Wegen 3D damals viellecht?
Schade Schade

Bis auf eine Sache....
Die Steuerung. Also schlimmer gehts kaum. Muss man einfach sagen.

Grafik:
+ XBOX 360 Gamepad funktioniert ohne Probleme
+ Deutsche Sprachausgabe und Untertitel
+ schöne Zwischensequenzen
- manche Rätsel etwas unlogisch
- kein Hinweis-System (Ingame Hilfe) wie in Teil 1 und 2
- sehr grauenhafte Steuerung
- Monkey Kombat
- nervige Bugs
- Auflösung nicht änderbar
- Steam overlay bringt Spiel zum abstürzen
Fazit:

At the time, if I were to rank them, I would have said:
1. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
2. Escape From Monkey Island
3. The Curse of Monkey Island
4. The Secret of Monkey Island
Yes, I am a diehard fan, so if it has the title 'Monkey Island' on it I'm bound to enjoy it and bore any listener to tears about how great of a game it is. However, before someone thinks Escape was my first exposure to the series, I played them in order. As they were released. To be more specific, I played MI1 and MI2 in 1992, Curse around 1998 and Escape in 2000.
Months later when I went online I quickly saw the mixed reactions all over fan sites - I was really quite surprised. Was Escape perfect? No... but it seemed like fans were picking it apart for things that didn't even phase me, just because it was different. Yes, the game was now in 3D, it was no longer point-and-click, it had a new villain and LeChuck was more of a sidekick, they changed some of the voice actors, some islands felt less piratey (that's part of the story, common!), some of the back story could have been explained more clearly (Herman Toothrot's reveal is not a continuity error!), yes Melee looks different, yes Monkey Kombat can be a little tiring (but is it really deserving of all the hate?? I really enjoyed it and it reminded me of the insult sword fighting and ship to ship combat sequences in previous games)… but this was a new MI game! Why weren't people just grateful that we got another adventure game, in a time that adventure games were declared dead? Sadly, it made me realize that some fans really just enjoyed bashing it, as if it was some sort of demented sport. It seemed that what they really wanted was more of the same, rather than something new…
With the recent announcement of Return to Monkey Island, the unexpected news of an additional Monkey Island couldn’t have made me more excited! It also inspired me to go back and replay all of the previous titles. As it's been ~20 years, it's been really fun playing them again as they are both very familiar, yet in some ways seem like brand new adventures. They were great and they are great. I love them all, but that being said here are a couple of things I noticed after playing them again many years later:
1. Graphics: They are all dated. All of them. If I had to pick the one that I noticed the most this time around I would have to say Curse surprised me, as I remembered it as looking absolutely stunning, yet now with its low resolution it seems quite... rough. Graphically, MI1 and MI2 are about what I remembered... as even in 2000 they were dated. MI2's art is still beautiful though. And although the characters in Escape look quite sharp and jagged, I was actually surprised by how well it stood up. I also forgot how great the backgrounds are.
2. Story: They all have amazing stories imho. MI1 was as I remembered, but for some reason I MI2 was actually the one I didn't enjoy as much this time through. Don't get me wrong, it's still an absolute classic and arguably the best adventure game LucasArts created, but this time around I definitely noticed how 'dark' it really is, and I'm still not sure what I think of that ending. Curse is great, and they did a marvelous job trying to explain the MI2 cliff-hanger, but I can't help feeling that the ending was rushed. It seemed like they were trying to explain too much in too short of time, and the whole theme park could have been bigger with more locations and puzzles. The ending just came so fast. Now with Escape I'm not going to say that it was better than I remembered, but like MI1 my level of enjoyment was on par as when I first picked it up.
3. Time: As I replayed these games I didn't just do a speed-run clicking on the proper dialog lines and grabbing only what I needed. That being said, I also didn't try every single combination of combining inventory items or trying to hear every line in the game. What I did was something in between, where I tried to listen to as many choices as possible from the dialog trees, and find each of the hints of what to do next so that solving the puzzles made sense and I wasn't just relying on childhood memories of how to progress. As a result, one of the things I was surprised with then was that Escape was the longest game by far! These times are approximate, but I spent about 11. 2 hours playing MI1, 14.4 hours playing MI2, 8.7 hours on Curse, and 16.2 hours on Escape! I’m only mentioning this as Escape is a big game. It is a big, full-on adventure game with challenging puzzles, lots of characters to interact with, and a long, involved story.
Not to get sidetracked or anything, but with the announcement of Return to Monkey Island I’ve noticed something (this is relevant to Escape, so please bear with me… if you’ve bothered to read this far).
Fans are harsh. Strangely, some people just don’t seem to want to be excited. Rather, they seem to be fixating on things that imho shouldn’t matter that much. There’s been a backlash from some vocal fans about the graphics. First, many wanted the same old-school pixel graphics similar to MI1 and MI2 as Ron is placing his story between MI2 and Curse, so that he can write the story he always wanted to tell. Secondly, they have been piling hate upon the new art style that Ron has chosen… based on 4 screenshots and a teaser!
From what I can tell, it seems like every game beyond the original has had its fair share of fan controversy. Many fans didn’t like the ending of MI2, and LucasArts received written letters of complaint for months! Curse was the first game not led by Ron Gilbert, so for years fans have lamented that they wouldn’t know what that ending of MI2 was really supposed to mean. Others didn’t like the character art, while others complained about the treatment of certain characters (e.g. Wally and Elaine), as well as the short ending. With the development of the internet, those complains have become louder, and to be frank, many fans were upset with Escape even before it was released. Seeing that it was going to be 3D turned off many, and to be blunt they never gave it a fighting chance. I haven’t replayed Tales yet or delved into the fan reactions, but it seems that with each successive MI game the creators have had to deal with more and more disgruntled fans, as expectations have only increased with each release.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that Escape From Monkey Island is an absolutely classic adventure game that is definitely underrated and has received a lot of criticism, which I believe is much too harsh and unwarranted. It is a full-on LucasArts adventure game that has so many good things about it, and is an absolute pleasure to play. Unfortunately, it also is 4th in a beloved series and is written by different creators, so regardless of what they did, it would have been impossible to please everyone.
So, if you can get over the fact that Escape is different, then I am confident that you will find much to enjoy. For me, it’s almost too close to tell, but at this point I might even consider it my favourite Monkey Island game. That’s right. I said it. Move over LeChuck(’s Revenge).

Nope. Sorry. Some of the jokes are pretty funny, but the controls are awful. And I got to the monkey combat section and just gave up. I don't want to learn it, it's just extremely tedious. Insult sword-fighting was much better because the insults made sense. But having to write down combinations in response to different moves and figure out what's going on - where's the fun in that?
Forget it.

If you are looking to get into monkey island this probably isn't where you should start (Either go for the first or third game), but if you are an established fan who also enjoyed curse of monkey island and/or tales of monkey island, and you just want more, give it a try.

I am completely biased and as soon as I hear any of the soundtrack, large amounts of dopamine flood my brain. I have 1000s of hours on this game via the CD-ROM version, and still remember that distinct noise of the game asking you to put in CD-2. The feeling of knowing you've progressed far enough to do that!
I'm very much looking forward to Return to Monkey Island when it releases later in 2022.

Also, the 3-D element looks absolutely terrible in this game. Why not just keep it looking the same way? But LucasArts has devoted their entire existence to rehashing and updating the same idea over and over, so I guess it's no surprise.

Besides the bad controls (you kinda get used to it) notable mentions include:
1. Time sensitive puzzles - If you skip getting an item or you don't finish the puzzle in the allotted time, get ready to do it all over again.
2. Puzzles with precise placement of objects - combined with the awful controls, good luck with this one, as there are no clear projections.
3. Moon logic
4. Grindy puzzles - ties in with the first point.
5. Godawful graphics, even for the 2000s
There is just no charm in this one, and besides a few chuckles it feels like an empty shell of the previous instalment. Unfortunately not enjoyable.
Good luck!

Is this the worst monkey island game out there? No, not if you tweak the controls and up the resolution. After that it's actually one of my favourites after monkey island 3.
Bonus tip: follow the control configuration in the guides. Even if you are still planing on using the keyboard at least follow it partially so Guybrush doesn't control like a tank/old resident evil game.

It is definitely my least favourite of the four games.
Story, dialogues and puzzles are of the same quality as the previous games.
But I am not really a fan of the 3D art style and the wonky controls. Movement, inventory management (& combining items) were so annoying I wanted to give up. They should have stuck with 2D art style and mouse controls (like the previous games).
I recommend this game only for fans of Monkey Island who want to experience the final ending!

This has NOT aged well
I finally got around to playing the 3rd (Curse) and 4th (Escape) installments of the Monkey Island games. While the Curse hod me swooning over the oldschool 2d graphics, enjoying the fun puzzles, this one... was something different.
Technical trouble
Well, reviews tell it all (and yes, I knew what was I signing up for). The game is not really suited to run flawlessly out of the box on a current system. Using dgVoodoo2 helps make it bearable, but then there are the controls.
They are made with PS2 (gamepad) in mind (which means using one helps - KB controls are just silly) and on their own would not be THAT bad, but when you need to run between location a few times they get old. Fast. Very fast. And that's not the worst: the camera and locations are clunky, so you can easily get stuck on an NPC trying to go the other way around, or get a strobe-effect in a place that transitions the camera 180 degrees upon location change. Fun.
To top it off there's the stupid rotating inventory, not very functional and annoying to use.
Graphics
These are just nasty. It's a shame, because the previous 3 parts were really fun and cute and here it's a severe downgrade. Towards the end it gets sligtly nicer, but still nothing to write home about. The sad product of 3d-hype era.
Story and puzzles
These are a mixed bag, but overall I was disappointed. They were on a similar level to others in the series, but then comes the Monkey Kombat... It's not a puzzle, it's friggin' homework. If it wasn't for my wife who enjoys challenges like this I was inclined on calling it quits at that point. Towards the end I mostly wanted the journey to end :<
The humor is on-par with the series, but seriously, how many times can I hear the same joke about the inventory?
Conclusion
Go for it only if you are a hardcore fan and really, really want to experience the story. And even then consider watching a playthrough if you are not sure about your tolerance for finnicky old games. This one WILL test it.

Definitely my least favorite of the entire series though, they could of done a lot better job with this game. I think a lot of people are highly disappointed. The only thing that makes it good is how they put in some things from the other games to tie a few loose ends up.

Pro's
- Maintains theme and humour of previous games.
- Puzzles within are a refreshing upgrade from the easier and telegraphed monkey island 3.
- Longer than previous games in the series.
- Wraps up the open plot elements from previous instalments nicely.
Cons
- Controls (These require some learning/mapping. They are certainly not intuative and gone is access to your mouse)
- Graphics, Ack mine eyes! It is one of those games made in the unfortunate era where developers tried to make all games in 3d. Sadly the tech wasn't there properly at the time and this is often done to the detriment of detail and character within a game. This has therefore stood the test of time horribly compared to the pixelated 2d models of the previous games.
- Bugs A couple of endless pathing bugs encountered during play through (forcing a load from previous save) in addition to an early total crash out and issues if minimising the game during play from full screen.
Summary
After over coming the initial hurdle with the controls I did find Monkey Island IV to be refreshing and enjoyable. The Graphics might have been atrocious and the path finding temperamental however the puzzles and humour at the games core were back to the mind boggling levels previously enjoyed in the series. I have enjoyed the game and was disappointed it ended when it was done. However due to the issues encountered, I can only marginally reccomend this title, a sale as always, would make this games shortcomings more palatable.

There is however another problem with 3d, it's not a point and click anymore, so you have to use your keyboard or gamepad to move around. The game utilises a Grim Fandango engine, but it adds an option to switch from tank controls to the camera-based control, which does make the game easier to control, but pixel hunting is still a pain. There were multiple times, when I got stuck because I couldn't interact with something due to walking up from the wrong angle and thinking that the object was not interactable.
Pros:
+ Charismatic characters and funny dialogue
+ Good soundtrack
+ Puzzles feel more logical
+ Interesting story with lots of locations
Cons:
- Controlling a character feels hard at first
- You have to install fan patches make the game look decent
If you're a fan of previous ones and didn't have any problems with Grim Fandango, then this game is recommended for you. Otherwise wait for a remaster, that will hopefully be released someday.

Without Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, the Monkey Island games took a rapid downward plunge and certainly for me, the franchise ended after MI2. COMI was passable but not in the same league as the first 2 games.
This steaming pile of trash is a different kettle of fish entirely.
Devoid of the wit and charm that made the first 2 games so endearing, Escape from Monkey Island plods along with awful 3D graphics (think Grim Fandango but less charming), a terrible 3D inventory interface (think Grim Fandango but a little uglier), and a shockingly bad control system (think Grim Fandango).
Yes, Grim Fandango was able to get away with all of the above elements, but that was only because it had a great game lurking underneath
I've played it through once, and that was painful enough that I will not go back to it. I'm not even going to touch on 'Monkey Kombat'...
Stick with SOMI and MI2, and at a push, COMI. But save your money, your energy and your sanity and avoid this one.
LucasArts should have pulled an Atari on this and buried it out in the desert.

I spent many hours of these years to first figuring how to get it to run without immediate crash (it doesn't like multi-monitor systems to turn off extra monitors); then how to get the cutscenes to display (was audio only); only to then get soft-locked at the two pirate's chess game on Lucre Island (TM) after 2.7 hours of game play.
Luckily, today I have found a solution to all these problems which is to run the game in the latest DEV build of ScummVM (support only added 2 weeks ago so not in stable yet). Haven't had single issue in ScummVM for the 6 hours I have playing it in there (despite it being an unstable build). I just ran first go once I pointed it to the game files that came from Steam. I have even got past the two pirate's chess game.
So no, I don't recommend this game on Steam. But if it's being sold for cheap during a sale, pick up a copy so that you can get a legitimate copy of the game files and then play it in ScummVM without any problems.
As for the actual game play: I feel LucasArts sort of went backwards from Grim Fandango as far as 3D puzzle adventure games goes. The pre-rendered world doesn't bring you into the story as it did that game, even when taking into account the games age. Also, the limitations of 3D technology of the time has really reduced the amount of charm that 2D hand drawn predecessors had. The game controls make playing some of the puzzles really difficult to complete, and also extremely frustrating when you need to turn around, but the character can only turn really slowly. I'm glad game developers these days have managed to work out that these were all bad ideas (for the most part).

Tried to use keyboard big NOPE..
Avoid..
I really wanted to play this but controls are just so bad I had to refund.. Played less than 30 seconds. The rest of minutes went to try to sort the controls out. I kid you not. WHY make a game that you destroy with the player not being able to play it due to horrible bad and utterly crazy controls??? Just for the sake of having a nicer looking menu?
You see when you customize the controls to suit you better, well then you have to use them for the MENU.. Yes. The ordinary enter click will not work anymore but you have to use the customized key now to use the menus as well..
Why?? just why..

So if you don't want to miss out on the story, just go and watch a let's play (not a blind one).

Wew this is easily the worst Monkey Island. Which saddens me as it is the only one I played as a kid so I'm pretty nostalgic for it.
The game does not use the mouse at all despite being a point 'n click..the way the controls work is you control Guybrush with the arrow keys by turning left & right & pressing up to walk forward, Resident Evil style. Instead of highlighting items it shows three options on screen you can select with Page Up/Down depending on Guybrush's view, so you will have to wrestle with the horrible movement to try and get him to look at whatever thing you want.
Take these unbearable controls & mix them into the most convoluted Monkey Island (beating 2 for me). The opening island is okay, but by the time you explore the 2nd island your area will be massive, filled with tons of items to pick up & no clear direction on what to do.
So then take the horrible controls & the difficult puzzle solving to mix it with the worst Inventory in the series. The Inventory screen is a wheel you cycle through one by one rather than pages of items you can immediately select, you slowly have to have to pull items out of it to physically hold it & then move Guybrush around to interact with what you want. If the item didn't work you need to then slowly put it back in your inventory, reopen the inventory, scroll to a new item, pull the new item out & try again.
While you might think these complaints seem minor the combination of all of them in this game make it the most frustrating point 'n click I have ever played. These games depend on fluid & well implemented mechanics/controls so the player is in the best position to solve the problems.
It's pretty amazing that Monkey Island 1-3 & even 5 all improved on the series. Making everything more streamlined, improving controls & making it all run smoother to compliment you trying to solve the puzzles. Escape From Monkey Island is a step back in every category. You will be much more frustrated trying to play this game than any other in the series.
It can still be worth a playthrough if you enjoy the series story & comedy, but if you choose to play this game I highly recommend playing along with a guide to get through it.

Unfortunately this one was not remastered. Which is a shame, since it has all of the writing of the other monkey island games, but is wholly crippled by a bad control scheme.
If the game as a whole was bad, the bad control scheme would be a moot point, but in this case it's really only the controls holding it back from being a gem like the other monkey island games.
I'd love to recommend this game, but I cannot in good faith, given that it is functionally unplayable.

Judging from the reception at the time and retrospective reviews of this game I expected something horrifically awkward to control and a mediocre game at best overall. Whilst the tank controls are absolutely RUBBISH compared to good old pointing and clicking they really aren't so bad once you get used to them. The game itself cannot compete with the first three games but what a ridiculously small target that is to hit in the first place. The graphics are for the most part very good and have not aged badly at all. The voice acting is probably the worst overall of the series, with some actors being different to MI3 and Tales. The most subjectively disappointing part of the game was the locations reimagined from previous games. Whilst I liked them I feel the designers missed a trick by not being more faithful to the original designs in the series.
One small annoyance is that Steam's in-game overlay and associated features don't work. This is a rarity even for older games than this.
Overall this is an excellent game if you are a Monkey Island fan. We enjoyed playing it and I now wish I hadn't waited ten years to play this before Tales which is better, though sadly not available to purchase at time of writing. Sort it out whoever owns the rights! I will definitely revisit this game again in the future.
