesome. hard to follow story.

nit pick would be some clunky combat here and there and getting stuck on geometry while fighting.

I adore this game. It perfectly replicates the Dark Souls 1 experience, and the devs still continue to push out updates for this game. There are plenty of criticisms, sure, but I have watched issue after issue be reworked and improved until it is resolved. It does such a great job at creating an interesting, beautiful, unique, mysterious, and incredible world.

And before you ask, yes, there is a mechanic that will delete your character, but you pretty much have to be explicitly trying to do it in order for it to actually happen. Specifically, there's maybe five enemies in the game that will incredibly slowly build up character deletion. It is such a near statistical impossibility that I got the achievement tied to having the deletion meter (entropy) below 1% on my first playthrough, and I explored literally every area, nook, and cranny I saw.

TL:DR This game is not for everyone. It can be challenging and difficult to navigate, especially at the start. However, I truly love this game, and it is a phenomenal experience that I recommend at least trying.

I'm in love with this game. It's like being inside a fever dream inspired by BLAME. The atmosphere is second to none, elevated by a fantastic mournful musical score (whoever wrote the music: bravo.) The combat is good, but is almost secondary to the dreamlike trance of traversing these megastructures. The level design is excellent and the art direction, stunning. This game was unplayable for me at release, mainly due to issues with the camera and mouse acceleration. It's come a long way. Extraordinary and unique.

It’s rare in today’s internet-driven age to stumble across a hidden gem, but that’s exactly what Bleak Faith : Forsaken is, an absolutely fantastic game that, while definitely not for everyone, is probably the closest any none Fromsoft developer has gotten to recreating the slow-paced combat and oppressive atmosphere of the very first Dark Souls game.

The world is like nothing I have ever seen before, a massive interconnected environment known as the Omnistructure that dwarfs every single souls game that came before it. I cannot stress enough how mind-bogglingly huge this place is, with towers stretching miles into the sky and craters burrowing deep into the earth. It can take hours just to traverse a single environment, unlocking shortcuts and branching pathways along the way. In fact, several times when I entered a level and found myself looking out over a flooded city or a series of cloud-shrouded walkways, I had to put the controller down and just drink it all in, wondering if I would ever get to visit the things I could just make out on the distant horizon. And, of course, I would.

The game’s immense size confers a real sense of isolation. You will be constantly horribly, horribly lost, wandering through dilapidated remains of modern and fantastical structures that, similarly to Bloodborne, reward both lateral and vertical exploration, all while the game’s simple yet sorrowful music whispers in your ears.

Admittedly, I was a bit worried when I first started playing Bleak Faith that losing my way or travelling to high-level areas by mistake would be a source of frustration, but luckily developers Archangel Studios have implemented several systems to counteract this. The first are a plethora of red glowing lights that, if you chose to follow them, will always show you the right way to go. The second is that you lose nothing upon death, which means you can go off in one direction, die, then set off in another direction entirely. The third is that you consume no stamina while sprinting out of combat, allowing you to traverse large areas with ease.

And the fourth, perhaps most important thing, is a mobile checkpoint that you can place pretty much anywhere, even just outside boss areas. It will save your progress too, so you can drop the checkpoint and quit out of the game without losing anything. This little flickering homunculus is a god-send, and really pushed me to explore deeply without worrying about not being able to find my way back.

Combat is quite simply fantastic, though you will be torn to shreds if you refuse to engage in its many systems. This is where Bleak Faith falters, as its incredibly barebones tutorial does nothing to explain the various intricacies of levelling, upgrading, perks, and world tendency.

Stat levelling, present in most souls games, is important here too, though I would argue it becomes less and less so as the game progresses. Strength governs melee damage and equipment load, Agility attack speed, crit chance, and bow damage, constitution health and stagger resistance, and intelligence increases magic.

As a two-handed weapon afficionado I specced mainly into strength and constitution, but started leaning more heavily into dexterity later on when I began to realise just how powerful critical hits can be. I was initially a bit disappointed to find out the game caps your level at 25, which is low compared to other games, but I soon realised that your actual level become less and less important as you reach the endgame.

The second mechanic that is poorly explained but incredibly important is your handler, who is responsible for upgrading your equipment. Unfortunately, every upgrade level must be unlocked with a finite item known as an Echo that are found hidden away in the game’s many sprawling environments. When you find one, others in adjacent zones disappear, making sure you are never overpowered. Nevertheless, it is essential to prioritise these as soon as possible as each upgrade to your gear also unlocks a crystal slot.
Much like the gems in Diablo, these slots allow you to add game-changing attributes to your character that make Bleak Faith’s challenging combat far more manageable. Each piece of armour and weapon can hold a maximum of five crystals, for a whopping thirty crystals total, allowing you to regenerate health, increase your stats, or buff your defences. I ended boosting my stamina regen to allow me to swing my massive sword more frequently, along with a good amount of health leech to offset my slower playstyle, especially as you only start the game with a measly two potion slots.

Perks and abilities are another interesting feature. You have access to two abilities from the start, anything from a ground pound to a super dodge. Perks, on the other hand, are gained from every boss you defeat. You can have up to four total, each upgradeable, adding some great bonuses like stunning your opponent with every heavy attack, or gaining more defence if every piece of armour you wear is from the same armour class.

Then, finally, there’s the crafting and potion system that is far more critical here than in any of the traditional Fromsoft games. This is because of penetration, a mechanic that comes into play from mid-to-late game and changes everything. Bosses and enemies start to have penetration percentages which simply mitigate a portion of your attacks. Doesn’t matter if you have strength 1 or strength 100, If you can’t get through their armour, you’ll be doing chip damage. This is where crafting comes in, as you are rapidly able to craft potions that boost your own weapon penetration considerably. You just need to remember to add them to your belt and use them at the right moment.

So yeah, that’s a lot of systems, and while I personally loved spending hours agonising on which crystal to slot into my weapon or what perk upgrade to pick, I can understand that some players might find it daunting, especially when combined with Bleak Faith’s take on world tendency. You see, much like in Demon Souls, the world changes with certain actions you take. Every area is open and explorable from the get go, but every time you defeat a boss, the other bosses get harder. Defeat enough of them and pass certain story beats I won’t spoil here and the world changes, repopulating with new enemies and items. If you’ve already fully explored those areas, that’s fine, but if you made a bee line for the boss each time and want to go back later on, you’ll find everything significantly tougher.

You might be wondering why I haven’t talked much about the plot, and to be honest, it’s because even after finishing both the normal and secret ending, I still don’t understand all of it. Dark Souls was intentionally opaque, though item descriptions allowed players to slowly piece things together in a natural way. There are no such descriptions here, only a score of documents to find that reveal very little about the world beyond the fact that you have been sent to the Omnistructure by an organisation known as the Administration to recalibrate a complex mechanical device called the Anomaly. Various other factions are also present, including the God-worshipping Inquisitors and an enigmatic skull-faced knight called Plague who looks like he was ripped straight out of Berserk.

I don’t think Bleak Faith should be played for its story. I do however, wholeheartedly recommend that anyone interested in gigantic, interlocking environments; complex, methodical combat, and an oppressive melancholic atmosphere should give this one a try. It had a bit of a rocky start when it first released in 2023, but over the last three years, the three-man dev team have made hundreds of improvements, turning an average experience into an amazing souls game that is absolutely worth your time.

I’ll be upfront: Bleak Faith: Forsaken is janky. Combat can feel inconsistent, animations are rough, and balance isn’t always there. But despite all of that, I kept playing—and that says a lot.

The world and atmosphere are doing serious heavy lifting. Exploring its massive, eerie environments feels lonely and memorable in a way most Soulslikes don’t even try to achieve. The scale, art direction, and sound design show a clear vision, and it’s impressive knowing this was made by a very small team.

This isn’t a polished AAA experience, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The issues here feel more like limitations than laziness, and the ambition behind the game shines through constantly.

If you need perfect combat and smooth animations, skip it. But if you’re willing to tolerate jank in exchange for atmosphere, originality, and indie passion, Bleak Faith: Forsaken is worth your time.

This is such an ambitious and refreshing title !

I have so much to say and talk about this game but i will try not to bother with a very long review here. I will instead try to get in contact with the devs however possible and support them in their endeavor. If you happen to love the soulslike genre in general, i'd implore you to do so too after trying the game out.

Bleak Faith, uppon 70 hours of playtime and counting can very easily be put among my favourites in the action-adventure field, mostly due to it's amazingly bizarre and unique atmosphere. Vast open worlds, and long reaching pathways lead to an unforgiving urban blend of a modern post-apocalypse and medieval fantasies from different long gone eras. Exploring you will end up finding notes, stories and remnants from ancient cultures and expeditions that came here regarding the state of the world, among a plethora of menacing and extravagant creatures inhabiting it! Patience and mindful navigation will reward the stubborn and offer them an experience of a marvellous first playthrough, since the art direction of this game I would consider to be better and better the more it unfolds.

The platforming is extremely cathartic yet risky, providing you with a jump and dash mechanic to go anywhere you please... leading to some intriguing yet sometimes very frustrating out of bounds adventures. The combat system offers a great variety of tools and possibilities for melee and ranged playstyles with unexpected efficiency and attention to detail in some of it's parts.

Sadly though due to the sheer magnitude of it's scope, there are borderline unfinished items left here and there.. like junky animations, poor sound balance ect. Honestly though i believe that a vast majority of it's problems are easily fixable with some gameplay parameters being changed, extra rigs and animations here and there, even some new paths and enemy placements...

I just want more of this game honestly, and the foundation is here... made by three people.
This is art at it's peak and i couldn't be more happy with what is being given to us here.
