Über das Spiel

Beschreibung

There are a few things I would like to say about this game:
- this is the first game of the dev Erebus and I compliment him for creating such nice piece
- the controls are easy and the atmosphere of the game is heavy
- the story behind all these things is a lot better than in other indie horror games I have played
- the german translation could be better :D
- I would love to see more games of this dev and I would like to thank him for the experience of playing God's Basement.

Note für God's Basement: 6/10

Empfehlenswert: Nein (persönliche Wertung: 3/10)

Errungenschaften: Ja (einmal durchspielen reicht)

Positiv:
- hübsche Grafik
- cooles Menü

Negativ:
- Spielfigur extrem langsam

This is an enjoyable 2-3 hour indie horror game with some solid scares and interesting puzzles. It's very much a PT style game where the puzzles require you to focus on things in the environment to make events happen. I think that worked well overall, but it did sometimes slow the pace to a crawl and start canceling out the tension/dread from the last horror encounter. In the next game, I would recommend that the dev better integrate horror into some of the longer puzzles to keep the tension going.

Regarding the plot, I think the overall narrative was solid. However, the way it was conveyed was a bit too on the nose got my taste. I found myself consistently far ahead of the character in terms of knowing what was going on, which weakens the impacts of any twists and revelations. This is a short indie horror game, so you have limited time to convey the story, but I would still be a bit more mysterious with the notes/audio messages/scenes to make the hints less obvious. In particular, the end game monologue was way too direct. It was at the end of the game and I understand the impulse to wrap everything up with a nice bow, but that was too direct. I’m not saying you need to go to the other extreme of explaining nothing and leaving everything open to interpretation, but I think there’s a happy medium.

Overall, I enjoyed the game, but I wouldn’t recommend it at full price, since it is quite short and it has some minor issues with the plot and puzzles, as I noted above. However, it regularly goes on sale for $2.99 and it’s definitely worth it at that price.
I’m glad to have supported the developer, who, based on the end game credits, is quite new to making games. Dev, if you’re reading this, you made a very good game here, especially for a project early in your game creation career. It has flaws, but some do most AAA games. Keep working at your art and I’m sure your next game will be even better!

Acceptable at the $2.99 price. Some parts were a slog. Some early parts were a bit bugged. A good effort was made, and not bad for an early attempt by a single dev.

I liked the gameplay and the scary feeling.

BUT I can't relate to the story because I don't live in the states.
Here in Germany we have a nice healthcare system. And what bothered me the most was the decision of the protagonist. If the protagonist was smart enough to get a scholarship, then he could've found a better solution for his grandma. Like that bish is living in a mansion. Never occured to him to sell it and put her in a nursing home?
I really liked the story line of God's Basement. If you're not used to horror games, this one does give you
jumps, but not at all nightmarish. It makes you think about your own life after death and in a weird way, it provided me with comfort. We're all gonna die and face our demons, but this makes it a more thoughtful insight of what could be the first stage into the next life. Thank you God's Basement! You gave me food for thought. I also enjoyed the environments. I laughed when I was put to work cause those are the kinda jobs I'm used to. Overall, it was a good game and definitely worth playing! Oh and one more thing...good luck.

The Good: Sound Design is on Point, as is the Level Design and the level selector and menu

The Ok: Puzzles can be not /tricky/ per say but very temperamental.

The Bad: I cannot for the life of me recommend the story. As much as the narrations monotone was lovely it was hasty and thrown together quickly at the end. I wish this developer luck in future games, but this one wasn't quite a hit.

Managed to get my sister who hates horror games to play this by herself. Told her its basically a walking simulator kind of horror game and she recently played the game while live streaming it to me. She had some moments where she was too scared to go forward and some parts where she was stuck. Told her how to do some parts because i didn't want her to stop playing.

The hallway jump scared made me laugh when she screamed. With some encouragement she didn't quit after that.

I respect the game dev for trying his/her best effort. But sadly, I cannot recommend this game... It has great atmosphere and sound design and has it's moments, but sadly the way that it tells (not shows) the story is so repetitive and boring, and also the puzzles are just plain garbage.

If you want to try it for a few bucks, go ahead... It will frustrate you to play thought it, but you'll have at least one good scare.

A cool idea which is genuinely unnerving until its flawed game play becomes tedious and annoying. To progress you may have to find a key, find an item or perhaps locate a series of sequential triggered events. This slows down the game to the point I've quit playing out of boredom two times now. Atop of that I found a toppled over shelf that could move but it seemed it was glitching. Thinking it was meant to be a movable object I quit the game, replayed to that point then found it wasn't supposed to move at all. This isn't a bad game, I just didn't think I purchased a Spot Hidden Object walking sim. It's a thumbs down from me until I can be bothered to finish it and give it another analysis.

To start of this game feels a little bit rough, having an introduction with a character that brings a lot of exposition dialogue and solutions to puzzles that were quite unclear, gave me not the best impressions to start.

Because I can understand that even if you improvise decisions to make progress in each level, you could assume that some other people wouldn't be able to make progress because they wouldn't consider such choices
(Which explains why is there a 'hint' mechanic implemented if you're stuck for more than 3 minutes)

But regardless of that and if you are able to push through, you find a very decent and creepy walking simulator.

The story behind seems pretty simple at first, themes and tropes you would easily find in similar horror games. But the execution of this one showed a fair amount of effort, by not blatantly telling you the full story from the start and giving room to certain revelations and extra steps you wouldn't fully expect in such story.

My few issues that could be taken from this experience, is the need to have the only speaking character info dump levels you just cleared, and rather unclear puzzles that didn't come to you being picky, but more towards you coming up with random options to try and figure it out (without the hints the game provides).

The scenery and sound design were enough to give you a sensation of constantly being in a liminar space going back and forth and given the theme of the game it seemed intentional and succesful.

A slightly off execution but still with great effort and worth checking out yourself.

Uhh....this is the slowest walking simulator ever made.
It has a story, trying to be good and deep, but its just repeating the same corridors at some levels for reading 1 new short memory each. The mood was quite right, but the slowness of the character, even while running and the fact its stucks on the stairs and has to zoom in and stand sideways to actually walk up makes it....disappointing...
[tl;dr]
Granny ended up as a psycho, so did you. Because after a tragedy your parents made a quite selfish decision which included leaving your grandma all alone in a vulnerable time. Which lead to crazyness and another tragedy.

Basically this is the whole story.

Your grandpa died in an accident with your older brother before you were born. Granny survived. Your parents left and neglected granny who went crazy alone, then murdered your parents so she could raise you. She also went insane by this and ended up mentally even more broken as a human shell, and you gave up your college scholarship to take care of her, and you were resentful and killed your own grandma.... Then due to guilt you overdosed yourself with pills... This is the full story you can find out by reading some papers you find once in a while on the levels....
And for finding out this I've wasted 6 hours of my live which I will never get back....

As an avid horror game player. May I suggest something to help with any future projects. More scary, less droning audio through a in game radio. I actually had someone fall asleep while watching me play this game. God's Basement is a psychological horror walking sim. In the story you're trapped in this Basement and need to regain your past life memories to pass on... or not. The game is narrated, a bit like The Stanley's Parable but this one is not based on comedy. You will not really die because in the game you're already dead so just jump at danger like there's no tomorrow and have fun.

It was an overall fun game to play, although recommended to buy this when on sale because 20 dollars for 2 hours of game-play seems like a bit much. Other than that, great story, great details, perhaps a few more jumpscares would be sufficient but overall I had a great time playing this. Hoping for a possible part 2, or a sequel. :)

I been thinking of what to write about this game. This walking simulator takes you through a life your character is trying to remember. The concept of this game was good, but in all honesty the execution was not that great. To me this game was not scary, in fact it was a bit boring. This walking sim would be best reserved for you to watch rather than purchase. This was way over priced for the content of the game.

Have you ever wanted to be stuck in limbo, and do a walking simulator to figure out why you are there? How about having your journey narrated by the guy who does Murder Trivia for Jackbox? A few jumpscares? Then this is the game for you. Good for casual games, the game has built in hints if you get stuck on puzzles, kinda interesting story but nothing too crazy. If you buy it, buy it on sale.

God's Basement is an interesting Silent Hills inspired game.

What is death like? Is it like all your past memories flashing by your very eyes before you die? Is death terrifying, Pleasant or both? Are your memories mixed with an unspeakable evil? God's Basement is pretty much like this. So God's basement is a very cool idea as death contains fear and mystery. The game here is scary and contains a lot of P.T elements and mechanics and some puzzles in the game can be a little tricky as you don't always know what you need to do to trigger certain events in the game and I think this kind of thing can get a little annoying for some players but I kinda like it as a fan of the puzzles in P.T. The Grandma here is also a very creepy looking character and looks pretty messed up and while I am not the biggest fan of the jumpscares here I do actually like how she spends most of the game just watching and stalking you which I feel is great as that is more creepy in my opinion. The way she looks, Walks and behave is unnatural so to make a long story short I find her to be a pretty cool ghost in the game and she is actually pretty creepy in my opinion. God's basement contain a pretty short but interesting horror experience and one I was very invested in as Life, Memories and death is what I consider to be relevant themes and can really provide a cool horror experience if done right. I can recommend God's basement but while it's a good P.T inspired game I would recommend you get it on a sale as it is a bit clunky here and there and some of the puzzles can be a bit tedius. It's a good game for what it is and it's mostly just a walk sim with some puzzles here and there so keep these things in mind and you should probably be able to enjoy God's Basement.

The jumpscares, while expected, still got me. The music built suspense. The mini games were engaging for the most part. But 50 boxes? It was enough to want to close the game and not finish. To push the storyline forward it should have been shorter. Otherwise, it was a good time.

God's Basement is a non-combat style horror game, a walking-sim if you will, that mostly tells you a story of the main protagonist from start to finish. It's short, about 3 hours not rushing. It plays well and only encountered one bug. Bought it on sale and feel it was worth the price at the time. There's not much to say, but if you want to play a horror game without combat or stealth elements, just want to be spooked by the environment and atmosphere then this game is great for that.

So let's just get it right out in the open that this game is nothing like a horror-based Stanley Parable or any kind of anything like that. This is a door opening simulator (some are locked! some are not! you have to try them all to find out!) with a clumsy layout but a seriously dark story that does a good job of propping up the action. The interesting thing is that the developer makes no secret about this being one of their first projects and it shows. It shows everywhere. But it's a great FIRST game. If this was a developer's 9th game, I'd tell them to hang it up but for a first or second attempt, there's a lot to build on here.

The one thing that shows this more than anything is the level where
the main character organizes 50 boxes onto shelves in another room. That's it. That's the whole level. I understand the point it was making but it's also asking someone to stack up 50 boxes on shelves. there's a reason more games don't employ this technique.
I get the soul-sucking-ness of the intention there but... I mean damn.

Between things like that and the never ending search for the next 'door unlock' trigger, the whole thing was a bit of a drag but I still am glad that I played it. If the story wasn't so sharp it would have fallen apart but that was impressive enough on its own.

The asking price is too high.
This is one of those games that requires you to go back and forth to trigger certain events or changes, in order to move forward.
Problem is, it's way too specific too often, and too many times you have to wait for what seem like too long for certain things to finish, in order for you to progress.
Thus any tension that might have been built is broken.
Some thought has been put into this, so i might check out future projects, however the current price of 12$ has to come down to justify a purchase.

I tried to give this game a fair shot because the story is intriguing, beautiful graphics and good atmosphere but the game is almost unplayable even if you use the free hints the game gives you. Most of the puzzles have no clues and more often than not you end up sitting around and waiting for something to happen feeling you must have missed something. After being forced to stare at the games monster for the third time as it flinches and shakes until it loses any fear you have in it. The game is a walking sim with no real threat so as soon as you get bored of flashing lights and a monster they show way too often while it does nothing it's not even worth finishing the game for the story. I'd give this one a hard pass. It has everything going for it but wastes it away with bad puzzles, boring gameplay and making the only scary parts of the game humorous and annoying by showing the scares for too long and facing no threat.

the jump scares in this game are awesome and the game really builds tension in a great way. There were a few puzzles that were tricky to figure out (and you have to solve the puzzles to get some of the scares) which kind of took away from the scare. Overall though I enjoyed the game and would like to see this developer make more games!

I played a good chunk of this game and ended up looking up a Full Game Playthrough on YT to watch at x2 speed because it is so slow. I don't know if the devs were just trying to make the game longer by restricting the movement speed but it really hurt the gameplay for me.

Plenty scary! Jumpscares are there of course, but also a genuine sense of foreboding and fear throughout. The musical score and atmosphere are perfect. Also who knew it would have such a GREAT story? It's short but powerful. An amazing experience!

This game feels very unfinished. There are many low light circumstances and it's easy to get stuck on the level geometry with no visual cues of how to get back. If you spin your camera (which is easy to do in these situations while trying to move randomly and free yourself) too much it eventually bugs out and gets stuck so that it no longer works properly (camera is only works at some orientation, if you go above the horizon the camera skips and you're pointed straight up).

In section 2
when you look at the god does not forgive me letter, i walked backwards from the table
and fell through the map. I've only played for like 15 minutes so far and I've had to reload each section multiple times due to bugs.

Even worse, when you DO reload, you lose your progress for that section; the problem with this is there are a lot (so far) of events that take time and are you cannot skip them
such as the operator calling you with a message
; you must sit through these over and over.

Also the tasks (so far) you're given are in many cases impossible to figure out without the hints.

Got it on sale for $3.00 so no big deal, but for the normal asking price it simply does not work well enough.

I am giving up for now, I hope the bugs get fixed and I can play through and change my review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game! Amazing job with everything, especially the lack of jumpscares and emphasis on atmosphere. Erebus, if you're reading this, bravo! I would love to play any other games under your brand.

Do you enjoy predictable story lines? Do you also enjoy having all of the plot points repeated back to you by a narrator, in case you were too dumb and illiterate to get it the first time around? Great, then you'll love this game...
Started off promising enough, couple jump scares. Then quickly realized my actions have no consequences in the game, so all sense of suspense was lost. Held out hope that maybe it was some sort of social commentary. But no such luck. In the end, it pulled a Dallas, and I had to listen to our trusty narrator spend five minutes explaining the story... again...

Fantastic game in my opinion. This game is like a Horror version of the Stanley Parable. Has a great story too with an intresting take on Hell and Heaven, Death and Life. Its more of a walking simulator than anything else. It has puzzles in it that really easy to solve. Some of them will piss you off however, because it does not hold your hand in what you're supposed to do all the time. The only thing I can really gripe about the game is its length. If you know exactly what to to and how to do it, the game will only take you around an hour to complete. Great game over all though. Would recomened at a discounted price, but it has its moments where it's worth full.

This is not a good game. I get that it is the developers first game but the quality level and necessary implementation of basic gameplay mechanics just isn't there for a game that isn't free.

This game is definitely creepy, and the atmosphere is excellent. The controls work well, and the game looks very good. There is also one interesting, creative detail at the end that I enjoyed.

The problem is that the puzzles, with one or two exceptions, rely entirely on luck and guesswork. You have to either look in the right direction at the right time or stare at something from juuuust the right angle for a long time in order to proceed in the game. The going is very slow because there's no way to know what you're supposed to look/stare at or whether you're staring at the correct thing but the angle/distance is not just right. I spent 50 minutes in a room that was not even part of a puzzle because as I explored, I was not looking in the correct direction to trigger an event to progress the game. Those are not good puzzles, and they are not fun to try to solve. There's no logic to them at all.
Also, there are several points where the narrator recaps what you've learned so far and spells everything out in excruciatingly obvious detail. It slows the game down even more, and it's very insulting to be treated like a simpleton or a child who can't piece together a rather simple story.

This is one of the most frustrating games I have eve played. It starts with an interesting opening, and keeps your attention for the first half hour or so, until it ruins what it has in a few key ways:

1. Blows it's load early by showing you the monster several times and then going on to demonstrate that there is no actual danger, as each time you're caught it is a necessary thing to advance to the next chapter. There is no game over.

2. Have the pace of the horror grind to a halt every 10 metres to have you solve 'puzzles' with entirely arbitrary solutions. The amount of times what you need to do to progress is to look in a certain place for several seconds becomes a joke. And not just look, you have to specifically zoom in and stare at things for the game to register it. These puzzles are truly awful, to the point where the game acknowledges it and offers you a hint if you spend me than three minutes in a room. I say 'hint', but it quite literally tells you exactly what to do and what will happen, so its a choice between spending half an hour trying to figure out what random thing the game wants you to look at, or looking at the hint and having everything spoiled for you. Perhaps these puzzles needed to have been redesigned if you need to include this feature.

3. It's own rules of gameplay are inconsistent and (sorry to have to keep using this word) arbitrary. When searching for items can you open drawers and cupboards? No, the world is static. Ok, so why do you have a puzzle half way through where the solution involves opening a drawer? You've already established that I shouldn't waste my time with checking them so why change that now? Everything you can interact with has some purpose in progressing the game. Except at one point where there is a single pen which you can pick up and look at. Give me rules here game, either have a Frictional games style system where you can interact with the world or don't.

4. Strings you along with its mystery and then bores you to death by reiterating exposition that you've already learned as well as giving up on creativity in its environments. The middle portion is a truly terrible imitation of P.T, without the charm or pace.

Some good atmosphere early on but for the price this is honestly just terrible.
Erebus, next time aim for a two hour game packed full of good design instead of a four hour game that causes me pain.

i wasn't expecting much when buying this game for 2.50 on sale. but i was deeply surprised... this is maybe the most scariest horror game i ever played. not because of the graphics but more storywise how deep the story goes. also the jumpscares where timed pretty damn good, every time i thought i was going to pants i didn't but then 1.5 minute later i still shit my pants. rated 11/10 would never play again xD

I play with inverted Y axis. To enable this in this game, i have to DISABLE invert y axis, and ENABLE invert X axis!?

Graphics are alright, gameplay and map design a bit basic.
Price is a bit much (get this on 80% or 90% discount if you must).

The puzzles sometimes don't make any sense, making you walk back and forward to trigger certain events.

Story is a bit predictable, and I was expecting the narrator to ask me for target/googleplay gift cards in order to save my soul at the end, as his voice/dialog reminds me of an indian scam call center operator..
and Grandma isn't really scary at all..
I rate this a: meh/10

The horror aspect is rather good, the game is creepy and unverving but this all get ruined by the atrocious pacing of the game. You will constantly get stuck between rooms and u will need to trigger certain things in the area in a certain order to progress (walking past something, reading something, zooming into something etc), a lot of the time it feels completely abstract and u will be bumbling around until you accidently trigger something or until the hint timer comes of cooldown and tells you what you were supposedly meant to do to progress. the fact that quite a lot of these triggers feel like they have quite a long delay doesn't help either as a lot of the time u dont know or realize if u have even triggered anything.

unfortunatly due to the bad pacing constantly thrawting any kind of progress and atmosphere in the game i will have to leave a not recommended for this game.

I hate this game! All you do is walk around and it's not scary. Why do the puzzles take forever to respond even though you've done everything right? Why does the flashlight take so long to turn with you? Whats up with the narrators voice? Why do I have to organize boxes? I could go on. This game is a terrible, frustrating pos. I recommend playing something else like hide and seek or tag by yourself. I swear I feel like punching a wall after playing this.

It's a walking simulator, and I've played many that I like and just a few that I don't.
Just in the first 30 or so minutes, this game makes already some (as I think) serious mistakes:

- seemingly random walking back and forth is required to progress (in this short time I got stuck 3 times already and used the in-game hints 3 times. that's not a demanding gameplay, it is badly written)
- puzzle solving requires trial and error (it seems?), which is bad [talking about the cubes puzzle in level 2]
- technical issues: the delay of your flashlight is so severe, it is hard to play with it. It is VERY off-putting.
- when I was told the same details of the story in-game the third time, I lost patience. So it is repetitive from the beginning, too.

Good concept, but execution needs more work, sorry.

Some minutes into the game and I notice that my character walks slower than a turtle. I'm not playing on a laptop, as a dev have issued the problem as unfixable if playing on a laptop. My pc is not the best but I'm running the game pretty good with everything on high, since it doesn't require much anyway. I have put all camera and graphs settings to low and my character still moves like a turtle, so that's not my problem. I'm glad I bought this on sale. I have watched the walkthrough, and I loved the game, it's sad i can't play it. I don't know if I can recommend it, since playing it myself could change my opinion about the walkthrough. BEWARE of this issue.

Edit n1: I decided to play the game in turtle mode. I reached the house part and after solving the paintings puzzle, my character couldn't go upstairs and was stuck. I restarted the game and had to start from the beginning of the house and do the puzzle all over again, which did not go well with my slow mode issue. I'm gonna finish the game or at least try and edit the review for a second and last time.

Edit n2: after replaying the puzzle part, my character got stuck again. I'm not gonna bother more with this game. Wish I had my money back.
