    Über das Spiel

Who needs backstory? Who needs resource-gathering? Diplomacy is so last year. Gratuitous Space Battles cuts right to the chase of sci-fi strategy games, and deals with large, completely unjustified space battles between huge opposing space fleets.
Gratuitous Space Battles combines the visual appeal of an RTS, with the addictive unit-placement and design gameplay from tower defense games. In GSB, the player does not control individual ships at all during battle. The ships fight to a pre-determined set of orders and formations given to them by you before the battles.
GSB casts you as supreme space admiral, tasked with the design of individual spaceships, and the composition of your fleet, as well as general orders of engagement. This is not a twitch-based real time arcade game like many an RTS, but a game of careful thought, planning and big-picture strategy. Huge space battles can be won or lost depending on just how cleverly you balanced the needs of defensive shielding and armor against the expensive punch of laser cannons and plasma torpedoes.
GSB also features an innovative multiplayer challenge system. You can upload your ultimate fleet to serve as the enemy to other players, and keep track of how many other players have won and lost against your challenge. That way, you will never run out of cunningly designed enemies to battle against!

It's a fun game - I owned it back in the day, and re-bought it on Steam recently.
It's good, but abandoned. That means that the online challenges don't work, and it also appears to mean that the entire campaign engine (that relies on players posting their fleets) is screwed.
Despite that the designing and tweaking of spaceships is really good. The pace of new content / equipment opening up is much better in this game than in GSB2 - you do feel you have to work for it, and there is enough change to feel like you've been rewarded.
Buy for a few fun hours? If it's 70% off like it was when I bought it, that kind of makes sense - just barely. If at full price, well... in my opinion avoid. I hate to write that.

I loved this game, the explosions, the sheer dakka yo could watch and even its broken campaign mode.

too bad that the game receive no support anymore and is unable to load a campaign battle anymore.

I wont recommend it for any future player as the game has become too broken to be playable at all

Just a heads up if you already own it and are considering the DLC - I played this for about 70 hours, originally playing the basic version. Then I bought the DLC and extras, and the extra content only breathed about 10 extra hours into it. There's a few interesting additions, but overall if you're just playing it casually as a 5 minute game while you do something else, it's probably not worth the expansions.

As suggested in the previous paragraph, GSP is the sort of game you can pick up and put down easily. You can even go AFK during the battle if you need to, which makes it the perfect game for a PC player who wants the semi-casual elements that mobile games have, but has too high standards to play those.

The campaign map from the DLC is pretty bland and the battles are timed and repeat themselves. You can end up in a constant stalemate because the challenge tends to be scaled to the size of your entire fleet, so keeping them all together seems to be the only way to keep ships alive, meaning you may end up just defending two systems at either end of your empire and moving your fleet back and forth between them. It's probably the least playable part of the game.

I gave myself eyestrain the first weekend I played this game. I had to take a two day break from screens to stop my eyes from twitching. It is a game for alpha nerds. You will spend hours tweaking your designs, with very little action. I found it very enjoyable.

No strategy, no tactics, you just design the ships and fleet - then the computer fights the whole battle for you.

    Why? What is the point?

Build a fleet of ships on each side and then watch them fight. Then do it again. Takes a while to actually customize ships and battles typically end quickly. Probably looking at 3-5 minutes of actually watching fights for each hour of setting up a fight.

I have a story, one time my friend came over to my house - he saw this game in my library and demanded to play it. I wasn't keen on letting him play, but I did anyway. After showing him how to assemble a fleet he just had to play.

He lost every single battle. 10/10

Not too hard of a game.

Greta game! It is for those who like building your own units and then sending them off to fight. Strategic but also a bit puzzlely, I have found endless hours of enjoyment experimenting and trying to find the optimal fleet deployment and builds. Not so direct interaction between players but you can post your deployments for others to challenge. Over all great game and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes strategy and space battles. If you are wondering which one to pick from the franchise, GSB1 is much better than GSB2 due to the lack of factions in GSB2.

Well. Probably the easiest RTS game I have played and the easiest one to modify. Seriously, I unlocked everything within an hour of installation because everything is in a .txt file. This means I can also screw with the stats. I have a fond memory of the one time I made engines really efficient and all my strike craft went like ''I am speed.'' Does this make the game less fun? No, as a matter of fact grinding the missions to get 'honour' to get components is a pain in the arse. The fun in this game is sending hundreds of ships against hundreds of enemy vessels and realizing how many goddamned ships are in your list of ships and thinking why do I have three of the same kind of ship blueprint.
Solid 5/5 review, easy to modify, and a great soundtrack.

Seems to be broken, game keys are suddenly being made invalid when trying to boot the campaign.

*04 Feb 2020 I read that the dev is aware of the issue, something about complications during a server transition*

If they fix the problem, it's worth a play. Simple but engaging top down strategy, plenty of ship types and upgrades. It's fun. When it works... I'll recommend it if/when I find out it does.

It's fixed. Loaded it up to check, and found it's still as oddly addictive as it always was.

    Quick review:

Like I've said for a lot of space games, the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach doesn't result in a ton of depth here, at least not accessibly. I find that the tons of ship customization options don't matter because each battle is really decided by efficiency. It just takes too bloody long to figure out what's working and what isn't, what with the extremely slow 4X (times, not as in Civ) speed and the slow engines. It's also a little bit ugly since the textures are quite blurry, you can't zoom out properly, etc.

Since I discovered how to mod the game and since they brought Manual Orders to it its really fun.

Choose a race, create ships, deploy a fleet, give it orders, then let them go into battle and watch the outcome.

Works also well with a touch screen.

A really fine game and the parasites DLC is worth it.

The game could explain better what each races are good for and where their strongpoints are.

Sad to hear that the developer experienced some drama with his community. Its not important that you socialice on the internet, whats important is that you enjoy making good games. This is a good game. Avoid the second game thats sadly broken and unfinished.

The number of hours I've logged in this game should give you an idea of how replayable this is IF you like this kind of game, which I obviously do :3

How I would describe the game:

-a couple or handful of hours of campaign, which really equates to; getting you used to the game mechanics
-then you have custom campaigns, this is where all of my time has gone; the numerous combinations of ships to create your fleets are absolutely fantastic, there are tons of commands to program into the ships, tons of balancing to do while creating your ships, revisions, reasons for 'special mission' ships, and best of all you are going up against fleets created by other users

Quite obviously, I recommend this, but only for the people who love strategy (and the weapons/shields/ships have a very star trekky feel, which may influence some in one way or another.)

GSB is okay as a game. However, it is not a complete game in itself. The campaign is quite small and it does not go far enough with its technological 'skill tree' progression.

The gameplay is purely strategic and very hands-off. You build a fleet of ships, with the resources available, and you send them on their way. You have minimal control over how battles pan out, and there is no gameplay beyond the battles. Additionally, the interface is somewhat slow and unnecessary time consuming to navigate.

The most disappointing aspect of GSB is its blatant premium content model. After you have purchased the game, you will be required to purchase a number of nominally priced DLC packs to get the full game content. By buying this game, you are essentially only buying part of a game.

I give Gratuitous Space Battles 3/10 flaming spaceship hulls.

Oh god I love this game.

This game's style is build and run. You design ships, pretty detailed in that. You go into battle against a fleet of enemy ships. You place your ships in a layout. You program orders. You click start. You wait.

If you wipe out the enemies you win.

Great game mechanics there, and a pretty extensive customization range. Didn't knew this would've been this fun.

Great visuals too for a 2D game.

Lots of strategies involved, and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

If what I told you is something that tickles your pickles you might want to take a look at this game.
