Dynamischer Begleiter

Hobo with dwarf like beard looking for his dog, a rat that helps you out and nazis to kill. Accompanied by great music, nice level design, satisfying gameplay / combat, some dark humor and it costs nothing! So what is not to like? If you like FPS, play this. Recommended!

This is proof that anyone will complain when given the chance.

Is the game perfect? No.

Is it absolutely a serviceable title? Yes.

Is it fun? Yes.

Is it free? YES!

Don't pick up a free gift like this just to defecate on it. There is far worse on the store page you have to pay real money for.

Darkenstein 3D is a free, retro-inspired, first-person shooter love letter to the classic '90s shooters.

The enemies are varied and challenging, the levels are expansive with many secrets, and the weapon selection is satisfying. The chunky sprites work perfectly for the game's tone. The sound effects are equally atmospheric, framed with the metal riff soundtrack. There's lots of achievements, levels to explore, and big bosses to take down.

Gameplay-wise, a few bugs forced me to restart certain levels. It was also frustrating having to restart from the start of the level after losing all my lives (tip: quit the game on your last life and when restarting the game, you'll have 3 lives from your last checkpoint).

The game ran well on the Steam Deck, but it took me a few attempts to get into the game due to some early release bugs. However, by the time I reached level 4 I was committed.

For free, you really can't go wrong with Darkenstein 3D. It's fast, fun, gory, chaotic, and captured the spirit of old-school shooters while still feeling fresh. So if you're a fan of retro FPS games and gothic horror, you'll find a lot to enjoy here!

This game clearly isnt bad let alone because it is free. But there are certainly aspects that just scream little experience or budget in making this game.

The graphics are all over the place and honestly look a bit cheap in combination with the look and lighting. The later point is the real problem though since the levels are either way too bright or too dark and theres nothing in between. The decision to make the flashlight only available with the handgun is also one I have no words for especially considering the lighting problems... I also found the German propaganda posters hard to read due to the non crisp pixel resolution they use.

The performance is another point. I mean I can run the game maxed out without framedrops but there is a certain loading stutter at the beginning of levels plus my GPU is spinning up like it just got Crysis 4 to chew on. So optimization certainly is lacking.

Guns feel alright but also not amazing. Its serviceable but thats about it. Cant say I hated shooting though I also have seen better.

Secrets are well made and fit perfectly. Certainly way better than lets say Boltgun. And in that comparison this game here has better level design too. The level design is where the game shines. Very diverse and interesting looking, especially considering the games budget.

I do btw love the physics the game has like being able to kick wooden objects and make them splinter into many particles with physics. Very satisfying! Though the physics framerate seems to be limited to 30-60FPS. Thats at least what I noticed on my 144hz screen. I also dont get why there is a stamina system for the kicks considering the cooldown they have anyway. And since we are at it, why is there no jumping button? Sure, the level design takes it into account but I had cases like in the catacombs where I wanted to jump over a lava ground but then was like, "oh, right the game has no jumping, oh well guess I die".

Well when it comes to music I have to say that it certainly is something but sounds a bit amateurish if you ask me. Its not awful but its certainly nothing I would bother listening to outside the game. Definitely not on the level of the original Wolfenstein 3D.

No idea why they had to make the protagonist a hobo. Because making fun of minorities I guess. RWS is that you? I mean I dont really care with this kind of game tbh and I actually liked the plot with the dog and finding a rat friend along the way but the hobo stereotyping surely doesnt manage to make me laugh. Whatever floats your boat... The voice acting is good though.

Other small things I noticed: Mission finished screens are only in 16:9 and not 21:9 optimized. Sound mixing is meh by default but I managed to balance it better with the ingame settings. The default keys are also a bit unusual at times. Both rendering resolution or anti aliasing does not seem to affect objects that have the flashlight beam shine on them plus the shadows it casts are also aliased. Noticed a cell in the beginning of the second level that had no floor texture and was seethrough.

But I do have to honor the dedication the dev had with this game, let alone considering very few people worked on this and it seemed like it was mainly a one man show. Same for releasing the game free and even going so far to give it a USK rating so Germans can play it. That alone deserves a thumbs up.

But the game itself? Mediocre mostly. Sadly. Not bad at all but also nothing that manages to stick out in the current resurgence of the boomer shooter genre. But its better than Boltgun, which I really disliked. But there is certainly potencial to improve it with updates.

great game, funny and cheesy voice acting.
however, [strike] this game needs a wheel or some kind of hotkey for you to juggle your weapons.
using mouse wheel or pressing 1-9 while getting shot at, i wanna use the intented weapon for the moment, and yet I need 4 good seconds before i get to the weapon i want. [/strike] my bad, didnt know that you can press T lmao.

another thing, there is a a secret where you find a
flashlight
for all your weapons, i dont know how you can play without it. using a pistol for the dark areas is not fun because enemies are pretty spongy too.
some people may will miss-out on that secret and may put them off the game..
but still liked what the game has to offer

A homeless man, a dog called Gunther and the Nazis that stole him.

This simple but effective premise starts with you waking up in a ♥♥♥♥ prison cell with nothing but a grudge and a need to find your dog. It’s a nostalgia hit honing back to the original Wolfenstein 3D, starting you off in those classic blocky cells. The game itself doesn’t really stand out or do anything particularly new for the genre, but it’s still a lot of fun to play, and the age-old classic loop of hunting down keys to unlock the next area is satisfying and kept me playing.

The level design is pure old-school, featuring those classic blocky layouts where you're constantly scouring every wall for secrets and hidden gold. It takes advantage of the modern amenities a newer engine brings, allowing for more sophisticated levels and graphical enhancements while still retaining many of the design hallmarks that defined the original 2.5D era.

The weapon roster feels solid and hits all those classic notes you'd expect, from the basic Luger and MP40 to more devastating firepower as you progress, such as the heavy machine gun for shredding through crowds. It’s paired with a diverse lineup of enemy types—you’ll be going up against standard guards, aggressive hounds, and even more specialized foes like the SS ladies. You need to kill those ladies quick because they are incredibly fast and use dual pistols to pepper you with rapid fire. They really force you to stay mobile and pick your shots carefully so you don't get overwhelmed by their speed. Things get even cooler when horrific abominations spawned from ♥♥♥♥ experiments show up, providing the greatest example of how much this game leans into the Wolfenstein philosophy.

The combat is fun but nothing unique, essentially what you’d expect. However, I must give it credit because the enemies aren't hit-scanning you. You can actually strafe left and right to dodge incoming fire, which feels way more skill-based than the bullet sponge mechanics you usually see in retro-clones.

I also like the overall aesthetic and the little lore notes scattered around that give the world some actual depth. Even though lost note storytelling can be a bit overdone, I think it adds a nice layer of grit to the whole experience. The whole game feels like a cool mashup of different eras. While the level layouts are pure 1992, the enemies remind me more of the 2009 reboot with those blue aliens and the SS ladies remind me of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I noticed the difficulty spikes a bit randomly at times, but it’s a fair challenge once you learn the patterns.

For those wondering why it’s free to play, the game uses the classic shareware model where the first episode is free so you can get a taste of the action before deciding to pay for the future levels as they drop. I love that they stayed true to that 90s philosophy. Overall the game is good and it’s free, so why not try it, especially if you're into the FPS genre.
