Awesome Mech Game, But a Shallow Story
Daemon X Machina is a great mech customization combat game with great controls and a lot of options when it comes to mech optimization. To start this game has an awesome character customization system and the art style is absolutely awesome. The game also has a very heavy focus on collecting weapons and mech parts from scrapped enemies to then research more advanced weapons and parts rather than just buying parts from a store. When it comes to maneuvering in this game it functions great and is highly responsive, but it is slightly restricted in the vertical aspect because the skybox seems a bit low. Weapon combat is fun but it's a little bland because almost every weapon shares one sound effect. Sword combat can be really cool especially with the sword clash feature but again there is only one swing animation so it falls a bit flat. Customization on the other hand defiantly does not fall flat. This game has a huge array of different parts for each section of the mech offering stats that allow you to choose your play style. Now there is a body mod system where you can purchase mechanical augmentations that will give you certain buffs inside of and outside of your mech. These augmentations can alter the physical appearance of your Outer though, and different parts are bound to certain augmentations. So if you choose augmentations based off of what you want rather than off of what goes together, your Outer will look absolutely ridiculous. You can reset your Outer to their organic body but that does not refund you on the parts you bought so do that only if you cannot stand how you look what so ever. The story in this game is one of those stories where it can be interesting and entertaining but it would be much better if it were an anime and not a game. A lot of exposition happens in the background without your knowledge and it's explained to you but you really only get half of it. It just feels slightly rushed with a lot of subplots being forgotten and not picked up again or resolved behind the scenes. The characters are fun and all have individual identities but again a missed opportunity because they just aren't fully fleshed out to the potential these characters have. It's kinda like the trope of you don't watch the giant robot movie for the story. You watch it for the giant robots fighting. But it is saddening since the story actually seemed really interesting. There is a multiplayer mode but it is limited. There are multiplayer boss fights and multiplayer exploration missions where you and 3 others explore a large underground facility to destroy the enemy arsenals at the end and collect their parts. There are even mech parts that are limited to the multiplayer mode so it is definitely worth checking out. I love this game despite it's flaws so if you are looking at it I would recommend it. There are lots of hours of fun to be had in this game.

Zitat:
The childhood nostalgia kicks in a simple well-polished game.
If you are a fans of the armored core series in the past, then this is that appetizer before the real dine comes in.
I'd expect the devs is testing the water here (and the engine), if the situation supports it, the coming of a sequel is near.
Even if it's just coming as a test (just like the first mass effect game), all the features available is already worth the price.
the noticeable excluded features from the armored core series (downsides) that I noticed are:
- Legpart are limited to humanoid legs, there are no spider leg-part, no tank-leg, no hover-leg.
- You cannot change the energy color of your Arsenal (or ACs as in armored core)
- There is only ONE savegame, the inability to change nickname makes this worse.
- Make the exploration tileset to be more diverse.
- Make the storyline more interesting, impactful and heavy, with totally unpredictable plot twists.
- Restore the missing features from the original AC series.
- Go Open-world?

Beautiful Game With Sloppy Mechanics And A Lacklustre Story
This game will at first seem amazing with beautiful graphics, an involving story, and what seems to be countless customisation possibilities for your 'Arsenal'. However, the overly complex and difficult to use customisation scheme, short story, and constantly revolving cast of characters will provide only a shallow experience. The story is fairly hamfisted and you will see the arc in the first hour. As a newly minted mercenary with a fresh mech, you are taking on jobs to fight back a tide of mechanical enemies. You don't have dialogue to choose, choices to make, or even a voice as you watch the story unfold. There are countless side characters that are supposed to be unique but get lost in the flood of faces. The cut screens are great but really serve just as a segue to the next cookie cutter mission. If you want a game with a rich story and world, this is should not be your first choice. The customisation is endlessly frustrating. You only really acquire items through looting the battlefield. These items can be sold but they also serve as the foundation for your weapon upgrades. The only way, beyond looting, to get new items and parts for your mech is to upgrade existing parts. This leads to you simply hording and hoping you get what you need. You can buy items, but it is limited to a VERY SMALL selection that you probably have. For a game that is about customisation, this part really falls flat on it face. This is not battlemech. Don't expect a deep level of interaction beyond attaching this arm or researching that weapon. If there is a part of this game that disappoints me the most -- this is it. Combat is okay. You can have machine guns, shoulder launched missiles, bazookas, lazers, and even swing swords made of lazers. It's pretty cool but there really is not much else to it. Shooting your standard enemy is simply holding a button and flying within range. Melee is simply spamming attack. The Bosses require a little thought but it is not much more than target this or that weak point. It's challenging enough but the lack of variety to missions become stale. The gameplay loop is short cutscreen, combat, and then maybe another cutscreen to give little more story. I'm not crazy picky but they try to add 'ahhh' moments and you already expected them. Overall, this game is very pretty but everything else is stale or very basic. Story is pretty short, customisation is a mess in comparison to other games, and the combat is just flying in circles spamming attacks. For the current price (this includes half price sales), it is not worth it. If it comes on sale, maybe if you don't come in with too high expectations and really want a mech game.

STORY
This was a chore to sit through as I was equal parts bored and confused. The overall plot is middle-of-the-road but the way it is told is atrocious. The game's backstory is that part of a moon crashed into a planet’s surface, causing a natural disaster that released a lethal radiation across the planet that caused A.I. to become sentient and attack humanity. Some people have become immune to the radiation- known as femto- and can actually absorb it to become stronger. You are one such person and have become a mercenary operating within the contamination zone, known as the Oval Zone, for nebulous reasons. The actual plot of the game then proceeds to follow your misadventures. You will meet a very vast yet shallow cast of other mercenaries. Everyone can literally be described in a few words as they are not very well written. These people serve as both your teammates and opposition on missions. As mercenaries. the person screaming at you for beating them can be your teammate in the next mission. This makes things feel very weird as your relationships with people seem to be constantly rewritten, making it even harder to connect with them. Likewise, they all have rather bland or melodramatic speeches in mission briefings or in the field that take a while to get to the point. No one really “grows” as a person in the story and even those who did had a very predicable and shallow arc. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2345296569 Similarly, some characters solely exist to spout cryptic exposition at you and hint at a bigger, more sinister scheme later down the line. Once the story gets to a plot twist, it proceeds to exposition dump while still not answering the important questions. For example, one faction is functionally immortal due to some sort of super-advanced tech. They all fight to protect their immortality and spout cryptic lines but none of it has any meaning due to the poor pacing of the story. Why are they immortal? What’s the backstory? All we are told is that the towers we were sent to destroy is the key to it all. The game then proceeds to usher us into the next mission and drops the sub-plot entirely. It honestly feels like the game lacked the proper budget to tell the epic story it seems to want to tell.GAMEPLAY
Gameplay is quite smooth and beginner-friendly. You have your mech, called an Arsenal, and can customize practically all of it. You choose your body parts, its 2 primary weapons, 2 optional weapons, a shoulder weapon and an auxiliary device for support. The overall parts selection is okay. This game takes 3-dimensional combat very seriously so learning basic movements is tantamount for victory. I do wish that maintaining a consistent altitude were easier and tracking enemy elevation on radar were smoother. Boosting takes stamina; depleting your gauge causes you to stop all movement and drop to the floor. You cannot do any advanced movements until it FULLY replenishes. You can also harness femto to create a body double or use 1 of 3 buffs for your Arsenal. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2348459588 Actual gameplay consists of piloting your Arsenal and destroying the corrupted A.I.’s in your missions. They honestly don’t pose much of a threat and are only dangerous in swarms. There are mini-boss mechs called Strai that are a very minor challenge as they can use Arsenal weaponry. Defeating a Strai or an enemy Arsenal allows you to scavenge ONE part from its wreckage. You can equip weapons you take to your reserve pylons for immediate use; Arsenal parts are sent to your hanger back at base. Parts also randomly spawn in 1 of 3 varieties AND with 0-3 modification slots. Thus, there is a lot of variability in drops which makes scavenging fun, albeit VERY RNG heavy. Enemy Arsenals are regular occurrences and provide most of the challenge in missions. You will often have to fight a full team of 3 in a mission with your 2 AI partners. Arsenal fights are fun, but the AI for both allies and enemies really needs work. Sometimes they refused to move, got stuck, or just couldn’t hit their target. Story missions aren’t terribly difficult once you get some decent gear. One annoyance I had was that some fights were unwinnable; you could whittle an enemy down to a certain percentage then they became invincible so the dialogue could play out. However, there is no indication they have become invisible and they will continue to fight you, making it seem as if the fight is continuing. In Post-game, you can:- Clean up the Free Missions which are your bog-standard optional missions.
- Get better equipment from exploration and co-op missions (both can be done solo or online with 3 other players). Explorations are semi-randomized dungeon runs that task you with exploring, collecting gear, and beating a Strai (or more) at the end. These get rather boring with the repetitive assets and loop.
- Do Co-op missions. They are akin to MMO raid bosses; you will have to fight some very difficult enemies in order to receive randomized modifications, gear blueprints and more.
- Not play Online, which is dead for casual play. Joining the dedicated Discord is necessary for matches.
VISUALS
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2348489340 The game uses a cel-shaded art style that is rather pretty. Nonetheless, some textures look rather bland or blurry. Likewise, some lighting can look pretty weird, especially on faces. Nonetheless, I definitely feel that the art style helps set the game apart from other mecha titles and serves the game well. Animations were overall good, although everyone has exaggerated body movements when in their Arsenals. I absolutely love all the battle damage on the Arsenals whenever you get a close-up shot on them,AUDIO
Overall, the soundtrack was nice. Music felt appropriate and there is a nice variety of genres used here, ranging from moody orchestral tracks to sick guitar riffs for faction themes. Voice acting was mostly well-executed in the English dub and made the characters more bearable. However, everyone also dramatically pauses after a text box/line which makes things rather stilted. The sound effects were typically good, but gunshots feel really flaccid. The default mixing is terrible- sound effects drown out dialogue during missions.PERFORMANCE
The game ran well for me. Mysteriously, you can only access the full options menu from in-game. Controls can be fully rebound and your HUD is fully customizable. However, there is no “return to default” option if you mess up. There is an okay amount of graphical settings for PC although you’ll have to deal with a preset slider for overall quality and changes.OVERALL
While I truly enjoyed my time with the game, the lack of a coherent story and grindy endgame made it hard for me to keep playing. Nonetheless, the actual gameplay is quite fun and can be picked up easily by a beginner to the mecha genre. Alternating between fighting chaff A.I. units and challenging Arsenal squads is a blast. Graphics overall look excellent due to cel-shading and the soundtrack makes certain moments pop even more. All in all, if you like the mecha genre, this game is worth a look. Just be sure to temper your expectations going in.7/10 WORTH A LOOK- Get on Sale if Possible

- OverviewDxM is a fast-paced mecha-simulator, with a decent level of progression and customization, anime-ish visual design and a rather bizarre story. It’s mostly single-player oriented, but it has some multiplayer modes, as well. Two biggest problems that this game has, that are worth mentioning right away, are a)it was originally designed for Switch, which makes the combat and overall balance feel rather weird and laughably easy at times when played on PC b) the post launch support is pretty much non-existent.
- Story I will be honest with you - even after beating the game I hardly understand what the hell is going on in the game’s universe. As in, it is super confusing and obscure, with “sudden” plot twists frequently coming at you with no rhyme or reason, in an overly epic anime-ish fashion. All I can say without giving you heavy spoilers is that the story is set on another planet (you’ll learn which one after beating the campaign). Being under a constant threat of a planetary-wide cataclysm due to a mysterious energy called [strike]McGuffin[/strike] Femto, several huge corporations have to simultaneously cooperate and compete for control over the situation and planet resources. What makes this whole thing even worse are numerous AI’s named Immortals that are taking control over different combat drones, making the planet’s surface filled with hostiles. So the only ones who are ready to stand up to them are several groups of mercenaries that operate local combat mechs - the Arsenals. Naturally, you get to play as a seemingly ordinary Rookie among those pilots, building up a reputation for yourself and getting your hands on superior Arsenal’s gear and weaponry. And as it usually goes, nothing is as simple as it seems at first glance.
- Gameplay I’m happy to say that this is where DxM shines. It’s not perfect by any means, but it is incredibly satisfying. You spend most of your time piloting your Arsenal, although you can also leave it and control your Operator directly. The latter is mostly just a nice-to-have feature since you are incredibly limited in what you can do with your boots on the ground. Fighting in an Arsenal, on the other hand, feels incredibly satisfying - it’s fast paced combat that can happen both in mid-air and on foot; with you engaging into fighter-like dogfights or duels in melee. The regular missions mostly consist of you shooting either rogue AIs or hostile Arsenal pilots, with some minor additional assignments, like defending/searching/escorting/hacking something of value. The boss fights are, naturally, just arenas set for you and some giant robot that you get to fight. There are two major elements of progression - acquiring new gear for your Arsenal and obtaining new implants for your Operator, which serve as this game’s equivalent of skill-tree. During both single-player and coop-multiplayer missions you can obtain loot that are either weapons or parts for your Arsenal. The latter consists of 5 parts - head, torso, right arm, left arm and legs. Each of them not only affect your Arsenal visually, but also have their own stats, allowing you to both go for some specific set of mixing and matching the parts all you want. The number of different parts and weapons is pleasantly huge, which gives you quite a nice level of customization. You can focus on maneuverability or armor, ranged combat or melee, full-auto or semi-auto weapons and etc. And speaking of weapons, while there is a decent variety, one thing that I cannot overlook is that the balancing could definitely use some work. Another drawback that I have to mention is the grind. Loot drop is incredibly random, and what makes things worse is that each piece of gear/weaponry can have up to 3 slots for mods, with the latter also having 5 levels of rarity, so getting the best gear can require you putting hundreds of hours into the game. Finally, the last sad part about DxM is the lack of any decent endgame. The PvP mode is basically just one mode - duels, which is ruined by the lack of any proper anti-cheat protection. As for single-player/coop experience - you only get to replay the boss fights or “exploration missions,” which are simplistic, procedurally-generated dungeon runs that you can play solo or with your friends. And these are what you’ll have to play once you’re done with the campaign, because that will be the only valid way of getting decent gear in the end.
- Graphics DxM features a pretty stylized, anime-like visual design. The textures and visual effects make you feel like you’re in some sort of comic book. Surprisingly enough, it does the trick just right. The Arsenal models look pretty cool; the landscape and backgrounds are pretty decent; the models of your opponents (bosses, in particular) also look nice; you’re greeted with a decent character editor when you start a new game, and overall, I would say that this visual style only helped the game out. It would’ve definitely been great to see it in a more serious, photo-realistic style, but given the fact that this game was originally designed for Switch, I’m not surprised with this choice. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s pretty well-optimized. One feature that left me rather disappointed (but I suppose it’s more of a personal preference) is that as you progress through the campaign, the numerous implants that you give your character make them look incredibly generic and cover their face entirely. In other words, there isn’t much point in bothering to customize your character in the very beginning, for they will stop looking the way you want them to, anyway.
- Sound Well, with the visual design being heavily inspired by animes, it’s only expected that the sound design matches it. The sound effects are okay; there’s really nothing I can say more about them. The soundtrack is solid and fitting, but quite limited - by the second part of the campaign you’ll most likely get a bit tired of hearing the same tracks over and over. The English voice acting is pretty decent, as well - the actors managed to give their characters enough personality for you to actually care what happens to them. The only problem is our mute protagonist, but… Let’s just say that as you progress through the game, you’ll learn certain truths about your character that will make you lose any connection that you had to them and understand why the devs didn’t even bother to give them any personality.
Conclusion
8/10. DxM has an amazing potential. It’s sad that the devs decided to leave this game in the state that it is now. While it’s universe is pretty bizarre, it’s gameplay formula, visual and sound design are very solid. Naturally, the chances of it getting any significant updates are minor, but I genuinely hope that the devs will give their best effort if they ever decide to make a sequel. Release on all platforms from the get-go, more coop-potential, more weapon, gear and character customization variety, better balancing, superior PvP - implement all of that, and DxM2 will be on it’s way to becoming the best mecha-simulator game there is.

Rookie, you are coming with us, aren’t you?
At some point the Earth suffered a cataclysm that wiped out most of the planet’s lifeforms and reshaped the land while at the same time a new resource appeared, Femto but also a new enemy, the Immortals. New blocks emerged as Horizon, Zen and Sky Union, consortiums that manage and exploit the resources of their territories, meanwhile Orbital defends these territories from Immortals using mercenaries. Everything seems normal but things will soon start becoming weirder and tenser between the consortiums, the mercenaries and Orbital, what seemed to be a battle for humanity against an unstoppable enemy will soon become something deeper and much complicated, the war isn’t over yet. Story is entertaining but nothing really original, it works perfectly and that’s more than enough, however, some things are too “anime” and that might make some people doubt if this game is for them, I’m going to be completely honest, I didn’t like some parts and elements from it, however, the final result was satisfactory and that was ok for me, a geopolitical conflict, a conspiracy and a bunch of side-stories that weren't bad at all. In general the story and the characters work fine and while this isn’t the main attraction from the game it is always nice to have at least a decent story. Something that could have been better? The relationship between our character and the rest of mercenaries. Our character is completely flat and there is no real evolution, in fact, the game will make those relationships develop for the sake of the story but it feels completely artificial and non-satisfactory at all. You can partner them in missions and they will always talk to you as a friend or a trustworthy person, however, I don’t feel this has been explored enough to feel good or natural, too bad because it could have been a great part of the game thanks to the number of clans and characters that are present in the game generating alliances or conflicts. Let’s now talk to the main reason you might love this game, the gameplay. When people say Daemon x Machina is the closest thing to Armored Core they totally mean it, not only a big part of the stuff of this game was involved in the past on Armored but they also nailed the feeling of movement, speed and combat. Arsenals are fast, really fast, the sooner you understand and get used to this, the better because it will be essential for the best fights, everything will become a rain of missiles, bullets and light trails, once you upgrade your character things like the “blink” will make battles even more dynamic, no matter what kind of enemy are you facing (Arsenal, Colossal immortal or normal enemies) you will have a great battle. Arsenals are also very customizable not only in terms of equipment (which again, I recommend to get used to this system if you want to survive some missions) but also in terms of decals, patterns and colors, you can do really cool things if you know how to. Weapons and Armor can also be upgraded individually with perks and modifiers, while I haven’t used this that much it really helps to balance things and if there’s a piece that is perfect for your necessities and it has available slots for upgrades, then do it because it will make your gear even better. Visually the game is very pleasant, it uses cell-shading so it won’t look as dated as a more realistic game as this is more cartoony, with this PC port the AA helps a lot making things smoother even at higher resolutions and while options are limited it’s more than enough for me in this case. In terms of variety it’s well served, I thought the game would be limited in terms of areas but to my surprise it’s actually varied and with a good bunch of biomes, of course there is a limited number of zones but I think you will be pleased with the number of options, from desserts to dense forests. PC port has been handled by Xseed and they did an amazing job, the game runs perfectly and it’s not very demanding, I’m very happy with this port to be honest. And I think that’s it, in conclusion, I liked this game a lot, it’s fast, it’s fun, it is a very great mech game and it’s the closest thing we have to Armored Core on PC and in general so, if you don’t mind certain things then this game might be your cup of tea. I totally encourage you to buy it, hope you all enjoy it. Recommended.
