Days of War: Definitive Edition
A modern attempt to re-create the World War II First Person Shooter games of the early-mid 2000s. Rating 5/10 Purchased Cost: Free When you think of the golden age of online first person shooters most of them have WW2 as a theme. From Day of Defeat, Call of Duty 1 and 2, Medal of Honour: Allied Assault, Battlefield: 1942 and Red Orchestra 1 and 2. Since then the World War II theme has fallen out of favour as Modern Warfare has taken over and well know game series such as Medal of Honour have died off. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2055461957 However in the last few years there has been a concerted effort to re-create these classics for the modern generation. So we have a gluttony of releases like Days of War, Battalion 1944, Vanguard: Normandy 1944, Hell Let Loose, Day of Infamy and Post Scriptum. We've never had so much choice, which is both a blessing and a curse. This leads me to the biggest complaint about this fresh wave of WW2 shooters. There simply aren't enough active players to support this many games. Most games outside of the well known franchises struggle to attract and keep players and this means that most games die off within a year and sometimes within a few months which is the case of Days of War. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2055462031 Thus a game has to be something truly special to keep an active player-base and this is where Days of War falters somewhat. Days of War released as an Early Access title in 2017 and has only just had a full release some three years later however the game only has one gametype, which is a take on Domination, and no competitive mode or round based game mode to attract competitive play or keep their current player-base invested in the game. As for the game itself, it's in a halfway-house between Day of Defeat and Call of Duty 2 without being as good as either game. The one thought you have as you play is that you would much rather be playing either of those games and it reminds you of how good those games were and how good that era of online gaming was. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2055462086 That's not to say the game is terrible, it's not. It just doesn't match up to the classics and when the game actively compares itself to those great games it's not flattering. One of the biggest issues with the game itself are the maps, they lack the simplicity and refinement as they are often cluttered with too much detail or are badly laid out. They also fall into the same trap as Red Orchestra in that most maps boil down to a single choke point which turns the majority of games into a meat grind. The most noticeable of these can be found on Bocage but is prevalent on most maps. It's worth mentioning the gun-play. The recoil is too random for most automatic weapons and enemies turn into bullet sponges which makes rifles the only real choice of weapon. However this isn't realistic recoil like Red Orchestra which is something to be learned and mastered this is just random recoil which gives the illusion of difficulty. Also the sounds for most of these weapons are also quite poor and they all lack a feeling of weight or any real heft. Combined with bullet sponge enemies and your actions in game feel very lightweight. Lastly I am also convinced that damage is also randomly allocated and this is unforgivable. It's a noble attempt at re-creating a time that has passed but sadly everything passes and there's no point trying to live in the past as it'll only be a disappointment.

Gameplay
Currently, there is only one game mode on offer: Domination, where the two teams compete to capture all the objectives on the map. Although the maps look nice and full of detail, they are not balanced at all. Firstly, the maps are too small for the number of objectives that are placed on them. There are usually only two avenues of approach to each objective, both of which can easily be covered which severely limits flanking opportunities. Also, the last objective of each map is placed dangerously close to the enemy’s spawn point and capturing it often requires waiting for a group of enemies to spawn, spawn-camping them and rushing to the objective. This brings me to the next issue; the map design greatly favors camping rather than forcing aggressive play as the maps have a lot of areas where someone can hide without the fear of being flanked. Additionally, the short time to capture and small capture areas limit the ability to block an enemy from capturing objectives, but to the developers’ credit, this also adds to the excitement of the game when it comes to capturing that last objective point. Overall, most of the games I played either ended up in one team absolutely crushing the opposition, or dragged on in a stalemate, and I attribute that mostly to the map design. Also, I still haven’t figured out how the pacing of the game works, but some games seem to go on much longer than they should. Finally, while the included game mode is fun for a few rounds, the lack of other varieties of modes can be felt. Included in the game are maps for an objective-based demolitions mode which I generally find more enjoyable than domination, but for some reason they were not on rotation. The gunplay is serviceable without being overly satisfying. There is the option of using iron sights, but there is really no reason to do so as they don’t provide any additional accuracy. Similarly, the sniper scope has a sway to it, but there is no way to stabilize it. Overall, weapon accuracy seems to be only dependent of whether a character is stationary or not, and stance seems to not have any effect on weapon spray patterns. Also, the weapons you unlock at later levels are not necessarily better than the default choices. Another issue with combat is the fact that there is little to no indication of being hit. The damage indicator is very small and is not visible at times. On the bright side, the low time to kill helps gunfights feel more engaging and gives the illusion of shooting powerful weapons. All in all, the game doesn't know if it wants to be an arcade shooter or a realistic one.Visuals and sound
Aside from the character models, the game looks good and is fairly detailed. Similarly, the sound design is clear enough to determine the location of enemies and hear voice-overs. But once again, the game suffers from a plethora of small issues that keep it from standing out from the crowd. Most importantly, the third-person animations of the enemies are sometimes not in sync with what they actually see. I was shot numerous times by an enemy that was looking the other way. Weapon design suffers from small issues as well. With rifles for example, after shooting just one bullet, the reload animation shows the player using a speed loader to load 5 bullets in the weapon. As another example, the same model has been used for the German frag and smoke grenades. Character voices are serviceable, and each faction speaks in their own language, except for the Russians which speak with a horrible English accent for some reason. Overall, the game looks good, but lacks attention to detail.Performance
The game plays well with brisk loading times and consistent frame rates and never did I experience any crashes. Surprisingly, at times after joining a game my keyboard and mouse would stop working, forcing me to quit the game using Alt+F4 and start it again. Also, the VOIP by default was not set to the same channel as the rest of the game audio.Verdict
Despite all the nitpicks, I actually had some fun playing Days of War. Most of the game’s many flaws are negligible, and it can look and play much better with a little bit of polish by the developers. However, the biggest issue with the game is the minuscule player base. There is an average of two to four human players in each game (most of them often on the same team), with the rest of the slots being filled by bots. Once again, serviceable, but not ideal. I received the game for free, but I don’t think the game contents warrant buying it at full price. And as much as I enjoyed my time with Days of War, the limited game modes and the lack of an active player base stops me from recommending the game. Days of War has the potential of being bigger and better than what it currently is, but I can’t recommend it at its current state.
