Arcade Rally Racing on a Budget
System & Setup: Windows 10 64bit Intel Core i9 10900K NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER LG 27inch 1440p 144hz monitor 27GN850-B The game has an implentation of HDR that activates when it detects a monitor that is capable of it. It sucks. (Or maybe my monitor isn’t good with HDR?) It causes too much of the screen to be fogged up during races and isn’t a great way to play. Luckily, other people have figured out a way to turn HDR off. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2005389031 Type Run into the Windows Search Bar. Type %LocalAppdata% into the text space. Gravel/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor. Click in Engine.ini Place this block of text within it: [SystemSettings] r.HDR.EnableHDROutput=0 r.HDR.UI.CompositeMode=0 r.HDR.Display.OutputDevice=0 r.HDR.Display.ColorGamut=0 Save it. Boom, problem solved. Also, I had some minor troubles with activating the DLC in the game, but if memory serves I was able to resolve it by just going into the game menu, choosing Downloadable Content and installing the DLCs one by one. It was nothing more than a few minutes of inconvenience at most. It surely wasn't enough for me to write a detailed note of it down, but I felt I should mention it anyway. The game easily stablizes at 120fps with settings maxxed and resolution set to 1440p. Review: First thing's first. Sim racers: Keep it moving. The game that you're looking for isn't here. Gravel knows who their audience is and it's the sort of gamer that plays video games to take a break from reality rather than recreate it. Gravel is absolutely an arcade rally game that pays more mind to being entertaining than being realistic. People with fond memories of Sega Rally, Excitetruck or Motorstorm should feel welcomed here. People who give this game a download will find a good amount of cars to choose from, a good variety of track layouts and a championship mode that should last about 6 to 7 hours if you set yourself on doing only the bare minimum to make the credits roll. If you go for winning all of the medals on all of the courses and unlocking all of the car liveries, you'll probably be looking at a runtime of about 12 to 15 hours. The cars handle like you would expect them to handle in a game like this, fast and loose with a lot of drifts in the sharper corners. Of note is that instead of just having the option of automatic or manual transmission, the game by default sets the cars to a semi-automatic transmission, giving the player the best of both and giving them more options on how to navigate the harder turns than just relying on the brakes. Most racing game stories, if they happen to bother having one, tend to be focused on motivating the player to defeat one racer. Usually, it's because they're a massive jerk and need to be brought down a peg. Gravel overperforms in this aspect, instead choosing to give the player five(!) different people that they have to beat on their way to the top. They don't really do anything to let you know if you should hate them, but there's a clip of one of them playing air guitar, and that's as good a reason as any! In its best moments, the graphics of the game can look quite good. Unfortunately, just as often as the game delivers some nice eye candy, it falls short of its generation and and comes off looking a bit undercooked. You can feel the game straining against its own budget at times, and although it tries as best as it could, you won't be seeing many people fawning over carefully captured photos of this game like you would other racing titles. Actually, it reminds me a bit of how Dirt 5 looked at launch, before it was visually improved with a game update. The music in the game is present and not much else. Comprised of generic rock songs and guitar riffs, it succeeds at setting a mood for the game but fails at being memorable at all. I suppose every game can't afford to bring on masterful composers or pay for licensed music, and Gravel certainly didn't do either. I wasn't going to bother commenting on music at all, except I had to poke fun at one track in particular. Whenever I hear it, it just sounds like the game's designers desperately wanted Cowboys From Hell in the game's soundtrack, but couldn't afford to pay the licensing so they told somebody to put together something as close to it as possible without being legally actionable. Whatever, it gets the job done I suppose. While the game's physics system mostly holds together and lets you launch off ramps or cliffs to get big jumps when you're supposed to, sometimes it will feel like the game has it out for you, and your car will randomly get knocked over or launched into the air for no discernible reason. I'm guessing this is the main reason why the game has a rewind feature; to fix the mistakes you never actually made. This will probably sound like a really odd thing to harp on for some people, but I just have to say that this game has some of the blandest car decals I have ever seen in a video game. I mean, I know it's a matter of subjective opinion here but it's just incredible how many designs I see in this game that I know I would never want to put on my car. Maybe if you had some ability to customize their colors I'd feel better about them, but no dice. They're repulsive and I've never wished so hard for the sort of user created decal designs that you'd get from Forza Horizon 4, or even the Crew 2. I know people harp on the shortcomings of Dirt 5's decals and customization options but I'd take those in a heartbeat over the ones in Gravel. If you're going to play a game about racing cars, then you want the car you race in to be nice to look at, and this game just misses the mark on that way too often. It's not all a wash, there are a few classic decals here like for the Toyota T100 Baja Truck and the Toyota Supra. You'll be best off sticking to those. Also, only buy this game if you plan on playing single player. The online mode is a ghost town, and short of roping a friend into playing with you or perhaps camping out in the lobby all day, you're not going to see any multiplayer action. Achievement hunters be warned, as you'll need to complete ten online races to get the two trophies tied to online multiplayer. I know it's starting to sound like I should really be giving this game a thumbs down, but for all the faults I can find in this game, the important thing is that when you get behind the wheel and blast your way through the track, kicking up dirt as you soar into first place, the game is a very good time. No, the graphics aren't as good and the music is forgettable and the decals are bad, but the core of the game does what it needs to do, despite the game coming up short on the window dressing. The game is a fine purchase if you balk at the higher price of Dirt 5 and would rather spend thirteen dollars during a sale instead. There's nothing particularly bad about it and you'll likely have a good time if arcade rally racing is your thing. Just, don't be surpised if you have a hard time remembering much about Gravel a few months after you've put it down. Recommended.

impression
such a great underrated racing game, has pretty much good graphics on today's standard, although this game was released in 2018 you should compare the graphics with dirt 3 or wrx fia 5 and this game beats em. (quick tip; u can even tweak the game's engine .ini file to make it even more beautiful) the phisics is decent for a game made with unreal engine not necessarily great, a little bit bouncy/jelly like tho u can tune the indifidual car's settings, the AI is kinda good, rubberbanding as expected, game's progression is linear based of the season and levels that we gain as we progress the race and do certain things (e.g drifting) other stuff worth pointing out; - features ; the game has common features like achievements & controller support, trading cards and inventory items (if u into that), weekly event and multiplayer (yes the game has mp, pretty nice for a less well-known game like gravel) - cars ; the game has 48 cars in total not that much but its good, what's awesome is that the game has cars that other racing games like dirt, wrc and forza never have (e.g toyota 222d, mitsubishi outlander sport asx, & pajero, vauxhall astra 4s, toyota land cruiser and hilux (not arctic truck) sick gt86 r3, nissan navara, heck it even have suzuki gran vitara! how cool is that) (the game also have 4 subarus kudos for that) - things i dont really like ; dlcs , yes the game has plenty of downloadable contents to buy meaning the base game doesnt really have enough content to enjoy in fact, u can only access 30% of the game's content from the base game, not to mention the car packs too!, the races is kinda short with 50 seconds to 2 minutes duration on average, whats wierder is that the tracks are identical so u feel like repeating the same race. but it has wide variety of race modes like elimination, time attack so that would help, the game doesnt have a proper rally game (with pace notes and codriver like dirt or wrc had) is it actually just a offroad racing game (kind of a bummer), no customizations u can only choose certain liveries of the car with you can get by progressing the game (not a big deal imo), the game is also a little bit more expensive so i recommend buying the game while its on salefinal verdict
my opinion about Gravel, should you, •avoid it •consider it •shortlist it •buy it ? well if youre a diehard focused sim rally fans then i reckon you should consider it, because the game doesnt have rally and its more of a casual arcade than an actual sim so yeet your $1000 thrustmasters fanatech g27 setup the heck out lol, i find using keyboard or a xbox controller is more enjoyable.. BUT, if u want a good non-mainstream arcade offroad racing timekiller then you should go ahead and buy it :)
