Sehr guter (360) Controller Support.
Toller Klassiker.

It’s kind of weird going back to Shadow Complex, as it represents a time before we got a new metroidvania every week on steam. In fact, back in the misty halcyon days of 2010 the 2D metroidvania was all but dead outside of the odd handheld release. Metroid hadn’t had a 2D entry since 2004’s Zero Mission, and Castlevania had been on something of a downward spiral during the DS era.

So a decent metroidvania was, if you can believe it, something of a breath of fresh air, especially a glossy high budget one on XLBA. Shadow Complex does nothing new, but it’s studied the old masters diligently and even now some solid production values shine through. Some upgrades are straight lifts from Super Metroid, and while it’s visually distinct enough to not invite direct comparisons its hard to shake the feeling we’ve done all this before.

The main area Shadow Complex trips up is in its combat. As it uses 3D environments it has enemies in the background to give the illusion of depth, and when you aim at them the crosshair will automatically deal with the Z axis on its own. That’s the theory at least, and in practice it’s incredibly finicky. Whether or not it actually locks on or just fires at a wall next to your face seems to be at the whims of fate. Thankfully the game isn’t hard enough so that this becomes a genuine issue – in fact the bosses are absolute pushovers.

As less serious flaw, Shadow’s Complex’s story is hilariously shit. Written by mad Mormon homophobe Orson Scott Card, the plot of Shadow Complex is a preposterous right wing fever dream. The antagonist of the game are left wing anarchists, who ludicrously have formed a paramilitary organisation intent on bringing down the world order, rather than their usual MO of impotently demonstrating and eating hummus. The “human drama” of the plot is also pitifully bad, though for more traditional “boring characters with boring dialogue” reasons rather than anything particularly laughable.

Overall though Shadow Complex is still a fun, well designed little game that stands out due to being a proper high budget studio game rather than a pixel art adventure made by one guy. It’s not worth paying a lot for, but there’s worse ways to spend a weekend.

I'm pretty conflicted towards this game. While I overall enjoyed my time with it, Shadow Complex wasn't as good as I had hoped, being more of a 7/10 experience. A recurring issue is that Shadow Complex is strong in its lategame, but significantly weaker prior to the later portions of the journey.

For 2009, it may have been more impressive as an uncommon metroid-esque title, but in 2021, where the genre is oversaturated, this game feels pretty basic. Shadow Complex just isn't a game to go out of your way for. If at all possible, I recommend getting this game at a lower price, if you’re interested in playing.

The premise is that a guy named Jason is exploring caves with his girlfriend, only for the girlfriend to be abducted by terrorists and taken into a secret, underground military fortress, with Jason having to rescue her. Unfortunately, the story is extremely clumsy and mediocre, which wouldn't be such an issue if the game didn't frequently make me sit through cutscenes, halfheartedly expecting me to care about its nonsensical plot. Just try to ignore the plot, it is forgettable at best.

Shadow Complex captivated me, since it’s the closest thing I have experienced to a First Person Shooter that is also a 2.5D metroidvania. The game emphasizes headshots, cover shooting, grenade throwing, melee takedowns, and it rewards competent 360 degree aiming. If you are not able to comfortably aim your gun, Shadow Complex will be as frustrating as any shooter.

I really enjoyed this FPS aspect of the game, and it gave it a bit of a unique flavour for a sidescroller. Shadow Complex also does really well at making you feel like a badass super soldier, running and gunning through legions of grunts.

As you unlock more abilities, the combat gets addictive as you start to break the rules of FPS combat, combining precise shooting with double jumps, superspeed, and grappling hooks. I never got tired of speeding through bad guys, or grappling over them, only to unload a rocket into them as I flew by. Shadow Complex really shines when it makes the player feel quite cool and stylish when they get to combine conventional weaponry with metroidvania upgrade tropes.

Sadly, Shadow Complex withholds all of its cool toys for most of the game, forcing players to make do with the dullest tools (most of which are overlapping explosives that open doors). By the time you get to play around with the most interesting upgrades, you're nearing the end of the game.

This causes a lot of early progression to feel pretty underwhelming. It is quite disappointing because the later upgrades are pretty damn awesome and really transform the game in cool ways. Shadow Complex would have been so much better if some of the better upgrades were woven into the early game to spruce up the action.

One other missed opportunity with the combat is the boss battles. The bosses tend to be big mechs that look imposing, but can easily be killed by spamming explosives. There is minimal strategy or depth to these battles. Every boss feels too similar to one another, resulting in really bland fights. With how much fun the basic combat could be, the bosses were a big waste of potential.

The exploration and world for Shadow Complex is solid, allowing for as much or as little guidance as the player wants (something more metroidvanias should offer). Although much like the combat, the world and exploration doesn't really hit its stride until later on, when the map greatly expands and lets you choose between objectives.

There are plenty of optional collectibles scattered throughout the world, and if you find enough of them, the game handsomely rewards you with some really powerful upgrades. I actually got 100% on Shadow Complex because of how much fun the lategame was, and the rewards I received really enhanced my enjoyment.

The aesthetic and tone of the Shadow Complex resembles that of a generic western AAA shooter. Although the aesthetic is lacking in charm, it was interesting to see a 2.5D metroidvania that tried to have a more photorealistic, cinematic look, rather than the animated aesthetic of a Hollow Knight or a Bloodstained.

Ironically, an aesthetic so generic manages to feel kind of original, when used in a different genre and dimension. For a 2.5D game from 2009, Shadow Complex does look pretty good graphically, and its impressive how well they translated a 3D aesthetic into 2.5D.

Unfortunately there were a couple issues with the 2.5D style of Shadow Complex. Often, the background and foreground of would often blend together, causing me to sometimes move to platforms that were not actually there, leading me to fall to my death.

Other times it could be tricky to find the correct path through a room because of how muddled things could get. Shadow Complex also has enemies in the background, which can often be annoying to deal with. Aiming to shoot at background enemies with a controller felt incredibly inconsistent, making combat sections difficult in an annoying way.

I switched to mouse and keyboard which thankfully solved this issue. I normally hate keyboard controls for sidescrollers, but shadow complex works surprisingly well with a mouse+keyboard setup. If I had to continue with a controller, I’d have uninstalled Shadow Complex.

One final issue with Shadow Complex is how mediocre the PC port is. For a 2009 game that got a pc port years later, it should not have such a flimsy framerate. Shadow Complex could get pretty sluggish at times, most notably in outdoor areas. It was never unbearable, but it was certainly irritating.

Overall, Shadow Complex is an interesting, but flawed take on the 2D metroidvania formula that often misses the mark. I’d love to see this Western, FPS, 2D metroidvania concept tackled again, because Shadow Complex was pretty damn fun when it excelled. I don’t see a Shadow Complex sequel ever happening, so it is a real shame that this game didn’t knock it out of the park.

If you want an older metroidvania, predating the indie craze, Shadow Complex is not a bad way to spend your time.

I may have only played this for 19 hours on Steam but that's only because I logged hundreds of hours with this game on the Xbox 360. Incredible game. Best Metroid type game I've played probably since Super Metroid or Metroid Fusion. If you like that type of game you will absolutely love Shadow Complex. It's 12 years old at this point but the gameplay totally holds up. I can't recommend it enough.

Do yourself a favor and play it with a 360 controller if you have one. It's enjoyable with a Steam controller but the 360 controller's dual sticks make aiming a lot easier.

Fun 2.5D side scroller with metroidvania doors.
Solid game, no bugs to think of, everything seems balanced and on point.
Only thing I don't like is that it's Pub by EpicGames.
It's short so get it on sale, $10-12 seems fair to me.

Pros:
Decent looking
Has the Metriodvania feel
2.5 is a cool touch
Lucius
The Hook(shot)
A pretty big map
You can get some upgrades earlier if you are good a jumping

Cons
This game has some bugs that ruin the experience (bosses doing nothing or their mechanics not working).
Aiming at enemies in the background can be a nightmare
Enemies shooting you from off screen or in the background is bad programming (especially if you can't see or shoot them)
The story has a beginning and an ending. But the middle gives you no real context to what is going on.
^Thus, you feel like you are playing an empty game against machines and you are a machine.
Information on stats or tips on killing bosses are either few or non-existent. I still can't tell you what leveling up does.
But at level 30 you unlock a perk that eliminates the need for specific collectables... why would you do that?
The ending fight is ridiculous and ridiculously stupid. It's the easiest part of the game requiring 0 skill or need to fight your gun.
Upgrade the gun makes it fire slower and feel like it packs less of a punch but have a larger clip.
*The final gun packs a punch but shoots like a shotgun which throws off everything you were used to.
Map has no interactively. You can't label areas to revisit and it doesn't show secrets. From my understanding you might unlock an ability to see some secrets, but that involves unlocking that ability... by finding 12 gold bars...
The game is short (14 hrs on insane and 2 of them was me messing around).

I do not recommend this game at the price it is. It's a broken remaster and sorely disappointing. The intro scene and the rest of the game don't make sense and serves as a tutorial of gameplay you won't unlock until halfway through the game.

Soft pass on this game.

It's not a groundbreaking metroidvania, and it's quite short. However, Shadow Complex is incredibly well designed. At first, it appears that the game is very linear for an exploration-heavy genre, but once you come to understand the power of foam (I'm not kidding) you'll realize that the map is very sequence-break friendly. Also groin-kicking people across the room will always be entertaining.

All and all, Shadow Complex is worth a buy. A noteworthy entry in the history of metroidvanias, predating the indie-metroidvania boom by quite a few years.

When this first came out on the Xbox 360 I never got around to finishing it. Well now that the remastered version was in my backlog I finally completed a playthrough. It was still as fun as I remember but I did have one bug where I kept getting stuck floating above the water but my oxygen was depleting like I was under the water. I had to fight with the movement to get unstuck.

Shadow Complex is a great metroidvania style game with a decent story. I also did not realize Nolan North voiced the main character. It well worth a play and still holds up pretty well over the years.

This game is one of my favorite games of all time. I absolutely love it! I have the original on XBOX 360, and the Remastered version on the XB1X, Steam, Epic Game Store, and the PS4 Pro with a physical copy from Limited Run Games. The Steam version is a great port and feel at home when you use an XBOX controller.

If you love Metroidvanias then you owe it to yourself to play this game. Especially if you love Super Metroid.

A bit of Shadow Complex lore. Before the game debuted on the Xbox 360 Microsoft released a demo. Uh oh, then they found out they had actually released the full game albeit you could not save. Once this was discovered anyone who accessed the game had an automatic patch applied disabling the full game from being played. Of course if you disconnected your Xbox from the internet and set it offline before the patch you could in fact play the whole game for free in one sitting.

As for the game itself it is classified as a Metroidvania 2D shooter, plays great, looks great, supports resolutions up to 4K and controls effortlessly with either a keyboard mouse setup or controller. Steam support includes cloud saving, achievements, leader-boards and remote-play.

So excited to finally see this game on Steam. I played it multiple times on Xbox 360 years ago and it was great fun, one of the best Metroidvanias I have ever played. I also replayed the game on Xbox One when they added backwards compatibility and then again on PC when it was given away for free on the Epic Games client. Now it's on Steam and I bought it day one. What does that tell you?

If you've never played this game before, think near-future 2.5D Metroidvania set in a mazlike military base. You kill enemies, search for hidden collectibles and slowly build a futuristic suit which allows you to double jump, swim, breathe underwater and power punch enemies into oblivion. It's a blast.
